"Tweet me as well a managed Brian Barrett on Twitter. We are at us. Be nation radio. Yeah. Just thought I'd give the outline of how sometimes baseball games take way too damn long. We need to have like some kind of rule at the end of the game where if it's after fifteen in say fellas, let's just call this thing it's because you're trying out there guys. It should not be pitching, a major league games and it's funny, too, because the starter for the Red Sox last night, David price he pitched seventy three pitches. And they took him out after five she only gave up one run after the game. The Red Sox said there was nothing wrong with them. They only kept him in there for five innings. I think they regret that move. I think they would've liked David price to go a little bit longer than five innings considering the fact that the game went seventeen innings like you forget that certain elements happened in that game that actually happened nonetheless it was incredible to see a game go that long last night. Whereas outlasting all the west coast games, and it wasn't any of that like well played a game. It was kind of a sloppy game if you will it wasn't like. Great baseball, max Kepler and zippy in the aero this guy, max Kepler, okay? Eighth inning ties up the game where the base hit to tie the game at two and then you fast forward to the thirteenth ending as I told you hit a home run to force it into fourteen innings after Mookie Betts hit home run in the top half of the thirteenth inning. And then he gets the game winning hit in the seventeenth inning. So I guess the only person that had a really good night would be max Kepler of the Minnesota Twins. Anyway, I want to get back to the Lakers. So Adrian words rescue of Yahoo is reporting that the Lakers are now looking to open up an extra. Max salary-cap spot to go after another big name free agent. Now, the Lakers are hoping to have about thirty two million dollars space. Now, they're scheduled have somewhere between twenty four million dollars and twenty eight million dollars, depending on whether or not Anthony Davis, decides to waive his trade kicker or not. So I would say, probably not gonna wave that he's probably gonna keep the money because of the fact that anti-daewoo is the one that rape. Before the trade deadline two and a half weeks before he was demanding trait. It's like a kind of put the pelicans at a bad position here. I don't think Anthony Davis has also somebody that had his agent, Rich Paul come out and say he will not play for the Boston Celtics could trade form and play this year? But he's never you guys something tells me that, that guy, Anthony Davis is gonna want all his money. Right. And it's funny like if he wants all his money, it's not like Lakers, fans are gonna be mad about that, right? Lakers fans are going to be oh. Well, we got Anthony Davis. So it's no big deal. Well, this guy wanted to go Laker so bad, I thought because they want to win a championship, and I'm not trying to get another people's pockets. But if that was his prerogatives that was his goal and it's easier to get another guy by doing something financially. Like we've seen Tim Duncan do for years. And we saw Michael Jordan do for years. Well, why when you do that help the team out? But nonetheless, apparently, that's not how Anthony Davis wants to go about his business, but nonetheless, as I get back to the Lakers, this is what kind of scares me about the Lakers, not that they're trying to open up additional salary cap space, because that makes perfect sense to me. That's what you wanna do. As the Lakers. Right. You want as much salary cap spaces you can possibly have because quite frankly. No matter what you do in the draft. And of course, you already lost that fourth overall pick, and I'm not saying you're wrong for doing it. He gave it to the pelicans, so you could acquire one of the best ten players in the world. And arguably the best big man in the world. So I'm not saying that was the bad move given up the Lakers pick. But it's not like you have a lot of draft picks anyway. And also you factor in how much value you're gonna really get out of a draft pick this year, that's going to help you in this season. Two champion also it's guys like you're going to have to get rid of a bunch of salary dumps guys like Wagner, who quite frankly, Wagner, I get at a nice career Michigan, but he's not doing anything to help the twenty nineteen twenty twenty Lakers championship not criticizing rob Pelinka and his group of guys for deciding that they want to make some trades pull off some salary cap gymnastics. If you will, to acquire more talent my fear is that they're going to acquire the wrong town. That's what I feel with rob Blanca, and I don't know why I would think something along those lines because it's all like this is the same organization that last summer when out and. And didn't sign Jon Rondo land. Stevenson, javale McGee to go along with the Brian James and let brook Lopez a stretch five go to the Milwaukee Bucks. Right. It's not like it's that team handling it's business. So call me crazy for being concerned about how rapport link is going to spend his money because I feel like now the Lakers are in this position where they wanna go big game hunting again. Right. Okay. So let's lay out for you. Jimmy Butler is not come into the Lakers. The Philadelphia seventy Sixers are going to give him a max contract based on the way that he played in terms of the playoffs. He was the Philadelphia seventy Sixers best player. There's no way Philadelphia can't allow him to get away. So they'll sign him and they'll have the Embiid Butler duo for years to come there and Philadelphia or until two years from now, and Jimmy Butler is knees inevitably give out because he continues to have issues. But again, that's a different point. He's going there is going to go back to Toronto or is gonna go to the clippers despite reports. Oh, Damon Jones says he could be interesting. You think Coa or interested in the Lakers, you think is going. To say. Yeah. I'm gonna go to the Lakers. And even if I turn out to be the better player than LeBron next year which is possible. Right. He's still gonna play second fiddle to LeBron you think he's actually going to go there and play second fiddle to LeBron? So what does that leave you with Kyrie Irving, Kyrie irvings now playing with the Brian again? I get Kyrie's a weird guy. He has a different type of personality, right? Nobody knows what he wants. And I don't even quite frankly, think kyri knows kyri once. Right. This is the same guy that said he wanted his own team, and he was able to get his team in Boston, and then that wasn't good enough for him. Right. Hit issues with the young guys. Well, that's part of the process kyri when you have your own team like some of the young guys aren't gonna be all star, caliber players from day, one that just kind of the reality of how the league works that's a life works people aren't their best at their job. The first day they get it. So it's kinda how the league works, but anyway, now kyri wants to go to Brooklyn, and it's going to be the same type of team in apparently everything's gonna be okay, there just because he's changing locales. I guess I don't know 'cause car told the season ticket holders in Boston he'd stay there. Forever if they would have them at apparently changes might on that, now he wants to go to Brooklyn, but he can't go to the Lakers. Right. Because this is the guy that you left, okay. You left the Brown because you said you wanted your team if you go back and you play with the Brian you'd look like a complete hypocrite, that would just be an awful look for kyri so Kyrie's out. So Kyrie's out. She me butlers out. So what does that really leave you with Leonard's out, what does that leave you with in terms of the Lakers? Klay Thompson is not going to Lakers Golden State now, especially after, you don't know what's going to happen with Kevin Durant. And the fact that Claes coming off an injury, it would look bad, if they tried to take a discount on clay, they're going to offer him a five-year max contract to keep the splash brothers together as they move into their new building there the chase center in San Francisco. So who does that leave Kemba Walker? If Kemba Walker doesn't re- up with the Charlotte Hornets and Kemba. We all know wants to resign with the Hornets and quite frankly, if I was Kemba Walker, I would wanna to, but the Hornets as well, because they can offer them the most money. Right. That's why we hear these reports from Kemba Walker side that, you know what he may be willing to take a look. Little bit less. Okay. Because what they can offer us about two hundred and twenty million dollars after he qualified for the supermax and from Lakers, perspective, or anybody else out there on the open market, the Knicks. Then that's wherever else. He's interested in. They can only offer one hundred and forty so that's why saying I may take a little lesson take like two oh, five instead of one forty because eighty million dollars big gap to twenty two forty right? But say hypothetically, the Hornets say you know, we're just gonna go full rebuilt Kemba we love you. But we can't afford yet that price. Okay. So can they hit the open market? I just don't see that as a great fit with the Lakers. I don't I understand that on talent. You would say, oh, you got three all-stars but Kemba Walker is not a great defender. And you don't really need Kemba Walker skillset. Right. Because LeBron James is the de facto point guard. He's going to have the ball, most of the time Kemba Walker is at his best when he has the ball in his hands. So what exactly does Kemba Walker do for you? Right. Because you're going to have them off the ball that just doesn't make sense, right? Kind of be like, I say, smaller version literally, but it kind of. Be like having James harden and say, hey James go stand in the corner. It just doesn't make any sense whatsoever when cameras at his best, he has the ball and you have LeBron he somebody that clearly needs the ball in his hands and you wanted his aunts, because he's arguably the best playmaker in the history of the sport. Okay. So what I look at from the Lakers angle is you need to go after roll guys that fit around LeBron Anthony Davis. And I don't know if rob Pelinka has the ability and Kurt Rambus in that front office, as well to actually get the proper pieces around those guys because we saw the handled last off season. With Rondo Stevenson, javale McGee, excetera his resume tells us that he doesn't know what the proper pieces are to fit around the Bron, Anthony Davis is the obvious obvious one. He's a top ten player in league who wanted to come to the Lakers, who Laurent basically did more work getting there than you did, rob Blanca..

"This has everything to do. With does your best player to your best players play their best. When their best is needed. Toronto has the the best player on the floor. He's playing his best when his best is needed. And that's why they're ahead. Three games to two what Philly needs to do is Ben Simmons. Joel Embiid Butler and Harris have to play great. They have to summon up a great game at home and take this to seven and then take their. Shot. Well, listen, I don't I can't argue with any of those points actually agree with you. I'm just not sure the Sixers who see it that way. But it remains to be seen which I'm gonna Jeff Van Gundy right here with Steven. He has been ready to ESPN just couple of more questions while I let you go coach who's the best big man in basketball right now when you consider the way the joke joke inches playing in Denver right now. He's been absolutely phenomenal. I think Denver is gonna win this series in seven games because of it, of course, with Nurkic being out for the rest of the season in Poland. The needs cancer playing with a separated left showed us. What are your thoughts about who the best big, man? A basketball is is it him. I think he's playing the best right now. But if you gave me everybody healthy, and I had a choice for one game. I think Embiid would be my choice. I think you know, Embiid had a really good year. But I don't think we can disconnect. You know, we wanna say win available, but ability is sometimes your greatest strength. And for whatever reason it makes sense to me. I may not make sense to the load managers out there. But it makes sense to me when a guy place as little as in beat has. Since the all star break, and he doesn't get to practice as much obviously that he's going to not be sharp. And where are you see it is when he puts the ball down in Toronto comes to give help and support those are turnovers right now because I don't think right now, he's sharp with the ball. And I don't know how you could be playing so little and practicing even less than that probably. And so availability is a huge issue. Yokich is obviously available on a regular basis for Denver. He's playing great. And I just hope for him beat say that his body holds up and that he can play a full season practice regularly. And then take it into the playoffs to give him and his team. His best chance of playing his best. When his best is needed. Because his best is needed right now. Coach for let you go last question as an aside. I was on I take yesterday and Mexican and I got into a debate that ultimately went viral because his position was why lended is more clutch. Dan koby? I don't know what the definition of that is with these analytics dudes, and what have you, but I will tell you. This. My attitude is Kobe Bryant Kobe Bryant Kobe. Bryant was also drafted fifteen years ahead of Kawai. Let it Kobe Bryant played in a different era Denka wild. Let it Coa Linden did have the cushion of Tim Duncan monitor nobly, Tony Parker and the system in San Antonio. And so is great as violent it is. We're just seeing some of the, you know, him being that number one option then being that go-to guy excetera, and it's been absolutely fabulous. But I'm certainly not ready to give him that edge over Kobe Bryant. What do you say about all of that coach I say referred to that sound that you play?.

"Get all the drama from the Anthony Davis. Rumors and fortunately for the NBA that's just going to continue once the season gets over the they have that built in storyline. Whereas Davis going to go the battle off of the floor between the two historic rivals, the Lakers and the Celtics. So fortunately for them. Davis does not get traded yesterday. So that will just continue into the off season. So they'll go into the draft then into the Davis rumor season and then free agency. So that works out swimmingly for the league. But something else happened over the last couple of days and especially yesterday that had to make the league smile. I love the NBA. I watch a lot of the NBA. Let's be honest. The playoffs. Have been ultimately predictable. Right. We've seen LeBron versus the warriors over and over and over and over again, one of the top topics in sports radio last, June was are you tired of the warriors versus the Cavs. Are you tired of LeBron James versus Golden State? That was one of the topics. Does your thrown out there? I think by every single sports radio host in the country. Well, now, we don't have to worry about that. Right. Obviously LeBron moved out west. We knew it was going to be different this year. We're going to have a different finals. No doubt about it. No matter what happened LeBron being in L A changed things. But the west is still too many a fate accompli. It's a given many people just look at Golden State and say no one's going to beat them. I mean, why would you imagine that any team could beat Golden State if they were healthy Golden State has been that machine in the added DeMarcus cousins, I know what cousins brings to the table. And I know what the warriors have been. But even I had to take a step back watching cousins. On Golden State for the first time when you realize that they have not had a center that could do much offensively. Right. Zazai Pachulia is not somebody that you talk about in the pre game. You don't say man, we gotta take Zaza out of the game tonight. That never happens all due respect Zaza, DeMarcus cousins can shoot he can shoot from three. He can shoot from eighteen. He can handle the basketball. He can pass those are things collectively that the warriors. Really haven't had at the five position. You had Zaza you add javale McGee just a huge upgrade with cousins. He makes that team that much tougher to beat especially when you talk about a series one game. Okay. Maybe seven game series. Good luck. So the west is still Golden State. So what the NBA needed the NBA needed the Eastern Conference to be something the NBA needed something to keep the people watching in the playoffs. You'll watch some good playoff series in the west. But in the back of your mind, you'll know what the result is likely going to be your watch the warriors play just because. They are so spectacular. You will watch them because you love the product that they put out, but the NBA needed another hook. They needed something else in the post season. And that's what they got. They got an arms race in the Eastern Conference over the last few days in that arms race is going to keep people watching throughout the playoffs. That arms race is going to make the postseason a heck of a lot of fun because when Philly went out, and they added Tobias Harris that put pressure on every other top Eastern Conference team. Now, the Celtics they didn't do anything. They didn't do anything because they looked at their team and said we go nine or ten deep. We wanna keep our assets. Just in case we can go out and get Anthony Davis on July first. So we're not going to make a drastic move. We've won ten out of the last eleven before last night's loss to LA we've won ten out of our last eleven we feel like we're in good shape. We got a deep bench. We got a young bench. Jaylen Brown's tendered around. All these good things are happening for us. There's no need to do anything drastic here. But other than Boston Milwaukee made the trade to get to write a great trade for them. They pretty much swap. Thon maker for marriage, which is a no brainer. So Milwaukee makes a deal Tobias Harris already in Philly with that deal, and then Toronto goes out, and they get aggressive again, and they add Marcus, Saul. So what you had was tit for tat jab jab haymaker for haymaker the Eastern Conference teams up top. They looked at each other and said we to do some work. We just saw Philly ads bias Harris. And now they have the big four of Simmons. Embiid Butler and Harris, we can't just sit on our hands. Now, I'm not telling you that is the only reason why Toronto went out and got Mark assault. I'm not telling you. That's the only reason why Milwaukee went out and got mirror teach. You have to do what's best for your team. You can't be worried about what other teams are doing. If you're comfortable if you're confident in your current roster. Then you stick with that roster. But you should always be looking for upgrades, especially when you're in the top three or four of a conference. And so that little added pressure. I'm sure helped but it wasn't the end all be all. But the result was for the league that now the Eastern Conference is great now the Eastern Conference is legit. You look at the top four teams, and they are all deep. They are all dangerous. The semi finals in the Eastern Conference could end up being the Milwaukee Bucks versus the seventy Sixers in the raptors versus the Celtics just think about that for a minute. Think about the quality play of those four teams the box against the seventy Sixers the raptors against the Celtics. That would be ridiculous. That would be an unbelievable final four in the Eastern Conference. And not only do you have the deepen dangerous teams. But you have star power. That's so important in the NBA. We always say the NBA is a players league. And it's so true. If you have those final four team standing in the east. You were gonna watch Yana sent it to Kubo. You're going to watch Kawhi Leonard you're gonna watch Irving and you're gonna watch the Philly four. I would probably say the guy is NB an NBA those four that's what you're going to see. And that's what the NBA wants. They want competition. They want a bloodbath in the Eastern Conference. They want star power. They wanna see Janas versus Kyrie. They wanna see and bead versus Jaanus or or Janas versus Mark Asala Embiid versus that's what they want stars versus stars deepen dangerous team versus deep and dangerous team. And now, they have it the Western Conference might just end up being Golden State and everyone else, but at least NBA fans can look forward to watching the Eastern Conference play out because it should be good. It should be borderline great. Here's Tim Legler on his favorite team in the east. There's something special about this team their top five both ends of the floor. They've got a true superstar leading them. Great three point shooting team and now mirror teaches a perfect digital more. Most importantly, this might be the most complete team. I've seen start to finish. There's been no blip in the radar since the season started. There's something special about them. And I love the way that they're coached. I think the box still are going to be the number one team coach. This is a very fluid situation. Apple beating each other. Here's the perfect scenario for the NBA. Not only do they have that bloodbath. That epic final four in the Eastern Conference. But you have one of those four teams get to the finals and beat the warriors. That would be the perfect scenario. Because now that the warriors lost that Eastern Conference team. It makes that Eastern Conference team that much more formidable moving into next season. And now you can have the two powerhouses entering into that year. Of course, if Kevin Durant stays, and what else happens at free agency, and trades. But that would be a great scenario for the NBA. Maybe summer out there feeling the fatigue from the warriors. And I get that. If you could have one of these four Eastern Conference teams knock off the warriors at least just this year. That would be a story, then you'd have the warriors almost, you know, having the comeback story in twenty nine thousand nine hundred twenty twenty can that Eastern Conference team. Do it again that Eastern Conference teams survive other teams in the east? What do other teams in the east? Do do the Celtics get Anthony Davis. Keep an eye on the Knicks and the nets tons of cap space. Knicks might end up with the number one pick and have Zion Williamson on their team next year and out in the west keep an eye on the Los Angeles Clippers I love what they did at the deadline. They might be as good as they were before they traded Tobias Harris, and they cleared out enough cap space to get not one but two max contracts on that roster. It's going to be a fun fun offseason. But before we get there, the NBA got what they want. They now have four top teams in the east any one of those four teams could win the Eastern Conference in challenge, Golden State. That's what the league wanted. That's what the league needed less predictability. Coming up. What will we do this Sunday with no NFL, plus spring training or the combine that's next? It's first and last on ESPN radio and the ESPN app phase.

"Speaking of the NBA the trade deadline came and went yesterday at three eastern time twelve Pacific, and there were tons of trades. You know, when we talk about a trading deadline. We just want to see action. There's really nothing worse as a sports fan. To get all excited about a trading deadline. And then nothing happens that is so disappointing. And so yesterday as we were getting ready. We wondered was the Kristaps Porzingis trade as good as it was going to get was it going to be a day of non stop activity, and I'll be honest. I was on this very show yesterday morning in I doubted that we would have lots of action. I did believe we might see one of Marcus Saul or Mike Conley be dealt from Memphis because of what the grizzlies are going through right now and Gusau cleaned out his locker, which is usually the universal signal of I want out. So I figured something would happen with one of those two guys probably saw. But there was so much action so much activity and our Adrian road drowsy as usual killed it bomb after bomb after bomb after bomb getting dropped on Twitter yesterday during the trading deadline, tons of trades some big names moved, and it's exactly what I want. It's exam. Exactly what you want, quite frankly, it's exactly what the American people want. So I want to look at what happened. During the deadline in some winners and losers, right? I'll start with Philadelphia. The addition of Tobias Harris was so big for them. They are no doubt a clear. Winner of the trade deadline Harris is going to help them space the floor. I thought their offense was clunky with Butler and Simmons and Embiid. You've got 'em bead wanting to be in the lane, and the paint you have Jimmy Butler and both Ben Simmons Watson the basketball in their hands to create. So I thought it was a little clunky. The spacing wasn't great in Philadelphia with that trade. Four butler. They did not have enough depth, and they did not have enough shooting on the floor. So adding Harris ads the shooting and it helps with the spacing. It was a big time addition. They also added Jonathan Simmons by trading Marquel faults. We'll talk about that trade a little bit later on on the show they brought in NS from Houston. So they created some depth as well. I thought Philadelphia did a very good job over the last couple of days and getting Harris Simmons and NS that will help their death depths. Now, they can go seven eight maybe even ninety and Harris is a guy who could score twenty points any given night. He was averaging around twenty one for the clippers. He's a legit all star player, or at least borderline all star player in the league. So now Philly has their big four to make the Ron with Simmons. Embiid Butler and harass another winner at the deadline was Toronto the aforementioned, Marcus. Paul and I had said yesterday during the show I was fascinated by what Toronto was going to keep an eye on the raptors is how I phrased it. I was wondering if the raptors we're going to continue to be aggressive because when you look at that move for Kawhi Leonard once you make that kind of decision as an organization, and you go forward you've got to keep going forward. You can't put it into fifth gear. And then slide back to second wants the trade deadline comes around you've got to continue to push. So adding Markelle Saul was a great move by Toronto. I think he's a fantastic fit within that offense. He can pass he can post. He could stretch you have surgery Baca in Gosol now as the front line. So I really like I really like the Saul in Toronto. And here's the second part of that trade. Don't get it twisted. This was a signal to Leonard that we're serious. We are serious about making a run if you thought the trade for you was the last that's not what's going to happen here. We are focused on being the very best team that we can be. We're not happy just getting into the playoffs. We we've been there several years, right? We always fall short. We're going for everything now, and that's very important for the future of that organization. It might not be the difference between staying or leaving and going out to LA. But it might force co why to think a little bit deeper about Stang? So it helps right now on the floor. It makes them a better team. And they might have helped their case with Kawhi wants to season is over which is huge. Then you had Milwaukee. We talked about Philadelphia's trade of Tobias Harris a couple of days ago. And at that time we had said this could start an Eastern Conference arms race. And that's precisely what happened. I mean. Philly gets harassed Toronto goes out and gets Consol. And then Milwaukee makes a move. They ended up turning there were a couple of moves. But big picture overall. The result was trading Thon maker who they weren't playing in landing Nikola marriage. Marriage comes from New Orleans. He gives them length. He gives them shooting in when you look at the bucks. This is a team now that can roll ten deep. Here's Tim Legler on Milwaukee. There's something special about this team their top five both ends of the floor. They've got a true superstar leading them great three point shooting team. And now mirror teaches a perfect addition. But more importantly, this might be the most complete team. I've seen start to finish. There's been no blip in the radar since the season started. There's something special about them. And I love the way that they're coached. I think the box still are going to be the number one team. Coach, but this is a very fluid situation. Beating each other. So winners at the deadline. Just the name three of them Philly Toronto, Milwaukee how about the losers. You've got to start with the Lakers. Nice win last night. Great job beating the Celtics down by as much as eighteen the youth really showed up showed the guts they scratch. They called. They came back on the road. Nice win for LA last night. But it was a tough day for the Lakers. They wanted Anthony Davis at the beginning of the day. The hope was Anthony Davis would be a Laker by the end of the deadline. The hope was. Carmelo Anthony might join us. They went from Anthony Davis Tomorrowland, Carmelo Anthony. And that's no disrespect to mellow, but we've seen metal the last couple of years. He's not the same mellow to from hoping in praying that Davis is going to be a Laker to I will just go out and and possibly sign mellow. That's a huge huge drop off. They will need to have that effort. They had last night if they want to get into the playoffs and not only get into the postseason, but make some noise. So the Lakers. Absolutely a loser. I thought Utah was also a loser in the jazz have played much better as of late. I thought they were going to be the second best team in the Western Conference. They got off to a very very slow start. But they've picked it up recently. They wanted to acquire Mike Conley from Memphis that was goal. There was a rumor about possibly Ricky Rubio going to Memphis. Uncommonly coming back to Utah. They wanted Conley. And and that would have been a game changing move for them colonies come back. He's played. Well, that would have been a fantastic addition for the jazz as they continue to kind of roll downhill with the momentum. But they failed they failed. They were unable to acquire. Conley. They fell short. And so now you look at Utah in while. They're a nice team. You wonder do they have enough star power, especially in the west? The conversation has always is going to come down to Golden State so Utah as well as they play. I don't think they have enough star power to truly challenge. It seemed like the warriors who roll out five all stars in their starting lineup. So Utah is a loser to me. And finally, this is kind of a sneaky on the Charlotte Hornets the Hornets were losers. They desperately need to keep Kemba Walker. Kemba Walker is the only player right now that people identify with in Charlotte in he's going to be walking into free agency. They needed to do something to prove to Walker that they're going to at least try to make a run try to make a run try to sell Kemba on the future of this team. And they did not do that. They did nothing to help. So if you're Kemba and you're looking around, and I know Kemp has been on record saying that he would love to stay in Charlotte, and that he loves Charlotte and all those kinds of things, but if you're Walker and you're looking around in once again, Charlotte fails to put the pieces together to make themselves a somewhat dangerous team late in the season. You've got to wonder if enough is enough and it's time to move on. So three losers at the deadline Lakers jazz in the Hornets coming up we'll. Collar Murray be a no show for the as its next. It's first and last on ESPN radio and the ESPN app today. He's going.

"Overnight. We had a big trade in the NBA. If you're just joining us right now getting into your car getting ready to go to work. Maybe you're leaving work. Maybe you're in a factory. I don't know what you're doing. Maybe you're home eating breakfast dig trade in the NBA Tobias Harris goes from the LA clippers to the Philadelphia. Seventy sixers. So now the Sixers have their big four set Simmons Embiid Butler and now Harris. Meanwhile, we're all waiting for the bigger shoe to drop literally and figuratively. Anthony davis. What's going to happen with Davis? Is he going to get dealt before the trading deadline tomorrow afternoon. Now, the very latest is that the Lakers have quote unquote, pulled out of this deal pulled out of negotiations after a big time offer again Adrian mole drowsy of ESPN reports that the latest offer. And apparently, according to these reports the last offer the Lakers are giving to New Orleans involves Lonzo ball Kyle. Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Josh heart Evista zoo. Botts KCPT contagious caldwell-pope in two first round picks. That's what the Lakers have offered. Sounds like a bunch right? Sounds like a lot. The pelicans del damps the GM he's picking up the phone magic on the other end knee, saying not really not into it. Not in love with it. Imagine trying to sell them. In Solomon's Salomon Dempsey's gone. You know, I think we could get more magic. We want more picks. We want more players we want everything you've got to imagine magic at one point said death. What do you want? What can I possibly give you that is enough? This is outrageous. And as a matter of fact, the report in the LA papers yesterday said that that was the words that the the Lakers front office. They were using it. It's outrageous. What the pelicans are looking for gosh darn it. What are you looking for Dell? I'm only Magic Johnson. Not really a magician. I can't create other players and picks that I don't have. I'm giving you everything I've got. Earliest most of what I've got to be honest with you and Dempsey's steadfast. He sang, no, I'm not I'm not down with this trade package. I don't think this is what I want to do right now. And I am one hundred percent comfortable sitting here in my luxuriance office in New Orleans and saying no to you magic in what we have. Now is a game sarahspain bread here at ESPN. She says the Lakers and the pelicans they're playing a game of chicken. It's basically one big game of chicken. The Lakers have put what we're calling the godfather offer on the table. And the pelicans still want more and most people would argue deservedly so not only do they need to get back enough to build after losing their all-star face of the franchise top five player, but they also don't want to leave any impression that they were bullied into making a deal with the Lakers beyond booze old into giving. Davis and Rich, Paul clutch sports Lieber. Iran and the Lakers exactly what they want. Now. If you remember the original pelican statement after Anthony Davis via sources is agent declared that he wanted to be traded that he wanted out. He would not resign. What the pelicans the original statement from New Orleans said this is going to be done on our time line and to me and everybody else that's a shot across the bow to the Lakers saying the pressure will not get to us. We will make the best decision for the future of our team. Not because Anthony Davis and clutch sports and LeBron and the Lakers and everybody else are trying to force our hand. Shoutout to Sarah Spain of ESPN using the word bamboozle the one of my favorites. Back at the studio in Bristol. I've got to tell Jake in an alley. I've got a theory on this. And this is my theory. New Orleans is waiting for Jason Tatum. That's what I take from all of this. Okay. I if you look at the offer ball Kuzina Ingram heart zoo, Botts case, EP two first round picks. The fact that New Orleans is saying thanks, but no, thanks. That tells me that they believe that they can get something better than that package from LA in what could they get better better than that package from L A if you think about it now, I'm not in love with Lonzo ball. I think Kyle. Kuzma is a good player. He he could maybe end up being being all star a someday down the line Ingram. I think has been inconsistent and disappointing Josh hearts. Nice piece. I think thanks to the opportunity. He's gotten in LA. He might look a little bit better than he is. I think he's a good player. I think he's good. But Mike might look a little bit better with the circumstances. Going on and zoo Botts is possibly if you believe some pundits, some experts some scouts. He could have a high ceiling as a big in the league Casey PISA throwing for salary and the two first round picks if the Lakers get Davis Davis and James those two first round picks aren't gonna mean much, but it's still when you look at the rest of the league, and what other teams can offer that Lakers deal is still as good. I think as the New Orleans pelicans could get right now, there's no other team out there that can funnel more players. I mean, Philly could put together a package with Markelle Fulton. Ben Simmons or something. Outrageous. That's not going to happen. They just traded for Tobias Harris, the clippers don't have enough the clippers don't have more than that L A deal. The bucks don't have anything near that LA deal in the Knicks after trading Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas, they don't have anything close to that the amount. Maybe if they get the number one pick and they're willing to make. Entertain the idea of trading Zion. Williamson and Kevin Knox. Maybe you get into the conversation. But at this point right now on the calendar, right? If you're looking at all the possible deals on February six to two thousand nineteen for Anthony Davis that LA deal is as good as it's going to get. So why is New Orleans saying, no? They're waiting for the Celtics. The Celtics cannot get involved in these trade talks until July first, you know, that you've heard it enough, right? The pelicans are looking at the Celtics in it's my theory that the pelicans believe out of all the young players they could fetch for Davis Tatum is that guy Tatum is the elite player Tatum is possibly a top ten player in the league within the next couple of years. And if the pelicans are going to deal Anthony Davis who was a top three or four player in the league right now, if they're going to trade that guy they want to bring someone back that they feel is elite or at least has the opportunity to become an elite player in the league. They're not gonna trae Davis for quantity quantity. Does not matter. When you're trading atop three or four player in the league. You could throw quantity right out the window. What they're looking for what the pelicans are looking for is quality. And I believe they look at Jason Tatum as that quality piece and Sarah. Spain uses the game of chicken. I would say this sets up a giant poker game with the Lakers. The Celtics in the pelicans LA has to be willing to wait it out to see if the Celtics are actually willing to offer Tatum because of what Davis and his team, and even his father has been saying the last week or so so L A has to wait it out to see if the Celtics have the cojones as to put Tatum on the table, July. Got Ray Allen brought Garnett in he went after Paul George when George said, I only want to go to LA he went after George in new. New Orleans has to be willing to wait to see if they can get them. "Yeah. Yeah. But I remember those days they always had a great team. They could never get a good quarterback though. You know, they had good quarterbacks thing. I've got a great quarterback Roman. Gabriel was good quarterback. John Hagel was a pretty darn good quarterback. They'd get guys after they had Joe name it by age thirty nine and John United States forty James Harris. They had a bunch of Vince took them to the Super Bowl to one time. They've had a bunch of good quarterbacks coach through there. But they've never had a like a top two or three quarterback play for the Rams. Yeah. They give the Steelers a good round for the money. I want Super Bowl. They did. Yeah. But I was gonna talk Sixers here real quick. I've been here. Rumors out there that is Jimmy Butler situations kind of going sour. And, you know, do you think they'll resign him? And it's not what alternatives in the free agency next year. That's a very good question. Couple of things I still think there's a chance you want me to put a percentage on and I'll say less than ten about a five percent chance. The Jimmy Butler could be traded before the trade deadline that the Sixers just decide to go in a different direction. If they really don't think signing him to a max money deal is is something that they want to do the name may try and just get the best trade that they can which would include someone who could still help them this year, not as good a player Butler, but someone who could help them and maybe a future peace and take a quarter step back not a post step back, but a quarter step back, and then have that open cap room going forward. I don't think they trade him for a player who. Still has money left on his deal passed this year. I think they wanna be players in free agency this off season in case they can make a play for Kevin Durant. I think it's highly unlikely but the could opt out of his contract, and certainly our buddy up there in Toronto is gonna hit the market. Whether he stays in Toronto ready goes to LA to be determined. But I think the Sixers wanna be able to take their shots on those guys. Yeah. Yeah. I know I mean like I worked out, but it sounds like his reputation following he's earned it. He's he's he's he's got a lot of diva tach dome. He's really good player. And I think he's been less troubled. And if you asked me the day that he was traded for the Sixers acquired him to Dink Jimmy come in here and be a model citizen. I would've told you no way I said, they'll be issues because they're always issues with Jimmy Butler, and I expected issues and we've had some probably slightly less than what I would have predicted. But I think the Sixers are trying to figure out if Simmons Embiid Butler and moving the other pieces around the chess board around him is going to get them to a championship level. They haven't figured that out yet. Yeah. How about on the Phillies here? We'll quick one last point. If we don't get one of the two big guys any other moves out there. We might be able to make like I mean, it's like no the fans are have you disappointed. But I think we made some good moves. But if they I I still think we need to starting Fisher, I do too. And that's one of the things I'm gonna talk to Matt Brennan about when we get here. They've done nothing in the starting rotation. Nothing. Now Knowle's Nola. I think Ariana will have a better year. He I'm a little worried about him because he felt the need to again talk about the state of major league baseball. And how teams are holding free agents hostage in aren't getting things done. He wasn't happy with the kind of contract, and he eventually signed with Billy's, which by the way was the best contract. He had he came to vote because he's often my best deal. There was speculation at the end of last year that he was going to get a bigger deal and add now that's media pundits and numbers floated by agents. So I don't know if got its hopes up too high, but he wasn't happy with the way free agency played for him last year. And he's been somewhat outspoken. We quotes and social media quotes during this off season. I hope he comes in with the right mindset because I still think he's got game. He can be better than he was last year. He's never going to be site youngest she again, but he can be. Better than he is last year. And I'm sorry. Any anyway. Nikki and. Mr. Athlon are all question marks every single one of them three three question marks. None of them are givens to be above average pitcher pitches this year. So that got Nola given Ariana improved and three question marks. That that doesn't spell and AL East champions to me MAC from brew malls up on ninety four WIP a MAC. Always a pleasure to talk to you. My pleasure. Yeah. And I know you were just chatting with me about the rob, Mattie. But I did actually talk to them. I didn't know it was him that I was talking to on the show the ad. And I leave a message that you're still waiting for a book. No, I got out. He did send it to me. Yes. He did. Yes. I have it. Have you started reading? I have not no, oh, robs a blood, and you or somebody else reached out to and I heard you mention we oughta shouts. I said. Yeah. I gave somebody told me about your book because I didn't send you now. So I sent it to me. I got an Email. Outstanding. Happy for you. Well, hey, you know, you you hit on a lot of stuff a lot of times you speak by conscience. And I definitely want the Rams for two reasons. I like you were saying I can't stand Brady. I mean this nonsense. He went into the locker room to console the losing quarterback yet what he wants when the eagles beat him in the Super Bowl the spoiled little brat didn't even come over and congratulate falls. So that's that's that's one hour right there. And the other thing is there's a lot of people saying there's no way that this youngster is gonna out coach ballot. Check. And I love that. So I want the Rams I want him to really win bad. I hope they win by two touchdowns. That's that's what I want a couple of things. I don't know that I would say the Dougie PR coached him last year. I think it was pretty close to the coaching matchup. But he went toe to toe with him and he wanted to game. And that's all that matters. So if Dougie could come out on the long end score, I think Sean McVeigh could come out on a long ended a score. To and again, I'm not a Brady guy. I give him all his props. I acknowledge he is the greatest of all time, and he's just opening up his lead for greatest of all time. When I started watching football and understood it well enough to have an opinion on who was the greatest quarterback of all time. It was pretty easy with Jani United. I didn't see Sammy Baugh play or anyone prior to that. I only saw United's in the very tailenders Greer. I didn't see him and his prime with the colts. But I did see him play. And he was the for me best quarterback in football for bad twenty five years before that Montana guy won his four Super Bowl without losing one. And he wrestled the crown from Johnny United and for me Montana kept it the entire time until he was supplanted by Brady. So as a fifty year observer of the National Football League I've seen three. Greatest quarterbacks United States into Montana into Brady. A maybe Patrick Mahomes can be the guy who I it's just gonna be so hard for someone to come along and be able to top Brady and topple him from being the greatest of all time. So I think I'm very fair in my acknowledgement of what Tom Brady has accomplished. And where he sits in the pantheon of greatness in history of the National Football League dumb enough to like them. I didn't really like my tattoo. I would never forty nine van. He wasn't as. Annoying. As Brady was I just didn't like Montana because he was that goodness. Forty nine. Kept winning Brady's a little bit more annoying with what he says. And what he does and how he acts. I not a bad guy any stretch of the imagination just annoying. Yeah. I'm not gonna knock him at all. Because he went to shake Patrick Mahomes. Hannity didn't shake walls as he lost the Super Bowl last year. If he chose to stay in his locker room. I'm not gonna say he owed it Nick foles to come over and shake his hand. That's the you know, what that is. That's philly. Super Bowl angst people missing the Super Bowl in town. If they they let that bother him that Brady went over and shook my homes, it's hand tried to make sure he got into the locker room Mattel Melva game kid, and somehow that's turning up his nose at the eagles, twelve months earlier. Yeah, you're suffering through Super Bowl..

"Lot of people out there do not like Simmons. I do you throw in JJ Radic. Boy, Simmons ready. Embiid Butler remains redeem our already I was asked last night too. I think will be with this team into the trade deadline and said, yes. I mean, that's a pretty damn good start you hung around a long time behind the microphone enjoying it. You went to Gus. And then I I taught you were nine and then you weren't done. So what's up? Now, I I think it's kind of insane. It's crazy for the last caller to say that all James harden does a score points. Sorry, you're not watching. He gets like six or seven rebounds a game as a guard. He's third in the league is thirteen assists. Only Westberg Paul George in first team all defender, Robert Covington it more steals per game than him. The guys MVP. Let's not diminish James harden. Yeah. I know. But I wanna make sure Embiid doesn't get diminished in. I also like there's nothing wrong with saying and beads like, I don't know somewhere in the. The five is range of MVP candidates. And I think that's the proper respect to him like. I don't there. Seems to be this national media police out there. People who in my opinion.

"Any? That's what's that. That was McBride used to care about like, he's really following LeBron half, LeBron less money. And now, then he got two point was like, look, I want the most money I could get katie's doing the same on the clippers having to play across. The bronze half came out. Christopher's aren't stick around which six are all star shouldering all the blame for the recent loss to the sound success. Moving onto the Sixers. Would you say about K D got have thick skin? Exact Sixers lost brutal mugging. Onto the Celtics on Christmas day. Joel Embiid had a great game on paper finishing with thirty four points and sixteen rebounds. But the all star not as great a game on the court down the stretch just four shots in the last seventeen minutes and be taught about what went wrong at the end of the game. Like could done all. Being the ball all the body five minutes before thin in Nova, Tom. So in those situation, I gotta show up. But then also I got to be putting the license Tristesse to be able to say man, I wasn't in the license ration-. So. Like, I could have done more. We lost put this heavily on me because I could've all. And the way I was playing on that could go on me. So. A lot of one on one. What would WC Ming on the fourth dribbles? But I kind of find a way to adjust who bad just be myself. I Chris what are the Sixers need to do to get these three. Joel Embiid, Butler and Simmons to all coexist and be successful at it. He makes an interesting point. He had thirty four points at Christmas day games. Only four in the fourth quarter and overtime. They have a problem. And it's that he they couldn't gar him down low. He's absolutely right. I mean, he was just killing him down go to deal. Right. Right. But in down the stretch in the fourth quarter. The problem is that Joel is unstoppable down there. But Ben Simmons can only score in two ways. Either drive in the basketball or he gets a lot of stuff at the real post ups or flashes beneath the rim in that area. And incidates NBA is hard to have two guys to down low. So what they've done is. They put 'em beat out by the three point line. And he's only like twenty something percent shooter from three thirty percent, whatever it is. But they've done that just to stretch the floor. So it is a challenge. This is a team that really is built for yesteryear because none of their big three kit, really shoot. I mean narrow K butlers okay shooting, but none of them are shooters look at all the big three's in recent memory. Ray? The Boston Celtics Ray Allen was a great shooter in Miami. They may buy become a really good shooter. That's how it's done Golden State. Obviously. Right. That's how it is nowadays and San Antonio when they ran through Miami and twenty four teams they had shooters. So I think what they have to do is. They've got a nice big three. They've got to get his might many shooters as they can around which is easier said than done. But I think that's the only it's also why before they had Butler the Belen Elliot's soba dishes at the buyout date last year. We're so key for them because it added shooting to the team. It's one of the reasons why you look at their best three men lineup. The one constant is JJ Renick's in all of them like JJ Radic because. Of the shooting that he adds and being still at this advanced age and knocked down one of the best shooters and basketball. But it is. I mean, I will give credit on this. It's been Simmons problem right now, it's been Simmons. And I don't want to harp on it like we did yesterday. But it's true. He didn't add something to his game. And because of that you're in a spot where you have to ask yourself. Should we try to stagger Simmons in and bead as much as we can have have match have lineups of Butler with Embiid Butler with Simmons have JJ out there? Like do something like that. Because there unless in transition been Simmons's awesome as good as anybody in the league. And I think he is a very underrated defender. But as the game slows down when he and Embiid or both out there. It gets congested..

"Because you're down five and it looks like the seventy Sixers going to steal that game. And then the seventy Sixers do what they do the seventy Sixers in some sense against the Celtics feels like the Steelers against the patriots Steelers beat the patriots a week and a half ago. But it feels like the seventy Sixers are going to find a way to lose like the games tied. They've got a last shot opportunity. You've got Jimmy Butler. Joel Embiid, those should be your first two options either Embiid Butler Butler Embiid instead, what do they do. Ben Simmons a dribble. Handoff to JJ Riddick. I mean, really, that's what you come up with in the huddle a time out. And I think it's just a matter of they see green, and they kind of panic almost at the end of games and bid is fumbling. The ball a bunch of times out of bouncy. Although he had a phenomenal game for the most part. They just they can't seem to close out the Celtics, which that's a legitimate thing. A basketball being able to close out games is huge and Kyrie is soured argue one of the maybe three or four best closures and the game. A mean legitimately one of the very best. You might say he's the best player in the game. We maybe a top three closer question whenever it comes into a situation similar to the Christmas game. And then a game a few weeks ago against Washington Wizards it just feels like if the Celtics are ever in that situation entirely on the bench, and you're just waiting waiting like. All right Brad when you gonna put him back in. It's like, you know, what had this feeling once guy enters the game. He's just in complete takeover mode, and the Celtics aren't really ever out of it. And they have not is going to be okay. Everything's gonna be alright, but you need to have someone else to and it can't just be Marcus Morris. And I love markets more. I think Tatum is starting to come on. That's the key guy here, and then one of the two playing with more conference Hayward or Brown needs to get. Something Al Horford is what he is Al Horford. It's not going to step up and dropped thirty. No. But his presence is helping the steady presence is a comic presence. He's a good rebounder. He's a good. He's does everything he's going to help. River to that. We talk about this all the time in basketball closing and finding guys who can score create their own shot at the end of games is so important, and what the Celtics have lacked over the past few years, especially when Isaiah Thomas was here was did not have a secondary school or they may have a secondary score. I don't know if they have a secondary creator because Kyrie can cry McCain of creating he's making his way. I don't think he's there yet. Okay. He's got to get better. He's making his way he's twenty years old. That's what separates the good teams from the great teams in NBA. You think of the teams like Golden State if it's not curry? Klay thompson. He's not a creator. But he can hit a shots whenever he wants the other two guys can create exactly. Houston rockets. They're not one of the top teams in league right now. But when you play like it, though, recent what do you have a guy? Like James harden, who can literally do whatever you want whatever you want teams like that travel. Soda foul line. Not being fouled. It's okay. The Lakers played with their hands behind their back. Away with so much. But I mean, the Celtics if they really want to join that conversation of teams that can really make some noise in the league, it has to be Kyrie in two other people that you can really rely run. Because if you think about it. Yeah. Philly has Embiid Simmons kind of and Simmons can't shoot he's shot in his career yesterday. And it's because the shot clock went down to one second. He just you're looking weird through. I did. He's the most surprised person the building when it didn't look like a shot at look throw and win is the longest shot in his two year career. That's pitiful. He can't shoot outside the lace petrified to do it. And the thing is when you shoot what sixty percent from the floor sixty percent from the line. Also don't want to drive to the figured out how to play him on defensively they just play. My teams used to play Rondo just completely sag off of him. And if he drives foul him because he is a very difficult strategy drives foulland sixty percent free throw shooter. That's not good. And that's going to be the back his mind, obviously with Philadelphia be Embiid and Butler goes on your two guys, though should be your to closes Butler can create his own shot and Embiid in some sense can create his own shot. Put the ball. But the bottom floor. He's anytime anytime you want it was a huge early in the game Horford was struggling bad trying to cover and stay with a physical mismatch. Chains actually him better than I don't think people realize how big he is Massachusetts. Too fast and could put any dribble it could shoot three's. Now, he's got everything possibly want in a big every twelve for twelve from the free throw line is. Well, I mean he's being compared to Hema lodge one. That's about as. It's a fair comparison. It is not as good as a chemo yet. But e could get there. I mean, he's got all the skills possibly imagined from center any four inches taller seven four two. We saw him on the cover Sports Illustrated last year with J J watt who six six three hundred pounds. JJ watt looked like a child next to him real, and then Jose altuve it was on that. JJ watch grandson. So it was just like the look like the evolution of man like small dude, really huge, dude. And then some guy that's just like a big thing anybody on earth. So that was an impressive win in the sense. 'cause Kyrie Irving did what he did yesterday, forty points. Kyrie spoke after the game about his big Christmas day performance. The responsibility of being a creator out there. Oil is on his team. I think the let the game go to me and just wait for that.

"Apply simply understand fully mortgage confidently. I gotta say that was a very strong sports flash update. Coming into the show. Good presence. Good delivery. Whatever that guy was he did pretty good. He's gone from the studio now, I can't I can't ask him his name. But actually know that that's Anthony the producer of the show. But he he did a a very strong gamma. I've never heard him do that for. All right. Tom to get into the sports talk content of this program. Anybody with Jimmy Butler said last night after the game is how it's so much fun playing with the Sixers because they wanna win. I gotta tell you, man. I'm biased. I'm so biased. But the NBA is just amazing like not only just the on-court product in the superhero stuff. These guys do, but the constant entertainment and drama that goes along with it, though, the big one from this week is the Draymond Katie thing, which we're going to get to in a second, but the Jimmy Butler saga as it's unfolded has just been. And you now have people rooting for the timber wolves to do. Well, because they didn't like the way Jimmy got himself out of their. Meanwhile, he winds up in a situation in Philly that I think is a great fit. I love that move for the seventy Sixers. He's the kind of guy they needed from a competitive standpoint, he's the kind of guy they needed from an ability to get his own shot standpoint, they need another shooter, and they need Ben Simmons to be more than big Rondo they need Ben Simmons to figure out a way to impact the game. When he doesn't have the ball in his hands. But. I'll figure that out as I go along if on them because you starting with Embiid, Butler and Simmons that's a pretty good foundation to work with and for all the talk about Jimmy Butler. And maybe you could get a better better guy in free agency. Or when you're talking about one of the top ten players in the league. And you don't get a chance to acquire them that often. Go for it. And that was what the process was really all about right? It is stacking assets. So that you could get young players who could turn into stars or you would have enough to make a trade for a star. And both things have worked out for Philadelphia. But I just to take notice something. Look at the the NBA scoreboard from last night. Sixers win, right? I just mentioned that tough one with the jazz. But they they wind up winning Jimmy Butler has twenty eight points on fifteen shots rather efficient. If I do say, so myself. Then also you have that great game between the raptors and the Celtics kyri Irving in his bag kyri with forty three points on twenty six shots. Also, mighty efficient even on the losing side, Leonard thirty one points, fifteen rebounds, four assists, three steals. The bucks also win. There's some guy on the bucks. What's his? Oh, yeah. Janas Kubo that guy. Beast and then there's like the pesky Pacers. Right. So you've got. Huge nights from coli Leonard Cairo Irving, Jimmy Butler, Yonathan the bucks win all the depot in the Pacers win. The east is no joke. For all the laughs that have gone at the expense of the Eastern Conference. It's no joke. The east by better than the west. It's Dan close if they're not up top. I think these is better than the west. At the top of the conferences, the west might be a little bit deeper meaning teams eight nine ten eleven might be better in the in the west. But I would take Boston Toronto Milwaukee. And philadelphia. Over Denver and Portland and Memphis in the clippers those are the teams. You guys want to know a secret, you know, the, you know, what these who the second best team in the Western Conference is going to be. The Los Angeles Lakers. We'll get to that also in a little bit as I've been saying all along. Okay. I'm going to say something about it right now. It's in the Nimitz of the. It's a stunning to me. How people still doubt LeBron James and the impact he might have on the team. Look astonishing. The playoff. Yeah. Right. The Cavaliers have descended into the abyss. The Lakers are how many if they wanted to run out foreign robe six or seven something like that. And they're on their way. But the point being the the Eastern Conference is all of a sudden back and. I said it in the off season. I said a little bit last year to the narrative that the gap was so enormous was false though. The Westwood still stronger than east now that you have Jimmy Butler shifting east. You had quiet Leonard shifting east. Of course, LeBron. But with those guys go in there and those teams and Boston on the come up the way they've been Milwaukee. Turning it on showing I guess coaching is more important than people. Give it credit for in in the NBA east is east is back baby. So that's cool. And that's nice to see because those teams are, you know, if you're listening off the the non Golden State teams four of the top five or six come from the Eastern Conference if I'm going to the west the other teams are going to be the Lakers. And and I think the the rockets by you know, now that they're they've rid themselves of Carmelo Anthony. They'll be fine. I feel bad a little bit with the mellow stuff. But I mean kinda is what it is. Ain't it. Part of it was. That they didn't have James harden and. Chris Paul healthy at the same time for a lot of the year. At the. At the same time. Is that though it's not exactly unfair to say Carmelo has been a losing player at this point. Now with the rockets is also just finished that that's the the biggest thing. He he's. Well, past his prime has been for a couple of years now. And I don't know if he plays in the NBA again, I think he may have played his last NBA game. And they figured out quickly that didn't work out. They were trying to see if they could capture something there's a part of me that thinks Mike dantonio really really enjoyed. How this transpired? Because dantonio just did to mellow mellow wants did to Dan Tony in New York. Carmelo. Is no doubt a hall of Famer no doubt in in all time leading scorer. But he's the kind of hall of Famer people aren't gonna feel so great about especially when you you go back and you look at it. I mean, he he turned he helped turned Denver around when he came into the league help turn Denver around, and they had some some winning seasons there after that. It's been mostly downhill. There was one year in New York the fifty four win season when they won a playoff series against Boston. The only Knicks playoff series win of this century. Really of this century. That's the only playoff series. The Knicks have one. Aside from that though in New York. I mean, he ruined insanity. And there was the ladder stretches of his tenure. There goes the Oklahoma City that doesn't work out goes to Houston that doesn't work out and Denver when he left. I mean, I know they got pieces in the trade. But they were just as good as they were before. So. If we're just judging by the the information that's in front of us. I know people are like the pile on and the like and nothing personal. But. I can't tell you with a straight face that that I think Carmelo's a winning player after all that evidence that has been submitted their and the rockets now basically just means they're gonna get back to their identity. What got them to the dance? So in the west, I think it's going to be Golden State the Lakers and the rockets by the end of the season or the top teams. And then the ones I just listed in the Eastern Conference. Now, the big question, Mark. Surrounds? Golden stone surrounds, Golden State. You know, we all know the. It's not such a secret. The team is so far above and beyond. Everybody else. Is the conventional wisdom and. It kind of felt like a March towards the inevitability. You know, they've ruined the league. And all that stuff though, it feels like there's one of those teams in almost every sport. Now, you could easily argue Alabama is more of a shoe in in college football than than the warriors are in the NBA right now. But we we sort of sit there, and we look for anything that could make them vulnerable. And you never wanna root for injury, of course. But that's something that can happen in Steph curry had the groin injury. And I don't I don't think it's a coincidence. A lotta this disarray. That's followed happened after steps groin injury after steps not around 'cause he is ego lists and he's a leader for that team. And he's not there, and all of a sudden total anarchy breaks out. So of all the things that have made the warriors dynasty and even the the current version of the warriors look vulnerable. I'm not sure any have been as strong a case as what's going on between Draymond green. And Kevin Durant right now. Jerry mon- mean imagine being around Draymond on for years at a time. Could probably wear on you a bit just slightly. But there's also what Draymond has brought to the table for Golden State. Steph Curry's their leader, they to leaders Steph is is the leader in the sense of the way, they play the way, you know, they're they're they're selfless. The fact that he was willing to even allow Durant common and not be worried about his shying means stolen. The the the way he. Innovated the game in the sense that that leads into their their offense style at least, and they have another leader who's Draymond who's their emotional leader. Who's the guy who make sure you can you can't call Golden State soft? You can't punk Golden State with Draymond on the team. They can play defense the way they played because demands on the team because he can guard big he can guard small. He's an important cog there. And some of the things he allegedly said while you shouldn't same to Durant. They're not exactly untrue. They did win before. Kevin durant? Got there. They in fact, they wanna championship and they won more games than any NBA team had ever won in history before drank out there. Now when you're dealing with the teammates some of the other stuff. I mean, we don't know the transcript is exactly accurate. There wasn't exactly a Sinaga for their jotting it down. But if the report, and Kris Haines is story are two is to be believed. The wording there. Europe. And you know, Europe, we don't need you. We won without you leave. It's not even you're acting like a stop being a. Stop carrying yourself. Like, no, you are a, and, you know, your a that's things the soul and. Let's just say Kevin Durant. Not the most thick-skinned individual on the planet. Mighty interesting. Is there any coming back from that? If you're Kevin Durant and Draymond green. And the Golden State Warriors. Is there any coming back Europe? And you know, ura. We don't need you. We won. Without you leave damn dreamer. And he come back from that eight five five two one two four two seven eight five five two one two four two two seven at Robin Lundberg on Twitter. That's our L U N D P E R G. It's the Robin Lindbergh show here on CBS sports radio. You're listening to.

"And by the way, the Sixers a terrible wrote to in six heading into this game in Orlando does not a good team. And I would say for the most part up until this point. The Sixers have been an underachieving team. They were nine in six coming into this game. And they should be better than that. The question was what was the rotation going to be like what were they going to do with Jimmy Butler now in the fold Marquel Fulton starting not getting the job done? Well, we got a glimpse of what I guess Brett Brown wants to do Butler starts on a team that goes with three guard set Butler, Rettig and Simmons all started alongside Wilson Chandler. And Joel Embiid. Marquel? Full-scale off the bench. She put he played the most minutes of. Any guard off the bench actually played fairly decent four of six from the field. A points. Do not attempt a three pointer. So, you know, look Simmons allows you to go three guards. And you're not small because Ben Simmons is a massive guard. He's what six ten I mean. He's bordering on six eleven at this point. It's like, he's still growing or something ridiculous. Like that. Jimmy Butler in thirty three minutes. Six of twelve shooting had fourteen points, four rebounds, and two assists. Didn't play particularly. Well, but you know, what it's kind of expected isn't a new situation. New teammates. There's that comfort level. But they're clearly the Sixers clearly we're not comfortable. How do you know? Well, Ben Simmons and thirty one minutes took five shots. So I think Ben Simmons is trying to be the facilitator, I don't think he was that comfortable in terms of what his role is at the point guard. There's so much talent mean Simmons Embiid Butler Rettig. I mean, that's a lot of talent lot of talent. And I think Ben Simmons puts it on his shoulders. As to how to kind of get the most out of everybody else when he's such a force himself. So I don't think for the Sixers to win. Ben Simmons needs to be shooting less like five shots in thirty one minutes. I don't think that makes them effective. So the Ben Simmons probably has the biggest learning curve to make this all work. Joel embiid. I mean, he did shoot. Well, six to twenty but he did have a triple double nineteen points, thirteen rebounds and Tennessee's but the Sixers road woes continued there now to in seven on the road. They fall at Orlando one eleven to one oh six they get out scored by sixteen points in that fourth quarters, Orlando mounts that comeback. You know, it's interesting because it was a one point game in favor of Orlando. Heading into the at halftime third quarters. All Sixers take twelve point lead into that fourth quarter. And then they just give it all up. I mean, they played off. Should they took it a eleven point lead into that fourth quarter? They give it up plus as they get outscored thirty five to nineteen. So while that's happening Minnesota, which is currently playing there's about three minutes remaining timber wolves at home leading the pelicans. And obviously for Minnesota guys getting their new start Robert Covington, fifteen points, six rebounds in thirty eight minutes. And he's a guy that you know, you kind of look and you say to yourself. He does a lot of things pretty well. He's not a great player by any stretch of the imagination. But he's a very good player that understands his role. That's the type of player that you really kinda pull for. Here's a guy that it's been in the league what five years this is year. Number six. He's had to scrap his way into the NBA coming at Tennessee State wasn't drafted played a Cup of coffee with Houston back in two thousand and thirteen two thousand fourteen has an opportunity in Philly after that. And he's just a solid type of players not great done shoot. Very well, he's okay from three point land. But he's scrappy will give you a thirteen point five, six rebounds. He's that type of player play some defense for you as well. So that's what you're getting in Robert Covington. Minnesota Dario Saric to me is that wildcard player because he came in very high. Remember he was a lottery pick out of Croatia. And was drafted by Orlando draft day deal sent the filly did not play right after being drafted, right? I mean, Dario Saric stayed in Europe. For about two years comes to the NBA. He's a decent player. He's not great kind of regressed. So far this year in Philly last year, he made some strides. But that's the guy that people kind of our Bank it on in this trade. I think to wearing the right situation. They believe Dario starch can be a very good player a guy. That's maybe a Danilo Gallinari type dot great. But they'll give you seventeen eighteen nineteen points baby in the prime someone, you know, kind of in that realm. I'm not so sure maybe I'm not as high on Dario Serge's others because I talked to people in Philly. But I think Minnesota's kind of banking on him being that type of player. So in a game that's going down to the wire very close game. The pelicans and the timber wolves in Minnesota Dario Sarge coming off the bench and twenty minutes with nine points and three rebounds getting Covington fifteen point six rebounds in thirty eight minutes so far as Minnesota's looking to win their sixth game of the year. So in the end luck, you're not gonna judge a deal by the first day. I the Jimmy Butler is gone, obviously, take a little bit more time. He's gonna get comfortable. He's a heck of a player. I think the Sixers will be better obviously would Jimmy Butler, but the deal that that that you know, that deal has put a ton of pressure Brett Brown, and I said this when this deal went down. I mean, I don't think Brett Browns a very good coach. I think Brett Brown was seriously exposed last year in the postseason when Brad Stevens ran and coach circles around him in that second round matchup between the Celtics and the Sixers and the post season, and I think for Brett Brown, a, you know, a team that's nine and seven with all that talent. Now, adding Jimmy Butler, the expectations go sky high through the roof. You know Brett Brown doesn't win. What fifty five games of this team doesn't go deep in the postseason if they don't have a postseason series win against maybe a Toronto or a Milwaukee or a Boston? I think Brett Brown is a guy that potentially could be on the way out because I'm not sure he is the right guy for this. I don't know if he is the right coach for all the talent that this team possesses. Seriously. I'm not sure is so Butler makes his debut Covington Saroj make their debuts as the Sixers have now officially turned the page. Go forward with Jimmy Butler, college football kind of a slower week in terms of games. A lot of garbage games. Top twenty five teams conserving themselves that big rivalry weekend. Coming.

"Then the idea of the stew is like the agreements you need to really be fully satisfied if you're tricky. So I'm not some snow soup guy, right? Okay. But like if you're stew is not particularly appetizing, but it's gonna fill you. It's going to be better than just a bowl of water with sodium. I mean, if you're having just a sodium water, sue shonky, Stu actually is an apt metaphor for what the wolves were last year, which is like technically satisfying, deeply frustrating, ways. The ideas that you're going to need probably a four to get through the junkie Stu, whereas you could just like drink the bowl of water. If you're Andrew, Wiggins is minutes is the bowl of water with a little bit of like top ramen seasoning on top, and you're calling that a meal and you're leaving very unsatisfied, Butler's the opposite. You're getting some potatoes. You know, you might be getting outta Keno law, whatever else you're thrown in there. Right. It was a tricky spot. The ten spot was really, really hard because obviously the top ten ranking matters a lot, or you know, relatively compared to the other stuff. It's actually really interesting because they're eight players who are definitely in the top eight. And then it's kind of a roll the dice which injured guide you wanna take on his wrist, right? Whether it's Chris, Paul, Joel Embiid Butler. Paul Georgia's head injuries in the past and then co Leonard, right? That whole group was was pretty tough. I think Butler versus George was a long debate because they kind of play similar positions which just like Butler style play a little bit more more downhill more. You know, drawing the attention of the defense more trips to the free throw line. Just more naturally attuned to life as a number one option. Whereas Georgia's one of the very best number two options in the league and could work with basically anyone. The downside to that is you're making sort of a deal with the devil. If you have Butler on your team where it's like this is Butler's team, right? Trying to play him in a number. Two roll probably wouldn't work out as well. I would have penalised him more for that. Yeah. I mean, I do like I loved Jimmy Butler big. He's not appreciated enough like I was writing MVP for him in January, but he is very much like if Jimmy Butler is on your team, you're playing on his terms no matter what? No, it's it's an issue. It's a known issue. There's no doubt about it, but we also just saw when you are Paul George's team in Indiana. Larry Bird quits drives an IndyCar through New York City because he wants to got there so badly, right? So George much lower than eleven. But again, I feel the case for Butler though is like magnificent impact offense and defensively when he was on the court. I mean, he was among the very best players a real plus minus which shows that impact. You know most clearly when they played with him, they were like a fifty plus when team when they played without them, they were in the thirties in terms of, you know where they would've tracked over an eighty two game season, and he was the major difference for that squad everything you wanna say about Wiggins. Maybe regressing little bit towns was was very accommodating and bringing Jimmy Butler aboard. Teague was just kind of bland. Teague, right? Butler was a heart and soul that team into spite his injury issues. He winds up finishing above George and somebody's other guys in basically every advanced at out there. So he had a very compelling case. I mean, the the weaknesses, of course, are. Multiple injuries, impasse seasons that could come back up. He like much leg Draymond his sort of window in terms of being, you know, like the extended window of how long he's going to be. An elite player is probably shorter than a lot of other guys in this range and then obviously the personality stuff which you mentioned, but he was a soft ten. Let's put it that way like it wasn't like a lock him in at ten. There was a lot of debate around that position and you know what I would add is that that's why like it. I do think the window is limited for Jimmy Butler in terms of how long he's going to be elite and he is right now..

Joel Embiid Butler Paul George Paul Georgia Teague Wiggins Draymond sue shonky Larry Bird Stu New York City Indiana MVP IndyCar Andrew Leonard Chris Paul
