"They are the co hosts of the knuckleheads podcast Quentin Richardson and Darius miles. The fellas just celebrated their 100th episode as podcasters. They had Vince Carter on for the occasion. Their show is always excellent. They get incredible guests. Everyone from Shaq and doctor J to Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Derek Jeter, Sue bird, if you are not already subscribed to the knuckleheads podcast, I encourage you to go do so. You can find it on all the usual platforms. We had a great time reminiscing about their start in the NBA with those early 2000s clippers, a super talented and young squad that was so much bigger culturally than competitively. That era was really only two years if you count the time that Darius miles was there before he was traded. So his two seasons didn't have a winning record, didn't make the playoffs, but they were young and brash, and fun as hell, Dan Lamar Odom, and Elton brand, Corey McGee, and of course our guys Quentin Richardson and Darius miles. And they just kind of captured the imagination. There was there was a moment. There was a clippers moment. It was fleeting, but it was there and it was really fun. It was really enjoyable to go back down memory lane about all that. That is also, of course, the team that spawned the iconic two fist taps to the head celebration that you've seen Q and Darius do or if you weren't there, go find it on YouTube. There's plenty of footage. That's of course how these guys came to name their show, the knuckleheads podcast, where did that gesture come from? What does it mean? It was a mystery for a very long time. They will explain. We also hit on a bunch of other topics, including Dylan Brooks, flagrant foul of Gary Payton the second the other night was the play dirty just reckless, both Q and Darius had a very strong opinion on the matter. Before we get to all that, a quick reminder, please rate review, subscribe to the crossover wherever you get your podcasts and hit me with all your feedback on Twitter at Howard Beck. Okay, my.

"Beef right now with the sixers already know what this dude is about. We already know what to do. This is not as known do is upset with the fact that he didn't get better if you look at the thing if you think about the organization and where we've come from where the sixers have actually come from from the start of the process to right now. Think about it. I a sip. Technically has gotten a little bit better. Management has gotten better. You're talking about dr maury. He's on the bus out gotten better. Elton brand is better than what we ever had right better than to angelo and he only knows who's games so it's gotten better be the players have gotten better. Everything around. this guy has gotten better everything. Ownership has gotten better management has gotten better. Glares have gotten better. Everything is trending up. Cobb does not training upward. It's twenty four right so even come up with these things. And but him the brain these narrows up and for us to see over time and overlooking the fan base. What i'm saying that's what we've done over time. Just is really unacceptable behavior. This goes back to you. What it you got. That are too young. Understand the who for what we got. Ricky waters out real quick. No behoove. what this is all about you. And we're told him a valuable lesson a play. That's like that for who for what we in this thing going to bleed. Green your kid rock here. He felt the booze but guess what he did. He went to work. Want to fucking work and we wound up loving to love the guy first game rookie. Water came across the middle of game against tampa bay. I can't remember. I believe it with the guest. A he he aggregate On a short slip past like he was going to take a little bit of a sack but it was in a critical moment in the in the quarter and he came up on the podium after getting a historic deal for running back leaving san francisco winning super bowls. They're he's coming here at the star because that's when he went to be in san fran and that was going to happen. It's guys like steve. Young joe montana. You know what i'm saying. He wanted to the stop. He comes here to be we. We give them star. Martin make the star plight and he comes out who i go next. I go into my career taught that way. What we we ripped barbecue with a waters for who for what come on you know to the games and let me up the front remorse fried chicken everybody all gleaming turn to sacrifice of sports it. Let's get entertainers but one was what we watch. Entertainment right. people sacrifice their tom the interest their families their money packets sacrifices attainment. We all have an invested interest in this thing. That's a fans means something. We have a best interest in this joint. And the payback return on investment on exterior. We get nothing. Monetary most people who don't have a direct related to over income up surrendered was had no impact on this joint return on investment. That we live to sports. We only get through wedding. We haven't invested interest. Say for for what you feel disrespected but ward is dead. What is the fucking work. I think he had three consecutive like thousand russian seasons. He had a cup. He w have three seasons amongst the league. Leaders in total yards from scrimmage was awesome. He was amazing. We weren't a great team but guess we every week waters. He went to work and every week teams try to set down the first thing they got shut wars. So don't give me a things don't mean shit stuff. I'm trying to hear it now. i'm not. I'm not i'm harlem fans. I'm hardly i think most majority of fans fuck they taught about up there. Watch the game. They and they don't even know what they only know. Watch because not chances are fucking play and if they did put it wasn't good so all cool. I'm not mad.

"Don't each other at to our knowledge it's more of just. There's kind of this this this just divide. There's just there's just a chasm between the and it probably doesn't matter again. They've won a high level and could continue winning at a high level or even a higher level depending on things like roster construction and whether ben simmons would evolve his game so it's it's not even like there are times when there is feels like a simmons versus embiid thing. But i don't really feel like that's the crux of all this. I should point out to because there is. There is an organizational responsibility here. Also if not for the winning which is a big thing to put aside we would we would have been talking about. This is one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the league. Up there with the kings and the knicks. And whoever else you wanna throw in there the minnesota timberwolves another one. Sam hinkie spent three years at the front office. He's thrown overboard for bryan colangelo. Who spends two years there then. We have this weird moment of elton brand. But it's elton bread and brett brown and it's this power sharing and there's all these voices and we don't really know who's in charge then it becomes. It's elton brand for two years. And then it's daryl morey but still they're like for the last five six years there have been a lot of turnover and just ambiguity. And just general weirdness with their front office that counts for something to and play some background role in this. I think the lack of consistency a lack of clear authority changing voices. All the time doesn't help up sorts. Leads me to this question. Let me actually back for second level. You'll get with this question this question..

Not more covers the nba for the exit network here on the progressive gets line. Matt matt peralta aria going. Well man we're day all of a sudden. What are the timber wolves doing. It's a little late to fire the gm. No yeah it's very late Ryan mcdonagh was like open the son about the same brush amount the same kind of rough window. it's interesting because this is one of those where i was like. Wait what how is this happening. And then i reached out to various people. And they're like. Oh yeah thanks. I've been there for a while and it was like he couldn't give me a heads up They apparently this has been simmering in that. There's just like it's not a good work environment. I don't know there's going to be more about any sort of incident like the language used in the press. Release on top of by the way misspelling. Their own team name was not great in terms of they didn't thank usually you see like why. Thank on for everything that he's done everything that he's he's brought to the organization there was none of that it was just like we let him go or committed winning that. Thanks for coming and so a very weird situation. There's going to be. I think more coming out about this I think it's too early to speculate. This is related to the bentham and talk this ring. More like larger issue that goes beyond a single decision interesting. Twenty three wins last year for minnesota and on twitter carlin's towns just wrote w t.f. So what does this say to the team right before. Camp opens the gm's out chaos discord confusion. You know the things that you love. Or your franchise started be experiencing in year seven when you're probably gonna start hearing trade demands in the very near future like it's just a weird situation mean part of it trying to parse out very strange because if you by letting go rose us you have to pretty much feeling with interim guys and all in the interim guys are roses people most part And if you're not happy with the way that he approach things with a very analytical kind of Approach in mind. There's already been a report from jake fisher bleacher report that they are looking. They're interested in adding. Elton brand from the sixers which is a non analytical approach. Right you go down that road. Everyone left in in minnesota are all analytics focus people..

That may be whereas today That may not be where he's tomorrow you know you just don't know save and that's why we just gotta keep communicating and see what we can take this but you are right. It's for years left on his contract. It's in our hands. Would that be said your expectations. I know what your hope is. But what are your expectations for. Ben simmons this year with philadelphia to get them back and once we get back in the fold can get to work if that doesn't happen. I don't have an expectation. Because i don't know where we go. That is to you know that that will happen if it happens. But right now it's still part of this team. And i'm going to focus on that part of this. Daryl morey does an executive with this organization. "Just barren davison. Elton brand in two thousand seven. Well you know it's different points in my career that that one was crazy with barron Going to the clippers and what we thought l. l. brand was going to remain with the clippers. Recruited recruited barron right then went to philadelphia right then. Went to philadelphia. Saw stranger ones. I was twenty seven at the time doing that deal. So you know it's it's a lot different when you're twenty seven and in some ways still green just in terms of life experience compared to being you know where i'm at now at forty one and in in handily. Multiple deals over a free agency period for me again. It's doing all of the homework before having those targets. You know my client's going into any contract year are being educated on what they have to do in that season to potentially reach a mark. That is maybe a goal for them. You know financially in that free agency period in the following year or following summer. So for example thomas brian Kevon looney are free agents next summer right and i think they'll have great market value next year. I don't wait till we go into those months leading into free agency to sit them down to talk a while a talk about what their potential market value may be. That's already being in some ways. Dictated by the jared allen signing maybe this year or even john collins signing so you already have cops being established this year so for me. I'm sitting down with my clients. Educating them to say hey by the end of next season at the end of this contract year your report card better say x. If you're expecting the outcome of x. Right because if they're perceived value for them is you know twenty million dollars annually. But there's potisk say something otherwise than we have a problem next year right so for me. It's always about being proactive opposed to reactive. Sending them down. educating them. In as the season progresses is talking to them because the last thing i want is for them to get caught up in hearsay or locker room. Talk about oh. I'm better than this guy or i should be getting x. y. z. When the reality is all you know. I've done the market analysis. We've done the homework. And we know the factors that are dictating. Next year's market could impact. My free agents is making sure that they have that information in real time so. The expectations are managed You know in this case next. Offseason and in some ways were exceeding expectations as an agent or at agency for our clients. So you do all the homework as as your job your diligent about it all you try to prepare as much as you can. But there's no predicting for instance again in two thousand seven. Elton brand is going to recruit baron to the clippers thinking. We're gonna form this really potent team. And then have elton turn around and go the curve balls do happen. That one's a really unusual one right. We've rarely rarely seen a verbal agreement during the moratorium and then a change of mind change of heart with at the end of the day. Howard bear the a win. Look it didn't work out the way we wanted. Barron got seventy million and five to go back into that market. The warriors under the previous ownership was not gonna pay baron. They just were not and a lot of things had to happen..

"I later after this happened in the story started to leak out people would say to kobe. How close did you come to joining the clippers. And he would always say. I seriously considered it. But that's as far as he would go. Yeah but i remember the first time. The lakers played the clippers. That and the lakers and coby walked over to donald sterling and shook hands with them and i think thanked him for just say. Thank you for making me that offer. I think the lakers are home. And it was dr who convinced him of that and i think less lesser owner doesn't interrupt his vacation doesn't necessarily get on the phone and doesn't have the life experience that dr bus had to talk koby indistinct and i've always thought that that was one of michael calls. Jerry buss the greatest donor in the history of team sports and one of the reasons that you talk to people when you hear them talk to about dr buster was up. There was an old friend of the bus family that passed away today. A great sports innovator in a guy who he dennis started the aba. he was in his nineties. He had lived as grateful life. But we lost from this morning and and dennis was among the people that said this that jerry buss head so much life experience that he was comfortable in any room he be comfortable playing poker with a bunch of security geyser janitors or he could be comfortable dining with the heads of fortune five hundred companies and he had a life experience in a way of explaining things that made. It seem simple remain. I know you interviewed him. I was lucky enough to have several conversations with him but he just had this ability. Whatever room he was in to adjust to the crowd. And i think he convinced kobe that the lakers were the brand that he wanted to tie his legacy to and the minute that that broke would break up. Kobe was just another player but when he was the face of the lakers with his talent and with his greatness he could legendary. And if you look at devon booker sneakers in the finals. That's kobe told booker. Yeah don't just be a good player. Be legendary booker before finals. Game right on your shoes be legendary because he wants to remember the vice. Kobe game and i'm telling you folks seventeen years ago today. Dr bus saved kobe from going to the clippers morona. You knew kobe pretty well to heat. Once he made up his mind. It was really tough to talk him out of anything. Yeah you're right. And he really and i remember doing a story. I was like a young reporter at the daily news. And i remember howard beck was our beat writer at the time really really good and he taught me a lot of things and he goes well known. I'm really sorry you have a really tough assignment. K with the all star game. He was taking the first media. Day off he goes. I'm about to write a story and it's going to totally make your day tomorrow. Suck right. i'm to write that. Kobe plans to opt out of his contract. And you're gonna have to go ask him and everybody else about it and nobody believed that. Kobe would really do that. And that he would be a free agent but he really dissatisfied with where the laker organization was going. Remember that he was like. Are they going to choose me or shock he wanted. He wanted everybody to work as hard as he did. And it was just never going to happen. Yeah he he wanted to cut of his own team you know. He kind of became enamored with everything. That's going on. And i think you know with the clippers right. They had a really good young team at the time. Corey getty was on those teams. Elton brand those cotin a very good meeting that had koby genuinely interested and i remember when he decided to stay. It was kind of like a c- told you with me but it was really touching. Go there for a while. And i will say this like so much. A why co we became who he is alleged. Legendary status is because he's kobe k. But another part of it is that he played twenty years for one franchise and in this day and age. That's a really big thing and i know. He saw michael in the wizards years in like that. He's really cognizant of what His legacy was. So it's kind of like marriage. John like my mom told me this one. I thought it was really good advice. Okay she goes. I have a lot friends who got divorced in their forties or whatever you know they they lose the thrill of the mayor the honeymoon's over right and they get bored. You know some has its fighting to get divorced and all that but but a lot of times they just kind of like if you stick it out and you kinda like told together in that marriage like there's something really nice about spending your whole life with someone. There's something really wonderful about a lifelong relationship. That actually stuff that you worked through all the board times that weird times of ad. Time trait of. Why kobe's with lakers so good like it's it's really. He had some really bad times. they're really i think one of the things. Dr bus probably told him his look at the people who have had the title face of the franchise. Yeah they're all immortal right. It's kareem abdul-jabbar. it's magic johnson. It's jerry west shaquille o'neal and now it can be you. it can be kobe bryant. And there's a very short list of people who've had that on their resume face of the lakers. If you look at the year they moved here it was elgin. Baylor jerry west kareem magic and then magic candidate the and coby and.

"You've got that situation it worked out. It worked out for everybody. You went there one ring you know. And then he gets to the clippers and you're like okay we know we're signing up for something that's a little bit different here but i think he makes it excessive. I don i you know. I don't know if it's just a massive distrust. i know it sounds old and lame to a younger generation. But i still believe in kind of the team before yourself thing a little bit. I would imagine more younger media members that that's stupid I'm not saying that it's a player. You just post to like follow. The teams orders every single time. But i don't like he's still gonna get all his money probably but at point. Do you think it's actually like hey. Could we be a little bit more on the same page here or is that just impossible with hawaii because honestly i'm not a huge fan of it. Even though i think he's in understand gradients there seems like a big trust. Going back to the spurs the raptors as we said it was very very. They left him alone. Same thing with the clippers. This is a real issue though that if he had an injury that happened a month ago. And now it's the partial tear which is basically treated like the full tear. So you're talking. Ten eleven months for the recovery well wherein mitchell i now that takes us to and to march april ranch which will be in the playoff start next year there that means there six seven eight seed best case scenario. They're not gonna have him then when he comes back. He's not to communicate with them. Who will be on his own timetable. he'll be on his own recovery timetable to i would say it's more likely he just doesn't play next year. 'cause fruit what we've seen from him he doesn't like playing he's he doesn't he doesn't want to risk it. He doesn't want to get hurt and he wants to play in his own pain timetable. So now we're looking at. I think it's pretty safe to say i i. I don't think they're full fledged cross off next year. But i think you can cross them off pencil when you think like the words. I'm going to be way better next year. The lakers are gonna do stuff. We're going to have the sons. I think are gonna be in a better place. They're going to bring everyone back. Denver murray should be backed by march range. Luca dallas Not sure what's going to happen with that. But you going down the line and it's like i just don't see a scenario where one of the best sixteens so futile emmy thirty seven seater and eighth seed or maybe even in the plan tournament with kuwait. Coming back from an acl thing to me. That's across off across them often pencil. But it's still across off and my point here is all the stuff they gave away for this guy. This'll be three years where they got within You know two games of getting at around two. And that's gonna be the legacy of this team classic clippers. It's just this is why the they just had the worst luck of. I think anybody. I don't even know what number i remember. i did. The curse of the clippers piece when blake griffin got drafted for page to back when my fingers wirtz and blake griffin like. I'm not afraid of a curse and not afraid of the clippers. And i wrote a whole piece about. You actually should be afraid of the clippers and here are the reasons why and a had a paragraph in their of all like the knee. Injuries guys in the clippers have had and it was like some of the best players you know some of the highest lottery picks of two generations and Dany manning on on all of them got hurt and now co is another one Elton brand has this career year. Are you know right before. I wrote that piece. He blew out his achilles. Blink gets drafted rookie evans excited. He gets hurt. He misses his rookie year. But it's just like i this franchise and the luck. They've had is really really remarkable. And you know we're there's going to be three years. They were all the pics. I gave up where they got nothing at all. And how about the contract part of it. Because he's got a deadline in his player option for thirty six million. I think the very beginning of august in so part of you would say well. Now he's just going to go ahead and pick that up or would he decline it and asks for the four year extension but the differences be picked up the player option. Then he can sign a new five-year. Max which is like two hundred forty million. Would you give that honestly. Would you give him that. He had knee issues now for five years probably now. He's just has an acl injury on top of it on top of all the other stuff which we don't even know how bad it was. I know the easiest thing is to say no way you can't do that and it's like okay. Then what's your plan. Then what's your plan. And i honestly like he scares the shit out of me now at this point and the fact that it's like hey we're going to give you two hundred forty million. Can you give us any kind of fucking heads up about anything right. Okay like it can we but the thing is it's not even worth losing any sleep over because he's going to do it he's not going to operate that way and you just.

"Around column on monday just about where things stand with. Nba hiring and gm's and coaches and focused a little bit on the mavericks but there now as of this taping ten black head coaches in the nba. There are still some things that can happen right. Nate mcmillan does not have a permanent contract yet with atlanta. Guys could happen if that doesn't happen well being seen right but still i'm just i'm just noting for the record assuming mcmillan's extended as he should be as as we would expect assuming nobody else gets fired. Among those ten there will be at least ten on opening night of twenty twenty one twenty. Two and they're still three vacancies left in new orleans. Washington in orlando which means it could climb even higher. I pointed out. Chris because the nba has been lagging on hiring black head coaches for years. Now they hit all time high of fourteen back in. i think it was twelve. Twenty twelve thirteen the next year dipped to twelve. And then it's been in single digits ever since as low as six sometimes in the seven eight range. It's usually averaging around seven so there are ten right now could even go up still and imported know for couple reasons. One finally reversing. The trend is starting to climb again to in the bubble last year. Of course after there was the wildcat strike and the players and the league came together to discuss any number of issues regarding race both within and outside of the league one of the things as far as league policies or league issues was was. We need to see more effort to elevate black gems and black head coaches in this league and they'd been lagging in both places they're doing pretty well in both places right now nico harrison of course reportedly going to going to be the gm in dallas. And that will mean. There are six black head of basketball operations at the team level right now. I'm not counting guys. Like like. Elton brand is number two in philly to daryl morey right trailing does number two so some gm's are almost like th they're more like the number two because some teams go team president and then gm but there are six six heads of basketball operations right now in this league. That are african american. That also is one of the higher numbers that we've had in the last fifteen years so there seems to be some steady progress on both fronts. And i just think which appointed out because it's been awhile since we could say that we can maybe see fred. Vinson get the job in new orleans. I know he's a candidate for that. Schmos lee now that he's not going to get the mavericks job. Orlando i know as interested in talking to him so that number like you said could grow. Let's let's touch on quickly before we go to the teams that up people. You mentioned the maverick. Let's start there. You wrote a little bit about them as you said what do we make of dallas. Kind of revamping. The donnie nelson rick carlisle franchise in the nico harrison and jason kidd mold. Now i mean i think a lot of people most people i would say. No idea nico. Harrison was before this past week longtime nike executive. As a great relationship with players. Many players across the league gets his first chance to be a top basketball. Executive has been pursued howard in the past by other teams for basketball operations roles. He has declined them each. What do you think of nico harrison as the top basketball executive and jason kidd. The former maverick. Now the head coach in the case of nico harrison so you know. He played division. One ball you know..

"A mess. Okay, Have a big story. All right. This just got sent to me. And this is from a June origin of ski. This is from the legendary. Whoa! Judge. Discussions on Philadelphia 76 ers All star Ben Simmons, Future with the franchise started in Chicago this week. Included Simmons, agent Clutch Sports CEO Rich Paul and six years management. Paul again, the agent met with the president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and the GM Elton brand at the predraft combine to begin evaluating the next steps. And Simmons six years career. All engage the Sixers on whether it makes sense to work together to find a trade before the start of next season. No request was made, and the sides are expected to continue talking ahead of the July 29th NBA draft and August free agency. Simmons. 24 has four years and $147 million left on his contract. The rest then goes into a lengthy description of all the struggles that he had in that series. But again, here's the story from WHOA. Conversations have begun between the Sixers and Ben Simmons representation about whether or not it makes sense for him to be moved the way Whoa just describing it. The SIM inside the agents brought up whether or not it wouldn't be in everyone's best interest, but have not demanded a trade. Ambrose is a Philadelphia sports fan. Your reaction? I can tell you first, certain that a vast majority of fans inside Philadelphia never want to see him play for the 76 years again, though it's not fair to ever blanket 100% of the blame on any one person for anything, especially something as big as losing a playoff series. This image is the one that's going to have to bear this for the 76 years. There's no question about it. He has lost the city new know your thoughts is this Is it the right thing for the Sixers the trade away Ben Simmons, knowing they will not get Anything in compensation that rises to Italy with his stature in the NBA general, he is I do think it's the right thing for them to just divorced each other. Let me ask you this, and I know it isn't on the list of options because they're not trading him to the Knicks. But if I told you right now, the Knicks could get Ben Simmons. Trying to think of what a package would include. It would have to include Julius Randle. It's going to include a lot of the they're going to probably want a bunch of their young players and their picks or something of that nature. Would you do it? I would actually you want you want Ben Simmons. I do think Ben Simmons in a different environment, uh, would or could work. So here's the thing. I'm a little worried about Simmons in any Harsh environment now because what happened Obviously, Philly is the worst place. What happened was so public. I mean, it was so visible that while I think there'll be an element of the fan base that will be really excited and wanting to welcome him with open arms and make them feel as good about himself as possible. I also think they'll be quick to turn I also think they will be the groans in the building. Every time he passes up one of those shots, and I think he needs to go to a a level a place where the pressure is a little lower The lights are a little dimmer. I think that would be the best thing for him, whether they can figure that out or not. That's a big story. It's been really fun today. Thanks for hanging out. Enjoy the UFO's See you tomorrow. ESPN.

That's insane you could show and show up but you don't say anything. what are we doing. How do you even enforce that. No now see now. You can't you can't do that because you have to actually speak you're allowed to speak for vaccinated the point a quiet place. Somebody's gonna come out like one of those classes. You're gonna come out actually. Open your mouth golf. It's going to stay quiet. Sixers could had jason tatum. Okay in in this whole thing was the matter gave up jimmy. They coulda had if if the sixers offer orlando straight up. Simmons from fault orlando says no. That's how bad. Ben simmons is a personal you're nuts. They wouldn't say they absolutely would say now nine untradable. Here's gonna take him on issues on tire over bro career over he wants his career is over. Even a doctor. Heard like elton brand should leave fired. Just blow up the spectrum. Get rid of it. It's over a spectrum of horses. Climate up greece loopholes. "There He is great work by detail. We were talking, Tom, you and I about about Carlisle and I think on the face of it. He gets the job that he wants. He gets whatever job he wants. I will say this about Boston because it's an interesting fit. Really interesting fit for Rick Carlisle. I think there's a maybe Brad Stevens is going to operate like a normal like a normal GM. And he'll be very predictable and the things that he does and will be, um, will be in line with what one might might project. I do, though, think there's a chance it goes a different way. Brad Stevens came from college. It's highly doubted by his by his peers. Many of his peers did not think you'd be successful. He didn't come to the normal coaching club and most people that have success. Believe that their path because it's their path. Offer some real wisdom into the keys to success. I make that mistake. We all make the mistake. The reality is just because you were successful doesn't mean your path is the way to do it. But Brad Stevens Is very possibly inclined to think that you need to think outside the box more that there is coaching talent out there. That's under appreciated that the normal route to being a head coach in the NBA isn't the only route because because he took a different journey. So I'll be interested because car allows the obvious choice is the obvious choice. I just don't know if Brad Stevens is it Take the obvious choice kind of guy. Okay, that said the place and I think actually makes a lot of sense. The fit that I think would be incredible. Is Philadelphia. The problem becomes you say to me, Bill? Yes. What's up, honey? There. There. They got a coach. They do. Do you have a coach? They do now, Do they have a coach? They still have a chance to win an NBA championship this year, right either they're in a bad spot. Their best but blowing back to back 18 point leads. Um, what's the word? I'm looking for? A good I'm really articulate. I'm really good at this radio thing Got into the right business. It ain't good. But they can still do it. That said that they don't let me give you some facts. Here's a few points of, um perspective and context. One. I don't think it matters that Doc Rivers is in the first year in in Philadelphia. If you decide I've already decided doesn't mean everyone else has doesn't mean Daryl Morey has but have one Daryl Morey were to decide or you Philly fans. That docs, not the guy. He doesn't matter. Is there a year? Same was true for Stan Van Gundy. He gone David Griffin is not good at hiring head coaches. The GM of of the pelicans. He is good firing them. I mean, you gotta have it right, right. He's got a half of it, right. The other has kind of important, But you can you can make that move. It's also true that Daryl Morey, the not even the G on the president of operations, did not hire did not hire Doc Rivers. Right? Elton Brand hires Doc Rivers and then in a shocking move Billy hires Daryl Morey over Elton Brand. It's an awkward setup. And Elton Brand's handpicked head coach has not worked brands the GM John Morris, his boss, Doc Rivers, just friendly reminder. Uh, here's what Dark coach playoff teams have done. Uh, three of them. Three are three of the 13 in NBA history to blow through one series leads he has blown 632 series leads in his career. And how does that apply to Philly? Do you say Well, the trend continues. In a way he has given up back to back. 18 plus point leads this postseason, including the 26 point or the other day on the verge of losing to the Atlanta Hawks. I like the Hawks. Have been on the Hawks. They shouldn't be Philly and in the last two postseasons, so this one and then with the Clippers, his teams are 11 and five went up by 16 points or more. The rest of the N B a 76 3. It's not rocket science. Is that right is that's not good. He's not good in the postseason coaching basketball, which last I checked is sort of an important part of the job. So I think Rick Carlisle makes a lot of sense in Philly. I think New Orleans is an interesting job. Mean there is talent there. Normally a guy like Carlisle. Normally would wait because it's you don't usually have a lot of great jobs that are open. Because if it was a great job, there would've been success and there was success. The previous coach would not have been fired that that's kind of the way that that that goes down. However. Portland's interesting I I think it's I don't think it's the job people going to run because it's hard to bring more talent, but Damian Lillard's amazing The guys is an absolute superstar. Boston's I think is a great It's obviously it's obviously a great job. It's a great job. Because you've got talent there. And I think New Orleans is a really, really good job because as Ion and Brandon Ingram and very quickly Kemba Walker, I guess I have to get to it later. There's just so much going on, but it's an interesting salary dump. I mean, what the trade is this? The thunder Man. I don't I'm not as impressive Sam Presti as other people. Because he didn't manage Harden. Durant. And Westbrook effectively. But the guy does know how to bring in graphics like he really does, And he's on track to be GM of the year. You know, executive the year in 2031. That's exciting. Here's what Here's What? Here's what he got. In return. He got Camba. Someone's gonna make 37 million this year. Kimball also has a player option the following year, so figure it's really if Campbell wanted to be two years and $72 million. That's a lot of money. So thunder get Kumba. They get Boston's first round pick this year. This upcoming draft that's number 16, and they get a, um, a second round pick in 2025. The Celtics get Al Horford. Moses Brown in a second round pick and in 23, by the way, Horford is actually I went. Look this morning. My thought, watching the NBL. A lot was he's the same guy has been the last three or four years, so he's Fine. He's good. He's fine. He's actually it'll better per 36 minutes, actually, like, interestingly, been better because he's been on bad teams. So my point is when you give the minutes and when you let the the ball run through, the more you ask them to do more, he can do it. He's a nice piece. He's a nice piece. Is that a bomb? Moses Brown 7172 Kids out of U. C L. A young player for Thunder played twenties to 23 minutes a game, but his per 36 minute numbers right if he played an entire game were 15 and 15. He's interesting player. But it's a salary dump. It's what it is. It just speaks to the way in which Campbell did not fit and did not work out in Boston, and I don't know what the thunder are going to do. I don't know what Sam Sam press he's gonna do. You could keep camper. And you could pair him with With Shay. Guilders. Alexander the the way that you did Chris Paul or you can decide It's not going to be good for SGS development and you can turn on and flip combo somewhere else for a bunch of picks, which is, my guess is what's going to happen. That is my guess. And for Boston. I think they think it's going to be addition by subtraction of a kind. Because camera just wasn't happened. That's two point guards you have come in and who have been unhappy. Alright 855 to 1 to four CBS Twitter Sports Writer Sports R E I E or talk from Joe mixing in a moment, not a fan of Joe mix ins. "Super bouncy vertical athlete or anything but he was long and sometimes just having long dudes who aren't going to get killed on the primer matters. I honestly don't have anything to say about evan. Turner defense i prepared everything about holiday inn iguala essentially this. I mean it's biased. So you have to take it with a grain of salt. But i'm pretty sure steve. Kerr has listed. Andre iguodala is being wanted premier perimeter defenders like the last thirty years. And i think that would dollar said that drew holiday was basically a defensive player of the year level caliber defense. I don't think either of those are quite true. I think it would allah. Yeah in washington inside. But they're fantastic. I don't think they're both defensive player of the year level. But they were both you know. Premier perimeter defenders. Yeah in watching drew in that series like he gave ray allen problems I'm here was on like he was kinda funny because in watching drew play a current game yesterday. Just it's kind of startling. How similarly he's playing offensively than compared to now he's not laying off at all. He's right on top of you. It just a suffocating defender and showed through in using credible I actually thought out of all the defenses that i that that that we walked in we talked about if you drop the seventy sixers defense in today and obviously you're not starting spencer hawes at least i hope not Say you have elton brand out there and you put that at the four. Because that was her sixth man that you're actually no They were weird because they just played like. They played like ten guys but they gave the bench fad. Played like twenty three twenty four minutes a game in a second. Most off bench louisville was their leading score off the bench that you're actually and just leading scorer in general and let's say But like that defense would hold up better today than i think. Any of the defenses that we watch except obviously the twenty twenty teams. No that's a good point because they just don't have the dinosaurs for lack of better term in a in the center but also major shout out to rookie fitch on the bench there. Yes he actually started. Fifteen games that your. I'd forgotten that and going back through stuff because spencer hawes got injured for some time so started fifteen games but then he ends up getting traded in. What is always the bynum deal. He just trading in the bynum d twelve deal. I always forget the that was part of that and going arlando But yeah that team. Their their defense is fun to watch like audrey. Your dala andrew holiday making rotations together with thad young out. There occasionally like i don't i. It's the kind of thing where it's like. I know that they weren't going anywhere. Which i don't always agree with. I mean think about that. If you keep jrue holiday with andrea dolls twenty eight twenty nine at this point thad. They're not a great. Maybe you get somebody. I don't know. I'm i just figured out how fun that defense would be to wash me. 'cause like we're looking at this defense right now i i instead of typing things into an exile sheet like normal human being. I write everything down and my own. It looks terrible This sixers team ninety nine point two defensive rating which was five point four relative. They actually did it..
How Joel Embiid Became An MVP Contender
"Also derek. Last season ended in pretty disappointing. Fashion for philadelphia. That'll do it. The boston celtics move on by defeating the seventy sixers. Four games to nothing. The first ever went wrong in that first round against boston for embiid and the sixers. I think a bunch of things went wrong. First of all. You can't start without saying this. Ben simmons zone. Outside of that sort of what went wrong was wrong with the sixers all year. The team didn't fit well yet. Al horford and josh richardson. Who were tough it's around a post op center and embiid. Richardson shooting for three ended out. They didn't have a real reliable second often times during the series alec. Burks was your secondary options on offense recipe. Brad stevens and the celtics and bead romeo leg for the rookie thinking about double vacates birds. Who can't make them pay. So there is a lot of mistakes that were made roster building and there were missing. Simmons isn't it was a tough series for sure. Can you remind us what the narrative was after that first round exits surrounding joel embiid and his performance. Yeah it was fascinating because on one hand when they came back into the bubble they had spent pretty much those months in between working with you all to get better at handling dull teams and it came out in the bubble in orlando during the seeding games and some of that had started to show and he looked like he was handling double teams better and he came out against the celtics. And i think that he converted back a little bit in terms of struggling with the double team and bead backing down ties gordon hayward on the help and they come up with the steel but he was dominant as an individual score. That was locked off and be. Did it again. Safe focused joel. Fb five of seven. Give him thirteen of his team's thirty one. We'll lifesaver on that. So i think a lot of people looked at you made steps. He did most of what he could do individually. He just didn't have enough help around him. Well that disappointing end to a long season led to a number of changes within the sixers organization. Can you take us through. Some of the moves that philly made in the off season and how they related to unlocking the better performances from joel. Embiid is off the front office. Obviously brought daryl morey To work above. Elton brand and then they brought in doc rivers replace brett brown and then you had some pretty key addition to traded al horford for essentially danny green. And then josh. Richardson for steph curry. And i think those two editions have been pretty big with joel. Because i think if you look either trade you'd say the sixers got the lesser talent but the fit and just having to players in curry and green. Who the other team can't leave has been huge for. Joel shoe autom- double wall and pass. And you miss accomplish you. Miss a lot of shots You just straightening and then you start thinking of all you gotta do everything by yourself. 'cause everybody's not made the shots. Richardson horford they were not only inconsistent shooting. If they are unwilling shooters and they'd hesitate any office. Which is kinda come grinding down to a halt not only is curry making his shots and all these green making his permanent shots. But the ball is moving around the perimeter. Much quicker than it was. So there's more consequential doubling joel embiid than there ever has been monarch got a lot of assists but Ogle gets one us open. Invite double or triple team has a lot of hockey else's shake milton hinton to downtown ten points and ten minutes off the bench make no mistake that play which about drawing the double and then the ball moving east gotta be willing to be content. That the ball's the swing opposite and he's gonna creative for shots teams are now left with a real choice whereas before i think the whole strategy just send you all need help and disguise it a little bit senate in different locations but if you send it frequently enough you're going to confuse joel embiid or the sixers aren't going to have the talent or the players to make him pay. I think that's changed now.

"But you know the the the deaf one of the defining moments of kobe's early career as a rookie missing. All those shots air boeing. Those shots against utah in the playoffs. No less with a really talented team around him. And you know the lakers fan. And i was very mad at him for joel. And that's and that's the that that that's what that's what you have to do as a star is upcoming star right. You have to have those moments where you put on the line. You're willing to do it. You take the backlash you take. Michael lee being mad at you as a laker. Get over it. Michael will get over it and and and you. You have to have those failures. Michael jordan had to have those feelings the broader to have this like all the greats magic johnson. isiah thomas. everybody has to go through that at some point. If you don't even take the chances and that's what it feels like with. Ben simmons i think you nailed it like he doesn't wanna put himself in that position so he can still have the fairly clean stat line. This had a triple double. I did my part. And i defended my ass off and he does. And that's really important too but you're the guy with the ball in your hands or you. The team's main ball handler creator. Playmaker the responsibility that goes with that is huge. And i remember last year. Elton brand made a point that you know one of the things that he's talked about like he always wants to make the right play and that he trusted his teammate. Will make the open shot if he gets a form than if he takes the jumper. And i'm like well that's fine and dandy but if you're if you're one of the best players on the team then you got to say i'm the best option here like i am the best option here in have confidence in your own ability in. I'm not sure if they're maybe. That's what's major confident. But even still he won't ever get that confidence if he doesn't try and this is why i thought james harden for ben simmons made a world of sense izzo. It absolutely did In we'll see how it plays out. I will give to buy harris credit His reunion with doc rivers turned out.
Daryl Morey on verge of joining Philadelphia 76ers as president of basketball operations
"The seventy sixers Daryl Morey this drop that nowhere today. They're expected to finalize a deal. It'd be president of basketball operations work alongside GM, Elton brand turnover this off season for Philly. Doc Rivers Now coaching what it would Daryl Morey mean to a team Ben Simmons who doesn't shoot the three Ramona and Joel Embiid, who as the Center Position Daryl, Morey has gone away from recently. Like Garo thinks about basketball differently than we all deal and I think he's you know oftentimes credited with changing the game of basketball into into what we see today and so I if you're if you have one of the most unsolvable rosters in basketball. NBA Trade Deadline
"Yeah. Mine is twenty two hours to the deadline for trade. Everybody's moving further away from the product of the bench and the Sixers got themselves a five and the rafters might have Kyle Lowry situation. Also feast your eyes on the us new putter twenty four year old promotes drill. Yup. Let go. Best holders twenty four his by. Get all that tad or older than his TV. Let's start with Tobias Harris to Philadelphia. Sixers get it near all star LSD. It's two picks said Landry Wilson and a Mike. We haven't Israel with us is this a figure deal for the Sixers or clippers. Well, because the question demands an answer I'll say the Sixers, but if you look at the clippers situation, obviously with getting a lot of free agents of cap space here available and if they end up not making the playoffs get to hold onto that twenty nineteen draft pick of theirs. It's obviously for the future. But for the Sixers it's right now. And this is exactly what teams that are close want. Their teams to do you go all in and Elton brand clearly did that with Jimmy Butler trade. And now this one I still question whether they can be the obvious top team in the east you want you have more town than that starting five, but your depth is diminished. And I don't know how much more Tobias Harris can give you when you're running stuff for Embiid and Riddick and Simmons and Butler already. But if I'm the Sixers fan, again, you're already that committed you might as well, go all in Lynton Yates, also. Well, it's about is a forty plus percent three point shooter. So he can give you that. However, the issue is that he's on expiring contract. So of this isn't at the top, you know, if this doesn't move the Sixers to the top will then it's a bad gamble, which is why I think ultimately the clippers probably win this because they've got everything they've needed in this situation. We're coop. Recouping all those players and picks is what you have to do in order for the clippers to improve. That's not always easy to pull off and actually get value back in terms device harassed. But right now, I think is he's right. If the Sixers can make it to the finals, this is justified whether or not you bring devised backing up, Bob, ruin your view of it. For the record. They just picked up one of the best kept secrets in the league. Most people do not know how good Tobias Harris is or that. He's averaging twenty two game but shooting forty three percent from the floor. They do points. Now, they they chlorate yet. They're the winner right now because they are now assembled one of the three or four best starting fives in the league. They're going for it it being getting to the finals. I don't know the day of deluded themselves to think that this team will beat the warriors when they get there. But I don't think they certainly think they can now beat the raptors the bucks and the Celtics with this team, and they may very well be right. So it's all about now for them. And as far as the clippers concerns over conjecture, sarahspain you. Yeah. The temptation is to go with the burden. The hand is better than two in the Bush and say this is all about the Sixers because as Bob Ryan said they've got one of the best starting five now and talent wise there as believable as anybody in the east to get the number one seed and go to the finals that being said, it's actually a bigger deal for the clippers because we already had the Sixers as one of the best teams in the east and with the potential to. Compete the clippers have now established themselves and very clearly made the moves that are necessary to say, we are a destination for two max super free agents in this off season. And that's a big change from where they were before. And what we expect it out of them. So it's a bigger deal for Ellen. I want to address it in second. But real quick since Bob said Philly's got a top two or three starting five in the NBA.
NBA -- Markelle Fultz's shooting problems next issue for 76ers after Jimmy Butler trade
"Fold the thing that really stands out to me. And it's to me after the Jimmy Butler acquisition for the seventy Sixers in general is on Saturday as I walked around campus ESPN and was talking to some of the basketball guys here. I kept asking how they liked the Jimmy Butler trade in several people said, hey, what I don't like about it is that the seventy Sixers just lost some shooting and they're going to struggle. To find that shooting. Again, they don't have a lot of guys with range. So then I'm watching Marquel Foltz to Markelle full things. And I'm realizing man is sort of I realize it's not a range issue. But in less, the seventy Sixers are going to adopt sort of a Milwaukee Bucks metric where they're just gonna do only short shots, and they're only going to compact everything around the rim. I don't know how they're going to stretch it. I don't know how they're gonna shoot it. It's it's one of the things that we think we have to keep an eye on on how they adjust. Yeah. Absolutely. You look at what they were intimidating or hoping to get in the last two off seasons when they've sort of failed. I guess they've to off-seasons in a row acted as though they were all in on getting a max type guy and haven't been able to get that last year. It was Paul George and Paul George maybe made a little more sense for this team. He didn't need the ball in his hands as much better three point shooter. But you are still getting a great player in Jimmy. What's most interesting to me beyond the basketball aspect is personality wise, you've already got. A relationship between Embiid and Simmons that many say are not going as far as the stay frosty, but professional not not super friendly with each other. And then you've got full who's got a what seems to be a problem with with the. Yep. Since the mental approach to the game you bring in Jimmy Butler who is notoriously hard on his teammates. And who has been in the middle of some pretty big fights in his last two stops in Chicago, and Minnesota, and you wonder if he's going to inflame any existing tensions on that Philly team at and also that they've got a pretty young GM and Elton brand is not super experienced. Will. He deserve an urn Jimmy's respect in the way that he's going to want to stick around and be a part of this team going forward that they're going to want us. He's gonna say I'll stick around for that five years one hundred ninety million or whatever this this could be a rental, and it could make things worse. Well, especially given the the mindset around the organization. And they're young stars.
