"I think they have. They have the ability. But I think what it comes down to is that aw it it comes down to if the team is is willing to take the risk of losing a great player to win a championship like Machado. No for instance The cubs the cubs traded for Chapman. They traded away restores glimmer toys. Now yes becoming a superstar and the thing is is that do they regret it. No Hummel you tickled series every team and they both. They vote their career. They had for so many years. And I think that's that's that's where the dodgers are right now. Honest because if you notice the trades that they're making are for nobody like their training and it's it's kind of like like Baker got verlander. We got Berlin of the Yankees. Could have got berliner during the time but we didn't want to give up our prospects during that time. If they would have pulled that trigger they would've won the world series stories at that time because they just gave the astros disadvantage and they give themselves dead vantage to be able to pick up the player that really carried them at that point so it it comes down to sometimes. It's Kinda like you know what I might mess myself up for the next two to three years or four years or however the guy's career goals black what we could tell that. Were champions. Two thing about sports just hypothetically. Let's say valuables WHO York. He's pitching in fucking Detroit. He he smart market team. He goes to use to SMO market team. "I've seen situations where jurors would go back into the jury room and the original vote would be eleven in one one way or the other and then it comes back eight hours later five hours later or the next date completely opposite. I don't I don't I don't have any comment or anything whatsoever. However for those kind of comments I simply took an oath to do my job to do? What's right to follow the rule to the best best of my knowledge and ability? I followed the rules made a decision and felt comfortable and went to bed that night. Feeling comfortable about my sir. What this case did for me was just remind me that while we're all all looking for truth? We always want truth that the end of the trial. We want to know what really happened. All we get is some form of justice we get get what is considered justice. A judge reached a verdict. Right Nello lead goes home. No one is convicted of David. Lease murderer may may not have been a murderer may have been a suicide. But there's still questions and that's that's what this verdict reminded me of is that we don't don't necessarily find out the truth. We are all hoping to finally know what happened to be able to close that chapter and say okay eight either David Lee committed suicide or he was murdered. And we're left really where we were before the trial. Despite the judge's verdict some in Knoxville will always call Rinella lead a black widow but none of that matters to her now the because she leaves the Knox County courthouse. How are you doing right now? Are you guys. Want worried about her before. Leave her alone. Her Daughters Maggie and Katy by her. There's side do you have ray. Nell and her daughters have endured years. There's of whispers suspicions accusations but she is now a free woman dead across your mind you might be leading killer go free. You know. There's a difference between being not guilty and being innocent if the state does not prove its case they are found found not guilty. Doesn't say that they're innocent. So you're not saying that rain. Ella Lee is innocent. You're saying not guilt two two entities of which. I'm aware that know the answer to that question. One is the good Lord above. And the other one is the defendant right Nella Leith and what I do know that she's not guilty. So we're at the end of renationalise L. Elite story or are we it's over for Renault Leaf as far as David. Lee is concerned she can never be tried for that case again. She's been found not guilty. It's over but what about Ed Dawson's del remember. Prosecutors dropped murder charges against Ray Nella when they thought they had conviction in David lease case. So now it's up to Stephen Crump to decide whether he wants to bring those charges back. And we just learned learned that prosecutor crump is planning on going to court and asking the judge whether he can exhume. The body of Ed Dawson the purpose to see if there's any more evidence any more incriminating evidence that points to Ray Nello leave and in the meantime she's a sixty eight year old woman gum back to the farm and she's a grandmother and she lives her life as she has done through all of this. She's brain ella leap. I'm Erin Moriarty. Forty eight hours. And that's my life of crime. This podcast series is developed by forty eight hours in partnership with. CBS News. Radio Judy Tigard. "David leave. Shot himself as I demonstrated for you coming under the wire by asking you to be as diligent legit you have been since we started and to return a verdict of not guilty because the burden to prove guilt is on on the prosecution. St Prompt gets the last word we all. There's thousands and thousands of worth hundreds of exhibits here. We we all. I want you to send that. They leave had Alzheimer's for everything. I'm going to say few -SSUME that he had Alzheimer's sometimes. I want you to assume that he was despondent about that. Because you will see it doesn't matter but we're all this falls apart or anything except Tom. Side is where what's better you all. All round blood sped experienced. It must be horizontal. It must be perpendicular to and it must be facing you cannot lay in this bed and faith in that direction and get that blood splatter on the wall. What does the the only way to get? There is David leaked is facing you on this bad gun side enters where that void is. It's the only elderly is guilty of first degree premeditated homicide the daily. The closing arguments are now complete so so all eyes turned to the jurors assuming that within moments the fate of rain Ella Lee will be in their hands. The jurors have sat through more then awake of trial dozens of hours of testimony and nearly one hundred and fifty pieces of evidence but there are still things about Rhino aleve breath. They'll never here they don't know about the questions swirling around the death of her first husband at Dasa and they don't know about Steve Steve Walker. Just give me your name and what you do in town Walker run automotive shop. He's this guy who seems incredibly sincere. He's credible and he tells us story like it happened yesterday. In fact I had a hard time slowing him down to just give me on the details once he gets started. It's as if he were back at that scene. Let's pause it for a second remember. I told you early on that. This was a case. Unlike anything you've heard before. Well here's the part where it gets really interesting real big salad here and this is a big salad in this town. Steve Walker owns an auto shop in Knoxville. Right now is first husband and dossier used to come into the store for. Steve considered him a friend and there was a connection. Steve's wife was a secretary in Ed's office when had practice law and served as a district attorney general in Knox County. What Steve Walker didn't know is that his wife's relationship with that Dasa was more than unjust professional? Steve found out in nineteen ninety-five three years after Dawson's death he discovered during divorce wars proceedings that the sun he had raised from birth was actually Ed. Dawson's biological child. Ed Dawson had had an affair. Was Steve's wife. It was a terrible shock. This is a soap opera that I never wanted to be came as a shock terrain Nella as well when Steve. I talked Ray Nella. He said he thought she was taking the news. In stride to kind of share this thing she was hurt by Ed. You have been her. You guys had signed in common here. You both have been hurt the truth both of you were us. I I mean in some ways you felt that you were on her side rails. Yes I thought we was on the same team. He could not have been more wrong. I'm going to take you back to May twenty six nineteen ninety-five because what happened. Shortly after Walker discovered the true paternity of his son. Drastically changed both Steve and Ray nelas lives and their versions of what happened are quite different. According according to a police report filed by Rinella she was homeowner farm that morning remember it was made twenty six nineteen ninety five when she heard a disturbance turbans albiric cows. She grabbed her gun a thirty eight and went to investigate. She told believes she found. Steve Quote acting acting psychotic unquote near Ed's grave on the Property Cam. This is from an interview with Ray Nella years later with investigators gators if you miss that to put it nicely. She said it looked like Sivas. Going to urinate urinate. On Ed Dawson's Grave Rennell told police. She began firing warning. Shots into the ground to chase. Awesome away but she says Steve took the gun and fled. That was ray nelas story but st filed his own gleese report. Mark and Steve's version is very different. He says he didn't go alone to our property. He says Brunell showed up at autoshop unannounced and asked him to jump in her car and come back to the farm. She told him she found some papers about about the affair. That Steve with one sees and did she seem upset with you that day that she picked you up colosseum the gun. We was as friendly as we do right now. Uh when they got ray nelas Barnes. Steve says she's suddenly pulled out a revolver and said quote all kill you you son of the bitch unquote and then told him. She'd raise the child round. She had A. She had a tail around her hand and she comes up with it. uh-huh start shooting. Steve says she miss Anderson. Had you know thank God but I did start running. He did start running. Buddy says in his panic. He tripped and foul there. I'm defenseless this point and I talked to him. I said you know what we're doing. I said if you kill me I said I can't raise my kids. You can't raise children. She said it used to be a better shot in that. But I can hit you from here in aimed at gun at me and I just I just closed and we knew is gone who At that moment ray Nella pulled the trigger. Steve says but the gun was out of bullets. There's no no doubt in my mind if she hadn't run out of bullets that'd be. Which story did the police believe? After witnesses said they saw ray Nello drive up in pickup. Steve Steve Bray Nello was arrested and she was charged with attempted murder attempted murder but she took a deal and was allowed to plead guilty to the lesser charge of assault. After six years. Her record was cleared. So what does this say. About what brain Nella may incapable of Josh Hedrick and Rebecca. Legrand weren't her attorneys back then but they are now and they insist this incident doc means attorney told her then the same thing I would have told her is this is a plea that we'll get expunged there is no jail time. Take this deal and walkaway galet. Rinella League did walk away the charge was expunged from her record and the jury at this trial heard nothing about the shooting twenty two years later when she walked away once more a free woman. Thank you for retirement pension so I was really looking forward to deliberating. That's the voice of Michael Carr. No no one of the jurors we spoke to after the trial. You're GonNa WanNa hear what the jurors said because just as a trial was about to end. Something happened that no one saw coming. You can picture like a cartoon you know of. So it was easy for the United States to welcome him back. It may seem an odd choice to allow us well to return to the United States after he had openly expressed his disregard for the nation. However for United States officials lease return less than three years after his initial defection was. Publicity win. It is interesting to consider the psychological effect. People weren't keen on employing communist sympathizer. This was Lee Harvey Oswald at the beginning of nineteen sixty three adrift unable to hold a job in closer proximity to his mother, then he would have liked and most importantly possessed by the desire to be seen, despite the fact that Lee had failed to make a life for himself in Russia. He was still passionate about communist politics. As he and his new wife settled into their lives Lee became involved in a number of communist causes most notably the fair play for Cuba committee oswald's interest in Cuba's political situation would put him at odds with the man he would eventually kill. The issue of Cuba was a black Mark on Kennedy's presidency. He had overseen a failed CIA backed invasion of the country in nineteen sixty one in an incident now referred to as the bay of pigs in nineteen sixty two as retaliation for the bay of pigs the Soviet government supported the deployment of ballistic missiles to Cuba, where they would be within easy reach of the vulnerable United States as worships were deployed and troops were put on alert to be ready for war. John Kennedy engaged intense negotiations with Russian president Nikita Khrushchev the two leaders ultimately reached an accord and the missiles and Cuba were dismantled still the entire American nation. Could sense just how close they had come to nuclear war, though. The missiles were gone the presence of communist, Cuba was still a growing concern. There was a rise in anticommunist. Rhetoric from American politicians following the nineteen sixty two crisis much of this language, specifically attacked communist, Cuba, and communist sympathizers living in the United States. Leah's wall took anti-communist language, very personally as nineteen sixty three dragged on and Lee became more and more frustrated with his dismal job prospects, and the constant noise of American leadership attacking his chosen ideology something in lease napped. He decided that he wasn't going to take it. He was going to become the communist foot soldier. He had always wanted to be. He was going to assassinate an American leader. But his first target was not president Kennedy in early nineteen sixty three Leo's walled with travel to the home of a retired American army general with the intent to kill him.
