S. is the epicenter of the world's pandemic more deaths than any other country in the world president trump announces he's ending support for the well our health organization Paula Brian your response thanks for having me on it was pretty shocking to hear that last night we had predicted last week that the numbers of deaths from corona virus could be as high as forty million over the coming period sh so we're already in crisis but it could get significantly worse trump has his treasury secretary talking to other G. twenty finance ministers today and what what that leader needs to be able to show is America's role in leading multi lateral cooperation and at the same time he's announcing that he's going to cut the legs off the World Health Organization there there might undermining his own attempts to show global leadership it was profoundly self destructive for US leadership it's profoundly harmful for our world and it seems to be nothing other than short term blame shifting and scapegoating in order to distract people from the the failures of this administration to properly lead on the issue but its consequences could be devastating for people hello Brian there are many critics of the World Health Organization but across the board now with president trump announcing that he is cutting the funding for this organization the U. S. the largest funder of the World Health Organization explain what this organization does and why it is so critical and with president trump so deeply concerned about what's happening in the United States one would think why what happens in the rest of the world makes an enormous difference to what will happen in this country well as you say New York is the epicenter of the crisis the U. S. is now facing more deaths per day than has been seen that we are facing our own health crisis here were also facing our own economic crisis here just at the same time you've got seventeen million new unemployed in the United States and even before this crisis started you have forty percent of Americans didn't have four hundred dollars to their name for an emergency and then the crisis hits so you got a health crisis on an economic crisis here you've got that in in many ways even worse in many of the communities that Oxfam works and we work in ninety countries around the world including the United States but you've got this health and economic crisis coming at the same time you've got a World Health Organization this job it is to convene leaders to make sure that the response is coordinated and evidence based is based on science and that there is a truly global response to a global pandemic so apart from the financing of the organization the leadership on the moral authority of the organization to be able to drive global consensus to respond to this help an economic crisis is absolutely critical for president trump the world's most powerful politician to.

"To appear to give us an update on Copa ninety what's happenings in tonight going to be the second tranche of the governor's orders I would like to have the governor actually state yes or no is it a legal for the holy rock for the solid rock church or others to conduct services when the order covers individuals who are must be six feet apart and and no more than ten people in a gathering and whether or not religious organizations are exempted from the rule because until the issues that guidance and order from judge Jamie act and it is not legally binding or Darlene bishop in the good folks of the solid rock church to comply with the nonexistent order because at this point every time the governor's been asked the question whether or not religious organizations and churches synagogues and mosques are covered it beats around the bush and says I strongly encourage them to do it well Joe deters cannot strongly encourage you not to rob a bank it's against the law to rob a bank so whether or not the governor has the power to do that is up to some federal judge down the road to determine because you have the fundamental right to practice your religion and government cannot determine the scope and means of that level of practice of your religion but there's all kinds of government interactions with churches that are are certainly legal when a charge is building can't be built anywhere is gonna be built with the government gives permission to build and when there's fire escapes that's again a situation where the religious organizations must comply let's go to Jack Crumley thanks Willie Ohio governor Mike DeWine beginning the substantive part of his daily update reminding everyone that as of midnight tonight the extension of the stay at home order goes into effect order including determining a maximum number of customers allowed in the store shore order requires each one the retailers to post that number and to determine how many or in in the store I wanna congratulate a number of our retailers who I I've seen I've already started doing this some of them have already posted the number and each store in the whole idea is just to make it a calculation of how can people continue to be safe what number we've also seen some stores that have actually gone to a one way I'll and again the idea is to keep people from brushing up against each other or getting close to each other so that sounds like a great idea if your store that works for for your store basically one way one mile and then the next one going going the other way so there's all kinds of imaginative things at that stores can do but we appreciate what what they're doing some of of taped off distances on the floor some or making sure that other things are done and again I know that our grocery stores are focused as all our retailers are on on safety I know a number the stores already advised me that they have already even before or been wiping off sanitizing the grocery carts that everyone uses and so I congratulate them for that and again to all our social workers out there in retail who are making a difference so that we can continue to eat continue to go to the drug store and those things are essential thank you very very much for for doing that then as we indicated that last week we start talking about wearing the mask actually have what this one friend told me to always keep this with me so I've got this when she made that this morning I believe and so what we're saying is you know someone's wearing a mask that that's that's a good thing it's a good thing for someone to to to do that I think it sends a signal that for all of us to continue to be careful as doctor acting said it's not a substitute for social distancing but can go along with with that that social distancing let me give you an update in regards to our hospital capacity big picture of course is that what you're doing every single day is buying us time by staying home but be very very careful you're buying us time you're buying our hospitals time folks who work in the hospitals word our goal is to double the capacity of our hospitals number of hospital beds as well as a number of of all all kinds of other things that we have for the hospitals can accommodate up to doubling of the people that will be with Bob maybe coming in we have pulled resources and experts from multiple perspectives really to combat this issue major hospitals medical systems have put plans in place for expanding their capacity within their own facilities or have collaborated on facilities so what we're finding is many of the hospitals or being able to do this right within their own facility we have also been building a plant to expand health care at alternative sites beyond what we traditionally think of as a medical care facility representatives from health care systems local governments county emergency management agencies state agencies the Ohio National Guard among others have teamed up in regions of the state to look at buildings that can support larger numbers of patients after visiting various locations and taking a hard look at this looking at things such as distance to an existing hospital conditions say for patients and healthcare professionals and space to meet the region's expected needs the following sites have been selected Seagate convention centre in Lucas county case western university as health education campus in Kaga Kelley Dayton convention center could valley convention center in the Mahoning valley Duke energy center Hamilton County raider Columbus convention center in Franklin County so those all sides have been picked out as additional sites as places where we can expand and put beds and she and see more patients the assessment of other sites is going to continue as we look for additional space should that be needed now the healthcare regions in southern Ohio and southeastern Ohio they have determined that the existing hospital facilities in their areas will with additional equipment be able to handle the surge in patients with outgoing to an offsite location slash with at least a preliminary decision that has been made if that is your your part of the state let me give you an update in regard to procurement and what we are doing again you're buying us time not only to expand our hospitals but you're buying us time so that we can get the personal protection gear in make sure there is enough of it for a hospital personnel as well as our nursing home personnel first responders this is all very very important we have put together a team a team but derived from the public sector as well as the private sector to go out and make sure that we have enough of these items not only personal protection equipment but also other things that are needed the hospitals as other things are needed for for testing so as we continue to move for the crisis we're working to ensure that our health care workers have the personal protective equipment the PP they need tell me just tell you what we we are doing if we can find it in the market place robot if we can find it word by if we can't buy it we're gonna make it or repurpose it as I said before we are much much too reliant on foreign countries that is something that we will have to change after this crisis is over the efforts though that we're making now in Ohio to address this crisis will help us today and I believe will strengthen our manufacturing base in the years to come once we have our supplies we're going to use technology innovation to identify ways to make our supplies last longer prime example is but tell they're doing that they're sterilizing mask what this means is each mask we're gonna be able to use up to twenty times it will go back in and be sterilized and then come back out that's going to give us the great great tool we appreciate all the medical professionals the company's schools and colleges and universities and individuals that have given PP to this effort we've asked them to take a look and see what they could spare what they're not needing right now and that is starting to come in and we are very grateful for that in times of crisis as we've seen throughout our history Ohioans act with great generosity and ship to all those institutions thank you thank you for coming for we've had at least fourteen hundred Ohio manufacturers companies who have responded to our call to try to help us and so I want to thank each and everyone of them the Ohio manufacturing alliance has reached out to each one of these companies just see where they fit in and what help they can give as we deal with this crisis I wanna give a shout out to JobsOhio JobsOhio shift is business development effort is now working to shore up this critical supply chain they know our manufacturing sector very well and they know what different companies can bring to the table and they're taking that expertise and we're utilizing it each and every day of the job so how T. provides input as part of this manufactures alliance and assist the state with rapid procurement requirements and identifying viable solutions I want to thank former governor Casey in the state legislature for having the wisdom eight nine years ago ten years ago to create jobs Heil it is a tool that we very much are using as we go through this crisis our goal as we try to slow down this virus and we've made some real progress by the way and thank you very very much each and everyone of you for what you're doing we're making progress thank you for all that our goal each day as we ramp up and get ready for the surge is to protect our protectors men women when the front lines who I hear from who are in hospitals who are in nursing homes or working in nursing homes who are first responders who are out there risking their lives every single day I want to thank them thank you very very much what you're doing what we're trying to do is to protect you you are the protectors thank you for that in our efforts every single day are aimed at protecting you I will continue to keep you updated on our efforts to secure PP we're going to do all we can to protect Ohioans and those that are working each day to protect us I wanna quoted former governor Bob Taft city is two thousand five state of the state address I thought this is a pretty good quote Bob Ohioans are practical we are a can do people give us a problem we'll give you a solution socialized to everyone who's out there working to do this I want to give you an update about what's happening in the only federal prison in Ohio this is a place called the Elkton federal correctional institution it is located in columbiana county it is a federal prison it houses federal prisoners who does not is not run by the state and is it houses federal prisoners and not state prisoners we know that seven inmates have tested positive we also know that dozens more have shown symptoms and some of these very serious three inmates have died over the weekend of Friday and Saturday I started getting calls about what was going on it's often in in columbiana county from local officials and others who were concerned about that we started looking into this I asked the Ohio National Guard state a surgeon to visit the help in prison in the guard came back to me as well as our health department came back and said there is no doubt that this prison needs help the head of Ohio National Guard Joe Harris tells me that Elton's medical staffing right now is it only fifty percent of what it should be and for every federal inmate at the hospital they need to federal guards standing watch and some of these prisoners are now out in in the community at these hospitals tell me again give me say it this is not a state facilities of federal prison run by the federal bureau of prisons and the United States department of justice it houses federal inmates from all over the country who are sentenced in federal court but Asian is in Ohio it is staffed primarily by Ohioans are fellow citizens their families live there live in the area one in may get sick these inmates are course transferred to local hospitals out in the community so that is why today I'm announcing I've authorized the Ohio National Guard to go into helped imprison to assess this is very limited it's limited in duration and it's limited in scope we have received.
