"WTO pay. I hear historic inauguration in Annapolis today where Wes Moore became Maryland's first black governor. I'm asking you to believe that Marilyn can be different. Moore was sworn in on the same day as the late Maryland democratic congressman, Elijah Cummings, birthday, aruna Miller also makes history tonight as Maryland's first woman of colors sworn in as lieutenant governor. And as celebrities go, it really is pretty difficult to top Oprah win for you. Of course, there's a westmore supporter from way back she spoke at the governor's inauguration today. Let's take you live tonight to Politico national political correspondent Braxton Booker, also the author of the recast. Always great to hear from you bracton. You were in Annapolis today to take in that ceremony and the speeches and this singular moment in state history, how did it feel out there on a relatively warm day for winter and really this historical time for the state? Yeah, well, thanks for having me. Look, you could not escape the historical significance of this day, right? The day started with a wreath link ceremony at the Annapolis duck, which was many, many, many, many years ago used as a slave port. It was symbolic of the incoming administration for governor Moore to show how far the state has come and not so long of a period, but also how much further it can go with what he hopes he can bring with this new administration. Yes, you mentioned the star studded factor of this inaugural, right? Oprah Winfrey. That was a surprise to many when she kind of walked out with the procession of government more. But also Chelsea Clinton was there sitting right next to Oprah Winfrey. He saw a former attorney general Eric holder there. The outgoing governor Larry Hogan was there. So it was also a bipartisan affair, but certainly the stars were out for tonight. You talked about what more and others did. They reflected on the nation's history by standing at those docks where enslaved people were brought here from Africa. Can you talk about the significance of how that may start some new conversations in our area about history, how to move forward. Conversations that are number one are not easy to start. And people in our area across the country are sometimes reluctant to get involved. Yeah, well, I think that that was a whole purpose of it, right? Is to start off this new administration by taking a history kind of by the horns and saying, look, we don't have to run away from this history, but it's much better if we can talk about this and actually move forward together. He also talked about how he wants his administration to be much more inclusive for LGBTQ individuals. For those who are using his campaign slogan, he wants to leave no one behind. But I think the point about starting the day, looking at the history, looking at the enslaved people, he also mentioned it during his inaugural address, it was like folks who not only were brought to this country and got off at the docket at Annapolis, but also that built to state capitol. He wants to really lean into the history and hopefully have a conversation where folks can feel much more comfortable doing that and he's hoping that his presence in the state capitol can do that. You may have just done this practice, but what is the most significant thing you heard today in Annapolis either from someone on the podium or maybe an observation from somebody else in attendance? Well, look, I mean, I will say that there's so much hope. There was so much hope. And I think all administrations start off, especially day one, when folks are being sworn in and there's so much promise. But this one felt different only because I think a lot of Maryland is a majority minority state, right? So a lot of people felt that they saw themselves or a piece of themselves in governor Moore in aruna Miller the lieutenant governor and had this promise that, wow, Maryland is on the cusp of really changing something because it's not just the top executive with governor Moore being a person of color. It's a ruta Miller who was born in India, who immigrated to this country. So a lot of folks feel like Maryland is really on the cusp of showing the rest of the country what the future could be and for the governor administration. They say the future is now and they just want to get to governing. And that is the big question moving forward with this administration is how are they going to govern? And what are the priorities? Because none of that was laid out in the inaugural speech today. It was all about history, all about the trappings of what this administration can bring, but starting tomorrow, governing begins. Of course, that's the tough part, right? We certainly appreciate the update tonight and hope to speak to you again soon. Thank you so much. That's Brecht and Booker he is Politico's national political correspondent also author of the recast there in Annapolis today. This historic day is Wes Moore sworn in as the latest governor of Maryland

"You're only hearing on WTO. This month, this week marks two months since an explosion leveled a condo building in Gaithersburg. And for several families, that event continues to haunt them, as they fight to pick up the pieces. WTO's Mike Morello sat down with a woman whose insurance expired just days before the blast. Adding to the trauma she realized her insurance on her property expired just days before the blast. It took her two months to find an apartment during that time she says it was especially hard on her kids. "For me is watermelon head and let me tell you with a pencil neck being a watermelon head It's a very difficult balance in that Must be hard to hold your head up all day Watermelon noggin appears You know I mean just it's so fascinating Just behind the scenes stuff in here about this Kevin McCarthy Basically going out in the PRES and saying exactly the opposite of what you said in a private conversation and you said you said Kevin you know I said the exact opposite of what you told the PRES and he said I know Adam But you know how it goes And you said no Kevin I don't You just make no pardon me Up You really a potty mouth sir And that's how you that's how you operate I mean but it just this is this entire party I love the meetings with Trump and that you have two different meetings with Trump that you talk about Which just are surreal in the telling of them right Being a guy that is attacking you so personally that he took your advice on Iran and then there's another meeting Tell us about that Well the first time I met him was right after the famous news midnight run when Nunes disappeared in the middle of the afternoon or evening to go to some undisclosed location and within and do a press conference on The White House grounds saying that he had seen documents suggesting some Obama conspiracy to surveil the Trump campaign and he implied you got any stock insurance whistleblower and had to go to The White House to present them to The White House And we would find out within a few days that actually the source of documents was The White House And the whole thing was a shade And when that happened I was invited to The White House to review these documents which ultimately didn't show anything that Nunes had been suggesting So I go to The White House and I get a message from one of the president's staffers and Trump staff that he wants to see in the Oval Office But I can't burn anyone with me Basically no witnesses And of course I was walking to do it because I didn't want him to misrepresent some conversation we'd have over Russia But I also didn't want him to say that he refused to meet with him So I went to the Oval Office and I walked in and he sitting behind that resolute desk And first of all it was so jarring to see him in that room and sitting behind that desk it was like a scene out of mad magazine And I remember thinking that here he had pretended to be a successful businessman when he was a failure in private practice and in the private sector And now he was pretending to be president And he gets up from her behind the desk and he shakes my hand and first thing he says is you know you do a good job And the first impulse was somebody says that is to return the compliment and say well so you But I couldn't bring myself into it And there was this heavy pregnant pause before I think I said something like thank you And anyway it was I did my best to steer the conversation away from Russia and at one point we were talking about prescription drugs And he said you got on the subject of Elijah Cummings who was very supportive of reducing the cost of description drugs and he said you know it allows you to come to the relationships a lot of nice things about me and I was thinking to myself I've been fertilizer saying anything about you Anyway it was as you say completely surreal Yeah I mean I you know from all this backstage stuff a Republican saying to you keep doing what you're doing I mean you know this party knows does not believe in the big lie does not believe I mean it knows all of it Those everything that you said And I guess history will record what happens here Do you feel like there's going to be real accountability for January 6 Do you have confidence in the DOJ Where do you think we are now We are doing I think on the committee on a very nonpartisan basis everything we should be doing We're moving with speed We have been thorough We're bringing in witnesses at a vigorous pace And those who refuse to cooperate we're going after them with criminal contempt like Steve Bannon As the banner refused to show up in the next week we passed out of committee and off the house floor a criminal contempt resolution which the Justice Department now has And I am hoping and expecting that they're going to prosecute them And this should cost you then Yeah Well in the wake of the Willard hotel and the Rolling Stone piece I mean I just If I were you way more class and grace than I do I'd be going where did I tell you What did I tell you Look there's t-shirts I said You might think it's okay but it's not And he will do it again I mean chairman thank you I mean I can't say enough I wish we had so much more Oh by the way he's also introducing the equal healthcare for all else I know you're doing all kinds of good work beyond just intelligence committee And I just I can't say enough about you And Rachel mandel doesn't have as many t-shirts That's all I want to say No I think you're absolutely right about that And she's not like it's right That's right You are Stephanie That's right You live in his history Thank you for the pothole as well And God bless you Congratulations on the "Schiff welcome back to the pot. Thank thank you. It's great to be here in person. I know i know. I think you're like our second in person. Yes yeah. I don't know. Oh i was going to say the the i was going to be my warm up but that's not a warm get. The california grew back You've got a new book out called midnight in washington how we almost lost our democracy instill could covers both impeachments january. Sixth a lot more. You wrote about A couple sort of bazaar meetings with trump as i imagine every meeting with trump is. Could you talk a little bit about The one after devin nunes is famous Midnight run yes Well this was a completely surreal experience Nunez had gone on this midnight. Run in the middle of the night and supposedly got documents role whistle blower that showed this obama conspiracy to eavesdrop on the trump administration of course was whole charade because the whatever he got from the white house and they went back to give to the white house and nobody had seen what it was and i was sitting in the bunker with the tv on Watching a press conference and And they announced that. I would become into the white house to review the documents. And i looked at my staff and i said i am. You know They said i was invited. And i'm like really that's news to me. And then is the bunker like just a skiff in the house intel committee. Yes yes yes so. Three floors below the capital toward the intelligence committee meets guyane heavy vault doors and all the rest. Cool name yes yes and so One of my staff walks in while this press conference going on With an invitation from the white house to go to see these documents and So i go to the white house They won't let my staff come with me to see the documents were in this big fight over it and and so i'm anthony the national security council talking john eisenberg the the lawyer He's a trying to tell me that the agencies won't approve my staff director seeing the documents even though We both know that's nonsense And i call him out on it and During the midst of this fight One of the president's staff comes in and says the president wants to see you in the oval office but pointed my staff director says he can't come and I was frankly very worried that i would go to the oval office trump would then completely invent some phone conversation that never happened and as he has done many times. Yes yes and staff. I would have no witness and So i argued with a guy for awhile and finally I didn't want the the white house to also say that was unwilling to meet with the president. So i went. So i go into the oval office and there's trump sitting behind this desk. This courageous is the name of the desk. Made from the timber of the ship that went through. The arctic has the storied history. Gotta talk about these desk names. You had another religious. I think it was we'll take your word for i you know maybe wants resolute more often so He comes out behind the desk. I saw just seeing him behind the desk. real bummer. Well of course it was so strange. This person who did not belong behind that desk You know here's this guy who would play this successful businessman on tv. When he wasn't successful. I and now was like he was playing the role of president when he wasn't really the president but he comes behind the desk shakes by hand and the first thing he says. Is you know you would do a really good job. And when someone says that to your natural impulse is to say well so you but i couldn't bring myself to do it and there. Was this very awkward pause Where i think. I just said something like thank you and Also you know that if you said something nice about him later. When you're in a fight he would tweet like shifty. Shift used to say great things about me life in fact during that meeting We got on the subject. I was trying to steer the conversation away from russia. I didn't want to have mischaracterize. Anything about russia So we talked about drugs at one point He brought up. Elijah cummings who had been one of the Leading forces in terms of Medicare negotiating prices and bring the price down and he said You know Says a lot of nice things about me. now. I spend a lot of time. Elijah cummings And i never heard him. Say anything but so finally the processes unity. Everything you need. And i said no your staffing. Let me see my staff director. Come with me to watch look at the documents. And he says well. I don't have a problem with it. and i thought at this point. I wasn't even aware. There were people standing behind me in the oval office But i hear this commotion behind me when the presences he's fine with with having my staff director review the documents with me they start groaning and the president picks up on this and he says you know if they're okay with it. I'm okay with it. Of course they were not okay with it But but the whole thing was just so other worldly Just seeing him in that office where he so clearly didn't.

"The creator and host for righteous idea. Just over half of the US population has been fully vaccinated against Covid 19. As of the first of the month, many states are still struggling with the latest wave of the delta variant. And natural disasters are compounding people suffering on the ground. In Tennessee, For example, Covid cases are on the rise in the last week in August, nearly 40% of them were Children, and the middle part of the state is still recovering from devastating floods. My next guest understands the way our health connects to environmental and social factors and what can make our communities stronger. Dr. Lena when is a physician, CNN medical analyst and Washington Post contributing columnist. In her book Lifelines. She goes through her professional journey as a public health expert and dives into her personal background. As an immigrant to the US she's here to help the Our body politic community makes sense of the latest covid 19 news, Dr Juan Welcome. Thank you so much great to join you today. Let's start with the FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine. Do you think that's going to change who gets vaccinated and why? Well, I think the full approval by the FDA will make a big difference, but not in a direct way. I think that people were in a sense using this as an excuse for why they have not been vaccinated. I think the much bigger difference is going to come from employers from schools, colleges, universities, restaurants, cities, municipalities, etcetera. Now, saying, this is fully approved. There's no reason for us not to do employer mandates. At this point. That is what's going to make the biggest difference if vaccines are required for travel. If they are required to go to restaurants, Two bars you're going to see a lot of people who are on the fence previously same. Okay, this is the nudge to push that I need in order to get the vaccine. Some municipalities are already doing things like that. But, um, it's not at that level on the federal level, and you've advocated for the administration, the Biden Harris administration to get behind a vaccine verification system. A friend of mine who is a computer scientist who studies privacy is also worried about the potential failings of any system. How do we discuss this issue in ways that our rational and complete Well, I think we need to start equating not getting vaccinated with driving while intoxicated as in, you have the right If you want to choose to remain unvaccinated, That's your choice. Fine. But you don't have the right to go out in public and potentially infect others, including my Children, who are too young to be vaccinated, including other people who are vaccinated, But you could still give covid 19 to them. I think we need to start talking about what are the rights of the vaccinated and not be held hostage to this concept of quote unquote freedom. That I think is just incorrect. I mean, what is the freedom that somebody has to potentially give somebody else a potentially deadly disease. I think that the bite administration has done a lot. That's really good during the covid response. I mean the vaccine distribution, increasing supply, of course supporting scientists, but they made a crucial mistake Early on. Not to get behind a vaccine verification system. We don't trust the honor system form boarding a plane, right? I mean, you don't board the plane and say why I forgot my idea at home. Trust me. I am who I am. We don't have the honor system for that. Why are we trusting the honor System for fascination? So, yes, there are privacy concerns. Yes, there are issues that we should be attentive to But come on, Perfect cannot be the enemy of the good here. What I cite in lifelines. My longtime mentor, the late Congressman Elijah Cummings, who used to say that the cost of doing nothing isn't nothing. I think there is a huge cost of the Biden administration not doing enough or not doing anything actually on vaccine verification, and unfortunately we're paying the consequences down. Now let's turn to your book. You said in a conversation with journalist Nick Kristof about this book lifelines that you didn't really learn much about public health and medical school. So first of all, how did you make that pivot And secondly has covid change the way people think about public health? Well, the title of my book originally was supposed to be Public health saved your life today. You just don't know it because I don't think that people understand what public health is at all and that's partially because public health works when it's invisible. It's all about prevention. And so by definition, you can't see something for which there is no face as in what is the face of a child who could have gotten lead poisoning? If not for the home remediation that was done or in Baltimore, where I was the health commissioner retreated violence as a public health issue. Well, what is the face of someone who could have gotten shot if not for the violence interruption that was done? But to your second question about what about in the time of Covid. I think that people are seeing public health and they'll but in the wrong way, I think people are you creating public health only with infection control and because of how politicized covid response has been. I really worry that public Health authority might be even more limited going forward. Mm. In addition to writing books and working on these critical big picture issues, you also talk about them in writing columns in a newsletter for The Washington Post, So we wanted to see if you can indulge us by taking a couple of questions that our listeners sent us over Twitter. Of course. One question is, what do we know about the risk of long covid for vaccinated people who get breakthrough infections? Do we have any information? We don't have complete information. Here's what we know. And I'm going to also put in here what I would surmise the CDC form inexplicable reasons back in May stop tracking mild breakthrough infections. There have been some smaller studies not nationwide, looking at everyone. But smaller studies that indicate that long covid could happen with mild breakthrough infections, but probably would be less common. I think a lot of this also depends on what it is that we mean by long haul covid. If somebody ends up getting ill, and then a month later, they're still having some shortness of breath. That's not really long covid. A lot of people would get that if they get the flu. I don't think that's what we mean by long Covid. I think long covid would mean maybe unexplained fatigue or neurological symptoms or other things that Could be due to having covid in the first place. I would surmise them if you're vaccinated. First of all the chance of you contracting Covid is much less and therefore the chance of you having long covid is much less. Also, the chance of you getting severely ill is less and so I would also survives them. The company should those things will make long covid much less common. Then if you are not vaccinated, however, we don't know the exact incidents. And we had one question from Crystal Kimpson Roberts besides vaccinations and masking what are other self care actions we can take to protect ourselves from the illness? Mm. I love that question, because I think sometimes we are not focused on overall health. We know that the individuals who have the most severe outcomes if they're infected with Covid 19 are individuals with underlying medical conditions. And so that means the healthier you are, the more prepared you're going to be against covid, but also against other medical issues as well. And so if you have a chronic illness, diabetes, high blood pressure, etcetera. Make sure that those are under good control. Make sure that you're getting your preventive checkups. And so if you have been postponing your mammogram or colonoscopy now is the time to do that, because you want to be attentive to your overall health. Look to see that all your other vaccinations are up to date and that includes for your Children. Then I would say, focus on sleep and nutrition, but also helps our immune system and helps us.

"The affordable Care Act has one. The Supreme Court has just ruled the A. C A is here to stay? And now Going to try to make it bigger and better. Establish once and for all affordable healthcare as a basic right of every American citizen. Right. Hey there and happy Tuesday on another, McGee. Super humid South Florida morning, and we've got a lot of good stuff. That's that's going on, though, and we're talking a lot about this yesterday, including by the way that simulated Cruz Got back to Port Miami. Happy day. It looks like things went really well. I've seen some reporting on this. That's a little bit questionable, though. You know, a lot of people are talking about while this is very important because of the C D C one thing I remember. And we talked a lot about the CDC. The no sail ordered the ruling over the past few shows and actually, that's simulated. Cruz doesn't mean anything anymore. I mean, it's good, and it's probably a good dry run test run for the cruise industry getting back on his feet. But remember that the conditions For the simulated cruises were thrown out there by the C D. C under the conditions of lifting there, no sale order, which no longer exists. So all this at this point is just for drill Royal Caribbean Anybody else who goes out there and does any of those test sales? It's not actually a requirement anymore. Anyway, we'll We'll talk about that. We've got a lot to to cover during the course of the show today or actually start with. We have a special guest joining us some perspective on the state of politics. You heard from Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader in that clip. Today is a day where The voting rights legislation. He was moving towards a procedural vote doesn't look like it's very likely to To get off the starting block in the Senate today and joining us Is my Iraqi more. Cummings, former Maryland Democratic chairman, but also the widow of Elijah Cummings. Thank you for taking the time with us. Brian, I'm delighted to be with you today. Thanks. I'm interested to get your assessment of the Democratic Party. Your party at this point in the cycle and some of the Difficulties and perhaps soul searching that might be taking place in the center specifically with senators like Joe Manchin. Oh, So you know, Democrats are in a tough spot right now because they have a slim Plymouth majority. It's practically a 50 50 Senate and they have a big agenda. I mean infrastructure. There are roads and bridges falling down across the country. They're trying to get a bipartisan deal. But if Republicans continue to refuse to You know, play ball in the way that Democrats want them to. Then you know, that might not get past the issue of voting rights, which everyone is concerned about. It's not just voting rights to the election integrity of our entire system. You know, the Democrats have a bill before Congress today called before the People Act. They're trying to take big money out of elections. They're trying to get rid of partisan gerrymandering and create nonpartisan conditions to determine how we draw district lines. They're trying to create ethics and federal standards for ethics in terms of government officials and yet Joe Mansion is saying that this is not acceptable, and he has been joined by all of the Republicans literally. To block this bill, And so it looks like voting reform is not going to happen, even though the American people certainly need a system that works for our democracy. On that particular issue. So you take a look at what is being attempted. And for example, there would be a rollback. Not only would there be a federalizing of election laws it would you start laws in every state like ours in Florida, but also voter I d. And, you know, voter idea if you take a look, I haven't seen a poll in which you don't see solid majorities of Americans that believe that voter I d. Is And should be a requirement of our system. Do you really believe that Americans generally are supportive of something that actually repeal that? So you know, I think the the we're looking at the forest for the trees here. The voter idea is supported actually, by the majority of Americans, no matter where you are on the ideological spectrum. But you know, there are negotiations that need to take place that Republicans unfortunately, haven't proven themselves willing to act in good faith to do those negotiations. You saw Joe Manchin try to put forward Voter ideas as a possibility, and he got no bites from the Republican Party in terms of joining on a compromise solution. So what we have here is Republican obstructionism. They like the system as it works, because you know they they get to use their state legislatures in places across the country where they have the majority. Basically rewrite the rules and rigged the system to support their own agenda, but also their own their own party. Uh and so, you know, we're reaching a dangerous point in this country where we're undermining our democracy, meaning that When parties get to rig the rules in such a way that the people's voice don't get hurt. Our democracy is hurt, and then we are basically imperiling the freedom and liberty of our Children. I mean, you say that it's quite a you know, an alarming charge. Where would an example of something on that scale exists? In other countries. Unfortunately, many Americans don't travel abroad. And so what we've seen is the pattern that we're seeing here in terms of chipping away at, you know, as you well know. Republicans are actually installing partisan people to run elections in places across the country. This has typically been in the hands of nonpartisan officials. And yet, you know when we see in other countries when that happens, democracy has eroded and then it disappears. And then what you have is a dictatorship in an autocracy and because we don't travel abroad much we don't see what the repercussions are. We enjoy a lot of freedoms here in this country. We get to basically say what we want. We get to do a lot of things that we want to do. But that's not true in other countries where they don't have a democracy where people actually get to Have a role in shaping the government. Uh and so we are eroding our system as we speak, and it needs to stop. We need to cherish the democracy. We have strengthen up the foundations of it. And let's move forward hand in hand so that we can build a future that's worthy of our Children. So tear point about other countries, Election integrity and what can go wrong. One of the great ironies the Harvard Electoral Integrity Project. They've ranked our elections going back for many cycles. At this point, we show as being the second worst country in the developed world four electoral integrity..

"Eko fascism ever heard of it or thought about it seems paradoxical but is it or is it a part of American history that has been there all along in an article dated August seven twenty nineteen G. Q.. Magazine yes yes G. Q.. Defined Eko Fascism as quote a belief that the only way to deal with climate change is through eugenics and the brutal suppression of migrants and quote. It's a philosophy that has roots in the American environmental movement. Dating back to the eighteen hundreds rate right down to the creation of our national park system. But let's start off with the recent events that inspired me to produce this episode on August Third Twenty nine a shooter in El Paso Texas Killed Twenty people at a Walmart near the border with Mexico. Nineteen minutes before the first nine one one call a hate filled. Anti immigrant manifesto appeared online. That was strangely called an inconvenient truth in the document the author makes his horrific case for ethnic cleansing as a solution to the climate crisis. I ask myself could. The shooter's deadly words and actions have been inspired by the rhetoric that has been spoken tweeted by the forty fifth president of the United States who has verbally attacked communities of color on more than one occasion this time. It's House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah. Cummings he wrote wrote. This Cummings district is disgusting rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous and filthy place. No human being would want to live there infested usually reserved for references to rodents and and insects. But we've seen the president invoke infestation to criticize lawmakers before you see a pattern here just two weeks ago president trump to protect four minority congresswoman. Why don't they go back to the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came reminder three of them were born here all of them are or American infested? He says a week before his inauguration January two thousand seventeen congressman. John Lewis should spend more time on fixing in helping his district which is in horrible shape and falling apart not to mention crime infested. Donald Trump has tweeted more than forty three thousand times James. He's insulted thousands of people many different types of people but when he tweets about infestation it's about black and Brown people September number two thousand fourteen at the height of an urgent health. Emergency why are we sending thousands of ill-trained soldiers into IMBOULA. If Ebola infested areas of Africa bring the plague to the. US Obama is so stupid infested. He says there's a revolution going on in California. So many sanctuary areas is one out of this ridiculous crime infested and breeding concept infested. He says the President says about congressman. Cummings district that no human would would wanNA live there. You know who did Mr President I did. From the day I was brought home from the hospital to the day left for college and a lot of people put care about still do their challenges. No doubt but people are proud of their commuted. One sound self-righteous but people get up and go to work there the care for their families there. They love their children. WHO pledge allegiance to the flag? Just like people. Oh who live in districts of Congressman. Who Support You sir? They are Americans too. We'll be right back. After after the El Paso tragedy. I started reading articles that referred to the term Eko fascism. There seemed to be more than one. Example of racially motivated terrorist wrist attacks in the news from Christchurch New Zealand to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to California but none so directly connected to the climate crisis as the El Paso shooting which made me deeply concerned about the ways in which humans will react when the crisis worsens. Will it bring bring out the best in humanity or the worst. I began to think more deeply about the foundations of America. Correct me if I'm wrong but post colonial. The American history seems to be filled with examples of ECO fascist ideas and axe our very own declaration of independence refers to indigenous indigenous people of this continent as merciless Indian savages. And yet. This is still a document that we celebrate every year with a national holiday and the principles of manifest destiny. An eminent domain made way for a government led genocide children being separated from their parents put in detention centers and even killed by the American government. These practices are also not new from the slave trade to Indian residential schools. American history has already set precedence every single day that we wake up we are living out our lives on stolen land. This is our history. It's history that we shouldn't turn away from no matter how hard it is to look at it. I know this is a dark subject. But it's an important one one if we don't look directly at our shadows cells. How will we ever heal in a recent interview? In The Guardian activist writer. Naomi Klein referred referred to this concept as climate barbarism. because she connected the dots. So well I'm going to read her words here. She states quote white supremacy emerged. Not just because people felt like thinking of ideas that we're going to get a lot of people killed but because it was useful to protect barbaric but highly profitable actions. The age of scientific racism begins alongside the transatlantic slave trade. It is a rationale for that brutality. If we were going to respond to climate change by fortress seeing our borders then of course the theories that would justify that that create. These hierarchies orchids of humanity will come surging back. There have been signs of that for years but it is getting harder to deny because you have killers who are screaming it from the rooftops unquote and then Naomi speaks of the environmental movement quote when you have a movement that is overwhelmingly Wellm Ingley representative of the most privileged sector of society. Then the approach is going to be much more fearful of change because people who you have a lot to lose tend to be more fearful of change whereas people who have a lot to gain will tend to fight harder for it. I have had many many conversations with environmentalists over the years where they seem to believe that. By linking fighting climate change with fighting poverty or fighting racial justice. It's it's GonNa make the fight harder. We have to get out of this quote. Mike crisis is bigger than your crisis. I we save the planet and then we fight poverty and racism them and violence against women unquote. That doesn't work that alienates the people who would fight hardest for change unquote as middle middle class educated white women WHO considers herself an environmentalist for social justice. An ally in the struggle for racial equality and racial equity. I felt compelled up to bring the issues of Echo Fascism and environmental racism to the Isan Conservation. podcast I hope this episode shines light on our shadow selves an offers inspiration on how to move forward will start this episode with a close. The camps protest attended on August Thirty First Twenty nineteen scene in downtown San Francisco. I'm on my way down to the close the camps protest in downtown San Francisco right in front of the ICE building. This protest today is part of the month of momentum that has been a month long a series of events and protests and ways to get involved in the movement to close down the concentration camps that are are at the border of the United States and Mexico so every day when I turn on the news and I hear more stories about the conditions of the camps and the fact that children are in cages. Children are dying people are dying in the camps. I I'm I'm basically as heartbroken and petrified as I am about the climate crisis CICIS I see these both the climate craigslist and our humanitarian crisis. That's happening at the border right now. As one in the same basically the way that we're treating a world is the way that we treat ourselves and other people and eight and so I needed to do something and so I decided to come down and spend my Saturday morning here. At the close the camps is protest down at ice in San Francisco on August thirty first twenty
