"Is the author of a new book on General Electric, power failure, the rise and fall of an American icon. You know, when I saw the title of this book, I thought it was gonna be about the modern GE, you really do an amazing deep dive into the early history of the company. I mean, the foundation from when they, before they were a company, when it was just a gleam in a Thomas Edison's eyes. Tell us a little bit about the process of researching something substantial. Very, very painful. Well, you do this in all your books. I do a giant dive. You know, I write the books that I would like to read, you know. So they have to be sort of part oral history part, real history, part investigative reporting. And I like to get it the DNA of these firms. And the DNA of GE goes back to the late 19th century, right? So I had to figure out, and I didn't know what it was. So I have to figure that out because, you know, the myth is that this GE was started founded by Thomas Edison. Well, within a minute of two of researching, I discovered that actually that's not true. But they play that up, AD nauseum, and I don't blame them. I mean, how can you not play up Thomas Edison? And the lightbulb. Well, the lightbulb is real. He did develop the lightbulb, create the lightbulb. But the business started as a electricity power generation. Let's talk about that because a lightbulb is useless if you can't plug it into the wall. At the time, there wasn't candles. Have you heard of whale oil? Have you heard of fireplaces? I mean, this was an incredible, this was an Internet like leap forward in technology. So General Electric plays an integral role in electricity, at least starting in the northeast of the United States. Tell us a little bit about that process of electrifying New York City, electrifying other parts of the northeast. Well, you basically what became General Electric, which was a merger of two companies. Was a pioneer in bringing electric power, the generation of electric power, and then creating the electric power grid. Remember, there was you can create electricity. Good luck. But if there's no way to deliver it to businesses and then by the way, if you mess up, it's deadly. So other than that, it seems like a simple other than that, it seems like a simple thing. And in the early days there were like fires. So you can imagine that wasn't exactly the greatest recommendation for this product. But over time, the miracle occurred. And part of the reason the miracle occurred is because there were electric subway cars and electric trams above ground. And I don't know if you probably didn't watch this, but the Gilded Age show. Okay, so there's an episode. I think the second or third episode in there where they actually have a big social event in downtown Manhattan in a square mile in downtown Manhattan around city hall, where they were electrifying that square mile of downtown Manhattan, and that was GE doing that. That was General Electric doing that. And that was like a major league event in New York City's history. Electrifying a square mile of downtown Manhattan was like a big social event. Page 6 covered it, Bloomberg covered it. Everybody covered it. I don't think Bloomberg covered it. And it might have been before Mike was born. It might have been. But when you think about people seeing street lights that are running without revolutionary. This is maybe not as quaint. How attractive was the idea of clean accessible light? How long did it take for this to catch on? If it happened quickly. So is the demand crept up and continued, then the supply rose to meet that demand. So let's talk about how that was done. Tell us about the merger or in the early days that gave us General Electric and who ran that company it wasn't, Thomas Edison. No. So Thomas Edison was completely against the merger of what became GE. So right off the bat, I'm thinking, why do they keep talking about Thomas Edison? Like I get it from the technology point of view and the entrepreneurial point of view, but the actual merger. So right off the bat, we're talking about M and a, which can of course intrigue you. Your Wheelhouse. Right. So, and there was probably no bigger acquire and seller of companies over the years than GE. So M and a was in GE's DNA. It was like an investment banker's dream. And so Edison had a company called Edison General Electric, but by 1892, it had about 10 million of revenue. It wasn't doing that well. He was just basically a shareholder, and the other big shareholder was JPMorgan the man. And then it was run by the different CEO. And who was also a venture capitalist friend of JPMorgan's. And there was another company called the Thompson Houston company, which was owned by a guy named Charles coffin up in Massachusetts, and he was from Maine, but his uncle owned a shoe manufacturing business in Lin man Massachusetts. He went to work for his uncle and decided like many entrepreneurial minded people that the shoe business wasn't all that exciting, but what was exciting was the electric power business and the generation of electric powers. So he ended up buying the Thompson Houston company, which had started by two high school teachers in Philadelphia, moved it up to eventually up to Lynn, Massachusetts. And started running at he was a very good businessman and he ran it much more profitably than Edison's company. So basically, JPMorgan and the Boston venture capitalists backing Thompson Houston company backing Charles coffin's business wanted to merge these two businesses. And the merger took place in 1892 over the serious objection of a guy named Thomas Edison. He wanted nothing to do with it. He became a minor shareholder eventually sold his shares and started working on limestone mining in New Jersey. So did Edison profit from when GE eventually went public or did he? He wasn't a very good businessman. Clearly not. No. And I'm sure he made money because he started the company. But he ended up like a 10% shareholder of GE, right? Well, when it went public, but we're talking about relatively small numbers, but at the time, I'm sure that was more money than most everybody else. He was fine, don't you worry, but he did a JPMorgan and Charles coffin and others made a lot more money. That's really interesting. So let's roll into the 20th century. The teens, the 20s, the 30s, GE has electrified a lot of America, they're adding businesses. There's a lot of M and a, and it turns out that, you know, this competition thing, it's hard, and it's much easier if we all kind of agree. Don't tell anybody. We'll meet in the hotel room, not in the conference facility, but let's all kind of fix our prices in a way that works out best for everybody. This is good for everybody, isn't it? What happened with that? Yeah, you're referring to a major league electrical conspiracy as it was called. I mean, you know, where Westinghouse and other manufacturers of electrical equipment basically conspired together to set the prices. And by the way, these people didn't innovate that. This is fairly common. It's why we have antitrust rules. At the time, this seemed to have happened pretty regularly. And they would sort of get caught or they would decide that it wasn't such a great idea. They would try to stop it. Or they would cheat amongst themselves. So, and then they would realize, you know, this probably isn't great what we're doing here. Let's wind it down, then there would be told to wind it back up again. It was incredibly unethical, immoral, illegal. People went to jail, you know, no doubt after about ten years it was flushed. Amazon beats Q4 revenue estimates, but profits slump

"Amazon is reporting fourth quarter results that were disappointing on the profit side, but saw an increase in revenue. Amazon says it made $300 million in profits or three cents a share, well below the $2 billion analysts were expecting. The retail giants as profits were dented by its stock investment in an electric vehicle startup. But overall revenue rose 9% to $149 billion. That's above Wall Street expectations. Revenues were boosted by Amazon's AWS cloud computing unit, although it seeing a slowdown as well. Consumers are veering away from pandemic fueled online shopping and working from home, and the company is now trying to right size its business. For the year, Amazon posted a loss of $2.7 billion.

"Argument is they avoided trouble in the financial crisis because they didn't have a decade of over leverage. Well, they didn't have any they had basically zero capital markets business. They had no balance sheets. So they weren't ever going to be having securities on their balance sheet that were at risk in losing value. Whereas all the other public companies had access to capital and managed to get into trouble. Of course, having access to capital can be a big problem and they used to say that Goldman Sachs, which was one of the reasons they stayed private until 1999 is because John Whitehead used to say that and I know this from writing my book about Goldman. John white had used to say that not having capital forced them to make tougher choices, and other banks, which had more access to capital. We're often foolish with that money. So you go from lazard to Meryl to JPMorgan, tell us about those other experiences. How do they compare to lazard, which seems much more unique. Being in a public company versus a partnership, what was the workflow like there? You were drinking from the fire hose. Because there were 72 partners and 72 non partners in the investment banking group, so very small. And so you're just constantly busy working on the biggest and best deals of all time, you know, and that's what I did. And Meryl was, of course, much more corporate. It was public and the ultimate corporate was chase, JPMorgan, JPMorgan Chase. So they were all very different, but you'll note of those three lazard Merrill and JPMorgan Chase the only one I've written a book about is lazard because it was so unique and really the people there were quite extraordinary and fun to write about. So compared to lizard and Goldman Sachs, I have to ask the question about GE capital. Did they essentially in the 1990s morph what was an industrial giant into a financial giant? In fairness, once Jack took over G capital in the 70s. And once he decided that, as he told me, it was easier to make money from money than from making selling widgets. Jet engines making power plants making was just easier. It was easier to do that arbitrage. And if you had the people in place who could understood the risks and managing the risk. So during Jack's 20 year reign, atop a GE, a G capital became an increasingly large and important contributor to the bottom line. And to the point of providing 50% of the profits. So that's done. Of course, it was Johnny. It was like the third or fourth largest banking institution in the country, and it was completely unregulated Barry. That's quite amazing. So when I think of GE in the 80s and 90s, the three things that come up, GE capital, obviously, the rise of shareholder value, which a lot of people point to General Electric as a key driver of that. And then 6 sigma. Let's talk a little bit about shareholder value and that Chicago school philosophy that Jack seemed to have embraced. Anyway, I think what Jack, Jack wouldn't know Chicago philosophy from a hole in the wall, but what Jack really understood was stock price and shareholder value. When he took over GE, it was had a market value of 12 billion. And by the time he left a year before he left, it was the most fabulous company in the world, 606 150 billion. That's amazing. So that's a nice compounded rate of return over those basically 20 years. "Cutting cutting prices. And many, many people jump to the conclusion that, oh, they're having so much trouble now. There's so much more competition. No Tesla can cut prices. Now that supply chain issues are passing us. Because it is riding down a cost curve, the battery cost curve declines, and I think it's battery costs are lower than anyone else's. It's drive train costs is more correctly said. Our lower than anyone's out there. And so he wants, he wants to proliferate electric vehicles to save us from environmental disaster. That is his mission. And he's going to drive down prices when you drive down prices, units explode. It's no surprise to us. Even without price cuts, last year, that electric vehicle demand was up more than 60% while gas powered demand was down, I believe 7%. The consumer shift has occurred. We are now in prime time for electric vehicles. I want to go back to Tesla in a moment, but I want to go back to your arc innovation ETF. We've done the story on Bloomberg. You guys had the best month on record for the fund, up 28%, all arc ETFs, all of the 8 ones, 8 ETFs are up 7 of them in double digits. Do you see that as vindication for your investment theses? And do you think it can continue? Yes. We believe that innovation was one of the biggest victims of the massive interest rate in increased. We saw last year in less than a year, I think 18 fold increase in interest rates. It was like a massive earthquake. And the other victim, of course, was the other very long duration asset out there, long-term bonds. They were hit at least through October if my numbers are correct. The long bond market had not seen that bad a year since the 1700s. We're not talking post World War II. We're talking about the that gives you a sense of the shock to the system, and the shock to our strategy was palpable. Boy, we felt it every time chairman Powell spoke. And I don't think we lost many investors. I think the shock to most people is how well we held our assets in our underperformance started in February of 21 when people were starting to get vaccinated going back to work and these fears of inflation started to surface. So since February of 21, we have seen a massive down round in our innovation strategies. And in 21, we had very significant inflows. Most of which we kept. Biden’s next climate hurdle: enticing Americans to buy green

"President Biden's next climate hurdle is enticing Americans to buy green. The Biden administration faces a public relations challenge that could determine whether the U.S. meets the climate target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. That is, convincing Americans to buy electric cars, solar panels, heat pumps, and more efficient appliances, officials hope consumers will respond to tax credits and rebates, but recent polling finds most are broadly unaware of financial incentives to lower emissions included in the inflation reduction act, Shannon baker branstetter, who works on energy issues at the center for American progress, says the battle against global warming will be waged one household at a time, while The White House says its piecing together a plan to get the word out, Josh peck, a senior policy adviser, says, lowering utility bills is going to be a key driver. Caller: Are Libs Going After Coffeemakers Next?

"I heard something really hilarious this morning on the Fox News feed. And they were saying that now it is a study coming out of Canada. Saying that coffee makers, coffee makers make this big greenhouse footprint that you shouldn't be doing it that way. You should maybe switch to instinct coffee and then they were talking about the pods and out of pods would be nice, but they can get in the environment and kill all sorts of animals. You know, now they're going to go after coffee makers because they couldn't get the ovens. Now it's amazing because I heard this morning from somebody that they did releasing hummers, electric commerce, and it's going to take 7 to ten days to fully charge the batteries on those when you wear them down. Now, you think about the footprint. Okay, how much electricity is it going to take to power up that battery compared to how much electricity is going to use my coffee maker? I mean, this is getting really ridiculous. Yeah, look here, Sean, I'm not surprised by this. The whole point of the left and it's hard for people to get there to wrap their heads around this. But leftist want to make you miserable. I mean, that's just the bottom line. When you look at all these countries, look at communists, look at communist China right now. Those people are miserable. It's No Surprise Prostitution Flourishes at the WEF

"Apparently there are a whole bunch of prostitutes that have flown into Davos for the World Economic Forum. Now this is not because they are speakers or attendees. They are apparently providing services on the side. And the daily mail interviewed a couple of them. One of them said that. She charges €700 about $760 for an hour. This is or €2300 or $2500 for the whole night. Plus travel expenses. Another escort service, which is about a hundred miles away from the summit. The manager says she's got an 11 bookings and 25 inquiries and they're going to be a lot more coming in. This week with the conference in full swing, now these prostitution rates seem kind of high. I mean, I don't speak from experience. I have all these speaking from looking at the rate itself, but I think the rates are actually too low because when you look at the caliber of people at the World Economic Forum, I mean, this is going to be a hard, this is going to be a lot of, you know, these days they don't call them prostitutes. They call them sex workers. And I guess what I'm saying is it's going to be a lot of work. I mean, imagine, for example, being a prostitute servicing Paul Ryan, I mean, this is a guy with the personality of an electric chair. Or Klaus Schwab, Klaus Schwab is the guy who runs the World Economic Forum. I mean, this guy is like a hundred years old. I mean, I met Klaus Schwab about 1995. I thought he was around 80 then. I mean, I don't think he was. He probably wasn't in 60s. I think he's now in his 80s. But imagine being a prostitute, servicing Klaus Schwab. I don't feel anything.

Expert Chef Andrew Gruel Talks the Left's New Attack on Gas Stoves

"All right, let's go through the list of all the things that the left thinks is toxic. They think masculinity is toxic. They think marriage is toxic, they think Christianity is toxic. And now they have a new one. Oh yeah, they think owning guns is toxic, borders or toxic. They think children being children are toxic, but they got a new one. According to the freak Scott Weiner from California who we have gone into great detail, who he is. He says conservatives are trying to make protecting gas stoves, which are toxic. A culture war issue. Well, look, I don't cook very much, not one of my gift things is to cook. I'm actually awful at it. And but I know from very limited experience that electric stones versus a gas powered stove. It's not even a question. And joining us now is chef Andrew gruel, who is an anti lockdown chef from California, somewhat of a legend, Andrew, welcome to the program. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it. All right, Andrew, you are a world class chef, very well respected. I am a layman with these things. The extent of my cooking is something similar to a pyrotechnic experiment, and it doesn't always go well. What is the technical difference between a gas stove and electric stroke? Let's just start there. Why should gas stoves be continued in the culinary tradition of the west? At the very base of this, when I cook with electric, the likelihood I'm going to burn my food is probably a 1000% higher because it takes so long to get the pan up to temperature, but then it also takes so long to get it down that when I do get it up, it keeps getting hotter and hotter and hotter because you can not manipulate heat. I can't just turn it on or off, right? I turn the gas off, it's off. Electric, it's this long slow gradual incline and decline. So you're going to burn your food, which actually burnt food, they say, has carcinogens in it, which could lead to cancer. So they're encouraging you to die.

"At the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas is something that looks like it could be James Bond's next ride. California based Asuka is unveiling what it says is the world's first drive and fly electric vehicle take off and landing vehicle, the a 5 cofounder and CEO guy kaplansky says this will make it a lot easier to fly. You have to drive to the airport. You have to provide place for people to park. This one is pick you up from your house, drive you to where you can take off. You take off and you fly. The a 5 is the size of an SUV and seats four. It travels up to 250 miles by air on a single charge. Most of the people use it as a rideshare. So they will call it like they call Uber black. Apple engineer John lohman has put in a pre order. This is like the jetsons back in the 50s. And we're going to see flying cars in our lifetime. Kaplinsky says he expects the a 5s to begin rolling out and taking off in 2026. I'm Ed Donahue

Government Is Not the Best Function of Private Enterprise

"Have always said that and we've talked about the Biden administration just eviscerating the energy independence that we had here in America. I've always said that the government is not the best function of private enterprise to turn us from this and to try and push electric cars to push other things onto the process. We're given time and given the market that this would actually begin to happen. And one of those things is actually having Dodge his announce and for those of you who like muscle cars and there's so many of you out there who do, because they're like, especially if you're outside of a big city, you like to have these cars that go fast. You know, the Talladega nights. Go fast, daddy, go fast. You know, people like to go fast. I mean, it just is. But the last V8 muscle car is Dodge is getting ready to announce their last one, the challenger in charger will be discontinued at the end of 2023. Model year and it will be replaced by the all electric charger Daytona SRT. Now, it's still going to move. Don't get me wrong. But for those who like the old sound, the internal combustion engine and the performance, the hemis, the hellcats, V8s are gone. So look, they're making a concerted effort to say look, people will buy these. They're going to, you know, this is what's going to be happening. Dodge is going to make a killing on putting some of these special editions and they're going to develop only a few and sell them and they'll make a lot of money on these last big motor additions. And for these cars. But again, this is where it should happen. Now, if Dodge sees this as a flop, they may have to go back and say, people who really wanted the internal combustion V8 engines, these big engines and these cars. But this is the decision the company is making, not in government. And I know that you're saying, well, California is going to require in 2035 and all, I get it. But this is where it needs to be made. You need the Tesla, is you need the electric car companies of the world to make their case.

"The consumer electronics show in Las Vegas is showcasing the latest artificial intelligence powered devices. From Michigan based bird buddy is a smart bird feeder. Oh, there's a cardinal that landed during that visit. Kyle buzzard says the bird feeder notifies owners of visitors and captures photos. It's bringing people a lot of joy. Connecting with the wildlife in their backyard it creates a fun app with all the different species that you can see. It's also collecting a lot of data that's going to be super useful for conservation efforts. From a bird feeder to a trash bin. The device from Olaf van der bean's company orbis helps restaurants limit their food waste. We outfit the waistband with the waiting skill and a camera unit and every time something is disposed, we discan it and throw it away. And within this half a second, we've seen the type of food you see in the amount, we see the time and the region of disposal. It allows restaurants to focus on and reduce the amount of food being wasted. I'm Ed Donahue

D's and costa coffee and the first ones the byu importing into europe are being used by insta- volt they go plans to put some one hundred fifty kilowatt charges in over the next year as well. Nothing faster than one hundred and fifty but that makes perfect sense. now let's talk about scooters. I keep talking about all the indian company l. allah and i need to talk about some other companies as well but i just i'm obsessed with scooters at the minute what if you want to scooter. That's electric well. Piaggio will happily sell you. The vesper electrica for seven and a half thousand dollars which is a lot for a scooter. Another option comes from all the s. one and the s. one pro. The i've been talking about so much over the last few weeks. Fifty five miles an hour for the s. One seventy one miles an hour for the pro. Seventy one mile an hour on a little scooter. Like yeah you bulls still to do that. Let's loads of performance. And it's look is over the legal speed limit in this country on a scale. If you think about the seventy five mile range of the base one hundred twelve mile range of the pro version it does get quite compelling seven inch digital dash to show the information that you need and it starts at the equivalent of indian vehicle of one thousand three hundred fifty us dollars. They figure export them as well. I would have. I will just go to cairo. I can ride a scooter on l. place kaanai with my license past many many years ago Yet like absolutely. I'd have one of those in the garrick for twelve thirteen hundred quid. Yes please hero or another company. Though hero motor corp also rivaling all with the electric scooter business in india by next year the start of next year as well hero mosey coupe. Which is the world's longest to will manufacturer for the last twenty years right. They're going to debut their electric two wheel muddle relying on any fixed charging but also battery swapping technology. Lift up the seat. Pull out the battery. Take it to your apartment or if you can't get you know if you have to leave your bike somewhere else plug it in next morning. Probably back in off you go. The company was founded in nineteen eighty-four formerly hero honda. Actually back in. In in the six plants they make eleven point six million scooters a year. That's just i'll say again. They make eleven point. Six million units in india every single year. That market is so big they have six thousand dealerships and of course they will have the staff and the infrastructure to be rolling out electric scooters across india. What about super socco. The australia based super sakai v moto is the company..

"But truck they've already said it will not come to europe because it is well Many reasons to be cry roads but mostly it wouldn't possibly crash test with a pedestrian safety crash tests. So they're not gonna change the front design of it that sort of cheese wedge thing that would cut somebody in half wouldn't pass our eggs but overstates fine in the us now. The korean tech giant samsung has supplied tesla with av technology before like batteries and they will be supplying the pixel led headlamps developed by samsung. Going into future tesla's as well. But what about these cameras be really interested like if the story is true. Are they just going to go with it and hope that regulations in the next six months change to allow cameras samaras really hope so because if it's an option that you won't be able to give it a go. I mean the costs have half a steering wheel these days nice. Let's talk about the army warming up to electric vehicles in its fleet. The us army is waiting into the waters of electric vehicles. The industry stands ready to make it happen. But it's been difficult for experienced commercial supplies to convince the army to take the plunge says the website defense news dots come when it comes to combat vehicles like abrams tanks strike comeback vehicles and the bradley infantry fighting vehicles. I'm not sure we're going anytime soon. Full electrics as brigadier general. Glenn dean the program. Executive officer for combat vehicles telling defense news dot com in an interview the gm proving ground where they were testing out different vehicles. He said the might prefer a hybrid option. Woefully electric combat vehicles might be a tough sell for the army tactical wheeled vehicle. Fleet might be a good place to stop they cite the defense division converted their infantry squad vehicle fully electric in a twelve week period as evidence of the possibility of things like tanks but other vehicles going electric. Well defense new says. Gm defense the that bit of general motors that sells to the army base. It's e. l. v. design off. It's hummer chassis. And they'll use the hammer bones. So two hundred kilowatt hour battery three motors thousand horsepower and offer a purely electric vehicle cool the l. rv based on a hama one option. Though is they could a of comfort. I understand this and again if you're in the army it's a big organization the idea of just changing your fleet all electric and of course you've got to charge them at every location. You're at simple as sticking some petrol in a jerrycan throwing a few of those in the back of a truck it would be possible to add a range. Extend like the bmw. I three range extender. So in other words the electric motors always power the wheels or the tracks or whatever but there is that backup option of running on combustion on fossil fuels eight. Smoking patch nicotine patch as one company battery engineer. Put it public defense news in the show notes if you want to read more. That's really interesting though. Isn't it the idea of The army going electric all of a sudden. You have to think about okay. There's lots of considerations that whether they're you know whether they're in combat or just running their fleet vehicles in whatever country that you are talking about very interesting. Let's talk about volvo next and their electric brand pollstar. And they're going to release a series of documentary series on that precept. Now the precept is then next sedan saloon vehicle very low very sleek very concept car at the moment so again dole handle stuff like that. But this'll be a wants to be up against the likes of mercedes-benz zeke. Us tesla model s etc etc. Now the precept from pollstar with slated for full-scale production by the end of this year was it but it won't be happening until two thousand twenty three staying true to that pledge of transparency though they're gonna make youtube documentary series to chronicle that process of designing a concept car making prototypes and bringing it to full production in an endeavour to reveal the elements that go into how you what they call eight a product and develop it into an electric car says the website future car dot com. The first episode is online and was revealed last week offering only three minutes adequate. Look behind the scenes. Look at different views. It's not particularly in depth. nothing controversial. Of course it's up documentary made by the people that it's meant to flatter but it still. Does they talk to one of the designers of the the door handles which are completely flat old. Maybe their self presenting and he was saying well. You know they'll be some precious to move to stand door handles but i'll fight tooth and nail to have these because they flat aero they look gorgeous and so it's worth a view and also subscribe to the channel and bring you any worthy updates. Postal has not revealed. The text of the precept yet. It'll obviously have jewel motoo. It'll be all wheel drive four hundred plus miles because you're going to go up against that kind of car in that territory then you have to go up against other flagships. I'll puzzling to show in. Shannon is to future call. If you wanna have a look at that youtube video new n i you knew is launching a new electric kick. Scooter called the k. q. I three and it's going to cost three hundred thirty nine pounds. That's what four hundred dollars. Ish that's super cheap for a kick. Scooter they are an electric mobility company that got scooters on the market already and launching then new scooter in the uk today thirteenth july. It's on indie gogo. I've registered on indigo. And i've added my email address to the mailing list now as of me recording this midday on tuesday. It wasn't live But of course his indigo goes. Us site so maybe again rewind a few hours time difference. That campaign wasn't live. As i looked at it but if indeed the campaign does go live and it is on sale for three hundred thirty nine pounds for the early buds. I might take a punt even though they're illegal at the minute. Because i think the rules and regs are going to change by the time they ship this. Because it's a it's a to type project. I might be waiting six or nine months. I don't know. I can't see the campaign. It's not live yet then. I'm pretty confident. They may be at least legal in some areas so much on the actually because it's a reasonable amounts of money for a vehicle that will go nineteen miles which is really good for a scoots. Fifteen point five miles now and it's slightly faster in the eu compared to the us full. John taking five hours it's foldable. They call it. The ultimate commutes escooter. And i really want to try and move my journeys that Less than a couple of miles over to electric bikes electric scooters and too often jump in the car to go get a pint of milk. Will you know some more coffee for the next morning. Awesome brekke and stuff like that and even taking little one to nursery which is a couple of miles away a little bit too far to walk for his legs by should be doing on an electric bike when you know permits and which is pretty much most days if you're dressed right so i need to get out of the habit of in the car. Obie an electric car. Since the formation of neo in two thousand fourteen they've sold one point eight million scooters in forty eight countries so i've got my worries about them fulfilling this even though it's a chronic crowdfunding kind of deal next A study on vs is looking at when the majority of these will be on sale and kelley. Blue book says that twenty thirty three is the date that has been reported by a new study by twenty forty five reaches research say entitled combustion will be completely gum. The predictions come from consulting firm. Unst young e. y. Their mobility lens forecast looking at a mural network we're using neural network sounds really complicated to predict when kashima behavior regulatory trends tech eve lucien and manufacturers strategies will combine to make vs ubiquitous and ernst and young say that latest predictions site two thousand nine hundred twenty eight in europe twenty thirty three in china and twenty thirty six in the. Us will be driving okay. Well they've used artificial intelligence system to predict that covid nineteen pandemic contributes significantly to their predictions. They say because people who rejected personal ownership of vehicles of reconsidered with the safety issues around public transport. She's a row shyam hoping people do continue to use public transport. I'm not in a in a situation where i need particularly you know where we are not living in a big area but i hope people still do and that it's safe and that's a better way to move people around big urban areas and finally we'll talk about the german election just for a second. I think it's interesting isn't it. Germans upcoming germany's upcoming general elections going to be in september. There's a big debate going on around vs an all around the politics. And what's a vote winner and what's not and whether these have a future in the birth country of the automobile given the size and status of germany's car industry many steps are underway to go to more sustainable transport and it's being contested within the politics of germany in industry and the wider society as well and lobbyists are in full steam ahead mode at the moment. Looking at september's general election gemini boasts more than eight hundred thousand direct automotive jobs. Four times as many as europe's number two. Which is france. The home to volkswagen audi porsche mercedes benz. Bmw noise important. Export items of their cars and the industry is a pillar of the economic success so says the clean energy one dot org website. The spread of vs has been slow in comparison. An increasing number of countries have put an end date here in the uk with twenty thirty for pure combustion cows but long range plugging hybrids are allowed but nine years away change more and more may announce their own phase out dates as well geminis car industry association is called the d. And you won't be surprised to hear. They are strongly opposing a focus on electric cars on a. But i'm not surprised to hear that the lobby group insists the german car industry themselves insists combustion engines on the problem but the fossil fuels are. That's a bit like the gum and bullet debate. Isn't it vehicles for a tech neutral approach rather than in politics. We're going to have just saying let's be tech neutral. Which does sound wonderful doesn't it. But until you realize. Millions of people die from lung. Disease and pollution related illness. Tech neutral. doesn't sound so nice now does it. They want investment hydrogen and synthetic fuels. They can carry on the way they always have done in the past. I don't think that's such a great idea. Exactly shower themselves in glory over the last few years have they. The german car industry and those are making a move to electric to change their reputation right. The wrongs the likes of vw. On always the ones that also echoing the car industry associations rhetoric often vw lately have broken from the german car industry and applauding their own. "Against the perceived wisdom of young people are into new technology and that people in their twenties and thirties the ones buying electric vehicles while those in their forties next on the list and then those in their sixties next on the list soap forty pluses in south korea. The majority of those buying electric vehicles. Those with maybe the money to do it because vs expensive. But dispelling the myth. The owning the young people are interested in innovation and new technology. Corporate purchases. were about five thousand of the vehicles about a third of the total people in the forties. The biggest buys of imported ev. So those not made in south korea but the likes of every other evey. It was people in their forties buying imported cars. But there's a big caveat to the story According to the data is coming from the korea automobile importers and distributors association but that data does not include tesla if you look to et. They sold almost twelve thousand vehicles in south korea last year. But tesla is not a member of the association. Like over here. We have the society of motive factors and traders Organization the argues to regulate this government on behalf of their members. Everyone is a member but tesla annoyed they used to be. "It's going to reduce the sailing. Time between portsmouth and franz from five hours again pompey. Franz is not the most the reef you're going to get to the from the uk to the eu you had to dover and that is the shortest crossing in terms of the narrowest of the english channel is the bit where the tunnel that goes underneath as well. Let's the shortest crossing. But like i've got Condor ferries. hey where. I'm in pool. They got onto jazzy and guns and simpson is. Obviously one of the country's biggest ports and portsmith is a big seafaring city as well. Now see gliders being developed using technology known as wing in ground and it's the reason why battery powered boats could work involves riding on a cushion of air you trump the of between the wing and the surface of the water. Like how an aircraft. A hovercraft renzo. That's the best wreckage describe. It says sci-fi focus magazine. The top speed is one hundred and eighty miles per hour. Minimum powell is needed because you reducing the friction between the boat and the water so here we are battery power. We're told batteries and no good for boats and planes and you need to hydrogen. And it's never going to do it with the battery rather than thinking about just putting batteries in the existing going. Actually what about if we use this technology which is established already but we scale up and we have this technology working on battery power. All of a sudden we've got five zero emission marine transport in badly needed at preity pretty dirty pot of the the english channel around here. You can take the diesel in the water. It is I think isn't the english channel. The world's busiest shipping line as in. It's very very narrow and very busy on. Let's talk about the world's most powerful electric outboard motor pushing for a wealth speed record back in may vision. Marine technologies opened reservations for the electric emotion. It's the one. Eight t outboard motor. Now get vermilion outboard motors. Because i live down by apollo local pool. Where there's lots of marinas hit. I see lots of people using that boats at the weekend. Lot of a couple of my neighbors have their boats in the driveways A lot of them are mold. So again i although i i do a very small bits of sailing i am. I spend a bit of time down by the coast and the smell of those outboard motors and just any boats when they're moving. You got to look at these wonderful craft imagining something like this and then and then you smell them and you go well that stinks the electric one. It is the world's most powerful electric outboard and it could soon become the fastest teaming up with a miami company. The hell cats the powerboats in an effort to push all electric power to one.

"They expect to hit fifty five percent by twenty thirty and that's leading into one of the stories. We'll talk about later on the podcast and something. I've talked about lots over the years. California the e u. China all of them things with the rules and rigs which means that. Evf option has happened to a different pace than if you'd left up to market forces now a big fan of leaving things up to market forces because we know even as an only better but also cheaper to run and then when i tell people about electric call drive one i talk about my running costs to them. They're like well. That makes more sense right. So i don't need to do the hard sell on ebay as an than if you are. The same people just tend to discover them and go visa fall better and then they buy one but they do need at times subsidies incentives and indeed the lawmakers to make sure that they are pushing things along one of the things that the e u did walls put co two emissions rules in place and that meant that the comic has had to hit a certain level of co two emissions across the entire fleet of cars that they salt now by doing that. They forced the hand of the car. Makers now again. You can argue amongst yourselves whether it is a good or bad thing us. The thing i've slightly biased. But we'll get onto a story about that a little bit but that would be amazing. Twenty thirty sixty percent reduction twenty thirty five. A hundred percent reduction aka emissions free would be amazing and because the eu is such a big market. Like when i talk about the united states in the us and china as well if you're gonna make a cough or sutton market you might as well sell everywhere. There's no point being a hold out so that will also lead onto another story. We're talking about today. I though we'll talk about vw's electrify america doing dale with mercedes benz in the usa electrify america announcing an agreement with mercedes benz to provide drivers of the s. Of course the top end s class equivalent complimentary charging two years electrify america. Not quite the same. As the deals we've seen with the id full though and the vw deals because includes thirty minutes of charging per session. I wonder if you can just unplug and plugging again for another thirty minutes. I wonder how many ecus owners even need free charging the point is it removes friction and it makes things easy. "Today we're joined by an av adventurer who you may know from driving the mongol rally in a nissan leaf a few years ago. But it wasn't enough for this adventure. So now he's taking on the biggest adventure of a lifetime and something. Nobody's actually ever done before driving an electric vehicle from pole to pole driving from the south pole to the north pole. Over twelve thousand seven hundred miles. It's a drive. That will require a very special evi to handle extreme temperatures found at the poles but also the hot temperatures as he crosses the equator. I'm joined today of my friend. Nicholas ray i e v nick as we jointly interview. Chris about this epic adventure. Enjoy this evening. We're going to talk about your next question which you have kept so close to your chest. Eight for a while. you've not said anything. Then you've said. I've got something in the works. But i don't jinx. I'm just looking at talk about it and then eventually you're able to say. How long has this trip being in the in the planning stage and how you can announce it now Well i mean started with this. I mean the map you see behind me is is actually on my wall. This is currently agrees game but is actually my bedroom wall. Many inspiration adventures kind of come from just staring at that map And so pole to pole came by not long afteh. The manga rally and of looking at the next thing. I can do to follow on the educational message around electric vehicles. Despite amiss so ray in a nutshell is being in the planning Shy of four years. And it's it's nearly been announced prior to covid because quite happy to say it's we were we were gonna be nizing prior to the embassy. Cova came cayman. That put a a lotta damper on the works for everybody and obviously this expedition. Doing this kind of stuff is nowhere near important than people's safety and saving lives so No complaints in any way shape or form so But we kind of said right. Okay what do we do now. We can go back to the drawing board. Allowed us to look at other honest New things that we can do an expand on what we were going to be doing this Hold the educational message working with governments and ngos on. Yeah we got to the here thought right now. It's time where things are starting to come out of people's businesses assigned to look at look at sponsoring non. Kiss without a big part of how we're managing to do this So we thought right time right to kind of let people know what we're doing that might follows no One of two names..

"Benz have launched the e. Qb that third electric model this year ramping up there on the electric car It's an suv. It was shown at the shanghai auto show that was really busy this year. Actually there's loads more to come from it. It's seven seats well up to seven seats but all the specs that The picks you see how the seven seats in store the day. Nearly a week after mercedes benz unveiled the q. S this of course much cheaper car than the s class equivalent according to the detroit bureau the mercedes e. qb's dimensions are identical to the g. l. b. butts like the rest of the mckee family. The new model has batteries. And they've put them down low and a skateboard like design butts. If you do lift up the bonnet the heard of the qb as i saw one of the The youtube channel had look underneath. And there's a lot of stuff in there and no funk so a lot of stuff's been moved out of the cabin to make a lot of passenger room but saying that the back two seats they got the ice affixed points for baby seats. They really off a kids if you go. Grown adults in the second row than the third row is way too much of a squeeze for anyone but kids of the new model has the new mercedes benz. Navigation with intelligence is the official corporate. Name of that is how they integrating charging driving your life getting to your destination navigation and where you're going to charge and by all accounts. This is the system is used using the us. And my buddy kyle. Who's sniff around the us in the us. I must say Hey says it works. It looks like it will work very very well because they've spent a huge amount of time trying to integrate the charging which of course tesla i think do best because tesla the cars they own the well you you on the you know what i mean by that. Some would argue with that but what we test tesla dipping in turning off people's charging a thing but anyway in theory you own the cop. I'm on the charging network and anything. That really is the trinity. They they buy in. But it's so vertically. Integrated is the best charging experience. A lot of people who have tested off. Say oh do you ever just make sure that it starts charging they're like no. I don't even wait for the green light. I just pull up to the take. Take it off the handle off the show..

"But for now the rain still being quoted in any dc three hundred and sixty five miles and two hundred and seventy one miles for the two different battery sizes again a very big car full of technology over the chinese market. And i'm guessing it's probably going to sell rather well that next. We'll talk about tesla dropping lawsuit against a former employee. This is really interesting too big on this. Because it's kind of internal politics. But the chinese av make expon announced. The tesla dropped their lawsuit against one of its former employees. Now the suit was fest followed in twenty nine teen with the northern california. Us district court for theft of ip intellectual property related to autopilot all the autonomous driving systems. That tesla uses not specifically also pilot which the product name they use a former employee. Left tesla went to x. pong and hides Uploaded some files to that personal cloud rather than i gather a work system And also after they resigned. Have a work laptop for A period of time and over the past couple of years. They've been allegations. It'd be for cafeterias a lawsuit. I want Not the receiving end of either of that so But over the last couple of years they'd been allegations that x. peng had somehow stolen tesla autopilot and of course as soon as as soon as elon. Musk weighed in on any topic. Not just this but I can't recall the exact tweets that he says what misquote him The tesla fan base piling is obviously. They must have stolen everything expert expert said. Look you need to follow up on the suits and do something about it. They never made the actual coal company policy to the lawsuit. I need to the individual and there's been a two years of Of extensive work going on and from what i can gather zero substantial evidence to support any allegation or in new endo aimed at the chinese company that full. The suit has been completely dropped. And that's an important thing because we don't want to be talking about things like ip when it comes to chinese companies. It's pretty hot topic. And if you invent something you wanna make sure the credit for it and someone isn't doing anything they shouldn't be and in this case nobody did next. I'll talk about neo presenting the next generation battery swap station chinese evening. Make a neo as unveiled the next gen a battery shopping station You can do three hundred and twelve battery swaps a diet. Which is amazing isn't it. Of course he won't go. It won't suit everywhere in every part of the world. But there's certainly bits of china where battery swapping is really useful. And there's so many benefits to as well like you just pull up an encyc- six or seven minutes. You have a fully charged battery The the batteries wants out of your car can be charged slowly not. Dc repechage is good for health. They can be checked all the cells Checks the battery going into your car is is good. The battery is owned by. Uc's paying a small amount per month to lisa the battery and of course the dimensions. The external dimensions of the same size says battery technologies improved to the battery packs of actually got bigger in capacity. Lots of reasons why it works for them and their doesn't work everywhere is business model But really fascinating. The the they continue to improve. There's those battery swap stations where they done automatically. There's two hundred thirty two hundred and thirty nine cents. I think in each station. And it's a completely kind of self service battery swap you pull in. It's one click and you stay in your car and the system like i say three hundred and twelve battery swaps in a in a in a day. That's really efficient way of of of getting new energy in your even if you can't charge home okay. So the opportunity charging next. We'll talk about bmw. And the x. the i three. I should say which is their electric version of the x three The fos- charging analysis has been done the first version of the x three with its let me get eighty kilowatt hour battery on wwl. Cpi does they give a range to eighty two to eighty five miles as four fifty. Four fifty eight kilometers bmw says that charging to eighty percent takes thirty four minutes now the charging network fast net. A love this. They tend to release charts of what they've seen from people plugging in cars to that charging work. I love it. They share a lot of data the bmw. I extremely strong at one. Hundred and fifty seven kilowatt charge speed. That's really good. Then he steps down in increments rather than being a slow curve as the battery fills up. The speed goes down in terms of the charge. There's big steps which is not how the cell chemistry of of the battery works Cells have a sudden step downing In in power they can take the battery management system. They're doing what is right in the engine in their engineers opinion full maximum efficiency longevity and and charging speed and all kind of things so multiple steps down rather than one nice curve is about tree as the battery Ending about fifty kilowatts might be undoing. Eighty to ninety five percent which you can still really really quick big buffer going on with the x three really interesting to see i thank you for sharing the data and that is your news for today right question of the week. We were talking about on question of the week whether you think av companies need a high profile figure ahead in order to attract attention. Lee brown in scotland says elon. Musk is the master of pr. And that's where tesla don't need a press departments without a loan. The speed of transition to evs and clean energy wouldn't be as quick so love him or them wareham a data gratitude any other. Ceo that would try and copy at. How he operates would be exactly that copycat. Alan does enough for all of them already and shows no sign of slowing down next. We'll talk about rich. In chapel hill. We have enough of a problem with demagoguery in modern society These days just make a wide variety of the cows available. Make them cost-competitive a bunch of pseudo ilan's tossing out verbal hand-grenades fa- clicks doesn't help anything mark. Arca said i think elon. Musk his personality. The vehicles that he's making responsible for creating excitement around vs. However i think other ceos behaving similarly would create skepticism with people more interested in cars as just a practical part of their life. Who are probably the majority of. Cobb is toyota's practicality and sales numbers would be testimony to that raj narayan says we leave linda tie when there are many who would be best south by any who'd i realized that in times like these via doctrine benefits from cheerleaders like an alone. And look at what. Tiger woods did for the popularity of the sport of golf. That being said we don't need every car company..

"That ibm w i. X three gets is charging analyzed. We have the new volkswagen six. Of course your own says to question of the week we'll be revealed. Good morning off evening wherever you're listening in the world. Welcome to abc news daily for sunday. Eighteenth of april. My name is martin li every story. So you haven't got a so. Yeah we'll kick off for that story about ferrari then and for a long time. Ferrari said nope no visa happening. La fingers in is absolutely. Hey you however for are they going to launch their first all electric supercar surprise surprise if they want to stay relevant and so road counts in the future. All comic is going to have to make fully electric cars. The role of petrol in the future is obviously up in the and they one knows where we go motoracing with it. Will it be classic cars. Will that be one or two percent left using fuel. Probably i think the most likely situation but everything in terms of how we get around and have fun. That's going to be electric now. Ferrari writing. I want to be on the market by twenty twenty five which is pretty quick if i've already started in terms of cobb development terms but even then that'd be six years after the porsche tycoon. On the audi e tron gt and the gts of akasa. Very sexy and probably in the same price. point Two days ago the ceo. John elkin revealed news about the first trick. Ferrari at the annual shareholders meeting for decades ferrari rejected the idea of a fully electric supercar says investor's business daily of investors dot com the former c. Who sadly along with us. Sergio cioni declared ferrari ferrari. Ev an almost obscene concepts. Of course we are gone back a couple years. Now i guess when vs one tons of performance wise maybe where they are now but still great news to see a a brand like ferrari adding towards electrification but by twenty twenty five. It's going to be some amazing amazing vs there. The the new lotus which is got those crazy specs as the verena batista. It's gonna say. Many high-performance avis out there. So really looking forward to seeing what he's on the market Sooner or later and the first full electric ferrari. And i do i feel for someone like ferrari who for so long of bill that brian on the theater of a car and a lot of that is the sound and the noise and you know maybe not the vibration suddenly the visceral experience of driving a car and gear changes and things like that. So there's going to be clearly some unhappy people about fully. Electric ferrari now are vs bets. A in every way of course we know that. However it's gonna be a tough sell on some people fully prepared for that spots. We'll wait and see next. We'll talk about chinese firms entering the european market. I spotted an article today The the guardian on sundays called the observer newspaper and it was a mark of respect from the tesla chief. Executive says the observe of that. He has been admiring his competition. The chinese manufacturer neo just made its one hundred thousand electric car and mr. Musk offered his congratulations. Tesla mania and cheap money have pushed market. Valuations are a bunch of comic to astonishing levels as a tesla's value topping eight hundred and thirty billion dollars at six hundred billion pounds in january. It's down but it's still three times the size of something like toyota. The next biggest. Come up but there's chinese rivals the likes of nia ex peng liotta the big names in china wm motor all having a great time and making great vs at the moment. Some of them now. No some of them want to focus on that time. Mock it because there's plenty of sales to go there but some of them do i west and if not the us then at least the european market so can they enter it. That's the discussion. The observer has today up up link in the show notes. If you want to read more about that it's one of our weekend long reads that we'd like to recommend they talk about how well the byu have done. Of course you mentioned byu if you're writing a newspaper article about them without mentioning their investment from warren buffett back in two thousand and eight and also how well tessler of done incidentally and how well. They've conquered china so far they give a big mentioned ex- peng with the sports sedan. The p five guy from As well and those things like the neo eighty seven and the tesla model y. Oh getting lots of praise in this article next We will talk again about one of these fascinating stories to do with. Who's gonna making a vs in the future. we'll be partnerships that we just couldn't dream of right now in terms of the established order. If you like well one thousand five hundred firms worldwide have signed up for hong highs. Av platform a total of fifteen hundred firms of set their sights on making an with an open platform promoted by the taiwanese menu ring manufacturing giant. That could haunt high got hung high precision company known as foxconn in the global market. They've been promoting their own open platform since last year. And so far one thousand. Five hundred hardware and software companies around. The world have participated in development of the platform. And this is something that other people can come along and take the basic bed bones of what they need to build on so the crush structure at the bat tree battery managements and then probably all four corners as well and by that i mean so you know. Wheels breaking suspension As well and and then build on top of that platform and don't underestimate the power of the company that makes the iphone. They know how to put things together next. Accompany that definitely knows how to make. A great is volkswagon on the third model in that. Id family now. The auto show in shanghai which of course is on we all talking about the vw. Id six it joins. The id three and the four in the range. Six is a different beast. It's really big. It's a proper seven seater unless face is designed for the chinese market goes on sale. Later this year in two different versions. There's going to be a coupet styled crawls and there's going to be the six x and that's because vw actually has to companies in china to joint ventures once called as a vw. One is called f. a. w. and they're gonna make different versions of the cop the ceo of the also. I can brand ralph branch that hopefully that correct sir. This i quote with a new. Id six we allowing the foundations. For at least fifty percent of our sales sold in china to be full electric in two thousand thirty we all maintaining momentum and gradually increasing a range of because by twenty by twenty twenty twenty three vw a total of eight id monitoring in china making the m. e. d. a. m. e. b. platform nationwide van and so again the chinese specs still reported on the any dc test cycle. Which is wildly optimistic. They all meetings wwl. Vp simon's the rest of the world apart from the us searches epa So that will give us a better sense.

"Have to mercedes-benz about to unveil any flagship e. s boasting market-leading battery range following through on. Its pledge to compete in the luxury electric vehicle segment with top technology. It's going to be pro fifteenth for the u. s. We'll see a few shots on the outside inside before then but amok milestone for the and brand has been. I think rightfully criticized for being slow on the uptake to bring me to market mercedes making eight full electric cars on three continents says the marcus schaeffer in a phone interview and writing blue bug dot com today the four hundred and thirty five miles or seven hundred kilometers of range from us which will be done again on the european test cycle so maybe slightly less i guess for the the epa in the us will give tesla a bit of a headache because they've dominated the space for range the range of the us would exceed that of the long range muddle s and of course coming soon. We'll have lucid with that at doing. Five hundred and seventeen miles then the model s. plaid plus five hundred and twenty miles. How have you look this whether you want to make this a fight between certain comedy. Because i'm always came to go down the route of of of being the one that pitches these calls against each other. I just think they'll be fans of mercedes fans of high end cars. And i know i upset tesla fans when i say that they're not high end cars other other world's best. Ev engineering. And i think the world's best software. I'll make the argument to Old along the Not the world's best luxury 'cause they're nice places to be inside but the people the augie tesla's luxury cars often find have not been inside luxury and with all respect. They're the people who are spending a hundred and twenty grand on a car right neither am i so i'm not saying that i. I'm buying cars like that. Just saying the people that go all well know mercedes. We've got no challenge. Because tesla goes further. Don't discount the buyers out that who have one hundred one hundred twenty grand to spend on a luxury car. Who by the way who don't think less is more. I know that the philosophy of let's take everything out one screen hoffa steering wheel. There are plenty of people out there who don't think less is more. They think more is more and this mercedes-benz curious which by the way is the electric equivalent of an s class. It needs to be amazing. It needs to be full luxury. It needs to be when that door slams shut with a german thud the only they can. Do you need to feel like you know you spend a million pounds on that kite to sit inside and nba absolutely wild. I think they will. Because i was inside. Or is it the mercedes benz e. qc recently that they're even and even that. Which is that will be a step down to it. S class in terms of luxury. Even that was a really really nice place to be inside again from the perspective. Not the best buy treat tech not the best efficiency and range etc this. Us just needs to compete in terms of the tech side. An if a smash it with the luxury. I think then you know lucid will suddenly have competition and i would say test competition but but really if these s clause buyers had wanted to go electric by now they would have done so they would have bought stuff was a model s. So i don't know. I think he's widens the market. Not cannibalize is the mock-ups so excited about luxury. Cars like this. Not own one on excited about it right next. Dhl launching one hundred new lightning electric vans delivery vans in the us dhl express continue to make investments in the electric van fleet following a successful initial pilot program using nine lightning electric ford transit electric vans in the us last year. Buses passenger van chassis cab models city transit buses motorcoach stuff like that next. We'll talk waymo that providing a look inside. Self-driving truck testing electric vehicles and autonomy tend to go hand in hand and waymo is interesting. That big purchase of jaguar electric. I pace is now that putting that technology inside trucks on public roads and for the price they did a Unveiling event on march twenty fourth and they had a close aide tractor with all of the waymo. Self-driving stuff in operating around phoenix. There was a drive behind the wheel but the truck worked autonomously lane changes merging with traffic negotiating traffic as well passenger cars motorcycles large commercial trucks. Jack you're all electric passenger cars recently and have now put on that trucking platform interesting to say when they do that. What's electric trucks. The us next we'll talk about. Byu the recently renamed yuan av is becoming the on pro and they gave it a more modern front similar to the han. Ev its all electric. Of course it's available to ordering china. Comes they fifty kilowatt blade battery. Four hundred one kilometers of course is any dc which they still use kind of you know almost have it interesting side note. I say this on the podcast already china this summer. A moving the wwl. Tcp way of measuring range. Moving away from dc which is long overdue so the the range chinese vehicles give i think from june july will be much more accurate now. The d d. One is another car from daiwa d. And the han alongside the d. one. We'll be more popular. I would say than the you. On pro- the newly renamed it's because the d one is basically a vw golf. I mean i'd vw. Id sanca Well it was initially aimed car-sharing services but now available for private buys as well. It's about twenty thousand euros if you do the price comparison anyway. Byod have got a ton of electric car. offerings says. Pedrick push av loads of options in china but some of them will be making their way to other markets europe. Us australia and production capacity is growing very very fast. They currently the the smallest electric car model. The y d e one still has the old style battery with cobol in the ncaa. Chemistry all the models upgraded l. fbi. Lithium iron phosphate battery cells and they use seltzer pack technology so byu blade battery which gets a load of loving. The headlines is redoing the business for them and just keeps expanding but again it gets. China doesn't make a huge amount of news. I've next the top six electric cars coming to australia this year. "If you look at the vehicles online You can pick up a small battery one like an old one for about fifteen grand here in the uk in van in twenty four kilowatt hour van outfit. It's a panel van as well also cbs's seven or eight seats in the envy two hundred but look the nuance with the big battery. The forty kilowatt hour battery going full by the look of it. Twenty seven twenty eight grand very useful. Great great levine. Of course it charges on chatham. Oh and it's one of those. I think great little products that was ignored for too long by its parent company so the reynaud necessitates bitchy alliance is taking. The philosophy of h. One of those brands are going to be. The leader for certain vehicles and the other brands will follow. We'll have sista vehicles if you like. So they'll be more based on these new platforms. They sent a token about okay. Let's move on. Vw's vulcan ceo not the brand vw hubbub. He's intimidated spy apple. Even though the tech company has an electric car on the way according to cnn votes wagner is aiming to be dominance in the ev field the company so two hundred and thirty one thousand six hundred eighty in twenty twenty according to figures published back in january by vw. Although that's less than half the number of tesla tesla did you nearest dammit. Plus minus a couple down the back of the cipher. Half a million in two thousand nine hundred twenty guidance is attested. Guidance is fifty percent growth which is low balling and everyone knows as well. And it's really weird thing to do because in tunnel targets about a million cars this year. For tesla so vw are playing catch up but they had two hundred and fourteen percent increase on the previous year. So the getting that now. This was a german publication that Interviewed him and he said and i quote the car. Industry is not a typical tech sector. That you could take over at a single stroke. Apple will not manage that's overnight and quotes very true them and they went to overnight butts. I wouldn't want to go up against apple because they any tend to do something when they are ready to really go for it and when they do you know that they are serious. I still come walk out what we're gonna do with. Why would apple mike. Why would apple get into cars which are full of boxes an oil and entire wear out and things and windscreen wipers that get replaced apple devices so slick and full gloss and and actually get replaced every couple of years. Why get into cost. It just seems. I can't get my head around it i can. I can understand apple providing the software to give you the apple experience and the sense of sweet so the cameras the right of the line and how that whole an and the autonomy but they on gonna. I can't see apple making a car. it's just like come making. It's just a business as well just goes against the much apple stands for and i you know an apple car is essentially branded apple. But made by you know because they didn't make their own phones fox and others make the actual devices. That would make more sense so that i can walk up to the apple car with my watch. My phone unlocks like in. I can carry on the conversation on the cole..

"The brand is establishing itself on the market with both vs but plug ins as well and we look zero those in two thousand and twenty one and then. Finally i'll pain is brand run. I had a huge amount lately making some really interesting. 'cause over the years but i'll pain and lotus jointly developing an electric sports car lotus or making the via which is one of those cars the ghost nor to sixty in a heartbeat and does about four thousand miles on our two hundred mile an hour time rather not sixty. Maybe the not to two hundred miles an hour. Time anyway lotus norfolk company. Where i'm from. So i have an affinity and the alpine. Lotus teams will do a study together. Some joint engineering designing developing sports cars. Four alpine by levering leveraging both every sources in france and at hatha in the uk. Alpine and lotus will also explore the development of joint services. A collaboration to leverage al pains motorsport platform. of course. they've remained the renault. F one team as of the first of january to the alpine f. One team which is funny because reynaud making a very big deal about the alpine brand going electric and yet to get their name out de had to rename that formula one team. A cobb will go around the world every weekend. Bunning rather lots of fossils and the little bit of electric in there as well with some region. Okay let's talk about how we need to focus on. Trucking and educate people about commercial vehicles are am i and nfl or announcing the third of their biannual trucking demonstrations. That could run on this. She is running on less. We'll we'll focus on electric trucking ten dedicated trucks and that drives reporting real time. Data show the current state aviv. Trucking technology in the industry has cleaned technica. The demonstration vehicles would include electric vans medium duty trucks and heavy duty. Trucks moving freight and a variety conditions in areas. In order to increase electric truck adoption and deployment vis run on less this year will help fleets and charging companies and utility companies. And policymakers get access to the data to better understand the benefits and challenges of hauling freight with batteries. Let's talk about the story. i mentioned. elliott tesla recall. Sorry tesla being asked to recall hundred and fifty eight thousand cars because of failures the national highway traffic safety administration. So it's a federal body the nitsa. Nhtsa is being asking tesla to recall one hundred fifty eight thousand model s and model x. cars because of the media control unit. This is the big touch screen that lives in the middle of the car and they're failing according to nick tesla doesn't do model is but nitsa dozen so they're giving it the twenty twelve to twenty eighteen more or less on the twenty six th two thousand eighteen model x. model years i was twelve thousand model s. An of how the finally happened so far and up nick colleague. Jason chizevsky reported back in november last year That it's a weirdly preventable. Issue tesla near that the flash memory card. They were putting in would fail at some point. They just miscalculated. How long it would take in the life cycle of the car now. One of the sponsors. That i mentioned every day on the podcast is richard simmons they buy and sell in the uk. But mostly tesla's been doing it for years real depth of knowledge. There remember speaking to him about this months and months ago saying that they have developed their own because it happens and people concerned about it. They've developed their own third party fix for this issue. People coming to them other wanting to buy a tesla having the work done before it goes wrong or coming to the not being bar. Cobb is and customers wanting advice or wanting that worked. They developed their own solution to this. It's a relatively easy solution but it's interesting that there is now a recall and and again a very careful because i noticed that this isn't the federal agency telling tesla you must do this by sutton date when i read. The report said we asking tested to do this by the looks of it's optional. I don't know what would happen if tesla don't that's probably an option because they said we're asking them rather than telling them or maybe i'm just getting lost in the weeds on that. And if they if they ask they've got to do it. Let's finish off with a story. About tesla adding some european dealerships expanding the number of stores and service centers in europe by third last year alone in preparation for the model. Y coming over automotive news. Europe tesla open forty new outlets in europe last year for a total of one hundred and sixty one here in the region. I say we know in europe anymore. a majority office sales and service tessler affirmed his promise to stop production of the model y at that new factory in berlin in july. Now i can't find the press release. This came from the report in automotive news europe. But that's the first time i've said maybe said before. That's the first time i've seen them say we will make model y in july in berlin they've always said q. To middle of the year or those kinds of things and being quite vague. I am still pinning on end of june beginning of july and so maybe tester openly saying now july i one of the few makers of electric cars actually here in europe in decline right now and it does tend to blow the tesla super fans minds when they'll macbeth feelings known to me on twitter and if i gently outlook i've ahead tessler is a brand. That is has had all their own way. And now there is a choice of other 'cause whilst the raw numbers on terrible and market share is is significantly in decline simply because there's so many other reviews to choose from but they are in decline hearing europe in the first eleven months of twenty twenty Down about eighteen percent they sold about sixty nine thousand five hundred vehicles up to the end of november. That's not the fully in number and it's not. The official numbers focused tests. That don't publish that. That's coming in automotive analysts could matisse schmidt so make of that what you will. I follow him on twitter and redesign articles. I write in very highly. Which is why. I give you the news on the podcast. So if the numbers were not exact it is going to be far away so very interesting. They'll do to to try and turn around the eighteen percent decline in europe. Of course the berlin gigafactory opening is going to be such a big deal as well because yes we do like across. Suv's here as much as anybody does around the world it seems So the model y will indeed be a big seller being made on the continent and hopefully that will do something for the prices because they are expensive to buy a tesla and if if people don't quite realize they sometimes i look at the the us dollar amounts and then converted to pounds. And can i go green with envy. It's an expensive car to buy over here. Of course there's the shipping also Importing them As well so. It's not like buying them in in the us It's much more affordable and used ones much more affordable in the us over here. they still because of supply. I have to wait for a ship to arrive the model threes. I did look a little while ago. early ones high mileage. Like thirty thousand and something like a new on his forty and a half like all right. "Per show and citron. Psa group recorded a great year in two thousand twenty for like electrified models. A hundred and twenty thousand and that's one of the reasons why met they european. Co two targets which my say of us having done at the same time. The french companies total sales slumped twenty seven point eight percents and a covid year as so many bad headlines carmakers put the one bright star has always been electric cars. According to electric the french concrete is planning a merge with fit chrysler and then not trying to merge the name and do some sort of frankenstein's monster kind of thing. No it's could still lantis happen. They try and crowbar in little bits of names and give everyone equal shad but out with the old in with the new sta lantis a falling back on three platforms really They in addition to the already known e. c. m. p. e. v. mp platforms. They are a base developed by it cries lodge electric cars now the moment. Psa offer seventeen electrified models that adding six more this year and some of those cars that have come out. I've been really impressed with things. Like the peugeot e to eight the ds which is call it a citron. It is the ds cross back eight ten very much. The same running gear in the power train underneath many of these calls but sort of tweaked slightly different specs all tweaked slightly different. Some of the vans coming out. Psa vans and big vans as well fifty kilowatt hour battery hundred kilowatt charging all very sensible and ovary available on sale now Which is the key thing with evasive staying in france. The reynaud five electric super mini seven fully. Electric vehicles will be launched in the next four years and one of them was previewed today. You re bone reynaud five also known as liquor in the united states the superman. Es back after being discontinued in nineteen ninety-six as motor one dot com reynaud labels the new five as a prototype concept so although this is that it is coming. The production version will arrive. It's not a kind of crazy design ideas. It's what we're gonna make this car. And here's the prototypes. I won't be wildly different from this. Really distinctive retro styling. There's a red stripe around the windows is the sort of drivers and back windows as it were a not to the hot hatch. Version the running five. Gt back in the night which may hint. as well. modern day evey counterpart could come also hearing that there's plans to bring back through four as well. Details are limited also blogs said viewed from the side the concepts silhouette echoes his predecessors with short front overhanging the c pillar slanted about forty five degrees relatively told vertical lights unmistakable. Not to the The super sink the fives smaller. While the emblem placed on the passenger side of the hatch creates a visual link between the two cars that we didn't expect to find out back. It's inspired by the reynaud five and the grill. The place. the renter logo next to the driver's side headlight. So we're really excited about this. I'm always excited about small cars anyway. I'm excited about anything. That's a use case. I'm really kind of bored by coming out and the car makers trying tick all the boxes which is all well and good. It's nice when they erasing. Vienna carries fourteen people and does not sixty in one second. It'll go million miles an hour for about four thousand miles and it's on the spec. Wars are nice. But i'm just kind of down with it. I'm just a love cars that fit for purpose and use case as well so i like small cheap cars and vans and commercial vehicles going electric so many really exciting things happening happening a few years ago. And so yeah. This is a great example of a car. Which is going to be for everybody. It will hold around probably four maybe five people at a pinch when you have to otherwise it will be used for families doing errands and being renault. It's going to be cheaper. And you know thinking about the cause in the segment. Honda a mini cooper. Se fear five hundred. Roll around thirty grand vega. Be ten grand more expensive than this. This car is is kind of swimming in the same pool is the likes of the persian e. Two eight and the reynoso. Is this going to replace their is zoe 'cause he's going to be in a couple of years time. By which time the as any fifty. It'll be a little bit long in the tooth or will it replace the twin going. Well we'll wait and see whatever happens really excited about reynaud confirming that they're gonna make seven electric cars new ones between now and twenty twenty-five but this is one of the ones that is just it's bags of style and you know what i mentioned this on the inside eve as video podcasts that i do with the guys and you can watch on the inside vs youtube channel. If you haven't seen it yet i do the ivory friday i mentioned to them you know i think that so. Many carmakers have realized they have so much in the heritage that they can play on the startups. Don't have that. So the startups have to come out of the blocks with great technology and name for themselves and they are if you look at the likes of the biggest names tesla obviously arguably still a startup but has been through that process and then you got the others lucid and rivi and countless others in china and so many more as well all starting for standing stone having to create a brand. I think a lot of the the the the comic is that four or five years ago was saying wahl when we choose to make vs. We're going to be We'll show the rest of them. How it's done. We'll look people have been eating their lunch. And i think so. Many have been used by how good some of these startups are. And that's without even the chinese companies coming to western markets. Yeah really and so. What is interesting is how these companies have been around one hundred years or way more in the case of a peugeot and renault looking at the heritage and saying actually we can create some emotion around this. And i get that. Sometimes there's a little bit of lacking emotion in the high tech of ease and so great. Let's hark back to the past. Let's let's create some of the emotion through classic and future classic ev- as as well a really really like what they're doing. I think it'd be a great way as well for many people to buy into electric cars by by giving them a sense of solidity by comparing them to cause that maybe ran for twenty twenty-five thirty years production runs in the past that many people grew up with parents. Had they remember from their childhood. So i think it's a really really cool thing. Hey token eye by the way they have doubled. Their sales in europe on the european electric market reynaud doubled sales and confirm their leadership. One hundred fifteen one hundred sixteen thousand pure electric vehicles. Zoe is the best selling electric car. It's up one hundred and fourteen percent this year. Well twenty twenty two..

sixty fourteen people two thousand china five people europe six Honda youtube fifty two cars five hundred Psa today france one hundred and fourteen perce fifty kilowatt one second hundred kilowatt reynaud five
