"We don't remember Patrick Ewing. On the Orlando Magic. We never talk about Akeem Elijah Juan, who ended his career with the Toronto Raptors. We don't talk about Emmett Smith plan for the Arizona Cardinals. Like we remember them at their best. We remember them when they were playing at a great and high level. We're not going to get the storybook ending for Russell Westbrook. And it was somewhat easy to see coming. If you see how he plays his usage rate. I said this a couple of years ago and I got absolutely crushed. By people when I said this, but the the trajectory for Russell Westbrook was Allen Iverson. Allen Iverson was an elite player and an elite scorer in the NBA up until age 33. Then it completely fell apart. So Iverson averaged 33 points at 30. He averaged 26 points in 2006. He averaged 26 points in 2000 and seven at age 32. He then played after that, two more years in the league, and it was over like it was pretty easy to spot. Iverson are excuse me. Russell Westbrook is going to end up being the exact same as Allen Iverson. If you look at how his body is going to fall apart If you look at how his game is going to fall apart. I mean, you can see it as clear as day. So Russell Westbrook is 31 years old. 31 We saw a little bit of a decline, especially when it comes to the jump shot. I and you're seeing that Russell's jump shot is broken, and I think a lot of it his legs and strength and durability and all of those things. Kind of started happening with Iverson at this stage in his career, too. So Russell Westbrook looks like he is going to be on his third team. In three seasons. He was on the thunder. He was on the Rockets, and he is already asking for a trade and wants to play in a different system. Then the one that he was currently playing in the thing that sort of tickled my fancy the most is I was reading about this story over the course of the week was that Russell wants to play in a system similar to the one that he played with. In Oklahoma City. What is that system? Is it dominating the basketball and scoring a lot of points But having absolutely no chance to win? Because I'm sure you can find that situation? I'm sure the Sacramento Kings are happy to give you that. The Knicks and we'll talk about the Knicks here are happy to give you that situation. But Let's not kid ourselves. No team in the MBA. That is a legitimate Title contending team is trading for Russell Westbrook, who was still do Ah $130 million over the next three seasons. There's no team In the MBA. That is taken on that contract. That's good. There's some bad teams that will take that deal. The New York Knicks. The Charlotte Hornets will probably end up taking that deal. Maybe the Clippers roll the dice. And think that he fits alongside Kawai Leonard. Maybe And they use Paul George, and they try to get back some draft picks that they gave up in the Paul George trade to try to get themselves back into it. Maybe that's the play. But the Clippers are the on Lee good team that I could see making the trade for Russell Westbrook. There's no other legitimate title contending team. That I could see making a trade for that contract and the kind of player that is That's a big thing to the kind of player that Russell is. The athleticism. He's starting to decline. The jump shot. In a league that is more spaced out than it's ever been before, and you need to be able to hit jump shots also in the decline. Don't see that There's a good scene that's willing to take that move. I think we're going to end up seeing Russell Westbrook traded to the Knicks. This just feels like a nick thing to do. The Knicks, who have been craving star power since Carmelo Anthony left. Could desperately use a shot in the arm..
Dak Prescott should leave money on table when negotiating new contract, Emmitt Smith says
"Dak Prescott cowboys cornerback fourth round here has finished his rookie deal the cowboys have blown their opportunity to sign him to a long term deal while he was still carrying injury risk now free agent franchise tag long term deal who knows what is going to happen Chris but but the one thing I have to say dak Prescott has resisted every effort by the highly persuasive Jones family Jerry and Steven to get tacked to see if their way and agreed to a contract they want to agree to it has to be driving them crazy they can't get this kid to see it their way and have money left over so they can have a team on the field enter Emmett Smith who once upon a time held out to the regular season cowboys went into without him and then Jerry Jones gave in and got the deal done Emmitt Smith says that cast understand maybe take another perspective the perspective may not be all the money you get but how much of the money you when you leave on the table because the cowboys are marketable organization if you're the face of the franchise instead of taking thirty five million would you take twenty eight million and leave some for Marc Cooper and pick up the difference through endorsements the first all that's a huge gap I am a yes seven million five year deal thirty five million dollars that's a lot that's a hell of a charitable donation to I was a two hundred fifty million dollar job of the five story glass elevator it is a most obscene opulent display of wealth I've ever heard about no you don't need to do Jerry Jones any favors it's up to Jerry Jones a man is a salary cap it's up the dak Prescott to get paid and Jones had his chance to get this guy paid last and they didn't get it done and now they got to deal with the situation of the franchise tag the leverage he has the franchise tag the leverage he has by choosing not to show up until he has a long term deal he wants and I I Jack don't listen Emmitt Smith listen to yourself because you've done it all along get paid every penny you can get go

Frank Gore passes Barry Sanders, hits No. 3 spot on NFL's all-time rushing list
"I'd like to talk about a player on the bills. Offense the man they call the inconvenient truth Mr Franklin Gore now I understand that people who watch the NFL are generally loyal to teams and not players and that everyone has different allegiances. But the fact of the matter is if you don't root for Frank Gore at this point you're just wrong I'm sorry but those are the rules. Gore has been in in this league for fifteen years and on Sunday he passed Barry Sanders to move up to third on the all time rushing list another gift decor by drew over the left side. He gets closer. The first down is down at the forty one yard line. That's a gain of seven and that is enough record is now the third all time leading rusher in NFL history. How about that? You saw it here today folks along with Emmett Smith. He's one of just two running backs to start in over two hundred games with remarkable. Not only because he's thirty six years old when he began colleges quarterback Josh Allen was five but because he's conquered so much for those who are unfamiliar with his life. The story. Here are the broad strokes core grew up in poverty and his mother suffered from addiction. He overcame severe learning disability to get to college and once he got out there he tore his ACL twice and yet fifteen thousand two hundred eighty nine yards later. He still here about a year your ago. I was asked to participate in an NFL insiders panel where we argued why various player should get into the hall of fame. I made the case for Gore. Are The reason why he isn't a shoo-in is that despite his longevity he's never really achieve dominance at his position which I understand but even if he was was never the best he has always been great historic matters deeply to the league into everyone. WHO's been fortunate enough to watch him play? So here's hoping he makes it to sixteen thousand yards.

I guess she got all nine when I think everybody else pretty much. Got All tins but super proud of her. I'm bummed for right now honestly honestly because I thought she should have been at least on the top couple. I was weird when Kelly didn't win the room was angry. Alleys freestyle was frigging amazing. I'm so proud of Lauren. Thank you guys for voting along on watching along but as you can hear my voice a little bomb because Lauren finish four tonight on dancing with the stars but we'll have our back on the show and we're super proud of
Jerry Jones talked the talk. But Ezekiel Elliott knew Cowboys owner would pay up
"Begin begins today with jerry jones closing in on a deal with ezekiel elliott as he said he would elliott has flown back from parts unknown and jones's put the money on the table. The dealers is reported to be somewhere in the neighborhood of ninety million dollars for six years which is a pretty nice neighborhood frank. Did the cowboys do the right thing by showing zeke the money yeah well. We know how it works tony. It's all about the guaranteed money so right now. If it's six years of actually being eight year contract because we being extension still has two years left. I think jerry jones and i think is equal. It all knew that he was going to be backed by week one. I think this whole thing all along him going to mexico wherever he was working out. He knew that he would be back. I think he's our most important offensive player and to the point point. Jerry jones is desperate desperate to win the super bowl and he thinks he needs ezekiel elliott and he didn't wanna missing one game so i'm gonna push back gently because they need suzuki and this had to be done. I'm not sure they need ezekiel elliott right now. This has nothing to do with money. In my mind i think they open with the giants the better team than the giants and the redskins. They're a better team than the redskins. I think what went on in jerry's mine is the specter of emmett smith when they went oh and two and he had to publicly sort of eat crow and go and give him the money now. I think you always want ezekiel elliott and to your point. He is their offense. This is not the kid from san diego dago melvin gordon yeah. They don't really need like you put dak prescott out there without zeke elliott and they don't really have a great offense. I'm just i'm just suggesting that it could have been because they're gonna. They're gonna give him the ball so much that he could get hurt. I could they wait for you. Want load management then in the n._f._l. N._f._l. I want him to make sure if i'm trying to win the super bowl. I wanna make sure i understand there's sixteen games before you get to the price. You're my lead guy but you're bringing being up. Emmett smith and emmett smith played with more battle-tested quarterback number one. Yes a better team. They went on to win the super bowl. This team has a long way to go before they can do that. I guess it's it's too important. You know the gauging your talk just chunking up saying they're they're guaranteed win. I don't i don't but that's how that's what jerry jones said. Maybe we'll get him back in a week. We need them in time for the playoffs. Yes you sure you're gonna make. I'm not saying i would wait till the playoffs. That's what he well. He made it sound like we don't need in the first few weeks. We'll play that is public. Posturing that jerry does very very well but the money's money's on the table

"<hes> so you just you don't really even get into that conversation and again as long as he's here by opening game aimed and we're cool with that but then it becomes more of a management decision and you know you evaluate the value. Everything and I think our team was really based on balance you know Emmett Smith is a big lake part of the offense obviously in offense and running the football and everything we did and I think it was the year before we won the Super Bowl and then we're coming off that and we really knew we he proved himself. Semaine Emmett Smith proved himself and not say that I know Zeke has proved himself but when you're coming off a year like that and you have franchise Emmett Smith obviously all went on to be the all time leading rusher in the national football but we just knew we needed to have that guy and I think that that was the best thing to happen for us as losing those two games. I think we really realize how blatant it was <hes> if we didn't have we didn't have M._S.. Math we weren't going to be able to make another run at it and I think that David seen what they're like without Zeke Elliot and they're not as good obviously he's thirty thirty five percent of their offense something crazy like that he's created and but I think there comes a point where you have to weigh both sides of the professional part of what he brings as a player in all the B._S. that he's brought and I hate to say it but it has been bs. It hasn't been football related. It's been stuff that they'd had endure and you know. Can we trust you. I mean I think look I mean there are certain period of time. No everyone thinks Jerry Jones. Is this dude that leads us players and hope you know he'll get the checkbook out and play but as a negotiator and I think that they're going to try to use that against him and we'll get paid. Yeah I think will get paid. Will the cowboys consider trading hand which people think would just crazy. I mean that's an option because he's in his fifth year. There is <hes> as I said my with my observation. Jason I see a little wear and tear on him and he's getting his fifth year. I mean is it a time. Where the cowboys well you know? We don't want to spend fourteen million dollar and running back that may be a two or three years is going to be done so to speak <hes> and so it did we get value for him and I think that's probably the worst case scenario but it wouldn't surprise me if you don't think about that you mentioned Jerry Jones Yahoo when they reported all this information about the August sixth deadline and whatever <hes> reported that Stephen has kind of in the point man for this we've seen Stephen Jones roll over the last few years and he's really kind of been the head of contract discussion. So you know you mentioned Jerry. Juries buddy your pal drinks from Johnny Walker Blue With you and everything but he's a negotiator. Stephen is is even more negotiator absolutely so you know if it's it's an interesting. It's an interesting position. I mean it's fascinating and I think it's fascinating for running. Backs across National Fuller Guaranteed to Carolina Panthers <unk> are watching this so they know how to handle Christian McCaffrey and the Jaguars fornet and even the giants looking down the Road Saquon Barkley <hes> which you mentioned lady on Bill and let's not forget. He said I want a whole year in las fourteen million dollars and he ultimately got but he will never make that up now he won't and that's true and you know you really. Are you really valent where you just defining or were you just want to okay. I don't think pitcock type of guy but it takes someone really really unique and really just stern and defiant. Were look. I'm going to hold out. I'M GONNA I'M GONNA hold out and not be paid a fourteen million dollar payday the the other thing here and wasn't a first round draft pick so that is a difference but the reason why.

"When I talked about this with stars. As being a conversational piece is an icebreaker you were the longest hold out by a rookie in franchise history. S fake news Dr field, by the way, this fake news TY because if you don't have a contract, I'm not holding out. I'm just negotiating here's where they owners make mistakes. They messed with the chemistry of football team. What kind of owner? Would you be? That's a very good question. You were just listening to my good friend Emmett Smith, you know, him it Smith. He's the NFL's all time leading rusher. Three times Super Bowl champ for the Dallas Cowboys pro football hall of fame. He's also winner of vanishing with the stars who would have ever thought that. But I want to tell you why I wanted to talk to him it for fill in the blanks. This man was a champion on the field. He was a champion off the field while he was playing and he is such a champion since he hung up his helmet and got into the game of life fulltime. He's a respected entrepreneur president and CEO of Emmett Smith enterprises. Pat, an image Smith charities E J Smith construction. I mean, he's busy now is he ever was when he was playing for the Cowboys. He's a good friend of mine. He plays a better game. A golf than I do. I ask him some questions about what was his secret. How did he become such a champion? And sometimes you ask people that and they don't really know what to say Emmett had some very interesting answers. He did not become Emmett Smith by accident. He became Emmett Smith on purpose. The is who he is on purpose. And you're gonna learn some things they're going to change the way you live your life. It's going to change the way you lead your children. So let's stop talking about him. Let's start talking to him which we'll do about well less than one.

"You're in how much weight you're carry kind of health. You have it's not going to change until you put it on project status. Now. Let me explain. Rain something that I think is really important before we get to the core characteristics of a champion and when we get to the core characteristics of champion. I'm going to be telling you what I have learned across time. And you're going to be hearing some quotes from some real champions. I'm talking Charles Barkley, Emmett Smith, Bill Belichick, Shaquille O'Neal and not just athletes. You're going to be hearing from like Ron white one of the most successful comedians in the world. Steve Harvey, one of the most successful television personalities in the world. Vance Lombardi one of the greatest legacies in the history of football. Michael Jordan Muhammad Ali Koby Bryant, Derek jeeter, Billie Jean King. I'm going to be giving you some insight from some of the biggest champions in the history of our country. But I don't want to tell you that at less. You're willing to put yourself on. Project status because if you're not willing to put yourself on project status, and all you're going to do is just have an awareness. I'm wasting my breath in your time. And I don't wanna do either one of those things. So when I say put yourself on project status. I mean, you've got to say I am going to set some goals. I'm going to put them on a time line. And I am going to commit to change. Now. There are four stages of readiness that I want you to understand before we go forward four stages of readiness now stage one is when you are going to commit to a change because it has been assigned by thority. What am I talking about here? Let's say you get in trouble. So you go to court and give you court ordered anger management or court ordered rehab for drunk driving. What is? Think the chances are that somebody's going to really make a change when they go to faira p because the court says they have to and no other reason how about zero whatever money they spend on these court orders programs. They might as well put him in a paper shredder take that money. Put it in a paper shredder bag it up and sell it for confetti, at least they would get some money out of it because it's absolutely worthless. Those people are going because they are compelled to go and absolutely no change is going to take place stage of readiness. Number two is when you're making a change because somebody else wants you to, you know, really want to but your wife or your husband, or your parents, your friends, they want you to do it. So you do it just to please them. You just to get them off your back. You don't really believe it? You don't really want it. But hey, you know, shut him up fine. I'll do it. Again. What's the chance of meaningful change slightly more than making confetti, but not much? Much readiness for change stage. Number three is when you intellectually know that you need to do it. You don't feel it. But at least in your mind, you know, hey, this is not smart smoking kills you. I know that I need to stop in my mind. I know at at don't feel it. I wanna keep smoking. I wanna keep drinking. I wanna keep doing whatever I'm doing. But at least in my mind, I know, it's not smart. I'm not really emotionally there. But at least I'm smart enough to know that what I'm doing is not not right that sometimes intellect will take over and you'll white-knuckle empower yourself through. So there's some chance for change. But real change happens in states number four and stays number four is when mentally and emotionally you are ready for change stage for is when you can look yourself in the mirror and say, I will not take this from myself another. Minute of another hour of another day. I don't care. How scary it is on the other side. I will face that fear instead of take this from myself for another second. I am sick to death of this. I'm gonna throw up if I do this another day. I'm not taking this for myself. I am going to change. That's when you put yourself on project status. That's when you take.

"Detroit, Jack white. White stripes. Great musicians in that town. It's amazing. The kind of music that time puts out from hip hop. Motown pop rock got it all some melting pot of of great music and talented musicians to other museums musicians can't play football. They could play for the lions then. Suck dave. You're right. The lions and the Browns. And they've had some great players. They just haven't had great players at the same time. They ended up quitting because they get sick of losing busily Anders Calvin Johnson. Yeah. When's the last time you shouldn't ask this and not have the answer less than the lions went to the playoffs. They went to couple years ago lost to Green Bay. But the last time they won a playoff game. You gotta go back decades. So they they went and lost a Dallas a couple of years ago. Didn't they they've gone and lost a couple of times? They've only won one playoff game since the nineties. Yeah. We're going back to the fifties. When they won the NFL championship. Yeah. A couple of two three years in a row and they've won one playoff game. Since then one good Lord. They beat the Cowboys. It was that C'mon. Emmett Smith team. They lost in the playoffs in that second season or third season and four season. They on the supervisor. No they played him since then. Right. And then that was what the bad call Dez Bryant. Tony Romo beat him. And the ran the saints beat him one night in a shoot-out breathing Stafford how to the lions and the Cowboys played in Dallas and Dallas one that one. Yeah. And in the nineties, Rodney Peete and Barry Sanders beat that was their only win with Rodney Peete and Barry Sanders. Speaking of musicians and Detroit Lions, you probably know this Dave two of my favorite players when I was a kid growing up Mel far inland. Barney ended up recording one of the most iconic R&_B songs in the history of music. They did what's going on with Marvin Gaye, and I think that was about sixty eight or so in those two guys did the backup vocals which song. Now. What's going on? Marvin Gaye as one of the most iconic records ever did when you listen to the backup the guys that are talking. I don't know if you could pull that up real quick dragon. You weren't listening Marvin Gaye what's going on. If you listen to the beginning of the song, and you hear it's like a background of a party scene. It's Marvin Gaye and Mel far in Lombardy go. Hey, what's going on, man? Hey, there's a party in the back of thing is. Yeah. They'd sing backup vocals.

It'd be like why did he play for our team anymore? Jason witness going to be part of the two thousand nineteen class for the Texas sports hall of fame miss that guy. Also, a member of that sports hall of fame this year. The introductory ceremony will be in Waco is former Texans receiver Andre Johnson. So I like there was a time where he was just top notch. Yeah. He was one of my favorite receivers and it stunk. And that's that's weird. Who's one of my other favorite receivers right now? Deandra Humpty Andre Hopkins to the Texans to the Texans. Best receivers ever have been some of my favorite receivers ever. Do is so good. I'm looking forward to that for him so him and Jason Witten together again. Yes. For the first time. Okay. Here's a confusing stat for me. I can't really figure out how this is. If y'all have any theories, I would certainly welcome them. The NFL is touting a twenty nine percent decrease in concussions this season over last season. Sounds good. It does. There were one hundred thirty five in the regular season total that averages out to about eight per week. So in the preseason there were seventy nine concussions. Which averages out to about twenty per week. How how in the world is free season football can Cussing players at a two and a half times higher rate. All right. I'm going to say. Say are a bunch of players that are trying to get earned jobs. And so they're hitting harder running fat during the regular season. They're not as capable. No. That's not it. Maybe they were trying they were just a new helmets and then during the regular season. Some people said I want to try that helmet because I've heard from so and so that it actually helps that's the only logical answer. I can come up with the other thing that I could suggest is that there are bunch of players in the preseason that don't have big time contracts and the regular season. There are a bunch of players that have big time contracts and need to get that money. And therefore, we're not going to report that they just got hit so hard. They don't know where they are. So you think it could be an under reporting issue more than? Wow. Okay. That's that's a viable theory. And finally a couple of Cowboys notes for you Amari Cooper. We should all be glad to know said his goal is to be the best. Receiver in the NFL now compare that to what Emmett Smith said today in Orlando. There are no new triplets. You've got to build up to the triplets. You can't just annoy somebody the triplets. Just because you got a wide receiver running back at a quarterback performance dictates whether or not you're triplet, and I agree with that a hundred percent. Yeah. But Jerry is gonna try and sell the triplets. Every time he gets. He loves sullen. Nostalgia for this whole franchise is built on. Yeah. And so he's totally fine with that. Oh, I think we got the new triplets. He wants to do that. But you're right then. And I think that's what he's trying to suggest you guys want to go in it. And I hope they do man. I really hope this group does who Amari. Yeah. Go win baby. But those triplets benefited from great offensive line play. Great defense as good as they were because they got the shine. But the rest of those guys did the work. You're absolutely right. Where the KFC masterpiece on one five three the fan coming up. Ax is there collusion in major league baseball? "We talk about our favorite things to fix really soon. One of them got going last night. And I have to say it is deplorable what the Pro Bowl did last night during the skill challenges. First and last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. It is downright despicable. What I had to watch last night because I love the Pro Bowl skills challenge. And I know really it's a great derivative of the NBA all star game that I think is always done a really good job. With the skills contests. They're the NBA announced their all star game starters for each conference. Lebron James captain of the west as the leading vote getter Yana onto Kubo the captain of eastern squad as the leading vote getter for there. I was happy James Harden's starter over Derrick rose because I don't know how that was even in question, but it's two thousand nineteen I shouldn't be surprised by much anymore. But the one thing the NBA all star game has done really. Well is the three point contest the skills challenges much as we try and fix the dunk contest. All the time. I think the rest of that weekend operates. Really well because it puts you in competitive situations that are a little outside the norm. We're doing that better. In the Pro Bowl the skills challenge. I think has come a long way and making it fun and creating a competitive environment for these guys. And that's what we want to see. But there's one big problem. There's one big problem with that. You cannot make Kyle Williams push that sled that far for anyone watching last night. They had an obstacle course as they often do to finish off the competition and the first leg of it involved a sled push. You have the captain of each team Emmett Smith was the captain of one of the NFC team. Jim Kelly was the captain of the AFC team. So Kyle Williams the longtime Buffalo Bills defensive tackle new more neck than he's got anything else on his body is tasked with pushing a sled with Jim Kellyanne already precious cargo like Jim is fought through so much as Kyle Williams said he goes, I had a pretty good career in buffalo. I think if I kill Jim Kelly. I'm not going to be welcome back out there. So already precious cargo on board. And he gets up there. And he's pushing up the guard. This'll be good. They'll do it for ten fifteen yards. They made him push a damn near forty yards. Kyle Williams is exhausted. He looks miserable. He's retiring this year. So this could be the last football game he plays. And that's how you want to do them. It's despicable. So we're going to fix that. We got a couple of other solutions couple of other tweaks that are really going to take Pro Bowl. We can to the next level. We're gonna make it something special despite all the criticisms of this modern game person last here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app right now. It's time for.

"By the way, for those who do not know outside of Chicago. Maybe Akeem Hicks comedy is going to bring the funding. I hope they might come up for everyone of these got. Well, that's one thing to you know, I hope that all of it is Mike up because I think some of the best parts of this is listening to these guys who were just in a moment of having fun. Just listening to have a good time and sort of trash each other in the process is one of my favorite parts of it. Well, and they've got some captains that presumably might be miked up to talk either smack about the opposition or their own players. AFC team is Jim Kelly recently declared totally cancer free, which we love and DeMarcus ware, and then NFC team Emmett Smith, and Brian Urlacher or lacquer with hair going to be all sorts. That's creepy. Uncle. Sort of it is a little bit. Like that. Do you have one side or the other? I mean, a saquon also on the Pro Bowl side for the NFC. Russell Wilson Cameron, Jordan. I mean, big big Nalen. Yeah. George kettle. I, you know, I'm gonna go NFC, of course, with my boys Akeem and Mitch are on it. But AFC's got a pretty good roster. Just picturing Sean thrown to ju is giving me a nice Juniper's, right? Juice. It's spectacular. I'm in for all of it mostly because I think and frankly, this is what I believe should replace the Pro Bowl is a game. I think we should see more, right? This like we all know that the game itself is I say this every year, it's interesting. But let's remember a lot of you guys are gonna watch it. So why does the Pro Bowl rankings than other T other sports, real playoff games? Bright so much people like football knowing that people will watch it just because there's something there's fine. But if you can give me American gladiator type moments where I can watch not leads do things that they don't typically do. That's what's interesting about it to me. So seeing people that are already, you know, amongst the most skilled in the world the best athletes in the world seeing them go out and have to do things that are slightly different than normal. I'm in for all of that. Yeah. You know, the only thing I'll say is that there's some other good pro bowlers that are not in this skill challenge that I would like to see I understand some of them were recently playing or maybe it's more fun to have some younger guys. But you know, Patrick. Mahomes in any of these would have been awesome right with love to see that Antonio Brown. You know, I think they probably tried to bring up some new names, some fresh names, he would be fun to watch in the one where you've gotta make crazy different kinds of catches. My boy to re Cohen is not in this. And he's first of all again, Mike him up hilarious. But I mean, if you've ever watched a Rico, and you know, that he is just an athlete. He's he have you seen the video of him where he does a back flip and catches to football's same time. Like that guy would be fun in any of these challenges Philip rivers because he would be so frustrated just Dak nam it Doug gun it that will be good. So there's a lot of other pro bowlers, you know, that you'd like to see doing their thing. Well, and I'll go back to when I was a kid. They used to put the quarterback challenge up in the middle of the summer, and they obviously filmed it because it was in Hawaii they filmed it during the Pro Bowl, but they played it in the middle of the summer to sort of wet. Everybody's appetite for football. So you'd wait all summer. And then all of a sudden, you would finally get like, Dan Marino. And you know. Bob, boomer like science and all those guys like that era of quarterback. They were all doing these challenges against each other. I was into every single second of it..

"A you know, we're talking about guy athletes who ended their careers on other teams some other ones that that I had forgotten about. I never knew this. I mean, I think I did know it, but I'd forgotten it do you remember Emmett Smith running for the Arizona Cardinals. Yeah. He ended his career theory. You know, Joe Montana had some success with the with the chief sure actually took him to the playoffs and pretty sure. But it it just seems weird ladainian Tomlinson with the jets. Nope. Yeah. You don't remember that? No. You don't remember that stuff? Yeah. It'll always be a charger to me. And it's weird. I what's what's the Sodano deal? So yesterday Sodano and I were in here doing purgatory. Yes. And I hate to say this. I really do you're going to say something nice about Saddana. I started to kind of like him. Oh, wow. That's a turn key signed, Shannon, Zee will not be happy with you. Yeah. I'm very big morning show that I very territorial. I'm a big morning show guy. But you know, Sodano, and I got to goofing around and it actually turned into fun. Yeah. I've always liked which is rare. You've always been on an island with that one. Yeah. No, no. I think other people live on that island. L Z z live on that island. Right. They traded him. They traded him. Beg a chip Travis. Rodgers and a grape soda. No, I've I've started like Sodano. So he's coming up. Yeah. He's a at the top of the hour. We will do purgatory. Yes. All right. So a big story the day. Well, one of the big stories, and we should circle back around to this is that the Lakers got absolutely wacked last night in Denver. John Paul losing by thirty two absolutely wacked. Yeah. It was in my book. It was the worst loss of the season. And the the number that jumps out five of thirty five from three who live by the three die by the threat saloon. Now. Let me ask you this. Yep. If you're not making them, and they started over twelve should you stop shooting them. Maybe they could have been five of fifteen instead of. Fi five shooting them. That is the game. That is where the game is five thirty five. You're never going to win. But you make twelve of them and you're within ten points. Yeah. I mean, like the nuggets shut twenty-five threes, and they were nine of twenty five. That's thirty eight percent. Completely respectable. Yeah. The Lakers may be dialed back some of those shots. It would have helped. Although the nuggets, you know, another thing that jumped out at them offense of rebounding last night. The Lakers seven the nuggets sixteen offense. Rely a lot of extra shots and nuggets took ninety seven shots the Lakers eighties, and they do struggle with these stretch bigs, whether it's which or last night itches Yanni of the ashes, and how many guys are there in the league that are like that. They can detach bigs. Most teams have won the Lakers drafted Wagner. They're hoping. He turns into that is he but turning into it. And she getting only played four minutes last night took one shot missed it. But he hasn't played much. Yeah. Now, I play much at all. You'll have an interesting. They have an interesting interesting player on their south bay Lakers team, even Isaac Banga from Germany. Yeah. Is it Banga who has been if you want if you want to kind of keep your eye on somebody that could turn into something really take a look at Isaac Banga? Yeah. He can play these wing positions. He six nine very good. Yeah. Was great in the preseason. And it's been. Yeah. Shoots threes. Yeah. So maybe depending you know, if any more injuries they've had ankle injuries to Lonzo ball in Josh heart. Maybe we don't notice guys up Clark rolled by a friend of mine is has not been being used as guard. He's been kind of in the Lamar Odom roll like as a slashing create offense kind of guy tonight. They're gonna play him at point at the south bay Lakers. Yeah. In El Segundo disinterest to see how that goes. So that Debbie something to keep an eye under contract. Yeah. He's under under to the south bay Lakers. But the under contract data Lakers. Yeah. He was drafted by the Sixers and the Lakers traded form on draft. Is he like a two way? Does he have a two way contract? Yes. Okay..

"They built the Dallas Cowboys with Emmett Smith and they had Troy Aikman. They had Jay Novacek, Michael Irvin Alvin Harper. They have more weapons, what they everything still started with him. Everything should start in Dallas with Zeke allowance of open throwing lanes on the outside, but we're going to keep harping on it, man, they're wide receivers. They got a Bill to make some place if not, they make football in this era where football is the easiest, throw it. They make it awful complicated with the best runner in football, they, they are going to have to resist the devil on their shoulder in this game because the Texans have an awful past defense. Everyone is having success throwing the ball against the Texans quarterbacks against the Texans this year. Eleven touchdowns to one pick and a one fifteen rating even. In today's era, those are exorbitant numbers, and so you're going to be playing a team that you know has a bad pass defense, no matter the situation. That team is going to be daring you to pass on them. They are going to be stuffing the box. They're going to be loading eight guys in the box. And so you know, they're bad at pass defense, you know, they're leaving their under talented corners on islands, and you still gotta run the football. You still have to prove you have to make the Texans prove they can stop doing that. But man, that's hard. It's and this is what I think was working against the Cowboys the first few weeks of the year and it didn't from afar didn't make sense. How could you only give Zeke sixteen? In average of sixteen carries a game. Why would you not give the ball to your best player? Man? You are taught in all sports, but football in particular, take what the defense gives you. If the defense is dictating, we talk all the time, the patriots being looking. What the defense is saying will allow and taking advantage of that and teams were almost tricking the Cowboys. They're like, hey, we're gonna make it so obvious that you should pass that not passing would be ridiculous and the Cowboys couldn't help themselves and week four they could, and they had far and away their best passing and rushing game of the year. The Texans go and do that. Texans are going to have the everyone. They're going to tie Honey badger down in the box. They're going to be saying, you know what? If you can be our corners. Good luck and the Cowboys have to go into the game saying, we don't even care to beat your corners until you show as you can stop Zeki, Elliott. Yeah. One thing that I would watch out for specis for as the Texans are concerned last week I would say would probably be the best football I've seen between JJ watt in clowney, combined at the same time, JJ watt, five sacks total for the season to last week cloudy. Cloudy also contribute to Saxon and last week's game. So what the Texans try to do as. Make them one dimensional. Try to make them throw the ball in this offense of line has a couple of holes in it. They're gonna have to earn their money because the Texans going to be coming after Dak even though they give up yards and stuff as far as the passing game Cowboys got a score, some points early and Bill to try to keep some type of bounce because you don't want to get in predictable passing situations, the way JJ watt and cloudy rushing a quarterback. We already know that the Cowboys offense is one dimensional. They don't have any other option seemingly. At this point, everyone seems to know that they're going to now go through as equal Elliott. Isn't that like just giving them the answers before Starr's sometimes like correct, but sometimes your guys are just better like win the to use you as an example. I would imagine if you guys were playing in the fourth quarter of a gain down four and it's third and six, everyone knew every they're going to run some basic route to Chris. Option route to Kris told a guy you can't win. I got three choices every choice. You make a bad choice. Everyone knows your.

"I'm sure Matt did to being there and Burlington like he doesn't have an air about him. I, he, he walks into a room and he's gonna in feels like he's giving you his attention. I mean, that's easiest way I can put it in and look, Jerry Jones is the same way by the way. Like when you spend time with Jerry Jones, he's gonna make you feel like he's your buddy. I mean, he's good at that and not everybody is and, and that's not just athletes. It's just, you know, some people have a different personality than others, but Romo. Yeah, charisma is is definitely the word and. Ability is the other word. That's what you know multiple people in the building seen the film, you, let's say, aren't necessarily Cowboys fans, aroma fan. All told me, you know, he, he's extremely like we could many more likable in this film and and he makes it a fun film because he is so so yeah, he's he's a little unique and his level of charisma and like, and it has a little bit of that too. By the way image just I've never seen a more easy going superstar than Emmett Smith, for example. But yeah, Romo is a lot of fun to be around because he is so likable and genuine and relatable. I I in a similar way the way we need. Great. You know, things go your way to answer. I think you have to have that the a superstar about couples didn't have to have some some of that that special juice. You know what I mean? Absolutely. And, and this didn't make the film. It's another one of those that got cut at one point is when we did the hard knocks on the Cowboys and that was the eight season. Again, the longtime PR man, rich down ripple. Leave a meeting with the whole team with this quote about how if you, if you don't like the spotlight and you don't wanna be front and center, you're not gonna make it as Dallas cowboy. And then in the end, he sort of give some clues in that quote, came from Tony Romo. So yeah, you hit the nail on the head like you, you can't. You can't hide when you're the quarterback Dallas Cowboys. It's just you're not gonna succeed. At least that's my opinion on it. And I think Romo would agree with you and and I think probably agrees to since he's the one that pointed out that quote something before I get to Jerry Jones, but there is a town by this very, very interesting. You're, you're your disown to offense. Acid, Acid. but Romo mentioned or hinted at, I don't even want say, hit, never talked about his face. If you times says the good Lord bless them if you different times about -bility to compartmentalize information and specifically talk about his face because how grateful he is that he's incredible life, which I think everybody can agree with Iran member years of them have been around that twenty four season. I remember he did a podcast with a local church which was really interesting in we've, we've gotten to see that side of almo- more. Is that something that team across something that he talked about something you know that you just kinda picked up on? I just think that's another interesting side of. Yeah. No, you you're exactly right? Like he, he, he demonstrated that in his interview few times. And so I did think for to make a conscious effort to sort of help relay that without belaboring it, you know, and you hit the nail on the head. Like he said, he had a God given ability to process information quickly and the near the end of the film, you know, he says something like, you know, I, you know, I don't think, but he basically made a religious reference to gratefully is to, you know, cheating this life that he's been enjoying, you know. And so, yeah, to answer question I did pick up on that in the interview, very, very much so. And was trying to find a way to to to put that in the film a little bit again without belaboring it and going to, or you know, in a religious direction..

"Walter Payton. Yeah, I agree. And and the FBI Emmett Smith people say, well, nobody ran for more. Let me tell you. I the running back I played against most in my career was Emmett Smith one of the toughest runners, I have ever gone against in my life over let me let me ask you another question here. Because a lot of people say was always, look, we get it the great wall. They did a an NFL networks special on the offensive line of the Dallas Cowboys. You don't do specials on offense, and it doesn't exist. How much do you think that was that offensive line, and how much do you think Emmitt Smith being a great runner? Well, again, I think a lot of it is availability. I mean to run the ball and get hit as many times. Here's the thing you can gain yards. But what are you doing? Even if you gain two yards or five yards. What's happening after each run? Yeah. Exactly you're getting hit. So you're still getting hit every time. You carry the ball. And we we know this guy played with a separated shoulder you play with other injuries. A lot of guys have done that. But availability is one of the best abilities out there, and he was able to do that. So yes, it has to go into that help. We always talk about where you know, a lot of people think of Altoona was in the position of of Jerry Rice boon jets. What would have been one of the great ones as well. So you know, you can put that into an in some cases as well. But Emmett Smith man was he he was a tough tough run into bring down. He was and he's done the one thing that nobody has ever done. And I don't think anyone will ever do again eleven straight seasons with at least thousand yard rushing eleven state by the way on either end of that his rookie year he had nine thirty seven and the year after his last season. He got nine seventy five she was like sixty yards away from doing it thirteen straight seasons. Impressive. What he did? Impressive. What Frank gore is still doing oppressor would Adrian Peterson is still doing no doubt about it. It's also impressive. What our next? Guess has done at his university and building TCU in a consistent winner in football. So we're delighted to be joined now on the shell Pennzoil performance line by TCU head coach Gary Patterson is brought to you by Goodyear when you put in the hours the reps in the heart nothing can keep you from being blimp worthy. Goodyear. More driven a coach thanks for being with us this morning, a huge showdown for you guys as you welcome. In on a pseudo home game for you. It's it's not on campus. But it's at AT and T stadium as TCU plays, Ohio State. What does this game mean for you guys this week? Well, I use a third game. You know every year you're trying to you know, the old smcgaels goals win a championship and more importantly get into a playoff. That's why you know, you schedule a house states. Did you have a game that you can win it? Elevate you in the computer rankings, and all the other things that go into it opportunity to be those last four teams. So, you know, this is this is why we're here where we're at. And we're excited about it. You know, we always talk about Coccia the different one of the differences a collagen pros those preseason games in college. You don't get it. So this is your third game though. So where where do you put this team right now a couple of wins against southern SMU before you take on Ohio State? So where where do you evaluate this team now? Well, you know, I think number one we were a little bit beat up. I think we're a little bit behind going into the season. But I think these guys are caught up with we both played better on both sides of the ball in the game. And then what we did in the southern James starting off you get one dollars school. So you really didn't see much, but you know, these guys have been in big games before a lot of these guys. They're excited about I think it's one of those things that you watch him film that will house stage playing very well. Right. Now, have some talented guys. But not she's been in this position thousand times where you're the underdog. And and you do the things you need to do. And that's kind of where we've got got him where we want him. You got him in Texas. That's for sure TCU head coach Gary Patterson with us and for those that may not know this matchup between TCU and state has interesting origins in twenty ten TCU with Gary Patterson as you head coaching. Andy Dalton as their quarterback went through an undefeated season went to the Rose Bowl that year and Gordon G then the president of Ohio State University was said something saying, basically, quote, I do know having been both the southeastern conference president at a big ten president that it's like the murderers row every week for these schools key declared we do not play little sisters of the poor. We play very fine schools on any given day referring to the schedule that you Gary and your team may have played that year in twenty ten and really it was from that remark that sort of got this matchup going. Did it not? Well. Yeah. Everybody. Has an opinion. You know, I think I started in fifth place for my wife. So, you know, we've always. If you listen to everything everybody had to say, you know, you might as well, just stay in your home and locked the door and turn off the lights 'cause you don't have a chance. So, you know, all you can do is get up in the morning, go prove people wrong. And then, you know, the twenty one years we've been achieved that's what we've been trying to do, and you know, win or lose. I think we've already we've elevated ourselves to bear. We wanna be with one forty games allows four years in the big twelve and and we we've got to go try to win one more like that they have a great season. So you know, that's our kids are excited about it. And thinking about it for a while. And here we go. I mean, none of those kids on that team are going to be on this team. But will you bring this up is a little pep talk before the game begins. Oh, no. I don't I don't. I don't need to bring up, you know. The bottom line is to it. As you're supposed to be up to the games. You're supposed to win the big games take care of themselves. I think everybody knows on our team that they're playing allows state and how can a football team that they are. And and you know, we always try to match our level of of ability with the next team that we always play. And so you know, when I was true we played in the championship game against Oklahoma. They had a really good football team. We came up short. And so we're trying to get back to that position again. So Ohio states next person in line, and you know, there there are going to be a hard challenge because I think they're playing very well. I think that goes to said today think this one maybe one of their best Ohio State teams. And so we're gonna we're gonna put her abilities up against them and see how we how we show talking to Gary Patterson TCU head coach two-time AP coach of the year. And that's that's I think, and I guess that's why I'm gonna ask the frustration for you. Your guys is a top programme. I mean, you proven that for a number of years yet at times. Doesn't feel like you guys are perceived that way is that frustrating to you. Well, yeah. But you look at it. I think there's a the last three hours four years to five teams that have been the only five teams have ended up the top ten rankings and you're talking about Ohio State, Alabama. Gee, shoes one of those groups Oklahoma. So when you know that you're one of those Clemson, if you know, you're one of those teams that you've done that then bottom line is somebody somebody's paying attention. But you know, over over the years. You've gotta find out that you have to do it. That's why we've just we've just kept her head down and keep proving people wrong. I think that's. Always been our motto of being able to do that. And the people that play as coach profession they understand how hard we play how we do things. And you know, I don't think we've ever as I told somebody media day, and they said about well we made to storm three-star guys be better players. I said I only told him that's what that was their their wrenching. We've always felt like the jury uses the Andy Dalton. Stat out the other day that are all we've got the most tall climbing altitude tacos, and the NFL was six nine total. And so, you know, everybody says we're even a defense group put you don't hear you're talking about the kind of offense and that we have. So it's you know, it's like anything. You're always out to get up and and make yourself better and get people to pay attention every day. There's only one way that you can pay. The rent is is to do it every day. Not just think that once you do at one time not going to get it done another. So. That hasn't changed that that attitude about how we approach things is going to be always the same. And and it gives us an opportunity every week to win. So let's look at the game the opportunity to win this week number four Ohio State playing number fifteen TCU. Let's look at that game from your team's perspective. What what are the things that? You can't afford to do and on the negative side and Ken on the positive side to make sure you lead this this game with a win. Well. Longliners is you can't you gotta start fast. If you look in the first three ball games stage play they've had people down by twenty eight points by the second quarter. And so you gotta start faster. You know, we can't have an hour mobile type situation where you're trying to come back in both games where you're trying to come back in twenty points. Plus. So you know, we've got to start fast. You got to be able to move the football score some points, and defensely, obviously, you got to handle the physical noticeable house state. And I think one of the things that makes them a lot better on offense is a really throwing the ball better with this football team with house can so we've got to be able to come out. You got to be able to try to get takeaways, which is one of the ways you can slow people down because I think the third down percentage is like seventy three percent right now. How do you do that? And so, but you know, I kind of look at it the same way I looked at playing a Wisconsin the Rosebowl I think they were averaging like seventy points a game the last six games of the season in the big ten when we played them in the Rose Bowl. And so I think you gotta get ready. And and understand that. That's why you play the games in any given day. Anybody can be anybody. So how do you do that? Gary Patterson with this TCU head coach. Yes. Seventy three percent completion our conversion on third down that would be a really bad stat for opposing defenses. So absolutely that one needs to get changed around. And we talked a little bit about how this thing got started Gary with that the little sisters of the poor comment. But this is the first time how Satan TCU have played since one thousand nine hundred seventy three. How do you? How do you deal with someone an opponent like that that you really don't see a lot of well number one? We're highly respect on the football side. Call coach Myers has done a great job there. Great show. You know, you have a coach day all of those guys they've got two or three or four coaches that could be head coaches on their style. And so you understand the kind of abilities their players have and doing doing the things that they do. And so I think I talk to you ever respect actor, and the other part is that I really respect Ohio State fan base there. You know, they're passionate about what they do. They've been doing a long time. I think they they are one of those groups that you that you liked to watch because they they load their team. And anytime you play anybody like we played LSU here in AT and T stadium before a couple of years back anytime you play one of those kind of fan bases. You have to you'd have to embrace the moment. Because that's it's what college football is all about. That's why you're playing the game. I just it's one of those things you respect your opponent. But you don't you don't fear your opponent. And you get ready to go. And and that's what that's what makes us a big ball game. That's why it's a seven o'clock game. That's why you have the eight team ESPN doing it. And and that's that's what you like. To play the game. Everybody wants to get your point. That's what young kids wanna do. They want to get to a point where they play and one of these kinds of games. And so you have to you have to give them the opportunity to be able to do that. And so it's even for coaches coaches love getting ready for big Bella games to which it's it's what makes it fun all the work all the work..

"You need to know when you need it to Kevin McCullough. I've always wondered how much fun. It would be to be one of those little guys could get behind one of those great big guys in the NFL and run around people and that no one did it better than ladainian Tomlinson. Although he's number five on the all-time rushing chart ladainian is with us. And he's talking about his new movie, God bless the broken road. And I was looking at that ladainian. I was thinking the idea that you've played all those eleven years. That's a lot of pounding on your knees and your body and your preparation for every game and so forth and you finished at fifth in NFL history. How much does that make you then further appreciate Walter Payton, Emmett Smith, some of the people that went even further than you. I mean understanding the physicality in the physical toll it took to get to the spot on the list. Were you got? Well, those those inspired me to to do what I did you mentioned two favorite. Of all time. Walter Payton was the reason I wanted to play football and be a running back, right? In the state of Texas. I was a huge cowboy fan. Mcconnell man to you know, and just kind of ran with it. I looked up to him and and really early in my career. I would call him a lot in the. Vice asking me absolutely asked two questions what I needed to do to have the longevity that he had. And he sure many things with me. And so they inspire me. But you know, honestly, Kevin. I only wanted to play ten years. I was never got that strive to play fifteen sixteen years. Like, of course, I did. And you know, Walter was up there as well. But my my mom was eleven years was was long enough for me. It was it was a great run. Sure. And I appreciate you know, having to go through the grind journey. You know, it, obviously, I think made me a better person. But also just a better, man. And and understanding the challenges that we all face, but you can overcome. I've talked to a lot of NFL players over the years, and I've talked to a lot of professional athletes from different disciplines. And I don't think any of them ever talk about physical preparation for a game being a bigger deal than the NFL guys. I mean, just the pounding that you put your body's through weekend and week out. It takes a toll. And so I wasn't surprised when like Tony Romo decided to retire. I mean, he'd been through a couple of really severe injuries, and you know. The Peyton Manning. Same thing you want you one bad hit away from something really tragic. And I think those of you that survive and thrive in an excel to the very highest level, you give some real inspiration to people around you. So good job on that. Let's talk about the movie. Why did you do this film? What was it about it that attracted you to it? Well, so. Thinking about doing movies at all, you know. It would just wasn't something that was on my radar call from a friend of mine who was an executive producer on this fan. And you know, kind of happened out the blue I hadn't talked to him in quite some time. And then called me up one day and said, hey, we're casting for them. And we're looking for a pastor. And he said I thought of you before you tell me to go school all just hear me out. And he told me about. You know, what their plans for this team? We're gonna be. Parts of the proceeds will benefit DA be able to marry him bid which would be the first time in the history of Hollywood that that has ever happened. They call Martijn because of all the things that I've done in the community and the work that I've done with with our military and. Berries being I'm into from a community standpoint. That was the first team. But then when he's sending me scream, and I read through it. You know, I really could relate to the pastor role my old bringing in just kind of. You know, all the things that I had been through and being in a small grown up in town. This small church reminded me of my own church growing up. So I just it was something that I just felt like overwhelmingly that God would say you need to do this and came about what was it like making the movie for you how different than the world of professional sports. Yeah. You know to be honest with you, Kevin. It wasn't it wasn't terribly hard in terms of, you know, remembering the lines, and and all those kinds of things because player in an preparing for games every week into playbook that prepared me for you know, the lines and remembering the line speaking the lines and being in front of the camera and all those things. The hardest thing, you know, you're telling the story, and you know, you have other interactions in different scenes with actors and actresses that you got to continue to tell their story. And you know, that's the toughest thing is interacting with other. Actors and actresses. Gene and trying to tell the story. But also, I think just being able to take coaching for my director. He had he had a vision of the film and the way he wanted to come out. You have to be be willing to a John conham understand his..

"But he wasn't it wasn't like he carried it if they if they had a bad quarterback they wouldn't have gone anywhere if if you know brian hoyer was playing quarterback for the cowboys with emmett smith they winning a super bowl look at look at what happened last year when zeke went down how bad were the cowboys they were they were a game over five hundred women and five hundred without and the year before when he's healthy the entire season deck looked like a hall of famer and they were the number one seed in the nfc yeah but the bottom line is they weren't any record wise they were not really any worse without him last year but i last year without him versus with him but as in general as a team they were much worse team last year when zeke miss time and had all the distraction they scored less points i'll give you that but their record was didn't affect them in the win loss record really the cowboys the cowboys finished a game over five hundred without technically two games over but i don't count the last game because they didn't play any other guys in that last game of the season when they beat philadelphia phillies wasn't playing in their starters if you take out that game they were one game over five hundred without with him and five hundred without him and leonard fournette last year the jaguars played in the afc championship game with blake bone goes all about the defense for net wasn't even the best running back in the draft last year or at least for as as a rookie he kamara kareem hunt drafted later were better than he was much better if gettleman thinks that barclays going to be the best player in this draft which a lot people had concerns about the quarterbacks people talked about quarterbacks going one two three four yeah alouette lower than that rosen went lower than at four in the top ten for the first time ever but the bottom line is if you if you're if you had saquon barkley as you best prospect and you add sam darnold or josh rosen josh allen is fourth or fifth or sixth best prospect then you screwed up if you're gettleman because when are you going to get that chance to get now if you if.
