Trump Administration Finalizes Fuel Economy Standards Rollback, A Key Policy Goal
"The trump administration's deregulatory agenda continues today. The Environmental Protection Agency finalized a rollback of Obama era fuel economy standards this substantially weakens one of the country's biggest efforts to fight climate change. Npr's Nathan Rot reports. You wouldn't think it now with most of the country staying at home but transportation is the largest source of climate warming greenhouse gases in the country. That's why the Obama Administration mandated that auto manufacturers continue to make more fuel efficient cars. President trump has taken aim at that mandate as he has most of Obama's climate policies and now he has his replacement a rule that significantly weakens future standards and should the administration says make for cheaper cars. Here's Transportation Secretary Elaine. Chao during today's announcement make new vehicles more votes in feel safer for passengers and cleaner putting environment idea. Being that cheaper sticker prices means more people will buy newer safer more efficient vehicles and save money in the doing the problem with that. Argument is that more. Fuel-efficient cars are cheaper for consumers over the long run and Carlson is an environmental law professor at the University of California Los Angeles. So when you actually do the math even if you pay a little bit more upfront you save a lot more over the lifetime car. That's just one of the problems with the math. The administration is used to justify this change even the EPA's own scientific advisory council slammed earlier versions of the rule saying the agency's underlying technical analysis contained significant weaknesses. Antonio Bento a professor of policy and economics at the University of Southern California says that's because the administration is Cherry picking numbers to support this rollback for example the EPA says this change will save thousands of lives because people will be in Newark cars but to reach that number. They're assuming a car will be driven for forty years which is also a nod calculation. Because if you think about it Vehicles don't last that long. In fact in today's announcement the EPA says the average age of vehicles on the road right now is the highest. It's ever been at twelve years. Numbers like that are sure to come up. In lawsuits challenging the change more immediately than to another say the announcement which will lead to dirtier air is tone deaf given the country is dealing with a pandemic affecting people's lungs Nathan Rot NPR news.
New US plan keeps autonomous vehicle standards voluntary

Economic issues not a factor in 737 MAX's safety review
"Got another news alert on billing transportation secretary. Elaine Chao saying the White House is not pressuring regulators to unground the 737 Max in an interview with Reuters Chow said that economic issues will not be a factor in the decision vision to unground that airplane. That news just crossing right now. All right let's get Philibeaux. WHO's got more not only probably on this? But also more on Boeing and general out of Chicago PHILP and Brian just to play off. What you were talking about? There has been this theory floating around. I would say mainly for the last three or four days. People and I've heard from people who have emailed L. ME and said is there any chance that Boeing suspended Max production so they could get the White House. Say Look you're going to hurt the GDP you're going to hurt the economy to me. Looks eventually these people might have to be laid off. And I heard no indication of that from people at the EPA. I've gotten zero indication that there is is the idea that the White House is pressuring them. None at all so this plays into that with Elaine Chao saying that economic factors will have no bearing on the decision of whether or not to ground or ground. The seven thirty seven Max. We want to talk about how many cancellations that we've seen because united was out today. There's a big number for you Brian. Are you ready for a hundred and forty five thousand. That's how many U s seven thirty seven Max. Flights have been cancelled if you go from March thirteenth. You've won the grounding started all the way through when we expect the Max to be grounded for in the spring of next year united out today is the latest and yet it's interesting with united because while American and South West have said. We're GONNA take it off the scheduled till early April united. Said you know what we're GonNa do it until June fourth. That's when we plan planned to fly the plane again so if you're keeping score you've got American in South West planning to bring it back in early April and then you've got united saying we're going to bring it back in June June. There's always the chance guys that this plane gets recertified faster than expected. They could bring the plane back a little bit sooner but as of right now. Those are the latest plans and just a reminder minders you take a look at shares of Boeing production on the seven three seven Max will be halted probably early January. They don't have an exact date right. Now there's a few planes that are still in process as they worked those through In Finnish building those Brian. But that's when we will see production halt in January and you wonder how they're getting those dates those airlines in June's this April that I mean nobody really knows it could be in the summer and more can add to that hundred and forty five thousand number for canceled Flights Philip. Thank you very much agree. Friday a lot of work this week have a great weekend Phil. Thank you very much. So guys bowing down thirteen percent. This quarter at this rate is gonNA join three others. One of four Dow stocks dental before that are down down on the year tragedy on it looks like investors are starting to give up on the stuff. It's the tragedy happened. Went October eighteen and then after that it was march march of two thousand nine hundred has been going on for some time. Now and Boeing has been hanging onto a prophet year today. Now it's up about one percent or so probably going to go negative. I get it I get it. That should be somewhat safe but I think you want to avoid it now. There's so many layers to the story but what it is bullish for our the airlines. I'm a long spirit airlines. Save you take you take supply off the market and it helps the airlines. There's been a couple of upgrades in the airline space as well save is where I'm law agree. I agree with Steve. The unintended consequences of this are actually more supply discipline out of airlines. But but to be clear Boeing's been aside way stock for twenty one months. I mean even before this issue shoe. This was a company that people were wrestling with evaluation. So I I don't think that this announcement of course they cancel. Of course. That's the number. Of course. United is running for cover and Cya for them because they were so off-side unlike Delta. Who didn't have this kind of exposure? That doesn't sit. Well listen the. The analysts community has a three hundred eighty six dollar average price targets target sixty dollars above where the stock is down. One of two things. You've got to happen to stocks. Got To recover. The analysts community is GONNA lose downgrade and start cutting short-term the tragedy notwithstanding in the short term or two year underperformance notwithstanding. Where is this going to be thirty six months out if one sort of long term and I think everyone knows it? It's going to be hard you you think so. You're that confidence sure. Okay for the latest on Boeing's Max

"Yeah, it's just not it can't happen. I don't think. Well, let's talk about Elaine Chao, the she is a Mitch McConnell's wife, and she is the secretary of transportation. And she is also a massive fucking Griff ter-. So I thought it'd be. I want to bring her before the expert. To get your thoughts on Elaine Chao, so she owned stock in a huge gravel company gravel like the stuff we build roads out of and she signed an ethics agreement saying, she would divest from that since ethics people were like, are you are you fucking kidding me? You the stock for this company that she owns like a massive Sharon goes up every time someone mentions the word infrastructure week. And like that's what she's in charge of now. So she basically gets to buy controlling policy determine how well her stock does I smell a conflict. Yeah. It's a massive conflict of interest. And she was, like, of course it's a massive conflict of interest. I'm twenty I'm going to divest guys and then it took her like six months to best. And while that was happening. She made four hundred thousand dollars off of her. She just said infrastructure on repeat every interview she was like infrastructure and also infrastructure. And you know why are we talking about it? If. Destruction. I mean initiative vested I wouldn't be shocked. If there's some kind of sneaky way we're on paper, it doesn't look like she owned stock in this, but she's still getting like major kickbacks for the success of this company. We have all gravel roads everywhere, you'll get rid of grass. Like the stuff that they do in the Trump administration is just more transparent versions of the things that are already happening. Like normally what you would do is you would have this job and then go and become like the chairman of the board at a gravel company and make money off of that. But she's doing it at the same time, and it's just an amazing like lack of effort at being like they're just like I don't they don't even care, but they are gonna do. Yeah. They don't Trump has been so unethical that he's really open the floodgates to politicians being able to frolic who they truly are right. Which I love that. Beach. I didn't want to think about any of the Mona be picturing, Mitch McConnell frolicking through field. We she's like my solution to ocean cleanup make the ocean gravel road. So she also used her position to set up meetings between her family's company and the Chinese government, her family are Chinese shipping like magnates. They have a huge shipping company, and this is actually interesting because people there was a story at a certain point during the mid terms where people were like, wait, so much McConnell has made the most money in the past, like, ten years, and people were wondering if it was because he had done something a corrupt, and it was actually because he married Elaine Chao challenge. She is like a huge shipping, air and has tons and tons of money. But she is still, you know, trying to use her position in shady ways to enrich her and her family. So, yeah. Can be doing it right. Sample from the her shoe line to go out of business shut out to that, because I told you those shoes a narrow. It's weird that the government has become our new goldrush rate. But we gotta get involved in politics. So we can make this money. They are probably quietly, the most powerful incorrupt people in, in Washington or among them, because, you know, McConnell, has huge power, and now she has incredible power, and the Democrats are kind of hesitant about going after her with investigations because her husband's Mitch McConnell. So if you go after her with investigations he can be a complete asshole, complete cock, knocker, a believe..

"Reelection next year that politico dot com. Reporting follows reporting from the New York Times that Elaine Chao had also tried to get the State Department to arrange meetings for her family members with Chinese government officials Elaine Chao family owns a shipping company that does a ton of business with the Chinese government when she was about to visit China for the first time as Trump's transportation secretary she according to the New York Times called the US embassy in Beijing. To try to get them to arrange for her family members to sit in on meetings with Chinese government officials, while her family is doing business with the Chinese government. It was so wildly inappropriate as a request. It calls it caused the embassy in Beijing to contact State Department headquarters in Washington to say. What do you what do we? Seriously? I don't think that's exactly how they phrased it. But you get the ethics officials also reportedly alerted at both the department of transportation and the State Department ultimately after those ethics officials were alerted to what she was trying to do. Elaine Chao called off that trip. But that is not the first time since she has been Trump's transportation secretary that she has reportedly tried to hook up her family members and their business in politically sensitive ways, and that follows reporting from the Wall Street Journal that although Elaine Chao was told by US ethics officials that she had to divest from the country's largest supplier of wrote, making materials, which is not artificial out. Right, literally, she is the secretary of transportation, she's in charge of building roads. So that person can't be personally financially invested in the country's biggest road-building company because of that very obvious conflict of interest. She was told to divest from that company, she signed an ethics agreement saying, she would divest from that company. But then the Wall Street Journal recently reported she did not. She did not. And she continued to hold stock in that company as she has been serving as the transportation secretary hundreds of. Thousands of dollars worth of stock in that company, while at the same time her every utterance about infrastructure and road building and the potential priorities of the transportation department would goose the stock price of that company in which she holds tons of stock. The Elaine Chao growing ethics and corruption. Scandals would be would be amazing on their own even for the Trump cabinet. Right. Which is a very specific level of that's a threshold. I mean Pruitt price Zinke, Alex IB anyway, it would be a big deal. Those corruption scandals even just for the Trump cabinet, but because she is also married to the Republican leader of the Senate. And because he's implicated in some of this stuff. He has been given millions of dollars by Elaine. Chao father. As Elaine Chao has used her position as transportation secretary to boost her father's business in China. Right. He has been, he has personally benefitted from that to the tune of millions of dollars. Because the Elaine Chao corruption. Scandals are not just a Trump cabinet scandal, because they are also scandals that have proven to be of direct financial benefit to the top Republican in the Senate. This is this is bad. This is in this is back in a few different ways so far, the containment effort via lane Chow, and Mitch McConnell on this has been to try to laugh, it off play it all down. Assure everybody that this is no big deal in these allegations. Don't even bother them at all. Well, the Wall Street Journal reports tonight that Elaine Chao has now, finally actually sold off her gigantic stake in the building company from which she has been profiting, as recently as this month as secretary of transportation. So apparently, all this reporting did bug them a little mater, finally sell off that stock. But this, this is just one of those amazing days where like the news, a won't stop and be it keeps driving home, the same point over and over again. I mean when it comes to using your public position for private gain today, the Washington Post was first to report that the president and his family just pocketed, a few million dollars from the sale of this property in Beverly Hills, California. Now, it's obviously a very nice place. It's apparently like five thousand square feet..

"They can't make Trump any worse either believe than he appears to be. And then they focus on their legislative agenda and show that they were elected to get things done. And they got things done. And at the same time, they hold their investigative hearings, and we'll see where those go they may go to impeachment. They may not well, and they've got a new line of investigation that they can pick up on because the New York Times reported this week that Elaine Chao the secretary of transportation, who also happens to be the wife of Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell has ties to this big shipping company called foremost group. It's her family shipping business. It's made big donations to her husband and her efforts to boost it in China were noticed by the times, where the company has very deep ties and she didn't disclose it Alice. You know, these kinds of stories have been problems for Trump cabinet members in the past number of them have had to go because of stuff like this is this going to be a problem for Elaine Chao. I, I don't see it as such she's done a tremendous job in her role as transportation secretary, but it is it is a cause for concern with regard to what are the business ties. Is in the business relationships with a lot of, of people that are serving in our administration at this point in these are important questions to ask. But this is nothing new this hasn't happened. This has happened in the past. We there were questions about business relationships with Hillary Clinton and the, the Clinton foundation in business ties that were in that administration as well. These are nothing new. I would like to think that the questions will be asked and answered and secretary Chao can go about her job, that she's doing transportation secretary. This. I think this is worth an investigation to see if there's any real conflict there, or not, we don't know but strikes me about this is that, that for ties to Chinese businesses in Chinese trade, that this is in direct contrast or conflict with Donald Trump's physician throwing all these tariffs on China, and I just wonder why Elaine Chao has not spoken up about that or maybe even resigned because of that, but I want to ask about this new evidence that surfaced, it was found on a deceased Republican strategists hard drive. I'm sure strategist everywhere making a note about that. But Alice, this is documents that pretty clearly show that the administration wanted to add the are you a citizen question to the sentence to the census to frighten away non-citizens and give Republicans and whites and electoral advantage. The documents show that saying as the administration did before the courts that they wanted the question to help enforce. The Voting Rights Act to help minorities was just a front. Unseemly unethical what else? I see absolutely zero problem with this question being on the census, but even reasoning the, the, the reasoning behind that what they say was the reason behind it is certainly worth checking into. But why in the world is there a problem with asking is this person a citizen of the United States? Look, this was unseemly or of this is not proper or in some cases people refer to this as racist. If this is a racist question. Now was it racist when it was on President Clinton's a extended form census form was racist? And unseemly when it was on President Obama's long form census form. Those are questions that need to be asked. If it was okay, then there should not be a problem with it now I believe it is absolutely racist. And I think it's clearly political, and I think the word for this is busted will barrages busted, he lied to congress when he said, this was all about getting an accurate count and. This is in court today. It'll be before the I mean already before the supreme court they're supposed to roll on it by the end of the month. I think it's a no brainer. The constitution says the census every ten years is intended to get to Termine, quote, the whole number of persons in each state, and because so many federal dollars are allocated, depending on the total number of people not just a total numbers citizens..

"Com hotline. Papa t I believe it is. Hey, thanks so chance to get on. Yeah. Hours of service. No matter what what they wanna do with them there. There's always gonna be a set now hours that you're going to be allowed to drive and then beyond the clock. There's always gonna be the drivers out there that are going to push it and all that limit. You're allowed to drive eleven hours than the normal ship. Basically once you hit that ten out, and our issue already be looking for a place to pull over and take your, you know, take your mandatory break. Whatever there's always going to be a driver that wanting to push it live on got five miles to make it all I've only got two miles to negative. My. Decimation wherever they're delivering out or whatever. And. Somebody wants to bend the rules a little bit fell. So what do you do? So and set of eleven hours. Let's go to Levin out. No matter how long you extend our services, always going to be those drivers they're gonna wanna push it. You know, we're gonna wanna want to go back to paper log well. Yeah. The. Fifteen minutes or a half an hour to get through, you know. And and I can you know. Done it myself on a few occasions. But you know, every every business is regulated to certain extent. So. Learn to live by the rules, as they are the primary message, I think they've they've realized though property that there is a problem with the hours as they are that the lack of flexibility, I firmly fully believe they're going to go back to giving you the ability to to split your sleeper berth time. They're gonna can that thirty minute mandatory break thing, which has done nothing for safety. And there's a few things they can do you're still going to be on a clock per se. But if you have the ability to stop that clock that would be very beneficial. Wouldn't you think? Oh, yeah. Definitely. I tell that to my wife, and France, or whatever I said, why don't you start the clock? Log in on your any log, boom. That's running. And there's nothing you can do to stop it. So. Oh well. Yeah. I'm I live in a world where area truck show coming up at you choice a days. What what would you go Thursday or Friday? As far as just coming down to check the show out. Yeah. Now that now that Elaine Chao gonna come on Thursday. But now I'm kind of interested in lane challenge to say, so either two days are those Saturday is undoubtedly always the busiest day. Now, he got the question Mark about the weather Saturday because that's when they're talking about possibly, the showers and thunderstorms. So yeah. But Thursday Thursday Friday Thursdays last year. Thursday seem pretty darned busy to me. If Friday was kind of inbetween Saturday was pretty darned busy. Yeah. It's been about three years since fan. So I'm looking forward to going this year. So. Like, I said, I know I was fine. I go on Thursday. So. Couple of months ago, you were talking about barbershop that actually give you the old style haircuts. Now, save the back of the neck around the ears. We're we have. Well, we have one we have one in mobile. I don't know if I hear the name or not. Leon's classic barbershop. I sixty four Larssen freeway at exit five and Leon's about eighty five year old barber. Are they opened up? I think it's seven o'clock in the morning, but they'll they'll take area sent me up where you want and then. How hot shaving cream and go around your ears with a straight razor now. So yeah. And then you've been there for several years. I don't know what places he likes to go on. But I've got a few bites that are really they said on the list if you'd like to hear those, well, we don't we don't typically go out a whole hell of a lot. Once we get there. We tend to just get a walk from the hotel over to the convention center. And then walked back in. Eight at the hotel. I'm kind of worried this year about getting out the traffic is probably going to be double what it normally is with that whole Sweet Sixteen and everything going on. Yeah. Well, that's that's downtown right there on the river at the at the center center. And then yeah, of course, now, the fairgrounds expo center is, you know. Five or six miles away from there. So as far as traffic, you know, and then those those games are going to be later on in the day where Chuck sale traffic is, you know, earlier in the day. So I I don't know. And then the big things that Thursday, then you're gonna have one game on Saturday. So anyway. People are looking for a hotel if they find too expensive and local they might want to check out elizabethtown right off. I sixty five I ninety four. There's a brand new hotels in that area and also barge down which would be a whole lot. I think a whole lot cheaper than anything less than mobile. So exactly we've got some. We got some friends that always liked to go. They go over across the river to the what the casino boat over there. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Horseshoe. All needs to be offering it call now. Yeah. So anyway, if anybody gets a chance Jim beam that Jim beam bourbon down in bullet county exit one twelve off sixty five that that's worthwhile to do if you ever wanted to go to. Distillery made now. You can actually actually. Urban about Louisville slugger museum is that. Yeah. You can go in there and have your own personal made up. Have your name put on it, or whatever you want on it? So it's around forty or fifty bucks have your own personalized bat. But it's worth money to take that. You're also, okay. Oh, yeah. So I had my friends last year. I think last couple of years they've come down. They've tried to get me to go. They said there's this restaurant. It's like in a neighborhood in. It's almost like in a residential area. Somebody's basement to where they they only. It's only open on the weekends or whatever. But they said, it's yeah. You know, what they're talking about any idea. I wouldn't know that one. There is one. It's a really good the primary fish. Fabulous. But they do have other things on the menu. It's right on the river not far from where terminal is that like lemmings L I N G S and that. Face plate. A lot of there. Well, that's a real good popular local location there. So anyway, and they always say, well, you need to go to Ruth, Chris. I said I got pocket book. Yeah. Yeah. It is. The same thing is is in Annapolis Orlando or wherever you wanted to go. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, okay. That's about all. I got for you. Thank you very much. Right. If you get by the show, we are actually in the north wing lobby area lobby. So if you're coming into the convention center, and you get to park out in front of the venue, you'd become coming in like to the the front side of freedom hall, and we'd be right there to the right in the north wing lobby. Of course that front lot fills up. I bet I bet it's full up by nine or ten o'clock there Friday more Thursday morning. And then they start shoveling shuffling around to the side and eventually to the backside is the parking fills up. So at that point there, there's tons of people that ended up coming in from the back side, you're coming in via the back entrance to the west wing or the north wing and a lot of people never even come out because they think they're leaving the show because you gotta go out the doors of the main wing to get into the big lobby area. And there's all kinds of booths and whatnot out there in the north wing lobby. But they they never make it out. I'll look look never did find you couldn't find you down there. Because they think they're leaving the show. But that's where we'll be. All right. Quick time out here back in two on America's trucking network..
