"General motors have committed to fully shift. Ease by twenty thirty. So that's nine more years and ford says that they're going to be moved to full. Ev in europe by twenty thirty the the us will come a little bit later. But if you look at their website. Ford has an amazing array of vehicles on there. They really have gone for it. They have pickup trucks and all different types of vehicles. Heavy duty vehicles. Suv that's a hybrid. They have a lot of great. They have a lot of great options on there. So and there's a lot many many more car manufacturers that are already making in the trend indicates that we're going to see significant changes in the amount of these on the road very soon according to the heart of the amount of these being sold being sold. Not on the road. Yeah because there's a delay. There's a significant. Go your your what was your on your on. Your tesla steve. Now i'm not talking about that. I'm talking about even if we say we meet biden's goal as fifty percent cars sold in the united states are going to be easy and by twenty thirty by twenty fifty. Most cars on the road are still gonna be internal combustion is still going to be gasoline so because because people hold onto their cars for so long you know we need to get really to get to one hundred percent by twenty thirty if we wanna meet our twenty fifty goal of no carbon twenty fifty. We're not going to knock it. We're not gonna make it cannot happen so the the interesting thing and the thing that i really loved about researching this was finding out. Just how good. The technology is right now. So electric motors have made huge technical leaps in the last ten years along with the hardware and software that control them. that know. that was very important. Because you know you. These electric motors have to be efficient and there was a lot of things that that had to evolve and the technology had to get to a certain point. Charging stations have also made technological improvements but the shining star of all of this is what is battery battery technology. The cost of come down by an order of magnitude. We finally now see battery technology where it needs to be to start mass production of electric cars here right now. The batteries are good enough now. The batteries are lasting longer. And they're steadily becoming more energy dense now. We sat on the show million times. Talk about batteries for the last sixteen years constantly talking about battery technologies. There hasn't been a major breakthrough since we've been doing this podcast. There hasn't been this one singular event where we're like. Oh my god now. Phones are gonna last three times as well but what has happened is exactly what steve. I remember you saying this a long time ago. Slow incremental progress has been happening and what happened recently. We did get over a line. There is a line that exists. Now we're the batteries are good enough where they're going to last long enough for the average consumer to be an easy and not even feel the distance limit which is great. That means it's here. Were happening right now and again. I wanted to remind everyone that steve brought up before there is there is concerned about battery shortage of raw materials and everything are recycling technology. We know how to recycle the batteries. We know how to reclaim them. It was funny as the recycling facilities are saying. There isn't enough batteries to recycle yet. Because we don't have another storing them. There just isn't enough people using these big car batteries to make a big difference yet. Have three percent of the cars are are e we want to go to sixty seventy one hundred percent obviously if we need to increase the number of batteries out can't just recycle the existing ones. Well it'd be one we're gonna take a quick break from our show to talk.

You'll see too many modeled. I wonder if we could still get it started. Yeah, I'm sure you haven't started it lately. Somebody should start it. Cars are meant to be run, son. You know that Maybe maybe it's it's running. I don't know. Eight start saving your paintings. Because coming up September 16th through the 18th at Barrett Jackson's Houston show. 66 Shelby GT 3 50. The Andrettis Stirling Moss, you know, go for all the money. Yeah, it's going to go there and they they did not say if there was, uh They didn't put a price tag on it. I God knows what it's going to be. I mean, this is going to probably go through the roof. Where is that? Houston, Houston, Houston coming up just a couple of weeks next month. Um, something else. Somebody did very cool. They built a full size replica of a sucre. Out of Legos. Uh, okay with an electric motor. Get this. They're sucre. Does 17 miles an hour. Wow. It's completely built out of Legos. 477,303 Lego pieces. That's a lot of stuff to step on in the middle of the night barefoot it, um it weighs about £500 more. Than real Sucre. But It looks like I mean, you know, they didn't show a close up picture where you can see all the little lines and everything. They just They showed it at a distance and It's cool what they're doing with these Legos. Now. Can you imagine what that would look like? If you had, like an accident? Oh, then you gotta put it all put it all back together again. Fall 477,000 pieces. Um, yeah, that's crazy. You know Legos. And hot wheels. Have become a thing again. Yeah. I mean, I don't know if Legos ever really went away, but a lot of people are building. You know, scale model. Cars and motorcycles and and all kinds of stuff out of these Legos. And hot wheels have gone through the roof. Yeah, that's cool. You know. Now you got guys building cars. Like old hot wheels. You know, just concept cars. And they're getting all the money and some of those hot wheels the rare ones like the What was it? We talked about the 18 window. VW bus. It's going for thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars and it was a 79 cent toy when it came out. Absolutely anything that you could collect. If you wait around long enough. Somebody starts a trend. Yeah, it really happens. And if you could, if you could have a little foresight and know what that was going to be. You know, you could make a fortune. I mean, you know, baseball cards have gone by the wayside. They're not worth anything anymore. But there was a time. 20 years ago. Where they were going for all the money. Yeah. "Aerodynamic car in the world is also electric and a Mercedes. The Mercedes Benz E Q. S. Has a drag coefficient of 0.0.2 besting competitors like the Tesla Model s and the Lucid air, freelance auto journalist Roberto Baldwin said. There's one simple reason for that. They wouldn't give us a target, but I think Targeting 400 miles and to get that they need, you know, you gotta you gotta pull down that drag coefficient. He also says the range helps Mercedes position the U. S. As an alternative to its gas powered flagship, The s class CS class owner's not going to be happy with 200 miles. You know, a lot of us are, you know 202 150 Miles. I think that's fine for everyone. But if you're an s class owner, you're paying a lot of money. And you're you're expecting the best of the best. The EQ s can be optioned with dual electric motors and what Mercedes calls hyper screen in place of the dash. Board. The History of the Electric Car

"It or not. The electric automobile is almost two hundred years old in eighteen. Twenty eight hungarian priest by the name of unused djedovic created a simple electric motor and may have created a device that converted it into motion in eighteen. Thirty two scottish inventor robert anderson created a very simple vehicle which is basically a carriage a non rechargeable electric battery into crude electric motor. It didn't go very far and it didn't go very fast. But it was a self-propelled electric vehicle. Electric vehicles were mostly novelties. And weren't something that could find practical use. There was no centralized electrical generation at the time. And there were. No wires transmitting electricity. And moreover every time you use the car you had to get a brand new battery. It isn't believed that any of these very early vehicles actually ever carried a passenger. Many people in the mid nineteenth century created electric devices which moved including prototype electric trains however the fundamental problem that electric vehicles run into for poor batteries and very inefficient motors. The first big development came in eighteen fifty nine by french physicist guest on plenty who invented the acid lead battery. This was a breakthrough in that. The battery can be recharged over and over. Even though there had been improvements over the years this is still basically the same type of battery found in most cars today in eighteen. Eighty one french inventor gustav trevi created the first thing that we would probably recognize as an automobile. It was an electrically driven vehicle. That could carry a pasture down a public street trevi. Interestingly enough also applied electric motor to a boat thus creating the world's first outboard motor in eighteen eighty two englishman. Thomas parker produced a commercial electric vehicle. It wasn't until eighteen. Five that german engineer karl benz invented the first internal combustion engine automobile and the name benz should ring a bell to anyone who's remotely familiar with cars.

"You saw. Hey they're giving away money for people who can solve a problem. Let's go try to solve it and see how we do and obviously did very well. Why do you think you want like what's why did you come up with this design. And why do you think you won the competition with this design coming from completely not aviation background which i will point out is not unusual for people outside an industry to come up with the disruptive technologies and solutions. That's very that's normal. Congratulations for proving that right. But what do you think. Why do you think you one so the prize. Winning designs not this so we have pretty model. That's more a apostles whole bike and window on that. And i think we won't because we had that not much background but we sink about from the prince of fast principal and rebuild the as ground up and he was that initial sync and that was like a more imagine imaginary sink and realize the tarrant gathered a talented people and we could build concept and fry it. So i think that was Reason we want so that was more maserati seeing but y able to build because we gather the talented people and by such a great team could be one that price. I love the validation of the whole innovation ecosystem where they start out with a prize. You build something that is mostly An idea and then because you won you're able to turn that idea into something real. That's based on just the initial concept the initial concept was not what you're obviously going to commercialize but it gave you a boost to commercialization from from winning the prize. Which was just to demonstrate the technology that would be disruptive and here. It is proving you right. What are your immediate goals you. You said you wanna get experimental 's certification or not really the right word but you want to build an actual experimental aircraft next and then after that. What's what comes up next. We wanted to sell this aircraft as a kit playing for next year After the got gotta certification and the certified in if an advocate laced then afterwards we wanna try to make it a part twenty three certification for domestic production or depending on conditions light sport aircraft. And we wanted to sell this. Erica from customers who are willing to participate in the service or only sarath and all the people who are interested in our aircraft is the first aircraft can be a single pilot single user or is it going to be like basically what we see here or is it going to be multiple like one pilot plus a passenger or it was the first aircraft that you want to certify kit. I really willing to make it as a single seat because in hand the full tunnels flight. There's no need to have a pilot for passengers. So we designed a single seat aircraft at focusing on but it depending on customer's request we can make two seaters for a town aligned way to produce there's customers will that's great. Let's get into some of the things that people might use it experience. How far how high how fast. How much time in the air. Those those are the things that whenever et whenever anybody. Here's battery powered electric motors. That they all wanna know. What kind of batteries. How long does it take the charge. How long does it last. How far can i go. Those are the obvious questions that if you don't have good enough answers you're no one's gonna buy you know to fly around their their their own house. So what what kind of what can you tell us about. The expected performance parameters the range will be one hundred mile and free time is one hour and cruise cruising speed will be one hundred mph. That's enough right so that sounds pretty square. One hundred one hundred one hour okay. And how long will it take. Charge the batteries to do that. One hour do you think right now so right now it's about two or three hours to.

The Tesla Model S Has Gone Plaid

"So tesla unveiled the model plaid. Addition what are you getting for that Very bargain-basement one hundred thirty one thousand dollar price. This incredibly affordable tesla is basically. What musk is trying to do is say that these are the best car. That's kind of what they've always been trying to do what they really want to do with this flat dishes show that they can be the quickest fast cars while so what we've got here is a super duper edition of the model s. with three electric motors allowed to go from the to sixty in sierra under two seconds. Although there's a big asterisk which get into minute cover the quarter mile in about nine point. Two seconds three hundred ninety miles of range at top speed around two hundred miles an hour so definitely the speed is the main talking point. But they've also made some other improve on the interior and everything else to well. Wanna get into all that but before we get to details of the car at the ask. Plaid edition is that that is baseball. Reference yes yeah. We've definitely seen a number of space while references over the years It remains to be seen exactly where we're gonna go to from here but yes we have gone. Plaid tesla had promised to plaid plus edition. That was also supposed to launch this week But musk actually just went ahead and cancelled that. He said they don't actually need that anymore. But i'm a little bit skeptical then

"Why not start with the biggest. Yeah i mean this was that we gave our edmonds talk right a truck towards the end of last year by finally got spencer longer time in over last week and then a few few days besides and yeah it's It's a lovely thing. I it's crazy when you think how trucks come on i mean this is basis This was this was like platinum. So it's the second to talk trade limits of the top trim but it had all the the hybrid system and loads of additional equipment at. It's just a it's a beautiful. You have the beds that lie flat. You know you'd these new you can hope for these seats that she basically turned into like a business bad many in most business class seats the little tables of fell out in the middle after push button guessed. It goes down and then you can fold out these tables. You know the The quality the leather just a fixed feels inside like a like a luxury car with tons and tons of space and glass roof eh. It goes all massage seats. Must have seats in fifty. He just took disciplines. You but it's a seventy full. This was a seventy four thousand dollar at its trailer. Anything that range. The belts at thirty grounding ghost serb about almost one hundred you know. He's almost kind of mad to think of it as an f. One fifty you've got almost kind of compartmentalize it but a great thing. I mean it drives. it drives. Well the the hybrid system is kind of nice to have around town but there is. It's not perfect. You feel as you do so many hybrids that little bit of that little bit of the transmission power train on refinements as it cuts from. Jim motor and back again. When it's what he's almost really generates emoji doesn't sound too great either but it's kind of nice to have at low speeds particularly if you kind of more not more urban centric like i The only thing that really makes it feel like a truck is just a a the physicality of the thing and be be the ride quality. You know you always that way. You realize you're in a truck and not next. Uv still dot. Kind of fairly fairly Ride right it's still has to toe in. Carry a payload which is actually interesting. Because i did when. I when i drove it at the ford event. I did grab one of the big trailers i grab one of the large like stream liner or. What do you call. I one of the big trailers and towed with it and a power boost towing was interesting because you know first of all it loads up that suspension which is actually more comfortable with with a bunch of weight hundred that it is without oftentimes and the combination of of the electric motors of getting you know getting onto the freeway. Up to speed or from a gecko i. I signed that of saw as a bit of it. Vantage having that low low. End torque yeah. Solids detaineees instantaneous. Just to get things moving not so. Yeah it's a cool thing and the only thing is what he you know in isolation and then start thinking if you need a truck so nathan seventy five grand you know. You're in july jelly x y. And i wanted to support a lincoln navigator. Seventy five thousand dollars buys you a pretty serious. Suv yeah it does i. I don't know how much i don't know you guys can answer that but how much cross shopping there as i feel. Like if you're a truck guy or you need a truck or have driven trucks for a long time like you're just you're just kind of that yet. You're kind of in on right. And that's what ford's banking on right. That's why they sell a million of these things here. It is and you know what i mean. Obviously i've got no talking about english roads. You know you couldn't drive it forms in the uk. But i'm a truck guy now. I love this. We went out with my. Yeah your truck guy on sunday and we we we went to hike and then we called and got some food on the way back. We actually the three of us in the bed so was like covy friendly friendly family environment. You can't sit outside. Maybe he can sit in your body. It was great. I drove a number of them. Like you're just driving now and we're saying that you know these are seventy seventy five thousand dollars trucks at this point but they don't have to be right. You said they started about thirty. I don't even know if it's even less than that. But do we know where the power boost version starts. What is basically if if if it really is a utility vehicle for you. The idea of the power boost is fantastic all the plugs and the outlets and the power on board and the the the job site stuff so kind of makes you wonder like what is the power boost entry level price. Because i don't know the power boost it's not like power was ten thousand dollars. It's a it's a few thousand dollars. Above so i don't know are. Is it somewhere around. Thirty three grand to to get sort of an entry level power boost. F one fifty. It's two and a half you remember correctly it's about two and a half gram. Does an option always tuna off ground above the. Va is an option. But i think what ford's done Had a so much complexity in in ordering a truck these days. If you ever see the old guide for netflix fifty. it's insane. It's like one of those old fashioned telephone books But what they have done is they've allowed this they Powertrain all on pretty much. The whole reg movies on the very bottom train but instead of just reserving it for plaza limited. They're actually giving you access to it across the right so you can. You can spec the truck exactly how you want it. So yeah i think it starts in the The probably starts in the thirties or the very the very least forty is you. Don't have to yeah. You don't have to get all the bells and whistles to get the power trae which is great because depending on your depending on your needs. A hobby project could be super useful. Yeah i i. I think you're right in that. I don't remember if power boost meant you'd have to get a bunch of other stuff a lot of times like oh. I want this package but you have to. You know get three other defaulted and i don't think you have to. I think you might have to get towing and things like that. But there's a there's a bit of stuff. But yeah and i think that that generates a system in the in the in the load bay is a is additional is additional but it eight some at least giving you the option you don't have to have you know.

Automakers Race To Bring Electric Pickup Trucks To Market

"At the moment it is impossible to buy electric pickup. That's about to change though. Automakers from tesla and general motors ford driven and lordstown are all racing to bring them to market. npr's camilla domanski reports if you've been watching automakers promotional videos. You might know that. The hummer ev is a thousand horsepower. Pickup that can turn all four wheels to drive diagonally with no limits no emissions and no equals the electric f. One fifty can toe of freight train the train in a tug of war between a traditional trucking. Tesla's cyber truck or lordstown endurance. The electric pickup wins all these stunts designed to make the case. That in electric pickup truck is a better pickup truck and the potential market here is big the best selling vehicle in the. Us is a pickup. The second best selling vehicle is a pickup. The third also pick pickup. This market is so big and so profitable that even a small portion of it could mean big money. A third of all pickup truck owners are open to the idea of electrification. Alexander edwards is the president of strategic vision. A company that regularly surveys new car buyers. He emphasizes that these aren't definite electric customers but they might be persuadable and crucially. This is a different pool of people thin current vehicle owners. They're not as wealthy. They're less liberal and less interested in the environment or in high tech innovation but they can be swayed by other arguments. They were looking at this electrification of their vehicle to enhance the overall truck. Nece it's that truck nece that automakers are emphasizing and all. Those stunts consider a truck. That's trying to tow a heavy load to get all that weight. Moving requires a lot of low end. Torque a lot of rotational force. Some engines are better at this than other. Engines and electric motors are actually really good at it. They have an advantage over gas or even diesel edwards says that performance edge could persuade some shoppers. Who aren't moved by appeals to save the environment these guys are looking for rugged powerful capable vehicles. The world's governments are pushing toward electric vehicles as part of the fight against climate change. Then many automakers are now convinced. Electric vehicles are the future appealing. Electric pickup trucks could help get the general public on board. Of course some people don't need persuading there are drivers who definitely want an electric pickup. Even before they've had the chance to take one for a spin. Madison grosses the director of consumer insights at cargurus which recently surveyed truck owners. It's really gen. Z and millennials who are driving increased interest in pickups but especially for these younger drivers. Being interested in a vehicle is not the same as being able to afford it. New trucks are already expensive. New full-sized pickups are averaging nearly fifty five thousand dollars and while electric vehicles cost less to operate they are more expensive upfront for the foreseeable future. Anyway they seem kind of unobtainable. Pat turner of baltimore is thirty. He drives a nissan frontier. And he is pretty stoked about the prospect of electric pickups but prices are just insane. Gm came with hammered over one. Hundred thousand dollars at dusk. Affordability has been a big concern for pickup drivers for a while. Turner says he'll keep an eye on electric pickups but probably won't buy one until the prices dropped substantially

"electric motors" Discussed on 1170 The Answer

"Have a lot of sympathy for I started in 1955 raced in quarter midgets with my dad. That's why I'm in the racing business. So I've been doing it for a long, long time in the forties, went to the races when I was a really cool guy and Ascot Speedway Saugus places like that watch racing. So it's something that I've done pretty much all my life, So I really on her side. But we have a whole other thing that a lot of people aren't factoring into this equation in the factory situation is by 2030. Lot of guys are not even going to be building cars that have gasoline engines in him, and by 2050. There should be none. So we have to now start looking at the fact that we might be facing into cars that are powered by electric Motors, just big slot cars, which will be extremely interesting and and I think that's going to start phasing in and the next five years. I think we're going to see cars racing on our tracks that have electric motors hybrids, But electric motors the only good thing about that the batteries will be down on the BOLO will make for a nice You know, really Keep that car planted actually. Jelly positive. I can think. No, no, the next part of events. We don't have a sound problem. Oh, yeah, that's you. That is the biggest problem. All racetracks have. You know, I'm actually really close to the city. Although we're right on the coast and Ventura, the city of entering the hill starting to go right up there, So our sound travels right up into the hills. If we go to electric cars the next five years, the only thing they'll start complaining about the lights are on. You know, like you're too bright at your stadium because they won't have any complaints about sound. Maybe that high wine But where we all gonna begin? Yeah. Where we're gonna plug in. That's enough. Well, big. Hopefully they have solar power figured out. They got solar power figured out in a few 100 thinks we might be all in the Balkans. Heaven only knows I don't have a crystal ball and I can't tell you but what I read and I keep an eye on all the automotive stuff. We're headed for that thing quicker than we think. You have no idea. I mean, everybody is is committing to full electric. Bye. 2050 But General Motors is now spending more money developing their evey program than they are internal combustion engines, and just about all the manufacturers are really I mean Nissan's coming out with the Orion. You got it, and then you know, it's just it's gonna be endless. A to least I got to enjoy gasoline engines when I could, you know, so that's that's a wonderful thing. It is because some of them like an often have there. There's some motor die. Such a beautiful sound like Formula One, You know, 20 years ago when they had, you know, state cylinders and 16 cylinders and tense. Those are all just great sounding motors. They had such a thing. But yes, that'll go away. Maybe the kids will tune in and listen to some old racially go. What the heck is that? What that noise well to put on Cord versus Ferrari. And then then they'll be able to get there get their fix. That's lovely. Lovely money. Yeah, absolutely is. Yeah, well, you know, Like I said, it's guys like you and don, that's going to keep this thing going, and that's what that's the only thing we can That's the only thing we can hope for. Well, um, I started the race track 42 years ago. It was just a little speedway bike track and took it over and made it bigger and turn into car tracks. I feel real responsible to everybody that you know, jumped on the way and then race there some famous racism grace there, so I'll continue to do it. I'm not getting any younger. I'm a kind of an old man right now. But But I truly love it and to hear this nine year old girl, which is great, a nine year old girl so happy to raise. It's so it's so good to see people that enjoy it. What no matter who they are. I just love people that come to the races and it's been a family sport. GM Reveals All-Electric Hummer

"Had been waiting for an all new all electric version of the Hummer designed for off road and on road use, and with acceleration that would have been impossible in a combustion engine version. We talked with GM President Mark Royce about where this new Hummer will fit in the marketplace. JMC is really the on ly premium truck brand out there. If you think about it. Most of their competitors are brand extensions for that, So we have GMC and we have homer. In a premium channel for trucks, and that's a very distinguishable piece of what we're doing with both brands you have the 84 84 acts and things like that for for GMC. I think you'll see that that grow. But then you have the Hummer. You know, the Hummer model under the GMC umbrella as well, which is sort of the ultimate off road piece of that so very carefully designed and executed with different attributes, different designs and different gotta market strategies. Mark you mentioned competitors. Let's talk about competitors in the E V space you have for now, with a 1 50 evey they've announced you've got, of course, Tesla with their pickup truck. How does this compare this Hummer evey year? The direct competitors against Are you going for a somewhat different market? I think it's like nothing else on believe it that this truck is is very different from What are competitors have described most recently with the peace of the light duty pickup truck, and then a few quite a few months back with What with the other electric only competitors is doing with their truck and I don't I don't really know until we see those come into the marketplace with those trucks are but I can tell you what this is, and this is Right now, Like nothing else. Talk about what may be a sister truck. The badger from Nikola GM obviously announced a fairly large arrangement with nickel a lot of controversy around it. Is the badger going forward. Do you see that? Is something complimentary to what you're doing? The Humber evey? Well, you know, we won't sell in market that truck That will be Nicholas. That's what Nick was doing. And the big difference there is that truck will will have a fuel cell. And so it's still a fuel cell electric truck but quite different or offering with our lt impacts on the pure electric Hummer so very different. But as far as you know, the badger and the nickel deal is going forward. Right now we're going forward and so exciting piece of this is Taking what is I believe the best fuel cell in the world with our fuel cell that is made in our joint venture with Honda right here in Michigan on DH, taking that fuel cell and looking at deploying it in the heavy duty transport market. With large trucks. You know, the class seven and eight and then also in the light duty badger truck that you mentioned. So, yes. So with the Hummer If you put this in the larger context of General Motors and its move into electric vehicles, you've announced the lyric the Cadillac lyric. Now they have the Hummer. Evey is understanding. There's a bold UV coming out as well. How does this fit into the overall portfolio that you're developing? And what comes next? It's a great question. If you look at the way we've designed the platforms, both on the A truck platform are BT Battery Electric truck platform and then are better electric vehicle platform. Those two dedicated platforms are quite different. Onda approach is quite different than many others that are in introducing electric vehicles. Reason why I say that is because again we're deploying our module or pack are multi M battery source out of our Lordstown plant in Ohio. That is Designed and executed to be high volume. And the reason why that's important again for the customer and for for the market is because we can really take because of scale. And chemistry that we've developed. In fact, right here we have a chemistry developing lab for ourselves and our packs right here at the Tech center in Warren, Michigan. That quick development of chemistry and then deploying that chemistry and our lt impacts is really the secret time driving that cost down so that we can offer Not only Hummers and Cadillacs, but Eve's and beyond for the mass market piece of our other brands that do higher volume and right in the heart of the market, like Chevrolet and Chevrolet crossovers, trucks, all of those vehicles and so this has been really, really done very carefully. And that goes also into the electric motors that we're doing ourselves. That was GM President Mark Royce on the All new Hummer evey coming out of thin next year for Bloomberg. First word news. We go

Finally, a Room-Temperature Superconductor

"Not Exactly, the revolution that would result if we achieved cold fusion, but it is notable that room temperature superconductivity has been achieved for the first time quoting MIT technology review room temperature superconductors, materials that conduct electricity zero resistance without needing special cooling are the sort of technological miracle that could up end daily life. They could revolutionize the electric grid and enable levitating trains among many other potential applications but until now, superconductors have had to be cool to extremely. Low temperatures which has restricted them to use as a niche technology. I'll be an important one for decades. It seemed that room temperature superconductivity might be out of reach forever. But in the last five years, a few research groups around the world have been engaged in a race to attain it in the lab and one of them just one in a paper published today in nature researchers report achieving real temperature supercar activity in a compound containing hydrogen sulfur. And Carbon at temperatures as high as fifty eight degrees Fahrenheit thirteen point three Celsius or two, hundred, Eighty, seven, point seven Kelvin the previous highest temperature had been two hundred and Sixty Kelvin or degrees Fahrenheit that she'd by a rival group at George Washington University and the Carnegie Institution in Washington DC and twenty eighteen another group at the Planck Institute for Chemistry, in Germany, achieved two hundred and fifty degrees Kelvin or negative nine point seven degrees Fahrenheit at. Around the same time like the previous records, the new record was attained under extremely high pressures roughly two and a half million times greater than that of the air we breathe. It's a landmark says Jose Flora's leave us a computational physicist at the sappy Enza University of Rome who creates models that explain high temperature superconductivity and was not directly involved in the work. The ways in which electric is generated transmitted and distributed could be fundamentally transformed by cheap and. Effective temperature superconductors bigger than a few millions of a meter about five percent of the electricity generated in the United States is lost in transmission and distribution according to the Energy Information Administration, eliminating this loss would for starters, save billions of dollars and have a significant climate impact. But room temperature superconductors wouldn't just change the system we have. They enable a whole new system transformers which are crucial to the electric grid could be made smaller cheaper and more. Efficient. So to could electric motors and generators superconducting energy storage is currently used to smooth out short term fluctuations in the electric grid but it's still remains relatively niche because it takes a lot of energy to keep superconductors cold room temperature superconductors. Especially, if they could be engineered to stand strong magnetic fields might serve as very efficient ways to store large amounts of energy for longer periods of time making renewable but intermittent energy sources like wind turbines or. Solar cells more effective, and because flowing electricity crates, magnetic fields superconductors can also be used to create powerful magnets for applications as diverse as MRI machines and levitating trains. Superconductors are of great potential importance to the nascent field of quantum computing as well. Superconducting cubits are already the basis of some of the world's most powerful quantum computers being able to make such. Cubans without having to cool them down would not only make computers simpler smaller and cheaper but. Could lead to more rapid progress in creating systems of many cubits depending on the exact properties of the superconductors that are created it remains to be seen whether scientists can devise stable compounds that are superconducting not only at ambient temperature, but also at ambient pressure. But the researchers are optimistic. They conclude their paper with this tantalizing claim quote, a robust resume temperature superconducting material that will transform the energy economy quantum information processing, and sensing may be achievable and quote.

Hailing the Air Taxi: Secretive Joby Aviation's new electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft

"Tell us about your trip. Over fires I understand to to get to this. Secret Jobe test. Rain what you saw. Yeah thanks Joe will I've gotta say it was the story in terms of getting the story You briefly mentioned the the fire situation it all happened in the middle of the first big wave really of of wildfires out in California and my initial flights to the San Francisco Bay area, which is really where Jobe is based overall was through a dense clouds of smoke In both directions we had to wear face masks, of course, a part of the covert protocol but we ended up wearing three facemasks. He showed the flight back because otherwise we couldn't have we couldn't breathe in the smoke. So it was the the second flight that I took me onto their sort of undisclosed test area, which was even more interesting because that day. Having. Got To this location and then drove from for many miles into the secure facility came around the corner and they're hiding away. This valley was a small, very unusual looking hell not a helicopter, not not a fixed wing aircraft either this little like a strange hybrid between the two and that's that's the whole point about this new generation. It's something which we're still trying to really figure out as as well as the FAA I think what it is dealing with it, but it was fascinating experience. I showed up it was a really hot afternoon They basically were all poised waiting for me to get there since the dead they had the the vehicle on this little test area in the valley right in front of me a few hundred yards away they and that's the thing. The other thing about electric vehicles is you just turn them on. You know there's no sort of like. Slow. Wind up of a turbine or a piston foreing up it's just flick the switch and the lights come on you flick another switch and it lifts up into the into the air on a was what it was like the the sound which I couldn't wait to hear was so interested to know what it was going to be like eventually when the sun came to me, I was hoping. that it would be different than it was because I had expected something like one of those quad copters where you hear that sort. Of. Sound of the electric motors and ready sort of drums that sort of sound and but it didn't it was much low freak lower frequency sound very lower intensity. San Than expected. Vehicle took off and performed some maneuvers that are sort of relatively low altitude and the whole time I was standing beside. Justin Paints the chief test pilot and we were just chatting in a normal voice. Right it was right aside in beside us, it went off down the valley did some maneuvering. And? Transit didn't fully transitioned to wing bond fly because the valley area isn't that large. But it did become debt fatty fast as it maneuvered across in front of us and and landed and. that it was a remarkably quiet experience when the vehicle was down to the other end of the valley not too far away I mean just a few hundred yards You could hardly hear it above the background noise of of the of the INNOVA around the valley. So I think it would be effectively quite silent in an urban environment. They do say also that in forward in wing borne flight, it will also be effectively silent because The big thing about this design is it is it is a sensor they describe as a powered glider. It's like a like a motor glider really that can take off and land vertically. So it's just a very different way of looking at it. I think. It certainly looks very different. You know you think of a helicopter this has has more the wingspan of small aircraft. Yes exactly. Yeah. Incentive size. It's just a little bit short a wingspan than a embraer phenom one, hundred they they small business jared. An linked it's only just over twenty twenty, one feet body length of fears large with a little bit of overhang with the the the props at the back. But essentially, it's a very small package a footprint that's really designed to essentially go where helicopter like an forty four would fed. So that's the principle is that you're packaging this around six electric power unit. So EPA US, they call them and in a sort of a an oval shape which gives you a nice sort of equal area of left on each side and. Essentially redundancy it case one of those systems fails you've always got five others. One would power down the other forward power up to keep your balanced It's just a the so many layers of redundancy that are built into this design that you know sort of goes to the fact that. Job has really put safety as the absolutely leading design principle for this having actually figured out how to make it a vehicle fly one, hundred, fifty nautical miles. At about one, hundred, seventy five points and do it in such a way that you can recharge between between missions even at that length in a short time. So it's a the so many areas to look at.

"Fuel cell vehicles get a bit more owned out of a similar amount of hydrogen. Then the hydrogen combustion engines do actually get a lot more of fuel cells could be pretty efficient, like around the 70 percentile range. They produce electricity. So you had a pair of these fuel cells with an electric motor, and in many ways he'll sell vehicles and electric vehicles are very similar is just that electric vehicles run on batteries that have to be recharged fuel cells. July. On fuel. It's in the name so you have to refuel the fuel cell rather than recharge it. Obviously, vehicles would just be one potential use for hydrogen. It could be used as a fuel and tons of different applications, but they're still other problems that we would have to solve. A big one is infrastructure. It took decades to build out the infrastructure we've got for fossil fuels, and that infrastructure has grown over the course of more than a century. It's an established an entrenched system. In many ways, it's an investment in other words, so we would have to build out something similar for hydrogen if we were to depend upon that more heavily as an energy storage method. So that would be a really big price tag. Also revisiting the production issue for just a moment, There's the question of Where do you get the water if you're relying on the electrolysis method? Preferably you would be using fresh water. It provides fewer problems than salt water, But in some areas, fresh water is a very precious commodity. That's in short supply so we'd make very little sense to switch to water and have it become even more scarce by dedicating a good portion of it toward energy. There are projects they're experimenting with using seawater as a source for hydrogen. Seawater has lots of other stuff in it. That could cause problems from this process. And it may be small problems like relatively small problems like corrosion of the electrodes, which is now it means you have to replace the electrodes much, much more frequently in the electoral izer. But there are other problems as well, like the possibility that you would start producing chlorine gas, which is deadly stuff. We've been talking about switching to hydrogen as a primary energy storage solution for a really long time. The term hydrogen economy, which describes a holistic system of delivering energy through hydrogen first popped on the scene. Way back in 1970 talked at General Motors, a guy named Bernard Patrick John O'Mara bah, Chris or just Ah, John Bacchus came up with this phrase. Dr. Bacchus was a chemistry professor and a proponent of hydrogen for quite some time. This concept would see support come and go over the years. Sometimes it would get a little more focus sometimes fade into the background. In addition to the benefit that hydrogen would produce fewer pollutants than fossil fuels. Ah hydrogen economy would turn a country with water access into a self sufficient nation from an energy standpoint, which in turn would bolster national security because it would mean The country wouldn't have to rely upon fossil fuel resource is that air produced in other countries. So in the early two thousand's during the administration of George W. Bush, the hydrogen economy got a lot of support, largely for that reason it would remove our dependence upon foreign oil. There are people who oppose the development of the hydrogen economy, not saying it was a bad idea, necessarily, but saying it's going to end up being too costly and not efficient enough to meet our needs, so it would best be distracting and at worst, be completely wasteful and and waste time and resource is that could be spent on different alternatives. And they may well have a point. It's really hard to say right now. But hydrogen is likely to be at least a component of alternate fuel and energy solutions. Moving forward. It could end up being ah, huge component if we get fusion to work, because fusion would rely upon isotopes of hydrogen And then you're talking enormous energy densities that more than dwarf the combustible fuels we're talking about. How big a part hydrogen is going to play as a fuel remains to be seen. It may require breakthroughs in both production and in how we put it to use and until we have a storage and transportation infrastructure built out to support this Will not be able to really rely upon it as extensively as we do fossil fuels. So can we produce enough hydrogen to meet our needs? I think the right answer now is not yet Or maybe the answer is That's just one part of the challenge, and we have to solve a whole lot of problems to make hydrogen practical. So let's not worry about too much. Let's try and solve these problems first. Now I do think it's worth pursuing. I think fuel cells are super cool. I know some people who love electric cars and that model and they're totally dismissive of fuel cells. But personally, I think both models can work. And besides, even if we don't get fuel cell vehicles rolled out on a wide scale, we may put hydrogen to use in many other places. That wraps up this episode. If you guys have suggestions.

I was telling you it's going to happen. It's just going to be kind of flop. I I mean we had. We had Alfred Mayo. His happens from time to time manufacturers. Come in and show ladies. 'cause we have a chat meet we we talk about life and what role doing and I am a global head of. Pr was saying. You know we've been told not to travel. So it's it's a big deal. Yeah I wonder how they do that. Do they try to find local representation? The have a team there that they have like a local. Pr Team A little bit smaller team yet. But I guess I don't know I mean he's going to be an interesting show. How much money and how much he's committed. But also if if people on traveling and I think the other concern is people are worried that you're GONNA get quarantined. So you end up in Geneva. I'm going to keep talking. You end up in Geneva and if you imagine all the the world the company execs from all over the world traveling into Geneva and then just ending up being Maroon there. I read that that later this year. We have twenty twenty Olympics in Tokyo. They're saying hey we. We need a contingency plan. We may cancel the Olympics and they said but they need you know. They need minimum three months. They can probably do two months lead way to to cancel it but they can't do four days like like what you're talking about. They can't do five days. Well also big Formula Warm Fun. I used to working for him in the world in days. Gone by and there's a little conversation about which pre happen which wouldn't yeah it's It's interesting times. We're also seeing in terms of vehicle production as well because a lot of parts is not just 'cause made in China but he's also parts supply parts moving around the world so this there's a big impact going on and what's going to be the effect of cancelling Geneva. Is it really gonNA manner not matter? Everyone's going to release their cars. And they're gonNA send out the press kits and and and try to find some other place two like they're still going to announce the cars digital digitally. I mean I I was invited to a bunch of events down the I was going to sit down with the Mercedes. Co The global CEO on the boss of AM G. And we're GONNA have half an hour with with those guys and that's always great for me because she always learned so much a fascinating fascinating individuals as well to be running something that big. You know things like that obviously won't happen but I know a of things that Mercedes showing off and yet I'll do it digital release. You'll you'll be they'll send the images alison press releases and away you go. I think the tough thing I Geneva and also shows generally. New York's beginning of April. Is these things you know. There's a lot of pressure on these shows. Little people pulling out anyway if it doesn't happen than we'll ever happen again and Gordon is. What happens to the you know the credits into the billions? Almost what's actually spent in in in some things well? In all of these companies so many companies are taking a financial hit already. Everybody asks to prepare for factories being shut down obviously in the automotive space but products all around the world that so much is is manufactured in China and now that that Krona viruses is spreading. Everything in automotive is expensive and global. Yeah so anything. That's hit Soglo on a global level like this is going to be a big deal. Yeah I roll up in the accurate annex. I WANNA say new but it. It got sort of a revision this past year a little bit different ero and I think they did. Some adjustments on the suspension and stuff. Have you driven the sex yet? So this is I drove the original Essex. The you know the sort of iconic mateen nine. I think it was many years ago but the latest wanted always passing by always being doing doing something else when everyone was around so I finally got into it the last couple of days. It's a it's a fascinating thing I kind of. I really wouldn't like it. I really want to love it because I like the idea of buying an accuracy because I think it feels. Yeah it's almost like I'm coming out and skiing I don't need. I don't need a fraud. Whatever I'm going to buy an ACURA sex because I know what I like. I don't need to everything else so I rely. I like similar technology but I kind of feel it's almost too clever by half in that Scott the three and a half six two but then on top of that these three electric motors. And there's a lot of really clever tech going on but what actually delivers is is questionable and increasing the. I'm unless no less of a fan of potato well. This isn't the plug in or hybrids. Generally I think these days you you either go all in on the electric light the ticon all stick with a stick with a gas engine light the new cove at something and its own to me. It feels like that choice now and carrying around all this complexity and all this weight and everything else for hybrid just just almost feels like old tech even though it's cutting edge on one level

Disruptive trends that will transform the auto industry

"Us let's shift gears to the auto market we got Tesla I'm very much in the forefront yesterday at with an incredible surge in share price then today we're seeing an incredible plunge on the other side of Ford shares down more than ten percent one point now nine point nine percent declines General Motors kind of hanging in there with so little decline after being up earlier this comes on the heels of reports that show what the challenges for an industry under profound transformation joining us now David Welch Detroit bureau chief for Bloomberg news to David can we start with Ford because this is now being compared to a company with the lan must like problems without the eleven must but level of belief and faith from shareholders really is I mean if you if you will and were also was three years ago they couldn't get the hose out on time they had some quality issues with their SUV the model X. every planet you on most put out there would be six twelve months off schedule they were kind of refurbishing some of the assembled cars out in the yard it's not quite that bad it forward but they've got an explorer that they state they can't get out on time event all kinds of production issues there this shouldn't be happening at a company like for one of the advantages that the established automakers were supposed to have over Tess was that they they have vehicles new models out out of pure muscle memory it just happened there were occasional gap circadian room in and we still have been recalls but they didn't have stuff like this and and so this is one of Ford's problems sales of warranty costs ticket TTL fifty two on their profits in the quarter so these are all these are all very bad things it should just be general execution and things of that this just smoothly happen for a company like Ford so what is the thinking behind this focus on Ford but those production problems as blocking and tackling issues we thinks cause them here because again you're right a company like a Ford it's you know been doing this for so long should have this part down displaying incorrectly why this is happening CO active said told journalists that he had every confidence they can they can get their execution back somewhere in there they just took their eye off the ball on this thing and who accused the things to happen right we had a big recall a few years ago from Toyota with the GM ignition switch issue so the big companies are not immune to this sort of thing but this is kind of more even more basic just getting a new model particularly important one like the X. four out the door on time to dealers and customers post explain it other than the it's a big gap on their part so putting Tesla side because it's been a it's sort of round trip consider not round trip I mean it's it's off with a bunch today after yesterday's run away gains in the share price there is a question is this the best bet if somebody wants to wager on the future of autos as a tech item as also a E. sort of vehicle so to speak for the electrical battery which is going to be key in any kind of new economy is that the best bed or their other auto companies that are investing similarly with similar success in the electric battery industry of burning question and if you look at Tess of right now the market is saying that if the tech company attacks started to grow the company and if they've got the best technology when it comes to work for vehicles in the moment it's hard to argue the phased out the bad their cars have the longest range which means they can go the furthest on a single charge they also have a really good electric motor we we did a piece last year I would again insanely mineral tore down a model three and really ripped apart the battery the orchard motoring and he said they have is for the best electric drive system any compared to GM BMW know if these other companies I think we'll we'll catch up in terms of battery performance and and they'll get there the other thing that also has that was brand the pencil branded extremely powerful it's almost a cold and then may also have been doing other things that are tech related in their cars that set them apart they have over the air updates that can actually boost the speed of the vehicle with the model three they had heaters in the rear seats and didn't tell anybody and then one day they just turn them on with an over the air update and awaited customers by saying guess what Germany receipts space so we've been doing stuff like that that really does make the car smartphone and I think it would scare me if I'm running one of the big conventional car companies is that houses cars have become the iPhone of yeah or if your vehicles and until somebody else comes up with an android type of of rival to what Tess was doing I think they're going to rule the roost it's a great analogy that kind of brings it into focus here David wells Detroit bureau chief Bloomberg news on the phone from our Detroit bureau talking about that numbers coming out of Detroit today Ford again that down about nine and a half nine did have ten percent Tesla also down about thirteen fourteen percent give me a little bit of some of that surge we've seen over the past a six seven days in particular just amazing so again this is a transformative time for the auto industry is David was mentioning as the electric technology electric vehicle technology is developed and obviously is today was mentioning Tesla has that brand has that first mover advantage reminds me a little bit of Netflix what it did to the traditional media business having it first mover advantage having that brand the traditional companies here the traditional car companies need to figure out a way to prohibit their company to compete in this New World a

Could Electric Motors Save Classic Cars?

"Crate. Motors and conversion kits are becoming popular options for breathing new life into classic classic cars and the latest options are a little different as in there now available in electric. That means that if you have a classic car you'd like to convert to an electric vehicle. You know have choices in the United States. Such an idea might be a novelty only for the most serious car collectors. But in Europe several cities are discussing or implementing lamenting plans to reduce or prevent gas and diesel powered cars from entering their city centers so converting a classic visa to electric power could be justified as a practical move. ooh rather than than indulgence but before we get to that first. Let's back up and take a look at exactly what a crate motor is a crate motor or crate. Engine gets its name because it's complete brand new engine delivered in a crate. It's designed to make swapping out or upgrading. An old engine relatively easy. You still need. The mechanical skills is to perform the work or the money to pay someone. But you don't need to worry about salvaging the engine from another car and you won't discover broken or missing parts while you're in the middle of the installation job. Bob Crate. Motors are especially popular for race cars and hot rods. If you have a classic or vintage car that you'd like to actually get running so you can drive it and you have some cash despair. An electric vehicle. Conversion might be the way to go electric motors and power. Trains have simpler designs than gas diesel powered engines which means installation and maintenance. This is easier to as long as you or shop in. Your area is familiar with the work. Electric drive trains can also offer advantages in Torque and power and in the end and the car will run much cleaner. Some auto manufacturers are so enthusiastic about the possibility of converting their classic cars to electric. They're offering ways to upgrade great them in fall of two thousand nineteen for instance. Volkswagen unveiled its factory conversion program and showed off its own project converted nineteen seventy-three Super Beetle to generate interest. The Superbowl was displayed at the twenty. Nine thousand nine Frankfurt Motor show and sported some exterior modifications as well including a tail. Light design from older Beatles specially fitted to conceal the cars electric charging port the standard cooling vents were also removed as. They're no longer needed. The conversion used an electric drive one speed gearbox and battery system based on the new VW Yup Electric car and was completed by the Germans specialist company e classics Thomas Small Member of the board management of Volkswagen group components said in a press release the electrified beetle combines. The charm of our classic car with the mobility of the future innovative e components from Volkswagen Group components are under the Bonnet we work with them to electrify stoically. Important vehicles in. What is an emotional process? We are also providing beetle owners with the professional conversion solution using production parts of the highest quality for now though that's only available in Germany as the conversion is completed by e classics sneer stood guard. Aston Martin and Jaguar both announced similar programs in two thousand eighteen and the Porsche. Three fifty six is also a possibility but VW's as program probably has the most mainstream appeal simply because so many Beatles were built over the car's lifetime. Volkswagen also says that electric microbus conversions are in the works. EXC prices vary widely and few suppliers of electric vehicle. Conversions are openly willing to disclose those prices. Because it will often vary by vehicle and complexity of the project as reported by the verge. California based companies can charge as much as one hundred thousand dollars for conversion in people who joined the waiting lists now may wait at least a couple of years before their cars completed as with anything that affects automotive culture. There are always dissenters the International Federation of historic vehicles or fever. We're in on the trend and said that any gas or diesel powered vehicle refitted with electric is no longer considered historic. Because it's been significantly altered. Fever prefers hers vehicles as original as possible though this stance makes sense on the surface. There are some well reasoned counter points for example if a classic beetle is reworked as the EV using a kit designed supplied by. Volkswagen shouldn't the fact that the original automaker had a hand in the project count for something. What about cases in which an easy conversion is the only possible or practical way to get a car back on the road? Isn't that better for car culture than letting it rotten a field. We spoke by email with Eric. Hutchinson the founding partner of electric. Gt a California based provider of E v Crate Motors. He said certainly there are collectibles. That should remain preserved collectible oh end untouched but of all vehicles produced from the nineteen twenty s to nineteen eighties. There's ample opportunity to honor the heritage and keep more on the road well into the future with modern driveability Hutchinson says many of electric. Gt's customers own modern vs alongside their classic projects and aren't typically worried about the effect on their cars collector value. He explained they're investing more into the actual restoration and upgrades to complement the investment of the conversion. There's a big value you on usability and driveability.

"NASA is working on airplane wings that fold as they fly innovation now a team of engineers at NASA's Glenn Research Center is investigating the feasibility of shaping shaping portions of an airplane's wings in flight although folding wings are not a new idea existing folding wings require an actuation system that is bulky and requires multiple parts including hydraulics and and Electric Motors but this team is working on designs that use a shape memory alloy made from nickel titanium blend the metal can be trained to return to a desired shape by applying heat much like ice melting outing and rephrasing this phase transformation is reversible allowing the wing to fold and unfold existing shape memory technology had to be modified to accurately control them at all and allow it to work in cold temperatures an upcoming test followed by full-scale ground tests could transform aircraft design and an interesting technology transfer this same shape memory alloy can be used as a groundbreaking.

Anyway, motor motor homes are definitely motorized vehicle. Let's just say it that way. And you know, there's so many different kinds of days because they make everything from van, you know, all all the way up to a big diesel pusher, which I had a Forty-five flutter and. "The plight of Pennsylvania, or California, shouldn't we be able to learn from those things that are going on around us that this cannot be done that the green new deal is his faults and phony and terrible just think about what will cost you Cortez's saying by twenty thirty. She wants every car in the United States driven by electric motor. What are you gonna do with all the cars that are here with gas motor? You mean to tell me that every person out there driving who's driving in a car? They may still be paying off is going to have to spend. I don't know how many thousands of dollars. It is to change the motor out to with electric motor a new car. That's electric, and that's supposed to be progress for progressives. This is a nightmare. It's going to be stimulative is held over the economy rights. Holy cow. We're going to move three hundred million cars, Mark. Believable. These people are crazy. And around the county who have trucks were living there. They're dump trucks and trucks of all kinds, and the California law now has required them even trucks that are as recent as as a seven eight years old to junk, those trucks and buy new ones or convert to too costly to convert to the newer kinds of trucks that will Embiid slightly less emissions. Well, a lot of these guys are just going out of business or they're raising the prices to the point where getting something around the state by truck is going to be prohibitively expensive. Or the awhile I found out. Yes. Well, they didn't want to give you something is creative is a dipstick to find out. Exactly where your fluid is. The reason why that is. But apparently gotta go onto dashboard and bring up a menu and show, you the fluid level, right? Oh, the oil is five point two way. Courts capacity. I just dropped when I changed you. That would be great to have you have to so. So. Very attractive car, very popular. And that kind of power. Wow. There you go. All right. So when we come back, you're going to give us some pointers an answer a couple of questions, right? Yeah. Do I have a question from a listener? And then we have some pointers on working. Okay. Very good Mike Lambert from the shine shop. He and I will return in just a few moments. I'm Dave Serio. It's Saturday morning. And that means you ought to know talkradio six eighty WCBS, I'm the one and only weird, Al..

"And you love the dodge challenger you. Love your demon. I don't want anybody to ever take that away from me. I still want to drive my must. I am going to drive my five liter five point two liter. I wanna drive the Shelby I wanna drive the hell cats. What what I what I be disappointed? If if there is a dodge challenger with a big v. Eight super charger under the hood, and then electric Motors on the front making it all wheel drive. I wouldn't hate that. I'm not saying it would be my thing. But I would certainly be interested in it. You know? But if it was the only option, then I'd be like, well, where's my rear wheel drive gas engine version? And then also let me go ahead and try the all wheel drive electric motor like the accurate NS X, right? Scott electric Motors on the front wheels. Gadget spins rear wheels. Great performance car. Well, what if there was a muscle car version of that? What do you say? What would you do? Would you do a hybrid challenger? I would certainly entertain the thought no question about it. I mean, the fact is that's where we're going. You know, you can postpone the decision or only so long that's the future. So we're going to have to doubt. And I I'm open to it. But yeah, give me choices. Do not take do not attempt to take my demons away point that no question about to have a choice. That's the way. That's the only way. I see it. Dr that second why wouldn't it on the lineup. You know, you have your v. Six cars, you have your VA cars, and you have your V8. supercharged cars. And I'm talking about the pony cars here. We the turbo versions that we're going to be saying why not have those why not have an echo boost. And then have your your your five liter v eight and have you fit something in between or fit something at the top of the lineup. Maybe maybe the biggest car is the hybrid version all wheel drive, and you know, it's a supercharge VA with electric Motors. You know, who knows I'd be interested interested in that as well. But you're right. I like the choices. That electric pickup truck is riven..

"Propulsion company that allows two things or enables two things one any aircraft manufacturer to go all electric Beit an existing aircraft manufacturer, or as I mentioned a new OEM that's looking to build from scratch, and we want to be agnostic to the power source. If you wanna go electric, we're going to be working with quite a few battery companies to help you on that. If you wanna. I do hydrogen power. We're looking at the hydrogen fuel cells as well. And as I mentioned, if you wanna go hybrid and have your own a few fossil based generator in the back, creating that electric power that'll work too. So we're really focused on neighboring that electric element to aviation. Now, electric Motors typically produce gobs of torque in. I think the magnetics Motors you're talking about in the range of one or two thousand foot pounds of torque. I think mex- teas that. Bit more than the kind of torque that you're use used to in what impact with that beyond on it from a pilot's perspective? Well, guess the nice thing with any of the electric Motors is really kind of instantaneous power. I mean, that's about a fit of driving Tessler or something like that. And so I'm just trying to think it might perhaps to help you get off the runway a little bit faster. If you had the same amount of power, the caravan is I recall and you know, help me out here if you will. What is it about? Six hundred fifty shaft horsepower between six hundred fifty to seven hundred fifty depending on the model. Yeah, that's what I have about seventy hours in the caravan. That's what I vaguely remembered by the way, just a fantastic aircrafts. It is. You have picked an excellent choice that that airplane is to me. It's kind of like the one eighty two of large aircraft. It's it's kind of a. Yeah, that's that's the right word for it. Yeah, it's it's a spectacular airplane. That feels really nice niche. Caravan and you look at our motor that we're going to put into it, which is a five hundred sixty kilowatt motor, seven hundred fifty one shaft horsepower. So basically with his motor, we're going after Pratt and Whitney. So we're going to our goal is to displace the Pratt and Whitney PT six to that scale, the seven hundred fifty horsepower and we'll be creating from the second. You turn on that motor two thousand and seventy five foot pounds of torque. So there's no warm up. There's no spool up from the second. You turn it on two thousand and seventy five pounds of torque. Imagine shorter runways higher higher speeds to get too outta chewed, etc. It could really allow a lot of things that aren't allowed are able to do on a caravan or any aircraft for that matter when you have that level of torque and I'm guessing you're probably generating power on the descent. Yep, that's right. Either though, that's really minuscule the whole notion of regenerating power as opposed to on vehicles. So as I mentioned, I have a Kia soul v. so when I go downhill and I leave. I lift my foot off the gas, the break the gas pedal. It starts to regenerate. It's pretty nice. I won't say it's phenomenal, but it's pretty nice on the aircraft because you're using so much power on takeoff and flight from an electrical perspective, the amount that you can regenerate going down, we'll be, we'll be fairly small unless you're in a skydiving operation. And when those things nosedive down of the Bill probably be able to do quite a bit having jumped out of a few Twin Otters and caravans myself and seeing them nosedive that may be really powerful. But for a traditional, I don't think there'll be a lot of regenerative power value to doing it. Hey, max, having flown the alpha electric, which is electric motor. The real difference in the torque is just at the very beginning teaching yourself almost like a jet to go to forty percent power sixty percent power, one hundred percent power. Because if you ram the throttle forward, the p. factor will just literally spin it like your. Standing on the left brain. So you learned it, you know, Coke's forward. The other cool thing though, is that electric engine's don't lose efficiency as they get higher in thin air..

"Um a standard electric motor is way easier than cooperators in you know the gas fired uh motors so with that costs is dropping the second winners this technology is becoming more and more common and just like my example that has started off with the company you know that that ran often in did this and they're all the meet ups in all kinds of things to the the knowhow is um spreading around in so um it's kinda like at the same thing happened when the automobile was introduce actually there there were lots and lots of brands that were out there and then like anything eventually there is a consolidation and we had the begalta makers come on so there are a lot of people that are saying we're going to see a similar thing with uh both autonomous and electric cars combined vet m suddenly you'll see all these new garage or the dyp hire small innovation shops coming out cards now brinkley tell me that i saw hold off on buying want a new car for a few more years away i actually so i could cost as much as the car industry is moving quicker there's a pretty set schedule about three years i think two years is like moving heaven on earth but it takes a long time to get a car unom not talking about the garage shopped person i'm talking about the big the big dealers uh so the the features that are gonna be out there to three years from now a pretty well known on so but i am i am waiting that's why i'm going to keep my tesla is i i i see what's coming um and you know i i i'd rather have this tech in a mature bit.
