"Have i done it here. perhaps. I don't know but i also think that you know the fact. That theresa has literally written the book on the subject in his also experiencing this sort of decision fatigue. Really points to just how much emotional calculus each and every one of us has had to do in this release trying time and i can barely do math myself so it really is such a hard moment to be a human being to be a person at all no matter who you are about what expertise you carry. It's going to be difficult. It's going to be stressful. And i'm sort of opinion in this case that. Yeah i think you should just move ahead and do it because the situation fluctuates. "We end up where we are now I think what was so gallingly obvious. Was that everyone in the. Us government knew exactly what we're talking about here. They knew they they knew that. The afghan government was predatory. They knew that it was a criminal state. They had a name for it. They called it. They called it vice. Vi which stood for vertically integrated criminal. Enterprise that was the name that the pentagon gave to the afghan government. They knew and and yet the thing did not get fixed. And so what was that. And i i guess ultimately it was a lack of political will. It's it's it seems interesting. Where ironic that one of the major american politicians who earlier We'd get up in meetings of the in the situation room and say we just don't have. We don't have a possibility of victory. Here we should get out is joe biden the person on whom the burden of the withdrawal falls and and you can easily argue. Who's responsible for the titanic. Titanic and tragic Screw up at the execution of that withdrawal but if you look at biden's voice in the arguments in the within the obama administration he's a voice telling obama don't listen to the generals don't have a surge get out and now it lands on him. What what has been biden's role in this epic all along. Well i think you're right. I think biden from the beginning was deeply skeptical of the the united states. Attempting anything ambitious in afghanistan. I think he he did believe the president obama got rolled by the generals intimidated by the generals in two thousand and nine. When when obama did the surge. I think there are there are moments where where binding and i think in this case. He was confronted by by richard holbrooke. The special envoy who said we can't we can't leave in even hurry you you understand that mr vice president back in two thousand ten and vice president biden essentially saying out. Get out. we're leaving. i don't care. I don't care about all the on the ground there. Don't bother me with this. The i don't care is Leave a hideous taste in the mouth of history for a long time to come here we are. You know a lot of people say that you know in the end. This will not hurt. Joe biden politically in places like scranton because people who bear the cost of this war who've always borne the cost of this war are in places like scranton and they're happy not to send their kids there anymore. That's right i that that's that's that's that's true. It's a this war was was fought in the war in iraq was fought by nineteen year olds But but i don't. I don't know i anyone watching on television. What has unfolded over. The past week cannot be pleased with the way it was done even if they believed strongly that we needed to leave. And i think that that's gonna stick the the the callousness and the the unnecessary cruelty with which with which the withdrawal was done. I think that'll stick with virtually everyone. It just didn't have to happen this way. Dexter filkins thank you so much. You can read dexter reporting on afghanistan and much more at new yorker dot com. I'm david ramnik and that's our program. "At your body enough foaling mirror. Yeah it's Look like a ghost It is sort of interesting to look at myself in the mirror and just kind of be in awe of How different my life is. And everything lost. And everything. I've learned i think of this You know these years of illness kind of being a transformative experience. You know sort of like her. Rebirth like shamanic desk. Carbon that vein. And you know it's ninety nine percent of the time it's been really horrific and an awful feels like a prison and there's been a lot of suffering but you know through all that i sort of see lights through fresh eyes. I guess yeah i'm finding. I have enormous capacity to enjoy life. I don't need much. I love that point. You're discovering your capacity for joy. That's really that's really cool. Can you give me an example of something you noticed of like. Wow this feels amazing We were we were out in the desert a few weeks ago and i got out of the card you know kind of lakes barely working but just tasting around the parking lot a little bit and there was this little black eagle on the ground and i just like wow look at that. It's a beetle down and it crawled up on my hand. And i just sort of let it do sort of like You know the beetle treadmill around my hand for awhile. These are all things that i i didn't really notice so much in life like being out in the desert. You only. I would notice her. Oh where the rocks where the good rocks on find some some rocks and now i'm looking at everything else. I mean hearing you describe this like a sense of wonder. It reminds me of walking back from the playground with my two year old. She can't walk three feet without stopping and staring. Close up at something you know and i just like come on. Let's go home. "Hey, if you're the kind of person who listens to a bunch of episodes back to back. I have a message for you consider supporting our weird little show with a monthly donation where public media podcasts, and we're only here. Thanks to your support. Any amount makes a difference? But my suggestion how about a monthly donation of five dollars. Head to ten things podcasts dot org slash donate. Or text ten things. Two seven one a one. Listener support it w in y c studios. Number one being late. Broke up with my first boyfriend because he couldn't be on time for anything. And he couldn't believe that. I would break up with him for that reason. Number two, compulsory heterosexuality. Number three was the wait a second here. I think. This would be an extension of compulsory heterosexuality. Tunnelling? It was problematic about men even gay men joking about like, you kinda Lingus just so much. Shame and stigma for millennia heaped up on women about their genitals being dirty or impure clean or offensive to. God. I think women shouldn't be ashamed with genitals. And they're beautiful, and blah, blah, blah. But, you know, little boys grow up, and they're kind of like squeaked out by the body of the other little girls to grow up kind of squeaked out by the body of the other and then little boys and girls hit puberty and those straight boys who were squeaked out by pussy are suddenly into it. But the little Gable is we hit puberty, and we are into dick. And we kinda don't get over it. Number four heirs. Number five, the Yellowstone Caldera. We'll Yellowstone which is national park. I will visit because there are grizzlies. Is just a giant open mouth of a Super Bowl came out. And look at the research at the science and some scientists say that overdue for a massive eruption. Number six climate change. Like. We need to pause. It's raining. So hard right now, I can hear it over my own voice. We could just say that. I mean, this is evidence of climate change right here. Like I've been in Los Angeles for a week and half. And they've having monsoons here. Like nothing they've ever had before it's knowing Hawaii in the permafrost is melting in Alaska. Everything's gone haywire. Number seven. Societal collapse. Number eight. The stupidity of rich people. Number nine. Antibiotic resistant gonorrhea. Number ten cars. I was telling this woman who's driving me around rural Canada. Yeah. I just don't like to be in cars cars make me nervous. And they stressed me out. And she looked at me. And she said we ever hit by a car, and I went, oh, yeah. Was five years old has run over in front of my mother and spent a few days in the hospital. I was like a never put those two things together. Number four. The fear of something wrong. We happen to your kids. And just the notion of it crippled you. Number five the fear of not being able to at chief. My big dream, which I put on hold for so many years that rim was to finish. My message. At that time in. Two thousand one. I've just studying and working, and then it happens main eleven it was a luck of rumors and our and and don't forget even one of these rumors omega. They gonna gather all the Arabs put them in camps.
