"elena miller" Discussed on Migratory Patterns

"Elena Miller welcome to migratory patterns thank you for having me where is home for me while I grew up in a small town right outside Ann Arbor Michigan so tiny little town when people ask home that's kind of where I think of I because I grew up in a nice family town never really got outside that bubble until moved after college for now home now is kind of anywhere I am at the point I don't really think of that as my home I have always seen myself moving around being abroad being traveling all over the world so right now I will tell people that because that's back to when I need a little safe haven but I have moved all over and I would I don't really identify with a single place right now I would say I would say your idea of home probably isn't even quite determined yet it sounds like you kinda go back to what you thought of his home it it hasn't caught up with what you're doing now yet I do that's exactly true I'm still figuring out where I wanna be even ever want to settle in one place for the rest of my life it's kind of I've always seen myself Charlie around so we'll tell you just as someone who's been traveling for a while or has been living overseas for a while that kind of figuring out what home means doesn't really go away like I still think we were talking earlier and I even referred to quote going home when I was talking about talk about it well but even then sometimes I forget to add quotes I catch myself afterwards so that whole that whole feeling of well they talk about visiting home I'm talking about going to Boston but really I can't live there anymore and I can't go back there and I wouldn't feel comfortable but what is what is he wearing mighty define yeah so this is something this is something that's going to be happening in a while but I like to hear your kind of in the middle of that thought process because you are noodles in overseas and before we get to where you are now let's talk about how you got from the place you start at so little town outside Anna Arbor there's a pretty big university there why did you go outside of their for university well most of my high school goes to the high school at the plan to move to U. of M. Then so sounds like Oh did you play you very university of Michigan I'm almost proud to say no I did not I always knew I wanted to get out of the bubble of little Chelsea Michigan outside of town of five thousand everyone and we grew up in the college down basically so I knew from the beginning I WANNA be out I've always been very independent so I was looking around him where's somewhere not too far away like a good transition spot but will give me this outside feeling that ended up being Chicago so I moved on went to school Loyola University Chicago and I loved it it was the best man ever made what was the what the differences that you experienced between your small town in Chicago besides just the scale what was the fearless yeah I mean for me in my first real step outside I mean I've traveled internationally before it wasn't like this was the first time I've ever left my small town but initially cargo on my own I finally fell independent and I finally felt like I had been exposed to re levels of diversity and just different types of people in different ways of thinking that I never really gotten access to before it's finally an opportunity for me to really see what I believe in like when I think about as unexperienced the world without the filter of the safe home feeling so you mentioned you you kind of mentioned for that the other people in your in your school were mostly looking to go to U. of M. and is that what happened in most of them stay local a lot yes a lot of kids go to Michigan State University which is up a little base north Most of my friends are in that area still like my good high school friends my best in from high schools at U. of M. so I mean back there all the time to visit but that's all I really need of it I I did not want follow that that typical pattern are you here in Beijing and you're part of this program that were exploring these weeks in this is what remained the name of it again it's called the Ritchie Scholars for Ritchie scholars program and this has sent you. If I remember correctly you spent time in Italy and now you're in Beijing in Rome right so what have you been what is your experience been like going from Chicago to Rome and then to Beijing what are the differences and the problems and good things that you've seen share some for me I personally it's easy for me to look back and see how I have changed in each of these steps Oh hi Elena was very reserved very a happy in her own little space but knew she wanted more and then I go to Chicago when I get all this great experience but I still felt like it wasn't quite enough leg I still wanted remorse I went to school knowing I wanted to travel internationally so this was the next step allowing me to get out of that and so moving to Rome even the the Europe and Asia transition like is all been development sat up so Europe was a good transition area illegal good transition in-country to be in because it's similar enough you know Western ideologies and a lot of ways that the marijuana living overseas gateway drug gateway drug exactly I mean I liked it I really enjoyed my time in Europe but I think that was mostly because I could travel around so much while I was to like finally completely on my own you know thousands of miles from my family so that was great but yeah Rome itself Good Pasta good great pasta gained a few there but I did I really I enjoy my time in wrong but it's not my favorite city and I don't know I may go back to is it but I would never go live there again and then you moved on to Beijing Beijing Good Pasta here too they just call noodles noodles different types of positive ah the differences I wouldn't move I love Beijing I've really loved my time it's completely different than than row or Chicago anything I've ever depending before but I just found that I love living in a place that's so different from anything I've ever known before you said that from an early age in high school you WanNa live overseas Germany idea where that came from I when I was in eighth grade I did a small like ten day exchange program in Japan for a little bit so this is actually my first time in Asia but this I went on Japan exchange because I had a friend who's like hey do you WanNa do this okay sure so I did it had a great time my family took a big trip to Uganda when I was in high school then so that gave me just little taste of the international and then the first hits always free verse Hits Hose It's a gateway here I'm spiraling now through spiraling I don't know but but yeah so it was those two things kind of sparked it and my family always took us on vacations around the US than so I've always just loved I've always been one to keep myself extremely busy too and so I need the constant like Yes we I've actually talked to several people who have come from their small towns like I find it kind of fascinating that I run into so many people from tiny town whether it's a tiny town in Siberia to a tiny town in Romania to a tiny town in Florida tiny town in Michigan and they are the one mutant happen but your family but we still love you I've always been proud to be that person I love having this the person that the progenitor of the family who came over from both sides both arrived around the same time from basically different countries one from the American south just before the civil war one from Ireland and even back further than that the progenitor of one side of the family came over to the US from England in the US was in the sixteen forty so there's this weird if you look through my my family time line my my family history there's this weird every seven generations so this weird mutation where some person just goes up yea goes somewhere crazy and does some God awful foolish thing and I'm that guy because I have no idea why I moved overseas I never thought I would itself before but there's this part of me I didn't know was in there exactly I feel the exact same way I just feel I can see the complete flip in my person Saudi moving abroad and I can see how my perspective's ideas have just been vastly opened after just living in these places I go home into this sort of bubble of America and everything I just like I feel everyone you meet out here to has the same open minded perspective has had these experience ince's yeah you kind of have to be this is one of the great things about living in this international migrant slash expert cultures that everyone that you interact.
