"Hey the mercury would have a good play here there and she'd clap and okay you know i respect. That was good. And it's a different environment and i think he absolutely adored it and so we joked that next year we might have to become season ticket holders and just totally driving to atlanta has many no atlanta's to be on a good trajectory in montgomery's has been a lot of fun watching your take that ownership role you know. She's one of those people that she doesn't know how to be anyone else so she's always just her in front of anyone and that's your gratitude to see her in that role. Just you know she. She played for the links for how long and so i was like wow. This is a completely different role than needs to singer in. And it's great. It's absolutely absolutely. I and for chris sake dukes a really good pocket of very entertaining and very awesome. Wnba talent right now between chelsea gray elizabeth williams would have been in the building a the game. You're i know. Hillary gretzky is on the mercury staff. As far as i recall now so he's got stuff to to look for not jazz. Thomas is playing great in connecticut. So you know if that helps them on on his end. But i had a feeling he would have some affinity there and would really enjoy. Because i i've always told people if you have any questions about the w just go to a game one game. It doesn't matter what it is. Who's playing you're in for life like the second you go to one because the atmosphere is is something else something special now. I know one thing that happened in impact wrestling especially. They've been big player in this. There's all this talk about this forbidden door right and what that means to people who follow wrestling impact is one of a few marquee large wrestling promotions that suddenly you're are our featuring performers on other promotions. We've seen impact wrestlers awa wrestlers japan wrestlers on each other's events as of recent and. It's kinda fun thing. Now let's assume the wnba were a part of this forbidden door. Mix up are there any wnba players. You would love to eventually see interesting all my gosh. That is a great question. I everybody that's listening obviously knows i'm flat out obsessed with the and see the way that she can talk. Her fought in a stewardship. Then oh my goodness put put my hand. She would be over immediately. I got to hear her call out like a wrestling refuge. I'll.

"When hangs it up. I maybe we'll go all in on the links but we'll be perfect because a lot of cheryl reeves ethos when it comes to drafting recently has been you know. Finally the most balanced you. Comp layer become star dangerfield's become a star. I mean she's really found a way to transition those levels of talent in in one way or the other. Because i think he's been. I mean there been cases this season especially where where minnesota's looks like a very scary team and it's when collier's playing at her fullest extent. That's evident and so i think you'll be in a in a good housing narran. That's of course to assume where we'll see retire anytime soon. I think if she could chew she play well into her fifties. So we'll have to see. I would love to see that you know and after they just won gold again when she said you know. We'll see you at the next one. I i'll man. I got offered the excited i was like. Is she berea ultra. I'm going to be there with you. Girl like let's do it all right. One of whatever co-hosts immediately texted me right when she did that was like she ain't kitten. I really think she shown years if she has anything to say about it. We're going to be seeing her various healthy and she can do it. You know she'll be there and who's going to say no. I mean she's got it in her. I think her in sewer just driven to do this forever. As as long as the machine will let them so and they've been such ambassadors in one way or the other. I i'd love to get thought of do you have any non uconn players. Were there for me because off. So you talked about minnesota with mccarville and waylon and company. Are there any other players that you recall. Having an affinity for in following the leaguer or was it pretty yukon centered where there any rivals even that you look at. Should i not mention candace parker. Should i steer clear of any names or it is so funny. You mentioned candice right away. Because that uconn tennessee rivalry you know with pat and gino and then just both incredible teams always so well coach. I i almost feel bad saying it now. But i hated kansas during always just went to tennessee. And you know now as an adult. I can step back and realize that she really is top. Ten alzheimer and i'm thrilled. She gets to be in her hometown this year. That's great yeah. I you mentioned lindsay lindsay. Whalen would probably be my top non yukon. Pick that minnesota cried and you know her ending up coming back flying so many great years with the links was really really special You know growing up and watching simone augusta. She's lsu girl. So you know i. I loved her and enjoy watching her play. I was sad when you know when she went to la. And but it's great. She's on their staff now and such so those couple. I am a juice for one thing really quick honestly flummoxed you really know your stuff makes me nervous. It makes me nervous for anything. I say that wrestling. I'm gonna sound like a really done your homework jumpy nervous at all kidding. When i tweeted like basketball was the first love of my life than you know. it'll other than pro wrestling. You know it it'll forever be my favorite sport and there's enjoy more so higher so pumped talk about this. Who knows what. I'm actually talking about exactly. Would you broke chemists. I do have to make the comet. We recently did a we. Intermittently will do a special series called w history where we'll dive into a player's history or something like that. We recently did that with candidacies. Rookie season with sparks. Back and how weird strange rivalry seemed to constantly follow her because obviously the last stage of retirements the sparks was that sparks links rivalry for a few years and how that was headed by candidates until the fouls who were big rivals in college. Now they're big rivals again in the pros against each other. They're right next to each other on scoring. Listen and other things. They have such an interesting play. It's interesting how that's played a role but you just talked about. How having the platform to be able to talk about your both of your. Your big loves in life is exciting. And it's interesting to me. Because and i've talked about this a bit with with our coast before raise feel like women's basketball and women's wrestling have seen a similar growth trajectory over the last few years and seeing where the wnba has risen over. The last few years is exciting because it's setting foundations. that are going to help it. Catapult popularity wise and really build it into the mainstream sports zeitgeist for long time. I mean everything from what they've been able to accomplish this year with the w twenty five campaign and even just new. The new uniform rollout and excitement there. You know everything on top of that. And i think with with wrestling no. I've been watching wrestling. Cincinnati six classic. Who recruit a. kid i was. I was seven years old when that was happening in wcw. And i remember watching that and getting really caught up in it. And since i was a kid i was pro. Wcw and so. I thought you know. And i so i grew up at a time. Win women's wrestlers. It was a real estate of flux. How they were treated how they were promoted on the show. And especially if you go just a few years after that and and what ariza's those came into these last. Several years have been really really fun to be a fan of women's wrestling because we went from a time when it seemed like Would we be able to get for mainstream promotions or would be able to see women featured heavily on a strong card and now we're in an era where from one standpoint you're looking at two wrestlemainia main event matches featuring women which has been fantastic. Obviously you're an impact which is no stranger to featuring women heavily on the card. I mean you can go back to the gail. Kim awesome kong days even before then where that's been a stronghold but i guess this is all just me setting the stage to ask. What do you think is really kind of led to this resurgence in almost women's sports in general over the last few years. We're we're starting to feel. It's not even a buzz anymore. It's just a pure movement And what do you feel needs to be done to continue pushing that forward so it can into new on the mainstream. I think one hundred percent spot on with the correlation between the growth of the wnba women's wrestling kind of taking a step forward in the last five to ten years specifically When i first started watching wrestling yeah. There were a lot of women that i did not look like on tv. It wasn't until you know. I saw beth phoenix than natalia. In austin con- like you mentioned. I realize own. You can be strong athlete and do this. You don't have to be you know swimsuit model because that has never been me will never be me and you know. It's kind of like earlier. Where i saw myself in d. where i was allowed to really embrace and be confident in being competitive and fiery and you know emotional on the court and caring about it and you know understanding how hard it is to be great as an athlete and great at anything You know that. That was kind of that moment for me in wrestling when i saw myself in.

"This is nicky. Colin guy canada fishes asia and. Welcome to the wnba. How's it going. Wnba nation welcome again We are very excited. We have a special interview today. We wanted to get a chance to dive a little bit in this. If you have been on the wnba twitter verse over the last week or so you might have caught windows and we. We're excited a chance to chat with her about this. But today we have very special guest impact wrestling. Do i call you superstar. Impact wrestling knockout. I'll do it superstar. Rachel l. ring recent recently knockouts tag team champion bronze-medalist to her own right in the world powerlifting championships. I could go on a of accolades you guys are gonna if you're new to the wrestling world and this is your first time hearing from a wrestler. You're going to get to know her very glad. she's fantastic. But rachel thank you so much for taking the to join us. Hey thank you so much for having me. I'm i'm thrilled to be here and share my love of hoops. You guys and i. We can talk a little wrestling as well now. I wanted to jump off with something that might be a bit of a surprise because we just before we started this talk a little bit about wanted talk basketball soccer wrestling i. To be honest. I saw your twitter profile and i want to jump in immediately and talk a little bit about for a second. If you don't mind you already. I i saw that. Yeah you're theater enthusiasts. I thought that was interesting. So i hereby perspective. I've curious some people. Just do that on twitter to be fun but is that a for real for real thing or as for real for real thing. I that is so funny. You kick the interview off with that. I'm the real to talk about them. So you know the last year and a half has been really tough for a lot of people and not just immediately go into a very heavy subject but at the start of the pandemic I was working with. Wwe and they released now throughout the pandemic. You know probably about a hundred wrestlers in so my son and my boyfriend were two of those people and you know our entire adult lives. We've been committed to being the best. Prowrestler we can and wwe was my dream job since i was you know in high school and so that was a really tough time for me at about that stain time. The vancouver query 'em. They got a rescue babies theater in and they started to have a live stream of his name is joe we and now he's over a year old but every day. I'm not kidding. When i say that every day you will have joey on in the house. And now he's with you know the seven other otters there so we've got to kind of grow up and you know. He was like seven pounds when he was rest here now. He's just a big chunk. And so i was just so good for mental health. You noted just watch something so cure and the people there that took care of him. And you know they start with bottle feeding him and now he's just thriving and so it was such a pile of our day and throughout the last year and a half. We've learned so much about the and we just are in love with them and so yeah. I added that in my bil- with pride. No that's fantastic. I bring it up because they show otters ridley theme in our family. We my wife. And i went to visit remember visiting the seattle aquarium on our honeymoon and like the last exhibit there is there otter exhibit. We legitimately just stood there. Giggling to each other is complete adults. I remember we bought offer puppet there for a long time. It was our christmas tree topper so we put santa hat on him and it was otter caused. That's who our top was. But now it's used daily because my my son just turned three We like to read to him throughout the day. Especially before bed. And he won't read with mom and dad. He has to read with mr otter. So one of us have to put on the auto puppet. And mr otter has to read with them every day. So when i saw that i was like oh. I already feel kinship there. That's perfect so i love that that is that's such a great connection between us. Then yeah i. I'm so thankful for them. I jokingly call them water teddy bears and they got me through some difficult days in the last year and a half. Just they're you know they're so calming and and adorable right when they hold hands cry of happiness. So i'm gonna have that in common no absolutely. I glad we were able to dig it on that because it had been in my mind since i saw that. But obviously we're we're here to mostly talk about basketball. I know a lot of Us picking up on you came from a twitter thread where you had a chance to dive in a little bit on on what women's basketball meant to you and your boyfriend able to head out to phoenix mercury game which is one of the best news needs league. I and so we really wanted to get a chance to hear your story and and really what got you into the game. You're kinship to especially uconn basketball and damage eurocity and everything that comes with your story and basketball is a big part of it so diving into what would you say would be one of your first main memories of following women's basketball growing up so i started playing basketball when i was in sixth grade. And i'm from a really small town in central minnesota and being competitive and feisty. Were not really things that people love to see in women athletes their hand. That's been me since i can remember. You know. I played football at one point and i was on the guy scene because we didn't have a girls team and you know dow even my profession being a professional wrestler. You know it's a very male dominated sport and so being competitive inspire is me. It's part of who i am. So that was really shunned upon when i was growing up by coaches and teachers. You know i'd had extended family members. Tell me it wasn't lady like to get so upset. Calls in games and stuff like that. I can laugh about it now but at the time it was really difficult to kind of just. My mom was my biggest supporter in being a true competitive athlete. And then i ended up kind of getting into the u. of m. You know the lady gophers their basketball team. The gentleman car mccarville in lindsay whalen at the time of easy to fall in love with them. But i didn't pay much attention to uconn freshman year but her sophomore year kind of when she burst on the scene. I just saw her and saw myself in her and and just fell in love. Because you know anyone who's seen d it knows she is the ultimate competitor. And if you will talk talk and still bark back at the rats bark the other players like there's no hesitancy there and i was just drawn to her and i fell.

I promise you this maybe not in that moment but sometime throughout that they they'll show you something that will bring him absolutely joy in it may be the smallest of things but this is a connection. That's so good and I think of the versa, he who began a good work in me he is faithful to complete it. He is faithful. Yourself projects best. You know we're not a DIY project sitting out on the curb were not. We are someone who? He calls US and scripture a masterpiece and that sounds lofty and even egotistical that when I looked at it is of Lord. And you're the potter I'm weekly and instead of playing this. Road to nowhere game in my head. What if I exchange this condemnation for connections you where will you take me? Watt will you show me? What will you do me do me and it is a complete shift a flip and there's one question that I tell I share that we should ask more feelings way instead of asking the question is, how do I measure today less flip that question to what measured Jesus do I need today because that changes the conversation. "Thing and I love the way that you talk about the things that try to steal our joy and this book. So I'M GONNA. Ask you maybe a hard question what. Is What is the one why that maybe you have believed or struggled with or what has tried to? What are some of the things that have tried to steal your joy? Yeah. So I want to start with the the precept which is kind of the biggest lie. Is that joyous? Only a feeling? That is just merely a feeling and so what happens misty? Let's say that we have day remorse sad or a day room or angry or a day room or confused or frustrated. Sometimes, the What we do in this moments is either somebody else replace condemnation on because we're not happy. or joy filled. And what we need to understand is that joy is more than a feline joyous unknowing because there are going to be days that we are sad and they are going to be days that we're confused or frustrated or cynical, or trying to figure things out, and that doesn't make us a less lovable to God that doesn't make us any less faith field because got not only cares about how we feel he created as to feel. And so that that would be the biggest joy dealer and this is where I found. I wrote this book I wrote this book in a year called scarred. Turned in my manuscript and then Watson another year that made scarred look like nothing and Mrs What I've found is that Dust feelings that I have. I have a safe place to go with those and not only that those feelings are indicators of where I need God to fight with me and in me and through me the most. So if I pushed them down or mass them or pretend they're not there they're gonNA show up later down the road. Yeah. Yeah as a as I was reading I thought about you know I lost a baby to try some eighteen and and I thought I was being very strong and very stoic and I remember some of my friends praying for me and I think they saw this facade.

"Barcelona taking on Napoli One, one, this of course going. into the second leg at the camp. Now, boss in the end winning by three goals to one heads of discussing Alley Moreno Frank Leboeuf who's about to become a grandfather for the first time. He's adore to in labor and without comment we also introduced Craig Burley as well to the program Craig. Let's start. Shall we reflecting on that win for at the camp now once again Lionel Messi was instrumental. Thank. You. So when you went for thirty thousand and just just delaying the inevitable for him one more game going to the core finals. You know and you can't say much more than. in terms of the performance, it was unsurprising that. Not Play who finished seventh and Sarah will still very much towards the end of the game I thought that you'd brought Milijana Burt eller physical presence. And get more balls in the balked. He didn't do that until the last ten or twelve minutes and so bacelona got away with it was messy sharpness. That gotten through particularly the the bold inactivation killer Bali. For, the kick, but there was one or two calls in the Game B-. Bustle, and got the job done is they should have. Done done against the site are not the best in Syria. We'll talk about some of these dubious calls in a moment but I thought you talked about the so much. Have we I feel after every Barcelona game about how dependent they are on messy? Yeah, it's it's not gonNA take not anytime soon that is the way that they play and everybody on the field looks for where Messi is and give him the ball and led him resolve the issues. There isn't any more productivity coming from anywhere else other on the field. There is a through ball from anybody else there isn't a final pass from anybody else across from anybody else if it's not messy, essentially winning the ball given to himself, crossing the to himself and finishing himself it's very, very difficult to see where Barcelona produces Brielle, goalscoring opportunities and. Again. Today we saw Nantong agrees bid a lot of running a lot a lot of work for the team defensively by very little impact offensively restarted scores have penalty gig, but very little outside of that and really what was truly surprising about this game in the second half is to see Barcelona at home just renounced possession just four for the possession say, yeah, you will. You have the ball you see if you can create something on, we're going defend. Now this is Barcelona we're talking about this is not a millennial team. This is not a defensive team, per se and yet at team that you have historically seen at the count now just knocking the ball around really. Possession Monday, the rhythm of the game that is not what we saw today in the second half they were more than happy to sit behind the ball, very unlike Barcelona but in the end effective effective and to advance onto the next round. Frank is testament to what have done in this competition over previous years. The even three one up I home with ten minutes ago you still felt you had to watch this game to the end just in case Napoli got back into it. Yes. Exactly. Because you know that defensive, a bustling is very fragile and the showed that many many times and. And the consistency now they're the talent is not as well except that you have a fantastic little man missy to also do young think he did well, I mean the outside the food when he gave him the giftable macy when he scored and the goal was. disallowed. is an absolute beauty but otherwise, Yeah Celine Craig, it's very very. Well you. No performance style you know where where you don't see many things you you see only one guy doing the difference and that's it and you you I wanted to to see after the. Win Win scalding just before the off time. Say Six second time. It's going to be better. Maybe we're going to see something. Well, he didn't happen to the bid at some point but. How. The of the day you Didn't see a good game good game I. so average she'll team against I've sees a dude, the shade of the that we known I think we're doing the rest of these bustle and a disservice here. Yeah, they're under performance. There's no doubt about it, but sometimes players even the best players are looking for guidance and we know we know there are holes in the boss loners squad the there's quite a few top teams have holes in the squad. But did you spend all in? Well, let's see. It's just a messy for Barcelona. I think when you look around, I think what they need to find as as yeah, a balance within the squad which comes through budget. But a coach, find a key to unlock the clear talent there, and it takes some pressure off message Volvo they struggled and lost his job and said to him was a man it was going to commend with as Grit football style from Betas and nuts really not happened, and so there is more in the locker for boss of them were seeing I'd just feel that the sampler not playing well, another players looking for guidance. And yet defined the court this going to command and the last twelve to eighteen months or so and fainter sets up the gets the best of everybody else as well as getting the best Lino. Is Joker a 'Dangerous' Movie? Director Todd Phillips Responds to Critics

"Director Todd Phillips Take on the jokers starring Joaquin Phoenix is bringing bringing up a now familiar conversation what is Hollywood's role when it comes to gun violence and how should the industry respond to concerns about excessive violence in film NTV Brent Lang is executive editor for film immediate variety and he wrote about why the families of the twenty twelve Aurora theater shooting are concerned about joker oh car. Hey Brent Hi John can you I set up a little bit of the premise of joker and how violence is part of its story sure so joker is is an origin story and it it takes a look at this man who's a mentally disturbed man living with his kind of crazy mother and a very rundown rundown part of the city and he has kind of aspirations of being a stand up comic and you know without giving too much away those those dreams don't come to pass and instead he kind of gradually loses touch with reality and a lot of violence ensues and but as part of that he kind of inspires this anarchic uprising in Gotham city and it is it is a very violent very bloody very R a-rated comic book adaptation so how much of the premise or the violence is behind the families of the Aurora shooting victims to write this letter and Dan share their concerns well as far as I can tell the families of the Aurora shooting victims have not seen the film they're they're reacting to kind live coverage of the pitcher and and they say that you know when their letter they say that that they've heard that it presents the character as a as a protagonist with a sympathetic origin origin story and and that gave them pause and they're they're very clear though they're they're not asking Warner Brothers to not release the movie they say that they support the right to free speech and free expression but then they also sort of take a page out of Spiderman and say with with great power comes great responsibility so they're using this film to Urge Warner Brothers and its parent company Warner Media and I suppose at and T. as an extension extension to become more involved in the issue of gun reform and they're asking for the company to support of certain in sort of specific means of of social engagement they're asking them to end political contributions to candidates who who take money from the NRA they're asking them to used their their clout and their platform to pressure Congress to act for gun reform and they're also asking them to help fund survivor funds and and gun violence intervention programs and it seems like the conversation around joker is part of a broader conversation around violence in Hollywood your or editor in chief. Claudia eller wrote an op Ed for variety around the time that blunt house productions film the hunt was dropped by universal pictures. The headline on that piece is why it's time for Hollywood to reconsider the amount of violence on screen so even if the families from Aurora are not really asking Warner Brothers to limit the violence that is in their movies it does feel like these things are starting to percolate up and there might might be a bigger conversation. That's either about to happen or is already happening. Absolutely I mean I think that that this is a conversation that that's been happening for a while. It's interesting I talked to someone named Igor Volk Street and he runs an organization called guns down America and he helped craft this letter and I actually asked him sort of specifically if they were implying that that there was a connection between onscreen violence and and and gun violence and he was very careful and he said actually science doesn't back that up and that that they aren't contending that but just because he thinks that it doesn't mean that other people don't and I think it's a debate that's going to continue through the release of joker and onto the release of other violent movies that Hollywood backs. I WANNA play a a little bit of what Joker Director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix said about this issue in an interview with the website jeon. There have been a lot of pieces written by people people who proudly state they haven't even seen the movie and they don't need to. I would just argue that you might want to watch the movie you might want to watch it with an open mind. The movie make statements about lack of love childhood trauma lack of compassion in the world and I think people can handle that message. It's it's it's uncomfortable. It's uncomfortable for for all of us. I think we all are aware of these issues and we are concerned. I think that's why we talk about it I. I don't think that we can be afraid to talk about it so they're offering this defense but it feels like this debate is probably GonNa get a lot more interesting really soon around movies like this absolutely and as you mentioned it already existed around the hunt now I will just say that as somebody. I'm not a critic but I did see joker and I can't say that I thought that it had a lot of profound things to say about violence in America or what what what Spurs people to violent action I didn't think that that anything there was was terribly deep to me it sort of played like a riff on Scorsese films like taxi driver or King of comedy movies that had a little more depth but that's my personal opinion and is it possible Zabol that this whole debate could affect the way the film has received might have some consequences. I think it definitely could it could have consequences on the box office. If people you know have safety concerns of some kind I it could have consequences on its awards chances because joker is being positioned as an awards play by Warner brothers Joaquin Phoenix who stars as the title character's was received a great deal of claim but if the film becomes too controversial potentially not that that kills its its Oscar chances so there's a lot of impact financially critically in in terms of awards Brent Lang is is the executive editor for film and Media at Variety Joker opens in theaters October fourth brand. Thanks much for coming back on the show. Thanks for having me.
