Don Johnson on His New Film 'Knives Out'

"This is popcorn where we tell you what's happening at the movies and there's a movie now that is a WHO Dunnit of sorts but to me. It's the most fun that I've had at the movies movies this year. It's called knives out. And one of the stars is my guest today. Don- Johnson here especially little torture chamber. We Ah the black inside the black kind event also. Well people confess when they sit in this chair. I'll tell you anything anything. Anything he wanted to unburden yourself on. This is a you know I'm I'm ready. I'm ready to just leave. Just push the button. Okay Yeah who did it. No I is a movie that actually begins with the murder but it's not like we know anything well. The interesting thing is is that in the first ten ten minutes you see the actual death actual murder you see and so without knowing without knowing what you're meant to see or what what what you know there. And then you spend the next COUPLA hours having a blast watching these incredibly beautifully flog people entitled I really it just Hilarious it's Christopher amherst character that murdered right and he's having his eighty fifth birthday and yes this all star cast including you. I looked at that movie into any one of these bastards could adopt. Yeah that cast. Is You know the the interesting thing that happened. Is that when we got together to make this movie. It all came together pretty fast and we we arrived in. We shot out of south side of Boston towards Wellesley in this in that house in a big mansion. Yeah and and We all had these new enormous trailers not more than two hundred yards away from the house. we never used them. All we did was as we go downstairs in the basement of this house and we'd picked a room a lot like this a lot more friendly but I had a little more humor to it not much but we would sit around and tell stories about the movies. We'd done it asked you know I'd asked Daniel Daniel Daniel Craig about you know what. Tell me about that stunt and tell me what you know about about this and that and he had asked me about things that that We had done Christopher plummer summer and and I've known Christopher for a long time we we held down a couple of barstools and in San Francisco. I'm not shocked. And that and Jamie Lee Curtis who plays. You're pissed. Oh she he's still see. Well I worked out pretty well because she plays my wife and the thing and I showed up for work she started bossing me around and I said okay. Why not and captain? America's your son Chris Evans. Yeah this normal. Sure everybody's just hanging out there that hey birthplaces and there's a lot of movies that I see sometimes where I think the actors actors are having a great time. But I'm not in this case it's red from what you guys were doing to the audience when we see I know it's infectious. It really is. Yeah and that's harder actually think you know the the the the extraordinary extraordinary thing about this We didn't have a table read. We didn't rehearse we just showed up on the first day and you no. It's not an uncomplicated. No people have to and so we showed up on the first day. And we we start to go and I and and I hit a I hit the tone that I think is right. and Lo and behold Jamie Lee tosses the ball back to me and Scott the same tone and then we started to roll and everybody else sort of you know did their thing and we kind of brought that sense of joy in and in the moment to the to the to the to the To two knives out and I think that that's what you feel. I think that that joy in that fun kind of ride is what you feel like. You're lifted up. But it has a very contemporary temporary kind of spin on it. Yeah you should explain Richard who is a bit of a rat bastard. Yeah well they're they're all horrible people there are they are but he. He is kind of the personification of the Great. I loved him because he doesn't do. Anything doesn't have a job. AUB doesn't do anything he just you know. He's the personification of entitled because he lives off of His wife in the family and all that stuff I sort of played him like a like a one of those country club sizes. Just kind of walking around with half a buzz on over time. It is whatever you want but yeah people you need to see this. And when they do they can thank us for it. I can thank you. You're welcome. You're welcome bureaus. It's a good time and then I have to bring this up too because it's so great is watchman on HBO. You know I've seen you do a lot of great things things right from the beginning. You know even Miami Vice where when people think of it now and they think of how you're dressed and the style that you had and the suits the cheese and the t shirts and the whole deal no socks yeah started a complete fashion trend but that was a really good show. Yeah I was a little ignoring by in the beginning when there's Oh it's just fluff at style over substance and I was going well not so fast you know we we managed to get had some you know a golden globe. And you're gone. What does that mean? It's true But yeah no I've I've been fortunate in that I've had some Some meaty parts get to play over the years and I just think I mean you'll show Abo thing is is is ah trip. Sorry to interrupt with that Help the the the the writer creator of Damon Lindelof was I think I gave him his first job on Nash Bridges. You don't quite remember no way I mean I know that I I saw now I see. Yeah Yeah and then he went on of course to To do lost and forgiving him. No no no. He's true they should. I should be getting away. From all guys Sean Ryan and Carlton Carlton Cues and all the I mean. So many people came out of that That little incubator. I had gone up there. Those shows Nash Bridges and Miami. I swear long running shows which you're playing cops and I remember hearing you do an interview once and said I'm done with that you know and here you are as sheriff drugged God. You Judge Judge for judge hanging around the hanging around. But there's something in that role on. I know I get killed if I say anything too much about it but you know we probably both would. Well you'd be specially killed but I don't know how you get killed yeah to do this. But it's such a wonderfully complex charming character Thank you might have many many other level the NFL. What's happening? Yeah well when I see an emmy nomination for that too in your future Oh bless your heart. Don't vote for the Emmy Okay. So it's useless. I think you know every listen every reality start somewhere with a rumor. Okay talk to John. You heard it here therefore I give you know I'm not getting it's make it happen. Yeah that is a lot of fun to do too because it was. I didn't have a character who can be sitting at a family dinner and get up and do Rogers and Hammerstein and make everybody feel. I WANNA be around this guy. It was just very ballsy and Fabulous to what you know. That's the way I felt about it because Damon column. He wrote me this beautiful letter and of course if you want an actor's attention you just write him a letter and tell him how great he is and you've got his undivided attention. I guaranteeing I don't care who it is. It's like Kryptonite right. You know. Start Bragging on an actor and telling them how great they are. They'll do anything and I fell victim to that. He came in. Yeah Yeah you're the God. And so he Lewis. Is this Lewis right walk on. I love it but he asked me to come in and he told me he kinda told me that story. The sort of long grades plans for for watching it. I don't think he wanted to scare me off so he didn't. He didn't tell me the whole thing but he told me enough and I and I kind of felt like well. I'm in on the joke and I like that. You know and and I also think that it's an interesting thing to have My fans wouldn't expect it no one expects and it's kind of A. It's kind of like one of those things where I can get away with that these days where maybe couldn't before

"These unconscious, they really are unconscious beliefs that we should constantly be productive are getting in the way of our ability to use our leisure time if ectively to recharge our batteries and come back to those obliga- Sion's that do require productivity being more productive. The issue though, I think is that for many people, even if this has become their life where they. Are tired and stressed out and exhausted all the time. It becomes their normal. And yeah, it's not great, but it's not so painful that there's a big urge to change. You'd just muddle through. I think you're absolutely right. I think oftentimes what happens is people don't change until they hit a brick wall, you know, when does the drunk realize he has a drinking problem when he wakes up in the gutter on his family's left them, but that's really unfortunate, isn't it right? We want to, it'd be better to take a step back. Take a deep breath and take a look at the life. We're living and consider is this the life I want? I is it my objective to get to my eighty fifth birthday and think, wow, productive. I was I I don't think most people would be proud of that. They may be happy with their accomplishments, but I think there's a lot more to life than just working as much as you can. "Lot he's a man, of the people Largely I believe he is yes I mean the only thing, that I would, say and yet at least he had the balls. To come on and talk about it. But you, remember he actually he. Signed on for the gas STA He did and he. Came. On the, air and explained yes and I gave him I I give him so much credit that he did that because so many, others were just, being weasels and didn't want to talk about it And he admitted that it sucks he admitted that the money was squandered and everything but anyway, my point is even when he did something, that, I disagreed with he he, was still kind of like upstanding about it but yeah he's the same guy and this I love how he went toe to toe with The red light, cameras when everybody else was taken the cash from the red light camera companies. Declan the scandalous hey wait we're ripping people off, and so in in a lotta ways he has been very. Much a man of the people well I know I am going to be in the minority on this but Declan oh Scanlon is introducing. A Bill that will be wildly popular. With most of you I'm. Sure it's not exactly raising the speed limits but the net effect of it will be higher speed limits his legislation is trying to use some science as far as how to set speed limits and he's using and you've heard this term before I'm, sure the eighty fifth percentile formula. He wants to use that he wants to actually. Put that, in law that that is how we need to set speed limits from, now on is using the eighty fifth percentile that. Sets the, speed limit at a speed at which eighty five percent of motorists are already dry So in other words we know that in fifty five zone and there's fewer and fewer of them out there but we know that people are doing more like sixty three sixty four easily Well then you set a speed limit around that baby say sixty five Now where it is already sixty five you know nobody's really doing sixty five seventy three of, the other day. And get passed on the left and right same. Time there you go you do in seventy three seventy four seventy five, now if eighty five percent of drivers are. Doing say about seventy five then you would set. Instead of sixty five you would set that speed limit at seventy five now do you think that this would be a good idea because it's basically going to end. Up meaning ten to fifteen miles per hour faster than the speed. Limit so imagine where the speed limits are right now in New Jersey and do you think that we should have this law. That the speed limits must be set by the eighty fifth percentile form it's to me it's kind, of like a defacto way of ending right up. With legislation that says raise? The speed limits by ten miles per out is that a good idea. Yes or no one eight hundred two eight three. One one point, five I'm probably the only one who will? Say, this I admit it but so let me. Just. Say why again This I remember clearly back in the nineties when. They raise the, speed limit from fifty five to sixty. Five There were all their old articles I've read them. Before I've read the passages before on this show where people. Were citing how people. Are already driving sixty five they're not obeying the fifty. Five mile per hour speed limit they're going sixty five. We're just going to make legal what they're already doing it's not going to encourage people to speed beyond that it just will be. Taking away the chance of them getting a ticket for. What they already do fast. Forward all these years later. Now the speed limit is sixty five water people driving they're not. Driving sixty five they're now driving seventy five so. What they said back then over time. Failed to be true it was true in the first maybe even year I don't really have the time. Line I know definitely in the days and weeks that followed the raising of the speed limits to sixty five. I. Know that there was compliance because there was a big public campaign by the state police and other agencies That no kidding there's going to be zero tolerance you will get tickets but over the years people learned. I could get a little bit more I could do sixty. Eight I'm doing sixty. Eight seven and we ended up all these years later. The same ratio basically that much higher when it's sixty. Five versus that much higher when it was fifty five and so if everybody right now is doing about seventy five even eighty if. That's the eighty fifth percentile in you raise it to. Seventy five people are going. To stay there I don't. Think stuff you're driving where they actually feel comfortable I think it's. Driving where they can go as fast as they. Can thinking they won't get a ticket. And if it's seventy five I think they're going to go to eighty five now it might not be. Immediate but I think over time over years eventually we're going to be having people routinely doing ninety ninety five I don't know that. I would I don't think I'd, be comfortable drive in ninety to ninety, five and I'm not all that comfortable doing eighty or eighty five I wouldn't mind. Is speed limits I wouldn't mind it at all oh I'm gonna get buried alive in this I would not take that bet I'm probably the only one who would say don't do it I, I admit that but we wanna know do you think Declan oh. Scanlon is right that he. Wants, to change the, way, we set speed. Limits which. Really, will mean probably seventy. Five at least mile. Per hour. Speed limits, in New Jersey one eight? Hundred. Two eight three one zero one. Point five John in Tom's river. You're, on New Jersey one zero one point. Five guy how you doing okay So I agree I? Don't Because you could raise. It to a hundred people. Gotta drive on ten fifteen it's. Just, it's going to happen well thanks for blown my theory of how the. Our was going. To go I can't believe I can't believe the first. Caller is agreeing. With me We raised them. From fifty five to sixty five. That's, when people started doing seventy five eighty eventually right not immediately but yes. Eventually a pretty. Pretty quick it happened I think you know and and The only thing I could say that if you. Raise it then you have to enforce it but, you? Can't enforce, like three. Miles an hour because the. Courts just. On I'm saying like, I know Speed. At sixty five and, somebody does sixty seven and you give them a ticket they're going to go, to court and they're gonna get. Let off because it's too close to fight the calibration yeah exactly so so, I say, you, can't because Soon we'll be doing one hundred yeah I? Don't know how many. People are comfortable doing one hundred though John, thanks, for calling New Jersey one zero one point five. Okay here's a terrifying prospect I'm not saying Declan would be okay, with us but what if they pass declins. Law right the eighty fifth percentile and then somebody else comes along and says okay. We'll now it's actually time that we've studied it we're gonna raise the, speed, limits to seventy five maybe. Even eighty but because. We. Have, to have zero. Tolerance now we're. Going. To install speed cameras and give you speeding tickets through the. Mail now Declan would hate the somebody else would love that in the legislature Robin mountainside your on New Jersey. One, zero. One point five hey, guys don't okay All right so. I'm a I commute forty five minutes every day eighty seven twenty four, hundred seventy eight and I find. That most people are. Comfortable. Going, seventy five. Eighty I think it's seventy five? In parts that aren't urban would be perfectly fine with the tolerance up to. Eighty after that you could take them. All you want do you think people would drive that. I think most people are comfortable of not going too much faster than that so I think they would Thanks for your call. C. and if I really felt that way then. I would absolutely, be on board with it because? I, don't think that's. Too fast but I honestly believe most people end, up thinking more, about, the margin of where. They're, not gonna lose money, rather than. The margin of where they're gonna lose their lives so I can see people doing eighty five ninety then routinely are what do. You think about Declan oh scam. Len's idea should these speed limits, be higher in jersey one eight. "Plunking through the app store trying to find something else to try i i speak probably for all three of us in saying that my life is way too busy to just sit there and kind of figure out what's a new game i could try her oh let me rieger my to do management for the eighty fifth time i don't know about you but i don't have time for that and so i very rarely go to the app store for any reason other than to see if there's updates that that i need because maybe an app is not functioning the way i want or i've heard rumors of some new feature coming out in some apps that i already have and so thinking as you were talking like where do i what would cause me to download a new app these days and i would say that that twitter is my apps store in the sense that when i hear some rumblings about a brand new appar actually max stories and other great example of this when i see a review of some new app that supposedly really good that would lead me to the store but i don't find myself going there just for funsies just to see what's going on which is not by the way in indictment about anything that the that that is happening on the app store i think what's going on in the app store with this whole editorial team in the in the the features they've been doing in the art for them i think it's all great i really and truly do it's just that of of the ways in which i spend my downtime going to the app stores not really on that list or well casey reinstalling or installing new task manager every few weeks is kinda my job so that a lot now but yeah i understand i go to the app store a lot it's kind of a ocupation hazard for me too but steven one thing that you said really struck me which was you know the i think with a project like this it's helpful every now and then to just kinda step back and look at the longterm narrative of things like the app store and see what apple has done and where it's going and i think you're absolutely right that for a long time there wasn't a lot of change in the app store and i just published this morning the article about the business of making apps and selling apps on the app store and that's the thing that when i put together a time line really struck me was that it felt like for a long time apple is just trying to catch up with the unexpected popularity the app store that it was all infrastructure and making sure you know the apps downloaded and things worked and it wasn't until phil schiller took over and starting in two thousand sixteen they started doing things like rolling out a broader implementation of subscriptions in the search ads and a bunch of other things which you know i know that not everybody likes those things or agrees that the right direction for the app store but they are i think a sign that the app stores maturing and that we're seeing now is more of a policy change and kind of a manifestation of the direction that apple wants to take the app store in yeah i think that's really interesting especially as the the new this new approach spreads right so we see with iras twelve in apple books we see more of this sort of stuff coming you can see a world where this sort of editorial push into the mac but like what if we saw it in the apple store app what if apple applied this sort of work to the various parts of his business i think we will continue to see i'm not sure we're we're going to editorial tv os app store rest in peace but you know maybe you never know.
