What's happening at the protests in Myanmar?

"Maybe we should just start with where we are today so we're recording this uk. Time on tuesday morning. We're about a week out from the code. What's your understanding of. The current situation is on the first of february army took over arrested. The president's in the de facto head of government on succi said that they were acting within the emergency provisions of the constitution. They said that they would hand back. Power after holding elections within a year's time since then protests have been growing every day. They've spread around the country in several different towns and cities over the past forty eight hours. We've seen massive protests in the biggest city former capital. Rangoon may be hundreds of thousands of people on the streets yesterday yesterday evening. The government put out new regulations. And this morning. They also blocked major intersections and bridges as well in the city so the protests i think have become smaller but they have continued at in naypyidaw the capital. We're getting the first reports that someone may have been killed in altercations between protesters and the security forces. So it's a very very fluid time. We don't know what momentum the protests have they seen bay determined people seem incredibly energized in their desire to oppose takeover by the military. But we don't know what's going to happen because this is an army after all that's crushed many uprisings and demonstrations in the past. So we'll come onto what might come next In a bed. But what's your best understanding of why now so the ostensible reason that's been given is unhappiness about the elections but the elections were in november. So why february. So the elections were in early november around the same week as a. Us elections the commander in chief. The head of the army who turned sixty five. This year is meant to retire. I think he had thought that he might have a chance of of becoming the president after the elections. I think he had hoped that the pro army party the union solidarity and development party usdp would do reasonably well as well as many ethnic minority parties. Were contesting the elections as well when they didn't do well when the nfl the party amongst says suci a landslide. Victory the army. I said they would recognize and respect. The results but in december came increasing allegations from the us dp side of massive electoral fraud. And the army commander in chief and others in the army latched onto that and demanded an investigation that call for an investigation was rejected by the union election commission and that led in january two demands by the army that there'd be a special session of parliament to discuss these allegations that was also rejected by the speaker of the lower house of parliament that was followed by ultimatum and parliament the new parliament the newly elected parliament was meant to sit on the first february and the ultimatum was the weekend before the ultimatum past attempts back and forth reaching compromise that failed in the army seized power just on the on the eve of parliament sitting and the promise now is of new elections within the next twelve months so what reason is that i think that the outcome would be any different unless the elections themselves setup in such ways to guarantee a different outcome given what happened in november given the result would elections at any point in the next twelve months produce a different results. It's very difficult to say that they would. I mean the analogy won a landslide. I think with the army takeover. If anything else has g is more popular than ever strength of feeling against other militaries very high. I think the the pro army party would do even worse if elections were held today or unit. In years time. I think a couple of different sort of possibilities. I mean one is that you know. Assess has now been charged with illegal. Possession of walkie talkies communications equipment. That carries i think maximum prison sentence of three years. One thing would be that they would keep her under house arrest for this period through the next elections which is what they did back in. The army did back in twenty ten when elections were held than the other. Possibility is that they would disband the analogy. The other might be that they hold fresh elections and count on the d. says gee boycotting those elections. They're different possibilities. There's also the possibility that they might try to change the electoral system from first past post system to a proportional representation system in which case smaller parties including the ethnic minority parties. Might do better than they might think that they would have a better chance because the army has an automatic hold on twenty five percent of the seats so they actually just need allied parties to to win twenty five percent up to choose the president and a new government

Trump pressures Georgia top election official to 'find' votes and overturn Biden victory in phone call

"Start then with the Washington Post newspaper because they have made public a recorded telephone conversation in which President Trump is heard putting pressure on Georgia's top election official to overturn his defeat in the state. President elect Joe Biden won the state 11,779 votes. Now, in the hour long call between Mr Trump on Brad Raffles Burger, Georgia's secretary of state, Mr Trump made a number of unsubstantiated claims of vote rigging. I mean, they noticed him to find the one extra vote that would give him a victory. Well, I want to do is this I just wanna find 11,780. Votes, which is one more that we have. Because we want to say so. So tell me. Red. What are we going to do? We won the election and it's not fair to take it away from us like this. On. It's going to be very costly in many ways. Well. The conversation on Saturday was seen as the latest step in an unprecedented effort by a sitting president to pressurize a state official traverse the outcome off an election. As I said it was The Washington Post that got hold of the recording, and I've been speaking to Mark Vicious Sr Editor of the newspaper. His extraordinary in that a sitting president of the United States is putting pressure on state officials to as he puts it, re calculate the vote find him enough votes to win an election that he lost at the same time. It is entirely predictable and very much in concert with the way Donald Trump has behaved throughout his life. When things do not go his way, he will do anything to avoid being tagged as a loser. It's a long conversation he's having with Fellow Republican Brad Reference Burger, the Georgia secretary of state, talk us through what he says how he appeals to him and what he's asking him to do. He pushes him more or less the way we might expect a mob boss to push his underlings in a Hollywood movie about Organized crime. And he's asking the chief elections official in that state to negate the voice of the people who voted there and come up with new numbers based on a bunch of species conspiracy theories, Trump repeatedly and almost in coherently spelled out that votes had been destroyed or elections machines had been stolen or destroyed. And the Georgia official the secretary of state wrappings Burger, who his Himself a Republican, pushed back at every turn and said, No, Mr President, This is not true. This did not happen and what he's asking. Find him, 11,000 or so. Votes. Now that demand in itself is that illegal? Well, it's certainly illegal to tamper with the results of an election. And he's asking for exactly that. Is the president on the phone call committing a crime by making the ask. That's certainly for lawyers or eventually, a court to say. But there any number of voices in both parties who are now saying that president has committed acts here that are worth investigating, and perhaps worth bringing criminal charges. Highly unlikely that that would happen, But nonetheless, there's a great deal of upset. We're seeing an enormous amounts of attention paid to this story. And this is a president issuing threats I know from having written his biography that back when he was a businessman, he routinely made these kinds of threats that he would bring lawsuits against intense people that he would bring them up on criminal charges that he would make their lives difficult or impossible. So this is his pattern, but to hear it on tape from sitting president His number less shocking. I'm here. He has a couple more weeks in office. It looks as though on the basis of this recorded conversation. He isn't going to leave office quietly. Well, we don't know whether he will actually relieve the White House on January 20th, as the law requires him to do. He has always said that he will certainly leave if he loses. But of course, he's not admitting that he's lost if you look at these pattern in life When he does lose in a big way. He tends to slink away steaming and foaming and fulminating. And just as we watched over these last couple of months, so he will go down fighting. He always does. But when push comes to shove, he tends to just go away. Now this is a historic moment. Whether he will have to be asked to leave. The building will simply have to wait and see. Mark Fisher, the senior editor of the Washington Post. And just to let you know that since the third of November vote, of course, Mr Trump has been alleging widespread electoral fraud without providing any evidence. 50 states. All of them have now satisfied the election results. Some of the recounts and legal appeals, and so far the U. S courts have rejected 60 challenges to Mr Joe Biden's win and Congress is due to formally approve the election result. In just two days time.

Donald Trump is finished, but will 'Trumpism' prevail?

"It's been more than a week since the us presidential election joe biden of course has claimed victory whereas the president is yet to concede defeat but when donald trump eventually leaves office the question. We have to ask ourselves is is trumpism. Really finished after all the media conventional wisdom the new york times washington. Post the major networks. Cnn msnbc all that conventional wisdom is that the twenty twenty election represents a repudiation of trumpism and what's trump luckily to do after he leaves office well for more. Let's turn to patrick. J buchanan senior adviser to president reagan nixon and ronald reagan. Pat has been a regular fixture in america's opinion pages and cable television shows for generations. Ninety ninety two and ninety six pat buchanan ran for the presidential nomination of his party. The republican party on america first platform pass walking back to you between the lines. Good to your tom now. Let's start with the election itself to spotted trifecta of crises health economic racial the us congressional and presidential contests were very tight. How do you account for that. I think there were tight for this reason. The covid virus which hammered us in march and april and then all during the summer and full took the lodge. That's two hundred and thirty thousand americans and they induced an economic decline unrivalled since the great depression. And then you have to racial turmoil in the country. And the wake of the killing of george floyd in minneapolis riots. And and things like that. So he's really damaged trump in the eyes of the public and his administration and normally they would've killed any presidential candidate. But i will say that in the fall. When trump was further behind he basically one mechanic team won the battle against biden. It was surging at the end of the campaign but he did not get over the top or at least so far so i think what you can say is trump and trumpism won the campaign. They lost the election because of the burdens. They had to terry which were too happy to cross the finish line. And let's not forget that in the late up to the election the metric conventional wisdom the polls the pundits. They predicted a democratic sweep. A blue wave washing the republicans out of power capturing the senate and delivering an alleged democratic congressional majority if the democrats did indeed have a clean sweep of the congress and the white house what would radical progressive in the american takes. What would that have made if you had nancy. Pelosi in control of the house and chuck schumer and control. The should i which looks less and less likely now and preston biden into white house. Biden's problem would be the tremendous pressure from the progressive left wing of this party to impose his leftist agenda. The party home to the country in the first two years of his administration. And i think it would be virtually impossible biden to resist the democrats cheap to kill the filibuster. Which would eliminate the ability of the republicans to stop their agenda and we would be off to the races with medicare for all the green new deal statehood for puerto rico statehood for dc. Defunding the cops. Pack the supreme court the whole left wing democratic agenda. They would try to ram through with fifty one votes. In the senate and biden frankly would be restraining force because republicans wouldn't be able to do it if they lost the filibuster in the senate which is what. Barack obama urged the democrats to take away if they win the senate okay now bought and has pasta to sydney electoral college. Votes needed to win the white house now given that it's very hard to prove widespread electoral fraud pat. Why want trump just accept defeat. Here's trump is demanding that he be allowed to play out last play of the deal. Because i think he feels he has been treated horribly by the democrats and the liberals in the press and he's not gonna do them a favour. He's got a right to make sure. The counselor made and certain things happen by certain dates. He's not going to speed up the transition. It's not gonna be a pleasant transition at all. He's going to treat them the way they felt. They treated him when he came in with the russia investigation and all the rest of it. So i think what you're getting is. Trump is looking at upon this if it succeeds is a hostile takeover of the government of the united states. And he is acting to resisted with every legal constitutional weapon. He has so it's This is not a cordial country power at all. Okay but with dany. Before the nineteen sixty presidential election between richard nixon and john f kennedy. That was very taught. There was a lot of speculation about electoral fraud in texas and illinois. And that of course benefited. The democrats won that election now. Apologies for the very scratchy. Sound quality of these vintage news report from sixty years ago. but he's nixon. Your boss pat here. He is at four. Am at republican headquarters. After the election conceding. Defeat to and and results shows come in if the present trend continues If mr kennedy and senator kennedy will be the next president of the united states senators kennedy now. And i want you know that. Certainly this trend has continued and he does become our next president that he will have my. That's richard nixon conceding. Defeat john f. kennedy in nineteen sixty pat buchanan. Why can't trump do a nixon accept defeat graciously that at four am gathering. My wife was present. She worked for richard nixon and the nineteen sixty campaign and travel. The country would and the point is that was a different time in a different country. That america's today america's bitterly divided and one of the contributing factors is the is the belief correct in my view that donald trump was denied. Not only a good transition but donald trump was investigated by the fbi and during the transition. They went after his state of the fbi did and they had a two year investigation beach. Kim they try to defeat him then they tried to overthrow him. And i think trump feels this and he says i established nothing. They can go. I mean they can go too far as i'm concerned and we're going to run this old way out and make sure every ballot is counted and all the towns are accurate. And whether or not we're going to go to court and exercise our rights and we're not going to pretend otherwise that this is a pleasant for easy transfer of power this was a hostile takeover and trump's view. I mean they're campaign run against him former first lady. Michelle obama is already talking about the house and he could and racism and the rest endemic pain in what he come folks voted for. So i think look you gotta divided country and there's no sense pretending otherwise and trump is not gonna gauge any pretense.

Whether he'll succeed or not, is another question. But make no mistake. He wants to chart a very different course for the still most powerful country in the world. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. "And they don't even really know what they are. And it just again, it's all this misguided energy towards the NRA specifically van or were Bolsheviks something else would whereas in its place version of just push back for thirty seconds as some of us to cover congress. It struck me that the NRA's power was within the ability of the Republican primary season to influence greatly. Who would be selected or who who who could get sort of early funding not necessarily from our a coffers. But from a network of organizations like minded, folks, you're saying that basically it was never the case. No, I again, it's not that. I think that the NRA lacks any all influence. It's I think like the specific organization, it's not that. It's this money hub. That's extremely powerful. It's that I think that Republicans have a number of litmus tests that you know, you must pass in order to get through primary seasons. You know abortion is one of them gun rights is another one. And again, I'm just it's more just about the for all the Maria. Boutin madness. You know, her relationship with the NRA? I don't think it's the agency itself that's deeply nefarious or as powerful as a liberal sort of like hypothesize, I want to turn to briefly aknowledge another wrinkle in the house of representatives declined to seat Mark Harris who had been the seemingly victorious Republican candidate in North Carolina congressional race. He seemed to win by one hundred five votes after an examination of that. There was a question of. Electoral fraud. And he he's withdrawn from what will be a rematch this week, a former consultant to him in the twenty eighteen primary faced criminal charges from his activities stemming from two thousand sixteen in from the twenty eighteen primary now to turn one last story this hour, political news and history made in Chicago after an enormous fourteen person mayoral election, Chicago to African American women came out on top for run off. They are Lori Lightfoot and Toni preckwinkle they're going to compete a runoff election on April second Lightfoot is the first openly gay woman to run for mayor in Chicago. Former federal prosecutor was the head of Chicago's police board preckwinkle is the president of the Cook County board of commissioners either way, either Victor Chicago will soon have its first black female mayor. Here's preckwinkle acknowledging that factor supporters on Tuesday night after the election. We may not yet be at the finish line. But we should acknowledge that history. Is being made. And now you can hear the voice of her rival Lori Lightfoot speeding supporters after she made the run off from that pool of fourteen candidates. And it's true that not every day that a little black girl come in a low income family from a segregated steel tone makes the run on to be the next mayor of the third largest city. Come on. Now, Kim back ins, it's a quite a moment from Rahm Emmanuel to this. What does it mean for Chicago? What does it mean for politics? I mean, I think you're seeing on the local level the same thing we've been seeing nationally which is people making a different decision about who represents them what it means. And and really moving against the establishment. I mean, it seems incomprehensible just a few years ago that someone named Bill Daley would not be a elected mayor would come in third. And so I think you're seeing that really a change in a city like Chicago, which has had a lot of issues with its police department, and and other matters. I think you're seeing the electorate be responsive to that. And a look for new a new direction in their leadership. You think about Ron manual leaving hard-driving guy, President Obama once joked about manual, his former chief of staff that he thought that manual be speechless. Given that. "So we'll see what happens with this election, and what the state board of elections has to say. And there's always the possibility that the state board of elections could call for a new election if they find that there were electoral fraud, which is ironic because they always think that electoral fraud is happening on the left. But this is an example of the opposite. Yeah. I mean, this is fascinating. For for a couple of reasons, I think the first is that based on these what are often unfounded suspicions of sort of in person, voter fraud or voter impersonation. We saw the same state North Carolina pass a voter ID amendment. That is projected to disenfranchise two hundred eighty one thousand people in the state at the ballot in the same election as a major case of election fraud was happening. But it was happening via absentee ballots. Right. And oftentimes when we think about these voter ID laws and these other attempts to suppress the vote. They actually don't involve absentee ballots. They are targeting folks who show up to vote in person, and require you to present a photo ID and other proof of citizenship, and all these other types of documentation, but what we see here happening appears to be a case of absentee ballot fraud. And I think that has to be a part of this conversation. It's particularly interesting when we see on the Republican side of things Republican officials doing this. And this wasn't the first time that similar irregularities have been found in that county. This actually went back this affected the primary on this evidence. This goes all the way back to two thousand sixteen and so there's something's going on there that needs to be investigated. And it's definitely something that none of the sort of strict voter ID laws that are being passed. They're actually Craig substantial burdens for people of color devoting. None of those things. Would actually impact this. This is something that the state will have to investigate and deal with and ho folks accountable, and to that point as you mentioned Clint, I actually wasn't aware that the state board of elections was able to call for a new election and looking at the statute, it's fascinating the language of the statute because it says that the state board may order a new election upon agreement of at least five of its members in the case of any one or more of the following. And then there's a number of conditions one of which is that eligible voters sufficient in number to change the outcome of the election were improperly prevented from voting. So like, I didn't even know that they had the authority to say if we based on I don't know what the evidentiary requirements are can show that enough voters were prevented from voting that it would have changed the outcome of the election that we can hold another election. And I'm just wondering are these statutes more widespread? How many states have these for example, does Georgia have this? And if so I mean, you could make a pretty compelling case that enough eligible voters were prevented from voting. In places like Georgia and Florida that it affected the outcome of the election. And I'm wondering whether that avenue is being pursued. Whether these types of laws are also in place in those states because that could be a potential avenue to address voter suppression. The only thing at is is at one of the things that's most striking about this is that the board voted seven to two not certify the result. So this is not a straight vote down. Party lines are two of the Republican members of the board are actually in alignment with the Democrats and saying like this actually just doesn't make sense. And I think that that is actually really powerful in the context of this because I plants it it's like a little bit over nine hundred votes that is would decided this race for so many people this election was the first election. They understood they voter suppression in real time. I think that people are heard it before just like people heard about our audience that's bad and people heard about voter suppression. But they were like, I don't really know what that looks like. And then we thought happen all across the country..
