"Or she's in the room and she's counting off another man, she humiliated or at the coffee shop where she meets with Ryan, but we're in a place character called rain, or he tells to her where she talks to him. There's also a classic web search kind of scene where she looks up some people from her past from med school, and then basically to plot of the movie over wall surround her revenge on a bigger scale, the way they did it was like they just showed a number of pink number, like a Roman numerals on the screen, one to 5, and every time this is shown, it's like, oh, no, something else is happening. Now she's plotting her avenge against someone else. So each time she's going after another person in a different way that is somehow involved in the death to suicide or in the suicide that was caused by what they were involved in with Nina. There's one scene towards the end, where she is actually wearing a nurses costume, which we will also see if you Google the movie. There will be pictures on Google images. And I think that fits the theme too because she wanted to be a daughter but failed and they tried to underline this with the costume, I think. I think so too, I think that that was a jab at her med school days and came from her as a character as well. The reason she did it, then why is she dressed up like that? And all that stuff is connected to the bigger plot the bigger picture, which we are not going to spoil, of course, only minor schoolers here, I guess. She's losing herself, or she's lost herself in this emotional trauma and she can't live her own life. She's not being herself..

"Any kind. In today's episode, we're going to discuss the movie, promising young woman directed by Emerald Fennell, starring Carrie Mulligan. If you want to support us, use our Patreon link in the description and follow us on Instagram at readers table. So this episode is going to be a bit different than the other ones. We already did for this season, we're not going to cover a book, but a movie. And this movie that we chose to cover is called promising young woman. I don't know, maybe some of you have ever heard of it, or even seen it for us it was the first time and well what is this movie about? You want to quickly give us a summary? So the movie is about this 30 year old woman or this woman she actually has her 30th birthday in the movie. Who dropped out of med school with her best friend at some point. And her best friends call me now. She's called Cassie. They both didn't have a great time in med school because of something that happened to Nina. And then that also led to some minor spoiler to Nina's suicide, which is alluded to in their actually I'll try to spoken about. And the end and stuff like we're not going to talk about major spoilers. We don't want to cover the twist, which is classic to this type of movie because it's a thriller. But basically we see Cassie after death of Nina and is probably been a couple of years. She struggles with it still emotionally. Clearly she lives with her parents. She works at a coffee shop, which she, you know, enjoys, but at the same time, I don't think she really is being herself in many cases. She lets this emotional trauma really take over big parts of her life to the point where she gets revenge on men based on what happens to Nina. So she goes through these clubs, she kind of acts strong, let's take her home to their places and then confronts them. So the very first scene we get her in a bar and or in a club. I don't know what it was. And then she lets herself be taken home and then confronts that guy. So we see her routine. We see her struggle with that. We see her repeatedly do that to other men. To get revenge, basically for Nina. Whenever she does that, we see, especially in the beginning a lot we see that she gets out and notebook with a scrunchie around it and a pen, and then she opens that notebook and there's names in there. And you realize it's the name of the man she basically acts strong in front of us, so she gets them to go for her and then humiliates them. And whenever she does that she writes down the name, and then she also has like a count, where she counts how many she humiliated and is quite many at the beginning of the movie already..

But i'm a fan of that Filmmaker and friend that i know and Incredible cinematographer rachel morrison shot this totally dope commercial about working moms because she is one of the big proponents for how that needs to be a part of filmmaking now making it where these female filmmakers and storytellers and so. I feel like when women like you do that. It's like look you didn't lose your ability to craft stories just because you're inconveniencing a human and it just makes what you did. "He. I didn't know the conversation went something like i want to do this. And you said give me a popper at all do and he said yeah. Yeah and it was on a whim. Was that the first thing i already deal with. No i think. I think that again you like talking to an anisia. This is the thing that's really like the about always find terrible about talking about office. I just such bad memory. Even remembering basic facts about my life is is very difficult. But from what i remember. Andrew who's been obsessed with writing cinderella for years because of the rogers he's a big roaches and hammers and they did one and i think he likes doing stuff. When you think of we think like back catalogue. It's such a rich and unusual. We take things like cats or like jesus christ superstar for granted but the idea roof doing a rock musical based on like a bible story is quite out there and then and then a kind of dance show about hats and i think he is not truly inclined to try things that seem if not impossible difficult. Smoking lucky bucky. I've here talked about it. Maybe he i mean i look. I don't i don't know anywhere but definitely it is like because i think when things become hugely successful in part of our culture we forget that often they starters things that aren't very mainstream that all kind of unusual and so center under that he was interested in. It's like if something and what interested me as well as like how can you. What's why why. And so when he was talking about russia and he was talking about kind of a way of doing it the first conversation we had. Which is i think that dinner is. I said something. Like the problem with cinderella. Is that it. Is it hinges on the idea that you have. The woman has to change. Ourself to make yourself appealing. And so if you do it that needs to be entire if that needs to be interrogated that needs to be the thing that you got keep it would like ask why and what that says about about fairy tales and it was important to me that we as an audience are kind of complicit in its makes it sound very dowa. I should say it's a romp with lots of male stripping right but it's it's family friendly dimmer. But i think the thing is that we still as an audience wouldn't see the makeover knew about much. We love a character no matter how much we respect them. There is something about us where we want to see. Women sort of physically improving and so that kind of was the idea that it all kind of grew out of and and that was the conversation that we had in the beginning. I just said. I kind of want to see if it was possible. To have all the pleasures of cinderella. Have all those story beats the shoe and the ball and the midnight and all that stuff but but also make it feel like something. I would care about something that i would to the i would identify with. He wasn't just to kind of sad beautiful cipher In a sexy rocket dress. Yeah will you involved at all with the music. I mean in the sense of like. Did you say in the music. No i wouldn't. I mean you just wouldn't well david apple who's the amazing lyricist and andrew. We did it altogether so the thing. That was really exciting to me. Having never collaborated on anything like this was that we sit in a room and we talk about staff and then david nile have a big conversation about what we need what the soul needs to say and then andrew will you just being in a room with someone like andrew. And he's like oh yeah. What if it's something like this and he just starts playing the piano guys like what how. It's so completely i mean. Obviously it's like the thing that you do. But beyond. But i don't play piano. It's beyond my comprehension the kind of musical ability and also with andrea. He's got an completely graphic or maybe graphic photographic. What the right word would be. He can remember every piece of music he ever thought of so not just things. That are not just things that are published. He has like he has an orchestra in his head and he has a memory of a little piece of music. That was nearly right for something but from thirty five years ago. Then my it's just it's exciting to see somebody work like that. Who's brain works just completely different way and david zip the same way because like lyrics. I suppose i've never really stupidly thought about lyrics before you know the ones that i really respond to. Do you think you take some more on the basis of the melody before their lyrics and save your writer. I think so also because i will if the amount i lyrics wrong they whenever kerry achey and the words dot is not what i took the words to this. That leads nicely into mom's question. Fear was my question where we ask gosh g. you like kariuki. Oh no it's trick question. No i love it. I have if i was to have a birthday party this year. Which is seems unlikely. But if i was definitely have a karaoke corner i mean we have our inquiry machine at home you do see in. My husband will off well. Before we had a child. We'd would often just like have karaoke to to tear us she. What would you do these battles. I think uphold friends. We've whittled down like the friends that love it. We will always like separate. We would never like torment you. I want to an emerald final meeting now thing letting them know because that makes it sound like it's more refunded. I think probably i'll pull friends to suffer it but we definitely do usually every year before this year eurovision and carry a key and so everyone will come to your fish. We do the full thing. The scoring has made eurovision very difficult because scoring taste. You know so to hard year. How was a did you watch her. This year was sensation. It's one of the best years. did you work. yeah. I did in a bit. I like i really. It's one of the also because if you do the kind of eurovision drinking games every time this key change every time this costume change. Every time somebody gets down on their knees winks at the camera. Like all of those people at you know not anymore because we're also old but like people just cruel somebody wants us to to. They called the next aims. Anyone found my teeth. I was so proud because honestly i'm really quite square. Just the idea that anyone would have lost drinking. They drink but they will drink aftershock. Ooh not compose century. Yes yeah okay. Well because what happened was all the booze finished. Only had often has an over the road and my husband went over the road and was like and came back with like some classic ninety s sort of bench everyone just minds and lost and lost a couple of the..

"And all you eating. Well what are you enjoying so badly. Don't understand the thing is the worst thing that happened with my first pregnancy. Was i had a very wonderful and very of like chilled doctor and she was like the great thing is is he can eat anything. The baby will just take the nutrients away from you so you get and so. I was kind of diet like sonic milkshakes. I was like naming. I four milkshakes. The today by the end yeah. Now i'm really. I'm pretty bad. I'm bad at that stuff. Because for me i mean food at the best of times just so one and you as a woman. I still think well me. There's always quite complicated relationship with the kind of food do you want to eat. I cake and ice cream and burgers and so being pregnant is sort of slightly naughty gas ashes. Jail free cards. So so yes. So i've just been i mean and also because so busy it's like it's delivery on it's like don't look the delivery money that has been in the cooking in your house. The moment my husband is completely. What does your husband day. he works and advertising. Yeah says she doesn't have much time then well but we're lucky we have helped with without toddler. Lovely ninety and this. I mean weekends and stuff. We try and cook and i love cooking. I just have completely lapsed. I just it's just at the end of the day. I just con. I mean i just. I'm just like cruel cruel and bed. Basically and just eat. Whatever it's am what was growing up. Who was around the dinner table and he was doing the cooking. What were you eating so growing up. It was my mom and dad ma. My sister coco. My youngest coco. And mom i think moms probably one of those seventy s goals who just like. She ran away from her home in rural wales at sixteen to go to work in a closed shop on the kings road. She was like get me to wear those. Like snakeskin boots me to the rock and roll is and so and she just was like very much hurt. She always had her Cookery pass film so it was. it was just. I've thing i remember most. And i should say like my mother is wonderful kirk and she cooks a lot now but when we were little it was it was absolutely chicken. Care of amazon. S did a really great carbonara in a sort of innocent thing that ups the film lit and it was kind of all of that stuff. We were quite. We're we weren't did you. Live in london. We lived in king's room half the time you know we lived in. We lived in kind of elle's coursey area and half the time we were inherited. Show which is where. I kind of think of mostly when i think of Of growing up and and when we were there was it was always the best because on the way in on friday we'd stop at the fish and chip shop and fish and chips and the car and on the way back sunday. If we were lucky we'd be good. We hit the mcdonald's drive-thru on the all's court roads dodge go in and buy much too much too much and so it was always kind of framed by you could tell very healthy cuisine. Grew up with so you. Dad was jewelry designer. So does the jewish site and my mom was a longtime. She was photographers agent. And now she's a writer. She writes of very brilliant kind of dark suit. Dark comedy burkes with quite a of sex in them house lose non-deployment numb to believe his is her is home. Which is louise's fennell. And so she yes. She's really amazing and say she. Yeah when we grew up. She started writing when she finally had the time. I think it's sucha there are so many female writers that you look at them and they started when showed up. When did you start writing. Because i was acting. Because i was doing call the midwife and then we had a hiatus halftime it's called midwife. And then half time. You have six months off. And so i wrote books in the the hiatus because i loved her and i really always wanted to write films telly and things. But you know it's very difficult thing to get into. The first thing i write was very long book that was truly terrible. A real a real nonsense and it was like a long jillian words. And i am. I took it to a few publishing houses and they were like just really really dire. She and they were right. But but i'd written a sort of tv script for something called shiva hole. Which was the sort of doctor who type thing. Because i love sci-fi of that until i pitch that as a book and then bloomsbury very kindly gave me a shot to right that and then i was lovely. I tend to like weirdly. I couldn't i could write a book now. i think. I just don't know how i honestly look back. I just don't know how it's possible maybe did you. You wrote the script for promising young man. All the screen is the screen claim. Scratchy was it based on a book. No it was based on anything from you. Yeah yeah so. I think but now the idea right to book is so i think i think i just. I don't know it's so crazy. It's i've also got very bad memory for my life so i look at the books and i just feels like it just feels like magic that they appeared somehow because i love the in iowa so daunting but yet you You're doing everything now. Do you think you'll get some more. No i think. I mean i love acting i really love it and there are some things like i mean. The crown fabulous cute. God is in the next series of the crown convenient. You cost for the next series l. So don't know don't know yet don't know yet. He miller will be really interesting. So how old is commander in the next radio. I don't even know the time period that they're doing. Because maybe you know maybe it's been announced must be the death of diana. I don't know. Because because what. I know that elizabeth debakey announce elizabeth to becky's playing diners exclusive. Must be there must be shown my young. Yeah she's pretty young young. I just was looking at the dish. You say which of course when when we were so young when it happened she seemed like a up and that he says nothing not. It's so young. But i didn't know i didn't know who the next week facet also like. I'm really excited. Because i was such a big fan of the show. That and then when you're in something. It's just much more frightening to what jake says he. Sometimes you just never know when you're gonna come on so you're just enjoying josh o'connor's lovely performance and suddenly you're like face leans into view and you're like no so it no it'll be it'll be very nice to be able to watch it without kind of fair so so when we had sir andrew lloyd webber on he kinda said that the way that cinderella started was your identity politics his house or rounded. Because your family friend it makes. It makes my life very very much more. Hopefully it sounds fabulous. your hand. he. I didn't know the conversation went something like i want to do this. And you said give me a popper at all do and he said yeah. Yeah.

"Stunning film just phenomenal phenomenal mo. She's here ocean outside. Let's schinder cab on prego getting out. Come let's go then a meter. Fob emerald the now coming upon table manners. You've come in as i expect you to with the most beautiful brilliant energy god desk sly yeah radio. Thank you for being here. Thank you. we're gonna we're gonna race through this for about an hour. And i know that we go and you've got to really do starving. I'm always starving. You can we'll give you in twenty minutes. Shout it smells delicious. Is it really want good. I'm sitting taken. Oh very yes sounds delicious. I was just. I was just You feel equal with respect. Thought i got to wait for the ball. And i was very excited but actually targeted chickens has even at all was my. I feel like it was a great induction tool the night. For her dominance. I'm telling you whip it with us. Back ball spa. But we'll maybe i'll have one a little bit closer to tight to bring it on. Yeah so how are you. How is life poses. The most mental has this movement year of your life and baby too. Yeah i think so. I mean like i feel like the last three years have been a sort of like people say whirlwind but he really know how to describe it. Because i feel like. I've been just not living off especially 'cause covert like living my normal life with my husband we've been together forever you know at home but all this other stuff you know. The works staffers orders. Been going mad all around it. So yeah i feel like after this baby which do a couple of weeks. I'm going to take a couple of months off. Which i haven't i didn't do for the last one and it's been just i'm just I can feel it's that thing. I was trying to explain it. Someone is a bit like when even on a really long car journey. And you've needed the loo the whole time. But you've held it in and then you can see your front door and your owner. It's happening it's not lawson moment and so i think i'm i'm a couple of weeks away and then i can just fill my whole but of the like a sort of staggering kind of the desert with of sunburn. So you'll remember hassles at the moment so we're in was that my mom's always goes off so in rehearsals cinderella cinderella the longest. Wait you've ever had four cinderella's post to come out the cinderella musical supposed come out my god probably like a year ago. At least i can't remember because we've changed it so much now. It's been like i just everyone the thing is and it's the same for you and your industry like any live entertainment but live there an mtv comedy all that stuff like saucer and it's and for so many people as well. They fall between two stools like freelance or employed. And so they weren't they weren't able to get any help or it's just yeah and it's and it's been it's just it's just it's just been kind of dispiriting of course for everyone. Everyone struggled ready body. Of course so. Nobody's in a different boats. But i think it has been the last few weeks have been quite tough because yeah because you just see so many other sports and things being a everyone not able to social distance and stuff like that and then and that's fair of course but and you want to be safe but it's really tough when it feels like. There's there's different rules for different today. I think the rationale seems to be. If it's outside it seems to be okay but if it's in indoors seems not to be. Among we spoke to hundred he said is all about ventilation. He spent fortunes on the theater event. And also everyone's masked everyone facing forward. Nobody's there lots and lots of safety. I mean of course like we're in a pandemic. So i do feel like i'm naturally career law abiding said like whatever i'm told to do. I will just do it. That's the rules are clear time. Yes i suppose been this clear. They should be yeah. It's just like it's just. It's just really complicated isn't it. And i just i. But i do feel really bad. Every time it gets moved we have to tell people that tickets and don't stop stuff. It's like so how open no so we start previews on friday this friday and then we open. Well you still half full. So it'll be it'll be at fifty percent of the next few weeks and then hopefully if it does open up on july nineteenth we will be opening a folk patchy. But you know i. But i don't i i i've become quite because also with my promising woman that was supposed april of the cova cinemas everywhere simultaneously and so and then obviously everything changed and so i kind of got used to that thing if everything getting pushed and pushed obviously film as much easier much much easier to kind of contain promising woman is one of the best films i've seen in so long. I watched it yesterday for anybody who hasn't seen the film. Can you just kind of really hard to explain the quickly in a nutshell. Yeah because i spent a year trying to say it in a nutshell. And i'm always the worst. That base is just film is called promising. A woman got wonderful carey mulligan in it and it is about a woman who goes tonight cups and balls and pretends to be incredibly drunk and see if anyone approaches her and takes a home and the repercussions and the kind of yeah and then the fallout of what happens when they do so disappointed when the boyfriend was also the most dreamy. Lovely perfect kind of person does like extra extra. Pass what you did with a lot of the guys in sets from the first opening scene. Welcome him with open arms and that was that was an intention. Wasn't it the these familiar. Warm funny on the menu would actually want to sleep with that. All of the whole thing about for me it was like it's endemic the stuff in this film. There's nothing in this film. That wasn't in a comedy film like to be laughed at like five years ago. Big light comedy tv series would have jokes about like drunk taking drunk alzheimer. Yeah with the hangover so like that just but even more like mainstream kind of stuff when you look back at sort of editor to look very far back and so it was really important for me to be like okay. Well what we're talking about here is something that feels really a key because it's very close to home and it is you know it is a lot of men and boys and and women who kind of a cover up for it also apologize for it. It's your friends runs. Its people at parties. Etes your friends boyfriends. It's people you're at school with who really nice and you just like you. It was not treated seriously. If something happened to a girl at a party it was not. It was a whoopsie that they were expected to make a joke. Cov otherwise it was kind of on them an emerald. You are pregnant. You are doing syndrome east go. You're going to russell's now. I want to know how you are. Fueling this pregnancy and how has a pregnancy..

"Let's dive right back in with best director. Nominees are thomas winterberg for another round. David fincher from bank. Lee isaac chung for me. Ninety eight clue how for nomad land and emerald. Fennell for promising young woman stephen thompson. Gimme a will win and it should win in for will end. Should i'll go with clue jal i think she does beautiful work in. No maitland. I do wanna put in a good word though for emerald fennell and promising young woman. This film is so interesting and juggling so many tones this movie could have flown off the rails in so many ways and at the same time. It is absolutely gorgeous to look at what this movie is doing with. Color is so striking an inventive. It has an electric movie and when a movie feels electric off the way through you can often give the director a lot of credit for that. So i do want to put in a good word for emerald fennell but for will end should in this category. I'm going to go with kobe. Zhao all right fair. Enough i show. What do you think should win. Khloe joe will win. Make big mac. Yes so i think it's going to be david fincher because let's not forget that so few years ago. Even though moonlight wind up winning damian chazelle one for la la land and this is the category especially as director where they love to see the flashiest most technical intricate. Booby win So i think it's going to be probably david fincher. Although i would love to see joao went jau did win at the directors go to war so maybe that will happen. But i still think it's gonna be all

"Voices. They all have great voice sultry tones of especially joe base lily. It is a delight to have you onboard. But you hear talk about directing at this year's oscars so do you have a specific pick for winner for directing okay. I've got to admit something here and have some grace. The only film. I haven't watched out of. The directing category is nomad land. It's probably what we saw that. I've been living on for plus trotha casted turn please. Oh yeah then maybe come pick it up. So i don't know i actually think i'm a little bit scared to watch it because it's been like you know when people hype something up so much and then you watch it and yeah that's what i'm nervous about so i actually been putting it off even though i think it's going to be a fantastic film. I don't know. I'm i'm too scared. That is my pick to be fair. Even though i can't say that i feel like which is your favorite. Which is the favor of the ones. You have seen the other four. Which one would you go with. Vintage berg another round which is a controversy. Why is it even a controversy. I've had a fifty fifty people on the love. It or hate it. Some people think that justice. I think that it's just a whole bunch of middle aged like it's middle-age crisis movie where a whole bunch of men getting drunk and then they like. We don't see the entertainment value in that. But i thought that was like a whole interesting dialogue surrounding alcohol and he bats or it has jazz bill which means a conscious be about drinking. I mean i seen. that's why it's the best director. Category really should be best choreography. It's not. I mean it's just it's just a fucking great like it's just a great film it is. I love the automated. The thing with this thing with this directing categories. This is like this is one where it's just like. You look at all five of these nominees yet. You could give it any of them like it's similar to that. I had like del toro and nolan peel. And go wigan anderson where it was just like oh you give this to any of them like all of them have giving if not like korea. Best directing work in the maybe manque is not finished his career best. But it's pretty good and then you have chloe's out just kind of knocking out of the ballpark with with land. And then like lee isaac chung and emerald fennell coming out of nowhere with these beautiful beautiful films. Beautifully directed thomas vintage berg of like like the style wards of european cinema and special shad that we get to female doctors in the actual category. How and will be the sixth and seventh women ever nominated leadership serious. Three that we've had two women nominated and only one women previously has actually won the category and chloe's zahle is the first same avalon direct director to be nominated in this and he's probably like not only is she probably one of the few nominated. She's the first woman of color when i did. She's going to be the first woman of color to win an oscar for direct. It's kind of a like it's even more. I mean sorry to cut. You hope that i think i saw somewhere. She's what i mean for an amazing category of amazing directors. I think she's won all forty eight directing awards in which is mandatory. Because you think this is such massive discussion about where she came from as in like kind of emerald fennell had this wonderful build up with killing eve and then got backed by mugabe..

emerald fennell sixth lee isaac chung seventh two women Three del toro nomad land nolan peel fifty fifty people first five four one women joe base lily mugabe first woman thomas vintage berg korea this year

Oh god what was the movie with johnny knoxville. The horror film. That came out i love. Alexandra daddario tastic. Or on you taylor. Joy who played magic. And she was most recently in the queen's gambit if she's done with marvel man fucking. I'd love to see her as the tana's well. I think both both would be fantastic choices for the character but man a new new installment in the extended universe. The project marks the character's first appearance both in the eu and on the big screen. No one has yet been cast as the top had stage illusions illusionists who is also considered one of the most powerful sources in the dc universe inherited from her alchemist father. "emerald fennell" Discussed on The Qwipster Film Review Podcast

"Actor and most recently. She's played camilla. Parker bowles in the crown but shortly before the metoo movement really took hold all over social media and whatnot. Fennell had a dream in that dream. It was a drunk woman. She's lying on the bed of a stranger and the stranger tries to take advantage of this young woman and she keeps asking drunkenly what he's doing. Undaunted though he persists in his date rape and suddenly she sits up completely sober and asks again much more sternly what he's doing and he cowers in defense and i suppose some shame. Now fennell she. She was somebody who grew up. Set thinking about all of these teen movies that she watched growing up. She observed how easily consent was given away in these films. Or maybe simply taken by the male suitors who get young women blackout drunk. You know getting a woman drunk. All too often was portrayed as how young men should easily seduce. Women lowering their inhibitions and their ability easily. Leave a situation. They may not have necessarily wanted otherwise. And then we see. Oftentimes the walk of shame played for laughs in these movies. These young women stumbling out into the public hungover not really knowing what happened to them the night before. This was not only commonplace in these kinds of movies but largely condoned by society at large but fennell and many women especially of late did not view these actions as seductive at all the are what they are predatory date rape fennell started working on her screenplay in two thousand seventeen that was slightly before the metoo movement really took hold before harvey weinstein was exposed before the nomination of judge brett cavanaugh to the supreme court fidel channel. Oliver anger into this story about female rage called promising young woman. Nat its core. This film is revenge thriller but unlike others that came before it doesn't really go for fetal. Traction style violence or sexualize. Male gaze teases to titillate audiences fennell observe that women very rarely resort to violence when they're wronged so she limited her characters to how women might act. When seeking to get revenge on predatory men so she wanted it to be revenged by somebody who loved the victim instead of the victim herself. Because there's a protective aspect that needs to be involved often. The victim of such a thing is too traumatized maybe even too embarrassed to speak out or act out of fear of more trauma but those around here who see what she's going through and maybe feel injustice for her want to immediately strike back at those who caused that trauma as well as the system that lets these predators. Get away with their acts traditionally. If this were a male revenge film that would usually involve hunting down the perpetrators having them. Experience regret for a few seconds before they get dispatched. Now fennell script. She felt a worse. Punishment is to expose the nature of the actions of the perpetrators having them live with the knowledge that they have done wrong and that other people know it as well for the rest of their lives so determining to make the jump to becoming a feature film maker with the story fennell packaged her script within the context of thriller to get that message across in a way that would keep audiences both engaged and entertained instead of this. Dark and brooding drama. Promising young woman is as colorful and light in its look and its tempo. It has very catchy soundtrack. And it's a lot like those innocuous comedies. Dad fennell wants enjoyed growing up as a team and like the protagonist and the way that she goes about her business. The comic nature really lures people in with the promise for more but once they're locked in to taking in this film they're taking on an unexpected detour. Now the protagonist. I'm talking about in. This film is named cassie thomas. Cassie lives with their parents. While working this dead end job at thirty years old a barista in a small coffee shop. Her parents have been encouraging her to get on with life in ways. That really aren't even subtle anymore. Their birthday gift happens to be a suitcase. Cassie spends her evenings at the local watering holes to the point where he's in an obvious stupor inevitably somebody some of the men. There will offer to do the right thing and give her a ride home but during that ride home temptation does get the better of these men and they'll tell the cab driver to take to their home instead and there. They reveal themselves to be not so good guys. She'll reveal herself to be not so good either. She's not so drunk and she shames them for essentially trying to rape a woman. That's too intoxicated to give consent. That's the main premise of the story. There's more to it than that. For instance there's a romantic film as well. It's hard to believe. But cassie has a run in with this. Other gentleman named ryan. Cooper played by bo burnham a former colleague from medical school. Who's now working as a pediatrician. And here we pick up clues about kassy's past about how she was once on a fast track to becoming a doctor herself but she dropped out of school for mysterious reasons involving her best friend. Nina fisher the victim of a sexual assault. That never quite got justice until cassie made it her mission to stop predators in their tracks. Now ryan seems different than all of the the men that she so-called taking down and he happens to crack through kassy's tough exterior offering her the potential for a bright future again but she learns that the person who's most responsible for nina's rape is happens to be nearby. He's about to get married so now. Cassie has to make a big decision which paths. She's going to go down. The path of promise of a life of bliss with ryan or the path of vengeance on everybody who has done nina and other women potentially wrong including these seemingly indifferent school educators to lawyers who downplayed the allegations back in the day promising young woman in addition to the date rape culture also explores whether one bad act should keep a person from ever being seen as good many guilty parties absolve themselves for being either too young or too drunk to really know what they were doing at the time. Kathy seeks those people out years later to expose that their utter lack of remorse about what they did to ruin. The lives of others shows that they really aren't any better today than what they were back. Then one character has been wracked with guilt. cassie determines. he's one of the rare ones who's learned his lesson. Forgiveness is a theme in this film. But only for those who feel truly ashamed. At what they've done carey mulligan read the script and eagerly signed on. She saw the subject. Matter is very truthful much more so than controversial. Many other movies trivialize the predatory aspects of college parties and the club scene. Kassy's colorful appearance masks her darker thoughts in this film. Those inner demons they get exercise by becoming an avenging angel albeit only for a moment she lures young men and catches them in their predatory acts and yet she can't stop herself. She continues to mourn the loss of somebody that used to be her whole universe and then she has to do it all over again now audiences for this film especially ones who are attuned to thrillers might be ahead of the increasingly implausible and some very manufactured twists. That are here in the story. There are tonal issues that make promising young woman. An uneven experience overall although this film does have very fine performances and a handful of really great moments. That will be recommendable for some people. Fennell sought mulligan by the way for the role because she felt that this was the kind of movie that she had not seen. Mulligan in before mulligan happens to be very soft spoken. Not a very big public persona. So that makes her. The kind of enigmatic figure that should surprise a lot of movie goers with what she has to offer. She's also very talented and she delivers a real performance. Within this very heightened reality of the thriller genre mulligan fennell are the same age. Thirty five they had similar starts in business together. In fact as eighteen year olds the appeared on the same episode of this show called trial and retribution. Although they went their separate ways since then the male characters in this film are cast with actors many recognize as nice guys in other films. Romcom regulars like adam brody. Christopher means plas chris lowell matt greenfield among others. Fennell wanted actors that we've already had good feelings about. And we haven't seen as lecherous date rapists to kind of give us the element of surprise so-called get is can be not so good when they think they can get away with it anyway. Fennell up against this notion of gentlemen and reveals that nice guys good guys. Those are not synonymous terms underneath many men. They're looking for the same things but the nice guys so called nice guys are often going to drop that act when they see that they can get what they want and they can even be complete jerks when it seems like they can't quite get it good guys know it's wrong to take advantage of a situation and ironically are not always nice guys many of these guys think that they're good guys because they don't go around scheming to do bad things unaware but they seem to change their tune when they get a little bit of power over the object of their desire. If film works at all. I think it's thanks to the solid performances here especially by carey mulligan a little to mature in the role and not necessarily just by her age. She just carries an element of maturity about herself. That makes some of what she does a little bit more questionable than maybe another actor might have but she does portray very well. Somebody stagnating through life stuck in this pool of misery and grief. I think we'll burn. Them is also really really appealing as the only guy who manages to let kassy's guard down he shows that he's not like the other men and his charisma really does prove infectious especially during a charming impromptu. Sing along to paris. Hilton's stars are blind in a pharmacy. One of the problems that i have with promising young woman as a promising film here. It's at big so many questions that don't quite get answered in the course of the film. At least not as i saw on the first time. Watch for instance. How can cassie have done what she's done every week. Over the course of a year in the same community and not gotten caught up or gotten a reputation or at least gotten a cost hit by somebody somewhere down the line you would think that her activities would quickly earn her. That rep among the regulars at these local clubs especially when she's going to run into the same clientele. So how is this really going to work. And and how does she know that they won't actually take to her home every time that they're going to take her somewhere else. And what address does she really use. Is she really having them. Take her home and what would happen if they arrive there. It really calls into question so much and yet contrives exactly what it wants to do. Every single time i think one of the most contrived of all of these developments there's a video that emerges of the crime from way back win from years ago and that answers one question that is necessary for this film but it leaves so many others it actually produces a lot of other like. Why would the person who owns such video. Keep it for so many years. Maybe even transfer the file from of course one phone to another over those years because most people don't have their phone too long before they get a new one and once it is introduced. This is a real big. Tell because it's easy to guess where this story's going to go once that video does appear conversations within the film between and some of the people that she is confronting the lack lot of authentic. I feel the very short hand and not at all realistic. Let's characters talk on far too long and confrontations that would definitely have been ended by at least one party for the purpose of divulging additional plot points people to exist in this film solely to service that singular story. Alfred molina in particular. He's plays this lawyer. Who silence nina. He seems to have spent years just waiting for this moment when the plot would involve him. Connie britton. The college dean. She tried to sweep it all under the rug. Way back len in one of the least effective story angles casio's lord the dean's daughter away under the pretense that she to should experience. What nina did all of this should seem so horrifying so appalling so controversial if the film weren't already built on this bed of artifice and i think when we get to the very end of this film at tosses any hold on plausibility altogether. However tenuous into this free fall of tried to tie up every loose end with a lot of wish fulfilment i think it should be noted here infidels defense that this table turning inning was not her original intense. She had another one in mind. More of the violent retribution. Kind that she had really been avoiding a lot but fennell felt when she started to write that it would eventually ring false to the character for the audience and so she decided on more of a greek tragedy ending which is more or less depicted in the film. But we also get this extended epilogue toward the end of the film. I won't spoil it but it continues a lot. The revenge tactics that she was undergoing. And the reason why that's in the film is because the financiers insisted that this film could not end. In the more tragic way that female had intended so fennell concocted this additional epilogue in order to get her film finally financed and made so so. There's more sugar coated ending. I guess on top of the ending that she wanted to deliver but yet it just feels so false. I believe still in the way that she was trying to avoid all along. And that's what ultimately keeps me from being able to wholeheartedly recommend this film despite those really good performances and some key scenes here that i do think it worthwhile for some people overall. I think particularly strong. Is this theme. Maybe this was not the intent but revenge can sometimes be destructive to the person who seeks it that saying often attributed to confucius that says before you embark on a journey of revenge. Dig two graves. This is a real close call for me as far as whether i would completely recommend this film or not. I do think that there are enough elements here but i do think overall for me. It just falls just.
