"And remember these were the first these Muller applications that are reference were the first then saw the southern district go back for more. And then you saw them go back even for more. When they when they went and executed the search warrant on office. So they were coming trying to find out everything about his his business does business everything about its finances. His relationships with foreign individuals. And eventually one of the things that the Justice department has the ability to do they may be in start. They may start investigating one crime. But if they find others they're off to the race. Which of course, is what happened here with campaign finance probe that still is under investigation as we saw today by the fact that that part of the search went application was still redact. Yeah. I'm gonna actually talk about that in just a second. Christine welcome. Matt miller. Thank you both for joining me tonight for more on what these cone documents. Tell us about the oral probem joined by MSNBC legal choice fans for me attorney for the northern district album, Harry formulas, turning deputy assistant attorney general is now contributing calms the Washington Post Joyce on what matches said so there's an entire section. The one thing that we thought was wrapped up in a neat. Bow on Michael Kohn was the illegal campaign donations scheme that he's already pleaded guilty to but there's an entire section of this. It's redacted and it's under the heading illegal campaign contribution scheme. It's eighteen pages. And we don't get to see it. What do you make of that? Well, usually when something's redacted in a release like this the logical assumption is that they're still investigation that's ongoing. So my takeaway is that there's a case either on a dishes defendants more conduct or both. And the reason that we're learning about that now is because these reductions were necessary in the point of view of special counsel's office lawyers to protect that ongoing investigation. Harry. There's also the fact that we know that some things have been farmed out in some things haven't, and it's hard to make sense of what has and hasn't been because we don't know what has really been retained. Although we do know the Manafort prosecution was retained do you have a sense of what it means alternately that some things have been given to local prosecutors federal prosecutors in some things have stayed with Muller. Yeah. So I two points on I totally agree with Joyce. But they also told judge hell it's to protect the rights of uncharged individuals. So it suggests there. Our third parties. I think maybe Elliott ROY D may be Trump junior who are potentially involved on the farming out point the most one of the most interesting things reading between the lines of the application is he was farming out over a year ago to New York, we conceive of this this ladder strategy to try to protect the pro. But if that's right. He was thinking in those terms already. Why do you do it? I two reasons one to to try to protect and also to just sort of a distribution of resources. He's got a core team, and they were taking on a lot. But I think it's quite interesting, and we didn't learn until today just how early into the probe he begins to distribute materials to other offices. There's also the facts Joyce that there's this central question. Here about was the work Michael Kohn doing a violation of law. He has not pleaded to any of the violations at an issue. The. Gin the investigation. We don't kind of know what becomes of the expert part of it. Whether they concluded that this was not chargeable. But it seems unlikely they concluded that given some of the other things they did charge and get an applete to what do you make of that? I think it's frankly, just not possible for us to know right now, it could be that they hit hit an evidentiary barrier..

"Clearly, I think you see people of all in in many ways political fates, as well, it'd be candid with you Ali there, plenty of Democrats and Republicans move I've talked to over the course of this last few days who were terribly upset and mourned what happened in New Zealand. So I just again regret that the White House refuses to play a leadership role on this front. However, America can move forward, regardless of whether that White House plays a leadership role. Do you know anything about the House Judiciary committee holding hearings on white nationalism? You know, I don't that was the first that I had heard of it was you mentioning it here on the on the segment tonight. I don't know that I've received any kind of formal notice that the judiciary committee is going to hold that kind of hearing. There's certainly been letters of inquiry letters of protest from variety of different members of judiciary committee and other committees in congress to variety of federal agencies really making clear their desire for more action on this front, given the trend lines which are very clear, so whether or not ultimately a hearing takes place in the judiciary committee or another committee of jurisdiction say the homeland security committee, clearly these conversations are going to be happening in congress, and frankly, they're happening across the country. They're happening around dinner tables around kitchen tables in living rooms and in coffee shops, and in boardrooms, and it's important for those discussions what role then as a as a member of congress, or as a member of the judiciary committee. Do you think this is a role for congress? This is serious. If I mean, the numbers are very clear, I just want to quote from an NBC article within that has. Formation on the extremism, white extremism. The Anti-Defamation League said domestic extremists killed at least fifty people in the United States in two thousand eighteen up from thirty seven in two thousand seventeen white supremacists were responsible for the great majority of the killings. Which is typically the case the group broke the group broke between two thousand eight and two thousand sixteen far right plots and attacks outnumbered Islamist incidents, inspired by groups such as ISIS by almost two to one. The number of hate groups operating across America also rose to a record high of one thousand and twenty in two thousand eighteen that's according to the southern poverty Law Center. Congressman this is a serious problem in two thousand nineteen of this is happening. Yeah. No. I couldn't agree more. And obviously the empirical data that you just outlined is deeply sobering. And it speaks for itself. So yes, I think there is a role for congress in its oversight responsibilities. I suspect that perhaps the homeland security and crime subcommittee of the judiciary committee, or or the homeland security committee is well, I suspect will be taking a deeper look to make sure that the federal agencies that are responsible for preventing domestic terrorism, and and prosecution of hate crimes and so forth that they are well resourced and that they're taking this seriously because clearly given the data and the trend lines. It's something that we all ought to be a talking about and acting on congressman John goes good to see you as always. Thank you, sir. Thank you. Thanks for having me. All right coming up. You've probably I heard the name Elliott ROY D former deputy finance chairman of the RNC when the Wall Street Journal reported that Michael Cohen helped Brady payoff. A playboy playmate with whom he was having an affair. But now it turns out that brought reported connections to many people tied up in series investigations involving the Trump White House run, very deep. That's next, and we'll tell you why tomorrow could be another tough day for individual one. Tomorrow could be a big day for individual one. That's because a federal judge set tomorrow as a deadline for prosecutors to make public the search warrants for that shocking rate on Michael Cullen's, home and offices last year. Now that should give us an idea of what teams were looking for back in April of two thousand eighteen in a raid that led to Michael Cohen pleading guilty and Donald Trump all but being named an unindicted co-conspirator. Lanny Davis lawyer for Michael Cohen issued this statement tonight..

"Park. Diego. You're on WNYC. Hi, thanks for taking my call. You referenced Michael Cohen, extorting AT and T in Nevada and several other companies like every other two bit gangster. I'm sure money's getting kicked up to the big boys. So are they tracking this money, and is it somehow funneled into some sort of Trump organizational, presidential re election committee or or something like that. Right. Well, you from the innocent until proven guilty. File you can't be sure of that. But you hear what the suspect we don't we have not seen such evidence. But what we do know is that these powerful people around Trump the Steve Wynn was also on the finance committee of the Republican National Committee. They all resign now. So it was Steve Wynn. Elliott ROY D, Michael Cohen and one other. Gentleman from North Carolina is still there and. The casino. They are not necessarily. We don't know anything about any kickbacks. But you know, as we have previously documented in Trump Inc. And a previous episode. There is the money flow from the RNC to Trump's properties. So that does happen. Now that doesn't mean that's criminal. But there is a money flow that we've been watching the the money flow being that the RNC and other political groups are simply booking events at Trump properties. A Manafort question from Boris and flatbush Boris you're on WNYC. Hi, brian. Thank you trumping guys. And so this is a little bit of a convoluted question. Basically, you know, in my own research and seems like there's this nexus of connections to Russian organized crime specifically to the crime family of on the Gingrich who is the kind of breaking beach gone and also go to money launderer for criminal organizations around the world. And it seems like between Felix sater's Michael Cohen, Viktor Yanukovych, Paul Manafort. Ukrainian tycoon. There's this nexus of connections to all these people in Trump's orbit. These people are buying Trump units in Trump Tower. And and it it just seems like a really great place to do some reporting. And I'm just wondering if you have any thoughts on that. Or if you plan to to dig deep there. Well, I mean, yes, it's something that we've definitely been looking at in our story on Michael Cohen in our episode, which is the end of last season. We did look at some of his organized crime ties possibly the I mean, one of the things just sort of stepping back. More broadly. Not speaking only about the Russians, but about the network around Trump is in this episode of Trump Inc. That grab today we speak to a corruption expert named Sarah cheese, who is the name that might be familiar to some listeners because she used to work for NPR. Now, she that she stayed in Afghanistan after she was a reporter there and became an expert on corruption wrote a book about it. And one of the things that she said is this. These networks are not accidents that the way corruption works in the places that she studied like, Afghanistan, Tunisia, Nigeria, and she says, she sees strong parallels, and what's happening in the US. Now is that there is a network of people that are connected to each other like members of a club that act mutually in each other's interests. So that it's not an accident that we see Elliot Brady connected to Michael Cohen that we see Elliot Brady did business with Rick gates who was Paul manafort's protege. But that there is that this is how these networks take power around the globe to potentially allow people to personally profit versus acting in the public interest. And that's in the broadest terms, I mean, there is we should say the note of caution about the specifics, which is as we've pointed out a lot on the podcast. There are so many unanswered questions because so much of this information, and the connections, and the deals are non-public and its OPEC. Right. And so, you know, we've been very careful we spent an enormous amount of time. Digging into this stuff and trying to be transparent about right so much time about what exactly we know? And particularly in terms of all these connections, and so forth, the vast amount that we just don't know. The first episode of the new season of Trump Inc. Is now out as of today. Get it wherever you get your podcasts. WNYC's Andrea Bernstein propublica. Eric manzke? Thank you, both so much Brian Brian Lehrer on WNYC. Stay stateent. Staying.

"Great. Again, Michael Cohen make this company what it needs to be than Donald Trump. We need great feels we need when Elliot ROY d. needed a lawyer for a hush money agreement. He hired comb than the president's attorney. Both men raised money for Trump. They both had his ear and. Both made money from that connection. You only know about one of them. Hello and welcome to season two of Trump Inc a podcast from WNYC and propublica that Deeks deep into the intersection of business and politics and the Trump administration. I'm Andrea Bernstein this season where broadening our open investigation to look not only at the president and his family, but also the people around Trump and the ways they might be profiting from their proximity to the president. This is not a new phenomenon. There's been corruption in both democratic and Republican administrations, but this time around something feels very different. Protocols and norms are being tossed assigned. This chaotic environment creates fertile ground for people who want to influence the president like Elliott, ROY, d. as historian phones, you can see the dynamics at play, but before we get to Elliott, ROY, d. we're bringing in propublica Eric humanity Herrick, hey, Andrew, Eric. You have been thinking about the ways that people around Trump are making money or potentially benefiting from the presidency, and you've come up with three categories. That's right. Three categories. So let's start with the basic stuff. The first one is using your government post to fund your lifestyle or that of your friends or loved ones who is this. So one of the clearest examples is former EPA chief Scott Pruitt about blatant corruption that reaches to the very top of the Trump administration, but also lotion among the many, many things. He had a staff drive him around town looking for his favorite fancy lotion, and then there's Chick-fil-A right Pruitt used his job to try to get a chick fillet franchise for his wife, and then you have a whole lot of travel not just a Scott Pruitt you have, for example, Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, who took military flights, costing nearly a million bucks including one with his wife, where they happen to land at a great. Spot to view the solar eclipse fifteen minutes ahead of time. I put on the glasses there like paper glasses. I'm like, I'm worried I'm getting getting my eyes burned out for like two seconds. That was the end of my interest in the eclipse after he was criticized. The treasury department said Mnuchin would reimburse the government for his wife's portion of the travel. And then there was an investigation into the trips which didn't find anything illegal, but it did note previous treasury secretaries typically flew commercial on their domestic flights. And so what's category to category? Two is possibly making money from your government position. Take commerce, secretary. Wilbur Ross who basically got negative information about a company and then essentially bet against the company stock raw says it was part of a complex trade to actually divest from the company, but they're just a lot of open questions there. So also in this category is President Trump and his family. The list there is very long. You have President Trump spending a lot of time at his properties and constantly. Using the presidential pulpit to talk up his various properties. And then there's Trump's hotel in DC which has become the place to be for lobbyists and foreign officials category. One is using your government posts to fund a lifestyle for yourself, your friends, your family category. Two is possibly using your government position to make money what's three. So the third categories essentially selling and benefiting from access to power. And we've long seen that in Washington, but what's different now is the level of chutzpah is really remarkable. So for example, we just heard Michael Cohen a minute ago, and he made deals with companies to quite explicitly, sell them access to the presidency. One of those companies, by the way happens to be connected to a Russian oligarch and then there's Rick gates, right? Who pleaded guilty to money laundering and conspiracy against the United States. But before he did that, he reportedly sold. His own access to the administration to Elliott Brody propublica 's, Eric humanity. So Elliott party Brody operates so far below the radar. We couldn't find any tape of him speaking. We asked to interview him for this story, but a spokesperson decline. We sent a long list of questions in an emailed statement..

"What do you know about what muller hopes to find out from george nader well there are some very interesting possibilities first of all mueller's investigators have been asking witnesses about the possibility that mr nater sought to funnel money from the united arab emirates to trump's political efforts that will be illegal it would also signal that the united arab emirates was trying to manipulate the two thousand sixteen presidential election as well as curry favor with trump in the hopes of influencing him so that's already pretty interesting on top of that comes an interesting meeting in the seychelles during the transition that began the trump administration when he was not yet an office having already been elected the crown prince who is the effective ruler of the united arab emirates convened a meeting including mr in the seychelles in the indian ocean that brought together a businessman very close to vladimir putin and someone who the maradas believed was liaison to the trump team and that person is eric prince eric prince was the founder of blackwater which was a private security company that worked for the us government in iraq back in those days mr nadir worked as a kind of business agent for blackwater in iraq so they go way back and he was present and may have played an important role in bringing together this interesting meeting of a russian and an american right before the start of the trump administration which raises the possibility that mr mueller's interest in the united arab emirates is not a detour from his original mission which was looking after the question of russian interference in the two thousand sixteen election in fact it might be part of it it might be related to the uae may have played a role alongside russia in trying to get trump elected so there's so many interesting branches in the story so let's look at another aspect of it you have access to emails that were hacked and linked between george nader who is again the advisor to the crown prince of the united arab emirates and someone named elliott roy d who's a republican fundraiser who has had access to the trump administration so that's another way of looking at how the uae has tried to influence the trump administration and get access to it so before we talk in in.

"No about what muller hopes to find out from george nader and someone who the maradas believed was a liaison to the trump team and that person is eric prince eric prince was the founder of blackwater which was a private security company that worked for the us government in iraq back in those days mr nadir worked as a kind of business agent for blackwater in iraq so they go way back and he was present and may have played an important role in bringing together this interesting meeting of a russian and an american right before the start of the trump administration which raises the possibility that mr mueller's interest in the united arab emirates is not a detour from his original mission which was looking after the question of russian interference in the two thousand sixteen election in fact it might be part of it it might be related to the uae may have played a role alongside russia in trying to get trump elected so there's so many interesting ranches in the story so let's look at another aspect of it you have access to emails that were hacked and linked between george nader who is again the advisor to the crown prince of the united arab emirates and someone named elliott roy d who's a republican fundraiser who has had access to the trump administration so that's another way of looking at how the uae has tried to influence the trump administration and get access to it so before we talk in in more depth about the emails let's look a little bit at george nader's background he's the political advisor to the uae was also convicted on charges of child porn and sexual abuse of minors so has has served to hurt his reputation you'd think it would wouldn't you because it appears to have been fairly widely known we were hearing it at the rumor level for a while before it was confirmed by court records he's a fascinating figure who's been a sort of a back door diplomat for decades he's elevensies emigrant united states naturalized citizen and he set up a journal about middle east policy in washington which was able to get interviews with all kinds of leaders the israelis the iranians various arab leaders for years and in that capacity he got into the business of sort of jetting around the world sometimes running diplomatic errands for the american government for example he was involved in some.

"Since of the united arab emirates in return for meters cooperation with muller's investigation what do you know about what muller hopes to find out from george nader well there's very interesting possibilities first of all mueller's investigators have been asking witnesses about the possibility that mr nater sought to funnel money from the united arab emirates to trump's political efforts that would be illegal they would also signal that the united arab emirates was trying to manipulate the two thousand sixteen presidential election as well as curry favor with trump in the hopes of influencing him so that's already pretty interesting on top of that comes an interesting meeting in the seychelles during the transition that began the trump administration when he was not yet an office having already been elected the crown prince who is the effective ruler of the united arab emirates convened a meeting including mr nadir in the seychelles in the indian ocean that brought together a businessman very close to vladimir putin and someone who the emerald as believed was liaison to the trump team and that person is eric prince eric prince was the founder of blackwater which was a private security company that worked for the us government in iraq back in those days mr nadir worked as a kind of business agent for blackwater in iraq so they go way back and he was present and may have played an important role in bringing together this interesting meeting of a russian and an american right before the start of the trump administration which raises the possibility that mr mueller's interest in the united arab emirates is not a detour from his original mission which was looking after the question of russian interference in the two thousand sixteen election in fact it might be part of it it might be related to the uae may have played a role alongside russia in trying to get trump elected so there's so many interesting branches in the story so let's look at another aspect of it you have access to emails that were hacked and linked between george nader who is again the advisor to the crown prince of the united arab emirates and someone named elliott roy d who's a republican fundraiser who has had access to the trump administration so that's another way of looking at how the uae has tried to influence the.
