Dr. Lydiana Garcia Discusses Teen Sexual Abuse

"Have Dr Louisiana Garcia here for Tell us where you're from again. What city of practicing. I am originally from Puerto Rico. But I'm practicing in West. La So thank you so much for being here. We're GONNA be talking about a heavy topic today so I'm going to go ahead again and give a trigger warning. This episode is going to be about sexual abuse in teens. And we're going to talk about the impact that that has in the family because we can't avoid it. There is going to be effective at the family. Has Dr Liana Garcia? Can you tell us what defines sexual abuse? Yes so there's many different ways of defining Ed but in general is any unwanted on unsolicited. Any kind of sexual interaction. It could be a touching cosby of exposing themselves. It could be on want to touch. It could be all the way to a penetration or any of that kind of sword but in general is that unwanted unsolicited nonconsensual touch and specifically with sexual abuse. Because from my understanding sexual abuse is in regards to children and sexual assault is in regards to adults. Is that correct? Well I guess it's also depending on what kind of Big comes up and it can go so many different ways and yeah but in general child abuse from how it's define is anything related including pornography. That's why I mentioned the whole part of on wanted exposure and with sexual abuse there was one parent that had asked this in social media. Can children sexually abused one another as well? Because the conception is that adults abused children but can it be the other way around I believe so yes and Independent on the stage with the law becomes tricky about the ages but definitely if one byner is showing any force any unwanted unsolicited nonconsensual way of demonstrating sexual behavior than it could be considered on the the rooms. Okay and we'll touch more about this in a little bit. Do you have any statistics about teens? That have been sexually abused. Yes this is based on the R. A. I N. Dot Org Wayne in. It's about sixty percent of twelve to seventeen year olds are victims of sexual abuse and thirty four percent on the age of twelve. So is really high and they have this kind of visuals that are it can be very intense because they like every eleven minutes a child protective certain service substantiates finds evidence of a claim of sexual child sexual abuse and in terms of girls. It's about every four to every five girls are being sexually abused. So and females ages sixteen to nineteen hundred four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape attempt rate or sexual assaults. Yeah and these are statistics that they have from those that have reported it but there are still so so many more that go unreported as yes in also depending. But I've seen a lot in the Latino culture as well 'cause we don't we don't talk about it and then a lot of the times most of the cases the perpetrator. It's someone in the finals of that is some good than have a lot of back in the funniest well. Yeah that statistic is actually high. It's more commonly to be abused by someone in your family versus than by a stranger which is contrary to what we're taught stranger danger. Yeah and that's why right now you should. It's more about teaching children since their shoulder. Not Wait till they're adolescent to start recognizing besides the basic of not here not touched there by anyone but also to start recognizing very kind of instinct and whenever they feel like. Something's not o k into also not promote secrets because you should lead the perpetrator someone in the family or someone that defending knows includes a lot of secret like we don't tell this don't tell anyone etc etc yeah and bribing as well to maintain that secret so it's always important to just be in communication with your child regardless of age even if they're a teen as tougher. But what are the common signs that your team is being abused? Yeah so they were usually see our drastic changes or it could be very slow. Changes INCREMENT CHANGES IN THEIR DAILY FUNCTIONING. For example in sleep patterns may be right now. They're sleeping more or sleeping lies and any kind of saying that they're having nightmares or difficulty falling asleep new fears of not wanting to go somewhere sometimes issues with eating in their school. They might have some their grades might go down or they might not want to go to school or they might not want to be somewhere. If it's someone in the family day suddenly the WanNa go to a place that they're used to going. They can have mood swings they can have ability. They can become sometimes violent or express anger in that way but usually like any kind of sudden changes in a lot of clients also changes in their appearance. A lot of times. There's a great movie. I will not remember the name probably that I love it speak. That's the name he has in. It's a beautiful movie. I mean I work with this but is a great movie to display that whole house. She changed as a result of the in that case it was the rape in her appearance. She started to wear hoodies and wanted to go outside in in their disabled and her hair was messy and Baggy clothing. And all those not wanting to be with her friends stuff. Like what yeah. I've often also heard of people that also eat more to gain weight to appear less quote unquote attractive as a defense mechanism. Where the other way around as well. Because if they don't need the Loser Meneses of that kind of stuff. You can go to another year. Any of these signs that you have mentioned can also can also be considered as the same signs to be able to notice if your teen has been sexually abused in the past or is being sexually abused. Guess I would say yes. And if it's something that has been going for a while and the team does not feel comfortable with the parent. It might be a little harder for a minor to kind of express themselves to the parents or try to hide it but a lot of times parents start noticing changes. Even if it's subtle and I would always tell the moms in the pairs that come to my practice is alarms. They know that something is wrong. They might not know what it is but they know something's wrong. I often hear that it's drugs in our culture or their friends there with the wrong crowd and all those who wished that could happen as well as drug could be a coping mechanism. Yes it can but typically if your child has not been engaging in that and there isn't any sign of that and your child has disclosed sexual abuse we cannot invalidate that an go towards another extreme. The let's talk about the best way of handling that so if you're team discloses that they have been abused than what is the best way to handle this. I always recommend to not go against it. Like to not say that did not happen to really. Just listen to them and believe them from the get-go the more than the parents resisted. Then it becomes this horrible dynamic fighting of. Who's right or WHO's wrong. Any could be so detrimental in the teens kind of health journey if they feel that the parents believed them as opposed to not believe in

Do you do now that on free for all this is event huddling if your people in the next because I hear all a cacophony of like pet sounds in there, some people call poops, they think you can't hear it some people flush go in immediately flush poop, so that you just hear flushing instead of Nell? And I I don't care what side. While I put in a public bathroom, but it's Kurt Assi flush. Okay. Yeah. It's that's more about the okay? Trying to mask any pets. Did you mean actual animal noises, or the beach boys beach boys, I will say that if I'm in a public restroom, and I have to shit I will self conscious about like the sound that that's going to make. So I will headphones, and if I put in I'm listening to I hear it. I don't give shit. What's happening? Go hog wild. You don't do that in women's restrooms? We just listened to selene Dion and here. Always in couch in a public restroom. You should like fake a really important phone call. I don't care. You just do what you have to do. So much business. All the who's that guy insider trading. But we should invest the money in that let me another kind of lateral question on this though, if you're in a situation where someone like your significant other is taking a shower, and it's one bathroom. Maybe it's a hotel. They're taking a shower, and you really have to shit like it's an emergency. Are you holding it or are you going in while they're in the shower and shitting move if it's a hotel, I might go to the lobby because there's a. Forgot about that. If it's tight your house or cabin. Then I'll do it. I'll have to do it. You gotta do what am I going to do take a shit in ziplock freeze it so that she doesn't find out and you'll find it like what does that? Is to get you put in the free. Yeah. Like wiser shitting the bat. Yeah. She wants the freezer. What is this? It's like, oh, it's brownie batter. It's going to surprise if your birthday a little nibble really wanna taste it. It's a surprise. She throws it away. Nothing. Mine was talking about like we were talking about growing up in the mid west. I guess somebody was like, you know, when you take your shit stick. And you you break up like a big Pook to make sure it flushes in everyone in the room was like what like, you know, every family has like shit. Stick was a stick. You keep in the bathroom closet to break up. Big poop, so they flush or like now like, no shit. Stay and this kid he grew up with shits too. Yeah. And he thought it was like a mid west thing and every so he's like very confidently in the room, but we've all been there. And everyone's like, no, you're disgusting. Yeah. Allen works to the left side goes pick and roll for doc in the ball knocked away out of bounds off of dock ins, a lot of contact underneath Memphis got away with one there. And the Tigers will get it back, but they are suddenly down by nine put a game of runs. Four five six points one team five or six the other which seems going to settle down the last ten minutes here. Run. This thing out. It's Tigers come back here and get a couple of buckets here. Get back down Martin looks over at penny. He calls the play as he brings it into the front court against his zone. Hairs Harris on the right side. They go to Davenport at the right of oh, he'll stop. He'll pop. Nobody gets it. Right back into taco. He puts it up and taco just picked up his fourth. That was a smart play by Davenport once that ball missed. He got it right back, and he went right into the chest of taco fall. Davenport's going to get to is only got four points in this game. He's only. Three rebounds in the game. One of those is that offense aboard the first free throw up in now decision time, and you think Ronald come in. And he will. So they'll save taco ten thirty five to go in the game. Let's remember that falls fourth probably son. You weren't supposed to pick up their pool of foul. Let him have it. More common for Keven Davenport, knocks it right down. So he's got six to the game now, and it's fifty three forty six or seven point game. Just where we were at the half, some nine minutes and twenty five seconds ago. There's some pressure by the Tigers try to bother Amir..

I am not able to do that. All the water and over the whole and then like whole it, you can certainly try. So as you go over Yasha goes and grabs the head of the barrel and try and force hold it. They're working on liens, tiny hot need fiberglass. Okay. Time. All right. So how much time, ten minutes, eleven minutes? Yeah. Okay. Well, knees, you mix check with the office vantage. Damn it really. Twelve twelve. You hold a barrel over and it seals. So you're kind of holding their spring around the edges, the barrel immediately fills, and you know, kind of like trying to to cork the home of this barrel. Is all around the holding. Don't swim down on the outside the outside, go what? Brooke. Something. Do we have a mattress or something like that? Do we have anything like mattresses in this area there? There is a cots there is actually mattress in the captain's quarters as the one mattress all drag that out and jump over the side. Push up against the whole fabric. I'm gonna. I'm gonna sure new in. Tire selves off, and I'm also I'm going to cast water walk. If you're into it on real, we can still go underwater though on the surface if you choose to. So so yeah, I'm giving I'm giving you. I'm gonna give you water walk for the moment because you're probably stronger than I am. I should probably not do this and hold that safety line. You're talking about. So you've got water walk. Throw the mattress in jumping after try and go under. Essentially like stand on the surface and then kind of below. There's a section. Yeah. You get the mattress, what do you do? Press it against the outside of the ship. Okay. The current perception because under the water on certain wear, a large scrape section where a lot of the re- kind of pulled across the hall. From the twenty. Yeah, glancing down as you're about to go, help you look and you can see all the damage has taken this Fisher. There's one section where it looks like a heavy grooves carved out from the last impact and there you can see just this faint shift of the the water kind of pouring through that that gap, you take hold down the matches. Pulls against it. It's their emplaced the sections kind of holding it. You're not sure how long it'll hold their without anything. Down below just alright, fix it. Now gotta get it up and start pulling trying pull the barrel. This has toll starts hanging out, nail left and right. He bought a digital tools to make it super super light gallons over there. He's hammering in the nails pieces of so two barrels down, pull the part to get materials to go ahead and try and patch this part of the water bucket for gauge. Correct. He minutes. Okay. All right. Still doing okay. On the top of the crow's nest is that what it's called goes very far away from the waters. Great. You're there. You're having to like because the ship is still moving. You're having to hold it in place while like walking them the side. It seems to be holding self okay for the time being just from the pressure of the water. But starting to slide off as it goes, it's one of those. It's a weird scenario where like now that it's blocking the section, there's no necessary suction the pressure of the water. But as it moves, it is kind of sliding sliding along with a little take the sword Shelvin. All right. So just helping the repairs. Go ahead and just make general de twenty check. Two. Oh. Twenty. Twenty gallons hurt if you needed that. Fucking. So gallon sees you. Let me ELD on. Place it over. He doesn't himself and he goes the town and earns us keep since. And my one begins taking the best parts of the barrel that Yasha helped them break place. Hold this here starts down down eventually over the next twenty or so minutes takes the cast the spell. He.
