"Today's politician was one of the longest serving women of color in the US Congress. She spent several of her over two decades of service being the only black woman in the chamber. Let's talk about Cardis Collins. CARDIS. Robertson. Was Born on September twenty fourth nineteen thirty one in Saint Louis Missouri. When cardis turned ten, her family moved to Detroit where she attended high school. After graduation, cardis moved to Chicago to live with her grandmother and find a job. She worked in a mattress factory before joining the Illinois Department of Labor as a stenographer. At the same time, she also studied accounting at Northwestern University. In. Nineteen fifty eight Cardis Mary George W Collins. The couple had a son Kevin the following year. After graduating from college in Nineteen, Sixty, seven, Cardis was promoted to secretary then became an accountant and auditor for the Illinois Department of Revenue. All the while she supported her husband's campaigns, for Alderman, committee men and US representative. Cardis also gained her first direct political experience as Committee Woman of the Twenty Fourth Ward Democratic Organization. In nineteen seventy George won seat in the US House representing the predominantly African American west side of Chicago. He was elected following the death of his predecessor. He served two terms and was particularly passionate about improving the lives of black people serving in the military. Shortly, after winning election to serve another term George died in a plane crash. Carts was devastated by the loss of her husband. Through her grief. She announced her candidacy to fill her husband's congressional seat. She was supported by the city mayor and won the nomination with eighty four percent of the vote. She then won the election on June Fifth Nineteen, seventy-three with ninety, two percent of the vote that made Cardis the first black woman to represent Illinois in Congress. Transition into her new congressional role wasn't easy. She was politically inexperienced and wasn't confident enough to voice all of her opinions right away. She relied on her colleagues to show her the ropes and she later said once people learned I had something to say I gained confidence. Hardest is main goal is a representative was to improve life for the on Chicago's West Side. Along with other low income communities and people of color across the country. She always kept the well being of her constituents as her main focus. Spending eight days a month in her district to remain accessible. Throughout her tenure, she would serve on several committees including the influential committee on Energy and Commerce. She started serving on the committee on government operations. She participated in two different subcommittees later, working to tighten regulations on the transportation of toxic materials and improve air travel safety. In nineteen seventy nine. Cardis was elected president of the Congressional Black Caucus. She was only the second woman to earn this honor. She openly criticized President Jimmy Carter's record on civil rights, as well as his failure to make Dr Martin Luther King Junior's birthday a national holiday. Cards spent much of her time in Congress defending affirmative action programs and ensuring equal funding and attention to women and people of Color. Curtis staunchly advocated Breast Cancer Awareness. In nineteen ninety, she wrote a law expanding Medicare coverage for elderly and disabled women to receive. Mammograms. She also designated October as national breast cancer awareness month. "Like to low the lawn. Back and forth on that. I wanna hire it out. I do. But I also am very particular about it. So kinda wanted to be done particular way. But I think this this vacuuming carpet on. Yeah. The lines. And then you're like, hey, check it out. Yeah. Look out that window trimming to the trimming with the weedy maritime or every other Howard every other. Yeah. Just for time takes too much time. I gotta I gotta hired out. I'll get a neighborhood kid. You should Ryan will do it. Let me tell you why I'm asking. That's the worst thing you could make a suck up to I robot, which is the company behind the roomba robot vacuum talking, Donna. Right. This is this was my reaction today. It's releasing a robotic lawn mower that supposedly will be able to mow your lawn while you sit on your. She said, the robot mower will it's I going to be available in Germany, and then here in the US if everything goes, right? Wow. Sign me up. Yes. Yes. Someone's if no one gets shredded. Really mean? Fred Claus in Germany. But he's just leaving it on his lawn. Sweaters, your legs. Clouds his inside watching TV clauses walking. This Weiner schnitzel dog gets run over by the dog might but I think Klaus might be able to get away. They don't move that fast. I love it. This is coming from the guy who doesn't even have a lawn. Thank you shut shut up. Oh, yeah. Don't worry by flow. All right. Yeah. Of course, you love it when you don't have to do it. I love doing it. When I did do it. I'll do your do both yuan's call me. All right. You have to price yourself though. In fact, quick note for everyone out there. If you offer some sort of like a professional service. Maybe you're good at doing blank, whatever it is. Don't be afraid to say. Yes. But you need to pay for that. Right. It's everybody's everybody's family. Everybody's a friend. Everybody wants to use it for fleet bell kit. And you know, you pay your dues early on. And then after that say, yes. But that requires time. And so this is the this is the amount. All right. I like it. It's good advice. Once again, thank you. Steve, right. I have another favorite. Did you guys watch the state of the union address last night? Yes. I do not. Well, this was my favorite part of the whole thing. "I've listened to show long enough to know that whole life policies are generally four letter words. Yes. But we're trying to help my mother-in-law with the situation. I'm trying to wonder if it ever make sense to keep paying a policy where there may be benefit that we could put to good use. And specifically the policies for one hundred thousand she is eighty one years old in fairly good health. It'll be level payments about thirty five hundred dollars a year for the next one hundred. We're just trying to figure out what to do. There's no cash value to it. Do we stop it all together, or do we keep paying with the idea that at some point we can put that money not to the insurance company, but some other use whether it's college education are charity or any other reason, I know normally we would never continue. But is there any case sunk cost, would you continue? Yeah. Why is there? No cash value. We think is we're learning more about the situation that there might have been a lapse at some point in time where some of that cash was lost. So were they use the cash to pay the premium keep it open? Exactly, that's the best. We've learned. So why would want to know that answer to that question? But let's pretend that the that you have accurate information zero. So basically, we're measuring thirty five hundred against one hundred thousand if we're going to be cold and just look at the math, right as ten years will be thirty five thousand you still come out sixty thousand ahead, and if she passes anywhere in the next ten years, right? If you pass anywhere in the next twenty years, it'd be seventy thousand you still come out ahead. Not counting present value money. But then the longer we go into this equation the worse it gets on present value of money. So. Yeah. I mean, if everybody's got the money, you're going to get a return on it. Right. Who's the named beneficiary? If this point it's the family, and I think there's not a a big need among the family. I think it's more situations. We put that money to some good use her name or for some other reason. Okay. Well, I mean, it's a simple thing if you're for for in terms of you can put money to good use any other way, if you want you put the thirty five hundred good use who's gonna pay the thirty five hundred the family a group she still has some assets. And as my wife starting to manage those they're using those funds to possibly continue to paint us premiums, which lowers the estate right value by that much, but we're increasing effectively the estate value because the same people that would have gotten the estate are gonna get the beneficiary. That's right. Okay. So nobody's getting cheated in this coming up short. And everybody's is how many people are involved in the there are five five kids now, so far they're all in agreement. I wife sort of leading the analysis. Yeah. I mean, if she doesn't live to one hundred and one I mean, I'm being cold here. Okay. I'm just doing math. I'm not we don't want. We're not trying to kick kick granny off or anything. But if she doesn't live one hundred one you come out, but she lives to one hundred one you've probably broke even because I seventy thousand and that seventy thousand probably worth one hundred had you invest that during that time so give or take maybe maybe even less than that. But life expectancy, she's already beyond normal life expectancy. Here's a good question. What's the what's her her family history? How long did her mom live? Well, her mama lived up about eighty five. And although she's got some health issues as her son-in-law. I will say she's pretty strong willed. So I think. Yeah. Go for a while. Right. Right. But okay. And her dad her doubt, I didn't live quite as long I want to say into his seventies. So we don't have a family history live into one hundred right now. Okay. But I again this very cold to discuss it that way..
