Water Walking 101

"Water walk in one oh one. And might put in a seventh for extra credit if God blesses us with the time. But I noticed that a lot of times when we get in a situation like these disciples were in. Maybe like you're in right now with your job or maybe like you're in right now trying to figure out what to do with your family. Those kids your quiver is full right now. How many quiver is full and you quiver is. To be quite honest, your quiver is quivering. Though Bible humor quickly. and. When we find ourselves in these situations, there is a tendency to blame you know the disciples like the fight. And liked to argue with one another any chance they got. But yet the storm brought them together in a unique way in Matthew Chapter. Fourteen. Trial sometimes tighten our focus. And so one thing we don't see in this storm is Peter John Going back and forth there Andrew and Bartholomew talking about who's rowing the hardest? They just need to make it through the storm. But what really got my attention was a detailed that I must have skimmed over like I mentioned in today since we're in class I, want to study a little more deeply. Is that blame doesn't get you through a storm. And the detail I noticed in Verse Twenty to present on the screen for me. Again, it said that Jesus made the disciples get into the bowl. Jesus made the disciples get into the boat. You're not people say the devil made me do it. Jesus made the disciples get into the boat. He didn't ask them. He didn't recommend. He didn't suggest, and now would be one thing if he didn't know but he's the son of God with all wisdom. So. How did the one with all wisdom send them into something that threatened their life? I want you to write down point number one in the class and put it in the chat. Certain storms are unavoidable. Just need you to know that certain storms. You know what I mean by storm, right? It's not always physical. Sometimes, there can be an emotional storm. Sometimes there can be a psychological storm. Sometimes. There can be a relational storm. You know these storms we get into sometimes we are so busy trying to figure out how to get out of them. Then, we expend all the energy that we could have spent trying to learn what God wants us to learn through the storm. There's two ways to get through the storm and. As a survivor. And how many know is good. Just celebrate that you're still here. In case, you had a bad week I'm gonNA give you fifteen unscripted seconds. To praise God for the storms that you have survived. You can sit there. This been sunny in your neighborhood. But if you survive some depression. And if you thought were going down but. Give them praise. Survive the storm is a miracle to survive. Abuse is a miracle. To survive in economy that is falling apart but God provided is a miracle. But then God says you you can be a survivor. But then if you want to there are certain people that they decide I'm not just going to be a survivor I'm going to be a student of the store. And I I am learning to learn from the storm. I'm learning to learn from the storm. The thing about it is there are certain things that I can only learn in storms and. The second thing that I want to point out to you and the text is that God's timing. Is designed. To teach you to trust. When Jesus, who made the disciples get into the boat? The Bible says that when he decided to reveal himself to them. was just before dawn. If the goal that God has is the comfort us. Then this is a this is a late appearance. But if God's goal is sometimes to change us then it makes sense that he

"Acts Chapter One. Is really cool and really confusing not for us, but. Certainly would have been for the disciples on one occasion while Jesus was eating with. X One verse four by the way I should have said that sorry acts chapter one verse four in IV, twenty eleven. On one occasion while he was eating with them. He I'm sorry I can't skip over that phrase, but I didn't plan on one occasion. Not a special occasion. Just, just any old Sunday morning. Any old Monday afternoon. You know on one occasion. He would give them the instructions that would really explained to them his kingdom in a way they'd never seen. Any David the greatest promise of the greatest gift that they would ever. That they would ever know. Okay on one occasion. We'll have to go a little faster than this if we're going to get through it on one occasion while he was eating with them. This is Jesus eating with his disciples. He gave them this command. Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift. Wait for the gift. My father promised what you've heard me. Speak About for John Baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days you will receive the greatest gift, and it's not gonna come in the form of a car. Or House or bonus or something like that? It's going to be the Holy Spirit the greatest come from within. Waiting on an amen. Waiting on the name, and like they were waiting on the Holy Spirit. But then this this, this is the part I want us to jump from today and we have. We have a lot of ground to cover, but from here then they gathered around him and asked him. Here's what they wanted to know. He's speaking about the gift that he wants to give them the holy. Spirit he's already died on the cross risen from the dead. He's about to send to have, but he said I'M GONNA. Give you a gift and you have to wait, and then they gathered around. The Nasscom Lord argue at this time at this time. Going to restore the kingdom to Israel. At this time. Somebody, say at this time. At this time he said to them it is not for you to know the Times or dates. The father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power. Here's the guarantee you will receive power. When the Holy Spirit comes you, and you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the. Word of the Lord Be. Somebody lift your hands in the chat to say I'm ready to receive them I'm ready to receive both hands both hands. I'm ready to. receive it. Oh, by the way I almost forgot. Shout out to my fifteen year old son Elijah be fertig. The Be stands for beats. He's A. He's a beat maker. A producer do the DASH is youtube and I'm sure he would appreciate a subscribe happy Fifteenth Birthday to my oldest son, the one who changed my name to Daddy. And then change to get the Dad. I'll never forget the day. He dropped the D. y. off the it was a it was a horrifying moment. And just even saying my fifteen year old son. Do you know how? How are cake? That makes my bones field. My knees started hurting I just felt like automatically old when I said I was feeling sprightly, and then all of a sudden, I started feeling saggy. Let's say I have a fifteen year old son, but his birthday was yesterday, and I love him so much, and he's watching right now. He better be if he wants to use his own this week and I'm to quiz on the sermon. He's my number one conversationalist. He's my workout partner. Now he's strong. The be stands for beasts to down there when we're working out together, and we have a good time and I love talking to them about my sermons. He is a great blessing. Blessed. Chris. You didn't say Amen, and you have a couple so I'm worried what's going on at the house. Do you need? Children are a blessing amen. Amen, and when you getting ready to have kids, they give you all kinds of advice. We were talking about the birth of the Church I was talking about the birth of my first born son, but. When when you're having your first one right since you don't know what to expect at all, the experts come out of the woodworks telling you how they raise their kids. They don't tell you that that one. They're telling you how they raised and giving you advice based off of Winter Rehab three times, but they just start telling you all this advice, and they'll tell you. Oh, and they'll tell you perfectly. They will prescribe for you perfectly. Kids our blenders. And like you can put them together and plug them in and. They were telling us with Elijah the whole time. The put him on a schedule. Put Him on a schedule. You WanNa do. You WanNa. Do what we did with our kids. When we were your age, and now our kids are grown, but. What was really helpful for us? Just really helped us establish. Just. And it's very good for the child is good for us. Just put them on a schedule. I and schedule. Elijah was. UNSCHEDULED LEVEL Is that a word on schedule. If. It's not a word it's it needs to be come on. How many agree after the year we've been having I. Don't know how you do this, but if anybody knows webster, and we can get a word added to the dictionary I looked it up before I came out I. Don't know how we're going to spell it but I want to suggest that we get after the year. We've been having I want to add after after being a parent of three kids I want to suggest we get this word in the dictionary as soon as possible unscheduled. Everybody's say it unscheduled able. I I. was unscheduled able. I mean you can set the schedule, but he don't care if he doesn't give a crap about. Your stay does not care for sleeping for eating and my kids still, don't they? Do not check my schedule. Looking at me like your kids do. You. Like. Schedule my children my. You know what else my sermon preparation process is on schedule I. Don't know how to spell it, but that's what it is. I was thinking of a way to explain it to. It's. You know I set aside time to study right, and then I'll just sit there and look at the Bible of five bibles, and spread them out, and none of them make any sense, and then while trying to go do something else, and I got something else going on within the sermon will just come. You know walking through the door like hey, here. I am I. Don't care the a date night. How many movie theaters have we been trying to have a date on a Thursday night? And I'm like I'm sorry big. You have to tell me what happens to Tonya. Harding on the ice skating movie. I gotTA write this down. Real quick because the sermon does a check my

"Fertig on the pastor of Elevation Church and this is our podcast. I wanted to thank you for joining us today. This inspires you open builds your fate. Hope it gives you perspective to see God is moving in your life. Enjoy the message. I'm going to share one verse and then I'm GonNa let you be seated needed and the verse is actually an ecclesiastic these eleven. I have unintentionally been working my way backwards through this passage of scripture and I haven't Kevin started a series lately but unintentionally just been using these thoughts from Solomon who has us enrolled in the school of Wisdom and he has the right to do do it because some people call them. The wisest man who ever lived he was like he line musk of the old testament but the only difference between Lean Salomon and Elon Musk is he wrote his his treatise to help us see that if you succeed but you're not fulfilled or if you succeed okay but you don't have peace or if you succeed but you're succeeding things that don't have real meaning you will come up empty in the end and so we helps us with that that with a few principles from the word of God and this one today I wanNA share is very very simple from the School of Solomon Ecclesiastes chapter eleven verse four says says. This whoever watches the wind will not plant whoever looks at the clouds will not reap so so I told John It's going to preach today. Really this is more like an announcement of a of a fight okay so really became to watch. It's a fight today and the title of this message is called wind versus word in in this corner is the wind and his opponent is the word and I believe this message is for someone today who is conflicted between the wind and the word of God and I believe today is going to speak to your heart do it. Lord in Jesus name a man touch. Somebody say Dindane. You may be seated. One thing that is interesting to me and the verse really suggests the same reality is how win your spirit makes a decision to do something. Your mind will find reasons not to do it now now. If you decide to do something like go on a diet your mind will immediately. you start calculating why it's not a good idea to go on a diet now. Some of Y'all are already doing the math. Well you know. Christmas is right around the corner. It's like month's till Christmas but you already got the countdown timer because it's easy to find a reason and really the way that our human minds work sometimes is in opposition to our spirit which is divine and that's why you could find yourself even with the Apostle Paul who lamented one time what I want to do. Don't do what I WANNA. Do I do because often your mind will contradict your spirit and it's actually deeper than that because the way this works in daily life is that your heart reaches a verdict and then gives evidence to support the verdict whether or not the verdict was true in a court of law. This would be a mistrial but in our lives this is often just standard operating reading procedure is that we come to a conclusion and then once we've come to that conclusion our mind is brilliant like some kind of the four hundred dollars an hour attorney to find evidence to support the conclusion and in so many areas of our lives we find a reason. I mean you can find a reason and this is what Solomon is saying. If you look for a reason not to so or if you look for a reason not to reap you we'll find one. Every time is very true because right now I promise you you can find a reason your mind can find a reason to complain so even though Your Spirit knows that God has been good to me how many of you and your spirit you know that God has been good to you and better than you deserve and yet you could find a reason couldn't you. I'll give you one you want one. If you just need a reason to complain. I'll give you a reason right now to complain for some Gaullists too cold in the auditorium. If you just need a reason to complain if the if the if the praise songs of the Most High God didn't didn't didn't give you enough reason to praise. Let's find something for you to complain about some of Y'all. This sermon is going to be too long for you. Some of you is going to be too short for you. Some you don't like the preacher and bridges and you know you could find one if you need one and it's really not that hard to find a reason to complain impact. If we want to go oh even deeper than that and I don't mean to take a dark turn early in the sermon because it's really good atmosphere in here and I don't want to mess it up. If you wanted to you could find a reason to go into a whole depression. If you wanted to think about certain problem in your life right now you could you could distract yourself with a problem that is not in this room to the point that you don't hear another in other words. I say this whole sermon because your your mind will collect evidence for a verdict that you've already decided on and that's why when you wake up some mornings like I say is just going to be one of those days. You will find every reason why it's one of those days because your heart reached a verdict and now you've sent your mind in investigative search of the support. You'll know on preaching in my introduction. I'm rested for this message and see even if you WANNA to try to be tired tired. If you WANNA reason to be tired you can have a reason to be tired right now. I mean if you WANNA find. If you just need a reason you can find the reason when you need a reason and that's why it's a bad idea. Watch a sharp turn to sit around watching the weather. My least favorite thing about being a pastor is when inclement weather and by inclement weather. Here's what I mean for church people. I'm about to have some group therapy. Inclement weather means it could mean I mean that is so beautiful outside that we can't possibly go to church. We need to take this time to be outside. I'm not talking to you on talking into the people who skip church. Let me look at the camera because say filler here right now. Inclement weather is not too cold. We don't have to go out in the rain is not too perfect perfect. We're not missing anything outside. It is perfect church weather. We actually have a little job on our staff winner. Just just a little too cold for you to be outside but but it's not too cold where you have to suffer for five seconds before your seat warmers kick in is perfect church weather and it's really hard to be a pastor especially when they are forecasting torrential weather that may or may not even hit our state and what's really difficult difficult about it and I promise you this is in the text is that sometimes all the milk all the bread will be off of the grocery store shelves and there will be no snow on the ground but it was it was a threat or I could say like this. It was the forecast that created fear of something that was never even in our future now you went to Sam's and Costco bought out all the batteries and the sun was out and it was seventy seven degrees now one thing that I love about our churches when a real tragedy happens. We've already got supplies on the ground in the Bahamas. Because of your giving we've already got supplies flies moving toward people when there's an emergency ness not the the part that I struggle with as a pastor. The hard part is knowing that so many people see my my dad used to wake up every morning and watch the news and he would always. I thought this was so we are growing up. He would always cuss out the weatherman. I need to give you full disclosure closer because this is very complicated part of my personal psychology. I did not want to be a preacher. When I was a little boy. I wanted to be a weatherman. I think it was a form of rebellion because I would stand with my sesame street globe in an antenna that I broke off my TV so at the point at the globe and I would forecast the weather. This is like six years old seven years old and I would forecast the weather in places in the world that I couldn't pronounce I liked it like the ability to predict the future but then my dad he would cuss out the weather man and I was conflicted and what made him so mad about the weather man was that he understood stood that even though I respect meteorologist remember I could have been one if it just got a little bit different just a little different path. I could have been one but the thing that my dad couldn't stand about it was to watch how people would go into a frenzy over something that was in a forecast and now my dad is no longer living but I just wanna I say to him if he's watching this on a heavenly celestial livestream broadcast channel that I did it now because it's frustrating when you're trying to plan in church and people don't come not because it snowing not because it's raining but because it might you know how many things that the devil has kept you from doing in your life that God called you to do because because of what might happen if you did and a lot of bus the enemy doesn't even have to fight us with real events dance or circumstances just even the suggestion of disaster is enough to send some of us into retreat and so just even the thought what if they don't like you is enough to keep you in the house or just even thought if what if they break my heart is enough to keep you from extending yourself in relationship or just even a thought you know many of you are reluctant to get involved in this church because you had previous bad church experience and I understand that because once you have been through a storm I lived through Hurricane Hugo. I was eight years old when Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston South Carolina. It terrified me. I didn't want to spend the night away from home home for two years after that as a little boy because one thing after you have survived a storm after you've survived bad weather after you have survived abuse what people don't tell you about is that even after the storm is over. It's still rages on on the inside of you and the saddest thing in the the world is to see a Christian who has been set free by the love of Christ to know that neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation Gatien.

"You like that old story, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free with your head bowed your eyes closed at every location, the one moving in disturbing this moment. What is the story that got needs to set you free from today? The key is your belief. That it is also written. That the blood of Jesus spoken a better word. There's a new coven new baptism. A new reality. Thank you for each person. Who you brought here today? Whether they're physically in a church building or watching on their foam. Tears are streaming down their faiths face because they're facing a situation right now. That's great for them or whether they're in a place in their life or they've actually accepted the lie. No longer even feels like a lie anymore. Pray that you would disturb those places of disbelief and dysfunction in our lives. So that we can know the truth and be set free. Which the unpredictability of freedom over the comfort in the certainty of slavery today. We want to be set free. Thank you for telling us the truth. Thank you for speaking over our lives at true identity. I asked now Lord that in this moment. Speak your word in that personal way. Whether it's an area of bitterness or resentment. Or maybe it's something much more subtle than that. We've been telling ourselves to keep ourselves in a cycle of failure. Believe that you have called us over commerce, and we will only overcome as we embrace that truth. Thank you for joining us special. "This stephen i'm the pastor of elevations church thank you for joining us on the elevations podcast every single week there's a brand new message from elevating church but today here's a bonus teaching exclusively for our podcast listeners with dick it out just for you hope you enjoy this bonus message have you been watching the news lately i know you guys are all news junkies up here it's what you do every morning look to see what's going on in the middle east the most urgent and pressing in their life i didn't watch the news when i was on watch it much now what i've been doing lately is kind of cool i watched the news on mute so i turned it on while i'm doing something else usually just if i'm exercising with the news on and wade works out with me and we'll put the news on mute and then we listened to great music music you know nothing about news iq music that is to fine for your your taste you will never understand the beauty of pearl jam you will never understand the beauty of nirvana but i do but i do i do you will never understand the mythical elegance of actual rose but you don't need to a different day for you so we all have heroes well i'll listen to music and i'll watch the news and it makes the news it makes the news more entertaining it's just watch if you just watch it because when you just watch it you don't hear all of the story you just see the headlines and then you can kind of guess and what the story is based on the headlines but the problem with that is the headlines can be a little misleading.

"This is stephen fertig on the pastor of elevations church thank you for joining us on the elevations podcast every single week there's a brand new message from elevate church but today here's a bonus teaching exclusively for our podcast listeners with picked it out just for you hope you enjoyed this bonus message but i wanna read the scripture lou thirteen for six through nine jesus told this parable man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard and he came seeking fruit on it and found none and he said to the vinedresser look for three years i've come seeking fruit on this victory and i find nine cut it down why should it us up the ground and he answered him sir let alone this year also one more year touch somebody say one more year one more year to work with this thing and i'm a big around it and i'm gonna put on manure and then if it should bear fruit next year well and good but if not you can cut it down let's walk through the vineyard with jesus because he has some object lessons to teach us apparently as jesus is survey ing the nation of israel after ministering among them for three years he did not find what he was looking for and in order to illustrate since this appointment with what the religious system had created in his day he turns to yet another agricultural example it's one of god's favorite ways to teach by using the process of nature to help us to understand the nature of his grace and the nature of his heart and the nature of our struggle and so he does it in a vineyard and as we walked through this vineyard is just like four or five versus that i read but there's a lot in it because i would suggest to you that you will in different seasons of your life different stages of your development identify with all of the different elements in this parable maybe in one day you could identify with all of the elements what i mean to say is there's an owner of vineyard who was disappointed there's a manager of vineyard.

"Welcome to the elevation church podcast today's message is called get back in the gate where pastor steven reminds us to not disengage from our destiny we hope you enjoy this message when i was praying about how to start the year in the theme we should start the year with i was let the second samuel nineteen a scripture that originally i was attracted to from a leadership perspective but i think it has implications for our church as i said this image before you and by your attention to second samuel chapter eighteen let's go eighteen verse 33 and get the context and rebound to chapter nineteen verse eight and so i know we were done with david because we preached a whole series about him last year called bars and battles but i asked him what he come over to two thousand eighteen and help us start the year and so he said that he would but there's going to be a real dramatic difference between the david we saw on first samuel nineteen and the david we see in second samuel nineteen because when we saw him in first annual nineteen a he was on the come up and god was really blessing him and he had a lot of courage but now we're going to see him at a place that is very unfamiliar to someone of his caliber and david's confidence is shaken and so this would be a very strange thing if you just picked up the bible and you heard about david frum sunday school and he was killing goliath and ripping off the heads of phyllis hinson and drive in back the the enemies of israel but now the scripture says in second samuel 1830 33 the king was shook i put it in a little bit of a modernized translation.

"Welcome to the elevation church podcast today's message is called the contentment commandments we're pastor stephen talks about the secret to being content every situation we hope you enjoyed this message my subject today is contentment you've heard of the ten commandments you heard of them you broken them you've heard of the 10 commandments this is not the 10 commandments my my sermon today is called the content meant commandments i want to speak on the subject of contentment and what it takes to live in a place of contentment and i was so mad at abbie's softball tball whatever you call it the one where they don't keep score stakes all the fun out of it for me was so mad at her game yesterday there was this eighteenmonthold and that baby just had me furious because he was so good and so happy and it caused me to contrast how my children behaved at age eighteen months and i looked at my old this son and then my middle child and i said these see that baby that is the opposite i ask them on my said is he always like this and she said yeah you she said he's just always content and i told alleging grow i said you were the opposite of always content whatever the opposite was if you would have been like that holly and i would have had twelve disciples we would have just kept populating the are one of you is equal to 12 of those and the reason i wanted to choose filipions four is because there's one verse i want you to listen for it it described paul toward the end of his journey in serving price and he describes a state of contentment.

"Thank you for tuning in to the elevation church podcast we hope you're able to listen to this weekend's worship experience today we wanted to share special teaching from passer stephen thank you for joining us and we hope you enjoy this message and i can speak to somebody today who who has some triumph in your life but you also got some trouble you you've got some join your life but you also got some sadness along life's way along this journey that we're on god does not promise that it will all be good now he did say and romans eight twenty eight that he works all things together for the good of those who love them inner called according to his purpose but based on the construct of that sentence i take it to mean that if he has to work all things together for the good that assumes that everything is not good before he gets a hold of it that means there must be some stuff this put some stuff is not and what he does as he takes what's living and what's dined and he makes it all work together for the good to bring forth his purpose in your life same into that if you've lived a little while if you've ever lost anything if you've ever been hurting but had to smile if you've ever had something to celebrate about and if you wait until it's all good in your life to give god praise and to be happy and the celebrate victories and to have peace in your heart and to enjoy what god has given you never will causes never all good always in our lives there's something beyond born there's something dine i have to accept this the pastor of a church there are always going to be new people coming in and some people leave and god bless them both because god knows the ecosystem of his intention for my life and he knows how to make certain things leave and certain things calm but he'll never leave me alone that's one thing i can count on that weather something's dyin or weather something's being born got his superintending my life and he sees every loss and he sees up regain any measures all my pain and he catches every tear and in.
