This week I got a phone call that appeared to come from my wife's phone number. They started with a woman's voice crying incoherently. In my mind, at that moment, it could have been my wife. Then a man came on the line, claiming that he was part of a group that had kidnapped her. He told me to bring $5000 to a Walmart parking lot to get her back. I knew about virtual kidnapping scams, but the combination of the phone number, hearing what I thought with her voice, and his knowing that she happened to be in San Francisco that day made it feel very real. I put the phone on speaker and called 9-1-1 from the other line so that they could listen, but it took 20 frightening minutes before I knew it was a scam. Law enforcement leaders say they have a plan to try to tackle the problem. Looking at the latest crime numbers. There is an uptick with juveniles. And in response, Easton McDonald, Alexandria's assistant police chief says his department will launch a new effort that involves aggressive communication and community outreach. We've identified approximately 21 stakeholders that we are going to work with. He says the effort will include an increase in patrols and crime hotspots. "The Supreme Court has temporarily extended women's access to the abortion pill mifepristone until Friday. The justices are still considering whether to allow restrictions on the drug to take effect while a legal challenge to the medications FDA approval continues. The order has been signed by justice Samuel Alito that indicates the court now will act by Friday night. In other news, Virginia is working to clean up the state's voter rolls and election officials say they've discovered a huge number of dead people still registered as voters. I knew that there was something there. I didn't know that it was this big. That's the reaction from Virginia elections commissioner Susan beals after the state reviewed death records dating back to 1960 and found there were nearly 19,000 dead people still on the voter rolls. It was a computer coding error that missed between the date of the death being reported and the date of the death certificate. She says that's now being corrected and local registrars are being given new authority to remove someone's name in response to an obituary or a family's notification. Previously, they needed to have an official death certificate to do that. Nick and Ellie WTO P news. Where have all the people gone? Fairfax county says its population growth has slowed since 2020. Fairfax now reports the county's total population decreased in 2021, the first time the population shrank in fairfax since 1840. While no money has been paid out yet, Virginia promised up to 750 million bucks in economic incentives to the company in 2018. This comes a day after a Maryland court reinstated syed's Baltimore conviction for killing former girlfriend Heyman Lee in 1999. Lawyer Robbie Chaudhry, a public supporter of syed, says he's living a fairly normal life right now. Adon has his own home, a non is going to work. His parents are both ill. He's taking care of his parents. There are questions about what happens next after Maryland's second highest court reinstated the murder conviction against sayyed, ruling that the hearing at which his conviction was vacated must be done again.
