The U.S. coast guard says a ship on routine patrol in the Bering sea came across a guided missile cruiser from China. The U.S. patrol ship found two other Chinese ships and four Russian naval vessels, including a destroyer. The ships broke their single formation and dispersed, but the coast guard says that while the ships were operating in accordance with international rules and norms, the Honolulu based Kimball will continue to monitor the area that formation came a month after NATO's secretary general warned about China's interest in the Arctic and Russia's military build up there. The secretary general said Russia has set up a new Arctic command and is opened hundreds of new and former Soviet era Arctic military sites, including deep water ports

"From the time the ship launched on November 13th, 2021, to the time it deliberately smashed into the asteroid dimorphos at 7 14 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, September 26th, exactly 317 days elapsed. In the fullness of time, the $325 million, the spacecraft cost might turn out to be one of the best investments NASA has ever made. Dart, short for double asteroid, redirection test, was a trial run for the technology that could one day be used to protect earth from the kind of collision with incoming space debris that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The deliberate cosmic crack up NASA staged was proof that humanity indeed has the wherewithal to target a piece of interplanetary rubble intercepted on the fly and potentially redirect its trajectory enough to keep earth safe from harm. Though it will take some time for astronomers to determine if the mission achieved its asteroid deflection goals, NASA officials are optimistic. As far as we can tell, our first planetary defense test was a success, set Elena Adams, program manager, and dark missions systems engineer, following the impact. I think earthlings should sleep better. Definitely I will. Dimorphos was a good choice for that first test. As asteroids go, it is not much to speak of, measuring just 160 meters across. It is a moonlit of the larger 780 meter asteroid didymos. The didymos dimorphos duo are currently 11 million kilometers about 7 million miles from earth, orbiting the sun in a path that never brings them anywhere within the vicinity of our planet. It is both that safe remove from earth and the particularities of dimorphos orbit that made it a prime target for an initial test of deflection technology. It takes the dimorphos moonlit precisely 11 hours and 55 minutes to complete one orbit around didymos. The goal of the mission was to see if a collision with a spacecraft could change that orbital period, slowing it down by about ten minutes or just 1%. Just such a slight pumping of the brakes, when an actual piece of incoming ordinance is approaching earth, might be enough to allow our planet to fly past the point in space at which the two bodies might have collided. Essentially, dodging a cosmic bullet. The matchup between dart and dimorphos did not initially seem like a terribly good one. Dimorphos is estimated to weigh roughly 5 billion kilograms, or 11 billion pounds, and as close to the length of two football fields. Dart weighed just 570 kilograms about 1260 pounds, and measured only 2.6 meters across.

"The size of Texas mister president It's what we call a global killer The end of mankind half the world the incinerated by the heat blast You know movies like Armageddon which featured Bruce Willis trying to blow up an incoming asteroid with a nuclear bomb There won't be quite as much drama with NASA's double asteroid redirection test or dart So dart is demonstrating asteroid deflection It is absolutely not asteroid disruption which is how it goes a lot of times in the movies Rather than trying to obliterate an asteroid dart will just give one a little nudge by ramming a spacecraft into it Have no fear the target asteroid is no danger now And there's no chance that this mission could send it careening towards us There is absolutely no way that the dark test is a threat to the earth Chabot says the dart spacecraft will travel over 6 million miles to a big asteroid that's orbited by a smaller asteroid It's the smaller one that's the target The space rock is about 500 feet across And so it's like a small golf cart running into a great pyramid Except this golf cart will be going 15,000 mph The impact will happen next autumn Elena Adams is a mission systems engineer at the applied physics laboratory She says in the last few hours she and her colleagues will simply watch and wait as the spacecraft hones in on its target sending pictures back to earth as it gets closer and closer It is four hours of watching paint dry But kind of terrifying At the same time because the spacecraft's completely autonomous In the final seconds before impact scientists will get their first good look at the space rock It's so small and so far away that telescopes can't really see it Instead they see this pair of asteroids as little more than a point of light but it dims whenever the small asteroid passes in front of its larger companion It normally orbits once every 11 hours and 55 minutes but the impact should slightly shorten that time period by how many minutes no one knows Adam says everyone will watch closely and just see how does it react to being pushed She says this test should help NASA understand what its options are If it ever spots a space rock headed this way Nell Greenfield voice NPR news.
