Lawson took the role of head coach at duke. Now i went to school in north carolina. I did not go to wait or nc state or duke or unc. I went to elon university. But i know the battle of the carolinas. Well enough to know that you have to pick a side when it comes. Unc or duke. I didn't choose either. But i certainly i've. I've always found duke a little bit of a harder pill to swallow ilan go. Phoenix phoenix pride through and through So when carol loss took the role though. I did find myself becoming a little bit more invested in duke not so affronted by the mere mention of their name and so that is a coup in and of itself. But of course cara lawson Taking that role. There's been a lot of great content around carol lawson and the duke team which is why it was really tough to hear that women's basketball will end their season. I'm going to read the statement that was posted by duke women's basketball on december twenty fifth..

"We're back with Charlotte. Smith ex dunker and current head coach of women's basketball at Elon university when we left off Charlotte's game was heating up just in time to graduate, which was pretty much the end of the road for talented female players like her. Well, it was pretty much you played on the collegiate level. And then if you want it to pursue professional opportunities. You were going to have to go overseas. And it takes me back to like my high school yearbook. And I remember writing my book that I was going to play in the NBA. That was like, I just truly believe that there were if there were no professional opportunities that I was going to play in the NBA. Yes. Sure. Lotte's initial dream was to play in the NBA because the WNBA didn't exist yet. In fact, in nineteen seventy seven the New Orleans jazz did draft six foot three Lucy. Harris Stewart who just assumed it was a joke. Still the NBA did not come knocking for Charlotte. Yeah. And in the eighties. There had also been a number of failed attempts at establishing a women's pro league. So for Charlotte, the dream of pro ball still felt within reach just not in America where even today two thirds of WNBA players still have to play overseas during the off season to make ends meet. I was shocked to see that. There was so much talent overseas and just thinking to myself, we have all of this talent here in the states. But yet we have to travel thousands of miles to the splayed that talent Charlotte was recruited by an Italian team. And she was grateful for the chance to keep playing. But it was still a bummer to have to travel so far away from home Justice. Stay on the court. I was one of those ones that had a calendar. "This is science friday i am i oh coming to you from the carnegie library music hall in pittsburgh and my next guess aren't working on anything that looks like you and me this isn't the laura's from westworld or even the maria from metropolis but perhaps you share it understandable concern that robots as i say are going to replace us that's one of the themes we see a lot in science fiction for example or or all those movies about robot uprisings we've been watching over the years and even with completely benevolent self driving cars safety and trust are huge part of that conversation as we've been talking about so how do we build trust now how do we make the case for robots as partners for people doing the things they do best and leaving us free to do what we do best that some of the heavy questions my next guest are talking about not only gannon is an artist robot assist that invidia that chip company and a research fellow at carnegie elon university she sometimes called the robot whisper welcome thank you so much and henny moan is a psychologist and assistant professor in the robotics institute at carnegie mellon and director of the human and robot partners led welcome to you also thanks for coming by anyone who start with you tell us about the robots that you are working great so the work that i do looks at building assistive robots so when i say a system robots i mean robots that helped people and typically when we talk about assistance we mean helping people who have some sort of disability or or some sort of inability so one example is a robot arm that attach to powered wheelchair this is a commercial product it's made by a company in canada and this robot is designed to help people who have upper body motor impairment to do everyday tasks like picking up a glass of water and taking a drink now this robot is really challenging to us because it has to be tell operated i look at how do we add intelligence into the system artificial intelligence to make these robots more assistive for us so they can predict the help we need and actually assist us toward that help and what's really fascinating because i've watched her work of what what you've been doing is that the way you are getting the robots to respond.

"To you by statewide remodeling a study out of a north carolina university find strong support for austin being the new second headquarters of amazon that survey conducted by elon university poll people from all of the remaining sixteen cities still vying for the new hq and here in austin seventy percent are in favour of amazon coming but even though that alone sounds like people have austin are ready for city leaders to make a strong push to bring amazon to town the poll also shows there's a lot of fear among people when it comes to how the company might drive up the cost of living as well as how it might impact how much you pay for housing and when it comes to incentives more than eighty five percents say the city council should steer clear of offering any large packages patrick osborne newsradio bj arch was the best march on record for home sales in the austin metro the board of realtors says the twenty seven hundred home sold is ten percent higher than the same month last year prices were up three percent hundreds of students around austin are expected to walk out today to protest gun violence the austin school district is prepared to let the kids take part however the sixth grade teacher named tim says this will have no benefit for the kids in the long run the administration in phoenix to say no there's needs to be end of this i could find a million things to walk out on but you know what does that do for the future education those walkouts are set for ten o'clock this morning the us army is considering austin and more than a dozen other cities for a new tech program the austin chamber of commerce's drew chevrolet says the army wants to be close to innovation and has often on a list of possible sites for its army futures command that could mean big bucks for austin's tech in science sector this would be a command led by a multi star general and it would be a command that would have very significant purchasing power the.

"Pass out any moment honesty ready listen new poll out this morning most texas voters back legal status of unauthorized immigrants this is pretty interesting it's a new texas poll focusing on guns marijuana the two thousand seventeen tax cuts and affordable care act this is pretty interesting news as far as the this polling numbers go in we'll get into that coming up later this morning but there's another poll out this morning and it has to do with amazon a new poll ranks austin nights is being some of the wall the the least supportive residents of the city's under consideration for amazon second world headquarters about that now elon university research group hold hundreds of people from sixteen cities and there the fine listen amazon's search for a second world headquarters now the major austin the majority of austin i'ts they said they support the company moving here but they worry housing prices could be affected and the cost of living will go up thirty six percent of austin i strongly support the idea compared to just five percents who strongly support it oppose it rather now however often tonight's had less strong support for the idea that most other cities on that list in fact the survey ranked us like near the bottom actually of a welcoming city for amazon's world headquarters right from the chamber of commerce afraid of the todd don show the vice president of the chamber drew chevrolet they don't have a trust that the city of austin is going to solve some of the problems that are facing it around congestion and they've looked at the city council over the last couple of years in decades and seeing that we got way behind on transportation we got way behind on building enough supply that's true that's common knowledge now most of those polled also said they were not behind offering the company big financial incentives to come to town they just don't want that more than eighty five percent of the people polled said they wouldn't be willing to pay extra taxes to fund any kind of incentive for any kind of tech giant imagine that much really affect amazon as far as looking at austin they're going to be aware that they're going to be aware that austin is not really dying to have it here and yeah they're the ones that did the poll in conjunction with elon university.

"Austin is one of the twenty finalists for that mammoth amazon headquarters to project and there's a new poll out today by elon university they pulled citizens in the twenty cities that are finalised and in austin they have found some surprising results i'm surprised i'll put it that way they pull them on various questions are just hey do you want amazon in your city various questions here in austin the respondents seventy one percent support amazon picking austin for that massive headquarters to project really i'm surprised by that level of support i am too especially after i just saw today that it came out with the median salary at amazon is so i wonder if are thinking amazon's gonna bring to austin that they're seventy one percent for it well i'm for it and i will tell you i see it as a way to greatly expand the economic pie just think about it the local gross domestic product will continue going up for year after year in austin i know you're a skeptic you're you're not convinced that we should have amazon coming here live look at it as the wet my what my job is is to discuss traffic and from that standpoint can we really afford bringing a headquarters and all the jobs that that will intel and that many cars onto our already crowded freeways only thirteen percent oppose amazon selecting austin only thirteen percent sixteen percent are neutral thirty nine percent say yes offer them incentives thirty eight percent say treat amazon just like you would treat any other business looking at austin fifteen percents say offer them nothing and eight percent say offer amazon as much as possible.
