Mike Pence Would Consider Testifying in Front of Jan. 6 Committee
"So. This is somewhat unbelievable, but I'm going to help us work our way through this. Mike Pence is going to challenge Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for the presidency. No, it's not written in stone just yet, but that's the only reason to be a New Hampshire right now. And Mike Pence does not own a vacation home in New Hampshire. He doesn't have relatives in New Hampshire, but he's a New Hampshire, and he is laying the groundwork folks for a run at The White House. And he's not the only one. But this could get very interesting because on the debate stage, you could end up having Donald Trump Mike Pence and Liz Cheney. Now the question is, who does Donald Trump pick up on the stage and smack around the other person? Is it Liz Cheney? Does he pick her up and physically just smack the living daylights out of Mike Pence or is it vice versa? But they're all going to be running for The White House. So look, Mike Pence had a couple of things to say. First of all, he was talking about whether or not he would testify or consider testifying at the January 6th committee. Jeremy said, if they were to call you the committee. Come and testify. Would you be agreeable? Why would if there was an invitation to participate, I would consider it, but you've heard me mention the constitution a few times this morning. On the constitution, we have three co equal branches of government. And any invitation to be directed to me, I would have to reflect on the unique role that I was serving as vice president.

Tim Michaels Wins Wisconsin Republican Nomination for Governor
"Got renominated last night. You got renominated last night. Any upsets anything interesting happened in Wisconsin elections last night? Well, I mean, the governor primary was coming down to the wire. It was close to Michael's prevailed over Rebecca, clayfish, Rebecca, clay fish, was the former lieutenant governor, endorsed by former governor Scott walker, Tim Michaels is a businessman who was endorsed by former president Trump. And so that was a very hard fought primary to Michael's prevailed and so now we have the task of uniting the party behind Tim Michael's in order to oust governor Evers, who has been a terrible governor and he was vetoed any number of common sense conservative legislation. So that was really the race everybody was watching. You know, there were a lieutenant governor's race where a state senator from my district, who I know well prevailed, but other than that, it was mostly the governor's primary that people were focused on.
Big Wins Across State Primaries This Week
"Had Kansas and Missouri Arkansas having battles, Missouri. We saw Eric Schmidt, the attorney general over there when the nomination in the battle of Eric's Donald Trump chiming in with an endorsement of Eric with two candidates having the same first name, Eric Schmidt ended up getting the win and will face off to try and make sure the Missouri Senate race stays in Republican hands and then down in Arizona. Carrie Lake finally gets the final nod that she's the winner in Arizona. Maricopa County, Phoenix that screwed up the 2020 election has done no progress in getting any further along at being able to actually count votes and get through an election process. You know, you've got other countries where they can literally hand count ballots and they can do it in 24 hours. Maricopa County can't even get it done in a few days and they had chaos, they had confusion, like we saw in 2020, despite all the denials that there was any election problems in Arizona that it didn't get stolen from Trump, but a big week there, and then in Tennessee, where we're broadcasting from in Memphis, Andy ogles wins the Republican primary in the Tennessee 5th congressional district. Last night, as Republicans redrew that district in Tennessee, it's been a 9 congressional district state for a while. Traditionally, you've had 7 Republicans to Democrats in recent years. Well, with redistricting, Republicans redrew the lines in Nashville, dividing Nashville up, adding some of the suburban counties to it. And for the first time for the first time since reconstruction, the Civil War, Republicans have an actual shot to pick up Nashville and probably do that new district is about a 12 plus Republican district Donald Trump carried it by over a dozen points,
Trump ally Kari Lake wins GOP primary for Arizona governor
"Trump endorsed candidate Terry Lake has won the Republican primary for Arizona governor A former TV news anchor who centered false claims of election fraud in her campaign Carrie Lake secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Arizona That puts her up against Democrat Katie Hobbs Arizona Secretary of State in November Lake appeared to be trailing on election night when she thanked her supporters And I want to thank president Donald J Trump He's the one that got this whole thing going But she pulled into the lead against primary opponent Karen Taylor Robson after Maricopa County released the results from thousands of ballots that had been dropped off at the polls After the race was called Lake issued a statement saying arizonans who have been forgotten by the establishment just delivered a political earthquake On her social media Lake says she's thrilled to be speaking right before Trump at the conservative political action conference in Dallas on Saturday Audio courtesy canon XV I'm Jennifer King
Trump's Endorsement Continues to Sway Voters in State Primaries
"Notably, I mean, there were a few big ones. Here's the weird part, and this is not necessarily bad news yet. In the Republican primary for governor of Arizona, Carrie Lake has a tiny lead over Karen Taylor robeson, 79% of the vote counted at last count and as a friend of mine wondered, how could they still not know the outcome of that election? How long could it take to count the votes in Arizona? We ever going to get this right. Are we ever going to count votes in a reasonable amount of time? There certainly should be an outcome by now. Tudor Dixon won in the Michigan Republican nomination for governor. Prompting a showdown with Gretchen Whitmer, that's going to be fun to watch. So, you know, axios acknowledges the power of the Trump endorsement continues suggesting that Donald Trump still has a lot of sway and influence with the voters.
Dinesh Unpacks the Arizona Primary Election Results
"Now back to Arizona, where the Trump back candidate, this is Blake masters. Easily won, and so he now becomes the GOP candidate to face the incumbent democratic senator Mark Kelly. Very interestingly, Mark fincham, a big, a big proponent of 2000 mules, and somebody who is focused on the issue of election fraud. This is why the left calls them an election denier. Election denier. These days of you exposed fraudulent election denier. I think it's just a strategy somewhat similar to the mafia. I remember when you go after the mafia, I'd be like, this is prejudice against Italian Americans. You're implying that every Italian American is a crook and a criminal. No, we're not implying that. We're just going after the crooks and the criminals in the same year. This election denialism is supposed to be some kind of an epithet that's supposed to scare people. Well, to the degree that it means going after election fraud and protecting free elections, there's nothing wrong with being an election denialist. We're really fraud denialists if you want to put it that way. Anyway, Mark fincham wins the Republican Secretary of State nomination. And now we turn to the governor's race and here's Meghan McCain. This is an early on yesterday. She goes, wow. Lake is getting crushed so far. Incredible. Everybody, everybody, better turn to prime time. If this lunatic loses, she's gonna go absolute insane on live TV, like one for the books, make Trump look normal insane. So you can see, you know, Meghan McCain is starting to glow. She's like, we got the McCain family. We put all this money in, you know, the candidate running against Lake is married to a multi millionaire if not a billionaire, so the outspend carry Lake. Incomes, Mike Pence. So a lot of it was at stake here because in some ways the Republican establishment is also, I don't know if grooming is the right word, but there's sort of grooming Pence. And in order to groom pants, you gotta show that the Pence endorsement can carry a rival to carry Lake all the way to the nomination. And so not only that, but the former governor Doug ducey also strong endorsement of Karen Taylor Robson and it was looking sort of tricky for Carrie Lake for a while they carry like was behind most of the day yesterday, I guess partly because they had counted the mail in ballots first, but then when the day votes came in from yesterday itself, Carrie Lake surpasses Karen Taylor Robson. I don't think she's been officially declared the winner, but to me, this is important on two counts first. It's because it shows the maga takeover of the GOP. Carrie Lake represents the maga wing of the party, not to say the Republican establishment has no strength. They were able to make this much closer than many people thought. But second, Kerry Lake is focused on the election integrity issue. She's been all over 2000 mules. In fact, one of the most vocal and eloquent defenders of 2000 mules, even in hostile TV environments. And so it's fantastic to see her get across the finish line. I think she'll be a formidable candidate going into November.
The Diabolical Ingenuity of Stacey Abrams
"I want to talk about the ingenuity, the kind of diabolical ingenuity of Stacey Abrams. Now, you know who Stacey Abrams is. She is the woman who has who lost the last Georgia gubernatorial election to Brian Kemp. She lost by 50,000 votes, but she said she didn't lose. In fact, she refused to concede, even when she did concede, it was kind of a non concession speech. So she appears to think that she is the governor. And now that Brian Kemp has won the Republican nomination in 2022, you have a rematch between Brian Kemp and Stacey Abrams, Paul so far seemed to have Brian Kemp pretty comfortably ahead. But I want to talk really about how Stacey Abrams deals with these kinds of situations, and she deals with them really by trying to rewrite the rules of the game. Now, Stacey Abrams is one of those characters who makes a brief appearance, although her role is not all that brief. In 2000 mules. If I remember she was mentioned, what was the honey? Just once, right? I think in the movie, where the police officer, who has been hired by the Senate Republican committee to watch that he mentions her and he talks about the Stacey Abrams people who are right there and the throes of the voting. Well, there's some interesting reporting. It's come from multiple sources, so there's no reason to doubt it. It's in Fox business, it's some CBS News. It's an NPR. And Stacey Abrams has a new scheme. Which goes beyond mules. And arguably, you need new schemes, the mules don't work if you don't have drop boxes anymore, or if the Zuckerberg money is now torpedoed or if people are watching the Dropbox as you gotta be creative. And Stacey Abrams is nothing if not creative. And look, I don't want to, I don't want to exaggerate the creativity because when you have the media on your side, you can do these schemes and you never get called to account for them.

Lia Thomas's Nomination Proves Women Are Erasing Themselves
"The other idiot I wanted to bring up today is William Thomas. The transgender swimmer. Because now she's been nominated for woman of the year. Woman of the year guys, what the hell is wrong with the NCAA? This guy ranked nearly dead last when he swam against young men, pops a few hormone pills and presto change O maybe tucks his print to the right tapes it down. Now he's a woman. And then he jumps like 465 places to become the number one female swimmer, how can anybody accept this insanity? You know, girls in the quest to be seen as equals. Women seem to believe that in order to be seen as such, they must also surrender their femininity. But in doing so, they not only achieve that, but they've helped all but erase themselves. It's meaningless. They've turned everything into nothing. But this is Biden and the Democrats world,

Political Strategist Dick Morris Joins Dinesh to Discuss Trump 2024
"Hey guys, I'm really happy to welcome to the podcast, dick Morris, dick Morris is the legendary political strategist, he brought us Bill Clinton. I'm not sure if he's happy about that, but he's been an adviser to Republicans and Democrats, heads of state of around the globe. He's also a friend of Donald Trump was involved in both the 2016 and the 2020 presidential runs and his newest book is called the return. Trump's big 2024 come back. Dick, thanks for joining me. It's really great to have you. And I'm excited to sort of see where all of this goes. So can you, can you play it out for us? I mean, Trump is basically I think said of late. I've made a decision. I'll be telling you what it is soon. It seems to me that there's no way this guy decides not to run, right? He's running international. We've been talking for ever since election day about it. And we've been strategizing for 24. And I think he's definitely running. I think that he will probably not have a primary. I think that his lead will be so significant that desantis and the others will decide not to run. I think it wouldn't the nomination perhaps by acclamation. He might have a minor primary like rob New York Cheney. But the main purpose of this book, which I wrote with his in effect authorization, was to explain to people how he'll win what he'll do in 24 that's different from what he did in 20.
Which Republicans Are Gearing up for a Potential Presidential Run?
"Us. So there's some interesting rumblings. I got a couple of emails over the weekend from some folks up in D.C. down in Florida. And they've been, they've been paying attention to some of the maneuvering of folks like Mike Pence, governor Christie nome, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, even senator Tim Scott over in South Carolina. Not so much Scott as the others that I just mentioned. But there are Republicans that are starting to maneuver themselves. For what could be presidential runs. Now, the general thought and the working theory within the Republican Party is that Trump is going to run. And that if Trump decides to run that the nomination is Trump's if he wants it. In other words, everybody else in the party would stand down if in fact he decides to jump into the race. Now you could say that's a good thing that's a bad thing and I can see the pros and the cons of both, but do we really want a long drawn out Republican primary where you've got all of these up and coming Republican superstars taking cheap shots at Donald Trump. There are also rumblings that establishment Republicans are gearing up and that someone like a Liz Cheney could enter the race. A Liz Cheney who, by the way, is trailing her opponent in her congressional race in Wyoming by what 20 points. But they're saying she might jump into the race and it might be that Mike Pence is going to be the establishment guy. Pompeo has been mentioned as a choice, but I don't think he's ready to jump in yet. And I think a lot of these folks are going to wait and see what Trump does, but people are already starting to make moves.
Mark Levin Endorses Mark Brnovich for Senate
"Mark Bernabeu the attorney general virus on has become a friend We've never met in person We've talked on the phone we've talked on the radio But we've hit it off And the reason is he's not only a very decent guy in honorable guy He really is into this thing we call public service And he's been most of his life And I think he would be an absolutely fantastic senator He's running in the Republican primary for the nomination to be a senator and why did I endorse him Because the guys are fighter Because he's not a one issue guy He's a conservative across the board And he's done more than most As attorney general of one state to fight the Biden administration the fight what's going on in the criminal justice system to fight what's going on On the border the lawlessness that's taking place in other words he's action oriented He's not He's not all talk He's not just talking about what he's going to do And he's been a leader and there's been great attorneys general throughout the country but he's been a leader Among them and I think that he could actually get elected to the United States Senate beat this guy Mark Kelly who's a

Emmy surprises: 'Squid Game,' Dave Chappelle, 'This Is Us'

"But I do also appreciate the fact that this was kind of a wholly original different sprung from obviously from current events, but not directly based on something true, whereas these other shows, not so much, although I did really, really like the dropout. And I enjoyed Pam and Tommy to a point. Yeah, I thought the dropout was excellent. I think I've actually watched the drop out all the way through twice. But that's partly because I'm like an Elizabeth Holmes obsessive. But I did think that was excellent. I think the white lotus is like as a holistic thing kind of has problems, but is full of great performances and great scenes if I can say it that way. Dope sick I thought was a little heavy handed at times, but again, full of performances that I respected. So I have no quarrel with that. Inventing Anna, I kind of thought was I watched it and forgot it, but same. So for the lead actress in the limited or anthology series or movie, we've got Toni Collette for the staircase. Julia Garner for inventing Anna, Lily James for Pam and Tommy, Sarah Paulson for impeachment, American crime story, Margaret qualley, for made and Amanda Seyfried for the dropout. This is a pretty interesting lineup and pretty strong lineup, I think. And full of stars. Yes, very starring. We're sort of going back to that thing where like, well, sure, Toni Collette, who's a big movie star, and Amanda Seyfried, who's a big movie star. You know, you have some of these performances that I like more than others. I do not like that Sarah Paulson performance in American crime story. I just think it was silly. But I love the Margaret qualley performance in maid and there's a little bit of recognition for maid kicking around that's still on Netflix. I really recommend it if you haven't watched it. I am delighted that just a little bit of recognition for what was one of the shows that really kind of blew me away this year. So lots of good stuff in that category. Yeah. And in the lead actor category, we've got Colin Firth for the staircase, Andrew Garfield for under the banner of heaven, Oscar Isaac for scenes from a marriage. Michael Keaton for dope sick, himesh Patel, for station 11, and Sebastian Stan for Pam and Tommy. I think it's worth mentioning that station 11 was a hugely admired show critically by a lot of our colleagues. And I think the places where it was recognized like this category for himesh Patel, who's kind of the only non big movie star person in this category when you're like, oh, Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, and so forth and so forth. Yeah. So for outstanding supporting actor, we've got from the white lotus. So again, this category is another we got a bunch of the same shows going on here. So from the white lotus, we have Murray Bartlett, Jake lacy, and Steve zahn, and from dope sick, we have will poulter, Peter Sarsgaard, and Michael stuhlbarg. Also, Seth Rogen for Pam and Tommy. That Seth Rogen performance is a really interesting one to me. I kind of liked it myself. He was kind of playing against type. He's basically the villain, but a villain who kind of thinks he's the hero or at least not a villain. And that? Yeah. And to clarify, he's playing the guy who basically stole the sex tapes of Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee. And our responsible for the world seeing it basically. Those white lotus nominations, Murray Bartlett, is wonderful on that show. And I also think Jake lacy, who had been kind of playing a lot of nice guys, came into this and plays

"This award I think in the eyes of practically everybody who's ever seen that show for a long time, yeah? Absolutely. I mean, as Kim Wexler Saul's wife and co-conspirator in all things nefarious or not all things, but a lot of really bad things on that show. She walks that line between wanting to do good but also being immoral in many ways that I think I haven't seen a woman necessarily play on TV in that way. And so the way her character has developed over these past 6 seasons has just been so fantastic to watch. And yeah, this is the moment. It's like she was the Susan Lucci except she didn't even get navigated so now she's finally got exactly nomination she should have gotten before. Exactly. And I would also throw in still love Sarah snook on Succession and super love Jay Smith Cameron a journey woman actor for a gazillion years and just such a cool presence on that show. And again, what a great role for somebody to get and get recognition for just delightful. Yeah. So for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series, we have from Succession Nicholas Braun, here in Culkin and Matthew mcfadyen from severance, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken for Squid Game. We have pake su and oh Yong su and there's Billy Crudup from the morning show. I had to admit I have not seen most of these performances, including Squid Game, and I stopped watching the morning show. But I'm excited for the succession, guys. Look, succession guys, all good. But I do want to say, John Turturro and Christopher Walken are both actors who have been around a long time who are doing such lovely nuanced work. I think legitimately severance found a way to deploy both of those actors in a totally new way. As terms of Billy Crudup, I really did think Billy Crudup was the good thing about the first season of the morning show. I think even that, I think they kind of messed that character up this season too. I'm sorry. I didn't love this season of the morning films, sorry. And I think the actors on Squid Game, regardless of the fact that I can find it a difficult sit just in terms of the violence and the bleakness of it when I feel bleak about other things already. I think the performances are all extraordinarily impressive. So kudos to those guys too. Yeah, I mean, it's good game is not for everyone, but it is nice to see that it was able to break through in these categories. Absolutely. And it's one of those things where like, it's great for that show, and this breakthrough will be great, I think, for other shows. And it's overdue in about time. Absolutely. We move on to the limited anthology or movie category for the outstanding limited or anthology series category. We've got dope sick, the dropout, inventing Anna, Pam and Tommy, and the white lotus. What I find interesting about this category is that I'm feeling this sort of Oscar Y creep where pretty much all of these are based on true stories except for the white lotus. And that's interesting to me. We are kind of in this era where we are just kind of reenacting history a lot a lot a lot. And I had my issues with the white lotus and the way some of the things played out.

"So let's dive back in with the drama categories. So for outstanding drama series this year, we have Better Call Saul. Euphoria, Ozark, severance, Stranger Things Succession, yellowjackets, Squid Game, a lot of one and two word titles here. I'm just noticing. And Squid Game notably is the first ever non English drama series to be nominated, which is a pretty big deal. It really is. And I think, you know, neither you nor as a big Squid Game devotee. We were talking about, I'm kind of making my way through it as best I can. When I'm sort of up to its dramatic challenges in terms of what a tough sit it is. But there's, again, a lot of really good stuff in this category. I was super excited about yellowjackets, which I think was a very interesting imperfect but really cool and weird in a good way kind of thing. I don't know if I would still be nominating Stranger Things at this point. I definitely wouldn't nominate Ozark. I continue to think succession is an extraordinary show. I know it's so done to talk about, but it's like, I'm sorry. I even as somebody who is not inclined toward get a load of these rich jerks kind of shows, I continue to be absolutely spellbound by that show. So again, great, great stuff in here. You're right. What more can be said about Succession. But yellow jackets, it's one of those shows that I was not expecting to get as into as I did because I was never really a lost person, obviously there's a lot of similarities there. I'm also not a big fantasy sci-fi person, but that show really hooked me. And I'm really excited to see it here. And I'm always going to be happy when Better Call Saul is absolutely talked about. It's kind of a sleeper show in a way, but I definitely think for its fans, it's great to see it here. So this is a good bunch. Yeah, and we should also mention, I think, a lot of critics would have wanted to see pachinko here on Apple TV, maybe in place of something like Stranger Things. But it is a packed category, but pachinko, I will say, is a cinematic and really beautiful show. I have no quarrel with anybody who wanted to see it here. Definitely worth seeking out and probably one of the few things I would legitimately say is like a snub, you know? Absolutely. So moving on to the outstanding lead actress in a drama series category, we have Jodie comer for Killing Eve, Laura Linney for Ozark. Melanie linsky for yellow jackets, Sandra Oh, for Killing Eve, Reese Witherspoon for the morning show. And Zendaya for euphoria. This is an interesting category. You know, a number of these do feel a bit like what I would call like a legacy nomination, like a sort of either because the actress is very well established or the actress in the show is very well established. These nominations feel some of them a little bit like they probably would have happened regardless of what the show was actually doing. But I will say, I'm always so happy for Zendaya who's growth into the level of recognition that she has now is super awesome.

"The Emmy nominations have arrived and Succession leads the pack in most nominations followed closely by Ted Lasso and the white lotus. This was also a good year for the folks behind only murders in the building hacks and Squid Game, which each picked up their fair share of recognition from voters. We're going to get into the snubs surprises and everything in between. I'm Linda Holmes. And I'm Aisha Harris, and today we're recapping this year's Emmy nominations on pop culture happy hour from NPR. So let's just get right on to it, starting with the comedy. So for outstanding comedy series this year, we have nominations for Abbott elementary, Barry, curb your enthusiasm, hacks, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, only murders in the building, Ted Lasso, and What We Do in the Shadows. That is a lot of shows. Linda, what are your thoughts on this group of comedies? Well, the thing that stands out for me the most is that no broadcast networks have really been hanging on by a thread in terms of Emmy presents for the last few years. I'm sure that not only is the entire abbot elementary team delighted about this nomination and the other ones at the show received. But I think broadcast television in general is always rooting for itself to maintain a presence. I think it's really cool to see a show like this that has gotten a lot of credit for elements of representation and other things and it's kind of singular sense of humor. This is a fun nomination or set of nominations for this show because, you know, critics love it too. Critics love it too. Yeah, absolutely. I was personally very, very happy to see Abbott elementary there. And Barry as well, even though I sometimes wonder, is it really a comedy? Is it really a comedy? We'll get into this, but you know, if severance is a drama and Barry is a comedy, it's complicated out there. Yes, it is, it is. So for lead actress in a comedy series, we have Rachel brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Kaley Cuoco, for the flight attendant, Al fanning for the great Issa Rae for insecure, she in smart for hacks and Quinta Brunson for Abbott elementary. And I think it's definitely worth noting here that Brunson has become the first black woman to pick up three Emmy comedy nods in the same year. She was also nominated for writing and producing Abbott elementary, which I am very happy to see. I think a lot of us are just rooting for her and it's great to see this show gets so much love. Yeah. I mean, I think rooting for her rooting for broadcast to have some successes and to find those successes in good shows. So delighted about that, I really love Kaley Cuoco in the flight attendant. I'm happy about that. There's a lot here to be happy about. A lot of big players in this category gene smart and certainly Rachel Brosnan, who's been nominated forever for misses maisel, but yeah, it's wonderful to see that Quinta Brunson nod. Yeah. Now for lead actor and a comedy series, we have Donald Glover for Atlanta, Bill Hader for Barry, Nicholas Hoult for the great Jason Sudeikis for Ted Lasso and from only murders in the building. We have both Steve Martin and Martin Short. This is another show only murders that I was very excited to see get nominated.

What Inflation Will Mean for the Democrats in 2024
"To turn to the political implications of all this because inflation comes at a cost, not just for the American people, but actually for the political system itself. And I suspect, you know, given that he's sort of in the wrong place at the wrong time, Joe Biden is going to feel the consequence of all this, as well as everybody in his entire cabinet. I mean, I don't know how any of them, frankly, have much of a political future. Certainly not in the here and now. Because of the challenges in our economy. Kamala Harris has often been touted as somebody who may take over the Democrat party. I think those days have kind of come and gone for her. She's got her own set of challenges, including how she speaks to the media. You've seen all those clips, so I won't get into that with you, but you know what I'm talking about. Pete Buttigieg, he's got his own issues because heck he's head of transportation and gas prices are through the roof. Jennifer Granholm head of energy. You get gas prices. Again, through the roof, which people are really upset about. And so I think the Democrat party is increasingly looking at alternatives. You heard me say on the show earlier in the week, I would not be surprised to see Joe Biden get primaried. In fact, maybe they need to do that. If they want to have any shot at 2024, I think the guy that campaigning for the job right now within the party is probably Gavin Newsom. So watch him carefully, I think it's going to be amusing in some ways if he were to get the nomination from Joe Biden. Certainly horrible for Biden, but probably horrible for the Democrats again here because he's so far left out there in California and California has been such a mess and that's, you know, being kind, keep it clean here. For the kids, but California has been really and truly a mess. And there's no way that those policies that have been popular in California would ever work on a national scale. And I think that's what he would run into in terms of challenges down the road. I don't

"Netflix nabbed 27 Oscar nominations on Tuesday, the most of any studio, including a best picture nod for psychological drama, the power of the dog. The nomination seemed to be the latest returns on the streaming giants investments into original content. Julia Alexander is a senior strategy analyst for a parrot analytics. She says nominations for companies like Netflix and Amazon signal growing acceptance for streaming content by the academy and by audiences in general. And that's changing the types of movies that grab nominations as well. I think when we think about the type of movies that the academy really wants to celebrate, these dramas that are about grief and about hope and about kind of humanity coming together at a time when we really need it. Those movies don't necessarily work well in theaters anymore in terms of the economics, audiences still want to see those movies. The demand for those is not gone away, but the value inflection that comes from going to a movie theater versus what you can watch in your home where you've got a really great TV and maybe a cool sound bar. That has changed. And so Netflix has essentially said, hey, these movies that Disney or universal or whomever Sony can't necessarily distribute because they have to worry about different economics in a theatrical model. Netflix is saying, we'll make them. And now we see Netflix dominating at the Oscars for the last few years. That's a really good point because when I think about where I might actually go to the theater, it would be for one of these big budget action films. But if I want to watch more thoughtful, quieter, more artistic movie, I do want to see that in the comfort of my own home. The best way to think about the theatrical model working in 2022 is SQL superheroes and scaries. Effectively, if you're within those three categories, there's a good chance that your movie is gonna make a big return on investment because what do people want out of SQL superheroes and scaries? A communal experience that is powered by really strong technology performance, they can't get at home. How much of the nominations this year really reflect what people are actually watching and enjoying? I would say more than usual actually, this has been a criticism that the academy has received for many, many years. And actually, if you look at the data behind it, the years in which they nominate more typical blockbusters, the viewership for the Academy Awards has gone up, which makes sense. People want to tune in to watch awards for movies that they have seen. Typically because the Oscar movies only have to be in theaters for a week or two before they get nominated, they usually come out towards the end of December, and they only play in coastal cities. But what Netflix and all these global streamers have done is effectively redefined why distribution. Now it's available to 200 million global subscribers. And so I think the Oscars this year really reflect a lot of the movies that people have had access to for the first time in a long time. There is so much more data about the kinds of movies that people watch at home. How is that shaping the revenue model for which movies get made and then get put forward for things like the Oscars? One data point we should examine is pre-pandemic, so going up to 2019, less people were going to theaters on average. However, box office revenue actually increased or remained about the same. What that tells us is that more people are going to watch one type of movie at theaters. And again, that's your sequels, your scaries, your superheroes. Those are the movies that perform. And when you look at a calendar year in terms of theatrical releases, it gets really cramped. And so you have to kind of compete along that line. What do people want? What we have to produce those types of movies. When we look at the economic value for something like Netflix, movies like musicals, westerns, they perform well for Netflix in the way that their revenue model needs, which is not only the first 28 days of performance, which is opening weekend, second weekend, but does that movie become a high retention title? So for Netflix, if they can maintain their subscriber rate if Netflix can maintain engagement and most crucially high risk customers who will cancel, so those are the ones who don't really use Netflix at all. That is a huge win for them in a way that it isn't for studio looking at theatrical box office revenue as the main point of are we going to make our return on investment here? Julia Alexander is a senior strategy analyst.

"Kristen Stewart for Spencer, none of these films are nominated for best picture, but there are some strong performances here Glen what do you think? This surprise here for me was penalty cruised in parallel mothers because while that is a solid Elmo of our film, it's very melodramatic. And she kind of grounds it, so it makes sense there. Kristen Stewart had been counted out. She didn't get nominated for a BAFTA. She got shut out, so people were counting her out, but counted her out too soon, missing here is Lady Gaga for House of Gucci. But you know sometimes there could be a hundred people in a room and you know it just doesn't work out for you. A lot of time, no Jennifer Hudson, but, you know, I think this is a solid representation, but some real surprises here. Yeah, a very non musical category. They could have nominated a lot of heim for the pizza Jennifer Hudson for respect. Right. You mentioned Lady Gaga, House of Gucci really took a thrashing in these nominations of there was a lot of expectation that Lady Gaga would get nominated. Jared Leto didn't get nominated. This is sometimes what happens when you make a really bad movie. Yeah. Absolutely. All right, so best actor in a leading role, Javier Bardem for being the ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch for the power of the dog Andrew Garfield for tick tick boom. Will Smith for king Richard and Denzel Washington for the tragedy of Macbeth, Glenn any surprises here? I wasn't participating in Javier Bardem actually. I was expecting something else. But, you know, it's good to see Edgar Garfield for tick tick boom. It's, you know, his first attempt at a musical. He does really good job there. But I did cumberbatch had the early lock on at least a nomination, but I think it's great to see Will Smith and Denzel Washington in this. Yeah. It'll be interesting to see how this race plays out. Actor in a supporting role here in Hines for Belfast, Jesse Plemons for the power of the dog, Cody Smith mcphee for the power of the dog, J. K. Simmons for being the ricardos and Troy kotzer for coda Troy katzer is the first death male acting nominee. Glenn, there are some surprises here. Yeah, yeah, I was a little sad that we don't see any Zola in any of these acting nominations, not for Taylor page, not for colon Domingo here. The Jesse Plemons thing didn't surprise me he'd been kind of trending. All of these nominees except for J. K. Simmons, this is their first nomination, and that's good to see even somebody as who's been acting as much as kiran Hines. Bradley Cooper missing out for licorice pizza surprised me because that was certainly a much talked about and very memorable performance. J. K. Simmons has been around the block. He won for whiplash in this category before. And I didn't anticipate him being in the running for being Ricardo's, but here he is. Yeah, I mean, I think Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto from House of Gucci were slotted into a lot of people's predictions and that Jared Leto performance. It's committed. I'm delighted to see Troy kotzer here. It's an interesting field. So best actress in a supporting role Jesse Buckley for the lost daughter, Ariana de Bose for west side story, Judi Dench for Belfast, kyrsten dunst for the power of the dog and ingenue Ellis for king Richard who I loved so much in that movie. Glen, what do you think? Well, I think the academy has been making a big thing about hope in the last 5 years, they've been trying to get their voting membership younger and more diverse, much appreciated. Ellis nomination, you see some of that. Ariana debose was inevitable. But I think you see the limitations of that when you see Judi Dench. Right..

"Well, we got a mix here, right? Kind of straight up the middle Oscar kind of films like Belfast and we knew dune was going to get in there. We knew that the dog was going to be powerful. Sure. And then west side story would get some love. What? I don't think a lot of people were predicting would be the drive my car did as well as it did here because it's not only got best picture nomination. It also got best international feature best directing and best adapted screenplay. The one that I thought came out of completely nowhere was nightmare alley. No one was talking about that as a best picture nominee. Well, I think one thing that you have here is the change brought about by the decision to make there be a solid ten nominees. For the past few years, you had this thing where it could be anywhere from 5 to ten based on the number of first place votes and a bunch of other algorithms that are too complicated to digest let alone explain. This year there were always going to be ten. So that was always going to leave room for some surprises. Definitely made it more likely that a feature like drive my car that has so much critical buzz made that much likelier than a movie like that would get in as well as a little bit of like a more minor pleasure of a movie like coda, which wouldn't necessarily make the cut in a 5 film field. And this is what the Oscars are really good for. It's picking films that people might not otherwise see and get them some attention. So if more people see coda, that's a plus. I agree. I love coda. All right, the nominees for best directing. We've already mentioned a few of these films, but Roy ruska, hamaguchi is nominated for drive my car, Paul Thomas Anderson for licorice pizza, Jane campion for the power of the dog. Steven Spielberg for west side story and Kenneth Branagh for Belfast, we should note here that Kenneth Branagh now has 7 career Oscar nominations in 7 different categories that is a record Glen what do you think of this field? The big snub here is Denis Villeneuve for dune. She joins the ranks of directors who have not been nominated even though their film has for best picture. Jane campion is the first woman ever to be nominated twice for best director the first time was for the piano. And if she wins, she will only be the third woman to ever win best director. Wow. It's crazy. In 2022, yeah. Yeah, not nominating Denis Villeneuve, considering what a technical marvel that film, I found that really, really surprising. It is surprising. It's going to be a fight between in my opinion, the power of the dog and Belfast between camp and abruna and for best picture. They are such completely different films, one is feel good. What is feel dark? One is field portentous. Yes. That's one of those feel loss of faith in mankind and what you could. Yes. All right, well, best actress in the leading role you've got Jessica Chastain for the eyes of Tammy Faye, Olivia Colman for the lost daughter, Penélope Cruz for parallel mothers, Nicole Kidman for being the Ricardo's and.

I mean I don't know why people breaking bones more than ever. I just think they're bored at home. They're just getting looking for things to do. Yeah so you know. So Daniel for instance. "The film's quite good in the film and I think that That whole thing of like what Gary Oldman did with Winston Churchill like. That's a that's a proven winner. I think that the Margot go nomination. is really probably comes down to that moment where. She's being humiliated by Roger Ailes. John Lithgow is Roger. Orioles I feel is pretty amazing in his movie. That felt a flat to me. That seem really stood out for being horribly uncomfortable but really well acted yeah. I think that's that's probably the same way that Kathy Bates is seen where she's kind of like tip on tiptoes to get over the microphone crying talking son like that's that's where you're like. Yeah I think think that's Marcus and she also has that kind of Cathartic scene toward the end where she's on the phone and she cries and kind of just like she says how she's feeling and in in doing so gives voice to so many women in just about Margo and yeah. Yeah yeah that like almost kind of she says what what people have been thinking in a way that like an and in that moment is is powerful. I think it's a I think it's a justified nomination. I also think that like didn't hurt that she had you know Sharon tate also this year last year. Like I I for me that's She's not the one of the supporting people who would be laying about I mean that's the thing is I wouldn't I mean I don't know if they're all good. It's not it's not it's not again. It's not their fault. Frighten the your Robin Williams in good will hunting Kylie Matt Damon. We're going to talk about who's going to win for the next couple of weeks. I do still feel like we could wind up with a really good set of Oscar winners I'm which is a nice thing to think about. It means. Maybe I'm overly optimistic but I don't know like what are you looking for over the next few weeks as this develops I've become weirdly invested even though I'm I don't know what I am about joker but like Hilter Guana daughter the the Yes the composer who won the Golden Globe. Like I think she would become the third woman to win a score Oscar become invested in that That that'd be cool. I'm so nice that really made. It made me root for her She's Icelandic our colleague. We need to get her on the podcast. Who Really? He truly pronounce her Kim. I'm sure but we're going to miss next week. We will can we just before I I I I want to hear what you guys are all excited for. But I'm just I was noticing scrolled through. Is it weird that frozen to didn't get an animated feature nomination Joanna's there's your field. Hey well if you WANNA pick up our awards issue though we coming out we have a story about this. Yeah this is you know we we talk about this a little bit before on the podcast. This idea that the into the spider verse win last year really emboldened a lot of other studios to really push to see if they could. Did you know either get nominated or even win. The prize over Disney Disney obviously has dominated this category for most of its entire existence and so so As members of voting bodies which a lot of us are on this podcast. I Dunno if you experience Richard but I got a lot of a promotional material for both of the netflix titles and the Lakers a title missing link. And so I'm not. I'm not surprised on his lead to I see them all in there. I am a little surprised that frozen to didn't get I like. I didn't think it would go that far. But that's where we are. This is a battle of the Disney sequels else and toy story for edged out which makes sense like toy story? It's got a pretty long standing reputation. This category yeah. I was surprised to frozen. She's still getting mm for song which that would have been really nuts if it hadn't gotten there even at the song racist here is kind of a loose Elton. John is fine. They didn't get into song so beyond say remains as a snub by the Oscars. Yeah but the Elton Win Will be you know the representation of the beauty that was rocket man. We couldn't and get through this episode without me saying that Tear it and I will be taking the week off and go into Malta. And just you know taking taking a break from social media In let us know I I think I think Taryn winning the Globe and not getting nominated for the Oscar honestly. Sounds kind of right to me But I'm really glad that he wanted the globe so is I'm GonNa love me again. which is a song for rocket man? Is that somehow a response to. You're GonNa love me from dreamgirls. Yeah it's all throwing dirt on Jennifer Hudson Oscar. Buzz Green from cats What about Two popes Yankee you know what I again for. All the actor was a tricky race. It would have. It's hard to like root for the two white guys who got nominated given everything that we just talked about. But I do think Author price getting his first Oscar. Nomination is something we can get behind the best supporting actor Races Really Wild Anthony Hopkins got nine for two popes. So best supporting actor. Stephen Get it right. It's Brad Pitt. Plus Oscar winners from ninety nine hundred ninety two ninety three and I think also ninety three ninety four because Tom Hanks twice. It's it's really a weirdly stacked Blake numerology thing So Congratulations Anthony Hopkins for. I don't know that very well. Okay but Christoph Waltz won his second supporting actor Oscar the a year when everyone nominated had one. Yeah and this year all but one have been not have one but Pitt is in turn Tina movie. We'll be like Christoph. Waltz was so pissed win I mean this is the acting categories field field. I mean you said we're not going to talk about who's GonNa win right now but like acting categories feel done right on the data. Yeah I was GONNA say I'm looking for any sign that Rene You know I guess I guess at this point Joaquin right like for a week ago or two weeks ago would have said it's Joaquin. Were Adam at this point. Really strongly feels like Joaquin A- Rene and Laura Dern Right any sign that that's not the case will be very interesting but I at this point on eating and I mean I think yeah I think my my hope for a shake-up they're not that. I am rooting against any of those people necessarily but my hope for a shakeup there was like one. There's big lakes surprising and exciting nominations in any of the acting categories and. They don't think we got those Very Adam. Yeah right yeah or or Eddie Murphy or something like that so I think I think we're like Oh. They're all voting. How we kind of thought they were going to a couple of months ago? I see With the exception of lake sort of a parasite boom for me you asked a a year ago. Katie what we were looking for two on the nineteen seventeen trade and I'm just going to ride it till at the end area. I've I've picked my horse. It's going to be the bad guy like now. Everyone's tired joker being the bad guy. So now nine hundred seventeen the new bad guy so best of luck Iran is GONNA be. I also like lady nine hundred seventeen. We can band together. What we think I mean so you guys think that it's nine hundred seventeen once upon a time in Hollywood and parasites brace brace for picture? Picture seems to me that you can't actually count out Irishman Joe Joe Rabbit or joker. Can you probably not I mean yeah I mean anyone who liked confidently says you know what's GonNa Happen to the Oscars it's like asking to be proven wrong I think Joe Rabbit maybe would be the one of the most of that list. Because I'm not sure what it's going to win of anything like judge Robert could easily win. No Oscars Yeah yeah and maybe for Irishman which is wild so like in terms of like what you kind of see running through it like nine hundred seventeen and joker have all these technical nominations the nation. So you can imagine one or one of them running the table of them kind of splitting it amongst themselves. And then we'll spend time in Hollywood parasite having the most director. Buzz like it does feel like director would probably be Tarantino or or maybe send Mendis. So that's what I think. The director races. What what tips it? Over in favor of those to reinvest picture we need to get like an an MIT scientists in here to really talk about tier balloting. Because like I'm now thinking like okay but what's ever what's number. Two whenever wins ballots GONNA win. You know you know we need to get like a social social psychologist and a mathematician with what's number two on the ballots of people whose who have the least favorite right least popular number one. So I guess you're looking at I don't know either for men. Murray story like people who love those. What's their next Ford Board? Were spurrier big studio films. That like did pretty well at the box office. Does that mean they'll like once upon a time in Hollywood better or yeah right. I mean parasite honestly feels like a really strong number two. You don't like like everyone liked it. And even if they don't put number one they would probably put it at number or to say the same thing for time in Hollywood. I think it's a little bit more divisive but it has it employed half of Hollywood credit going for it but yeah yeah you can make the case for either of those. I think in in a dream world for me right bunging Ho wins director nineteen seventeen wins picture and Tarantino gets his screenplay play Oskar and that is a very decent prediction. You know so well guys. Are you ready to do three more weeks of this and then it'll be over so much faster turn it usually is. Does he gets going any faster than usual. I was GONNA make Katie. Saying that's a very decent prediction my ringtone and the approval for the rest of the US. I'm going to Sundance next week. What a new movie? Apparently I'm going to have a whole dispatch for about you now. Amy Ryan's Big Oscar. You're twenty twenty This has been a very fast year and We're almost to the end. which is exciting? Yeah I like like your optimism that like despite my ex essential Malays about some of the nominees like that. There could still be a great show. Where like really good people win and Exciting things happen The possibility has been made possible by by these nominations. which at least you have to remind yourself self? Like I'm excited for Laura Dern to have an Oscar. Her performance and marriage story has been such a steamroller that it's easy to forget that she doesn't already have an Oscar. So that's going to be really satisfying same with Brad. Pitt's in a lot of these people need to an apology. Note to Allison Janney and be like look. It's not you the movie I love you man. You have an Oscar. I like I like story but like if I was so in the tank for Jaylo that like Now I have to just like reconcile that and be like okay. Like Large Ernst Great. Yeah well we'll be back for the next couple of weeks We are planning to watch all the shorts again somehow in this truncated season and then cover the PGA jealous pain the super bowl roles. So that's GONNA come in the middle of all this although it's not going to be the Oscar campaign strategy I once believed it would be so. We'll have lots to talk about in the weeks to come and then February is GonNa show up up and then Richard. We'll have seen next year's best picture at Sundance behind And I will be doing once again. Recap the Oscars twenty years ago. which is the American.

"The way that it did even a couple of weeks ago even with that nominations hall does it. Does it feel as kind of or why do I feel like it's it's been kinda weakened by this news is just like that. It didn't get a couple of crafts saying or is it something else. I think that the continue. Will you know snubbing or whatever you WANNA call it. Deniro is evidence that does not have coalition support. You know lick it does not have I think that if that was kind of more of a watershed movie this year of for awards awards voters like he would be in every single one of those conversations. Yes enough people voted to get both supporting actors in there so like there is support obviously got best picture best director but like. I don't know I think that that movies. Momentum is sort of you know illustrated by Deniro being blanked kind of consistently in that category. I mean I think the Globes shouldn't but did impact the look of the race. You know the fact that that Scorsese sat there and didn't didn't get anything. Yeah all night I think. The nineteen seventeen sort of surge is not good for the Irishman. 'cause they're both these sort of like wadey kind of if male. I mean there's a lot of weighty mail stuff this year skinny mail stuff yeah I don't know I mean it does have a lot I mean it. It has like most of the main things you'd want editing screenplay director And two supporting actor nominations. I mean that was nice to see Apache and Pacino. Get in there so I don't. I think there's still time I think there is time for net flicks. I don't think Netflix has done what needs to do. And this is not the first time I'm talking about this either on the podcast in terms of framing y. You know it's urgent to to give an a big award to Scorsese see for this movie But but I think that the best picture race is still mixed enough time to do that. You know I mean I I've right. I mean looking at best picture. It's not immediately obvious now. I certainly don't think joker is is a slam dunk by any means. I think nineteen seventeen you know is not necessarily a slam slam dunk Either once upon time in Hollywood. I think it's still a fairly open race. That feels like the biggest category with the big question marks on right right at this point. Yeah I would say once upon a time in Hollywood versus nineteen seventeen versus parasite in the top three spots. And I don't it feels like it could go in many in different directions and truly any of those three could win best picture and it would feel plausible with With the Irish and this feels like third or fourth year That we've been doing this. PODCAST is that there's been like a movie out of New York that got rhapsodic reaction. That just didn't hit Hollywood in the same way right like Roma being last ears or the post and Selma like like I feel like New York screenings and then like everyone's like this is it. We found it. This is the movie and then Hollywood like yeah. It's all right. You know anytime lake. That's it seems to be a trend. I also kind of going back to what what you were saying about. The joker in terms of like people considering politics I'm all I'm kind of wondering like is Deniro's constant like as about about trump like like I know that that that's not a hugely really trump supporting voting body in the academy. But like I don't do. Do you think people were sort of like shut up like you know like. Do you think there are annoyed by him or something. I don't know I think there. Well I think there's an insecurity in Hollywood about about being political. Yeah and turning off the audience so maybe filling anything anyone's earned it. It's Deniro but yeah this guy guy is a nut I love it. It's so funny. When parasites showed up in production design and editing? I got really excited did appreciate I was my favorite movie of last year. It does feel like this weird x-factor it's the first South Korean film to Ever Be Nominated for any Oscars which is really thrilling. Did get that crap support like it could have gotten best picture best director in four language film. We've been like okay. Yeah that's what we expected but it did butter than that which has been kind of bullish on it especially with best picture being so fuzzy right now. It'd be great What I feel like that'd be really crowd-pleasing I like? I haven't talked to anyone who doesn't think it's great so you know it's a hit ahead. It's a threat and I. It would be nice to not have a device a winner. But you know it doesn't have to be pleasing to me to be a good one but but yeah anyway. Yeah I I think it's a really a really good sign it's A. It's you know acting nominations in there. I don't know what the statistics are unlike. Like a film winning best picture without a single acting nomination But that that is a disappointment I think today but I do think yes. I think we're looking for wins or things that are cool and fun and square with like I think the vision that some of us have for the Oscars. There's like parasite coming through with with the big three nominations. The big two of picture and and director in addition to Foreign and having editing thing. That's really that's really exciting. I mean it really has actually. It's interesting if you look at editing. Where some people say? You can't win. Best Picture without editing. It's Ford v Ferrari the Irishman Joe Rabbit Joker and parasite. So I mean that's wild once about Hollywood not being in there really surprised and nineteen seventeen not not being in. Yeah well you know. They had to plan all those edits way ahead of time. Say like the editing on nineteen seventeen different birdman also wasn't dominate for best editing. And it went. Are we really. Are we really buying idea that this was like an easy movie to edit. I don't think it's I was. There was a tweet discussion discussion about this last night. I think it's it's that You know a lot of people especially think in the editing branch of the academy. Think that editing is where the story is told and and if you plan out everything so meticulously to look like there is no editing. Yeah they think Oh. That's not. That's not our job assault on editing. Right they won the critic's Choice Award for editing last night. And then yeah I saw a bunch of Folks on twitter kind of sully about that being like ooh voting buddy. That doesn't understand Dan. The Art of editing is the So according to vox the last film to win best picture without a single acting nomination was there. So that's two thousand eight not so long ago not so long ago no well and somewhat similar situation there where you had a cast that was not known to Hollywood and you know would be would become but not at the time. Yeah yeah that was. That was a pretty feel-good movie compared to parasite though Oh. I don't know what sometime millionaire it was. You know very cheerful at the empire site so a little bit more Downer. There should've been a bollywood. Did it's not too late to release. I would ask the Snyder of Harrison What else are you guys? Happy about. Today I feel like we should get into some of the very glaring disappointments. But what what. What excited you in this list? I think I wrote about this in our snubs and surprises post. I I oh I think it's cool that honey land got two nominations one for international future. which is the re titled Foreign Language and also documentary. I think it's it's super rare that a documentary henry gets into that Used to be foreign language category and I think that the fact that it's in both those categories whoever was doing the nominating was paying attention. They were Ah. That's a movie that I think probably is a hard screener set because it's about a woman alone in Macedonia like the people show up eventually but like you know it's it's not it's not initially a very engaging movie in its way but that may be really happy and made me think that if if you know at the very least there are some thinking people the academy and that's something you champion to on your top ten list of the year so that was why I had heard about it. Oh It's me. It's because resolutions solutions. I did have a best documentary feature winner love and Oscar last year. Let me hold her Oscar at the Party and tell me this is partly yours so uh I will say. It wasn't like a massive surprise but I was really happy. See Florence Pugh. Get her nothing. I was yeah I was happy. I was really happy to see that. I mean we'll talk about the best supporting actress category. But nothing really talk Lord's Pew Pew. You had such a great great year and so I'm really happy to see this like welcoming her into Hollywood. Yeah the performance of women overall and we could talk about the best director as although I had. I definitely given up thinking Greta Gerwig. We'll get in there but after all the reporting the answering president did about how men just weren't seeing little women. I had totally brace myself for a best picture snub for being anywhere. So the fact they got in for screenplay picture and the two acting nominations that was really believed. Yes I would agree with that and I guess relief also is is my feeling about Cynthia. Revo coming in to just you know make this not like a completely regis your although it came very close with within the let's let's talk about came way closer than comfort to another Oscarssowhite year which would have been a disaster. Like it's still pretty disastrous. The fact that you have one actor of color And notably left out Jennifer Lopez. Like I mean I I would hope that the academy would do some soul-searching after this but also after all the efforts to diversify the membership. I'm not not sure what else they can do. It feels like such a mess. Here is where I think that defiance to think pizzas comes in. I think in the acting categories categories the actors. Who Do this nominating like? No it is about. Who is the best this year? I'm not gonNA play by these sort of quota games and these percentiles. Whatever I think I I think that's where you see? Some of the stubbornness you know being like. I'm not gonNA nominate someone just because she's Latino or because you know whatever out. Because they're Korean. You know I I think I think again. We're all just imagining interpreting here. But like that to me feels where it's most pointed. Yeah and then I feel like it. The next the thing that happens is that that same person is not examining any of their own sort. Of course you know assumptions right and so- movies that are about men shooting each other like Ah Oscar movies and movies that are about women you know using their bodies to make money and scan people or not US movies and And on down the line and and I feel like you know that would be a good maybe productive conversation to have next about like what what we really you know. Want to use this Annual opportunity to celebrate art four you know. Is it just to kind of say like no big epic movies about like combat are what we are here for or are we trying to like continue evolve. What cinema does and how it speaks to people so I don't know I mean it's tricky because we're we're four very white people talking talking about the the question of diversity In these acting nominations or any of these nominations but So I will just tread lightly lately in reflect some conversations that I've seen from People color saying that they're especially frustrated this year about what kind signed of roles for people of Color Women of Color specifically that the academy is comfortable nominating and scenario playing Harriet Tubman is a kind kind of role that the Kademi has filed nominating whereas something like Lupita performance. An is You know is not necessarily so those are biases is that exists for actors. Always I think the idea that you play an important historical figure in a bio-pic as an easy route to a nomination playing like someone like a stripper and as you know pseudo comedy. That set in the president like isn't as much but yeah it becomes even harder on actresses or color. People are color because they have so few opportunities to jump up to the Oscars in the first place. Oh I am not getting the way I'm not talking about playing like a number and I'm talking about women of Color. Black women specifically being nominated for playing people associated slave narratives like Yes I mean. Mark Harris read about Jennifer Lopez's snub in his piece. I thought was really interesting. Like just pointing out that yeah. She played a character who user sexuality is professional professional survivor tool and didn't regret it. But the Cabbie wants is for her to scrub off her makeup and play poor. Mother dying something who tries to find somebody to take care of her kids. They WANNA roll. That says look how serious I am. Look how willing to punish myself so for you which I think is right and you know she was so powerful better performance was that it was as incandescent star persona embracing of who she she was and for someone who like hasn't been taken seriously..

"Joining me on this podcast slash weekend editor. Brad Omlund hey that's me it writer widely everyone one okay. So this morning everybody got up early to For the Oscar nominations. Basically you know in advance of the Academy Awards they announce all the nominated films. This is you know a big Shindig that happens every year and always there surprises there snub. CBS we'll get to that But I guess let's let's go through the main categories I guess actually itchy. What what is the big story? GotTa this is a joker. Yeah Joker is leading the pack with a lemon eleven nominations and that's the Muslim nations of all the other films though. Irishman Irishman wants part. Time in Hollywood in nineteen seventeen trail closely behind with ten nominations each but it seems that joker is the front runner for this last year and already earning a lot of ir amongst film twitter which I hate to say that word but yes. It's it's become this year's years green book I I think it's safe to say way. What is becoming? The joker has But it seems like the academy likes it a lot. You know after covering this industry for fifteen years I've I've really not care about the about award season. I used used to be so into it before it got into writing about movies. I you know the Kaddoumi Wardrobe make my super bowl. Like I would be so excited. Sit Down that night Mike. Watch the Academy Awards and I don't know what it is after. You're discovering I've cared less and less but why should we care of the Academy Adamy. Words is it because I mean obviously there's some financial Stuff here right like if a film Win Academy Award. That means that more people are go to see that film and also the people involved. Methadone won't get a better chance of making something cooler and better in the future and in addition does that. I think it's a barometer of history right like we look back. Probably wrongfully like what films were you know nominated won the Academy Academy Awards in years past. Is that why we should care. I think yeah you basically said it. All it's still an industry benchmark and despite spider grousing about what films got now made. What films didn't it still is? A big barometer for. What movies mattered that year and has been a bright launchpad ad for rising filmmakers? The reason that Greta Gerwig and able to do Vernay have such Standing as they do now because they got nominated for a best picture sure and I don't think that if they had if they hadn't gone those nomination I don't think they would have quits the club. They have now And but you know the Oscars often. It didn't more often than not get it wrong. I saw a tweet. Today's comparing the eleven nominations that joker had versus the four nominations that texture ashtrays had and zero nominations. That King of comedy had which is hilarious since the since Joker is very heavily inspired by both S. T. D.'s. That is funny. Brad what do you think like. Should we like. How much do you care about the Oscars? I like watching them. You know I enjoy the movies is that I really love Also championed by the Academy But continuing I'd just wish that they would get a little bit more diversified both in the nation of of underrepresented races and also just different kinds of stories. They're they're always obsessed with certain kinds of movies every single year and I wish they would just get a little bit more Bold and brave and really recognized movies that deserve to be recognized simply. Because you know like the the biggest bummer about you know things like female Directors not getting recognized in the best actor category at Saks because Continues to keep you know directors at a distance in the overall industry. You know the reason that Someone said this on twitter and unfortunately I forget who but like the reason people know more about Greta. Gerwig in Asia do Rene. Today is because they've been nominated for Academy Awards before and so then with the more you nominate funeral directors more. You'll get to know them. And the more they'll get higher to be able to do high profile projects and you know produce that get nominated for more Oscars. It's interesting a few years ago. Oscars there was the whole Oscar. So white thing to happen in social media and it seemed like the kind of responded to that in a big way but it it seems to have kind of gone back. Yeah hasn't it like like it seems like there's some notable filmmakers of diversity in both sex sex and color that like miserably missing from these awards. We'll get to that okay. Let's talk about the best picture nominees. We'll just talk about the big ones here Best Picture We have a longer. We have four verse. Ferrari the Irishman Jeju. Rabbit Joker little women marriage story nineteen seventeen once upon upon a time in Hollywood in parasites. So what do you guys think about. What is are you excited about any of these like that that they made it in? Are you upset that anything everything did make. I'm quite excited about a few of these Parasite for one is a major Nomination because not only is the first South South Korean Films Ever Get nominated for an Oscar. got both a best picture nomination as well as best foreign language film which makes the six films ever get Both those those categories Be Nominated for both those categories and It was kind of something that was expected. Because parasite is one of the most Acclaimed Lane films of the year and spinning nonstop. Positive buzz so people were really gunning for that best picture nomination but one that I was really pleasantly surprised to see nominated because has it hadn't been getting any awards. Buzz Was Little Women and this is the film that I absolutely adore door and it's getting a lot of critical praise as well but there was that story a couple of weeks ago I don't WanNa see little woman who was talking to Academy voters Male voters specifically clea who talked unanimously. But how they didn't WanNa see little men because they they didn't think it was for them and they didn't want to put in the time to watch it and it was something something that I think was really stacking the odds against little women Because a lot of people hadn't seen it although I do think that it was starting to gain more exposure and buzz after its holiday release and I was just so happy to see its best picture. Not because it gotten the shaft and so many of the previous Awards the ceremonies except for Sir Sharon For Best Actress but like all the other nominations even Greta Gerwig didn't get a lot of best director. Nominations Ashi doesn't here but I was really the happy to see a best picture nod for little woman. I still have not seen little women. I'M GONNA have to see it. I I know but I've seen like two of the film adaptions today. I'm not a big fan of the the story. I'm not a big period. Drama Kinda Guy I I used to. I grew up in Massachusetts. Actually not that far I mean You know a drive away from the little women House the House That I guess it was based on none I wanNA. I don't even know at this point so sadly I I I don't hate little women. I'm not a guy that doesn't want to see a movie about little women. It's just I I've never I like Greta Gerwig so much so I'm going to have to give it a chance now but I think that she has such a great modern approach to this film. I think he would really like it. Even if you don't like period films but also you didn't like the favorite so I don't really no but I encourage you to give a chance little woman because it is so fantastic and the Portland says are all stellar. So it's just a movie that fills your heart though I highly recommend seeing it before the Oscars at least a. I'm excited. That marriage story made it. I knew that it was probably going to get some nominations. And in the acting categories but I'm glad it was one of my favorite films this year. And I'm glad that it's a picture bread. Do you have any surprises snubs. He's here in the best picture. Category Well I'm very excited. The JITTER AVID got nominated I. It seemed fairly likely Even though it wasn't necessarily universally Lee received by people in the critical community and in the film community some people. Just don't Accept the stat tire and how it approaches World War Two when Nazis in the Holocaust. But I love that movie so glad that it got nominated and yeah. I think that the one problem I have with this Run since there's only nine films uh-huh is that there should have been attentive nominated since they can have ten films and that final movie should've been the farewell fair enough okay. Let's best director rector actually bread if you had to pick not what you want to win but what is going to what is going to win. Best Picture I'm honestly fleet not entirely sure but it's it's tough because we're basing all the love for the joker today. It seems like the economy is really in for that but the academy also loves movies about you know old Hollywood so once upon a time in Hollywood is a front runner too you so if I had to guess for sure I would probably say joker or once upon a time in Hollywood Scorsese is like on the in New York that he rarely early gets dominations gets gets the statue I should say I I think I think you're right. I think it's it's probably be joker. Okay who who do you think it's going to be I. Am You have a hard time like what you want into win if it. If it's joker I will riot but I get the sinking feeling that it's joker but I do want to say one great thing about parasite is that a lot of the Oscar Academy voter buzz around it From what I've seen on twitter and people who report it frequently on the Oscar trail is that parasite is one of the films that hasn't gotten any detractors yet. From any of the voters like their films that people say. Oh it's great but this like Like once time in Hollywood. It's great but this violence or Irishman is great. But it's long but parasite according to the the. The buzz has not gotten any of that negative reactions. It's going to get the It's great but we're GONNA vote for that for the foreign though. I mean probably but let you know a fine joker. Whatever I don't care I will say best? Like a joker is an exceptionally well made film and I think in in every single category except for story like it is firing on all cylinders. It's just unfortunate because you know movies are storytelling media so so I think that script is pretty weak. So I think it's probably GonNa be joker sadly But Yeah I. I don't want to be down on joker because because I I do think there is You know it is a well-made film Okay let's talk about best director We have Would we have five nominees air. We have the Irishman Martin Scorsese. We have joker Todd Phillips. We've nineteen seventeen Mendez. We've once upon a time in Hollywood Winter Tino and Parasite Bong Jun Wu. Oh and What here is there any? I guess there's a bunch of snow here. Hd You mentioned earlier little women as a surprise is in the best picture category. Yes Greta GERWIG 's name is missing from this director list. I think Greta Gerwig far away. Deserves that best director slot that taught Philip says and I think that she directs little woman with such confidence and precision and such modern it modernity to it that She if if it's going to be best picture nominated it should definitely be a desert Does is definitely deserving that best director nod and it would break up the sausage best that is currently inhabiting the best director category. I I just I do think that Greta Gerwig is one of the directors of this generation and It's a travesty that she has been nominated for this film which I actually liked even better than lady bird and I am. I'm upset about it. I am in a rage. Well you know what Brad..

Deserves that best director slot that taught Philip says and I think that she directs little woman with such confidence and precision and such modern it modernity to it that She if if it's going to be best picture nominated it should definitely be a desert Does is definitely deserving that best director nod and it would break up the sausage best that is currently inhabiting the best director category..
