Entertainment Companies Express Solidarity With Black Lives Matter
"Log into your Netflix account and you will see a new category this week the black lives matter collection Amazon prime and HBO are also featuring black TV and film making at the same time HBO Max has pulled from its library the classic film gone with the wind until it can give audiences context on the movie on how it romanticizes slavery in the south during the civil war now all these entertainment companies and plenty more have expressed solidarity with black lives matter and they're highlighting a lot of good shows also some not so good shows for some guidance I want to bring in NPR's pop culture critic Linda Holmes Highlander hi and our TV critic Eric deggans Herrick Hey let's start with one movie that had shot to a lot of people's viewing here is it just the help from twenty eleven and then came this huge backlash Linda I'm gonna throw this to you first because I know you just wrote a column about the movie and and some of the problematic elements that prompted this backlash yeah the help is a film about black maids in Mississippi in nineteen sixty three but it sees their story very much through the eyes and the experiences of a young white woman played by Emma stone who decides to write a book about them and it's very much about her as the person who saves them and help them out that's a classic Hollywood trope of the white savior and you know file a Davis who plays able in one of the maids has talked about this herself and said she regrets doing the film because of that focus on the white character rather than on the maids huh to the point about problematic elements of of some of the show's Erica each item will be honest and say I grew up watching and loving gone with the wind I imagine there are a lot of people out there thinking of a TV show or film that they have loved and thinking there's actually some pretty problematic characters and storylines and there it is a critic how do you think about this one of the things I always recommend is paying attention to how characters of color are treated by the story line are they fully realized characters with their own goals with their own values or are they constantly sacrificing themselves in order to aid a white protagonist I think that Linda makes a great point in her column where she talks about how the black maids and they help are constantly risking their jobs and their lives to help this white protagonists who just wants to like write a book about them and and and the question is always you know what are black characters are characters of color are doing for themselves do they seem like a collection of stereotypes or do they seem like authentic people who may have flaws are they like there to move the story along what do they really have agency and finally with gone with the wind you know what idolizes the antebellum south and it idolizes the south that was enslaving black people you know what what is the story ultimately saying is good and what is it saying that's negative and does that really line up with your values as if you were you have to constantly ask yourself these things Linda to Eric's point about that we should be aware as we watch black characters on screen are they authentic characters are they fully realized characters what are some things you would recommend viewers look for well I what I want to say first that I think if you're a white person like I am who who is trying to kind of do better and understand better what you watch is always going to be just a compliment to whatever real work you're doing watching a movie is not enough of course and that's why in a lot of ways what I recommend to people and I hope people do it's just change persistently consistently durably change the mix of creative voices that you are listening to and that you are giving your eyeballs too and not only when they are specifically addressing race so you know watch makayla Cole's new HBO show which is called I may destroy you if you're looking for something that's new if you want to go a little older and a little more mellow one of my favorite romances as the two thousand found love in basketball it matters a lot just what you're putting into your own eyes as far as representations of people I think it can be really hard to undo repeated exposures to something with conscious explanations of it I I I would push back against one element of that and say that I do think that one reason why people may have felt more comfortable voting for a black man to be president is because we saw a black man as president on both the hit TV show twenty four and the popular movie deep impact and so I do think that what we allow characters of color to do in film and TV shows expands our idea of what we may accept people of color doing in real life Linda give us a recommendation or to Eric did you want to weigh in here what what would do you recommend that people watch if we are trying to

"What's interesting about this is that normally I get a little bit of a chichi on Tania's trending report. And it has like the headline which I do have. I m on engagement ring watch with this Hollywood starlet, and then she has a picture some random, dude, why is this some random guy or is this somebody that has significance? Yes. Oh, so he's the Thirty-three-year-old SNL segment director, and they actually met in two thousand sixteen when Amazon hosted SNL PS, he's from San Diego. So I love him already. But I find this so interesting because they've been dating for like a couple years ish. And yet you couldn't even like, you didn't know who he was. And yet he's dated very private. Yes. So they were spotted together leaving his movie premiere back in June of two thousand seventeen and it wasn't until January twenty nineteen that they were spotted courtside at a clippers game. No PDA, but still super q. And then cut to the Oscars on Sunday. They didn't walk the carpet together. But you did see shops of Emma stone in there. And he was sitting next to her. What I find really interesting about this is that so now we're on engagement ring watch they've been together for this long. His social media presence. He has a social media account, but he's not very active in a post weird Selby's like he has a really solid social media page. How somebody like this Emma stone, we an she's mega mega famous and yet we know nothing about her personal life. And yeah, I can tell you what Nick Jonas and Priyanka Jonas that's by choice. But that's ain't put it out there. But what why why so private some people like to live a private personal at other people like putting it out there? I mean, this is the beat of their own drum, but no big mystery there, but when you were up some people private people, some people are introverts extroverts, Nick. I mean, it seems like the Jonas's are extroverts the Jonas brothers. So interesting though, that they Bill really I actually find it. Not that interesting. Don't take it. Personally. It's just that date day are two types of people those who wanna take a selfie and those who don't keep it in private and he's a little bit more because he'd like directions of Mike more behind. Do you think that it's good that he's in the scene of hers, but not in it? I like that. He's what is he doing a segment designer or what have you segment producer? Segment director for SNL. And here comes Emma stone to host in two thousand sixteen or whatever, that's so cute. I'm way into this. All right. Well, you're on the watch. So you'll keep us posted right now. We'll know a lot more about him in the next thirty minutes of nonstop kiss.

I think the headline was something like secret or like this relationship that she's kept on the download she actually revealed for the first time, blah, blah, blah, something like that. Right. Yes. Something like that. Okay. Filling the blank on that one. All right. So Emma stone over the past three years Emma has gone out with a handful of guys all of which have cheated on her from day one or Emma was actually the other woman and had no idea. And because of that Emma stone doesn't trust any men, although she is giving her latest relationship a shot because she did debut him out in public as her date at the sag wards last saw people be jerks, people be jerks for sure, and I will say, no, man. Okay. Well, you can say that I will say that this is slightly unrelated. But at the beginning of the telecast, Megan Mullaly had the best. Offered to fuck. Thanks or threaten to fuck which is fun subcategory. Correct me or pitching alternative joke to joke that I've made. So none of those are welcome. That's the theme for me of my year is if you have you respond to me. I will ignore or block. Implore an invite more women to do the same. It feels great. But also in real life too. New allegations emerge against former CBS CEO Les Moonves
"KCRW sponsors include FOX searchlight pictures, presenting the favourite a story of loyalty power and deception from director your ghost length Imos, starring Livia Coleman, Emma stone. Rachel vice and nNcholas Holt now playing in select theaters, I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt felony of the Hollywood reporter. And Matt Hollywood is just stunned by this article that ran in the New York Times yesterday that described the final days of les Moonves says as the head of CBS this much mired suave seemingly very sophisticated executive at one of the most powerful executives in the business. And this article describes this frantic effort that he engaged in to cover up an alleged sexual assault than and again this. These all seem to have been some years ago at some point he seems to have gotten a grip and stopped this pattern of allegedly assaulting women serially, but this one particular case a manager knew about it this kind of. I know someone who knows him who referred to him as a sort of a Broadway, Danny rose character. And this manager took advantage of this knowledge and pressured les Moonves who frantically tried to cover up what he knew would be a completely career ending story. If it were to be exposed, right? And it was a series of attempted payoffs move as was attempting to foist this woman onto a CBS show and get her paid. So her manager could get paid. So the manager would tell this actress to not come forward against les Moonves, and it just descended into this series of text messages back and forth and meetings at delis and a really desperate attempt by one of the most powerful men in Hollywood to keep this a secret. Yeah. And this is what ultimately the board finally hit a point where they could not deal with it. He had such support on his board. And you know, this is a chronic problem. I think in this industry and others the boards. Just rub. Or stamp a powerful executive, and that's gone on for a long time. But at this point if despite the deep support he had on the board one of the board members in particular was like I can't deal with it anymore, and it became a career ender, and it's striking that they had already done this internal investigation with which shows you the value of internal investigations which exonerated him. And basically, and you know, these internal investigations I think we should say are just kind of joke. The thing that ended up being keys when they looked into this later, they realized that what he had done was used his position at CBS to cover up an alleged abuse claim from an actress and once that was established he was gone now. The question is how much of this severance payment that he is allegedly negotiating right now, which could be as much as one hundred twenty million dollars. How much if anything is he gonna get and I will speculate that that number will be zero because I think it is clear that the story kills any chance. "I mean, maybe the sparseness of it looks better on the big screen, but like it is something that doesn't lose that feeling. And I do think you're going to lose that feeling in Roma and the other side of the wind in the you're going to watch my movie from fucking couch, like can't get those potato chips off your shirt. Give them to me. Something that is getting theatrically released. The end of November that we think will differ. We will differ on this. It's the new one from Greek director yoga's length amounts. It's the favorite with Libya Coleman. Emma stone and Rachel vice smother Mark Gaddis is in it kid from Billy Lynn's long halftime walk. Oh yes, that dude. And then nNcholas halt? Yes. Which was weird in that movie seeing him in Rachel vice because he's the boy in about a boy. That's Ryan. She's about that the the mom or the lady friend or Hugh Grant lady. I don't remember that. I think Hugh grant's lady. I only she's the mother or maybe I'm completely wrong about that. Now it's been a while, so that was weird. I was like, you were like a kid with her in a movie once and now you're like. That's not seducing her anything is weird sitting nNcholas hold grow up like that between that and like the weird role in the weatherman, the weatherman with nNcholas cage. I remember that move. We're like Gil bellows. It's his son and Gil bellows as a weird relationship with them at remember that at all. It's really something I only saw that movie because they use the fuck in Iggy pop song trailer hooked me. I mean, it's been ski. I'll check out ver- Bensky every time I'm not particularly fond of all of them. You see that like SCI fi movie. He had a super long thing last year that nobody saw Valerian. Yeah. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's like a sort of horror movie. Oh, cure for wellness? Yes. That is trash. Very, very nice looking, but trash trash is e. So the favorite yoga's lent the most. So he's the doodoo did dog Alps the lobster killing of sacred year. This is his by far his biggest move. It will also I think we would also agree on this that it's and we won't talk about spoilers year. These movies are now his most accessible film for a more general audience. Probably that that seems correct. I mean, killing of a secret dear was pretty vicious. It's still, I mean it was a big cast, but it was still in his vein of like, holy shit. This is mean violent weird, move like this. It feels weird because that felt like more of a throwback to his dog tooth days. Whereas both this feels much more like the lobster and that it's more about mean-spiritedness and cynicism. Yeah, than it is in cruelty. Of course. Emotion. I, it's not about violence so much. Absolutely. But you know, there are there are tastes of it everywhere, and so it's Libya Coleman is playing Queen and and and and and Rachel vice and Emma stone, our cousins who are like vying for her attention, you know, both romantically and politically and social inevitable who will indeed to become the favorite watch and find out. But you and I split on this giving any spoilers. Can you say what didn't work for you in the movie? I felt like he kind of had one idea and like I have nothing against like this is specifically like the worst yoga's Lampe most movie. I'm still probably going to enjoy watching. Right because I like the actors. He gets like the way he shoots his films. I'm this, I thought was maybe his worst edited movie. There were a lot of shots words like you could have let that play out, and I would have I like I felt like he cut the spell. Too often, but I guess, yeah, my my feeling was like, oh, so the point is rich. People are bad. Okay. I don't know. Dude, I think some people around here still that reminder apparently war. But that's, that's like the big. FOX searchlight awards grabbing film for the fall stones in it. So it's the worst. I mean, it's going to it's going to happen. Yeah, and I think the three of them are are quite good in there. I mean, alluvial Coleman is just she's, she's the best. She was my favorite. Yes. My favorite is. I mean, even from peepshow leg, I've just, oh, I've always loved her..

"And when you see him, do these serious roles, you're like, wow, man. Not only did you exceed my expectations. You kinda almost blew my mind with one word. The story goes, but the performances from Jona hill and Emma stone to Emma stone deserves a lot of praising this because the two people and for people who don't know what maniac is all about. It's these people who are in certain points in their lives, and they somehow connect and meet through this pharmaceutical trial to make this drug, or they go through these trials of taking this pill that's supposed to magically cure any trauma that they might have. But of course, that's where the TV show of takes place in dives, deep into. What the world is all about. So Christian all let you go ahead and take it from there. What were your initial thoughts or now that you're done watching maniac? What you think of it automatically? I mean, ultimately, I think it's it's brimming with magic nation ideas. I don't think every single one of those. Necessarily accuse. But I think generally speaking, it's really well directed. It's really it's like anchored by these fantastic performances and shit, and I think it's really difficult whenever you're doing multiple times, you just saw a fantasy thing him with a mullet. You're going to see him with the fucking grill end right now. He has to play four different characters on this show, and he plays them differently. Each one. Emma stone is brilliant and the show, but I will say that I feel like they gave her more to do in the first half of the season and the back half of the season belong to Jona emotionally. You know what I mean? I've Flom do ultimately. I really like it if I had to put a number on it, I would say it's like an eight. I felt some parts of it because it doesn't all coalesced. But it is like so upping dense with ideas and imagination in like, aren't we supposed to be applauding at Westworld? Let's mold has its Buchan faults dude, but how many other shows are swinging for the buck and fences like at and it's not many, so you gotta appreciate what you get at it for sure. And there was something. I also wanted to note too, is that if there is a season two, they said that forgot. We won't come back for it, which I think is fine because I don't know when you want something like this, did you scream what happened with Emma stone and Jonah hill and season two because I don't. I feel like the story neatly wrapped its bow. Again, there's some open ended questions out there, but I'm okay that didn't answer everything on there. And I also wanted to highlight to going back to what you said. The imagination in this is brilliant. You know, in the color schemes that day, do I feel like every episode tells a different story, but overall for the for the narrative of the of the grand story, they always still bring it back. Right? And I thought that was really good. You know how many times have you seen stuff where they show you a side story or they want to emphasize one specific character and then the end to episode in your. Well, okay. I guess that was that one episode catering to the specific character but didn't add anything to overall plot? I thought that's what I want to just highlight and congratulate this show on is that they'll give you a specific episode with mainly Emma stone or mainly Jona hill, and then they still tie it back to this Dante's inferno of inception like levels at both of them have to go to. Right. We're a lot of it is funny at first, but then each level or each episode when they dive deeper into these character. Worlds of like, oh, the fantasy world or the gangster world, right?.

"So that's another will become an incentive file because he can give some stories to. And then one last one in this one's really peculiar seen the trailer a couple of times in the award. Excuse me. I think it's one hundred wear the Heisman winner. Go ahead. Your the favorite by yoga's landed landed the most? Yeah, he's going to be the lobster. I did see he did do the lobster and the killing of sacred deer. So he's, he's got this very short career so far. I like is otherwise, this was this one I don't. I'm not crazy about give the story. Well, it's it's Emma stone and Rachel vice, and they're pitted against each other to gain a favor of the aging. Accenture, Queen Anne played by Livia Coleman. Now, the trailers just make it look bonkers and make it look like Queen Anne is just bat, bleep insane. Right. And it's just. Deteriorating morale of both Emma stone and Rachel vice. So like that's one of those ones where I'm watching the beginning, like what you thought of the phantom thread the first time you saw that trailer like, what could this possibly be about? I'm having the same level of intrigue with the favourite as I was having with the phantom thread last year. Yeah, I'd have to see the trailer because this storyline is that I don't really boring. Yeah, watch the trailer like she's she's bringing in lobsters, have lobster races Queen ants, like she's throwing people out of her carriage. He's this movie. Now the you crazy, and I'm all in looking for it. Then just some final also rans don't really need to go deep into it and Nita battle angel, Robert Rodriguez back doing a big budget action film written by James Cameron. That could be something great at also knowing how Rodriguez careers gone as of late. It could also be a big miss a record, Ralph to fix the internet all in for that one, having the. Haven't had a really from Disney in a while in this case. So let's go with that and also bad times at the El royale writer director drew Goddard who did cabin the woods, which is a personal favorite of mine has this crazy cast, looks crazy. Good casts of Chris Hemsworth Jon Hamm, Dakota, Johnson and Jeff bridges, and it's kind of a just from what I've seen of it. I don't know too much about it. I'm kind of letting myself be very surprised by it, but it looks like one of those these eccentrics are coming in for this pseudo competition, something like that, and just a whole bunch of God knows what happens. But with that cast in which you got her who again, I loved with cabin in the woods. Also did it with Josh Sweden. I believe you co wrote and produced it. I'm all in for for that one. A lot stands agree. I was just just can't get enough of Gary Hart. He might read the book again, has fired up is the front runner December seventh. All right. Now it's time for Robert Townsend great stories. Eddie Murphy's raw and a wonderful career. Yep, you guessed it. I'm a.

Emma stone, Emma. Watson, like enjoy both of them. Watson. You sold out. I was stolen real quick out. Our next story on the old story panel list is really talk today about ant man and the wasp. Now, there was a recent report that said that man and the wasp wasn't that big of a box office success. And if you look at the official number, I think it's a, it's over four hundred million. The official number is four hundred thirty million worldwide. So when you factor in budget marketing, some making that much money, that's that's less than what the first one made. I think the first one got close to five hundred million. So my question for you guys is this is just more of a discussion. It's not unofficial story one. Do you ever think we'll we're going to see another movie and to widen. People want go go and see it. I mean, most people are gonna point the superhero fatigue, but I think there's it hurt it. That was so close to Infinity war. And like you said earlier would help it, like you said earlier with the whole people only see a few movies a year few blockbusters. Maybe they just chose to do. One and not go to the other. I don't know is in that men in the wall, was it really that inspiring to go out and see the movie spend money with your family popcorn tickets soda? I think when you look at the recent marvel movies to what is it been? It's before I am an Infinity war ragnarok, Spiderman, guardians of the galaxy Black Panther. These movies are epochs there's a lot going on. There's multiple characters from within the universe. The only one that's really a solo film outta those Spiderman and spider-man's the biggest superhero character in the world, arguably so in and the wasp, it's a more contained story, but it doesn't really have that much more of an inside. You don't know what we don't know story. You don't know that going in the kind of know that from the previews, you know that it's a man and the wasp, and it's a man's crew is not really characters coming from other movies or crossover. All right. So he doesn't have that epic feel where this is, oh, this is a movie need to go out and see Black Panther. I predominantly black casts in a superhero movie, ninety percent of the cast is African American. It feels like an epic fantasy. Epic go to this world of Akanda pairing it to Thor. Ragnarok. We have the hulk in that you have all these steaks with Helo where the ragnarok the at the end, the Armageddon of Norse mythology or is it a household name to Thors household name? Yeah, guardians of the galaxy. I'm very just one was a fantasy epic, the second one. So a little bit scaled back. But that movie did really well the first time around. I'm really surprised that it didn't do as well that thought it was gonna do do. Do you guys think that most? Not most, but a good chunk in the money comes from people. Rewatching the movies tunes theaters. Oh yeah. Yeah, people aren't going no rewatch factor in an admin. You wait for Blu Ray for that one. Or on demand, Netflix, does he shaming service?.

Joaquin Phoenix to play The Joker in Scorsese produced film
"All right, everyone. Appreciate those. Sorry if you didn't get rid, but we are moving onto segment to now another addition of almost famous wherein we go over actors, famous or not to turn down what could have been roles of a lifetime. We're gonna start out with John Lithgow. He almost played the joker twice apparently in the original, Joe Dante version of the movie that never got made. Joe Dante was gonna make Batman. And then again in Tim Burton's first movie, he was gonna play the joker. I think John Lithgow would have been a great joker man for sure. It's almost like more of a. Classic joker? No. I don't know that it's an odd choice. I wonder how they would have done them up. I wonder if they would have given the the wig and the green hair and everything, or if they would have kind of leaned more on the way he actually looks. That's interesting if it would have been Tim Burton. I think he would have gone with the same. Yeah, same bookie. Yep. Yep. But Jack was great, but I could totally see John Lithgow down with that Emma stone one for LA La Land. But originally that movie was going to be a Watson. "We'll have sabathia i don't entirely agree with okay i don't know the complete breakout slumdog millionaire no one can be this movie rate but i felt some of these films got a very strong response and a passionate response shape of water some people loved darkest dow had a very spotlight vibe for me meeting when i walked out of it i kept hearing people talk about this the way they did spotlight and you know which picture won the oscar that year look emma stone is emerging as one of the great acts as for generation and didn't disappoint there's no question should get a nomination it solely to win a second bosca thought she is going to be in the running by the way to be thoroughly entertained and people will buy that movie is not a bad thing and was also going to be helped by the fact that billiejean king is so much behind the movie which she's obviously who emma stone's playing emma stone is made to look a lot like her she's portraying a very emotionally tough period from billiejean king's life and so to have that as sort of extra win behind the sales is is only get a helped emma stone but let's also talk we've said emma stone we've said gary oldman one movie we haven't yet talked about is bird which i know you liked a lot i liked as well it features somebody who i think is also one of the great actresses of her generation and that is search lerone in who's been she's already a twotime nominee she's 23 i believe and yeah i mean i think she was nominee who choose like 13 for meant then for one of my favorite movies brooklyn two years ago and now she's playing a version of greta girl wig in a movie directed by greta garbo her first solo directorate effort let's give that a little attention.

"I thought it was an excellent right beyond the fact that is simply lovely to see good movies which account for much the year i feel very good films this year the wasn't one that i categorically fell head over heels with like i did moonlight last year other people did with la la land but ivo some terrific films that are going to be very strong entrace battle of the sexes about the famous billie jean king bobby riggs tennis match has yet again the wonderful emma stone and is maybe the most commercial the films that we saw for fox searchlight they had a very different foam from guillermo del toro which i admired assigned by him very much based in some ways on the creature from the black lagoon films called the shape of water and the darkest hour which is a british period peace with gary oldman as a sensational winston churchill will fill of that period peace klay ugly play period play an accent winds you an oscar for hat agree i think those the wants to look how for i was a bit surprised that downsizing really didn't go down great well let's contextual as what that one's about this is the alexander payne drama desire matt damon that had opened the venice film festival just a few days earlier came over got the premier spot in the telluride schedule as the patrons preview and did not go over quite as well at one rave reviews from the trades on the lido here comes the rockies and it just didn't click as much why do you think that was.
