"Devious Murray from eight yards out in the Saints go up 32 3 with 603 to play here in the fourth quarter. Wow, is disappointed on a couple levels in that. That our quarterbacks put us in this position that it puts our quarterbacks put the league in that position. You know there's their way count on them to be the leaders of the team and leaders of the offense and those guys made a mis steak and that that is disappointing. Followed Gresh on Twitter at the Real Gresh that's at the wheel Gresh. That's what it sounded like on the New Orleans Saints radio network earlier today in Denver, and then you heard a Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio. Basically saying, Yeah, our quarterbacks caused us to lose this game today Base clean. It wasn't because they were on the field. It was because none of the four rostered quarterbacks were available for today's game because of a breach of covert protocol, Finally out of the grass show, Coast coasts, Porter border and in America's hat, known as Canada. You have found the dress show here on CBS Sports Radio and CBS sports radio dot com. My lines are loaded whether you want to talk about a particular team or game coming out a week. 12 or my question, which is For the first time today, man. I bristled with the way the NFL handled the Bronco situation. Was there another move for the NFL? Should they have delayed the game to tomorrow? At least? And then done some of the rapid testing and see if one or two of those quarterbacks might have been available to go play for the Denver Broncos. Instead of the 31 3 beat down at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, where the Broncos had no chance of generating any offense. I looked it up earlier. Combined between the two teams. 25 combined throws 77 combined runs. I mean, it's like you went back to 1963 in the NFL. 855 to 1 to four, CBS. David and Buffalo on the Bills Final out of the grass show here on CBS. Sports Radio. David What's up? Hey, Rush. What's up, man? How you doing tonight? I am. I am okay. And your football team. It looks like they're gonna win a division. Yeah, man. First off, I'll get a good holiday and nice job sitting in for Rome on Thursday, man. So that was that was really cool. You got a man hope to see you and Sean Pendergast against soon in for Rome when he's on vacation, So that was awesome. You know, just jumping in talking about the bills here. I mean, today's the day in past years, you know, before McDermott showed up before Brandon being showed up, they were lost that game. They didn't play their best today. They had fumbles Josh Allen through a couple picks that weren't great. Um you know it, but the defense was solid. I mean, Herberts, probably the rookie of the year. Um, he said a great year. And you know the bills defense came to play on bit was a good, solid win after that loss, and I just look at this team right now. Don't look at it. The 40 Niners next week um, that who knows where that games can be played? And, you know, I just think this team right now is in a good spot. They're kind of Ah, You know, nobody's talking about him. We all know about Kansas City. We all know about the Steelers. They're really good. But this bill seems in a good spot for a young team and I just want the job that being in McDermott have done with this franchise there, unheralded. Nobody's talking about him. And who knows they could, you know, make a deep run here. I think David. I will say that I have worked in New England a long time. And even on this network, I've antagonized Buffalo Bills fans. It's funny. I was just telling Shep a story in the old Affair show about the former producer of Forell on the bench. Carver High, who has since moved on with Pharrell and Carver High's a Big Bills fan, and he didn't like me for a long time because I used to just crank on the bills constantly. I had the Hash tag celebrates September because that's what the bills used to do. Three and one for no. Here we go, and then they tank by the end of the year on these bills are different. There's no question Now, plus 17 in the point differential. You know, that's one of the things that I talk about every week and looking at to see really, how good your football team is. You know, the Cleveland Browns there 83 just like Buffalo Buffalo's plus 17 Point Differential browns or minus 21 in Point differential. Kind of tells the tale. Of the two seasons that each of those teams have had, But look Right now, If you said who's gonna be the final four in the A F. C I think most would go with the division winners. Or least e Division leaders right now can't City, Tennessee Pittsburgh Buffalo. Now I'll say this. I think Tennessee is a cut above. I think Tennessee has now entered the Pittsburg Kansas City category and Buffalo would be the leader of, say, Group B but between Buffalo, Miami, the Browns the Colts I don't know if you can definitively say here is one through four in that matchup, and by the way right now. In the A F. C. The Steelers were get the buy. If the playoffs started today, the Chiefs would match up against Hang on here. Let me just click on conference to make this a little easier on myself. 1234567 so right now would be chiefs on the Colts. The Titans and the Dolphins and the Bills and the Browns. Those would be your playoff matchups. As of right now, with Kansas City getting the buy. Maybe something that be a buffalo in Cleveland. My goodness. Tennessee Miami, you'd.

the college football picture getting themselves an invite to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on new year's day stunning maybe that's a good word to start with your our conversation it was absolutely stunning I know that there are a whole lot of people that gave the ducks a great chance tonight it was all the talk about you told and whether or not they would be in the playoffs and that answer was a resounding no there were a lot of questions coming in about Utah schedule who they really played and also this question showed up in a big way tonight as you told was exposed in a lot of areas by the ducks in this office of wine for Morgan they've been talked about a lot this season I think they're one of the best in the country they played a heck of a football game here tonight and CJ ever del ran right behind them eighteen carries two hundred eight yards three touchdowns an outstanding effort why this run game tonight for the ducks let's talk about you are Oregon's defense tonight as well because you talk came into this football game top ten not only defensively but often simply too I don't think we should underestimate the value of the way the organs defense played here tonight as well no you're totally right in a situation where they played great over three for Utah on third down was he on fourth downs three huge stops at Utah came up with and then not to mention two interceptions right teller home we only had two interceptions coming into this game and they had two more night against this ducks defense for nineteen total on the year they played great on both fourth down all of a sudden what could have been a close game turned into a blog and well Lisa makes a playoff format pretty simple person for the committee on yeah yeah no doubt yeah you know that being said you taught was one of the teams still in contention for college football playoff spot do you suppose would so much on the line they were feeling it'll be a bit I I do think there was a something of a fact you're gonna play tight I wish he upsets all the time at this time of year throughout the years you go back to remember one no West Virginia based in a playoff spot lined up and sealed off they did do was beat it is a thirty one point favorite and they lost the game out right and all of a sudden they were out of the playoffs so teams plan tight do struggle at the end of the year impresses of Justin Herbert I'm not really good first half it out on the third quarter but then came back in and had a good not fourth quarter when you're taking on a Utah defense of wind you're going to be a little nervous but I thought he had a really good first half no doubt organ puts thirty seven points on the board more from Phil Steele as we take a look at championship Saturday later in the show.

"Well and the magician part of it is right because when you think about what we saw last night and this is really what you see from the best of the best of the best in quarterbacks absolute control and the ability to make every play and I know that sounds so simple but you think about what you see from young quarterback so often you see the ability there to run around and find spectacular ways to make plays that's part of that. what happens though is at some point the lights which goes on and they're able to do the same things but they make it look easy or when they do it always talk about that music right there the best musicians are guys that can play things that are incredibly difficult make it look easy while they do it. that's what we see from the best quarterbacks how many times have you seen Aaron Rodgers basically done and all of a sudden he just what does a little bit and with what looks like very little energy or work all of a sudden he's flick of the ball and it's going to the exact right spot we were reminded last night that that's where Russell Wilson is he's in this category that allows him to to do incredible things in the movement over with his feet seven to make time to extend place also to make the right reads but he does all of it and he looks so effortless when he does it it it's a reminder that he has control and maybe that's the thing that I'm constantly searching for from quarterbacks is the ability to have both playmaking ability and control in every situation we see these great moments from guys like maker may feel but the difference between the way we perceive Baker Mayfield today in the way we perceive batch of homes is the same thing we always say the patch of homes is cool under pressure white because it all looks easy when he does it and I understand the batch of moms is doing his story things I'm not taking anything away from that but we just take it for granted the fact that Russell Wilson is more in that category than in the category that we like to put him in sometimes which is just another very good quarterback Russell Wilson last night is that line in and of itself seventeen and twenty three two hundred and sixty eight yards four touchdowns well let's remember that through five games career high in completion percentage career I'm passing yards career high in yards per attempt career high in passing touchdowns the Seahawks are relying on Russell Wilson more than ever he's pushing the ball down the field more than ever and through all of it he looks better than ever I'll admit that I'm part of the problem I made my of my top five this week and I didn't put the Seahawks in it and I keep looking at the game last night as I was watching it and trying to figure out what it is that I've seen from the same to the cowboys it makes me think that there are better football team top to bottom today than the Seahawks are. in all this is gonna be the operation of the NFL you're gonna have good teams take strange losses that's a trend we've seen this year so how do we take any winter loss and react to it the right way how do we take any when our loss and not make it's only the beginning of a dynasty or the end of an era that's going to be the challenge we have but if there's any reminder and what we saw last night from Seattle that reminder is Seattle is a spectacular football team and on any given Sunday anybody can beat anybody I understand that but on any given Sunday that Seahawks team can absolutely win a Superbowl Russell Wilson should be higher in the MVP conversation the guys up to go over Gola going to remember their live in Dallas in the house of blues if you're in Dallas go check him out they'll continue to break down the Thursday night football game and Monday night at major league baseball post season hasn't been first and last thanks for hanging out with me on ESPN radio.

"Nineteen targeting. Those guys for two hundred and twenty eight yards and the patriots come away with a win dotty. Good day for the Rams and Jerry gov. We're gonna talk a little bit more about that. As Jeff Miller. Fred hubner. We get a chance now to talk with a guy that is the senior writer for ESPN football NFL nation follows the Denver Broncos, and he's going to have some fun this year. We will talk about that. Also as we bring in Jeff leg walled. And Jeff wasn't exactly the prettiest of games. But what were your thoughts about Super Bowl fifty three yesterday? I don't think you can. Miss that you had two of the most tenured longest standing better defensive guys opposite sidelights. So for me. I actually thought that was pretty cool to watch Wade Phillips and and Bill Belichick go at it. And you know, again for me. I liked it. Because it took it took a something different for the patriots to win because they made that game into something. I don't think people expected, and they did it because that was probably their best chance to win it. I think it's well said, Jeff it's one of those things where at this point in twenty one thousand nine hundred Super Bowl fifty three halfway through the year. Everyone's talking about that Rams chief shootout and wondering if you can still win defensive slugfest, and maybe we shouldn't be surprised at this point when Bill Belichick gives us a game plan that we didn't expect. But boy, it certainly looks like Sean McVeigh was unprepared for what Bella check had laid out for him. Yeah. I don't even know if you can say unprepared. I think one guy has just been in that game with all that comes with it nine times, you know, they can do Super Bowl week in their sleep. You know, other teams are worried about how are they gonna do their tickets? And when the families are coming in and all that other stuff and the patriots just do it. I mean for them, it is a normal, wheat and. You know, I like to tell people I don't think you can win the game on Wednesday. But you can sure lose it. And and I think that happens in the Super Bowl, I think the moment gets bigger and bigger as the team goes through the week and the team that just handles being at the event the best often wins. And I I will say I think this is the forty six time that the a team that finished in the top ten in scoring defense as won the Super Bowl. And you know, the tail of the five hundred point teams continues to be told. I mean, you know, there were three five hundred point teams this year in the final four in in the conference championship games. There were three five hundred point teams. None of the three won the Super Bowl. And you those five hundred point team makes you the highest one of the highest scoring teams all time, you know, there's only been twenty. Two in only four of those teams have won the Super Bowl, which I think is remarkable. But it continues to be the case. The patriots were the only team that did not score five hundred points in the final four. And there was a Super Bowl champ. Jeff Wald from ESPN joining us here on ESPN one thousand Jeff Meller, Fred Hubner, we're going to hear this. I know that apparently they got physicals coming up at either today or tomorrow by Todd Gurley all week long. They tried to tell us that he was healthy. But ten Carey's what he did when he had those carries it. There's gotta be something wrong physically with him. Isn't there? Well, no, you know, you keep around the league you keep hearing. There's some kind of meniscus issue in the knee, which I I will say a lot of players have played with in the past. And then you get that cleaned up at the end of the season. So wouldn't shock me to hear something done? But I thought when he ran the ball. He looked pretty good. I I just think that again. I think sometimes these coaches who play this, you know, the so-called wide open way, I think sometimes they just won't run the ball when they should. I mean, the saints would be in the Super Bowl or would have been in the Super Bowl had. They simply run the ball three times and kicked the field goal at the end of that game. And then the Rams I thought didn't didn't give it a chance. You know that the game was going at a pace where you could keep trying to run the ball because it was clear Goff was uncomfortable. With what the patriots were doing. And the patriots were consistently getting into golf. It's his first Super Bowl. I think it demanded that they try to run the ball more than they did. And I I think to me that is a coaching decision. Because even if girly is is not feeling great. You could still send C J Anderson to run the ball or something. They. Coulda done. And and they just didn't do it. Jeff. I'm curious Jared Goff. Obviously did not play very well nineteen of thirty eight yesterday. It was it was his first opportunity in a Super Bowl. Do you think that this is more a reflection of a little bit of deer in the headlights from that first big game? Or are you concerned about Jared Goff going forward in terms of his ability to elevate? The Rams play. I think even coming into the into the draft. He was far better as most quarterbacks are he was far better. When he got to his I read and got the ball out. You know, the book on them around the league is make him make him sort of pull the ball back after the first read make him go through its progressions. And you know as a college quarterback, he he was sacked more than eighty times. And that's a really high number for college quarterback. And usually that. You know on one hand will speak to okay who's blocking forum and how good were they? And but it also speaks to a guys willingness to move the ball on time. And and I think. You know, sometimes you can hold it to try to make a play. But I think when he's got in trouble as a college quarterback. And a pro quarterback is when he gets deep deep in the counts as it were. And I think he's he's got to be a rhythm passer. And he's got to get the ball out more quickly. And I think you kinda learn that as you go, but you you have to make the conscious effort to do it. And that's that's where he's at right now. That's that's the only way his games going to advance from from where it is. And it is the only way you're going to beat us a good team in a big game. Because best teams aren't gonna let you hold the ball. Even Brady when they've lost in the play offs like to the Broncos in two thousand fifteen it's when you know, the Broncos made Tom Brady come off the I read so it happens to everybody. And and that's the work. He's gotta do right now on the other side Julian Edelman named the MVP he had ten catches Auburn forty one yards. And they showed him quite often. It's not like he runs routes. He gets to a spot and then just pushes off and finds an opening, and I would I was watching. And I'm saying to myself is that something other receivers can do in the NFL other small slack guys can do or is it just a a relationship. That he has with Brady that makes it so I don't want to say easy. But it sure looked easy for him yesterday. Yeah. And I you know, part of that speed a good slot receiver. Brandon stokely. It was a really good slot receiver for the colts. And the Broncos Brandon Stokely told me one time to say about a slot receivers. He's gotta know the offense as well. As the quarterback because the the choices are made really fast in there. You know? The receiver's got gotta decide quickly in the quarterbacks gotta decide quickly. So that that's what you're really seeing. He knows what Brady's looking at on each of those plays. So he can get to the spot. I mean, he knows what that the defensive look is because he studied. And he knows the exact spot. Brady's gonna want him. And those were the only guys who can survive consistently in the slot or the guys who do that. Because there is no time you can't wait for the guy to come clear like you could on the outside. So I think that's just more of you know, part of the job description and the guys who are good at it. Just just know what they're looking at from the defense. And they know more importantly, they know what the quarterback is seeing. So they can do what he wants them to ESPN NFL senior writer, Jeff while joining us here on ESPN one thousand in Jeff knows a thing too about who deserves to go into the pro football hall of fame as he is a voter, Jeff. Before we get to this year's class. I guess throw throw maybe some cold water. I know all those hot takers out there who want to potentially elevate Julian Edelman into the hall of fame after his MVP performance in Super Bowl. Fifty three. I know that's probably gonna come up for a while. But you know, my knowledge is, you know? Ever done that kind of study on them yet. But I don't think he's been name to a single Pro Bowl in his career and to one thousand yard seasons. You know, I just I don't know even even as playoff work if that would be enough when you're talking hall of fame. So I don't I don't think you could just be. You know, kind of a really good player in the regular season or a really good player in the playoffs. I think there has to be some combination there. But I think what gets it started as, you know, the patriots for all those championships, you know, six now the list of potential hall of famers, isn't really that long. When you look at you know, they're double digit players from the Packers championship teams way back from the Steelers championship teams. You know, the raiders of the seventies went to just one Super Bowl, and they have double digit people in the hall of fame. So I think that's what kind of Spurs. It is you look at the patriots. You see all the trophies? But the list of potential hall of famers, isn't that long? And so I think guys like all men and Welker are gonna come up because people are going to be saying, well, they want all these championships. You know, how they do it? If they didn't have any hall. Thanks players. The guys that did get in Tony Gonzalez. Ed Reed champ Bailey. Kevin Milwaukee player wise out whether any guys that you thought that just missed out the probably should have made it this year and probably will next year. You know, I it was like really deep list of finalists. You know? I think in the end you could've picked almost any five and had a really strong class. But I think of the group that got left out. I personally think Steve Hutchinson. Steve atwater. I think are two of the strongest candidates and. You know and talent fan because well, you gotta save two linemen kind of the unglamorous. Folks. But I think as players I think those three guys might be the the best players of of the guys who didn't get in this year. Also interesting about this year's class. You've got three defensive backs going in in law. Read and champ Bailey people in Chicago, I saw were asking me on Twitter all week. Jeff does this actually help or hurt Charles peanut tillman's case when he comes up because he's a contemporary of guys like Tilana champ Bailey. He doesn't have as many pro bowls. It's both those guys, but he has more turnovers created, so do you think Charles Tillman? He I guess he's going to be unique case what is your feel for someone like Charles Tillman in his hall of fame possibilities going down the road here. Yeah. For guy like him. You know, you just be a matter of you've got all the the place where the you know, he gets the ball out. It's just a matter of you know, what are the people who faced him say. And and you know, what the comments of teammates in those things tend not to carry as much weight as as opponents or respected offensive coordinators who had to face that type of thing. So just be a matter of some of those people stepping forward. But you know, I, you know, when you think of guys like Bailey and Dion. That's that's kind of a glamour lockdown corner. And I think it would just be a matter of you know, how did he do and those kinds of situations. And what are we recall that and looking at the game video and seeing but for the bears. I've I've always thought JIMBO covert should be in the hall of fame. And and it's just been a mystery to me, I I've often vote 'em. When we when we go to the twelve. Eighty five the and even to the list of fifteen finalists voted for JIMBO consistently. But that's that's an all decade player. Who should definitely be in the hall of fame. One last thing, Jeff, we'll let you get out of here. We really appreciate it. We have the last couple of years had the enjoyment of listening to Vic Fangio when he would meet the media on Thursdays. And the one thing we found out was that he was a very honest guy, and I wouldn't necessarily say he would throw people under the bus. But he would definitely not lied anybody. And he would pretty much answering straight question directly. You haven't had much of an experience with him. But how how things in? What are you looking forward to Vic Fangio now taking over in Denver? Well, yeah, I think he's he's just the guy Elway wanted. So you know, I I contend it's the most out of the box hire anybody made be everybody was running after the thirty something offensive wizard in the Broncos went and hired a sixty year old defensive coordinator, I first head coaching gig. So I think he's ready for it. You know, it's just a matter of running the whole show that, you know, suddenly, you're in charge of you know, what color the hallways are too. You know? Including the football. So but just in. I think he's ready for it. I think he's planned for it. You know, this is a kind of a football crazy, you know region. They've they've sold every ticket here since the AFL NFL merger in nineteen seventy. So I think he's getting used to that, you know, being the head guy and that kind of situation where everything you say is such a big deal..

"But it was a gutsy call by Peyton at backfired on him. The saints end up getting the field goal to go up by three. Here's the thing. Even after the bad call Saint still under chances. They could've stopped the Rams from getting their own field goal. Forty eight yards at the end of regulation. They got the ball and overtime but breeze gets hit by Fowler. And Josh Johnson or John Johnson picks it off and Greg the leg fifty seven yarder. Fifty seven yarder. Unbelievable. It really was Josh Reynolds. Hey, be Gerald Everett. All stepping up making plays for the Rams Todd Gurley. Did very little I mentioned sue and for the saints. Michael Thomas had a quiet game. But Alvin Kamara stepped up as the ram tried to take away. Michael Thomas, terrific, terrific game overtime. Just unfortunately marred by one of the worst calls we've ever seen ever. And in the AFC championship game. Obviously, you're in Kansas City. You were there patriots over the chiefs thirty seven thirty one the ninth Super Bowl appearance for bell. Check and Brady not bad in terms of the press box. Crude Bry, you know, there's so many more media there when it's a conference championship game. I mean, it's totally a zoo and packed which is pretty intense for a conference championship game like that they had a sort of coffees and soda. They even have ice tea and lemonade which I like I made a couple of weeks that'll Arnold Palmer's. So that was nice before the game while I was watching ram saints, and then the food came out, and there was initially a gigantic line. And I thought oh my gosh this amateur hour, but they had four no four different lines. You could go through to get the food. So they had to table set up. A new could go on either side of both tables and the food was pretty quick. So they had salad. Which was nice. And then they had pulled chicken like buffalo pulled buffalo chicken with buffalo seasoning at burgers, they had baked beans. So I went I didn't need the cobs. So I just went with the chicken and lots of it. And then I went with a whole half a plate of beans and through a burger on top, maybe even to cut it up and had burger and beans. It was delicious. They did have cookies and brownies and stuff as well. So it's pretty solid. I would say there was the people that when I post on Twitter Instagram at Rostock Renna fell weren't real impressed. But I thought it was pretty good. They didn't have barbecue. Which I think a lot of people would have liked, but the flipside is a lot of people go out for barbecue the night before. Right. So I think maybe they think. Yeah. You know, people be sick the barbecue they had and they before so you never know as for. So or give me Argumenty, plus a minus even in the photographer room, they had ham and cheese sandwich. With a nice deli mustard on it on a pretzel. So at halftime, I crushed a nice ham and cheese sandwich on a pretzel. While it was that that gives them the name is it was b plus a minus that bumped it up to an a minus as for.

"Then that was I just sat back in off. Because this is the one thing we did see it and you brought it up in Indianapolis. We saw it when they had to gain. They jumped up to two game division lead. I thought they just sort of mailed in Indianapolis because they didn't really have to win that game to win the division. But they mailed it in and they got mailed right out of town in a bag because they got run over one hundred seventy eight yards total, but not to seventy three not one hundred seventy in the first half. So I still haven't recovered from that I was done founded by that. And that was obviously compounded by the fact that in the first half, it was a twenty seven halftime. Lead and could have been worse. You could argue it also could have been a little closer without that third and fourteen all time horrendously ticky tack call hands to the face on Byron Jones. And then the even more horrendous in the grasp call undock when he was in the grasp of his own offensive lineman Lyle Collins while call the way over there, anyway, he tackle clearly throwing open. So he threw him in the open, and it costs them at least three points and maybe seven points. So despite all that then we get to the second half. And I gotta tell you can run tell this one. I think the tells working all that will in the second half because my cowboy started to click. They started to shut down the run a little bit a lot more than they did in the first half. Because Dallas outgained the Rams one eighty nine to one sixty eight in the second half and won at fifteen to ten. So something started to happen in the second half of the one six eight one hundred and three on was on the ground one hundred yards. They had in the second hand it still. It was way better than one hundred seventy in the first half because you can live with the hundred in the second half because you outscored them and you actually had chances to win the game when you had fourth and short the first play of the fourth quarter, and you get stuffed with the most pathetically predictable. Call in the history of calls golf took to the end of the game. Okay. They could've they could've added some more to it. Okay. Absolutely and guests. They actually added onto it at the very end after Jared Goff was allowed to run for eleven yards on third and seven from the twenty eight which was the absolute dagger play in the whole game. Because you're about to get the ball back with two minutes left. And you're still only down eight point you do anything my quarterback who led the NFL and game winning drives in the fourth quarter and overtime over the last three years. I think I like my chances your chances going into the gate. So what do I think happened? Maybe there are some secret tells going on what I think happened. What happened? I think my defense just didn't show up for the first half. Because we've seen this consistently happened with Jason Garrett coached teams, I'm gonna say it again, Jason GARRETT'S nice guy. He coached clap. You know, he he's going to be exactly himself every day every week every month of the year. Well, you know that okay. You know, what you're going to get because he can't motivate his way out of a wet paper bag. But in this case you need to get your defense ready. Maybe why the whole focus. During the week. We have to stop the pass. We know we can stop the run. But we gotta stop the pass. So what happened against Green Bay? So lately, Jason gears had two big playoff losses. One to Aaron Rodgers and one at the Rams what happened in both of those games that reminded you of the other game. What happened then play Willer?.
