With a Bloomberg sports update, I'm Tom Rogers. Your listening to masters in business with Barry riddles on Bloomberg radio. I'm Barry Ritz, you're listening to masters and business on Bloomberg radio, my extra special guest this week is Eric beltz junis, he has been serving as the senior ETF analyst for Bloomberg where he has worked for the past 20 years. He is co host of ETF IQ on Bloomberg TV, co host of the trillions podcast with Joel Weber, who's the editor in chief of business week and author most recently of the bogle effect. So let's start with Jack bogle's early career. He writes a senior thesis. He went to Princeton undergrad. He did. That thesis seemed to have sealed his fate. Yeah, it did. It was a thesis about how the asset management industry should be better stewards. It was just basically very much, again, the seed was planted. Also, the prince of thesis is interesting because when he was searching for an idea, he went to the library, didn't know what he was going to write about. And just found fortune magazine randomly random stumbles across a magazine. And on the cover, it didn't even say mutual funds. You had to open it, and it was like big money in Boston or something. And it was about mutual funds. I'll write about this. And there were a lot of things that came together that were serendipitous. I would say that thesis was the first one. So bogle eventually gets a job at the Wellington fund, which had been around. I don't remember if they were the earliest mutual funds or one of them. Yeah, there was like ten funds that were came out in the 20s, but they went through the 29 crash and survived. And they actually was a balanced fund that pat buffered a lot of downfall because it was a conservative stocks and buttons. So what was he doing it Wellington and how long did that last? Join Wellington, I want to say early 60s. And then the guy who ran Wellington was like, I'm out of here. I want you to take over the company. Vogel was, I think, I want to say 35, pretty young. And they had a problem. They were losing money because the 60s were like a great. It was like the last decade. Where all the people taking money were like, Kathy wood and stuff. Except of their day. And Wellington was like boring. It was like the value investors that we make fun of them. And so they're like, bogo was like, I was selling bagels, nutritious bagels. Everybody wanted donuts. So I figured I gotta start selling donuts, so we're gonna be out of business. So he teamed up with a high flying growth manager, which is interesting because it was the fourth or 5th one on the list. This company wasn't very well known, but they had a fund called the I vest fund. But the first choice he had was Franklin and capital group, and they didn't say yet, they said they declined. Now, I theorize in the book had one of those. This is an acquisition. In other words, their private company he offered to buy them and fold them into Wellington and they said thanks but no thanks. Yes, they did not want any part of merging or any acquisitions with him or Wellington. He finally gets this growth manager down fourth or 5th on the list. And it goes well for a while, you know, they've got the boring stuff and the arc stuff and but then basically the stock market goes into a bear market. 66 is the peak following the post war. 71 72 or 73. And 73 74 was the by the way, parallel to O 8 O 9 about a 50. Very similar. It's 57% correct. And right before that, the people who were at Wellington changed the Wellington, his new partners changed the Wellington fund to be much more equity oriented at the exact wrong time and even bogle had a memo saying we can't do this and he's like, no, this is the right way. Trust me. Anyway, so their growth funds fall off a cliff. They go down worse than the market. But the Wellington fund goes down the same as the market, the same 35%. It doesn't buffer at all. And I think this was probably had to be one of the most pivotal life moments of bogle to feel he betrayed himself. He betrayed his mentor, he sold him. He sold it all out. And these guys had voting control of the board. And they got into massive fights, the clashes were historically bad. They were basically pissed off at each other. Blaming each other and they fired him. Even though later in life, he's always like, I was the victim, but stories are he wasn't a picnic to deal with. He's a big pain in the bed. Yeah, he's a pain in the blood. Anyway, long story short, he realizes there's a loophole, instead of being fired and going away, he's like, I'm actually the owner of the chairman of the funds themselves. And so that gave him some leverage to sort of dig in and fight them. And they had to come up with a resolution. And that the board would agree with. And so one of the

This is Bloomberg businessweek inside from the reporters and editors who bring you America's most trusted business magazine. Plus, global business finance and tech news as it happens. Bloomberg businessweek, with Carol massar and Bloomberg quick takes Tim stenog on Bloomberg radio. Hi everyone, welcome to the weekend edition of Bloomberg business week. Jackson hole, fed J Powell all top of mind for the newsroom this past week, and coming up, we're going to actually zoom out a bit for a look at how inflation and the economic slowdown have impacted the business world this summer and really all of us consumers. We'll also get a pulse check on the venture capital space and dig into the retail sector with the CEO of petco, plus our cover story details the causes and devastating effects of a contaminant found in a Michigan baby formula plant earlier this year, it plays into the ongoing nationwide shortage. So troubling on many, many levels. All right, all of that and more to come, we begin though with the tsunami of shutoffs. Surging electricity prices spurring the worst ever crisis in late utility payments. It was a Bloomberg big take from this past week. You can also find it in the economic section of the new issue of Bloomberg businessweek magazine that is out now on newsstands online at Bloomberg dot com and of course on the Bloomberg terminal. Will wade Mark chediak and Ben Holland wrote the piece, will is Bloomberg news power and renewable energy editor, and he joins us now. Well, it's good to have you with us. So this is something that some 20 million U.S. households are dealing with right now. That's about one in 6 American homes that are unable to pay surging electricity bills. Why? Well, the basic issue is that the price of electricity keeps going up. It's about 15% higher than it was a year ago. And it's probably going to keep going up because it's all tied to natural gas. And natural gas prices have doubled from a year ago. You know, it's interesting what I think about. And whenever I talk well with our European colleagues, they're like, you know what? We've been dealing with this for a while. Certainly because of the Russian war in Ukraine. Give us a little perspective as we kind of even zoom out a little bit wider. You know, that's totally fair. It is good to put it in a global context. Because we're looking at this issue here in the United States. And it's serious. But we're thinking here about people who can't afford to pay their bill. And if you go to Europe and Asia, there's places where they're worried about not having enough electricity to go around, especially come winter. It also comes at a time when interestingly enough, government aid that happened during the coronavirus pandemic dried up. So what's the connection between a lack of government help and then an inability for so many millions of Americans to be unable to afford their bills? Well, during the pandemic, the government passed actually with state governments, many states had policy that said you can't shut off people's power. And that was because so many people were out of work. Most of those policies have ended mostly towards the end of last year and being in this year. But then in a lot of states, especially up north, there's winter shut off moratoriums every year. They say you can't shut off high power when it's really cold because literally people can die. So we're coming out of both of those things right into the spring and in spring is when everybody started saying, wait, what's this inflation thing? Why is everything so much more expensive? So a few months down the road brings us to now and that's when we're seeing people's bills have gotten high. People are behind on their bills and the utilities give people grace periods and now they're like, well, the grace period is over. We're going to have to start shutting people off. I guess they will with the story like this, what's great is you guys zoom out and then you zoom in and you talk about one family and one individual Adrian nice. Tell us a little bit about when you started really get to the granular level. What jumps out for you? Well, I spoke to her several times while I was doing the reporting She's 45 years old. She's a house cleaner. She lives with her teenage son in Minneapolis. And she's just been really struggling. She's a house cleaner, so in 2020 when the pandemic happens, one of the first things that happened is all our clients said, sorry, I don't want you to come over. She's been getting work coming back. In the past few months, in the meantime, she had a utility bill that climbed up to like 3000 something dollars. She was getting shot off notices from her local utility. And she didn't have it. You write that even though a larger family lived in the same unit that she was in before because electricity electricity prices have gone up so much. Just for her and her son who weren't using ostensibly that much power, their bill was even higher just because of the rise in prices. Yeah, exactly. Last year, she was sharing the department with a friend and the friend had two children. And then the friend and her kids moved out. So there were two people instead of 5 people in the unit, but the power bill is basically the same. Even with much less consumption and of course she had to pay all of it herself. Natural gas really, there's just not enough of it to go around all around the world. The U.S. is the biggest producer of gas in the world. But we export a lot. And if we chose to keep some here in the U.S., so prices would go down, then there'd be more potential power shortages in Asia and Europe. Our friends over there really needed, especially since the war has completely upended the gas market. You know, it reminds us of how fragile things are. I think about will for such a long time in the U.S. because of fracking and just a lot of development in the energy space, carbon fuel specifically here in the United States. We talked about having a glut, right? It was natural gas was so cheap, but how quickly, unfortunately, with the war Russian war, in Ukraine, how things have changed pretty quickly. Here are the three stories that are driving drive time sports. What's driving the show brought you by banning Lewis Ranch, a place for life's moments. Here's story Number one number 28 Million streams flow. Thanks course. That was the ovation last night. The audio courtesy of Cardinals tell Vision, Nolan Arenado with a standing ovation at Coors Field last night in his return To Denver for the first time as a member of the ST Louis Cardinals. Rockies went on to win the game, which was Pretty satisfying, but I'm not surprised. Like there's so many people on social media last night like, Oh, classy Rockies fans all class. First of all, half of them are Cardinals fans. Okay. Second of all the half that Iraqis fans. Half of those fans are only there because course fields a great place to be. And has nothing to do with the baseball team and then the other half, So we're really talking about So 50%. And then 25%. And then you have another, uh, 10% of people who are cheering Nolan because of all the memories and all that, and then you have another 15% that we're doing it because sharing for Nolan Arenado Is like booing Dick Monfort because what was on display last night or what we were reminded of is the biggest mistake. In the history. Of the Colorado Rockies and maybe of Colorado sports. I love to hear a bigger mistake. That Colorado Colorado sports team is made. I mean, just the whole thing. Signing him to an extension that you knew you didn't want him to sign. Uh Alienating him. Failing to put a team around him. Trading him for Austin, Gamber and Peanuts. While paying $50 million for the privilege to trade him to the Cardinals. That's what you were cheering last night. That's what you were cheering last night. You weren't sharing Nolan are nado. You were cheering the biggest mistake in the history of Colorado Sports and By cheering you actually wanted to boo And you know what? Maybe you should have booed Nolan Arenado. Maybe I had the wrong take. No, because again, it's the No win situation You've been put in by Dick Monfort. Because if you boo Nolan, then it sounds like you're booing Nolan Ah, Renato, when you're actually booing the mistake that the Rockies made, so I guess cheering would be the better way to go. Either way, it is super depressing what happened last night? That's at the crux of the matter. But just understand like when they're like, Wow, what a What a classy move. Rockies fans cheering Nolan welcoming him back with open arms. Yeah, they weren't mad at him for wanting to leave in the first place. Like, Where was all this stuff about? Will they boo or not know he's gonna boo have the people at Coors Field there? Cardinals fans. 25% of them. Don't even know there's a baseball game going on in front of them. Oh, well, they boo hoo! Or will they like it was And I fed into it. Because it's on the topic, but I knew that he'd get a standing ovation. It's not some great class move by Rockies fans. Even if you don't Like Nolan Arenado. You can understand what he represents. And, uh Sharing for him is like booing Dick Monfort, but I mean, he doesn't have the self awareness to understand that so Again super depressing nine at Coors Field last night. But the Rockies ended up winning good job. Elias Diaz for hitting a walk off home. Run. Uh, story number two won't wait. Have audio hang on. I get the audio this who happens when you're on your own producer. Here we go. Mhm. You know what that is? I don't have to play more of it. And in fact, I'd be kind of worried that I get in trouble for that. I think it's okay. Audio, courtesy of HBO sports an NFL films. Are we good? Now, Hard knocks has made their decision and it is not surprising. In the least it is the Dallas Cowboys. And I, for one am disappointed. Yes, obviously given where we live. Ah! The Broncos would have been Infinitely. More intriguing from a local perspective, but I think from a national perspective It would be more compelling. They have a quarterback competition. That's compelling television. The Cowboys were chosen because they are the Cowboys, and I don't like that hard knocks has made very lazy decisions. I'm a big fan of their work. I am and I will watch the show is a lazy choice. The L A teams were lazy choices. The fact that you had two of them didn't make it any less lazy. In my opinion, the Raiders were lazy choice. They used to work for the most intriguing teams. They don't do that anymore. They go Brand Raiders brand. L. A brand Cowboys brand. Teams not compelling. In.

Because the Rockies fans The true Rockies fans that were there even though they wanted to give the standing ovation to Nolan are nado deep in their hearts are very, very sad. Last night was a very, very sad moment. For the Rockies fan base. So to be lifted up like that, at the end of the game was satisfying, and the fact that half the stands had Cardinals fans in it. Little bit of a win again. They say it's the small victories in life, right? Well, when you're Iraqis fan, it's absolutely the smallest of victories that you have to take and enjoy. Because they are so few and far between. And in the grand scheme of things. They are just so small. That win last night means nothing. Grand scheme of things. Nothing. Not going to change one.
