"Tonight I had you and oh, I love that song Surprise I didn't get that. I didn't hear it much when it was out. No, I said Gary was the one that first played it for me and I said, how did I how did I miss that one? Everybody missed it and the guy had one huge hit teen angel oh no. Mark dinning. Painful, isn't it? That was the one that hit and this one didn't. That's correct. There's something definitely wrong with people. I'm with you there, but we'll do it next year. What? What a wonderful answer. It's not right, but I know they paid them something. They sure did. And they even paid some people that shouldn't have gotten paid. Yes, that would be like most of them. Yeah. Thank you. Exactly. But I have a feeling it was a lot more than $11 million on the farm program. Yeah, good point. All right. Thanks for travel. Do it again. Hey, good talking to you. "Pleasure talking to you Come back and talk to us again please I would love to Thank you for having me This is morning edition from NPR news I'm Rachel Martin And I'm Steven Steve Good morning Just one year ago many cities and states across this country had desperate budget problems This year a lot has changed Here's Nicole Nixon from cap radio and Sacramento Everything was uncertain in 2020 and it was no different for state and city budgets State budgets continuing to hemorrhage Alaska state tax revenue plummeted 42.5% All of that red ink is gonna lead to budget cuts Most states did reduce their spending last year cutting programs and laying off workers But many have rebounded and then some like California The state went from a massive $54 billion deficit in 2020 to an even more astounding $80 billion surplus this year And that doesn't even include billions more in pandemic aid from the federal government In a state led by Democrats this flood of new money has mostly gone towards strengthening the social safety net Rent relief stimulus checks healthcare for older undocumented immigrants And free school lunches for every public school student across the state Well I think it's excellent Michelle Drake is the director of food and nutrition at Elk Grove unified school district which is one of the largest and most diverse in California We met in an elementary school in suburban Sacramento For lunch students picked between cheese pizza.
Larry Elder's Name Mysteriously Missing From Some California Ballots
"Election was not without fraud. There were several instances of people calling me and telling me that they tried to vote for larry elder and his name wasn't on the ballot in places like elk grove which is by sacramento down. It wasn't on the ballot. He was not on the ballot. In fact the woman that called me from riverside to report. This said that she had to write him in as a candidate and the most visible the literally the most visible challenger to nancy's nephew how is he not on the ballot. Exactly how is he not on the ballot and And what was going on to prevent him from being there. That sounds more than just a coincidence to me. There were lots of people that called and this was documented. Not just on conservative. Talk radio but in the mainstream news media that showed up to vote and they were told that they had already voted. So look this male couple of lessons to learn from this. There are silver linings. Take that is that california. Has its fightback we have recalls still percolating against people like george gascoyne are very liberal district attorney. I think california is more motivated than ever. Because we've seen how this is done. So i do think that there is some positive here. I think it is our job in talk radio to hold the gop accountable at three people on the gop yesterday against better judgment. Look i know a lot of republicans are angry with gop but you have to ask them and we have to have them on our programs holding them accountable to out what they are doing to secure our elections and every single one of them. And i had confirmation of this said that there were a lawyers deployed on the on the tab of the gop the national office of the gop throughout the state watching the vote counts. That's a good step in the right door. They were they were they. Watching the the the votes were they. Counting the votes from november. Is that why they were there. That's right there still there. You have back on november. But certainly the i think at the end of this we're gonna see that republicans were able to turn out more voters than they did when president trump was on the ballot against president biden. And so i think we can make some positive steps. We've sent a message to the rest of the country that there's pushback in california but we have to get a handle on the mail in ballots

"Both Granite Bay and Elk Grove. Now to the stories trending this Friday morning this morning, a new round of stimulus checks is going out to Californians. One time payments of $600. The money is going to people who earned $75,000 or less in 2020. So far, the state has distributed 2.5 million states stimulus payments totaling $1.6 billion this morning. Sacramento County Health officials are hopeful that the county will make it to the orange tear before June 15th. Here's health officer, Dr Olivia Siri on the delays. Some of that is due to the testing volume. The other also that we are monitoring is variants, and that could be contributing to the stagnation in cases. So Sacramento County still in the red here. After June. 15th California will still encourage people to mask up and get covert shots. There will be major changes to the Golden Globes awards. New audio it ate from CBS News correspondent Peter King. We think it's probably a combination of both. And this is what experts are finding and researching as we speak. So it is interesting because the prevalence of these diseases you know is probably a little bit more common, depending on the different types of illness or chronic conditions. Obviously, that is the wrong sound. We'll try to get to that report from Peter King. Okay, there is a a new explanation for rising gas prices, New audio and a from John Esparza. Who had the Texas trucking industry, he says the tanker truck industry is having trouble finding drivers to get gas to gas stations coming out of the pandemic, and the pressures of that is put on the business community. We will continue to see that be an issue for trucking into the foreseeable future. A new report found that between 20 and 25% of trucks are sitting idle nationwide because of a shortage of drivers. This year's donations for the big day of giving breaking records in less than 24. Hours. The big day of giving has provided nearly $12 million for more than 600 local nonprofit organizations, doubling the drives. Average donation total. Typically, the big day of giving pulls in about $6.5 million a year in the top five for donations was the YOLO County Food Bank. Oh, is that right? Well, that's very profiled them. He did. Or maybe we drove a few people there. That'd be great if you and if you did many, many things they do great work. Did you know it that food bank By the way, if you donate $1 that provides three meals. That's one for a bark. That's wonderful. I mean, that's better than any fast food joint. I meant yes, yes, it is, Or at least is good. Well, right as good. No question about it. So anyway, they did very, very well. 12 million was the take. And we spent a lot of time on an honor on a radio station yesterday morning for good for good reason, because It seems to be getting bigger and better almost every year and on that money, by the way, is staying locally. We have to keep that in mind that this stays in the local economy and these are very effective, efficient non profits with little overhead so Start a little bit about Presidential presidential politics. There's a we've got in our featured audio clip coming up right now, and it's from Republican pollster Frank Lunch, and he's predicting this morning that Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee for president in 2024. But he says that Trump will lose in the general election. Now, here's what lunch told the sway podcast. That's part of the New York Times operation. It is our featured audio clip this hour. And do you think he has a chance in the next election? If Donald Trump runs for President As a Republican, he's the odds on favorite to win the nomination. You could never win a general election, but I can't imagine losing I'm Republican primary. That's how significant he is within the GOP. Yet he's lost all of those crossover voters that would deny him the chance to win and in general election. So he will be the nominee but not win right At this moment. I would bet on him to be the nominee, and I would bet on him losing to whatever Democratic nominee there was so lunch did a big research project very recently says Trump becomes the nominee in 2024, but loses in the general Hey, will let's also did some extensive research on what's known as the big Lie. Um, yeah, probably read all about this. And essentially, that's that's Donald Trump out there, saying that the whole thing was rigged. Election was right, and that's why he lost 76% of Republicans. Are believing that Not Wow. And this, which is that That's a big number number one and number two lunch went on to say that this could cost Republicans In the mid terms in 2020 2020 22. Because what it does is it takes away credibility from the Republican Party that the hard core Trump supporters still believes that it was rigged. But that middle voter that moderate voters that he won over in 2016 I'm not buying into it. And if they continue to hear the quote, big lie line, it may push them away from the Republican Party that's launches thinking well, And if the internal polling that Donald Trump is doing in his folks shows the same thing that he would win the nomination, but not the election. You wonder would he be willing to step aside? For candidate who couldn't take the general election. Is there anyone strong enough? Is it Is it Christy Nome? Is that the Santis? Is it? Who is it? Does his ego allow that? Yeah, I don't know. I don't know either, right? A lot of people question that. But you think about look, if he runs Pence will not be on the ticket. There's no way they had a bad falling out. Yeah, I'll pick someone else I could see the Santis. You know what? Two Santas? I think I don't know He has designs of his own. Does he want to be on a ticket when his polling tells him that it doesn't have a chance of winning the general? I could see.
Wet Notes - 4-9-21
"This is wet notes here scuba shock radio for april ninth two thousand and twenty one first up today. I'd like to give you an update on new netflix. Documentary see spiracy. You might recall that. I introduced you to this film in a previous segment of wet notes. Well it did premiere on netflix's advertised. And i had a chance to watch. She spiracy a couple of weeks ago. The film is eighty nine minutes long and it can be captivating and controversial. Like i said this is certainly raising a great deal controversy especially as it relates to sustainable seafood and fishing. There's a couple of organizations that they called out into spiracy earth island institute and the marine stewardship council actually marine stewardship council issued a response on their website within days of the premier and every day. I see something more coming out related to the controversy. But i encourage you to watch the film and then decide for yourself about what it is saying like. I said lots of controversy. That's spiracy on net flicks now. Here's something that. I found really interesting. I came across an article that talked about how scientists are using thin wales to map out what lies beneath the sea floor. Now according to to seismologists vaclav kina from the czech academy in prague and john nab elec of oregon state university in corvallis oregon the song of the fin. Whales are loud enough to penetrate the earth's crust and revealed deep structures. I guess they have a network of fifty four bottomed size meter seismometers that the tech sound waves traveling through the ground and they picked up the of whales as they were passing by. Now they have a one hundred and eighty nine decibels song and that song can last from two and a half to five hours as they did more analysis they were able to map the underlying rock structures. According to these guys this is just as effective as those air cannons that are polluting the ocean with all that noise how practical this is yet to be seen. But you've gotta admit it is interesting. Now here's an update on the lectured aluminum tanks situation. You might recall back at the end of february. I told you about luxembourg Decision to exit the aluminum tank business and that they were looking to sell their plants in the us and the uk more. Here's some good news. Metal impact out of elk grove village in illinois is acquiring the graham north carolina luxembourg cylinder plant metal impact is no stranger to scuba tank business. They've been around since nineteen fifty nine and in two thousand fourteen. They purchase worthington. Aluminum cylinders has been providing aluminum scuba tanks to excess scuba and see pearls for a number of years. We've got quite a few from excess scuba over the past couple of years and so we're pretty familiar with metal impacts. This is some good news for the. Us aluminum Scuba tank supply chain. There's absolutely no doubt that. The pandemic has had a dramatic impact on the scuba industry. But i guess it's not all bad news if you happen to be in the right place and it seems that hawaii is those right places especially for new diver certifications. There's a recent article in scuba diving magazine. Titled more hawaiians getting certified than before the pandemic turns out that even though the travel has been restricted to and from the islands more locals are turning to scuba aloha scuba on awad who had reported a one hundred and twenty percent increase in new diver certifications. In two thousand and twenty. They went from twenty seven in two thousand and nineteen to eighty three in two thousand and twenty spurred by whole families going for they're open water certification with some great diving. It certainly makes sense to mask up and dive in our aloha state. Last week i was trying to see if the ocean based climate solutions act of two thousand and twenty was being introduced in this session of congress. Well no update on that yet but i did come across something very interesting. There is a house select committee on the climate crisis now. This committee was created during the one hundred sixteenth congress. That was the last one so it hasn't been around long. But they did produce a climate action plan of two thousand twenty. And that's called the congressional action plan for a clean energy economy and a healthy resilient and just america committee is chaired by representative. Kathy castor from florida and the ranking chair is representative garrett graves from louisiana now. I watched their organizing meeting from march nineteenth. Let's say there's just a little bit of difference on the ideas of how to approach In the approaches in making the us carbon zero by two thousand fifty but as representative castor stated. It's time to turn recommendations into policy. Now i'll be tracking our actions and keep you updated here and finally you might recall. Last year the uss bonham rashard an eight hundred forty four foot long and fibia assault ship burned out of control for five days. Now that was in san diego california. But now senator. Marco rubio from florida is proposing that the ship be used to create an artificial reef down in florida little bit of background. The navy did some cost analysis On what it would take to restore the ship to operational status an estimated that that would be somewhere between two point. Five and three point five billion dollars but the cost to decommission and scrap the bonham rashard would be about thirty million dollars. Senator rubio didn't provide any details on where the ship might be sunk and be become an artificial reef but he did say that it could be done for less than thirty million dollars to scrap the ship. This word Happened it would be. We'll keep an eye on it and see where it goes. Fingers crossed that will have another artificial reef down in florida. Something that big to dive on. Well that's it for this installment of wet notes for april ninth. Two thousand and twenty

"Ride. I hope it warms up. I think it will. At least here. It isn't foggy. You may have fog where you are. There is a fog advisory posted and it is cold out of me at the airport right now in Rancho Cordova, 28 degrees and fog. Ice and Fog and Mary's will. 30 degrees ice and fog at International Airport in Sacramento, 31 degrees 31 in Lincoln 32 in Vacaville. Yeah, it's cold. Well. I know you're just gonna pull up the covers and go back to bed. Think about this. If the temperature is below freezing where you are right now, and you won't know till you get up. Probably Uh, there could be things happening in your yard. You may not like and not necessarily in the way of plants. Plants at 31 30 degrees. Uh, They may or may Not be affected depends on the plant depends on the location because not only is all gardening local, but plant positioning is local to there are warmer spots in your yard that you may find out about rather suddenly. Um But I'm more concerned this morning about Water. If you have a drip irrigation system, you may want to unscrew that little plastic female hose in thinking off your faucet just so it doesn't freeze, crack and break. And you may want to drain out your drip irrigation system undo the end Plug. It's always a good idea to do that before a frost hits, and this was not a planned freeze, or it's not really a well. We'll call it a light freeze. It wasn't planned. Temperatures were not expected to dip as low as they've dipped this morning. Let's get an update on some temperatures right now throughout the area and well, okay, I'll give you this right now. Temperatures are a little bit above 32 in some areas. Such as it zoom in here and take a look here on the map. 34 in Elk Grove, 34 Stockton, um, still pretty cold elsewhere. 28 around Roseville, though, so again check the water. If you have a pet water outside, you may want to make sure it isn't frozen over. Always a good idea. And the bird bath house. The birdbath doing one way to keep a birdbath effective in a fraudster of reasons. If you have a recirculating pump on it, keep the pump on all night. Anyway. That's the name of that tune. This is not uncommon, in fact, a happy anniversary to one of the biggest freezes to ever hit the Sacramento area. 1990 30 years ago this week, December 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th. Low on December 21st 22 degrees on December 22nd 18 degrees on December 24th 23 degrees. Uh, I think I mentioned this before. But that December 22nd low of 18 the high that day where we were out in, Harold didn't get above 32. We're not. It was ugly to say the least. Now, that was ah, Cold Alaskan front that swooped in This isn't what we're having now because of the fog. Possible state colder a little bit longer, But the expected high today is 56 degrees. So that's the good news. So what about as the weather service changed their mind about tonight? Sort of 34 degrees he expected low in Sacramento tonight. And then 40 on Monday night, then back down to 34 33 Tuesday night and Wednesday night. What about Christmas Day? What's the weather for Christmas, Fred? Partly sunny with a high near 54. And then a chance of showers. Christmas night. And the low around 40. So listen. He doesn't a sunny day on Christmas on Friday. What do you do on the radio today? Fred? How about I'll probably share some more frost tips with you just because it's it's that time of year. Also on today's.
As Trump makes baseless fraud allegations, Republicans back his refusal to concede
"In dozens of states from both political parties say there is no evidence that fraud or other violations Played a role in President Trump's defeat. But Republican lawmakers and candidates are following Trump's lead and refusing to concede and that includes Republicans in California. KCR W's Tara Katrina has the run down. Throughout the state Republicans are echoing Trump's refusal and promoting untrue allegations of voting irregularities. They include representatives Tom McClintock of Elk Grove, Douglas, Alfa Oroville and Devin Nunes of two Larry same goes for minority leader of the California state Senate, Shannon Grove. And the top ranking Republican in Congress Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield. Closer to home. Some field candidates are trying to sow doubt too. Carol Webber didn't really have a fighting chance at his run for California's 37th District congressional seat. The Republican was up against popular Democrat incumbent Karen Bass in a very blue part of Los Angeles. At last count, Weber lost by more than 72% points, but even he has refused to concede, citing baseless claims. In this case,
Labor Day: Labor History in Chicago
"Labor Day on Monday, and so we have Ah, incredible rich history here in both Illinois and in the city of Chicago. Regarding the labor movement on Labor Day. In general, thier monologist dot com is a website Max colonel who has studied cities in history, and all that really cool stuff is here to reminisce and talk about the labor history in Chicago and beyond. Max. Ah, let's Ah let's let's talk about Ah The blue color sort of mentality that we have in this city eyes that tied to the labour movement, you think? Yeah mean absolutely. I think that you know, you think about whether it's images presented in film. It's the Blues brothers, which obviously they're musicians. They do They do reference their union card. That will not be a one point them. Yeah, they D'oh They famously on wonderfully, You know, I think it is. It's a It's a part of. It's a part of the city's identity. And you know, I I e having only been been in here since the mid nineties. You know, a lot of that has changed. Fairly quickly. Do you think about what constitutes a blue collar job? Right? You go down to the Southeast side to see the U. S X Steel. You know they're still re working on that site. But there's no there's no labours. It's a park. Yes, yeah, Among other things you think of what constitutes A blue collar job. You think of kind of the concentration of steps over, um, near last Westside like Teamster City. Um and kind of like, where is those where those people laboring? You think about the actual numbers and they're they're fairly small. Um, you know you you still you still have, you know certain? Industries in the city. You know, I always tell people sick I owe still big bass for food production produces more pork rinds, and I didn't know that I didn't know that that's amazing. Yeah, they're they're still there Still the these moments. I mean, you know, you think of other things, which is a variety of trade agreements, etcetera, you know, to buy goodbye volume candy industry, right? Ferrara. Rocks, but they blow up the Brocks factory for one of the Batman am so some of those things that you consider candy, working blue collar and definitely were people working with their hands. But you know, the other kind of The other Those other jobs. A lot of them just changed. I think this will be a challenge for labor here. Going forward labor unions and see already you're you're you're not. You're not, you know, leaping out Citing necessarily been this government lack of intervention. Too much intervention. But you know, he going up against algorithms. You know what do you you're going up against APS. Yeah, that's that's the kind of That's the kind of harder endure another show, But I think that but I think it is. You know people were we seek it out. I mean, people wanted, you know, they want to experience that kind of That blue collar kind of experience, And I think it's hard. I mean, I know it's harder to find. Yeah, you know, you think about kind of whether its associations with people going to a tavern or whatever, you know 2nd 3rd shifters. I mean, there's a lot of There's a lot of change, even the kind of those the social spaces right now you're more likely to find expensive tasting menus on up top bar That's open. So I think there's that there's that kind of shift in the change and declined those in those those professions or they or they happen. They're kind of their hidden from us, right? I always tell people I play some fascinating which you asked me kind of that question about there's always something new. I had never walked on foot around Elk Grove Village. Some people listening probably know that L grow village has one of the world's largest industrial parks. Mathis, right, so there's work going on out there near O'Hare support. Various interested, but you know, we don't really see it. You know, it's not, you know. Men and women out there. You know whether it's your kind of performing manual labor, physical labor, you know, I think the fabric of the city has changed much as well. You think about you know, over a third of the city is Hispanic, Latino land Next, you know that that work has changed a lot. To you know, you might think of blue collar workers being landscapers gardeners. Um, yeah, I know people crave it. I mean, people, you know, it's such a big thing. And you know this so well to three movies to song. Um And you know some industries. It's still their food processing and a few other places, but, you know Now Steele still encounter people I've still encounter people who want to want to see a stillness still now something like that. It's like, well, that's that's really hard to find in the city limits. Um, but there certainly people You know those people working his people? There's people out there doing all these jobs and I think of wealth building trades, You know. So those air still really, um Those were still really well, boss places where he might be worked like that. But those things that you think of, you know, if you know more stockyards. Steel mills is kind of you know, you can sort of see some of the railroad stuff if you go down to South Lumber Street after from railroad. Yeah, Maybe that might be trash passing. So don't Please don't want anyone thinking, right? But you're certainly you know, you could get a little sense of that when you know when I was in Union station two days ago, jumping on the Amtrak cone off one and try again. Young. You see, you know some people people doing track work inside the station and things like that, so it's still It's still there. There's just a lot less of it. Yeah, it's true. It's true, but I mean, I think to the rest of the rest of the world. Chicago has a very, very blue collar. You know? Ah, representation, You know, I think it's a date. I think people outside of Chicago think of us is a very blue collar city. Yeah. Oh, absolutely. I think there's that people identify. It was like they had identified with the You know the blues or kind of Maureen. I'm kind of more contemporary, you know, Tanya, or common Um, and that kind of that's that's really part of the city's fabric.
