"You're listening to rocks across the pond. The curling podcasts. That goes around the globe looking for the stories. In the world's coolest sport we have curling news news for everyone whether you're playing in your thursday league or following your favorite teams on tour now here your host brian magee and our professor appeal. Jonathan haber cross. Hey everybody to rocks across the pond. It's a curling podcast. Come to you from richmond. Virginia my name is ryan mcgee an joining me in southampton england is jonathan. Haber and jonathan. I'm currently looking out my window at a snow globe. It's pretty cool If i get distracted during our recording here that is why so you have snow yet. It's not a pretty good to it. it was rain early this morning and it is like right before we sat down to record it turned to snow and it's it looks absolutely stunning outside. We get snow. We get a good snow here in richmond probably every other year and we got that on monday and now it's it's snowing against this is kind of surprising. We had the sun come out yesterday for the first time since christmas. Congratulations that was nice to see siphon that have been rain nonstop in january. Fortunately the snow is currently not sticking to the roads although it if it keeps coming down like this it might cause it's been in the fifties the last couple of days it's been gorgeous But yeah so now. We've got snow. It's kind of wild. Yeah well can you rank in your backyard. This is not this virginia man. I'm going to do probably the worst transition that i have ever done on this podcast or are you ready for it all right so jonathan is snow globe kind like a bubble in guess coming up later this month. The curling bubble. That's right so we are here today to talk about the scotties Which kicks off the calgary curling bubble and we're also going to talk about the japanese championships in the swiss championships which are underway and are going to run through the week. And so i picked out ten plotlines from the scotties. 'cause eighteen teams is too much to go through. You ever not gonna go team by team although it would be pretty quick this year because there's not really a whole bunch of results that we could talk about leading up into this events nice true to it's also there's not many results to go on and I also socket predictions saw all all that other people. Do the predictions had a gamble for a good reason. Anyway so you told me you told me you had a list of things to watch in the new sent me. The notes for this episode in their tin tin is not a few like ten is a lot but i'll think of it as ten ends. Okay all right. So we're going in ten ins for s scotties. All right i'll i can. I can follow. Yeah so i think ryan there's five manitoba teams so one way of thinking about this event is do you bet manitoba or bat the rest of canada. Honestly it's fifty fifty because the rest of canada includes hohmann. that's true. I think it's either gonna be homeowner enersen i i i would be. I would be surprised. Not stunned if one of the teams other than homer enersen wins this event. I so okay all right. That's a good subplot. So i think it could go either way. We got a little bit to go on in terms of the bubble effects. That was the seventh end. So let's talk about that. But i agree it could go. You think it's either sin or home in and i'll go. I'll go you one further jonathan. So they changed the format a bit so the playoffs is just gonna be one semi-final one final. Whoever is at the top of the standings at the end of the round robin gets the by straight to the final. Three teams. Make the playoffs. I will be very surprised if the three playoff teams are not home. Anderson jones you that you're that conflicts i think both the tweak to the format and the lack of curling is going throw a bit of a chaotic wrench into things. I think you'll get upsets. However because of the size of the field in the number of games they are going to play. it's gonna by teams are going to be able to pull upsets. But i don't think you're gonna see one of those three teams lose enough to miss the playoffs yet. Okay so that's the first okay. Second this is this is the more i think. This is the spicy story that i was looking forward to a year ago and we never got to see it but to me. We've talked about this before there's not enough kind of playing up the rivalries and curling but wego being cut by team hallman in the before times and then picked up by jennifer jones. I think an enormous curling season would be the biggest subplot for that season. Yes or no. Oh yeah definitely. Yeah and we haven't heard a peep about that so we're gonna see abraham probably their first game to head. Sorry we've heard peeps a little pete but it's all bubble covid outside of cova. That's probably the number one story. What do we think okay. So there's a bunch of angles to this right so first of all. There's the rivalry game that will pop up at some point. And how's that going to be hyped. Second who comes out of this better like does jones with picking up legal. End up being a stronger team. Hohmann who kind of made the cut was making a decision. They obviously thought better team by making this move. Are they a better team. And does the fact that neither teams had a competitive season for shake up in any way shape or form. It's not going to have as big an impact as you would think. I think that it'll lead to them dropping a game along the way like i think someone at the team that you would think okay. This team has no shot against jones or this is no shot against home in like. They're going to drop one of those games along the way but i think there's still playoff teams. Yeah okay yeah. I think the both so playoff teams. I just wonder who comes out of this with a bit of an edge. I think jones may have disinter how it all shakes out. I don't honestly just because of the lack of information to go on. We're really not going to know until they play each other. Yeah no it's good. I think it's definitely an interesting angle right then. Okay so third end and this is another manitoba team so i think this is the big surprise. Is that flurry carry. That's the big announcement. Right is a tracy. Flurry can't play. In the scottish. And saw they brought in chelsea carey as the super sub skip and actually i think is interesting carries got a pretty good track record with new teams. It's just that our teams tend to break up but she actually won two scotties and done it kind of early in that team cycle both times. She also is kind of a big event player. She did well. The the olympic trials and along with her kind of recent scottish performances. So are they a dark horse to win that. I think that the bubble actually plays well for them right in a sense No teams kind of in midseason form. All the teams are going to be going through team dynamic issues right so some of the things have negative of pulling this maneuver in. This case aren't such a negative because all the other teams are in similar situations. Does this make them dark horse team to win. I think so. And i the reason that you pointed out is exactly why because you look at this field and you say okay of these teams. How many of them are having to art. How many of them have a new player from last season that they didn't get the opportunity to go out on tour with in really build the team dynamic and among the among the favorites. It's all of them but anderson so yeah absolutely darkhorse for sure. So that is the fourth end here so adelson. They're the defending champs right. They were deprived of the chance to represent candidate. The world's because the world was cancelled. So if you know the need much motivation to win a scottish but maybe that adds a little. Bit extra spice. If you're the defending champs right that often is a bit of a down effect. They're also the most stable team in terms of lineup amongst the contenders right. No lineup changes. They know they can win it because they just have and in a certain sense. They've probably broken through the the mental block. If you were the pressure of having to win a championship so can they repeat and are a the favorites to win at all. Yes and i'll throw another wrinkle into this jonathan. 'cause you have so many reasons to want to win the scotties from the the pride of being the national champion to the spot in the world's to the money but one of the things that isn't in that for a few of these teams the fact that curling candidate came out and announced some trials spots before because before going in this was going to be kind of your last chance to get an automatic bid into the trials will curling candidate came out and said okay. These teams are already set in the trials in. We'll have to pretrial events leading up so all of a sudden. That pressure is off a handful of these teams now. So now there's no longer that that additional motivating factor of. Hey if we win. This tournament were already in the trials. See think for some of them. There's less motivation to win but Bit more because they want to go to world's they haven't gone to. Yes let bean slightly less lately. I mean i'm not saying there teams that no longer. Want to win the scotties because it no longer is tied to getting to the trials that is not what i'm saying i'm saying that there is one less motivating factor in honestly. Maybe it takes a little bit of pressure off of everybody to for sure. Okay so then. The last are the fifth and the last of our manitoba teams So mackenzie zachariah Junior champ and beth peterson kind of top competitive team from manitoba both qualified based on c. Trs points There's a couple of recalls so this one too because a few if you go to the sierra standings from last year there's a few kind of really good teams that aren't here so the biggest the biggest kind of names that didn't make the cut our kelsey rock and robin silver nagel Right and so part of this is how the because of lineup changes right correct and So that let these other teams. That were at eleventh and twelfth. When lockdown happened snag the the last two spots to get it. So is that going to be controversy. I guess it already is controversy. The reason there's controversy is because curling canada waited so long before releasing the parameters around who would get a wildcard spot. I think if they had said from the very beginning okay. We're just gonna go straight off of c. t. r. s. points. However you have to have at least three members from last year's team like they had said that from the outset. I don't think anyone would have had a problem. But they waited until the very last minute to announce how they were going to award these wild card spots. So i think that's why there's a little bit of controversy rocks team is really good. Obviously they've had a lot of success on tour however they've never gotten out of alberda whereas silver eagles team. They have been to the scotties and they'd have had success at the scotties. So that's that's the team that i really a of all the teams. That's the one team that i really wish was in this field because i think that they would be among the favorites if they were in but they're not The rock team would have been interesting to see how they would have done given the chance to be in the scotties but one of my things that i had down as things to watch was was this team. Beth peterson out of manitoba. Because they've had success on tour the last couple years they've been a pretty solid team however there were there was no chance that they were ever going to get out of manitoba scotties because of just the the depth of that province so i'm excited to see them. Have the chance the zachariah team. I mean sky's the limit for them. They're really young. So i don't know i mean this is not gonna be their last opportunity to play in the scotties but it'll be good experience for them. But i i am. One of my things to watch is Is team peterson. Getting the getting the to be there. Because i i mean unless they move. I don't know if they're gonna get another shot at it. I don't know. I mean while we don't know what's going to happen in terms of that i. I like having a young team just out of juniors show up the obviously not going to be a favorite to win but they also aren't gonna finish last and it'll be fun to see how they match up with the big name teams and see seal that experience some translates into future performance. And i agree with you for them. They're they're kind of one to watch like five five seven years from now probably definitely be slamming and doing all that then if not a little bit sooner but it'll be nice to see kind of some young up and coming teams kind of added to the mix here. Yeah and that's what they do in the us is they. Save one spot at nationals. For a junior team. Which i think is actually really smart. Yeah there's i mean. I think that's that's the kind of thing. Maybe though to look at for future tweaks to the brian scotties field. All right number six new look home team. So they announced the lineup. Change right as lockdown was happening. They haven't had time to gel. So how are they going to do. They're gonna make the final. It'll be against a anderson and one of those teams will will win not. I haven't decided which of those teams i think will be the one that wins. So you're going straight up. Chalk chalk off. Chuck chuck chuck chuck although no not necessarily because i think jones is actually a little bit above home nc. Actually yes he. Air holman's fourth in seats here. S so not necessarily chock off cr s but shock based off of. This was the final last year. But how much i mean. How much of that's just the lineup. Change in terms of like the changing of points. I have no idea we would have to have jerry groups back on axs. I assume that. Senator wilkes had fewer points and then So you're swapping out weigo's points for wilkes as points that probably palsy you down. I think that's probably what pulled them back a bit but and they also haven't because it didn't they already have already had their thing lockdown right. There had their trials birth lockdowns. They're more selective in terms of the events they play. Yeah because they had one. I think they'd won the candidate cup. So it's like that's the that's the the effect right. Is that the sierras points. If you've already got your birth locked up you can then just pick and choose. What you're doing plus the lockdown a lineup change. So i don't know. If they're i'd i'd i wouldn't go straight shock on. C. t. r. s. For that reason. Okay so you think they're gonna. I think i think it opens the door a little bit. There's a pretty clear pattern. Humans career of like she'll show up somewhere with a new team or a new level of event and not do that. Well the first time like not do that by her standards the first time and it's almost like she. Then she uses that event to figure it out and then comes back the next time to destroy so it was like better first season with joanne. Courtney to kind of runaway season and breakout was afterwards. I'm kind of wondering if if something similar here happens at this is kind of feel it out. You season Because of any teams kinda like a race car in terms of a fine tuned race car. And everything's to be precise and perfect with them The team home in but once they get all those things kind of clicking. It's just like they're so far ahead of the field becomes becomes destructive. So i i'd actually we bet on a little slight underperformance for them their standards opening up the door for perhaps some of the other teams in the next year. I i would not. I again am betting about predicting but i i'm not as convinced it's going to go chok seconds. The point number seven or number seven writes. The big question is how will no season and a curling babo affect the tournament right. And so i there's a bunch of issues here one is The fact you're gonna have to go travel quarantine Being relatively isolated place with a strip down support system. So it's going to be one of the fact that it's basically going to be go to the rank go back to your hotel I'm not sure how much they're gonna have to practice. Or they're going to be able to practice in the bubble upon arrival. That's a foreign team for their days. So that might affect their the competition preparation to and then kind of larger thing is. There's been no no curling this year to speak of right so teams. If you go look at early-season curling results teams are all over the map you got. You got a lot of wacky results. In september october bonds pills and i think that's really the case of teams figuring stuff out and despite you can throw like a hundred rocks a day for two months but you still need a little bit of time to kind of on ice competition to get yourself into kind of peak level form and so without that. The question is who does this favor. Does it favor the pros or does it give what we call the joe's or guest the josephine's a shot. I think you'll see some upsets early. And if this were a triple knock. Then i would start looking at the team. Birds of the world. The team brown's of the world as possibilities for the tournament. But because there's because it's such a long turnament. I think eventually the cream will will rise and i don't. I don't think you'll see someone come out of nowhere and make the playoffs. I think you'll see you'll see a relatively big name. Maybe maybe missed the championship pool. Yeah so i think maybe maybe someone a rough start misses the championship pool. But i don't over. The course of time i see it kind of going toward the the big name teams and honestly it's just because they're better curlers in and that's the that's the main reason for it has nothing to do with anything else other than their. They're better but you'll see you'll see some weird things at the beginning because i watched the the beginning of the swiss championships yesterday. Yana schwaller just struggled with the ice in game. One in so he wound up dropping a game to this team. Klausner that i had never heard of before so early on. You're gonna see stuff like that. Especially as teams adapt the ice and it just didn't use Get used being back on the ice. Because i'm sure. I think in a few of these provinces teams just haven't even been able to practice. I mean i know for me. Start of the season. It's getting my touch. Draw back right. I got all can go out. You know after a warm up in the muscles getting kind of get a bit more relaxed throwing takeouts not that hard because the the mechanics of delivery or there but the that it's the touch right. It's the Getting a hack and have that confidence that that when you throw for button wait disowns gonna go there and that's really really comes with like having thrown that recently in grooved that got the reps in so i think that's that's where we're going to see a bit of the struggles early on the question is who which teams can kind of find their draw weight there touch way quickly I think the other thing is the way the tournament set up. It has a little bit more possibility for chaos that By going to the one one of the first place team going right to the championship and two and three going to the semi final. I think this actually makes the possibility of logjam at third place quite likely right that you could end up with several teams at like seven or four nine eighty three for that third place spot and i think they've only scheduled in one round tiebreakers with their space. Sean graham from from game of gave me shutter to there's actually space when look the schedule for a second Put tiebreaker on saturday night. So possibly rounds tiebreakers but that also has a possibility of being a bit of chaos. Engine right that You know you basically get four teams tied in to replace the end of a long week. people aren't quite in kind of full curling season shape and you know single-game upsets can happen right. So maybe maybe a team. You have a four way tie for third as a team. Six in sixth place overall standings all they have to do is win two games in that two three games. Maybe knock off one of the kind of favorites. I think there's a. There's a bit of possibility for chaos there too. Yeah and i think the difference is the difference between you and i is. I think it'll be. I think that that will just happen early. And i think towards the end it'll get more chaki. Yeah but the those losses early count right. Let's say let's say totally possible. Jones comes out first game and she's flat. She's planning for his game. But let's says you drops one or two she quote unquote shouldn't early in the week and it's fine. She kind of still make the championship pool. But it's like if you've already down to loss and you still got play. Top team your crossover game. And that's also lost your eight and three quickly and then you're in kind of that. Random random tiebreaker game. That's true. But i just i don't see any of those teams below below the anderson jones home in and i'll even throw carey in their between the under that group. I don't see any of those teams capable of playing consistently enough that they at the end of the day. They only have three losses or three. Get we're losses. I think that's the difference is the is the consistency. Yeah as we saw. Even at last year's scotties jones can have an off night but adds i don't think the rest of the field belong be be behind. Those four has the consistency to avoid also having four or five losses at the end of it. Yeah okay so let's that brings us the number eight so what i'm gonna call the tier two teams right. So i'm classifying. These teams as veteran teams. So they're they're mostly no names. They've got lots of skies experience into our experience. If you follow the weekly tour all of these teams will be known to you But they're not champs they haven't won scotties They may occasionally qualify for a slam. But they're not allowed to call regular slammers. The teams you kind of pinson every week for the playoffs so given all that. Here's here's on classifying tier two so walker from alberta brown from bbc carry balu kalusha from the territory. Suzanne birt from p. e. i. Joe brothers nova scotia sherry anderson from saskatchewan and melissa atoms from new brunswick who out of this group. The think is going to challenge for the championship pool. So let's assume that you're you're four that we've kind of taken as top tier you think of the championship tear the and then plus the two other manitoba teams qualified on c. Trs points and then so this gives us a list of another seven so out of those nine which forbid think are likely to challenge for the championship pool. Llano the grams would go with suzanne. Birt i will go with corrine. Brown that is that is my that is my pick to click as it were all right. My if you're gonna get picked to click. it's carry. Lucia from the territories picked up joanne. Rizzo who's top competitive skipping ontario as an alternate slash third so using using the import rule saw seeing that. That's kind of interesting little wrinkle. Their i think that that team a fair bit main in carries kind of always dangerous at the scotties kind of that coup coup shot making ability so then listening listening to the two girls. Podcast i guess carry was actually injured. I think at last year scotties. And i think that that was something that really affected them that that made them play to what we expect out of team galicia and then the other one that i think i see on. This list is sherry anderson. Who has sean. Grandma say all-share anderson does a show up and make playoffs. If we say the championship will hear his playoffs sherry anderson. Probably likely to qualify. I'd say that. I think that zachariah like team out of manitoba. They've got a decent shot to make a championship will. That's probably a good goal for them. But yeah and then there's a few kind of other. Suzanne birt definitely the the atlantic canada teams kind of. I think they've got shot. But there have bit more on the bubble there right. A throw jill brothers in there as well and the other thing is like those teams. Those teams had to play down so they've played recently and i don't think the the thing that hurts my my pick of team brown as they did not have to play down because the e c the bbc scotties got cancelled So yeah the so. That is an usually we talk about. They you know going in. They always talk about you. Know the teams from atlantic. Canada at a disadvantage. Because you know they don't have the the they don't play as much. They haven't played with these championship rocks. Well now. they're the ones that have actually played recently. Yeah this is a bit of advantage there right because they because they treated this pandemic like adults so they were able to have things all right in college football. They talk about the upset special or upset alert right like a dangerous dangerous team that could knock off one of the top twenty five right so you mean like You mean like once a year. When i go to a virginia tech football game and they lose to someone that No one has ever heard of yes. So this year's scotties upset alert team. I'd say his team nunavut. Who's got fellow podcast. Laurie eddie skipping they were they were dangerous last year right they certainly kind of had to again chaos agent like certainly have the chance on any given game two to mix it up. So who do you think they will be at this year scottish. Who do you think they're going to upset. Okay jonathan i. I'm gonna call this. This is that was my call. Draw to laurie. Eddie gets a second shot at chelsea carey. After almost pulling the upset last year this time she plays chelsea carry first game out of the gate with chelsea carey playing with some people that she hasn't played with before. So that is my. That is my call. Shot is drawn number two eight thirty. Am on saturday. Nunavut gets there if extract their revenge on chelsea carey. All right i like it. We should open up a sportsbook tied to the podcast. Hey sports. Betting is legal in virginia now rocks across the pond. Sportsbook is open for all your curling bets. I have not seen curling lines on there yet. All right okay. So last end. I don't know enough about quebec which is team. Laura saint george so yukon is laurie. Abby and northern ontario is skip bhai. krista birds. So i don't know much about any of these teams. I know manda from team burns. But that's about it. So do you have any insights here. Cure cure brenton's a very solid curler that added as their alternate The saint george team i know. I think that they've been to this event before they at least have some experience. But no i do not know anything about yukon team. Yes so these are all teams. That are they. Don't play much on tv. And so we just don't know as much about them. I so i'm just going to say this actually looking forward to watching the scott he's seen any curling it all in the last year really And actually part of the fun is seeing completely new team. So even seeing teams teams like the yukon northern ontario and quebec like new faces And kind of see how they play is going to be exciting so any any other scottish thoughts from you ride my other thing to watch is will will any teams have to pull out of the tournaments midway through due to covid. That's another wrinkle. Like do we have a situation like we saw at the danish tranships which you can listen to that show that we did a few weeks ago where we talked to the presidents of the danish curling federation as well as one of their players where they had their worlds qualifier interrupted on day two because they had a they they brought they brought colors into the bubble with negative tests in then on day two one of them tested positive and they had to shut the thing down. Will that happen here That is that is my other thing to watch is how will how will the pandemic effect discernment how will effect it. And we've covered this a little bit. It's obvious that if covid kind of breaks out in curling venue it spreads really fast right so if there's outbreak This is a little bit different from the other sports. We've seen going on in bubbles like basketball and hockey is because all the teams are on the ice simultaneously or a lot of them are And it quickly. The covid spreads pretty pretty well and pretty quickly in in arenas That it's not just the case of as we've seen in basketball where teams have to forfeit while they wait for you know handful of players that kinda recover or isolated kind of get negative test back here. You could see the entire field for a draw. Get it simultaneously right. And it's not clear what happens in that circumstance you want to move on to the swiss championships. Sure so you at you. As the king of the international curling spreadsheet should break this down for us sure so the the swiss championships just got underway. They'll they'll conclude this upcoming weekend seven men's teams for women's teams. The men are going to play a round robin in the top. Four after that round robin will play each other again and then they'll have a final series. The the four women's teams are going to play a triple round robin and then have a final series kind of what i'm watching here will the defending champs last year. We saw upsets on both sides. We saw yanni schwalier win on the inside and we saw elena stern win on the women's side can they repeat or will the perennial favorites team to cruise on the men's side who played in the twenty eighteen olympics in one bronze will team tyranny. Who were the twenty. Nineteen world champs. Return return to worlds and and win this year's swiss championships the other thing. I'm watching his. We have a lot of young teams on the men's side other than schwaller into crews and on the women's side you have. The team skipped by rafaela. Kaiser that includes selena was shonka they. They've played they played in the last four World juniors team is also part of the swiss military sports program. So they they are. They are soldiers and they are also curlers so Interested to see how that team does against Against the other three teams. Which is like team as i said team starting team zero zoning but also Irene schori is taken half of her team from last year as well as a half of a filters team. That's in that that's who is Has come together on this year's version of team schori so there's kind of things to watch their in switzerland all right in arts. I think i'm going chaos. I'm going all not cheese. Chaos that. I think that again. The sets up for unpredictable results because people haven't had a full season to train properly and to compete properly so i don't you're kind of going with a with the chalk. Okay it'll be some it'll be baby schwartz or maybe one of the young teams you haven't heard of. We already saw saw yanni schwaller lose to yawn klausner in his very first game. So we'll see if that trend continues or if team schwalier The ship for the rest of that tournament Off to japan which is the other the other tournament that the the other national. That's going to be played this year. That has a direct route to the world. So whoever wins the swiss tournament They're going to world's whoever wins the japanese championships. They're going to world's this year other than korea who already had their championships awhile ago. Basically every other countries just picking their their their rap whereas switzerland canada and japan this year half to win their way in japan Interesting wrinkle here in this is the the number one thing to watch your your defending champs. Which is you met. Samora on the men's side and set sqi fujisawa on the women's side if they repeat if either of them repeats that is your olympic rep should japan qualified for the olympic so fujisawa winds. She's you're you're japanese. Olympic rep if moore wins. He's your min's japanese olympic rep if any other team wins. There will be a playoff series between the previous year's champion. This year's champion depending on world curling tour points There could be third team in that playoff series. But so that's that's one of the additional things to watch here during this championship which which just got underway. And what's really cool about this. Is you have multiple feeds for each draw seven. Pm eastern time. You can actually watch all three games. Which is really cool The other draws you can only watch too because they black out the sheet that is being shown on. Nhk tv You get to see basically all the japanese championship. It's really cool. And i'm looking forward to it Again kinda wanna see the youth movement here one. There's a team playing in their first japanese championships. this is the team skipped by Suka kenai The team includes amy and nami and Monet ryo cow They were the twenty nineteen world. Junior rep for japan's young up and coming team. They're kind of the mackenzie zachariah of japan. But they have added a second name. Junko nishimuro who played with tori qantas team when they played in the twenty eighteen world so they've added some veteran experience to that team in addition to the world junior reps of course the big four teams are all their Fujisawa the the team skipped by saying nakajima which includes acoustic kit ezawa throwing fourth stones and the yoshimura team which is team. Hokkaido bank In addition dettori his team so of those are the four teams that we've kind of talked about a lot on this show. Fujisawa nakajima yoshi tori. Kawana those are the four teams that are usually toward the top of the standings. In fact last year went tori. Kawana loss was the first time in like four years that a big fourteen had lost to a non fourteen. So i'm interested to see if maybe this younger junior team gets their way into the playoffs and knocks off one of the one of the the current big for the other thing to watch in terms of youth being served is team toma bitchy on the men's side. They have a third on this team named iwa matsubara and he is eleven years old. So you've got an eleven year old. Throwing third rocks for teams from dec- held that How he does and on the women's side. You have the lead on team ito who is twelve. So that's i mean pretty cool like when i was eleven and twelve I think i was still eating. Glue is some. I can't see on the rosty laid out here sweeping of youth being served of inside. It's where is go a okey. They did not qualify. They failed to qualify. Okay so so. They're kind of changed in japan. They did not do the wild card this year. It is just last year's champion last year's runner up in five Regional champions the skip from galway oki's team when they played in the twenty eighteen world championships. The skip on that team was misaki. Who use k. More zuma actually pulled away off. That team brought him into his team. some more zimny was the twenty eighteen representative for japan and then his team broke up right before the start of the twenty eighteen twenty nineteen season so he did not play twenty eighteen twenty nineteen and then last season brought in masaki easy way to play third from his third for him. They wound up making the final before losing to utah matsumura so there probably one be or to a us team. The matsumura team the defending champion. They're definitely your favourite on the men's side after matsumura others more zuma team Which includes two members of that two thousand eighteen olympic team as well as masaki way and then beyond that you have team yamaguchi Yama is probably best known for being in the middle of curling calendar Last time that it was produced But he played third for use came resume at the two thousand eighteen olympics. So the break-up of team more zuma kind of created a whole bunch of depth on the men's side there in japan because his second tetreault shimizu actually went to team. Matza marin made that team very strong then more zooming head to form his own team in yamaguchi formed his own teams so all of a sudden you went from having one clearly dominant team on the men's side in japan having three pretty solid teams but of those three really solid teams. You have a clear number one in the youtube. Matz marie team You do have some more youth. Here team mehta They're a they're a junior team the skip and the third from team majeida They were on the Twenty twenty youth olympic games team for japan. Which i believe finished second. They had a really strong showing At the youth olympic games. I believe but he's he's eighteen and he's skipping in his first japanese men's championship. So are there any other championships coming up now. There was the scottish elite and it looks like On bbc so actually got curling on tv here. And it was bruce. Morton team won the men's side and even your team on the women's side not they did. It wasn't genetic however it's gonna be there. They're still going to send bruce mallet and eve muirhead two worlds. There's no way that they're not honestly. Yeah no that's a separate conversation. I mean i mean it's quite lit joined scottish curling najer but then facebook. I think that's who's going to the world. If there is a world and be those are in all likelihood your olympic teams. I think based. I mean if you actually want to get deep into the weeds of scottish of scottish british curling. There's a policy selection document up on the british curling website that lays out the criteria for national team selection and team. Your heads kind of really far ahead on all the different criteria. It's basically between patterson mullet. But i think more what's For the men's side but mo- it's got the guts the the edge there for sure. Yeah i mean. He won all of these little tournaments that they did each month at the training center. So i mean it. It's it pretty much has to be him. The most interesting thing to come out of that is actually think that that roused whites your number two team in scotland now. I think that he's kind of leapt. Over patterson in terms of abilities. I think so i mean. I was kind of on the ross white bandwagon last year. They are deprived of the season to to kind of demonstrate that then they haven't had there been a normal season this year. I'm positive the team white would have qualified for slams. They were there are kind of moving up the points. Total pretty quickly So and i think once they got on tv people kinda see how good they are. But i definitely think they're the team to watch for the next quad but desert cove in time is kind of robbed them of the chance for this quad yet. They are outstanding. The only thing they're missing is consistency. And that will come as they as they. Hopefully the pandemic gins and dan we get to actually play a play. Morton's yeah so we'll see be interesting to see ryan. I'll know the pandemic's over when something is not cancelled like everything. The last year has been canceled. Hey everybody future. Jonathan in future ryan here. If you have been paying attention you heard us talking about world's a whole lot the during the last hour or so and that's because we recorded all of that on sunday while it's monday now and women's world has been officially cancelled. The health officials in switzerland would not give the world curling federation. The go ahead to go with a women's world's there in switzerland because they would not They would not approve of the protocols. That w cf head in place and said that it was going to put too much additional strain on the local health authority with all of the testing and that they wouldn't accept the increased risks that the world would bring their in switzerland. Nothing additional has been announced. Obviously there's a lot of disappointed players right now but it sounds like the w. Cf is working on a plan. B that plan. B could be one of many things if you look at reporting done by greg. Strong of the canadian press one of the things that there were looking at is the possibility of adding a women's competition to the calgary bubble. They're also looking at possibly running. In additional women's olympic qualification event in the fall of course the final olympic qualification event currently scheduled for december. And if you read between the lines on how things are phrased. It's not off the table that they could just select the teams that are going to the olympic so a lot of things still in the air on the women's side of course they have not They have not played the men's championships. It is still currently scheduled. For calgary will see how that goes forward however The canadian curling federation did tell greg strong that they fully expect that with the plans that they have in place for the bubble aaron calorie that they do expect men's worlds to go ahead Things that you're hearing is. Maybe maybe the protocols that were being put in place in switzerland weren't going to be quite as strong as what we were gonna see their in calgary and Honestly jonathan let's be. Let's not kid ourselves about what the purpose of a bubble is. The purpose of a bubble is not to protect the athletes from the community. The purpose of running a bubble is to protect the community from the athletes. So switzerland was not willing to accept the risks of bringing in teams for all over the world from all the world to play in a curling event. In as of right. Now calgary is. Yeah i don't. I'm i'm a little skeptical. So i kind of parse through the devon arose story in. It was all statements from curling canada. I haven't yet seen maybe someone's listening. They can send it to me. If it's been put out there but something from the government of canada 'cause they have the final say and as of right now and as it's been for basically the last year if you're not a canadian citizen It's very difficult if not impossible to enter canada so they they have done a bubble for the nhl but the nba was not allowed to play in canada. The blue jays were not allowed to run their season in canada. The raptors currently the tampa bay ratner raptors so I'm i'm a little skeptical side for the The world men's still not nothing. It's not going to happen. But i still think. There's a few more hurdles to clear. And i think if anything goes wrong at the scotties the earlier events it's basically be no game over for the curling bubble to yeah. That was kind of my thinking as well was if they're not letting the new york rangers into canada. They're not gonna let the us men's curling team in the candida but so far we have not seen anything saying that. Men's worlds is off the table. So we'll we'll see we still have some time and we'll have left some data points from the previous curling events in the calgary bubble to go off of as well so we'll take a wait-and-see approach on that but for now women's world's cancelled and we'll see if what they wind up doing with it One thing that they did say canceled. I bet that that is i. Bet there are contractual reasons for officially canceling some things that you can You can take advantage of a of a force majeure clause in there That's the only thing i can think of. As far as why they would cancel the event instead of calling. It postponed in seeing what they could do after everyone's vaccinated. Yeah i mean i. I suspect we're just gonna end up with some big super qualification event in the autumn I just think i've been kind of in the what's the rush. Crowd and oak curling geeks been pounding that as well you know get everyone getting vaccinated by march not going to happen. Most people Should be at least in north america and europe will probably have access to vaccines by the autumn right so the timescale winds up a lot better. I think for say just having a very intense autumn with with multiple qualification events. So why not do it. that way. the only i mean in terms of wire things being rushed As always the answer is follow the money. The only thing that i can guess is. There are some financial benefits to knowing now that you are qualified for the olympics in terms of of sponsorships or grant money That's the only thing. I can think of his term in terms of why they would want to know that they're qualified for beijing now versus six months from now and obviously the tv money right. So the tv revenues the world curling federation's largest source of money as it is for curling canada so losing two full seasons of that is not trivial. So i i completely understand why. Those organizations are pushing for it like the the financial cost the pandemic everywhere serious and for those bodies losing that kind of revenue that advertising that that tv revenue is gonna put a pretty big dent in long-term finances for those organizations to tv ratings for the event in the whichever world is held in canada under certain year are just naturally going to be hired just because of time zone differences like every candidate can tune in for all of the draws for the event held in canada whereas when it's in the when the event is in asia or europe. There's going to be draws that. You're just not gonna be able to tune into because they're in the middle of the night so that's probably also another factor into why men's worlds hasn't been canceled yet so we'll continue to monitor. We'll continue to let you know but for now Women's world is cancelled in so far. Everything else is currently scheduled to go go as planned but Check out our social media accounts for Streaming schedules of the events that are currently ongoing. All right back to the end of the show. Okay so we got a few other things to announce so first thing. Curling Case Study: Indianas Fort Wayne Curling Club
"You're listening to rocks across the pond. The curling podcasts. That goes around the globe looking for the stories. In the world's coolest sport we have curling news news for everyone whether you're playing in your thursday league or following your favorite teams on tour now here your host brian magee and our professor appeal jonathan. Haber cross everybody. Welcome back to across the pond. It's a curling. podcast coming to you from richmond. Virginia my name is ryan mcgee and joining me as always in southampton england is our professor. Appeal jonathan hovercraft jonathan. How are you doing today doing. Well how are you doing. I'm doing all right. Man not bad. I hear some birds. I think that's actually the neighbor mowing. So i'm going to have to do some creative editing with this show all right but we do have a really good show. We have an interview coming up in. Just a minute with craig fisher from fort wayne curling club. He's gonna tell us the really personal story of how he got into curling and the journey his club went through going from curling on arena skating ice to one dedicated facility with three sheets to then detonated facility with four sheets all in the span of about a decade. It's pretty crazy ride. And it's something that. I think a lot of clubs around the. Us can probably learn a lot from. Yeah it's kinda great touch base with craig so we both met him back in two thousand thirteen. 'cause his club. I think it was he was he was in. Charge of the event hosted the first arena nationals curling championship and is the podcast. The they weren't allowed back because they got a dedicated ice. Almost right away they graduated. Yeah so yeah. And it's a great story. I think it shows what's possible when when a group of people really kinda pull together decide decide. They want to do something so before we get into that interview. We do have kind of a lot of curling news to cover here. Jonathan you wanna go through what's been going on in the curling world before we talked to craig sure. Why do we got what we got ryan so first up. We have kind of if say a surprise. Your time to kinda surprised me but elena stern from team stern in switzerland has announced that she is retiring from competitive curling. She's a twenty six year old. Skip who had a grand slam title under her belt and she won the twenty twenty swiss title. Unfortunately her team did not get the play at the twin twenty worlds Basically she said she's just ready for the next chapter of her life More importantly she's been a voice for lgbt issues not just in curling but also regarding an upcoming vote in september where swiss citizens will get to vote on. If gay marriage will finally be legal in switzerland if you haven't seen it please check out the panel discussion on. Lgbtq a. plus inclusion that was hosted by a global initiative for dia in curling that elena participated in from. May you can find that at the global initiatives youtube channel while elaine. Stern is retiring the fourth from the her team. Brier her lemon Will continue to focus on competitive curling and she has joined up with the team skipped by her sister corey and she's gonna throw fourth stones for that team. Jonathan were you. Were you surprised. By this. As i was Yeah i mean to win a slam. Step away twenty. Six is a bit surprising. But we never know what's going on in people's lives or whatever opportunities may come up so we wish her kind of luck with the next stage for sure but I suspect we'll see a shuffle in switzerland kind of like we didn't canada at the end of the the end of next season. Right where we've seen the end of every quad but we'll have to see how things shake out for the other teams. Do you think this'll be a trend. Do you think will start losing players at younger and younger ages in competitive curling. I mean i think it depends what we mean by competitive curling but it does seem like a lot of the national teams are going to kind of pro model. Where you're you're basically paid to be a fulltime curler and it's you don't picked up national program in your early. Twenties does kind of ask the question of what else yourself In that you know if you're not being paid to curl and your competition the country is being paid to carl but the professional ones are just going to get a lot lot better than the question is. How much of your career can you afford to put on. Hold moving to saskatoon. The four curling clubs in saskatoon are in need of financial support to survive the four curling clubs. There have received options from the city to address the financial strife they are in following the covid nineteen pandemic however due to previous property tax hikes. They ever see from the city. They believe that none of the four options are enough to help. Keep them afloat and most wouldn't go into effect until two thousand twenty two granite curling club gm. Steve turner told c. Tv news a hybrid of two of the options where clubs would receive a break on the previously increase property taxes until a recreation in sports grant program is enacted would be the best option for the clubs. You can read this full story at saskatoon dot c. tv news dot ca. Yeah that's a. That's a kind of canadian specific problem. I remember backing back when i was living in canada. A lot of clubs kind of been a land for for decades if not the century and quite frankly the property values allies places shoot up especially in city centres right and so at some point. The the property tax may become so largest is taking a significant bite out of the operating Difficult for the club to operate I remember that was actually a prominent. Mike club growing up was was how high the property taxes news. Out of maine here in the. Us where belfast. Curling club in belfast maine Recently discovered that a pipe had burst. this flooding that resulted from the pipe. Bursts caused significant damage to their bar and warm room. There is a few rooms in their club. That are just going to have to be completely gutted. They've actually had started. Go fund me to try and help raise some money to help. Finish this refurbishment They said that all in all there was about two hundred fifty dollars or two two hundred eighteen thousand dollars worth of damage and then after the insurance settlements and the portion that the club feels it can contribute It looks like they're going to have to either raise or borrow approximately one hundred fifty thousand dollars to get their club. Backup in running You can find more details and find the go fund me ask bill fest. Carlin club dot org so good luck to bill s curling club there in maine. Yeah hopefully they'll get that sorted out Kind of a cool launch here. Some of the folks that we've talked to on twitter a lot are the folks who run the curling robots twitter account and one of the people behind that account has now launched a new program to support lgbtq plus and bipasha people in curling You can find Her new initiative at lgbtq underscore peo c underscore curl on twitter And they're just looking to share resources and share stories and kinda. Just help one help support. Lgbtq plus and bipasha people in curling but also kind of help educate Those of us who who need to be educated on their experiences and what we can do to to be more inclusive here in the sport. That sounds good. I'm trying to add that account. Just log onto twitter account to add. It was last time you were on twitter. I think it's just the that posts all of your academic papers. As i've seen i think is was actually got quite involved in a conversation with some swanky academics. You you'd probably be bored by it. Surprised as. i said. i'm surprised that they weren't Anyway to new zealand recently new zealand held their curling nationals. The women's champions were skipped by bridget. Becker they went forno in a double round robin meeting. A championship game was not necessary She skipped last new team that new zealand sent to the pac seas. Way back in twenty seventeen so hopefully we'll see the new zealand women back at peace. Pac's here sometimes. They're on the inside. Sean becker beat anton hood for the men's championship. Sean is the older brother of bridget. And scott becker is also the skip of the twenty nineteen new zealand national team at. Acc are sorry. Scott was the skip of the twenty thousand nine new zealand team at. Pac sees a plate on that team also represented new zealand at the twenty twenty one mixed doubles world's new zealand does a national team selection so these are not necessarily the teams that are that you would see at a hypothetical twenty twenty one. Pac's yeah and it's good to see a a national championship going And hopefully hopefully we'll get the pac's back this autumn moving onto our final bit of curling news and it's another national tournament. this time. The team that wins would be the team that would represent their country at the pac pac's and that is the korean championships. They get underway. June twenty third at the gang young curling center which hosted the twenty eighteen olympic games. It's going to be held in three segments. The first segment will run june twenty third through twenty eighth. The second one will run. June thirtieth through july second and at second segment with there will scale down to just the top four teams on the men's and women's side and then if necessary a third segment would run fourth through seventh so the way that's going to work as if the same team wins the first and second segments than that's gonna be your korean national team For the next year and if two different teams win then you're going to have a best of seven that gets run july fourth seventh and so the reason this tournament is important. Is it's going to determine the team that is going to be korea's representative throughout this entire curling season so this is the team that would go to. Pac's it's the team that will go to the world. Qualification event is the team that would represent korea at the olympics in. It's the team that would go to the world championships in twenty twenty two so a big tournament especially for a country that has seen a lot of success lately especially on the women's side On the women's side you have kind of three favorites which is keen on young. Kim mingy in kim when she those are your three favorites Kim jong beat kim on she in last year's championship team. Kim is obviously the team that won silver. at the twenty eighteen olympics. They then recaptured the korean championship last year. They argue defending champion. They went seven and six at worlds this year after starting owen four and missed the playoffs on head to head tiebreakers. Thus the korean women will have to go to the world qualification event. Kim on she won in two thousand nineteen and finished third at the twenty nineteen. pacs's but worlds were cancelled that year. She did qualify for world's by going eight. Zero at the world qualification event but obviously covid nineteen had other plans for that team and then finally kim mingy kim. Gee this is the team that That we recently saw at world juniors the team that we recently saw at the two grand slam events that were held in the calgary bubble She last one korean nationals in twenty eighteen she won the pacific asia championships that fall and then went on to win bronze at worlds and she has a twenty sixteen world junior bronze in twenty twenty world silver to her name so at twenty one years old Kim mingy has accomplished a lot. So it'll be really interesting to see if she's able to topple the twenty. Eighteen olympic. silver medalist Kim jong To become team korea. So if. I think that that's definitely a tournament to watch because the team coming out of the women side one should qualify for the olympics in into should be one of the favorites at the olympics. At least a metal all three of those teams really strong. I the olympic qualification event. Though is gonna be brooks also have gb in there. I in japan and japan right. So i guess in theory all three ago but there's not much margin for error. So that'll be. That'll be interesting to see. I have to say i love. The best of seven format like to see a bit more out of a series flying curling's on kind of like the we use that as their final decider and other russians might be might be an interesting format for other event Especially for determining your your olympic your olympic. Didn't the scots do that at one point. Didn't they have a best of five or a best of seven to determine who was going to be team. Gb at a recent olympics didn't they maybe twenty fourteen because last time it was it was just straight up selection But i think they have in the past us a series other names to watch on the women's side Shingai guy young. She played third on the team. That finished fourth last year's korean championships and she's now skipping her own team in the shea This is an eighteen year old high school. skip who went to in four it last year's championship She also won the national high school competition that was held in may in korea Unfortunately for her believe. She is in the same pool as kim jong in gym on she. So it's gonna be tough for her to crack that top four to make the second stage of the korean championships on the men's side. So this is interesting jonathan in. I think that this kind of makes korea one of the dark horses on the inside as we start looking at the olympic qualifier and in the olympics is kimes hayek in kim chang min have joined forces so these two skips had combined to win nine korean championships in a row before jong suk won last year's trend championships. So you had nine in a row. That were won by these two guys. They are now playing together with kim. Chang men who was the skip of the twenty eighteen olympic team for korea joining team sue. Hayek i think that this team should be the overwhelming favourite to win the korean championship. And then if they do. I think they'll be very formidable at the olympic qualifier in potentially at the olympics. Too because back in two thousand eighteen. Kim chang men was i think he was one game away from getting into a tiebreaker. I think he was like the last team out. Of of course there was a tiebreaker on the inside at last year's olympic so i think he finished sixth just out of the outside of that tiebreaker. So you put these two guys together. I think it's kind of a formidable team immediately. You mean in terms of qualifying for the olympics or in terms of winning the championship will no. I'm talking about for qualifying for the olympics in them potentially making playoffs at the olympics. Now i mean yeah definitely i think i think we've seen just a general rise of asia in the greater parity. We saw both world championships this year. All three world champion writing off any of the top twelve countries that well maybe top ten countries in the world right. Now i'd say it would be and then looking down the line at world's twenty twenty two. It's a world's that's going to be held after an olympics. Kind of a water downfield there. They would be there as the korean champion. I think that there's the potential there for them to finally win the first men's medal at a world for the pacific asia region in they finished fourth right at the last twenty. Eighteen korea finished fourth. I believe so so. Yeah there's precedent for them. Having a good good showing in that olympic year worlds other names to watch on the inside John young sook He won last year screen championship and then went to an eleven at world's ye kijang. This is the former third. For kim chang min. He's teamed up with another skip. That's had some success. Recently in korea named balked jong wook He skipped his own team for the last couple of years. After playing with teams who hayek in made a world appearance ye kaijiang skipped the twenty seventeen world junior gold medalists in then represented career in mixed doubles at the twenty eighteen olympic. Soak of formidable team there. this could be your darkhorse team in. They'll also have the best uniforms at the tournament. Jonathan yeah. I think they're a former junior championship team very strong. I think there's depth on the site to right. It's kind of kind of been saying this rundown so i think they're. They're kind of fermentable team. I wouldn't sleep on the other during. That's right a a junior team that you're familiar with ugi bomb He skipped korea last two world. Junior bs that you were at in kisa kallio. And he's now joined a team with a guy name. Kim young bin you finished fourth last year at the korean championships name. You're familiar with I think he's kind of in contention there to kind of make that that second stage but definitely kind of far behind the two teams that have joined forces in terms of actually winning this tournament. Yeah i mean. I wouldn't say there are favourite to win but they're very strong team. We've played them once a very strong technical team. Call a good game too so they certainly wouldn't Wouldn't be out of place in this field and could definitely gonna pull a few upsets automated run to other. Good news is a bunch of games. From this tournament. We're going to be broadcast on the korea. Curling federation's new youtube channel The name of the channel is in korean. So it's tough to find an english unless you have the direct wing so we will provide that in the show notes as well as on our socials As the term it gives under under way if you do speak korean. Just search youtube before curling. Tv in korean. You should be able to find it so it's gonna be fun to watch this tournament again. I think that Especially on the women's side Watching team from two thousand eighteen. By ki-moon jong i mean that's a that's a team to watch for. So if if she wins on the women's side and then The team wins on the men's side. I think you have to vary formidable. Teams that korea will be putting up against the rest of the world as the season goes on. Yeah i think the oh. Qe is gonna be really exciting. I think this is going to you know. I think this is going to be the biggest version of this. Since they've been running this so in korea will definitely strand strong. Strong delicto. Both men's and women's jonathan. Aren't you curling that weekend to the weekend of july. Oh yeah. I am hopefully there. We go all right. Let's get onto our interview with craig fisher from fort wayne curling club once again. They are club that went from arena to a three sheet or two four-seater kind of all in the span of. Jeez i think about five years. They're jonathan krisel craig's. Give us the story Really great to talk to him so please enjoy our conversation with craig. Alright we are joined by craig fisher from fort wayne curling club in. He's gonna tell us about kind of the unique journey that his club win on in order to get to four sheets of dedicated curling ice in fort wayne indiana craig. Thank you so much for for coming on with us today. Yeah no problem thanks for having. We'll just get started. It's the same question that we ask Most of our guests that come on. It's actually one that. I stole from a rugby league. Podcast but the they always ask their first guests From what was it like growing up there so from long island bat called sale about miles out from new york city on the south shore of long island in suffolk county. Closest large larger town is a town called patchy fog long island is sprawling suburbia You don't even know where one town ends in the next one begins. But you're short train ride to new york city which is awesome so good place to to grow up More difficult place to settle at college because that areas is quite expensive but Grew up there went to college in hoboken new jersey overlooking the hudson river in manhattan and lived in hoboken for a number of years. But i've been in fort wayne indiana now for about twenty five years in however you first introduced curling. It's an interesting story. So my wife and i are. The parents of a child with special needs at the son with autism who back in two thousand six was twelve years old and we were watching the two thousand six olympics. And i believe that was to reno but could be wrong And you know my wife. As as any of the strange things i've done in my life is typically due to an idea that she came up with but she said you know i think. Curling is something that grayson. My son could do with us so we went on the internet found. The closest curling club was in bowling green ohio. Which at that point was about two and a half draw two and half hour drive each way and we signed up for the did two week. A two week learnt girls and we signed up for three of them so we immediately after the olympics. We curled for sundays in a row. Myself my wife. My son. My sister-in-law gale and my in one of the club members with the mickey who had been going to culinary school with my wife and we had a blast and we found it was something or some could do And we're really excited about it and as you know curling season shortly after the olympics which while the olympics are a great thing for curling the timing of the olympics likely could not be much worse so we had six weeks in and then they shut down for the summer in the next year. They only offered curling for us. On tuesday nights in there was no way. I could drive two and a half hours each way with thirteen year old kid on tuesday night so we gave it up for four years until we ended up. Starting club in fort wayne is the i mean. Is the family aspect. Kind of what made you want to stick with it. Just the fact that you guys could all do that together. Absolutely the whole reason we started the club was it was something that my son could play with us in for individuals or that have children with special needs. There's very few sports that you can play with your child where you can enjoy the game to the fullest. If i play basketball with my son. I can't play basketball to to my fullest in but it's actually a team sport where you can assist him when he's doing his shot but when it's my turn to throw i can throw as if i'm playing in any other game so it was. We just found that it was a unique sport for individuals with special needs to play alongside. Their parents sibling her siblings or peers and that sort of ignited the fire. You know so. We gave it up after the two thousand ten olympics. Once again my life idea you know we should try again to get. Something started up here in fort wayne and they just opened up a brand new ice rink three sheet facility and it wasn't even open yet actually. It was constructed but not yet open in. We were able to to start some discussions with them about About but starting curling Curling club within their facility. So were you is it. Just you and your wife at the beginning when the club was getting going or did you have other contacts in the area show we. We went online and we found an individual by the name of dan mccoy had started a facebook page website for fort wayne carlin so are like oh. This is great. Somebody's already doing this. And we can tag along. This is going to be awesome. We call dan been in. It was really excited about getting a call for me and so we ask him. What status is you end. He's created a facebook page in a website just to gauge interest. I haven't done anything else. But it's interesting in. Oh six when we after we tried curling retried to start something fort wayne in. There was only two sheets of ice in the whole town. Foin sort of hockey mad town. There was absolutely no way we could get any time and it wasn't in the best neighborhood and but we had heard about a a fairly elite curler who lived in town. But i was never able to get a hold of him and But i try. I tried for two or three months to try to get hold of this guy and was never able to do it when i spoke to. Dan mccoy in two thousand ten says. Oh by the way. I've gotten hold of of dr greg eichner who this elite curler so we set up this meeting. I got a note from him the day before the meeting saying am excited to talk to you about curling blah blah and. Oh by the way my wife says hi she used to work with you so i had actually worked closely with his wife but had never mentioned curling. They had different last names. Both being doctors i had no idea that it was his wife and i could have found him in two thousand six if i tried and probably. It's probably fortuitous. That i didn't because we probably would talked. Got him somewhat excited. It would have fallen apart because there was no really is that we could get and the fact that you know our contact waited until two thousand ten meant that that the timing was right for something to actually happen that so he remained excited in interesting story. But but probably fortuitous that we never got to and so so. How quickly were you able to feed the arena club. Gone so it's it's a bit of a whirlwind So we met you know. Olympics were late february We met for the first time on on. And i may be off a few days here. But roughly may march fifth roughly june fifth. We were on the ice with rocks holding. I learn to curl and august. Fifteenth or eighteenth. Roughly we held a forty team. Bonn spiel on on h. Sheets How did you recruit forty teams to to a rink that never had curling before. First of all as you probably know. Curlers love to go to the first bondsteel at a new place so curlers just supportive of new clubs starting up so that was part of it up. Greg had greg was elite. Curler played in. The olympic trials in in five leading up to the six olympics were fence in the bronze medal so he had lots and lots of connections in the curling community. But i would say so. He was able to get us introduced to a number of other clubs but in a clubs like indianapolis columbus bowling green Detroit all were like. Hey new club. Let's go let's do it so it you know it was. It was interesting the whole reason we held the spiel was because it was sort of a requirement of the rink when when we started to talk to them first of all they blew us off said curling stuff. I get calls all the time about that and we said no no no. We're gonna start our own club. We're gonna get our an agreement all we need from us mice time and a place to store the rocks. So they said okay. We'll come in and talk. We started talking and they're one requirement was. They wanted us to run a tournament because they started up. They just started up a new restaurant up there in wanted to generate revenue food and beverage revenue for the for the restaurant. So so i stupidly said. Yeah sure we'll run a tournament and you know isothiocyanate we started talking about. How many teams. I was aiming for forty eight so in fact i was disappointed at forty. Greg thought i was insane thinking any number close to that at hal mcgrady out of columbus called me up instead. All excited you guys are starting to club. How many teams at your boss feels forties fourteen teams. That's pretty good for a brand new club said doughnut. Fourteen four zero forties like holy. Crap had to do that. You know it's we. We've gone into this whole thing just a somewhat ignorant on purpose you know. Usa and others have put together some put together. Some materials saying You know how do these things and purposely didn't look at that saying we think maybe hubris on our part but we thought we felt. We're just gonna do it our way and and see if we can do it better if we can if we can build a better mousetrap doing it our way and obviously in some respects. You know. we've been successful in that given given track record of near so after the bonds spiel had it you get like the club going was displaying a couple of times. A week was only other innovations. You tried to get the growth going. And how many members did you get kind of out of the gate. Sure so we. We helped right after right after the first meeting in march restarted holding some introductory meetings at the rink just promoting the newspaper getting people to come out and one of the things we did to fund this right to fund. The equipment is is we did look pay us a thousand dollars now and we'll give you a twelve hundred dollar credit with the club right. We needed money up front. Need some people to take a bit of risk so we could out and buy these rocks and everything else so we had a number of people that were willing to step up and take the risk and do that so that helped us fund up the the rocks in the equipment. We needed We had so out of those meetings. Actually we immediately got about eighty six people in fort wayne for people's information. The city of about three hundred thousand people and curling is not well-known. Right the only time people know about curling. The olympics in the american public seems to totally forget about it just disappears from their consciousness at least back in those days and then four years later they'd be. Oh what's this. I've never seen it again right. So you know curling was was not in. We're not coming from the meccas of curling where everybody knows it in things of that nature so we were actually pretty happy to get eighty six people right out of the gate willing to step up and put money down so we held some some rookie leagues some our games. We had six weeks where we had three. Learn to herald three or four And then six weeks of one hour games leading up to the bonn which had a four-game guarantees so our local curlers had curled to our learn to curl and six one hour game eight hours total lives and then curled eight hours that weekend myself included. You know ignoring the times. I've done it for years previous. I could barely walk up the steps on saturday. Night at lonsdale. It was It was a big task for for all of our newbie curlers sedan we did the bond spill then we went straight into leagues and we were curling two nights a week like in arena. Times aren't always optimal so we were originally nine thirty to eleven thirty on monday nights and then we had a saturday eight to ten time and like you know like every arena club especially with those hours right. It's tough to keep those people you need. We we had four sheets so you need. You have a maximum capacity of thirty two people we paying over three hundred dollars an hour for ice. We are charging people twenty or twenty five bucks session. We needed to have thirty people on the ice to break even with a maximum capacity of thirty two. You have new people come and say hey we want to join and you don't have anywhere to put them so that's always a challenge in. I would say. I've heard you know other things other arena clubs are doing that. The probably were better than what we did. But we struggled like every other club to maintain membership so we were eighty six one year in seventy five the next and sixty and then really by the time in two thousand thirteen round rena nationals. When you i met shortly thereafter. We were like that september. We were twenty four active curlers so we had twenty four active curlers when we built our facility just so it is a bit of context right. So you mentioned fort wayne's about three hundred thousand people aside from the curling. I what is it. The what is it about fort wayne. That's kind of special. Why do you like it there. And why do you think is anything about that community in particular that made it ripe for for a startup curling club. You know i would say for wayne's a nice small city it's it's been an adjustment for me coming from new york city and i've been here twenty five years. I'm almost adjusted There it's what's great about it is it's it's cheap very inexpensive And you know it's somewhat sheltered so kids can grow up here fairly sheltered compared to many other metropolitan areas which is which is great and in certain industries. It's it's good so in. Lots of lots of industry in fort wayne is is small manufacturers feeding into the automotive industry so i ended up here working in insurance. And there's only really one major life insurance company so After i left there since two thousand four. I've been working virtually but what you know. There's it's Hockey mad town. So there's lots of hockey it. It lacks the diversity of recreational activities. That many cities have and i think that's one of the things that really made it ideal to starting up a curling club especially in the winter. There's really not a lot from a recreational standpoint at least back then you know. The city is has grown significantly in the time. I've been here since the time we started the club. So there's a lot more opportunities you know built a speech fieldhouse parkview field house that volleyball basketball all of those sorts of things in really before we started the club There really wasn't as much of that or at least if there was i was you know wasn't well enough known than i knew about it. Show providing it recreational activity for people during winter when there wasn't a whole lot else available Really worked out well for us. Starting he has also. Have the best ballpark ever been to. It's my favourite wine. I've been to like sir. I've been to like seventy in the one in fort wayne is my favorite. Yeah so they That happened since we built the since we started the club. When you start club they were at a small stadium up by the coliseum but yeah they've done one thing for is done in. Perhaps i skipped over a lot of other stuff. But they've invested. If started to invest over the last fifteen years significantly the downtown area. When i first moved to fort wayne in downtown was was a business than in a ghost town but they really started to invest in downtown in a lot of different ways and one of the biggest. Things was was putting the ballpark ballpark downtown. It is it is one of the top minor league ballparks in the united states and has won awards in just a lot of fun for sure and you know. Hopefully we can just getting started. They just started back up. You know they didn't run it all last year. So they can from from kovin to kill it as they have been over the last number of years so correct me if i'm wrong but if my memory even before you had a dedicated curling club you're hosting not just that forty person bonds peel but like an actual. Wc t. event and then you think even had even your head for your team to the fort wayne or so. Yeah so So what happened is we ran the bond spiel. The what was called the fort wayne summer spiel for a couple of years. Greg was it was the driving wasn't is a driving member of the club and you know he's an elite curler so he had an interest in in running a cash field so we started probably in two thousand twelve may might have been two thousand eleven or two thousand twelve. We started running a cash field component. So when we started this summer spiel we ran an open. Because if you're a brand new club that has only curl for six hours. Having a full open getting killed by. Everybody isn't fun so we did an open in a five and under division within the summer spiel each year. And then i don't remember was a two thousand eleven to two thousand twelve we added a a cash spiel and in fact one of the winners of the cash is probably two thousand eleven. That restarted it. But i think in two thousand twelve. The cascio was worn by other than scott mcdonnell. Which is pretty cool to see him years later in briar in twenty thirteen. And when we started doing that not only did. Greg get organized in bring his in a lot of his contacts in he also brought jerry gert san which which helped quite a bit. So jerry was. They're doing it a number of things in a couple of those years and then in two thousand thirteen which was the start of the olympic. You know cycle last year towards the olympics. Usa curling approached us. We adjust run. We were running every nationals. When they approached us we hadn't done it yet but they approached us about running a women's spiel women's cash phelan. One of the one of the eccentricities of of the points is that If you can have all cash deals and men can earn points but if women compete in the event with men they don't earn or merit points so it has to be a women only event for them to order to win or merit points so they asked us to run an event given the success. We'd had with runner cash field etc and we were like. Yeah we can do that. He's never gonna fill it and they said don't worry will fill it and so they had a requirement that all four teams that were then eligible to become the us women's olympic team. So courtney georgia's team allison pottinger team. Cassie pods team. In erica. browns team were required to attend the event Eve muirhead so dark brown reached out to your head and got her to attend and it just so happen that that the chinese teams were practising in blaine and they were able to get them to come down so been. You can down with with the team at the time so we had those four. Us teams muirhead the to chinese teams. And then you know with that sort of caliber. Lots of interest in other teams in Having an opportunity to play against those people so so yeah we ran eddie. Ran a ten team. Women's cash feel that year teen women's attempting men's ten team open team Five and under so that was forty the year before actually ran a sixty team bonds beyond twelve once again Total ignorance on our part of what a what a herculean task that is until after the fact but yeah so we ran forty teams forty eight teams sixty teams and then forty teams in four years. We ran that last year. We had all of those olympic teams in previous years. You know John betton had played in the event. Hamilton played And tyler. George had played supplies. So we'd had you know elite curlers people on the rise dropkin so corean. Stephen dropkin played actually corey one. Our first so it must have been two thousand eleven that we ran our first one. 'cause korean stephen dropkin came in with their team in. They ended up winning the cash field the first year and then scott donald one. So yeah we did some we did simple stuff plus hosting arena the inaugural arena arena nationals. Which six months later we were ineligible for so we hosted it could again 'cause we dedicated facility now six months so that brings me to our next question which is at what point. Did you guys decide. It's time to start pursuing a curling only facility. You know so so greg. Having curled on dedicated ice his whole life you know quickly realized that is was was sub optimal especially for people at his level. So he'd been pushing for awhile of when do you think we could get dedicated ice To some extent. I would imagine you know. He was starting to think about how how much longer he wanted to curl on arena ice. Because it's it's you know for somebody at his level. It would be pretty disappointing but it really wasn't until we started to look at the next olympic cycle. It was in early. Twenty thirteen and looking at the upcoming olympic cycle looking at how our membership had decreased year over year. And the fact that we likely wouldn't get up. We wouldn't get sufficient ice time during the olympics to run enough. Learn to curl to get up above that level and we decided that i personally didn't have an interest in fighting for another four years to keep the club afloat in reno model so we either needed to build a dedicated facility in hopes. They'll come or the club was gonna fade into oblivion and. We weren't willing to do that so early in in i would say looking back. Perhaps march of twenty thirteen. We started to to build a business case in. Start to look at facilities. I think it was during arena at night was during the and The summers feel in in august that we had found a facility. Did an open house for our members to come out and look at it about. We probably spent four or five months looking facilities in in building. The business case you know we started with the idea of will build something from scratch in quickly realized it wasn't economically feasible for us But found after talking to portland in columbus which were then the two warehouse conversion locations that that were that had been completed. We realized that that was a model that we can make. Were you know from a fiscal perspective. Yeah at that arena nationals. I remember one of your curlers. And i mean shoot. It may have been you. It's been eight year so my memory starting to fade but Someone from your club was talking about pursuing the concept that you guys dubbed the ice Can you kind of explain what that was. And what advantages it had for your group short so as we were building the business case You know we. It was a pretty daunting task. Right to to be able to fund all this and so from the outset we sorta resort saddled on a concept of legalized. We're gonna bill we're gonna do. We're gonna get ice such that. It's legal that we can occupy the building and everything else. We're gonna worry about later so we didn't. We tried to set people's expectations that were not going to build the taj mahal. Right out of the gate. But we're going to do it. Takes to get legal. Ice that can legally be used and then build from there in the end we were successful enough with our fundraising and or Some of us stupid enough to put in enough cash of our own To to do much more than that right we. We built a pretty nice club and abandoned. The concept of legalized idea was even going gesture to an ice rink with not much around it where the ice is dedicated is better to grow the club than in arena model. Where you're dealing with bad is time. Poor-quality quality is expensive for our rates etc. But the model at the outset was. Let's get in some place where we can have our on ice we you know we may not be able to raise the funds to build a nice warm room and everything else but once we saw curling on on dedicated curling ice. It'll be easier to grow the cloud. And then we can fund all the sales sort of the concept of legalize so so headed the fundraising. Go for you guys visit primarily like just the membership or were you able to reach out to the community as well you know. The challenges is curling. Wasn't all that well known in the community back then and instill isn't to some extent. But we've we've certainly made inroads in that regard so it was primarily funded through members of corporate sponsorships. Were fairly low level. We tried for grants in some other things but Your grants are tough because very few of them support capital projects. Most of them are program based and You know people didn't know about furlough going to a business in saying yeah you should you fund some of this in get advertising on the back end is a bit too much of a stretch so you know there were a number of our club members you know five or six that were willing to give twenty grand piece a couple that gave significantly more and you know quite a few the gave less but through all that we were able to come up with. I think just shy. Three hundred thousand to to get that first facility built and there was some financing of of the ice equipment And obviously it's it's a rank facility so you didn't have upfront downpayment costs or anything like that. We're able to make it happen for about two seventy five so you guys all real estate market. What were you looking for other than obviously size. Obviously a building large enough to get curling sheets in there were there. Was there anything else on your checklist that you were looking for. You know a few things right obviously wanted a our goal was viewing of the ice from the end as opposed to the side because i believe it is optimal for spectators to be looking down the sheet of ice as opposed to looking at it from the side. We wanted You know a decent you know exposure wanted to be in a major area. We taken whatever we got right but we would have preferred to have been on a reasonably major thoroughfare and allow us to get some exposure in those. Were probably the two big things. The we got we went. We probably looked at fifty different places and in really the one that we found that really worked We looked at everything from distribution centers. That had twenty five garage doors or around it in figuring out how we're going to insulate all of that to an old bowling alley that was about two lanes short of what would be needed to really put in a curling is there and then we also the other concern about that is there was a church across the street there. Some arcane alcohol laws in indiana where you can't get a liquor license within a thousand yards of church or something like that so that That would have been a little bit of a challenge but But the place we ended up getting was hundred yards south of the ice. Rinks the ice rink that we've been dealing with on a major thoroughfare You know the downside is looked like straw from the outside when you drove past it. It didn't look like there was a curling club in there. Just look like shop. So everybody drove buys of that must be where their offices are curl at the at the at the ice rink but in fact there was a warehouse behind it that was not visible from the road So that means that was probably the biggest downside of the facility that we got other than you know. Three sheets is was the sort of capacity but But we got really really lucky in that. It was so close to the to the area we're used to curl at nobody could say it's too far now. You know if we had something on the south side somebody coming from way up. North may have said it's too far but literally one hundred yards from our from our ice rank that we started at so that we got really lucky there. So can you take us through the conversion process so what was the hardest part about taking this building and turning it into a curling rink boy it. The hardest part was getting volunteers right so we had twenty four active members. You always get twenty percent. Volunteers of any group doing significant volunteering. And you know the significant portion of do anything. So i would say labor. You know we try to do as much as we could ourselves. We we were able to take a friend of mine who was in the construction industry in convince him to help us in exchange for free kurland though his firm ended up being the general contractor forest for free. That was one way we save money. You know we had what we have to do right. We had to take to do demolition which we did ourselves there. Certain things you have to contract out from from a legal standpoint so the framing stuff like that we had to have all the framing done we had to have all the fire suppression. Everything else handled Plumbing at to be outsourced in that sort of stuff. We gaba named jim. Hubbard helped us with the ice. He helped you know he's done a lot lot lot of curling clubs he had done columbus. He had done portland. He's done probably thirty at clubs after after he did us. Cert seems like that He helped in engage us a lot of the knowledge in our construction experts that we brought in gave us a lot lot of the knowledge. I i'd say the biggest surprise that we had So you may have seen clubs that have what's called a low ceiling that it looks like a tinfoil that sits over the ice in it helps reduce your your a cost to chill the the ice room a that. Lowey ceiling doesn't go wall to wall allows the hot air to go up above it. Our facility was sprinkled and you can't unspeakable a facility right if you go into a warehouse and you're gonna change gears. You can't make a building less safe than was so we had to continue to add sprinkled. You can make the case that putting sprinklers over ice probably isn't the you know the necessary World but the but building codes aren't built with caroline clubs in mind so but anyway what we found is we've got the sprinklers done. We were getting to to put up the lowest ceiling. And we find that because it doesn't go wall to wall we actually have to sprinkle both above the low ceiling below the lowest ceiling. So you know. After we had the sprinklers then we had to go back and put additional sprinkler heads on their at at an additional expense. When you know when so something and we ran into the same circumstances in the new facility with with smoke alarms you gotta do above and below that lowey ceiling. If it had gone wall to wall we would have been fine but because airflow would go up in flames. Go up over you needed to to do the fire suppression or fire detection both above and so just wanted to adler so when once you were able to move into the facility. What were some of the new challenges you face like what was the what was the biggest obstacle from opening till till about a year end. Say yeah i'd say the biggest thing is that It takes a certain level of work to run an arena club and takes ten times more work to run a dedicated club. Right you've got. You gotta maintain the ice. You've gotta manage the bar. You've gotta clean the thing you gotta you know all these other things that perhaps we hadn't really suspected so for the other than the ice which we had a great team of guys that stepped up from the outset to do the ice. But other than that you know running a to learn to curls organizing more leagues. All that sort of stuff fell to me for out the first year. So the amount of work after you know. You're you're working in. What was i working. I was. I was actually doing my day job from the construction site so i was there from seven in the morning until eleven o'clock at night we get done were open and then you know there's just as much work practically on the other side of it so and we were challenged in that start with twenty four members when with dedicated ice. We we grew quickly right. We opened up a month before the olympics. After the olympics we had we're back to eighty members But for that period of time you know getting people to step up and do tasks and that was the challenge. There is a lot of work that needed to be done. And you know we were a bit overwhelmed. I would say with the amount of effort it takes to maintain a dedicated curling club having come from the arena world where you showed up once a week and and You know you did a little bit of spreadsheet work to maintain your your leagues but everything else And so how long after you were in this new facility. Did you decide to move to the next facility. The four sheep so once again we never. We never plan anything in advance right. We just bring stuff. We were coming up on the five year. Renewal of the lease we had written was a five year. Lease with a five year. Pre-negotiating renewal actually two additional five year pre negotiated renewals so in essence. The five years was coming up. We needed to to opt in for that five year renewal and we were committing ourselves to another five years and we were so with that would have been january of of While now talking probably went up. October of twenty eighteen so over the summer probably early summer. June july we. I brought it up with the board and we decided collectively as a board that we needed to do our due diligence before signing up for another five years we were growing. We were growing your year. You know we could foresee an instance where if growth continued in jumped a little bit. We would we would have more people in the club than than than was optimal for us. Right we'd be we'd have. We'd have to have three draws night and that isn't always optimal on weeknights etc. So we said well we need to do the due-diligence make sure there's not something else available before we sign on and we went into it thinking we're just being good stewards of the club by doing this and we didn't think we'd you know come across anything. It just so happens. Two hundred yards or hundred and fifty yards up the street literally across the parking from the ice rink. That restarted in a building had become vacant that had previously housed habitat for humanity restore so a store that sold used items for the benefit of habitat for humanity. They had built a new facility. A couple of miles up the road. That building was vacant. It was this little warehouse with little house. Attached to the front wasn't even up for sale but they had moved out so we did a little research saw who the the tax payer was contacted them. Said hey you know we'd like to look at your building potentially interested in it Had a meeting with the guy. And i sort of didn't talk about one of the things we did during the during the intervening years growing on starting the club due to my son with special needs we had actually started up. A special needs carlin program in we have a grant from local foundation. That pays us. You know anywhere between fifteen and twenty grand a year to run a league for individuals with special needs whether it's physical electoral disabilities and it's a passion of mine. It's it's how my son plays the game now in in something that you know we take great pride in when we went and visited in looked at the facility. I'm in sales mode trying to just talk about everything we do. So i talk about. All you had a special needs curling program that we run blah blah turns out. That guy has a third world son with autism and he loved the fact that we were doing things with individuals with special needs so we saw the facility. The warehouse section was awesome. It was perfect for four sheet facility and warm. Weren't quite sure what to do with the house piece of it but we loved it. We set out. We love this but we weren't planning on moving so we really don't have money saved up for a down payment and i'm not sure if we can get a commercial mortgage just because you know we don't have a whole lot of a of a credit rating so the guy actually bent over backwards for us. He said how about seventy five hundred dollars down for this half million dollar and he goes and he says all finance it myself at you know the low end of the commercial interest rate. Well and and i said well. That's great that's wonderful but we're still going to have to raise like three hundred thousand dollars to convert this thing. And i don't know there were able to do that. And and how long is it gonna take. I'm like you know honestly. I don't know it's gonna be a few months so he literally waited from perhaps march until august and turndown cash offers for us to to get the confidence that we can make this happen so we literally fell into an ideal situation by the grace of god any other seller. We would have been sol. But this guy because we did this work with special needs. He wanted to do what he could to help us. He had inherited the building from his dad. He didn't need the money. It wasn't his livelihood and he bent over backwards for us. And it's been awesome very very thankful that we fell into. That was so second time through on top of negotiating the deal and everything had you learned from. The conversion process was the conversion process smoother. Was there anything that kinda came up the second time through that surprise to you i mean there are certainly things we learned there. Were things that we thought we learned but didn't learn. I mean from a design perspective. We learned a lot. So you know the first facility. It was three sheets but the warmer marya wasn't as wide as all three sheets. But we did take this little ten foot section and allow you to that so we sort of built on raised up part of the warehouse so we could look down off the sheets but we just had these like four foot by foot windows one for each sheet and really what we wanted to do was was have you know. A fairly soon was difference between the the ice room in warm so it's wall to wall windows door on each side and then wall to wall windows at you know counter haydn above so you can sit there and there's a little counter so we wanted much more viewable area and not have such separation You know we ended up with a with a much larger warm room You know we. We knew how to do a lot of construction stuff. I would say we right on about ninety percent of that there a few things that we thought we had known in remembered and didn't quite do right this next time around. We used the different. I use the same approach Getting some company to provide the general contracting for free basically let us use their license and some expertise but but we acted as the general contractor ourselves so we were able to take a lot of the learnings over. Yeah there were some things that we encountered that were new. But there were some things like this sprinkling or and or smoke detecting above and below e ceiling that we were able to translate even though we were short on out by architects. Not oh should be fine. You shouldn't have to do that above we you know. We went to the to the to the fire inspectors and had them confirm and and you know it was right. We needed to do it. Above and below architecture and correct So so yeah we. A lot of it was translatable. We took all the ice equipment over other than the installation under the ice which had become a little waterlog. The one thing that we thought we did better on that but we didn't is really sealing up the pond. So in both instances we just put ice matt's down on top consisting concrete floor and build sort of a frame around puts a liners in It's almost guaranteed that you're gonna you're gonna perforate that liner somewhere. Water is amazing finding in escape right. Any tiny little gap it's gonna find So we we leak even even this time around when we melt. you know. there's there's gotta be a better way to do it than than the way we've done it. We did more. we did more. Liners we put danny pd m But still the water water gets out so we wish we could would have done a better job with that. It's it's a herculean task to try to redo that after you've put stuff in to pull up all those matts and everything else so we're gonna wait a few years before we before we try to do that. This time. it's at least pressure treated wood underneath so less likely to rot etc if it if it's a long jumper typically it's pretty short term right it melt during the mouth if floods and You know once in a dries over the summer and then when you when you put the water in your doing it much much more control basis. You don't leak that way and it freezes so it's not causing rider. So what would you say is the number one thing about your club. Were your members that have allowed you to do this. Because like i've been a member of an arena club in oklahoma city in the arena. Club here in richmond. Were we kind of faced similar situations. You guys have where you go. you know. Eighty sixty down to like twenty four for us. It's always seemed like just a complete pipedream. What was it about you guys that just kind of allowed you to push through and get it done and get a dedicated facility. And i've been around other club set. That really haven't been able to do this either. I think it in our experience. I'm not saying it's the only way but in our experience you need one or two people that are given carte blanche to go in do stuff right if you if you have a board with eleven people in it. You're never gonna reach consensus. You're never gonna get anything done. So we had a board of seven people but the board basically said we have confidence. We believe in what you're doing. Go do it needs to be done. Come back to us when you when you need something And it wasn't trying to do it by consensus. It's i wouldn't have been able to do it right. If if i had a board of eleven people. I needed everybody in the board to discuss everything in agree on everything debate everything we would failed so it was aboard the board having confidence enough in myself in in the the people that i pulled in to run this thing to say go and do it come back to us when you need more money and by the way when i needed more money i went back with a plan on how to get it to so the boy was pretty easy from aboard I was also willing to take some of the risk right. So i signed up personally for the financial guarantee on the lease or the first for the first facility because i- confidence that that we were gonna make the successful if we were if we were five grand short in a year i would pulled it out of my pocket to pay it just to make sure i didn't get hit with the financial liability of the club going under you and i had i had gone to some other members gotten something in writing from them not legally binding but something in writing them that says they would give a thousand dollars if the club needed it. You know because we weren't able to meet our obligations to keep the you just it. It takes us in. You need to give get somebody that knows how to manage. Projects knows how to manage large-scale projects. And you just need to get out of their way short of that. You're gonna have analysis paralysis in. You'll be talking about a dedicated facility. Fifteen years down the road. So how's the business model changed for you guys from were arena club to now. What's the what's the difference in the in the business model now You know it's a lot more arena club. You're you're just trying to cover your your eyes time. Phaser your your your fees for for running the league's and generally what we had partnered with our with our facility such that we didn't really get money from learn to girls but we didn't have to pay for ice time for to curl so they gave us the ice time for lunch. Curls they got the money from it if there were only ten people there you know. The club wasn't losing money The club got the long term benefit. Right if those people once they became members so it was the one bonds field. We ran which typically. We ran slightly at a loss. Because the food and beverage was expensive. And the league's running the league's get into the dedicated facility you've got you know corporate sponsorships you've got corporate advance. You've got leagues a lot. More leagues you've got learned curls generating revenue from that. You've also got utility costs worrying about how much the electric is this month. In things of that nature But i would say we went from league vs league membership fees being ninety percent of our revenue to probably fifty percent of our revenue and were able to get grants. Were able to get you know sponsorships and these private events that generate elite probably roughly half the revenue in. What's the reaction been from the community there in fort wayne now that you're establish civility has has new curler growth kind of met your expectations. Yeah i mean you always want more. But you know we're we're up pre covid. We were up at one hundred hundred ten active curlers with plenty of opportunity for for growth. You know still getting the word out so most of the community's still says curling facility in town even though ronnie drag even though you know we've been on tv quite a bit But yeah i mean we. We were very happy and have continued to be happy with growth up until the time covert hit and then like every club right. It's it's it's decimating so we're hopeful that that will rebound this this season in. So what are your ambitions. Once the covid nineteen restrictions in are there any programs that maybe you've been delaying that you're now chomping at the bit to implement while we certainly certainly Excited to get special needs curling program back in running because that's that's fifteen to twenty grand in revenue from that alone and van And then our junior program. We had a really just started to get a junior program off the ground. We had a couple of young youngsters that move down from fairbanks and Were pretty strong curlers for their age of seventy nine or whatever they are and then you know we've had some new kids come in and then cova head in we weren't running it during covid so we're excited to get the junior program backup going excited to get special needs backup and going and we're hoping to get back to where we were before because where we were before from a financial standpoint in the first year wasn't great but there were some operational funds that were used to to finish up the build out. You know if we if we're back to that same type of year without the early shutdown without the the the build out costs we're gonna be a really good place financial menu. We've talked about all the spills that you ran when you're when you were in arena club. Can you tell us about the bonds feels you have now tell us why curler should put fort wayne on their calendar. Yeah so so. We run for four spills. a year. typically Our first one is sort of the the continuation of the fort wayne somersville. We've moved a little bit later. We've moved it to around the autumnal equinoxes so it's now called the fort wayne end of somersville and that's very early season spiel so september twentieth or so before many clubs have had dedicated ice. So it's a it's a great early opportunity for to to get out on the ice. Unfortunately it's already sold out this year. It sold out in in forty-eight hours but but it's it's a great spiel and a great chance to get on the ice early in the season after that we in november we would typically run. We had been running a cash field but had challenges really filling that so we've converted that to a five and So we're looking at a five and under event in in november so us wc a and others. You know run five and unders in the january february timeframe so this is a bit of an earlier season five hundred and then we run a fourteen summits to the open in march typically the first weekend or second weekend of march. Another nice spill. Obviously it's amongst the other bond yields in the area but still quality is great facility hotel right across the street so you never even have to drive brew pubs within walking distance as well so lots of stuff there. And we've got a huge yard so we do a lot of outdoor boom stacking now etc and last year we do is a is a women's spiel. That sometimes is is coincident with a vera bradley sales. If you guys are familiar with viewer bradley bags and things of that nature which individuals of the female persuasion. A lot of them like that stuff. They have a big outlet sale. And we've run that event that same weekend in got tickets to to that so they can command they. Can they can curl in making go shop and again at cetera. We've we've had challenges with that spiel for for various reasons right. We didn't run run year because of because of construction because we were shutting facility moving to the new and then last year we didn't run into the covid so really want to get that one back on a map. It says it will be. I don't think we've sent the check yet. But it will be a us wc a tour event so we're circuit event call a circuit. So there's points that you can earn by participating that event but You know it's There's lots of great spills out there. We think we run a great spiel as well But i'd say the one that has the most interesting is certainly the end of feel because it's before most clubs are are up and running. It craig wants to reach out to you or the club or if they have questions about pursuing their own dedicated facility how to how can they find you and how can they find for wing curling club. Ep45: Rings Around the World 2020
"And hey everybody welcome back to rucks across the pond. It's a curling. podcast coming to you from Richmond. Virginia my name is Ryan McGee and joining me as always our professor repeal Jonathan Handcraft Jonathan. How are you tonight a good and tired? It's late is late in England not that right but latest. It's not a school night for you. Though is it I do not have a morning class. Which is why I agreed to record this but I do? I think it's very weird. There's a very good university schedule here. So you basically do all your class up till Christmas than you come back and you have this weird review a week which I understand that we do two weeks of exams and it's the first week of classes and so this week kind of sucks because I am both marking exams and launching new classes which are like the two busiest parts of the term. So anyway that's my grumble amble yes. We are recording this on a Wednesday night. It's probably GONNA go up on a Monday So it is five forty forty five here in Virginia and it's what ten forty five there then. Forty five fantastic. That's great. I'm probably going to get to curl soon. So that's cool where he planned Well Richmond's Our League Virginia Curling Club of Virginia's League is going to start art march. Fifth but before that It looks like we're GonNa have a learned to carol. I think in mid February and then were go kind of shake the rust off. We're going to go down to triangle curling club in Durham in curl awesome. Dedicated is just a down in back on the twenty ninth of February. Just go down there. Play two games and drive right back to Richmond so that will finally be back on the ice for the first time First Time in months wants definitely first time since since the kid was born. Are you gonNA do arena nats this year. No so one one. It's in Wyoming this year. So that's issue number one issue number two is they do arena nats. The first week of May and my son's birthday is may second and I that I'm one one hundred percent not going to be able to to skip his first birthday to go to Wyoming to curl really really until until they move arena nationals off of that first week of May. I'm not sure when they'll be able to do is they. Always have it right now or sweets been for a few years now is like that first week of May get knocked out before the summer comes so it's not summer curling. Yeah exactly I know. We went a couple of times when it was in June which was fine but They've they've kind of moved into that the first week of May the last few years. So that's probably GonNa keep me from doing it anytime soon. And then yeah going to Wyoming probably not probably not something. I'm going to be able to cheer. Yeah I mean it's I mean it's a cool spot. It's wanting things one of the few states that have been to so. Yes same here if I was in an arena club in the US. It actually be appealing for me to play in that event if it worked but probably reason I haven't been they're not the easiest state to get to either the and that's the one thing that I'm kind of interested about and we'll touch on it more when we get the two are big arena nationals. Show that will do before the tournament is where they're having it in. I think it's in northeast Wyoming thing. It's really difficult to get there like. There's two flights a day to that. Regional Air to the regional airport in both of them are Both of them are our regional small regional aircraft so really the only way to get there is to fly to Denver in drive like six hours. I think to get there something like that. I'm I'm going off of memory so that that could be wrong but it's GonNa be difficult for some people to get their. Yeah I'm curious well. Well how how level affect the entries and all that stuff but moving around so yeah they send out the invites in then they usually finalize teams Accept the invitation. Um they usually give them like a month or so to accept the invitation so I imagine here in about a month. They'll announce the final The final lineup of teams. But yeah. That'll be interesting to see as as teams figure out how to get out there But that'll be that'll be in May the next US championship that that we'll talk about is US nationals. And we kinda started into preview that started to preview that last week or get last week with our last show with Joe calibrates of t s in and they will be there in Washington. That's one of the championships. We're GONNA talk about today. We're kind of we're kind of redoing or Doing a second annual championships campionships Featured shows actually one of our more popular shows last year so we brought it back. We're GONNA talk about some National Championships. That are going on here. In the middle of what is traditionally played down season I know a lot of the provincial play. Downs are going on in Canada. We've already had a few SCOTTIES bursts in a couple of briar births. crowned already And those have been interesting to watch a lot more of them available on Web web-streaming this year As able to watch probably the most probably the most interesting one that I watched with the semi-final where your Buddy Mike -fornia got knocked doubt in the semi-final At the Quebec tankard because that was back and forth game. high-scoring rocks in play in the tenth end was was insane With a bunch of rocks up in front of the House and the last three rocks Four did not have hammered but the last three rocks The loud blast to buy a Aleksandar who he was playing in. Mike's last rock hall just amazing shot so that that was probably the best game that I've watched So far Sketch which has done a good job showing all of their games as well. I know northern Ontario has web streams for there's Ontario has a pretty high quality broadcast for there's It's been really fun to see. How much is available eligible online now? Yeah I don't know for have it for the English but if they do Ryan can tweet it out I I will I will It should be it should be available. It's at dumfries because they they show a lot of their stuff. We'll only be my mrs this is are we show like a shot. I make if at least one like an open knows it or something all right. Yeah if you if you if you have a good peel I'll I'll tweet that out to like. Let's put this weird pressure on me with peels now illustration Jerez. I missed my first. Pr No are jammed. It and ours is like Massena myself. You can't Miss Peels professor of May all the rest of my peel kind of I never thought about that as either my shot or not my shot. Let's 'cause usually you're usually usually you're skipping usually. You're not playing second. No Yeah Yeah. So that's true. So appealing is the second shot so yeah I feel like I feel more pressure wrote that than actually winning the Games now to be honest so so what is more more important to you because you in addition to all the championships that will go kind of in depth here in just a second. You do have your championship your The championship for for England coming up the second weekend of February. What is more important to you? Winning England or making one hundred percent of your appeals McKee repeals that matter so yeah I think winning England versus making a hundred percent of my peels. It's not going to be. I don't know what was the story about Who Was it Furby or something thing? There's some guy in Furby team who have really good shooting percentage one briard for you. Call the shop at different thing the score would do you know this story or not. What if they told it on one of the broadcast once it was yet whoever that yeah it was furby he was the skip and kind of like someone was going back and forth with him on? How a shot should be called me said remember I control your percentage in? He would like tell the guy to tell to play one shot but then with his broom would say you know. I want it here and poet in point Somewhere else so the score would think that the shot shot was supposed to be something completely different and so the guy would score zero even though he threw the shot that furby actually wanted. Yeah so you know maybe I should chase shooting percentage absolutely just make the heart and all that matters all that matters man is making on thirteen. RT's don't you have a perfect score. He had no MRS that team that you just throw them all through on purpose. You have a you're shooting percentages knowl- know- DNP Soak Oke with other playdowns going on Russell we're GONNA talk about some championships. There are some major world birds that are going to be decided here the second week in February and we we did this last year. There's there's one particular weekend It's usually the second week in February. Where four pretty Maino not counting Canada? I would say like these might be the four most interesting national championships that get played played in. That's the US. Scotland Japan and Switzerland. Mike completely off base in saying that Yeah I think he's I will say yes. I'm off base off as on the four biggest wines. One disappointment is Japan. Men's isn't going to be a world all the world qualifying team now which is to accent a lot of teams playing in it but That's the state we're in with world curling these. Yeah they expanded expanded the field for worlds and it seems like it's even harder to qualify it for for it now if that if that makes any since it all. Wow I mean there's some even it's just the pace. That countries are up. National programmes is distancing and and every every time I blank thinks like some country. Who's just maybe two? Three years ago was not anything. You consider a competitive curling team. That'd be kind of like bouncing between the B. and the C.. All of a sudden they've got like some of the coach flown in from Canada and spending lots of money and teen is falling all over the place in I countries shooting up the standings. So you know Turkey. I think the latest one with Tony Mack previous guests the show shooting over there so they can kind of just missed out this room inside But you know I. I think it won't be long before we have a Turkish team up applying in the in the world other men's or women's degree in Turkey's been in although they've been in The A pool rule. They haven't been at a world. Is that right. I think I can't recall them being the world search for the last few years they've been. I'm kind of appalled. A solid playoff lock at a junior bees and kind of going up and down the kind of been one of those teams bounces back and forth and so when that generation of players mostly aging out now so and playing in the adult version. So that's kind of the kind of team you look for or that kind of emerges a a new worlds threat so that you know or like you out the door up another one's a little bit more established but that's a country again you go. Oh back five. Six years not anyone's radar but they're now kind of a perennial worlds team so in so these are these are countries where the national team Amos kind of handpicked right. There isn't necessarily a play down process. I don't know about Turkey. Netherlands wins is. I guess it's Netherlands is really small. It's even smaller than English curling. It's just one three shearer and I I don't know the politics of it all everywhere. Everywhere I've gone has been curling politics since a little different but I pretty much know it's is yapping his coach Sharon it's Carlisle. It's kind of like Cruz. Basically played together for years now so I don't know if it's hand picked her just as the team that's so they are the only ranked team in the Netherlands. So there's not really another team. That is a legitimate claim. I guess but But not a big national championship like the like the countries countries were about to talk about. No no so where where do we WANNA start. We've got the US. Scotland Japan in Switzerland Roland. Is there one you want to start with. Yes because the TAB is open okay all right so looking looking at the sheet here Yellow start with start with the US. US nationals. Are February eighth through fifteenth. They're being played just outside of Spokane Washington in Cini which is where eastern Washington University is not being played at I guess a new REC center that they built at e w view and it looks really nice. It looks like they have a pretty sweet bar So that's if you're in Washington state Or if you're near If you're near the police Might might think about heading out there. That looks like a pretty sweet. Set up that they're going to have for this events USA USA curling. We we we saw kind of you know. It wasn't a dramatic shift but we've seen a little bit of shift this year On the women's inside we saw a few players kind of take a step back who were in the high performance program they've been replaced placed by some younger players And you saw kind of the combination. You saw Corey. Christiansen get moved from having her own team to getting moved to to Jamison since Team and then the third high performance team was is now a group of players that are just outside of junior so they did not qualify fi that his team bear. They did not qualify for this year's national so the only two. I'm sorry there's three high performance teams that are GONNA be at this year's nationals Team Jamie Sinclair. That is your three time defending champion What is team roth without Nina? Roth skipped by Tabitha Peterson and then the other high performance team is your newly crowned junior champion Laney Strauss straus their junior team. But they're high performance. They do not get to participate at World Juniors because the US failed to qualify at world junior junior bs so they're consolation prizes. They do get a slot at U S nationals some other Camila faces That are going to be here. CASSIE potter she's back. We kind of talked about that With Joe in our last show She's been into an Olympics. She won this event in two thousand. Five I think she was last in this in two thousand seventeen when she won bronze She's kind of back. She was disappoints qualifier. So she did not have to go to the challenge. Round in order to qualify for this event. Same with Kim Rhyme. Her team was able to earn. Enough points is on tour that they got to skip the qualification the Challenger event in go straight to nationals Youth kind of got served at that a challenger event you had to junior teams who are not a part of the high performance program who met in the qualifier and that was Christine Mc Macon which I believe the Sandra Megan's daughter and aerial traxler from Alaska they met in the qualifier Christine making one that game in an aerial traxler turned around and won the big qualifier so two junior teams outside of the high performance program. Qualifying out of the challenge around pretty impressive. So you have a bunch bunch of youth at this event. I think that's really interesting Jonathan. Yeah I mean I think it's the changing the guard in the women's game. They mentioned in my area he had hit part of blog posts was like why are young people so good these days in curling. I mean I think because it's the quality of coaching right that Especially in the USA. I think we if one of the kind of plusses of the high performance program the last decade is it actually has cascaded down a lot of the the knowledge and you can just see them proven technical side of the game the tactical side of the game of Allah juniors coming up the ranks. Now so there's a lot more depth breath at the younger end. It actually looks really different. From what the women's championship looked bike. even five I four five years ago I'd say yet and then one last team that we did not mention team working which is Rachel work in plank fourth worth it used to be team potable and now import oil is at is at Leeds. Still on still part of this team and Throwing lead rocks. But you have racial workin throwing fourth rox. Yes I believe. She's in the House too because they they referred to this team as team working But they've had some lineup changes same thing with teams Strauss. That team was team Dutt at the beginning of the year And they did. They had a switch. There were now Laney Strauss is throwing fourth rocks and calling the game. It is it we we've we we've kept thinking because the women's side at US nationals has been kind of top heavy for a while and we kind of thought that that was starting to change. Because you've had you've had players go through the high performance program or go through the high performance junior program in the age out in kind of form their own teams but is it. Is it fair to say that it's still pretty Pretty Top Pity here with team Peterson in team sinclair as the two favorites posting. I wouldn't be surprised as their sinclair one. But it feels like this year Peterson's Basang been on such run Makino qualifying and slams winning the international channel speed walls. It's it's it's there's kind clear separation between a first and second place team our this willing twenty anyplace boss between them in the Order of Merit Sinclair's had a slightly kind of slower year. I'd say Sorry I kind of I. Kind of Finger Peterson. Persson this year. I think obviously clearly the next choice but then after that. I think it's pretty good for your next year. It's like Ryan Potter and Strauss Are Not that far. Apart in the rankings I personally think cassie potter kind of still in in kind of major championship events. I do think that Get served in terms of being in terms of qualified. But I think when you get down to those playoff games must win games. That's where the veteran experience really matters. So I think to moon team Potter's the most dangerous team In this competition for sure and I think that the fascinating thing to me me is even without Nina. Roth like how Tabitha Peterson has. Kind of embraced Being the skip of this team in the success assessed that they've had in you contrast that with how Jamie Sinclair's team has performed on tour this year. They've only qualified qualified at two of their nine spills that they've played in team sinclair but they've won this event three straight times in fact the last two years they have one loss in it. Was Stephanie Cynical team. Who isn't even in the field? So it's those kind of those. Those two things really clash rush for me so if we wind up seeing it would not surprise me to see. I imagine we will see some clear Peterson in that final. And I'm really. I'm not sure what I think wins out. You know the the team. That's been on fire on tour and has gone to slams in on arena. Ice On grand. Dan Slam is have ruled off. Wins Against Hasek. Carry Tyrian Zony Anderson Jennifer Jones Tracy flurry versus the team. That you know they're four may not be up to snuff but they've still been amazing on. US nationals is into me EH. That would be phenomenal to see those two things go against each other in a final between Sinclair's team in team Peterson. Yeah they've so Pearson. This team has beaten every team in the top five. Yes that's that's just a crazy on Grand Slam US Grand Nice. That's that's needed separation. Not at not at some club where the ice was Fudgy and they figured out the other. The ice is in the other team. Didn't this was arena ice Grand Slam ice We all the best teams in the world at the events he yeah I think think again. It's kind of like the one thing wealthy one thing but the the advantage that you might give to Sinclair's that the US nationals nationals. And again that would thing right of I think championships or a different creature than than slams the slush more pressure. I showed her You get one chance to do it. A year is not like the slams. I think basically are just very elite tournaments third. There's not the same pressure to win. You know when slam over another but everyone builds their season for these moments and that pressure can do a funny thing and so the one really big advantage I think sinclair has. She's done the last three years. And so has that confidence. But I'd say kind of in terms of form still think Peterson's got the edge. Yeah Yeah in the. I'm just going to be. I'M GONNA be fascinated to see what happens when those to play both in the round robin and possibly in In the championship championship. The men side things kind of interesting this year because John Shuster's team they've won three of the last five live there last time that they've gone to world's they've made the playoffs they're not having a great year You contrast that with what cory dropped instant has done this year where they've been kind of been the team. That's kind of been the up and coming team. In fact they won the tour challenge tier two events on Grand Slam ice Probably the biggest results that we've seen out of any. US team all season. Men's or women's In that kind of broke a streak of several consecutive second-place finishes so they really broke through there by by winning that tournament In they won again then later this year at Curl Musabe and the important thing about that win was it was their first win against rich ruining all year. So we're going into that going into that game rich ruined. His team was four. No against Dropkin in accordance beats him in the final at Chroma Sabi and that was the last time they played so you team dropkin has gotten to things off their back. They've they've won. They've they've finally one in event and they finally rich ruined in this year so they have to have so much confidence coming into this tournament. going up against team ruining team Schuster shuster who have represented the US. At I believe the last four Between the two teams represented the US at the last four worlds olds. Is it time for a changing of the guard or do you think team Dropkin is GonNa have to wait another year. The only as of a one off in the one bit of suspicion I put those stats are looking at the events. Schuster played in. I would say that they're they're still still a higher quality right. They played tier one two or challenge supposed to cheer to wanted to grant master's a second. We we song I I wonder if one possible explanation is that Schuster kind of still riding on the gold medal can get invites to kind of the a V slams and basically the top class non slam events slammed minus at say and then idea. Es slightly higher harder field and kind of kind of almost innocent since the reverse of Makina fact kind of a few or McLeod who is a fact from the last season right where it was like. Nicaragua's could you read while in the beasts the events but every time it got to the slams they just get annihilated. I'm wondering if that might be part of the explanation for Schuster eastern not getting as many points because they're playing harder events I mean soon dropkin getting into a slam putting on a good show. There was great lays it was winning the tier two that qualified them for that event whereas Schuster mostly qualified on previous year. Points so Sometimes it's kind of a classic thing in curling right You Have A. I think actually the team that was that had a Europe it like that as an Ontario Scott McDonnell the kind of lost. You had that dream run you kind of income partly the fact. You're the brier to getting invites to all the top tier events and at that level. They struggled a bit. They've kind of fallen about The back to the rest of the field so wondering if that's one possible explanation for the the different results here this year as opposed to just kind of drop off in form which means that. Maybe she serves a bit more dangerous. Yes then he will just put going Australian Order of Merit points. Well yeah I mean just off if you look at the totality Talapity of what. These teams are Schuster's team has to be the favourite needs. Can you go back to what we talked about. Jamie Sinclair like kind of what. What he does is when this event? Since you're mentioning rich I was kind of doing Curling's on surfing as one does did a deep dive into his season and discover that he's had his ruin funny rivalry with yeah indoor team. I mean they've they've played five six times this year. But it's like all over the water. said they play each other in China China. Some Event Europol somewhere in Canada down in the US. So kind of kind of had this forty rivalry on your and says God Beck and actually pretty pretty evenly matched in terms of results. So I'm kind of polling for a ruling to win descend caps already qualified so I've like the final resolution at the world in terms of the ruin in verses Van Door P- for this year. They actually go to hold the record is actually. They're actually pretty evenly matched like the an interesting game cum world times can get out of Out of the USA. Honestly I don't know who out of these I mean. I assume it's going to be one of these three teams. I have no idea who I think is is GonNa win this year. I'd have to default to Schuster but because because I just I think we're about a year away from any kind of changing of the guard of team. dropkin breaking through Here's a question for you though Jonathan Jonathan if if Schuster's team does not win this championship or even if they do win it and they go to world and have a disappointing appointing worlds. Do you think we might see any lineup shuffling or any kind of a change on that team. Aw I don't think so. I mean who who who you think who. This walkout live new idea but when when I watched this team team and I know I watched them very much as an amateur I don't know just something seems off. Just not add ED. Something seems just not the same as what I've seen out of teams Schuster before the Olympics during the Olympics or even last year. I don't don't know just something. Seems something different. I have no. I can't even say what did I don't even know what it is. I don't think it's a I don't think it's the team dynamics issue but yeah they just they just seem a little off like even when I was watching them when they were in Phoenix. That just seemed a little off. I don't know yeah I think the one difference. I think is while prizes kind of every bit. The shooter that the Thai tires and was I think tiger. There's a little bit better at Kinda keeping Matt Hamilton. Calm and keeping Schuster and a good head space. I think I think implies a bit more introverted. Kinda smile observation whereas You Know Tyler George Carlin kind of had a knack for kind of knowing when to crack a joke when to calm someone down and went to went to kind of keep everyone on the same page get serious kind of in that that classic vice role implies is just a bit quieter. He's just a bit more of an introvert. So that might vice talking you. The team dynamic a bit But the other explanation may just be burnt out right. I think I don't think they break up simply employees. AP for Olympic Champs to break up just because there's so much money and Shuster it's like it's that whole team they're basically like Schuster and saying that Hamilton would a split i. I don't know if the team could Katina make the kind of sponsorship money they're making. It's the different kind of economy right. So is there Y- champion teams kind of loose. Go through the next quad with before making a change. If not even longer right so I would say those. They're in it through this quad. I do wonder what happens at at the end of the quad. Like I. I do think it's interesting question about you've been to waltz. Allot you've got your gold Nardo Everything's coming up in your personal life kind of with your cruel with your family moving. Maybe you're just Kinda like well I've done all there is to do in this health step back or is it. The Arbor is kind of first American gold medals chance in the kind of a different situation where they actually can just kind of keep curling at a high level full refund into their forties. So more money would be wonder understanding through this quad. And then Kinda take a look in two years time to see what's going on. I think I think Schuster wants to be the first I. US team to win a tier. One Grand Slam. Yeah so I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon soon. But I don't I don't know something just as an amateur who is watch. That team play on television a lot. They just seems something seems different. I don't even know if you're off is the right word to use. Something seems different and yeah I don't know they could That could come out and go undefeated in roll through this rule through this whole field and make in other words playoffs in a well forget everything I just said right. Yeah I I do think there's two other dangerous teams in this field too so so Tauber is always dangerous. I think he's Kinda he's always wise kind of moving dangerous to wound but certainly danger dangerous enough to Make playoff so maybe block. One of the top teams make a playoff spot and beanie certainly winning a semifinal on kind of making a mess of the bracket so that's a dangerous interest team and then I didn't even know him to Brown. was that way for forever. We'll talk does that. And then the the most interesting thing I think is this. I'm going to mangle his name. Dominic Mayor Steven Dropkin team right. That you kind of tipped off as they set of Arkansas and kind of bringing a kind of former elite player here from Switzerland. That's kind of an interesting angle right so You don't aren't as high up in the Order of Merit points but certainly have the veterans skip. Who who may be able to do some damage to yeah and then The other teams in the field. Scott done him he was appointed qualifier. Did Not have go to the Challenger round Jed Brundage back in the championship playing with Evan Working and we'll note Kevin written our their lead and The only arena curler. I believe in the field. He skipped the Sioux Falls Curling Club entry into arena nationals last year so always good to seeing arena curler at US nationals Steven Burke leads team is in and they were the alternate team. Basically I think the deal was if luke violets team 'cause they they were one of the C. qualifiers challenge around. I think the deal was if they won the US the US junior nationals. In there for we're going to worlds that alternate team would get in and I think that's. That's what happened here. Is You have Stephen Berkeley going back to nationals. Also Shea. Senate is in our high-performance junior team. They actually did not. They were not the runner up at Juniors Team Touma was the runner up. And that's that's team. I always think is interesting. Just because The the skip of team tomb of wears a richmond flying squirrels hat in his curling zone. Photo and I think it's hilarious. said that the team. I always root for whenever I'm scoreboard. Watching a chasing the Senate is there as a high-performance junior team and KYLE CACA is going to be there and as we talked about with Joe Calabria's on the last show their lead J. P. Munich. He's the he's the kid who throws with his in his mouth. So so that'll be fun to watch too Jonathan. We will go over to your neck of the woods next and the Scottish nationals else They have not announced the teams that are GONNA be participating Scottish nationals yet. But we do have A. We have a pretty good idea of. Who's going to be there right? Hey Hey everybody it's Ryan eight right after we recorded. This Scotland did announce their teams list for their championship of eight teams on each side. Single Round Robin Top. Three teams making a page playoff on the men's side. You have Russe Mount Ross Paterson Ross. White Cameron McVey Cameron Bryce Luke Carson Glenn Your head and breathe young on the women's side. Eve Muirhead Sophie Jackson. Rebecca Morrison with Maggie. Wilkinson Beth farmer Moore. Rachel Decors Haley. Duff we Davey and Susan Heasley so those are that's information that we have on these Scottish Championship. campionships enjoy the rest of the show. On the men's I think is pretty clear. The room deep field. Right what are they got. They got five teams. The top thirty five and get the lowest ranked team is won't pick team from two thousand eighteen. Yeah exactly so so hard. Rink is thirty fifth this year. I think probably the two names that if you're not falling Scottish curling all that closely You may not know as well as Ross white who's been at the last few wall juniors and actually gave up the last year of eligibility to to form a competitive team. Now I think kind of similar situation Tyler Attorney Tardy where they wanted to get a jump on the Olympic qualifying who played them this year and it made short work of four. So but that's ashamed I back then I will say are skip was like. WHO's this Ross? White team from Scotland. We were all like. Oh they're really good afterwards. Rob was like Oh yeah. I guess they're really good and wagner slamming if they haven't already qualified for a slam yet they'll be they'll be there soon. If not by the end of the season the early next the thing that was disappointing was it. Junior's last year in two thousand nineteen Ross. White actually lost in the semi-final Lil which one would have set up a rematch from the twenty eighteen gold medal game between him and Tardy and twenty eighteen gold medal game. That tardy one in Scotland was Was just an insane game that I remember into an extra end and tardy wound up drawing a drawing to win In an extra end I think So it was just pointing to see and yet same thing Gives up last year of eligibility and is now on the men's circuit. I I think I think he will look back at that game Those games kind of international rivalry every on par with Johnny Mo.. and Dave Murdoch. While I think I think I think both those teams both skips for sure both teams are really good. Kind of have the potential to be dominant for the next ten to fifteen years In World Curling Tardy retain them a little bit more while the punch through. I did let the elite Canadian ranks but Both have that potential to be kind of on the scene for a long period of time. So you're saying like the twenty twenty-five five worlds we'll see tardy white dueling maybe use some of the some time in this decade is a potential matchup. I'd say Probably the one that people may not the least but it's Cami braces team. who was kind of his? He's kind of been the bubble team for the performance squad. He was in the squad to ago out of it last season basketball season because he was playing in Sweden last year. How and your other kind of run into an inst- kind of insurance? Go play wherever you know some some pro players though dislikes. They're only gonNA play pro staff. I think can mean it's like we're we're playing in the high. Yes which is a very. There's no order of mayor points for the HAG issue win when Ryan. Do you think i. I'm guessing you win. A haggis woman. Little bottle of famous grabs lipsky Celsius in the year and into the locker and caring walks and wonder who's playing against inspiring against that so I mean I think he he's a really good shotmaker and your thing is he's got he's got a pretty good vision vision. That depends I played with them and also watch curling with them. He's he's one of those guys who sees angles kind of almost instinctively. So he's he's kind of interesting player input on he's been onto our not. Hasn't quite had this season at Ross. White Has bestows client climbed up the thirty first in the world. it to the quarterfinals in that tier here to challenge And had a kind of a couple of quality wins to As well certain if they've done really well on the European tour and had a good run in Canada. So that's I I don't think they'll win but I personally think it's got a little sought to his first year out what you know finished third out of three teams in the European qualifier so th Scottish coverings moving at the moment like any of those five teams could come out of it. Any of those top five teams in the thirty five in the top top those five teams top-35 could come out of this out of this event. Does it seemed like Ross. White got some of the funding that used to go to muirhead steam because Moore heads team only made it to Canada for two spiel and I think it was in back tobacco weeks but other other than that has not left Europe. I don't know technically go check. I am I think I'm not sure I'd have to dig up the last question. They could answer with more research if we had better research budget department. Admit off my my mole's nest in British curling kind of bothered to ask them by text I didn't quite know I run. Questioned is basically what. I'm not sure. Is this the discipline of funding for three teams. That are kind of the call podium and they have a couple of slots what's called podium potential and autos teams are kind of in the podium program but how will bounce around between podium and podium potential largely depends depends upon results. And I think it's the only made at the start of the season so could could speak with very light. Playing spills somewhere else grew tired of going to Canada. Tim Hortons Dono. I can't imagine that it's kind of hard to defend after. Let's talk first first dating Alice. We kind of Canada and I'm really excited like let's go teams donut. She is like first of all I. coffey is terrible and second of all is donuts nothing compared to a crispy cream and that was like a moment of crisis relationship concise but then after a few years I'd emit that Tim Horton's coffee is not that great and and so we'll probably never get sponsored by Tim Hortons but I know you've you have ruined this for me because I really. I order their coffee in bulk. Yes and that's what I drink. Oh Wow so yeah like a a partisan I mean I drank a lot of timmy's. He's an Undergrad. I will say like your wife or your partner. Something you reich is bad it just kind of support you couldn't add. It could be giving favorite spider and I was like and then you just can't ever see it the same way again. You've never had that happen yet. No probably probably probably was curling in doing this. Bad chanced chanced so anyway. Sorry I probably. They're probably GONNA revoke my Canadian passport now for this but they should have already Probably for other reasons but yeah I yeah so like you said Bruce Mallett who is fourth in order of Merit which you order of Merit. But he's fourth in order of Merit has been the last two worlds finished third out of three at the qualifier to represent Scotland at at euros this year. Ross Patterson in one In finished third at Euros Put what should we expect out of this to be expect mallet to to win again or demolition Derby militia. While it's GonNa be this is going to be. This is the Scottish equivalent of the ninety. Three brier Araya where the field. So Jesus you put some crazy tiebreaker situation. I'm calling it now would even know what format they're using it. Oh Oh I think it's like a round robin with A semi final and final usually. There's like eight or nine teams in this. They just they haven't posted all of the teams are in yet. Usually McDonald plays in this thing anyway. Right and even though he doesn't play offs feels just Kinda shows goes up in. Beat some young at this offense. Yeah it's kind of I kind of have a special place in my heart for kind of like these veterans who just like the cassie see. Potter's McDonald's Tabor. Just like all right for one or two. It's time for show up beat up somebody. Young young have some fun ruined one of the favorite teams weeks. There's something something sweet about that. I think So it'll be a bit of that I I didn't quite know Think with interesting on the women's move to try to expand the number of kind of high performance teams and definitely an inside kind of five being at least getting some kind of fairly deep level of funding on woman. Sired still a pretty big gap although although be both embarrassed ourselves last year when we basically said well he was always to win. She lost to Sophie Jackson Four Times. It's stop that is curling. You can never count anyone out I'm not sure she never. I never heard in blamed the hip you always wonder if injury or the recovered from that injury factor there whilst your but she certainly has seen battle this year the Senate pins so seconded Europeans Qualified at a slam. I vill I I I event of the year goes out and wins at Oakville one recently at the Perth Masters. I mean I think she's back. Yeah I'd say she's back. I think the third team Rebecca Morrison's potentially the one to watch. She's not too far behind Sophie Jackson. The Order of Merit actually has a slight winning advantage at two one against her. This season. the good a chance that the Morrison rink could kind of if not this year very soon kind of become the second second best Women's team in in Scotland and it is good to have actually three teams ranked this highly because that that wasn't even the case last year. So there's there's definitely also more growth you're on the women's side in those really the only three teams that I imagine that I have a good feeling. We're going to be there. I have no idea how many women's teams are going to be there but I can't imagine that any team that we haven't mentioned here Winds up winning either of these from. Yeah I yeah. I think they do tend to populate the field with junior teams especially once the this other juniors last Weekend wrap up in the Craig team won The man's remember who I think Beth farmer won the women's but for the woman's 'cause they're in get out of the pool That championship chipped go anywhere so it was a good chance. They'll be you know to junior teams entered as well Playoff teams from that so So that events it's going to be February eighth through fifteenth in Perth Scotland. Where what's where is Perth Scotland? uh-huh where you drive up Godown Sterling you turn right thank closer the border is it up nor was basically north of business bout of the borders dumfries and all that stuff. WHO's Lockerbie Stein? Rar has kind of along the border. Broder Kurland the other end Then you've got kind of the urban strip in in Scotland which is Glasgow to Edinburgh is kind of like a highway that connects them and then inbetween wellness stirring which is is will. The National Training Center is and a lot of national monuments there to Scottish battles where they beat the English. So it's kind of a nice patriotic. Hr Part of Scotland and impress a little bit further up from there so cool. Yeah and I'm pretty happy with if that with with that arena sponsorship. That's pretty good. Scotus satis geography milk or any sense at all Surf Aberdeen North of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Okay Carnegie Little Bit West of Dundee Okay Okay Andrews sort of is it known for anything the super pretty good. Its own for balls as you seen this video. That went viral of this bowls. The bowls is basically carpet bowling. I did see that that was at Perth. Yeah he goes. Oh yeah the number one. First Time I went to the rink. God this is with a mere Ed's very excited to be Mike one of the big Scottish curling ranks and I got there and it became immediately obvious that curling as like a fourth rate tenant in his facility in the balls else is the moon. Thanks Timmy cameras and some Weird Ass Bowl stadium. And it's very big there what What with Jonathan is referring during two is? There was a video that went viral last week. This guy making this insane in basically lawn bowling shots It's not not botchy lawn bowling. where the all based carpet carpet bowling were the rolling? Yeah the ball curled in between into for lack of better word guards in went right up against the whatever you know what they call the smaller ball in jacked or something in In lawn bowling to SCO to sit two points yet. I'm odds are if you're on twitter at all you you probably saw it. Yeah it's the way he hooked it around. And then it's almost like Sandra strong but kind of basically hooking it all away around to the tee line then taking taking a ninety return attuned to stones over the Pan because ballsy can move the pin move the pin the exact right distance so he sitting two and cutting the other other guy out so it was awesome. I charter did not know that was in Perth. I don't know that exemption was in Perth. But it doer center. There has a big bowl thing. I'm sure I'll get a text message from one of our Scottish sources correcting me about I my geography and second understanding understanding of balls but anyway Let's go to Switzerland. Yeah all right back to the Alps the Swiss championships. This year is highly populated with teams. That have gone to a lot of tour events and for the most part are either a junior team or are in the top one hundred in order of Merit How does this work in Switzerland? Or they're a bunch of teams that received funding. Or is this all on your own house. It kind of. How does their program to work? I think it's on your own. I don't I didn't really get much detail. We play them. Martin Rio says team at the mix world mixed in kind of ask them did about how mixed work and there was. It's like just he said well sixteen teams qualify for the national and then it's a tournament so there is certainly isn't funding. I imagine the elite teams get funding. But I think it's more on the Canadian model where the funding's allocated based on performance on tour and kind of at the at the events and they've they've got a kind of slightly different format words around Robin and then another mini round robin with the top two or three. It's like it's the top three or four depending on how many are in their in Bazeley. Basically if a team wins all of its games in both Brown Robinson there is no playoff. Yeah basically how it works but Yeah they do they do a round robin and then they cut it down to I think for three or four in the play again in then either the top and then the top two depending on how they've done against each other either the second place team has has to be the first place team twice or there's only one championship game yet or there are no champ or there is no playoff depending on how the two round Robins Yep Interesting in Switzerland where so they're they're Europeans. Representative was based entirely early on order of merit points and Yangzhou Waller Did well enough on tour especially early in the year that he edged out The world's the world the world's representative Peter Two cruises team So Yanni Schwalier went to euros finished second losing to Nicholas at Dean in the final final sets up kind of a somewhat similar situation to the US Nationals were you have two very very good teams similar to the US women's side where you have two very very good teams and then a little bit of a drop and then kind of a bunch of teams that are that are very very similar Last year it was Schwaller into cruise to decide who went to worlds. I imagine it will be the same way. But they have I think the other six teams out of the eight that are in the top one hundred. So a lot of depth there in Switzerland I still think it's a little top heavy. I'd be stunned. If the final involved a team that was not to cruiser Schwalier. Yeah I agree with that. Especially that format I think gives definitely favors the str- basically the more reps you have eventually the quality is GonNa come out so the the second round Ragas the Kinda championship round if you will. I think is a pretty good advantage for swallow and short end into crews I think the women's size way more interesting because you got like you can go five deep with the world champions. They're right. You have very very similar storylines on both the women's side and the men's side you had two teams that brought in a player who had been skipping their own team to form basically a super team that their goal was not to win the Swiss Swiss championships their goal is to win the world championships. Their goal was to at the end of four years to win a Olympic gold medal. And those the decrees team bringing the hell and tearing zony bringing in Alina Pats to throw fourth rocks in those two teams who are very veteran. Teams seems very used to winning now all of a sudden have two younger teams who are really close to you surfing them. So schwalier team beat them out in points win. Two Euros currently is actually ahead in order of Merit Still against a cruise team and then on the women's side the Elena Stern team especially this season has really been on the rise. And you look at what they've done they. They won the Swiss Cup which is basically a basically kind of a triple knock style tournament that they do with just Swiss teams in a lot of the lot of the birds for for this championship or decided there. They wanted They came over to candidate candidate win. The candidate ends They've qualified for they qualified for all four slams They didn't have a ton of luck. Look at those That those slams they did make quarterfinals at the national and the masters so you have these two younger teams who are right there Since these two teams that that put themselves together thinking that they were GonNa be the Swiss team in really were contenders here's for Olympic gold medal. And now they've got off these younger teams for the next three years. Yeah and then I think again is the danger dangerous veteran world champion team foul Scher. WHO's hasn't been slamming but still top thirty the tier here too but and semifinals? Glynn hell ladies. So that's a team that I think has done everything in so they can certainly turn it on on When it matters and so they're they're pretty dangerous team even for expecting it to come out of those top two that felker teams got to world championships in the last decade? So they're not going to be pushover team either. Five of the seven teams at On the women's side For the Switzer in the top. Seventy seven team turns team Stern Team Belcher. Irene Schori's his team Her laments team a team. I had not heard of in his in fact. Seventy seventh in order of merit is a Norwegian And then there's as a junior team skipped by IMA suitor that rounds out the women's field in Switzerland This'll be February ninth through sixteenth in Thune Switzerland. In my saying that right okay. I don't think in this. This will part this will be a live streamed on the Swiss curling YouTube channel. What will be interesting to see when you're going through and looking at matchups To try and side whether games worth watching or not they won't list teams by WHO THE SKIP is. They will list the teams by their team. Team name in the team name is usually based off of either where they're from or who their sponsor is When you're looking at that Uh Schwalier steam is team burn Zaehringer Do cruises team They are team Geneva. Yon His team is K.. Blacks in then on the women's side tyranny is era. HP L. Stearns team is over. Wallace filchers team is Langenthal. So if you see those it kind of listed when their show when they're saying which games are GONNA be streamed he'll look for those in those your your big name teams if you're looking to watch them at the at the Swiss championship and that's a good segue because another country that does that is Japan. Yes in in a Lotta again. It's based on their team. Names are kind of based off of either where they're from or who their sponsor is Again like we said the men's side they this This will not be for a world birth which is too bad because they've got three teams in the top fifty order of Merit in. It's really it's really too bad because is on the men's side in Japan. Women's curling has been very well supported in the men's side. Kind of kind kind of wasn't mainly because The Japanese women have had a lot of success on tour in a lot of success at world's And it's just been a lot more popular than the men's ends game. There was a story that was tweeted. I saw it and I'll try to find it in tweeted out again That was kind of about how the men's game has finally started wanted to kind of catch up in terms of popularity like There were talking about Tournaments earlier this year. I think it was the Hokkaido Bank championship where it used to be. The women's final would be first in the stands would be packed. Everyone would be super into it and then the women's game would end in. Everyone would leave. Leave everything would be empty for for the men's final and they were saying that that recently at one of the big tournaments People stuck around in the the stands. Were still oh pack for the men's tournament so it's too bad that as that's happening as the men's game is getting more popular in Japan that you know this isn't for this isn't for a spot at worlds but the winner of this tournament will be representing Japan at next year's PAC sees where they will be playing for a spot at the twenty twenty one world's The other the other big thing is this is the first year that world's points count for Getting to the Olympics. That's why it's even more important that Japan did not qualify. This sure. Yeah so that's yeah it's it's interesting it's going from fourth and not even the world's my my hunch is. WCHS GONNA have to to take a long hard look at the end of their squad at the size of the world field They may have to go to kind of basically yeah prior format because the world is getting that deep and just kind of have sixteen teams enter Maybe to maybe do promotion relegation allegation and relegation to some kind of world beef the next twenty four down. Say or something. But it's is this kind of gathering to To that you've got a team to finish four for last year in candy even get the country can't even get back to the wolves this year. So part of it was just had a bad week. I watched that team. You Watch that team the couple of games that they got to play at the world qualifier. That were streams and they're they're rock positioning was just often they that they finished finished third in the round-robin selling only only had one crack at qualifying for worlds. So the team wanted team to play each other In the China beat Russia so then Russia play Japan for the last spot in that game. you'd has wrought Yuda and his team eighteen like their rock positioning was just off in. They got zero misses out of Russia. And that's kind of Russia was able to kind of control it throughout To to win that games ames they were they. Were just a little off. I don't know if part of it was the travel or or what the travel didn't seem to affect The Chinese Sienese team but Yeah just didn't have their best week in. They picked a bad week to not have their best week So you team The defending champion. They are in this tournament Their Third Tetsuya Shimizu used to play with a use came Sumi. who was the previous Olympic? Skip for team Japan in win. More Izumi's the depth in men's curling in Japan and has kind of started to match the depth in women's curling in the reason for that is more Zuma's team broke up right before last season. So that that team breaks up goes to This team with you to Matsumura Use came resume. Takes your off comes comes back. This year starts a new team with his brother playing lead. His brother played with him at the Olympics. They bring in Masaki way who played with Galway at previous tournaments In the other player for that team Yoshie Yamaguchi Starts his own team. After spending a year kind of focusing on a mixed doubles so that team breaking up has spawned three very solid men's teams in Japan Team Matsumura team Yamaguchi. And you skate. More Zuma's a new team Another team that will be there. That's very solid. Is June pay Kanda. He was the runner up last year. out of Tokyo after that there's a pretty steep steep drop off in terms of quality. What is interesting is they? They changed the way that this tournament is populated this year so it used to be the previous year's champion. The previous year's runner-up Three bids for the kaido block in one one bid each for a Condo to Hokuto and west Japan which initially Nippon So. They've changed that up now. All the blocks the only get one team into the field in. Then you have the champion. The runner up WCTC points the top team in the W C T in points and then a wild card. There's GonNa be a mini wildcard tournament with all of the teams that finished second at all of the block. Tournaments are going to be playing for one wildcard spot in in this tournament. So we'll find that. That team won't be decided until the day before this tournament kicks off so it'll be four four teams fighting for a wildcard spot five teams fighting for five this five blocks. Yeah five teams fighting for one wildcard spot in there doing it single knock. WHOA in one day? Wow so basically seeing then you play you so you may have to play a guest. Whatever that is a plane game than a semifinal on a final correct yeah it's GonNa be wild get yeah just set up? It's kind of interesting like the. The high performance thing has kind of trickled down to Japan now because now they redid the way they do the way that they The way that they allocate the The block qualifications allocations in added in added this This world curling tour qualifier. It's kind of messed up the way that they're used to things happening there. Yeah I like it. They should just give to whoever whichever team has the highest order of Merit Points Championship. That's just your winner. uh-huh why not why. Why bother with the National Championship? Is that what you're saying. I mean I being very sarcastic there I I do think it's fair to say the top place team or the top two teams order of Merit. Get a birth right away into the playoffs But I'm still kind Hannibal fashion the sense that I like. Some kind of regional qualification format if it's Deep enough seems like they've found a good mix that if you are going to bring bring in kind of the high high performance aspect to it but still allowing the those blocks to to send teams to this event is really really think about it. The other four blocks. That aren't Hokkaido. Hokkaido would get three spots those other four blocks now get one additional spot if you consider getting to go to the wild card tournament as as being a spot. Yeah I would do that. I think that this is actually what order of merit points are four war so they actually are kinda measure whose performed well over the season. It's as long as it's kind of clear the start of the season. What the what? The events are how many events speaking of us towards your your points for qualification. I kind of kind of seeing. The pools are filling the pools that way at all. I'm just Sta. I'm just a skeptic when it comes to using the ranking has kind of decided that teams definitely going to beat that team so you you have a except in Sweden which which I guess. We'll get to mentioned that woman at the end But I I think maybe once you get more depth in Japan right now. The depth the depth in Japan is really. There's there's three or four teams that are truly slam quality teams and then that's it Although that's their aim is the. US they're really although. There's a lot of good junior curlers that are coming up through the ranks in Japan right now so watch watch Japanese. He's junior curling again especially on the women's side but the men's side to Japan is on the rise and the engine Asian the kind of quality of agent. WCTC events is going up every year and that can only help kind of grow the depth. Right that if you don't have to travel travel to play good quality competition you can kind of build your kind of bull resume close to home movies when you're starting off there at that definitely helps too so it's Ns not just for Japan. But also for China Korea could definitely see the kind of circuit that's emerging in the Asia Pacific region. Yeah with With the world world curling tour starting basically Japanese Section of the world curling tour. You saw a lot more tournaments in Japan this this year being worth points being part of of the W. C. T. programs. That was great to see. And you saw a few of these. A few of these teams that Or are these regional teams. That can't afford to come over to Canada and play a few spills you saw them consistently entering the the the WCTC tournaments in Japan in racking up points and kind of bettering themselves before going to they're going to their regional play down mm inside in Japan between the three. The three main teams are more Zuma Yamaguchi in Matsumura So I'm interested to see which of those three teams winds up winning I kinda the more zooming me team is clearly coming together. They're not quite. They're not nearly at the same level as the team was the team. That went to the Olympics I think it might be a couple years before we see their final form. Basically so I if I had to bet on it I'd say you two wins this tournament but I would not be surprised at all SUITCA. More Zuma's team does yeah got seems fair. Those are probably the two favorites send. Yamaguchi could play spoiler. I'd say EH Women's side the big four are all there towards Kohana won the Konta Regional Tournament to make sure that they were all there Cesky Eski Fujii's always team. They were the runner up last year. team Nakajima was your champion last year They went to They represented Japan at worlds and they were second at the PAC sees this year Tori Kohana who played in world's a couple years ago like Christine. She's going to be there and Sayaka Yoshimura who you've seen at a couple of slams this year as well They actually finished second at the masters losing to flurry And then that was in the first slam of the year they unfortunately just went to and ten in their next US Three slams but very solid team very experienced team those four teams. I just mentioned they have all won this tournament. Sometime in the last five years Fuji was team I think would be the favourite but Yoshimura Yoshimura's had just as many if not more more Impressive victories on tour as Fuji Solid by those team those two teams in my mind or one into but team Nakajima's aim is your defending champion. So who knows yeah. I think the the APP probably Fujisawa. Yoshimura are probably your two one a one B but as you said the other three of All done damage lately so in do WanNa say Torture Qantas team has had a pretty remarkable Record on tour this year they. They've won fifty three games. They finished second at one. SPIEL IN MORRIS MANITOBA THEY WANNA spiel in Halifax They WanNa Spiel in Colona. They made the semi-finals in red deer. you know this team felt it's a crazy number of games are fifty and thirty fifty three and thirty. That is That's a Lotta kind of tour games. A lot of a lot of in Canada and they had they actually had a lineup change. At the beginning of the year they changed their third food So kind of expected them to maybe take a little bit of a slide this year but they've actually improved so any of those four could win knits I'd Kinda like to see Yoshi. I'm sorry I'd like I kinda like to see Fuji saw when it just 'cause I like seeing her at world's but yet any of those four could win it. The this will be February. Eighth through sixteenth in Carrizo It will be streamed on the Japan Curling Youtube Channel. In all tweet out those links again. the use the team name so on the women's side you're looking for local lar- that's Fujisawa team. Hokkaido Hypo Bank has Yoshimura Fuji. Q is Torii Kohana and Chubu. Electric Power is team Nakajima. Look for those team names when you're looking to watch The Games on the men's side console is Matsumura. SC Carrozza is Yamaguchi and TM. CARROZZA is more zooming. We do finish Sweden Deep dive seventeen hundred team in Sweden. Let's not do a deep dive. It's it's late for both of us. Sweden is February. Fifth through ninth in your shopping The Dean's GonNa win on the men's side and hassle breaks a win on the women's side. I The only wrinkle Matt as we were on our is starting. She's crack atop twenty And she's had a pretty good run. She had a really good run into Glenn Hill. Ladies probably not yet this year because hassle burks kind of still on top of the world but sometime soon as well on is going to start a challenging and the Swedish chromium got a bit more interesting than I'd say and Magnuson Daniel Magnuson for the in the men's the probably the not going to be a dean in the men's but the other junior team. Are you going to be able to play both events or not. The should be able to this things over by the ninth top on a plane to Russia So yeah the there I mean they they kinda ran away with the in their they're one of the two top teams in the junior B pool. I would would not be surprised if both Germany and Sweden for the juniors end up being kind of medalists they definitely a step above the rest of the field over the junior bs. So I think there are A good threat to win a world. You your metal but not a world medal because it's going to be tough to get past. T. Medine all right Jonathan any final words of wisdom. We've been doing this for about an hour and twenty minutes. Wouldn't cover the whole world but we covered a lot of the world world good. That's what we do here right. Ep48: 2020 World Womens Curling Championship Preview
"Yeah Hey Buddy will. Cross the pond hits a curling podcast. My name is Ryan McGee. And I'm coming to you from Richmond Virginia and joining me as always from Southampton England. Our professor of peeled. Jonathan Hovercraft Jonathan. How Are you today Ryan? Just as they hit record the Sun came out. That's the first scene. The Sun like a month. Why did you move to England? I Dunno it's cool. You get to go see Europe It's better than dodging tornadoes. But that's only that's only Oklahoma in parts of the cells that's true. I'm open to moving again. I mean if his all right. Here's my dream job. I've thought about it. And this is this evolves a lot of fantasy on my part but if there is a job where you'd be like half time. Lecturer University Profit Halftime University curling coach. I'd be down for that. I think the only job in the world where that exists is the University of Alberta. Yeah so they should hire me. What about Calgary Calgary? They shouldn't Calgary University of Calgary. Do they want to be beaten by University of l? Burda no they need to like up the game and put some money in there. I don't even think the dino sponsor curling that's what you should do you should. You should go after that job in then. Create the DYNO's Curling team curling team. They Must Have University of Calgary curling team. I don't think so if they did. I don't I don't. I don't think they qualified for that Canada West or whatever they call that conference championship. If they do. I don't think Calgary curling but Jonathan Jonathan in order for you to be considered one of those jobs you should probably think about making it out of the pool. I that's true so it's basically all on Felix basically blaming Felix for my Really harsh to be like me to feel like that he and I sky Felix's keeping you from your dream of true of getting paid to be a university lecturer slash curling coach that The other day Or League started up so that was good win. We won So I'm skipping while we're doing skip till you lose and so but skipped game. One gave up a steal of three in the first mainly because I threw threw takeouts with both of mine so we gave up a three and then I did not call a single take out the rest of the game in. We wanted to four for the entire team for the I did not know I mean I did not call a single takeout period. The rest of the game. It was just drew the entire game after the first. Yes yeah. It's pretty good. We explain the wild Amigo before on this. I think so the basically taking away basically it's just called in. It's it's really good strategy if you're playing on arena ice it's just throw draws yeah. I think so I. I told you the first time I went down to Dallas to play on arena is said never played on arena ice before and a stone like on the button and I went to throw a takeout firsthand skipping and I missed exist backed off and so I said okay. I'll turn and it backed off the other way right so basically took me four ends to admit that I couldn't make an open hit on a stone on the Biden and I remember like there's another guy from Alberta who's like another skip their. He's like you cannot. You just pulled me over after the game and he's like you cannot call a game on arena. Is the way you do on. Club is the oldest drive you nuts and it took me about a year to wrap my head around the at and then a few more years to figure out what worked and then with you and mark and a few and who else on that team that we had in Dallas Rusty RUSTY FIERCE. I made the play. Nick Meyers. And He'd pee broaden some buddies from Saint Paul's they're pretty good team and I think the way the Wild Amigos invented team was the Amigos was I just said I'm just GonNa call all draws and then try something ridiculous on my last shot and what was the glitz. The score in that game was was in fact ridiculous right. Yeah I think it was a in a in an eight end game. I think the final was like twelve to ten something like higher than that. But it'd be like we'd score for give up three Totally bonkers but I think in arena curling. That's the way to go which sought more fun. It's more fun. I remember I remember Jesse. Took it even more to the extreme. She went all draws. You remember Jesse's girls in the first arena. Nats yeah available to them well they are up to Hamburg. They called all draws remember. The empire was outrageous. Like you're supposed to be hit if you're reading it especially in the final in a metal fight all all sixteen stones or and play and they gave basically give to steal a one to win the game because the other team had no shot. Yeah good stuff it was good stuff arena Kirwan's classic. So are you how long you playing? How long does your league run for nine weeks with a by teams so Enda Mary? Yeah I think the last one clockwise arena nets this year or not. No-one from Virginia is going to arena nationals so they they're at the the GNC see arena. Championship is actually that same weekend are interested is real. I think that's I think that's when they could get ice. Okay yeah the GNC see GNC arena. Championships is in. It's either entr at Triangle or Charlotte Account Ri- CanNot remember our playing the GNC arena championships on dedicated ice. Good are you going to go to that or not? No so that's That is my son's first birthday so I will not be going to that well. I guess we're actually the he has a may birthday right. So it's actually a good curling Bertha curling parent I gotTa say why is that? It's not a great arena curling birthday. Why like birthday during the play down season or you know Pete curling season right with the birthday in the summer okay. I thought no thought that I thought it was late. Had something to do with the way he qualifies for Juniors because it's like in hockey it's based strictly off of January through December. So hockey. Like if you're born in January. You're going to be a few months older than everyone else. Whether you're midget might you know whatever it is so if you're born in January you're going to have a head start on everybody so I a friend of mine told me if you look at the NHL you'll see there's a? There's a decent number of January birthdays because they were always like a step above their age group when they were coming up. Yeah no that apply so. It's weird so in curly. It's a bit weird It's July. He wanted July or August birthday. Because you get that extra year of junior eligibility so fishers. Hose A kindest pay off. I mean I sound with the July birthday so technically my last year of eligibility it was. I was beating up on poor teenagers. I was twenty so up on sixteen-year-olds or thirteen year olds junior zones but And so I think it works that way but it's not the sake I think part of it's also with with ice hockey. It's when you registered for school so you're putting with a certain cohort and so you're actually physically bigger than all the other kids too. So that's that's kind of the theory there Yup. Yeah we'll see it's going to be a few years it'll be a few years. Although he's that he's very quickly getting to the point where he would be as heavy as the rockies He's in the hundred and twentieth percentile heighten. Where he is. He's wow so it's not one of those one of those random big babies that then kinda comes back to the mean. He's he's going to be big. No He's so he just turned ten months and he is. He would be in the fiftieth percentile if he was eighteen months Oh Wow it's good stuff easy. He's eating us out of House and home. He's not he's not like around anymore. He's like he's proportional now. He's the height has caught up to the weight and so he's pretty tall. Been your is crazy tonight because I am very much not. Yeah well errands pretty tall. Yeah yeah in the new I guess you've got your lab. What your last English National Championship? Coming up yeah this week. You're exciting next defending your mixed title. I guess so although Stu I don't should be retired he said I'm playing with you this year so like he just doesn't like well but that does tend to happen so you know but then he ended then he entered the Englishmen's you know so I don I thought he was stepping back for. He didn't step back so I'm not sure what's up do. But we picked up Kerr who I've played with in the past so used to keeping I am playing third everyone's a sliding up one spot incurs coming lead as we decide to play it. So who said Fiona Okay Cool Nice? Well Good luck to you. Hopefully defend Word you any idea were next year's championship would be I heard when I was in Aberdeen. Aberdeen wanted to host it again from someone that would know those things. I don't know if the wchs we'll give them the hosting but it was a good spots of ended up back in Aberdeen. That'd be cool. Save but I will I. You GotTa Win. Of course I you got to win so I don't want to get too far ahead of myself there and then I kind of figure if you win one of these things than everything else. Just kind of falls into place From speaking from experience you don't really have to you know you don't maybe worry a bit about the money but if it's a chance to do one of these major championship things It's kind of a you know maybe not once in a lifetime but a rare experience so you just you just pay what you gotta pay and go where you gotta go all right so our last episode Which we discussed Polish curling and every All of the drama going on there surrounding their suspension Go if you haven't heard that go back and listen to it is really interesting. We had a guest From from the Polish Federation of Curling Clubs. You kind of gave us the inside story on what led to the suspension of the Polish Curling Association. But in that episode we did not talk any brier and Scotties This is our women's world's preview but will also Jonathan you said you wanted to rectify that and talk a little bit of Brian. Scott for straight yeah. So let's do let's do brier now and then try to fold the Scotties into the person conversation when we do the women's World Pedia that sound. Good Yeah so. We are recording this at eleven. Am on Sunday. So the semi-final is coming up here in about an hour that is Matt Dunn Stone Against Bread. Gesu in the winner of that will face Brendan. Who's in his third consecutive brier final? Jonathan what did you notice? What are your key takeaways from what you've seen so far in this tournament all right so take away one that we were talking about before we started. Recording is the championship pool in all likelihood is what's GonNa be the trials pool in two years time. I'd say that basically I'm confident with the top seven. I think gunners kind of on the cusp but the other the people finish top seven a championship pool are all definitely locks for The trials the roar of the rings gunners probably one of the last two into that. Is it nine next time or eight in? I can't remember that. Keep changing play down format but those are definitely your top eight. I think it's nine so seven and two from the pretrial. I think that's right. Yeah and the gap is just massive. Now I'd say will end on the inside it's kind of it's kind of spread out. You have one really good team in each province kind of except Alberta where? You've got Korean watcher. In the women's there's some consolidation there particularly in Manitoba. Yeah it's it's a different. There's different dynamics going on both sides for swearing's is interesting as some of the teams that were like. They caught her right to me. Qatar laycock those are those are like good participants in the trials gang regular participants in slams Qatar. You know lost the trials final washed the brier. Final. He's a good skip his regressed in terms of his skill. But he's just not hitting the tour as much neither laycock and they the gap between them and the top. He's the championship. Pool was just massive right And so I think this. Is You basically get to the point? Now where we have in Canada. Seven eight pro teams and then basically everybody else So that's kind of an interesting development. I don't I don't mean maybe last year start to see it. Coming said certainly a feature of this cycle a lot more pronounced than it's been past. Let's say yen. It will be a bit more open. Still both in terms of Scotties but also in terms of the trials right you you probably four or five kind of pro teams into space for you know. Probably say that. There's another ten teams that I wouldn't be surprised if they made the made the trials. But I'd be stunned if the top seven gunners bubble team but if any of those top seven didn't make the the trials and in a year and a half's time really any of those seven could be the team that represents Canada right like even even met Johnstone how much that team has improved this last year. And you're looking at. They've got a year and a half until the roar of the rings. How goodwill that team be in a year and a half in any of those seven could peak at the right time during that week At the end of November beginning December of twenty twenty one and wind up being the men's representative whereas on the women's side. I would be pretty stunned. If it wasn't a Jones home in Anderson or Carrie. I'd be stunned if it wasn't one of those four teams. Yeah I've got those the four that clearly have separation on the women's side. But will you say flurry or not? I didn't You're not convinced yet. They're obviously extremely good team. I don't think that they're I think they're even even though they do. Collect a lot of points on tour. I don't think they're quite at the level of those four yet. In my opinion not my mic. One Canada Cup you know. Three of the four of interest scotties final. I think they're kind of like who's next right. That are kind of right on right on deck for becoming a power team But it's I mean it depends of Canada. Cup is winning a major which in some ways the depth of field and the significance. It's always a hard thing to win at a Scotties or a brier but They're they're right there. I'd say But he on the man I think done stone the one thing that he doesn't have the other seven teams have as he doesn't quite yet have that big game experience right which. I think still matters when. He's kind of closing the gap he's about to is he's going to get it as soon as we're done recording here you could have. He could very well go bang. Bang today and win. He's got all the shots are watching the one two game. It was a he. He probably made more spectacular shots. Not Game than boxer did part of thinks. The boxer teams a little bit more finely tuned. Were just able to wear them down with with more precision over the course attend ends but there there's a couple he basically had to MRS that gave up steals in that was I think. Mostly big game nerves where you've got to be in a couple of those games to to kind of have that experience to fight through those kinds of pressure situations and keep the focus up for all ten ns but once he has that he'll definitely be in the same same category as the other the other six. I'd say watchers watchers teams. Just so good at setting up in that. It's not fair because you have a skip as good as watcher in. He's not having to make those spectacular shots that we saw to win games from coup McEwen and done stone Earlier in the week he hasn't been forced to make those shots. We know that he can. And we know that how we know how spectacular of a curler he is but he he hasn't needed to his team has just kind of sucked the life out of their opponents almost all week with the exception of the game against Louis. Yeah it's very reminiscent of kind of twenty ten Kevin Martin kind of team just I. It's very much similar style. The Kevin Martin which is just. We're going to get ahead. Try to get a lead early gotta lead with Hammer protect that lead at all Kospi. Very patient wait for the opponent's mistakes and just wear them down right. That's that's the classic Kevin Martin Star. He wasn't Martin was never kind of lots of rocks and play. Lots of offense. Kinda guy he was. Let's get lead and protect that lead. Kinda guy so and I think in many ways watcher has been some tactical tweaks obviously for five rock. Free Guard zone era but very much plays in a very similar to Kevin Martin of kind of classic control curling. Is there anyone that you think has had maybe more trouble than the other teams adapting? The five rock were two years in now. This is the second what the second brier second Brier Scotties with the five rock rule. Is there anyone that you think had kind of more trouble adapting to that than than the four rock era? I think so the big difference. I actually don't think so. I think in some ways all those teams are slam teams. They've been playing the five rock for started that in twenty twelve. So we've got about seven or eight years experience playing some variety of the five rock rule. So it was the advantage. So is the answer to that like the Qatar in Lake Hawks of the world where there's there are very good tours in BC in sketch went very high quality tours. But the problem is the points. Aren't there to to just do those tours and get to the slam level. Yeah I think that's a big disadvantage right if you look at Yeah I think that's part of it and teams like that like Scotty McDonald Like the teams that if you look at the hardest the next tier down. In terms of accumulating the points the slam. Tease basically get to play on championship. Ice Only pretty much all season. They play one or two kind of high level club cash spills early in the season to tune to put the rest their schedules these days or just slams. Canada cops maybe a couple of international events so always high quality ice Always playing with the five rock rule against other teams that only play the five rock rule so if other teams are just kind of one or two years into the five rock and don't quite have the nuances and are playing all their games against teams at that level That's that's a big advantage. May Be part of the reason. Why there there's so much separation between the slam teams than Non Slam teams these days? What point Does everyone getting to play five rock? At what point does that allow them to kind of catch up a little bit in terms of strategy? Obviously maybe not shot making ability but strategy. Wise How far away from other teams being able to catch up? Who maybe haven't been playing it in the slams for last however many years Probably another two years. I think I think we haven't really had so if I think back to. When the four rock was interested in Canada that switch actually happened right when they were like two great dynasties right the Furby four and Colleen Jones and what was interesting about that. Is that Colleen Jones figure how to play. The four rock with maximal defensiveness. They basically hit everything. There was the four rock rule and Randy Furby for time called. Probably the most aggressive game people are seeing at least since wearing a gift not even more so and so they both adopted their strategy and a lot of the other teams are sucked playing three Rock Shadow. Geez and took them a couple of years to catch up so in a couple of years. You'll have the teller tardy was one win away from making the Briar. So in a couple of years you'll have the teams like tardy like Jack. Ota's team you'll have those teams kinda coming into their own and they've they've been playing five rock in junior so I think that that's probably when you'll see at right when this when this pretty good when this pretty good crop of juniors starts making some noise in them inside maybe I think it was noticeable with say Jamie Murphy's team where the Bavard Demata Bac some of these teams that are technically sound. Play the game well but when they got up against the slam teams. You could see that there'd be a couple of situations where the rock place it wasn't quite a sharp They they kind of make a few calls that that might be a big question or they may they may bail a little bit too early in the in the end would kind of disappear so I think I think that's part of it but I think there's other reasons that gap is. There is not shares. Familiarity with the five rockets. You know if you're if you're on a team that's able to essentially be funded to go curl full-time. That's a massive gap that opens up there. with teams that. Maybe you're just doing it. Part time playing you know four or five events a year keeping to the local circuit not really able to accumulate enough points to get the slams. That's a huge chasm. There that You know regardless of your talent. You might not ever be able to close. Are you seeing the same thing in in the Scotties on the women's side whereas Were just a a little bit different just because of the hitting ability on the men's side I think you're right part of it's the hitting ability up way ability. I think the other difference is there are not as many like the slams for the women's side of the game are not as Canada. Centric is one way of putting it. That's right so right. We we look at the standings as a lot more international teams that are at that standard And there's fewer Canadian teams that are basically able to to be pro fulltime so in. We'll see that here at women's world is kind of pivot to our preview of women's worlds because looking at it there's a bunch of slam teams at women's roles and I don't think you'll see nearly as many when we get to the men Right before it's just before we go through in we take apart this field in who we think. Other than Anna Hassle work has a chance to to win the world's coming up We do have some more national champions. That have been crowned. We did that a couple of episodes ago. We went through a bunch of a bunch of the National Championships. That have taken place and there's been a few more Since we last talked you so we went to kind of recognize some of the some of the champs that have been crowned Across the globe here and I'll just go through them real quick and then we'll go through the the women's field. Jonathan will start with Denmark. Mark in we'll talk about this team coming up and they will be. The Danish representative is the team. That was also the Danish representative at Europeans. Mathilde Halsey She captured the Danish women's title defeating a familiar face. Medellin Dupont who we haven't seen on the international stage here in a little bit. They were they were in the Danish championships and lost in the final. Two Matilda Halsey Another familiar face showed up on the men's side. That was But they finished second losing to Tobias Tuna who you saw him a few years ago at European junior bees were. They finished second. They were able to make the the main field of world. Juniors I think it was four years ago in that team won they won the bees that year now they finished second to Russia Russia. Were No. Yeah you're right. Sorry it's like Jonathan. I have it in front of me. I remember the national anthem So yeah that was a very solid Generated what's interesting to me about Denmark. Is they are either really good or really bad. Especially on the men's side. Were a couple years ago. Denmark was down in the European see pool in. Now they're back they They team krause just finished fourth at at European this year. But I believe according to an email I received from the Danish Federation it will be team Tuna representing Denmark. It at men's worlds along with team. Halsey representing Denmark. Here next week Why do you think that is what he even more? So than a bunch of countries. Denmark is very up and down. It seems Depth as talking to the Danish coach. Think they have four places they can curl in? Denmark. So that's not many It's a small sorry to small country but it's also if you only have four facilities. Let's say you've got? I don't know probably in the neighborhood of five hundred active curlers. That's the pool of curlers. You drawing from right versus if you have a million. You're going to be better right. I think that's the thing that's a big part of it. Quite frankly for a lot of these countries is they may especially the basically the way you develop elite curlers through junior program And it can be very up and down like right now. The Danish junior boys team is actually very good. Technically sound. They're all twelve and thirteen There'll be very scary years of. I've coached against him a couple of times. But they're young right so that means that there's not anyone in that seventeen eighteen nineteen age range that's You know competing at a high level right now that group when they when they first hit their growth spurt but secondly got a bit more experience in assuming they stick with it which is always a big F with juniors. They'll probably become another car Team that gets flowed up to the April and juniors and you know to buy tuna was a very good curler when he was skipping. Juniors got up to the world junior as and now you see what four five years is making the world as immense earns. That's kind of par. For the course army takes a few years out of juniors to catch up to the adult game so Yeah it's just his depth and having You know having enough people curling to Portland put together a competitive team. Yeah and he's got Daniel Paulsen playing second for him. That was the Danish skip a couple years ago at euros was interesting. Michael Krause who finished fourth at Europeans. This year finishes fifth at the at the Danish Championship. So that's a that was a that was an interesting result to see I also don't know if these will be your euro representatives next year every country. Does it different Like Jonathan where you are in England. The winners of this year's English championships that'll be teaming England all of next year starting at Euros if they make it to the world qualification event. They'll be England there if they didn't make it two worlds. There'll be England there other countries. You Hold Your National Championship right before worlds in then if that team wins their your representative whether or not. They represented that country at Europeans yet every country. Does it very differently? So according to the email I got those will be your two teams at world's no idea if they will be your teams at Europeans in the fall in Estonia. We have a familiar face winning on the women's side. Marie term on is the champion once again beating trend Madison in the final. We have a new champion On the men's side Edward Velzen He wins his first Estonian championship beating under Yaacob. Sin In the final Under SIAKA obsession with Harry Lil throwing fourth stones. So this is the first time that a non Lil That includes Harry Martin and Erkki Lil. First I'm a non. Lil has won the Estonian Men's championship. Since two thousand six D not play this year or no through. He threw out earlier on no. He threw fourth rocks for the team. That finished through still playing retired yet. No he's still. Yeah he's he does he kind of it seems like he focuses more on doubles but He was thrown fourth rocks for Team Yaacob season With Andrea Jacobsen skipping Finland The men's champion is skipped by Kelly Kiskunhalas interesting about that team. That team includes Willie Michaela and a team of sallow interesting. Those are the other three players that won silver in two thousand six with Marcus. Appalling Yemi So they they are still out there winning games in Finland they'll be team Finland next year. They beat this year's last year's champion of Poland in in the final Or I'm sorry. They did not they do. They don't do a a final in Finland Team Kissing hit won the round Robin In wanted out rights there was not a need for a final there. Same thing on the women's side where million. Suleyman is glazed finish champion. They'll be team Finland next year at Euros. A beating me. Atto in that round Robin France familiar face on the women's side. Pauline Jenrette is the women's champion beating Stephanie. Barbara in in the final New Champ first-time Champs on the men's side and Stephan venue is your men's champion in France beating Eddie Murphy who we've seen a few times at Euros First Time Yeah. First Time Getting the championship for In we will see him at the European beats next year. How many championships have you found in the world? Twenty-five transitions very dive deeper. Even uncurling zone Twenty-five out let's think about this a little more than half. The federations have a national championship. That you could find that I've found so far. Yes and there's a bunch that haven't been crowned yet like the Polish Championship. Which we've talked about. It's going on now. It won't end until April fifth. 'cause they kinda. They played on weekends. Basically Hungary's is in April The shed the Czech Republic is coming up later. It'll be the the men are in mid March. The women are in our in April So there's a bunch of chant like the the it seems like the countries a lot of countries don't schedule their championships until they know What pool they're in like if if they're in the seed will have it early In in that team will go to this. The European see pool in May teams that know that there are already in the pool. They'll kind of hold them later. So there's a little bit less of a gap between the championship in the people. Okay Yep so In bold will wind up will Roundout with Norway which just finished a and it's a it's a rams fell dynasty. Jonathan Maya rhames fell wins on the women's side beating Marianne Roy Vic that team includes Christie's gasoline But Maya Ramsfield. This is the first time First Time She's won the women's final. They've been the junior representative Outed Norway for the last few years and then on the men's side repeat champion from last year. Magnus Rams fell beating. Team is rude in the final seven to four today Sets two straight for Magnus Rams fill in what's funny Remember this distinctly last year at world's Magnus Ramsfield was there and he brought Stephan Wall Stat as alternate in Wall Stab wound up playing a lot of the games including in the last In the last drops that are playing the US and Shuster's beaten in pretty good in Schuster noses in the playoffs. And I think they were going to play later that day. Either later that day or early in the morning So they're looking to play as few ends as possible so they get up. A big lead. Ramsfield doesn't shake they think about it and they choose to keep playing and rams fell told. Shuster in this was picked up on the Mike that his excuse was. We WanNA keep playing. Because Stephens going to beat me the next few years and then so we get this year. Stephan brings in Thomas Souls route into his team and then loses tobacconist rams fell at the final so magnus rams fell heading back to world's they They kinda struggled last year will see how they do this year. interesting you never know uncurling so you never. You can never tell what's going to happen the world so You WanNA preview this women's world championship. Now yes finally were like likes thirty minutes. Just now got so. We'll go through this a little quickly a little quicker than we planned. I guess what ordered Iraq going on in the world right a lot of curling going on right now we're curling sees us right now would go through these teams order of merit or do they wanna go alphabetical order by region. You you hate order of Merit In because of that I am. We're going to go through these teams based off of Order of merit so we'll go from Worst in order order of merit issue of hate it and stumping literal. But we'll we'll get to that in a second so we're GONNA go reverse order of merit civil start with the lowest ranked team and we'll move to the highest ranked team in order of Merit What's interesting is you have seven teams at this year's worlds that are in the top twelve in order of merit which I think that's a pretty strong field for world's don't you. Yeah it'll probably deeper field in the men's is my aunt Denmark. Also that if they are hundred forty eighth in order of Merit. This is hulce's first trip to the world's in her first time skipping The best that Denmark has done at this tournament was they won in in nineteen eighty two Against the rest of the fields mathilde wholesale is open five and she did not participate in any slams this junior team. They really only played in three tournaments all year. They went four in three Finishing second to my rams fell who we just talked about at the braehead junior. They went to an seven at the European as which was good enough to qualify them for world's based off of I think draw shot challenge And they finished sixth at the world. Juniors Mitchell the Halsey does have Olympic Olympic experience. She played lead for meddling dupont at the last Olympics. I would say this is a team to watch for the future. I think also joined the European preview. Like they're they're not GONNA win this year but they're young. They've been getting a lot of good experience. They're starting to play on tour. Their record against the field is not great. I think they're actually winless against the field but There's still juniors and they actually even like their game at the Europeans where they played hustle. Berga it. They weren't you know chased off the ice gets. It was just the difference in terms of age maturity and those kinds of factors so for this year. No I think it's a team that in four or five years kind of mid twenties is definitely going to be a threat at the world's up next is team Kuba Scuba from the Czech Republic. They are seventy ninth in order of Merit. This is her fifth trip to the world's and her fifth Skipped Jonathan that makes her. The third most experienced skip in this tournament suspended the playoff once finishing sixth in two thousand eighteen. That is also the Czech Republic's best finish at a women's world's they are four in seven against the field. Most of those coming at Europeans. They do have a win against teams stern under their belts. No Slam appearances. Four in three at the Bernese Ladies Cup in January probably outside the playoffs looking in at the end of the week. Not Bottom of the table but if I be surprised in this field given the depth If they were able to qualify for the top six spot yet two thousand eighteen at worlds. That was a Olympic year. So you had a little bit of a watered down the field But they were able to make playoffs at your Up Next Tina Italy they came through the world qualification event. There seventy six in order of merit. This is the third trip. The world's for Veronica's opponent her first as skip no playoff appearances. Italy's best finish in the worlds was fifth in nineteen eighty. She is Owen. Four against the field. No Slam appearances. No events where they earned world Were new events where they earned W. C. T. points since participating in the world qualification event in January. They did make the quarter-final at the Bernese Ladies Cup Back in January. Yes again I'd say not not likely to make the playoffs. I think these teams the primary goal. Here's to pick up as many Olympic qualification points as possible but I think I can't see them making the playoffs this year up next team. Unh from Germany. Day finished fifth at Europeans to qualify for this tournament. Thirtieth in order merits a big. Jump there between the bottom three and these next three This is this is Daniele seventh. World's her sixth as a skip that makes for the second Most veterans skip this tournament. Her best finish though is only ninth three times the last time coming in two thousand nineteen. Germany has won two worlds. The last one coming in twenty tin She's five and eight against the field this year. She did go to one slam. That was the toward challenge. Tier two where they went one in three. They won the Bernese Ladies Cup. Consolation round back in January beating Jamison clear in the final. They went to ensue at the Glen Hill Ladies. They've lost and they're they're all of their losses at Europeans this year were to the fore playoff teams. Yeah I think the they'll pay off cusp. I would say like definitely for them. Finishing midfields probably likely. It'll probably be battling down to the final draw for that that six or seven spot kind of thing. This Knicks team is my team to watch. This is Han. You and team China. They won the PECC's She's twenty sixth on the Order of Merit her first trip to world's first time as a skip. China does have one world's gold medal coming back in two thousand nine Han You is five and six against the field. No Slam appearances Finished fourth this year at World She finished fourth at last year's world. Juniors throwing fourth stones More junior experience on this team Her Third Dong Zi. She finished third at the two thousand eighteen world. Juniors throwing fourth stones Zhang Lei Jun She was vice at the PAC season. They added Dogs Z. She In the middle of the year only went to two Canadian spills but made the semi-finals at Lloyd Minster and made the final in Moose jaw. I don't know enough about them to speculate. So it's a new. It's a new lineup for them. This year right is there for the First Year of the new coaching program with soaring. Ron is out the or thinking of Sarin teams tank. The country's he goes and coaches tend to rise up the rankings. Pretty quickly so I agree with you. There are team to watch. Although I know nothing about the team. I mean we knew nothing about them coming into the PAC's and then they went in one the thing but yeah they have a soaring drawn and of course pay Palin home now runs the whole program in China with soaring. Garon also also coaching team. So this will be a well. Coached team I I think they could do anything in this tournament. Really Yeah it could be anywhere. I think there there probably are not that well known by the other teams if they've only puts the record against the fios paid about eleven games against the field. Probably not super well known to the major teams in this field. I'd say Up Next Team Korea skipped by Jim on she They had to go through. The world qualification event which they won This is actually Jim on cheese fifth trip world her second as a skip she finished seventh in two thousand sixteen. The Best Finish for team Korea overall was last year. When Kim mingy finished third They are eighty three against the field of very good record against the field. Not Slam trips this year They got here. They've been team Korea all season They stole two in the tenth to beat him way back in July to become Korea Haven't played in anything that earned him points on the world curling tour since that world qualification event in January however they did participate in the made for TV Korean Curling League in February. Going three and three in the round robin that included included A Win over Kim Jong who? That's the garlic girls team that won silver at the Olympics back in twenty eighteen however they were oh into against Kim g The playoffs of the Korean Curling League were cancelled to to the corona virus. So that three and three record is for. Those are all the game that she's going to have from the Korean curling league a she also finished second to Kim Mingy at the Korean Winter Sports Festival in February. So they have been playing games But they've all been against Korean competition leading up to disadvant- fairly interesting to see I mean. Career teams lost few years of really posted very strong results at world championships and Olympic. So certainly a dangerous team. I'd say that we're GONNA be able to make it because of the corona virus. Yeah they They flew out to Canada a while back. I saw that posted on instagram. That they came to North America. Early of that. They're not about that angle there so that's good to hear and I'm sure I'm sure China does the same thing they've probably been. They've probably been in Canada for a while leading up to the leading up to the world's pervert nowhere near Wuhan province right in China's mostly located in the province so I mean it's widespread now. I don't think it matters where you are. I mean shoot even what the second the second most widespread country is Italy. I think yeah but northern Italy. Actually Italy might be in trouble because they're because they just quarantined and they actually are in the region. That was quarantined. So that's actually an angle. There too actually agree to shutdown Lamberti so worth yeah into Syria. Soccer's playing games in front of empty stadiums this week and I think they will be for for a while. Much of you heard the news. This morning Italy quarantined all basically all the north of Italy. So eleven provinces like talk million people under quarantine so that that actually might be an angle. Italy hasn't left yet. I'm pretty sure turns in the quarantine saw. Let me check that too. Will what really the thing is. Would I assume they're already in Canada? They wouldn't be. Would they be allowed back into the country? No no I don't know how it works here here. The issue is the UK if you fly in from country that was in a court. It's kind of flight is a quarantine zone can check at the airport. And if you don't have a fever and they don't you don't you pass the corona virus testing your order to self isolate. Stayed home basically for fourteen days. I didn't know how Italy's handling it. And that's how they're handling it here That will be a story to watch. We'll see if they mention it on any of the broadcasts up next US team. Russia skipped by Alina Kovaleva finished fourth at Europeans and beat Anisette Arava four games to one in their best of seven to become team Russia here at worlds. They are twelfth on the Order of Merit. This is the third world's for Alina Kovaleva. Her second as a skipped She's been to the playoffs making Finishing in two thousand nineteen best finish that Russia has produced at worlds was second in two thousand seventeen She is seven in four against the rest of the field played in one slam where they went four and two and Jonathan. This is a team. That's kind of been on the verge. And they're still looking for their their big breakthrough. Are they a medal. Contender definitely a playoff contender. And if you're in the playoffs your one win from the medal round so I I definitely would say their contender not a favorite. But certainly he said they're very solid and they're always making the playoff round these days Posting good results very steadying don't seem to rattle very easily so very much dangerous team but still a little bit of separation between them and the the more regular slam teams. That were turning to shortly. I'd say up next is the United States Skipped by Tabitha Peterson. They are tenth in the Order of Merit in Tabitha's been skipping all season. Nina Roth is on maternity. Leave When they started the year I think they kind of knew that this was going to happen so Tabas been skipping the team all year. Nina played Up until think November She and her husband welcomed their son On February seventh Yeah her last event was the autumn gold classic in October but Tabitha has been skipping and throwing fourth rocks all season. They beat Jamison Claire For the US title. This is Tabitha Peterson's fourth appearance at worlds. But her first as a skip the. Us's best finish at worlds was when they won in two thousand three. I believe that was Debbie McCormick. Who skipped that team So far this year they are foreign three against the field. They've played into slams where they have an eight two record. So very impressive record in the in the two slams that they participated in. I think I'm curious to see how they do. I think there's a good chance they medal this year This is probably the strongest. Us Women's team's been in generations. Debbie McCormick teams. Back AWHILE AGO. So this team. I'd say it's definitely a metal threat. Does it matter that you have a rookie skip? I think Tara has not taken rookie season. So I don't I'd gone and she's played in. Slams probably won a national championship. She's got a lot of experience playing in these kinds of events. So I don't I won't anticipate it being that big of an issue. I The more interesting thing is very posts. A really good result. What happens When we come back next year is it. Is it going to be a case? Like when Mark Mark Nichols took over for Brad. Everything just goes back to how it was or is it kind of open questions like when you're backup quarterback comes in and plays better than the starting quarterback is that kind of causes shoe so that'll be interesting Thing to see how that develops better Phil. I anticipate pretty well here this week. I don't think Nina will be drew bledsoe here unless they unless they unless. Tabitha wins gold. Maybe I don't know but I can't I can't imagine I can't imagine Nina playing the part of drew bledsoe to Tabitha's Tom Brady With this all right we'll see all right up next to Scotland. Welcome back in your head. They finished second at Europeans this year. They are ninth on the Order of Merit. This is Eve's ninth world's her eighth time as a skip making her the most experienced skip in the field. She's been to the playoffs four times. She won this event in two thousand thirteen. That was also the last time Scotland one world. They've done it twice in the last time was in two thousand thirteen with eve skipping. She's played other than team Hasselbald. Actually no she has played the most games against the field. She played twenty two games against the field. She has ten and twelve. Three slams not a great slam record this year. Only five and nine in her three slams CER- first time back at the world since two thousand seventeen when she finished third. And what's interesting to me? Jonathan got to be in the top six to make the playoffs. The only time eve has ever finished lower than sixth as a skip at the world's was her very first appearance in two thousand nine when she finished aches. Yeah so I I started. This team. Didn't make the playoffs. Yeah I it's A. We're kind of moving into the category. Now of not quite locks but pretty close to locks I. I don't want to jinx again after seeing a fair predictions for the Scottish Championship last year but There definitely playing a lot better this year. The back of the top ten in order of merits. They haven't had a signature tournament. Win this year right then no votes in slams and they were peons were. I guess I need. Then I'd say but in terms of tour season they're definitely kind of posting results again so I think they'll be gasoline in it for the playoff round after that. I think all bets are off one one of the OAKVILLE tournaments but that was back in August at that. Was this early season. And I'm a little skeptical just because the word that British curling program runs things as you're basically on the ice from mid summer so at five days a week training a lot of the Canadian teams. Don't get on the ice until very late summer. So the that got a six week headstart. You've been screaming against the other teams in the program. They're already pretty close to mid season form Whereas a lot of the Keating teams in Oakville are using that as their kind of breaking spill. So I take some of those early season results with a bit of a grain of salt. I think they're definitely better like I definitely better than they were. Last year was definitely an off season for for eve car recovering from the hip and actually be in contention come Olympic time. And we'll definitely be in contention this week. Bright top four of the order marriage was a bit of separation between the Scottish team in the top. Four teams yeah there's there's two teams in this field that I'm kind of pencilling into the playoffs won his team Hassel. Bergen one is team your head way. The hopefully that doesn't jinx her but I don't. I don't see this team missing the playoffs Up Next is team. Switzerland Skipped by a skipped by Elena stern throwing third rocks with Briar. Her lemon throwing fourth rocks. They are six on the Order of Merit. They are coached by Earl Morris in got them six in the Order of Merit. This is Elena first trip to worlds and I as skip Switzerland all they do is win worlds They've won this tournament. Seven Times including last year with team tyranny This team is six thousand eight against the rest of the field they did make it into four slams. Not a fantastic record. They went eight and eleven in all the slams and so welcome to prime time for team. Stern. I think anyone expecting jitters Obama's foolish teams have tendency of discarded showing up winning regardless of who it is like you said. I'm not sure if the favourite to vote is Pennsylvania's lock for the playoff round too but Yeah at that point. Is that point that you get the medal round in its you know? There's there's experienced in these big medal round games that stink might be a factor here but Reverend under treat them because they're rookies is Underdogs by any stretch of the imagination. Go drop parallel with the men's game. I'd say they're a bit like the Bruce Miller team of a few years ago. Where only kind of hardcore curling fans will know who they are but they'll probably show up post really good results and by the end of the week. Everyone's going to know who they are Up next team Japan skipped by Sukey. Fujisawa they are fourth in the Order of Merit. This is her third trips to Third trip to worlds and third as a skip. She's been to the playoffs once finishing second in two thousand sixteen. That is also Japan's best. Finish that worlds. She is seven intent against the field played in four slams posting a fifteen and eleven record in those slams. It's been a while since we've seen said Suzie Fujisawa at world's good to see her back and I imagine this team's GonNa do pretty well. I think very kind of a we are kind of a primetime team. Mcvay on bigger Vincent show up and play well together offense by the pressure. They actually accused ride slip. I'd say No one sixty runners pretty epic so I could see them doing something similar again this year. So I me one of the favorites. The metal up next is team. Canada skipped by Carrie Anderson. They are second Indie Order of Merit. This is her first trip to worlds. And I as a skip in you. Have you have three Three rookie three rookies on this team. In terms of the world's Shannon Burchard won gold as the alternate for team. Jennifer Jones in two thousand eighteen. Canada has won this event. Seventeen Times the last time coming in two thousand eighteen Terry Anderson is nine and five against this field played in four slams going twelve and ten like I said first time representing Canada at any. Wc event for Enersen. Sweetening and Brian. May you're The last time that a first time skip at world's fourteen candidate won. Gold was Kelly Law in two thousand. How much does it matter that? There's not a lot of world's experience here when you have the pressure of wearing the maple leaf only skip in this field. But it is eve shattering interesting stat right. That is really that is correct. So I think there's always a pressure when you can Canada and I think a lot more parody at the international level women's getting into the men's game and so can hasn't performed that well in the last decade even though they've had deftly Jones and and home have been to the kind of bored dominant Teams Woman's game of this decade despite that they can't as want less than half of the Game Salah world champion in the last decade I think Arnesen vets powerhouse team right missing from their resume was Wounded the Scotties took care of that but that bit of business and A renewed international audible for actually a very deep veteran team. Brian. How many incidents are GonNa go to see where come over over top there Also lost their up. The world mixed mixed doubles qualifier encounter with Brad. Brad Gesu. So she's you know basically everything you can do in curling a national title so I think that this is a strong team. It's not I don't think there's a fluky team to win a Scotties but this is a team. That's I'd say. One of the favorites for the Olympic representative have posted gruden goods also last few years so burr for showing up at winning a gold medal. First Time at a world championship and finally team Sweden skipped by Anna Hassle Board. They are first in the Order of Merit. This is her. Fourth trip. To the world's fourth as a skip. She's made the playoffs. The previous three times finished second the last two times Sweden has won eight of these last coming all the way. Back in two thousand eleven. That's kind of surprising She is fifteen and four against this field and This this next one's the incredible stat. Four slams twenty three and four in slams this year She is done every. Yeah she has done everything encouraging. Eighty four percent win percentage like eighty five percent right. Yeah she's done everything but win this tournament and she's probably going to win this term favorites. They they still WanNa win it. I think this is the one thing that's escape them. They've lost last year. Also go to an extra Austin Jones in an extra sauce was white right there. I went to an extra two. Didn't think it did. Yeah so it's not just lost two finals loss to world finals in an extra end. So they're right there. I you know I definitely separation between them and the rest of the field so there definitely the favourite win. The whole thing can't can't dispute that Logic Ryan. I think anything can happen here. You have you have seven teams in the top twelve in order of merit. You have six first. Time skips including three first. Time skips among among the top ten in order of Merit. I think this is GonNa be a wild tournaments other than I think you will see team. Hassle. Were Kinda separate themselves. I don't see them finishing anywhere but I in the round robin however single elimination tournament so absolutely anything can happen and I expect anything will happen in this tournament. I think so too. The one interesting is when they went to this sixties make the playoffs basically NFL playoff format. I was expecting more upsets. The come out of it and it hasn't really happened yet. The scarves embarked on with the page. Really does favor the team. That's more consistent over the weeks to get to kick the can of making the final so you don't have this year. He actually only got one kick at the. Can you get the best record all week? If you lose the semi final your toes so one of these years. Maybe not this year. I think we're and five or six seed is GonNa get on a hot streak when the three games after and win the championship that way. So your work poverty due for it but I Know Hassle. Borg's pretty dominant. Tim's record they've posted the last few years. So can you per se either since the only threat but the Games are paid on paper Ryan. They're played on the ice. I think there's I think there's a lot more threats than just carry Anderson. I think Fuji saw was a threat. I think teams. Stern is a threat. I I I really do think that this is. The hassle finally wins Wanted very badly to you because the only thing they don't have on their CV so give me a give me a team out of that top twelve. That could wind up finishing kind of low in the round robin and all of a sudden. They're our country is at risk of missing the automatic bid for the for the Olympics. Here County Olympic points right. That's interesting one this year this year and next year based on how you do it worlds this year and next year you earn points for your country to be one of the seven automatic qualifiers for the Olympics Give me give me give me a team that might Kinda slip in then. All of a sudden next year their country needs a really good result. In order to qualify. Could while other with two I would. I did you saw. I could see they can also see the missing the playoffs Cova. I can't see the moon. The whole thing winning a medal but he just the order of moral standings which I hate to do but they're they're the least best of the best of the worst of the worst of the best like S. I describe it. So they're they're technically that bubble team and so say Korea gets hot or China gets hot with which very plausible and post better results against Kovaleva in correlation struggles against the teams that are above the Order of merit standing. That's a pretty plausible way. That Kovalyov misses the misses. The playoffs We do you know how they're doing the points with China in this 'cause China hosting they. They already know that they're in the Olympic tournament. So are they doing this like one through twelve or are they not counting like China's points like if you get like the way it works what you get thirteen points for finishing first and then all in you go down from there to they light skip Janice slot or they just ranking the teams? That Aren't China one through twelve and assigning points. That way I don't know good question attorney just doesn't get points I don't know if the ranking is I don't know if I think it's the position you finish okay. So if China finishes say eighth than you're you're getting teams below them. Were getting one fewer point than if they just bumped everyone up right. Does that make any sense? I think so. I think you're about allocated points based on your position. I know what you're saying so so. China doesn't hold point. Yeah but China's definitely the carotene could show up qualify for playoffs and knock a team that needs points down to seventh array. Please give me a team outside of the top twelve in order of merit that we talked about so the the the bottom five I guess. Give me a team that you think has a chance to to make the playoffs a chance. Well I'd say outside of so between Korea. China Germany Italy Czech Republic Denmark. Yeah I would say Korea China and Germany. All are legit shots and making playoffs right yet. You engines experienced Severi veteran team. I think of these events. They're kind of streaky. Like they they you know. They had a really good run at last year's Europeans. Not so great. The world's Kind of down there so the day. So that's kind of a team that got hot. The definitely can kind of make a playoff run China. I don't know yet. I think they're kind of a team. I just haven't seen them play so they don't really have any insights in. Saugus going off the fact that Chinatowns the throat sent teams that tend to overperform expectations and then Korea. I think obviously does have a pretty good track record and they've posted some really good results internationally so Certainly a team. That's capable of making playoffs. Making a deep run. I'll take I'll take China. I think that that they they really impressed me. Pac's they're gonNA be very unknown by the rest of this field outside of team. Japan team Korea. And you've got Soaring in Paige as your coaches. I think that that team is going to do a lot better than than most people think in all. I'm with you I think I think Hasselblad the way they're playing in the motivation to win this tournament. I think that they I think they get it done. Yeah I think so too. Korea pick career. If you're picking China for the the kind of surprise play off all right. Good deal all right. So I'm I'm looking forward to it. there's a bunch of games available This tournament being held in Canada there. They've got a couple of trucks there so a lot of basically every time Canada plays you have two games available both because Tia.
