Are Beans a Protein or Carbohydrate?

"Hello and welcome to the nutrition. Diva podcast. i'm your host monterey nagel and in this episode. i'm going to answer. The eternal question are being of protein or carbohydrate food. Vegetarians and vegans lean pretty hard on beans as a source of protein. And even those of us who sometimes eat meat but also enjoy plant based meals will often build our meat free meals around some sort of legume and that's because they contain more protein per serving than most other plant foods but the nutritional profile of legumes is very different from animal protein sources eggs meat fish and chicken get anywhere from fifty to ninety five percent of their calories from protein with the rest usually coming from fat leg. Hume's on the other hand only get about a quarter of their calories from protein and the rest is mostly carbohydrate. Soybeans are a bit of an exception being higher in both protein and fat and lowering carbohydrate than other legumes. Peanuts which are technically legumes are another exception. They're even higher in fat than soybeans and lower in protein than most beans. Perhaps because of this peanuts are generally categorized as nuts for the purposes of dietary guidelines despite their botanical classification. So can you get enough protein from beans well. Although we think of beans as being a protein food the truth is that they provide a lot less protein per serving and per calorie than animal proteins. A three ounce serving of cooked chicken breast for example provides about twenty six grams of protein and about one hundred and sixty calories. The standard serving size for beans is a half of cup of cooked beans and that provides just eight grams of protein for around one hundred twenty calories so we would need to eat a lot more beans to get the same amount of protein as we get from meet. It would take two cups of black beans. That's about four hundred and eighty calories to get the same amount of protein as you'd get from three quarters of a cup of chicken breast for example so for every gram of protein and beans. You're also taking in about three grams of carbohydrate and a lot more calories now although beans are relatively high in carbs these are some of the healthiest types of carbs. The carbohydrate portion of beans is a combination of fiber and starch but about half of the starch in beans is actually what we refer to as resistant starch that means it resists digestion and absorption in the small intestine and goes on to function much like fiber in the gut the fiber and the resistant starch in beans feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut. They promote regularity they helped to modulate our blood sugar response to food. They also increase our satiafaction and society after meals helping us feel full with fewer calories. Perhaps that's why people who eat. More beans generally have healthier body weights and lower waist. Circumference beans also contain fido sterols. These are plant compounds that are shaped so similarly to cholesterol that they can occupy the cholesterol receptors in ourselves and regular being consumption is linked with better cholesterol profiles. So beans have a lot going for them. But let's talk about how they fit into your diet because when we build a meal around beans instead of meat which is a great idea. We may need to make some other adjustments to our plates because beans contain both protein and starch. It might make sense to reduce other sources of starch to compensate for that. So if you're having black-eyed peas instead of blackened catfish for dinner. Perhaps you skip the bread or the potatoes. Beans and rice of course are a classic combination in part because of the complementary amino acid profile. But you could have a smaller portion of rice with your beans instead of half a cup of beans and a cup of rice. For example you could switch the proportions on that double up on the beans ordered to bump up the protein and reduce the rice to half a cup and keep in. Mind that if you're trying to match the protein content that you'd get from meet. You may not have as many calories to spend on other foods due to the extra calories that are riding along with that plant to protein.

The Walmart Haul Episode

"All right. We're GONNA jump right in. It's a Walmart Hall. Which means we have lots of products that are ready to be chewed and sipped and swallowed starting with the above all of the above. Not necessarily in that order. But first we have tiller and hatch pressure cooker meals chicken Tortilla Stu so basically these are frozen bags of food items that you throw a pressure cooker or these days. We know it as an instant pot and so it's already made so he just throw the what the contents of the bag into the pressure cooker and IT COOKS UP PRETTY QUICKLY. So this one says only gives you stove top directions to which is nice. I had this. Oh you add water to the pressure cooker. Then you add the sauce than the rest five minutes and then when the timer goes off wheat four minutes. This is basically a nine minute meal. But then but you do have to heat up. Depressurize your pressure cooker. So I wonder if it's really quicker than using stove-top but well I don't know but I'm interested to try it because one cup has one hundred ninety calories four grams of fat and four smartphones points. I know you've got that fast because I'm starving fun and have lunch. Mike is not eat lunch. He's about to chew on Jamie's hand but now we're going to try this. It looks very soupy but this is a chicken stew that was made in a pressure cooker. Or in a I'd like you pass Utensil. Thank you so much wonder. What the origins of the word like Stu like as far as you know what you're doing that's STU maybe names to studio originally it make sense doing it Well it's really good. All right that chicken. This tastes like homemade. Mom's chicken suit and there's corn in it. It's very mild but it's flavorful. This is really great. Comfort food totaling. I love that it's not too salty. Yeah what's sodium? Like on six sixty for a cup so it's not low but let's put that over cauliflower. Rice I love. It was like chicken tortilla soup but with corn beans. Yeah so it's really delicious. It's unexpectedly tasty. We're off to a good start. Okay next up. The product is called mighty spark all natural premium cuts of chicken PROSCIUTTO WITH TOMATO. Basil and garlic seasoned ground chicken so this is basically whereas the packaging of that. Is it a It looks like you buy it in. Like the butcher section where you would buy like genealogy so it's ground chicken smells so good smell it. That's already been flavored. We just throw it in my rankin. Who's probably with like Marinara sauce or something? Who took a big hunk of that? Yeah probably but it already has like what's in it seasoned Rochetta Wise. It's tomato Basil Garlic That's really I love that you don't like about it. It's a little different like sometimes we do the shortcut thing where we Italian seasoning. This doesn't hit you over the head in the same way. Like you really taste the basil or things. He's so good you're probably instead of making ground meat out of it you can do like a meatball or something or Turkey ball. Yeah yeah or like a really fun Burger. I love that. Like sometimes they'll name it something like Bouchette and then you taste it. And you're like they should've just called it tomato garlic. I like that really delivers on the shuttle flavor. Absolutely it does and four ounces. One hundred sixty calories eight grams of fat for smart points to for to that is excellent. All right next up. We have hunts chilly kit. Just add meat. Ready in twenty minutes. So it's brought to you by. Hunts the people make ketchup? You know the people who make the the other ketchup. And it's a chilly kit. So this is a little bit. It's a smart thing you it's ready in twenty minutes you everything you need. Except for the ground meat of choice we decided to make it with extra lean ground beef and as it is without the beef or any of the meat. Three quarters of a cup is one hundred calories no fat and three smart points as package so it has like the little tomato the sauce and the beans. So we're GONNA try it already semi seasoning. I think That everything I've rhythm Kinda tastes like catcher. I was GONNA say days like they're less good ketchup. I kind of was I. Wish hines me this. What did hunt do before they did? They just automatically become tiniest competition or they have something else besides the ketchup tomato people. Yeah think they do a lot of tomato? This is not an this is not the. It's good but it's not great. It's a little like sour acidic facing. I think it might be good for kids for effort forever not forever viral with that. Yeah I don't know anyway. Let's move on next one. I'm kind of excited about because I saw this as I went up to the kitchen. And the back. They were prepping. It see cuisine smart indulgences Tortilla crusted. Wild Alaska pollock. I would say Alaskan but it's called the Alaska pollock. I guess and the thing is I think seek was in listened to us or took our idea and ran with it but basically we have made a Tortilla in crusted chicken. This is a Tortilla incrusted. Pollock which I didn't realize anyone ever called anything pollick. I thought pollock was just like fake crab the other white meat even the other whitefish before you tasted the story with C. Cuisine. They're the ones that made the salmon that we didn't like didn't they? Make one thing we liked and one thing we know I think this is like their redemption. I love it. You know what I like about it. It's like soap crispy and crunchy so it's Each belay has two hundred and forty calories. Six grams of fat seven smartphones. That's really tasty. That's like the best fish on the planet it is. It does taste like a fish. Stick to air. Fox did we airfreight or BEGA. How do we do it? I bet we have tortilla crested wild Alaska Pollack with smart ingredients. Oh Yeah do you see all the different things that goes on the cross. Yeah we named him so they are Yellow Corn Black Bean Jalapeno Chili tomato lime cumin Cilantro. Paprika they did not dial it in. I want more of that. It's Great Roy. Wheels aren't turning when the cameras. There are no cameras but when when the audio wasn't rolling I'll be eating more about if we had cameras rolling. Do you think we would do our little dance. In the beginning of the episode with the Music Lisa kind of has like a like a ninety s like Humpty Hump kind of thing. I don't have it. I don't know what you're no. No you did this did that. Jamie Jamie Shuffle. Bought my head your head. Okay all right. We should have cameras rolling. Okay moving on. This is an exciting product for a knife. I WANNA cut these. This is fun because I grew up as a white castle fan. I'm a New Yorker. My Dad and I like if we were sometimes alone on father's Day I don't know why we would be but a couple of years I remember. We went to white castle father's day when was like seven. I don't know where my mom and my siblings were. But we were there now. They're making Vegan White Castle. Black beans sliders stats are incredible but little little side. Note here about me. Because I'm from the West Coast. I've never been to white castle. The only white castle I know of is the frozen white castle.

"eight grams" Discussed on 77WABC Radio

"Creatine phosphate reserves so that our brain is chronically in its high energy state that's how we can think really really well so researchers have done some amazing research here they found that creatine actually helps the brain to utilize oxygen they found that vegetarians who took creatine scored better on intelligence tests most seniors had better memory they had better number recall they had better spatial recognition in all its in only two weeks and then another as you walk into a room you put your keys down here are they now but spatial recognition that was supported in five days I love this one five days of eight grams of creatine just five days supported mental tasks in subjects that were getting rapid fire question J. scientists were asking them math questions in science questions over and over and over they found the folks are creatine didn't fatigue is quickly mentally get this a group of people that were kept up for twenty four hours to see how creatine affected that area of health their mood state better and their their memory was sharp and they just were able to do things are twenty four hours when other people couldn't do it and you know you like to call it like your creatine reserves if you think about your energy a little bit like a bank account you know if you start running and using and spending all the money in that bank account you have like a deficit situation you would think after being you know push for twenty four hours people would have been absolutely exhausted they were probably tired but the people on creaking were less tired because when you boost those reserve right you've got something that you can use as fuel you said earlier we make less as we age but also a lot of people don't eat as much meat and certainly and that's where you can get creatine from its in meat if you're a vegetarian you basically get no creatine right I'm looking at a study where they looked at brain function in vegetarians they found anywhere from twenty to fifty percent improvement in some measures of memory and intelligence on these cognitive tests so it is absolutely crucial like chance said to make sure that your stores of creatine right R. S. filled up as possible and the easiest way to do it is with well good supplement like ever strong you know here's a study that British journal of nutrition this goes back to two thousand eleven the influence of creatine supplementation on the cognitive functioning of vegetarians and omnivores just do what you were saying J. you get you're creating in this study they had a little more creatine twenty grams a day in vegetarians better memory but for both with the omnivores and vegetarians right right now look one of the biggest concerns people have as they start to get older is losing their muscle mass it's called sarcopenia it's a normal age related issue you get older your you tend not to be as strong as you used to be but it could be problematic in terms of allowing you to live life to its fullest to be able to do the things you want to do to list things maybe to play with your grand kids just carrying groceries becomes a little bit of a of a of a challenge sometimes as you get older so Dr Levin for people just tuning in let's recap real quick what is creatine and how can it help people especially older people build up that strength and vitality because it works so first let's just identify the problem you just talked about sarcopenia because yes we I see this all the time as people get older their legs get skinnier the lose their their **** off muscles there gluteal muscles is just very common we all know this but here are the facts beyond that age age of fifty your muscle tissue is losing strength to the tune of about one point two to one point five percent a year yeah I hit over fifty you're actually losing muscle tissue to the tune of about point eight percent per year so what are the ones we're losing muscle every year and the muscle we have is not as strong however when you supplement with creatine I'd like you to supplement with ever stronger as I feel it's the finest creatine out there it's our help formulate the thing but when you supplement with her every strong formula and you feed the muscle tissue this ever strong this creatine it helps the muscles in many ways it energizes the muscle so that you're more able to do more work if you're a gym person if your call for if you're a tennis player anything you're doing you can maybe do that better because your your muscles are in their high energy state but it draws water into the muscle it hydrates the muscle nicely and started just fine this helps the muscles satellite cells to actually grow more muscle tissue right it also has an impact on our own or in a and D. N. A. it actually helps with muscle synthesis and in terms of something called catabolism which is the breakdown of muscle it actually reduces the rate at which we could tabloids on muscles were maintaining more of our muscle and and you see yourself why isn't everybody using this write downs too good to be true right I have this conversation with my patients all the time they've heard these myths these urban legends creatine is bad for you guess what it's nonsense there are a lot of misconceptions about this and yes this does come out of the world of sports nutrition but it is quickly transcended that world and is now literally one of the best evidence based ingredients that everybody can use and it's so much better understood than it once was and it does things for us I mean it literally build strength what else is out there that can single handedly increase your strength and muscle size I'm shaking my head right now it's just something not I think I wouldn't want to be without this I take this every single day on days and I'm hitting the gym I take extra I'll tell you what the international Olympic committee in nineteen ninety eight said yes our athletes can use creatine creatine is allowed in college sports and not only is it safe but the gains that people get in terms of strength muscle mass lean muscle men and women are so meaningful that some people thought maybe this is an unfair advantage and it could be considered you know like taking a performance enhancing drug it's not it's safe it's healthy it's good for you and it makes a difference it's most most people aren't competing in sports we all wanted unfair and that's whatever strong and good leader right for people who are listening again ever strong comes in two types of formula is the most popular or the ever strong tablets it's a couple of tablets a day you've got the creep your creatine that's the elite creatine that we get from Europe easy to swallow tablets with added to that some very in you know in in important cofactors the vitamin D. the Aurora blue blueberries that are great for cognition support we've added there for fido bore on which is a plant based Boren also very good for the bone and joint health too and the joint health and of course the coffee berry this outstanding anti oxidants so you're gonna love the ever strong tablets we also have the ever strong powder a wonderful fruity berry flavor you just add water it goes down so easily and that's how you do it it's simple it works and we've got this thirty day nine ninety five starter bottle so we say put to the test see for yourself what a difference it can make you can I mean six years so it was when I want to stop you know we are because I'm just I just walked in here so the ever strong for ninety five and and the B. twelve anything else to the way it works is when you call you've got a nine ninety five starter bottle that's a thirty day supply of ever strong I mean I went over this I just was speaking to Marvin in the back so this is the way people are going to be coming out and they said we want to do free shipping of course because we don't want you to spend more than ten Bucks and then because the loves the B. twelve melts that's a free gift today that's racially a twenty dollar value so that's your second free bottle today yes rivers along and the B. twelve you get the free shipping at all well if you're one of the first thousand callers that's our thing on the weekends we we tried and sent people to call right away so you don't forget make sure you one of the first thousand callers and you're gonna be able to get this entire package for less than ten Bucks I'm gonna give out that phone number in a few minutes but before I do have your pen ready before I do I want to get into some of these testimonials almost universally glowing so chan why don't you read a few of the I'm gonna read you found are one of my favorite this is Kathy from California because this represents so many people in our audience she writes I'm sixty years old recently I had significant weight loss that reduced my muscle mass and strength ever strong is great in less than two weeks I have more strength in my hands I can open jars now I also think my muscle mass has improved love ever strong five stars that's awesome I'm gonna read one right here I have Brent from Ontario Canada he says I've been working out since age thirty five closing in on sixty years old I felt getting older I needed an edge ever strong is my age almost one bottle in I already feel like a younger man with my H. back and stronger I love it I feel awesome J. we have about a minute left here to share with people that ever strong blue is the sequel it is the latest innovation in the ever strong family these beautiful blue tablets we've added the Aurora blue blueberries all the way from Alaska we know how green berries or blueberries are often referred to as brain berries we're looking.

The stuff we are tempted to write off as forgettable are the things that catapulted catapult us to unexpected rewards. I remember the day. Well no or maybe not so well but I can reconstruct it. I was in the kitchen feeling those first pangs of hunger that surface when you've already had lunch and it's not time for dinner and you can't focus or do anything much until you've had something to eat. I could have reached for an apple or a banana but my craving was for something salty salty artificially flavored and devoid of all nutritional value. I reached for the giant variety snack. Pack I bought IT COSTCO CUSCO A few weeks earlier. Only to realize with dismay that all the potato chips and Fritos were gone. The only thing left was cheese. He's it's if you haven't figured out where this is going by now. You haven't read today's Wall Street Journal. The story is on page. Eighteen eighteen. Three women are suing. Kellogg's the manufacturer of cheese it because they feel misled and they want justice one the plaintiffs Linda castle purchase cheese. It's approximately three times in two thousand thirteen from Grocer in Torrance California her lawsuit and her pursuit of justice stem from the assumption that her cheeses contain more whole grain than the label would lead one to believe so what you might be thinking who cares if Linda Castle but she sits and believe she was consuming a health food. There's a sucker born every minute. According to P. T. Barnum. But here's the caveat. The cheeses were labeled whole grain and and although the box explains that they contained five to eight grams of whole grain for each twenty nine grams. Serving the plaintiff felt deceived received. Mrs Castle and the other plaintiffs are seeking damages other monetary relief and declaration corey relief. Whatever whatever that means although a federal judge dismissed the case ruling that the whole grains wording was factually correct and the label would neither mislead nor deceive a reasonable consumer the? US Court of appeals has reversed the dismissal. Here's where there I come in and maybe you if you've eaten cheese it anytime in the past eight years the plaintiffs want a class action suit consisting the of anyone in the US or its territories who has bought cheeses eight since two thousand ten. According to The Wall Street Journal there there are thousands possibly millions of people who bought cheese. It's all of whom munched away happily without formal complaint. The more I think about it the better I remember that fateful day when I reach for the cheeses I can still hear the bag. Cellophane Russell smell the cheesy odor. Her Savor the crunchy junk food. Taste my husband probably qualifies for the Class Action Suit to the other day. He fished just a bag of cheez. Its with a two thousand one expiration date from the back of the Pantry. I forget how good these things are. He said digging digging in his fingers dusted with the Telltale Orange Stain. That is the bane of all cheese at eaters. Especially those who sit on white white couches. Maybe white couch owners should sue to forget all the list as you've read about how to get rich you don't need to wake up at five. Deliciousness With Pumpkin Flavor

"All right so so we are going to start today by testing out. We have a battle between Pumkin yogurts. We have three Pumpkin yogurts that we're gonNA try we have. Dan Enlightened Fit Pumpkin Pie. We have show Bonnie pumpkin spice and we have trader joes Pumpkin Greek Non Fat Yogurt so we're going to first start with the Dan enlightened fit fit which only has eighty calories. This is by far the lowest calorie of all no fat at all now. You know I'm a dirt so that's you loud that yogurt expert for the the people who don't know shorthand so this is. This is going to be interesting okay. I'm mixing it up the texture. It feels good. It feels nice and thick you know a lot of times. These like throwback old fashioned light yogurt or a little thinner. This is like a good textile and this was the only one of the three that's not Greek It's just regular our old. Dan Enlighten fit eighty calories bubby American younger. This is nice sweet. It's a little too sweet on board. Is it sweetened with yeah. It tastes me like tin cans probably aspartame or sucralose or a super-low super-low yell. It tastes little splendor riff but it's eighty calories and it's a pretty nice size yeah. It's not bad. Actually I don't I would say it serves a purpose you know at that is Greek Greek Greek well. That's a little thicker animals more sound this hour side. Um You know it doesn't have. I'M GONNA you're GonNa hear this like a broken record. I am very sensitive to clove so when things are overly clove it reminds me of going to the dentist dentist when I was a child but that didn't it didn't overdo it on the cloth. I thought it was nicely spiced with the sweetener was a little out of control. Say I think that your dentist should be fired for giving giving clove like my dentist had like marshmallow floride and it's not that it was part of the medicine was like it wasn't like it's like here's your clove-flavoured to face all right well. The next one is the pro trader Joe's Pumpkin Greek Non Fat Yogurt. This has one hundred thirty calories stories and twenty carbs and twelve grams of protein. The last one also twelve fourteen but I have to say the Calorie count is way higher on this fun. I'm looking forward to this. I bought actually about like four or five of them and I haven't had them because I couldn't cheat and have them before you guys home four It Zero Pumpkin really I think they forgot the pumpkin flavor. Are you just say cinnamon cinnamon light cinnamon taste almost glue. I would definitely not spend fifty. More calories is on this one. No I don't really usually trader. Joe's is a home run. Mike do you like it. I don't hate it but I definitely would love more Pumpkin but I like yogurt and it has a good texture that to me. It's all about texture. It does have good texture. Maybe you chopped up apples and a little more cinnamon your own pumpkin spice to it. Yeah I don't know I was like like that was unimpressive to me. This is Giovanni which is considerably thinner than the other two hundred and twenty calories. This is not nonfat and has two point five grams of fat still low. Oh Levin grams of protein so it's competing in the protein department much thinner. I'm much thinner and a little less full leans like some big scoop out there. You know what this tastes like to me like you know the icing on the top the Danish flavor almost like but it's it's specifically Danish flavored icing. I like the author Tasers all Pumpkin. That's great. That's the Best Trapani to me hands down the winner in the Yogurt Department. If you're in search of a Pumpkin yogurt the season stick with Giovanni I will say just my opinion shockingly. I liked the Dan enlightened fit even though like if you're sensitive to artificial sweeteners it's no but I can deal with Blenda. It was really yummy very very sweet but but definitely tasty good nicely spiced okay moving onto pancakes and waffles. We have yet another pumpkin battle. this is the time of year where all of these things are popping up on shelves this these two are actually this is going to be a good one because Kodiak cakes. I don't know what happened. They are taking the world by storm. Everybody loves Kodiak Cakes. They make a flap Jack and waffle mix in Pumpkin and flax flavor ten grams of protein a hundred and ninety calories serving two grams of fat. You can find these target and let me know Jamie if we have to tell people where the the yogurts are available but or they more mainstream and they're pretty mainstream obviously the trader. Joe's one is only at trader. Joe's the other ones are nationwide. Okay good so the Kodiak cakes her target and I don't know where else you get Kodiak hy-vee there's a store locator you can check out and there's some on Amazon but hurry up because it's low stock curry hurry okay and then the other one we're gonNA be trying Birch Benders Pumpkin Spice Paleo Pancake and waffle mix and those have one hundred forty calories a six grams of fat six grams of protein. Those are also a target so these are competing on the shelves at target and also at at home. It's great okay so let's go. We're going to start with the Kodiak cakes. I'm thinking perfect almost closer to me. Perfect love the look of Kodiak cakes and they're so fluffy they they make really good products and I think that the people like the Kodiak people are really cool. I met them like some food. Show on and these are just add water by the way Oh oh yeah you don't have to. I'm just going to use the back of my spoon to cut a little piece on. We're just a little. It's a little flat right yeah like a little soggy looking getting bigger than that to me. They don't taste so pumpkin but they're good. They're all of them. I never met a pancake. I didn't like Rome all right. I'm not a big pancake person. Those are just okay to me and I didn't have butter and Syrup Pancake like you did just recently when we were on our trip in Philadelphia the hotel that we stayed Pumpkin or their pancakes in the morning. We're not I mean. Can you really Count Hotel pancakes. Yes everything else they did. There was good. Oh all right. This is the Birch benders. It's lighter in color. The other one was dark on these feel like spongy kind of hope. They're better than the that syrup that we tried awesome. Oh that's right spongier. They do know there. Buttermilk pancakes are probably one of the best but these are not nearly as good as their buttermilk pancakes. These tastes like they have more fat oh they do. They have a lot more fat. They taste richer sick. They do tastes richer six grams of fat him giving a little bit too early six grams of protein. I don't know I have to be honest. I'd rather make my own. Don't we have like a recipe coming. It's coming out in a couple of weeks. It's the best those are phenomenal and I didn't know what it was going to run but they're they're way better than this on just okay. I liked the Birch benders better. What did you like better probably the bridge benders but that's because I'm reacting to the richness like all the VAT. I taste it but I love Kodiak everything so don't feel bad Kodiak people. We love you yeah. I think I'd do the bender okay. We ready to move onto bars. Let's go to the bar. We have bars and bars in bars ars but we we let we narrowed it down because there are a lot of pumpkin bars out on the market so we only have the Rx bar in Pumpkin spice which is a seasonal flavor and we we have the Lara Bar which is also a seasonal flavor in Pumpkin Pie. They're sort of comparably nutritional. they have com comparable. Mac rose to entrant in calories in the our expert two hundred calories in the Lara Bar. One has eight grams of fat. One has nine Lara bar is a little more fat fat five grams of fiber in the x bar four grams of fiber in the Lara Bar and the big difference is protein. The Rx Bar has twelve wapping grams of protein and Lara bar only has four. That's a big difference totally nuts and I'll give you some avail info while you open those up the Rx expires our at our expert dot com target whole foods trader Joe's

Here you gene, or gene shoemaker trained, astronauts and founded a new science born on April twenty eighth nineteen twenty eight Schumaker was one of the twentieth. Century's? Great minds, his work on impact craters affected, everything from Nasr's Apollo missions to the dinosaur extinction debate for his contributions to human knowledge, he was awarded the national medal of science by then president George H W Bush in nineteen Ninety-two, but a different honor eluded him shoemaker studied the moon from afar, but he often dreamed of climbing into a spacesuit and walking on its surface. Sadly, he never got the chance Addison's disease crushed his hopes of becoming an astronaut, but in nineteen Ninety-seven some of his ashes were laid to rest near the moon southern poll that made him the first and to date the only person to ever receive a lunar burial. It was a poignant epilogue to the man's career. Schumaker was a geologist by training and craters were one of his great passions. He helped confirm that the famous Barringer crater near flagstaff, Arizona crater that's five hundred seventy feet or one hundred seventy three meters. Deep was made by an asteroid impact. He also championed the hypothesis that another such impact killed last non avian dinosaurs sixty six million years ago and by mapping some of the craters on our moon. He revolutionized our understanding of its geology in nineteen sixty one the United States geological surveys set up an Astra geology research program shoemaker often considered the founding father of Astra geology was chosen to lead. It NASA would enlist his services to shoemaker joined future. Apollo astronaut on field trips to Barringer crater and other sites where he trained them to collect rock samples a perhaps seemingly simple skill set. But one would let them eventually bring home the first moon rocks humans ever saw and thus making all kinds of research possible. His work was instrumental to the discovery of the shoemaker Levy nine comet which struck Jupiter in one thousand nine hundred four one of the comments co-discoverers was Eugene's wife and fellow scientist Carolyn shoemaker cumulatively, gene. And Caroline discovered. One thousand one hundred twenty five asteroids and thirty two comments, but on July eighteenth, nineteen Ninety-seven. The couple was involved in a tragic car accident though Caroline survived. Gene was killed. The very next day shoemakers former student Carolyn Porco, devised a fitting tribute, a planetary scientist at the university of Arizona Porco learned that her mentor was going to be cremated. So she spearheaded an effort to put an ounce. That's twenty eight grams of his ashes aboard NASA lunar prospector spacecraft the cost of sending things into space can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars per pound in terms of time and energy and research. And so although physically small that single ounce is a huge tribute polycarbonate earn capsule was built by Celestis these same company that sent ashes of Star Trek creator, gene Roddenberry into orbit wrapped around shoemakers. Capsule was a brass foil ribbon bearing a picture of the Barringer crater and thematic quote from Romeo and Juliet. And when he shall die take him in cut him out in little stars. And he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun. With the precious cargo in tow, the spacecraft launched at Cape Canaveral Florida on January sixth nineteen ninety eight more than a year later the vessel whose objective had been to hunt for water with deliberately crashed near the lunar. South pole shoemaker's ashes went down with it. Celestis hopes to enter other human remains on the moon at some point. But for the moment, she maker has the place to himself Carolyn shoemaker said in the nineteen ninety eight press release it brings a little closure in a way to our feelings. We will always know that when we look the moon. The gene is there. Today's episode was written by Mark man, Cini and produced by Tyler clang brain. "Say, zero point, eight grams per kilogram body weight is is nitrogen balance. While if you go up to one point, six, that doesn't mean that you only needed zero point eight to maintain nitrogen balance. And the rest was all excess that you're going to get rid of it because their way that can either explode like most people think well, no, but it doesn't mean that, but it also doesn't eve but might. But so I mean, that's one aspect of it, but I'm making the point that. That what what you need, like your expenditure of protein is going to increase? What do you spend protein? Well, protein isn't just supporting your muscle mass protein is what you used to make all of your enzymes. Protein is what you use. Protein is important, supporting talks affiliation and antioxidant defense. Protein is what you use to make the proteins that allow things to get in and out of your cells like protein is is used in all of these physiological processes and the studies that showed nitrogen balance reused for the RDA we're looking at any of those things, right. So how do you conserve your nitrogen when your body can seize that it? It's deficient in the diet. I well, you probably make a lot less of all those of all those enzymes and receptors and hormones, and all kinds of things that are made from protein. So you. You, we really need to study more where the points of like supporting sun indicator of health is, but there on there is some research on their such as like, what is optimal for your for your bone health? What is optimal for your body composition and that research is all heading in the direction of supporting closer at least one point, two grams per kilogram body weight, which is it's approximately a half a gram per pound of body weight. Which I think is in the in the United States, people are going to have an easier time thinking in in grams per pound, but that, but that's not really my point about the Kito diet. I'm not really thinking about the protein and thinking about the other nutrients. So when people are on Kito, the people who are avoiding protein for the purpose of getting higher Kitone levels and are pushing their protein a lot lower than that are way more likely to become deficient in nutrients than people who are trying to hit the like one point, two grams per kilogram, or you know, maybe a little higher than that. The reason is that that has hardly any nutrients in it except some fats have fat soluble vitamins in them. Most fats aren't that rich and fats label vitamin. So like butter is pretty good source, fats vitamins. Certainly egg yolks are predominantly fatty, and they're source fat soluble vitamins. But most fats I mentioned red oil before red palm wills, very rich and keratin Lloyd's vitamin e. but like coconut oil has like no vitamins in it. And that's close like olive oil has no vitamins in it to speak of really. There's some polyphenyls in all of will. So if you're if you're diet is overwhelmingly fat to the point where there's hardly anything else in it, then you're really freezing out the nutritional value of animal flesh and plant foods. So if you did, if you did a Kito diet, where you hit the protein targets that I was mentioning before from ant from meat that meat is going, it's not just protein that meat is going to supply B-vitamins that meat is going to supply minerals that meet will be as long as you know, like drain all the juices out when you cook it that me. It's an important source of potassium. And if you then also take whatever your limit for carbohydrates is. I mean, even if you only have twenty grams of carbs day to spend, you can get a lot of certain green vegetables in that can be really important sources of fully like me really important sources of potassium..

"You know those cheese you it's a cheese stick right the single serving sticks versus six or eight grams of fat mostly saturated in the fullfat cheese sticks let's see what else hamas i i don't think so you know you wanna stay away from because that could get on your seat or your fear eating or if you have a passenger eating while they're driving right staying safe in the summer sun curse shade as as what you're looking for if you're out in the sun too long so bring an umbrella to the beach or to your parker picnic and clothing you want to make sure you have at least a tshirt for cover up unless you're gonna be swimming of course and then well even even if you're swimming some people who wear the aqua clothing to protect themselves especially if you're out in the water for a long time such as boating or skiing or surfing or paddle boarding or something like that and then sunglasses you know you can't put sunscreen on your eyes so and i personally have had eyelid cancer so you know and you can't put sunscreen on your eyelids either so you have to protect your eyes from with sunglasses you know make sure they're both uva and uv b we'll have the rating of four hundred my favorite is maui jims but there's a lot of good quality glasses out there ray bans and and all the other brands and then speaking of sunscreens by the way and we're gonna talk more about this next well actually not next hour next next week show but in two weeks from now for our fourth of july show i'll have some worse than care tips or son smart sunsets tips for you which is one of the hottest days of the year in fact that's the air conditioners air conditioning days i think it's right after fourth of july all the way to the round the fifteenth lets the air conditioning appreciation days that's what it is every year but important to use broad spectrum sunscreen i use the zinc oxide containing screens the mechanical or the mineral screens not the chemical screens which are a lot healthier and and they do that any protect you longer and they don't have the nasty just sticks smell that and keenness of those chemical ones that you've finding a lot of stores and they re safe they don't adversely affect the environment of the coral polyps and the and the oceans when you go in and which everybody does they go and get wet and wash off all their sunscreen oh and also next week i wanted to mention that randy up at this time of next week we'll have biochemist and microbiologist randy prep and we had him on a week or two ago talking about travel health but then this week or next week rather we will have him on covering a little bit about travel health and and then well actually no he'll be on the two weeks from today excuse me for the fourth of july weekend edition and the first hour of the program and we'll talk about being food safe at that picnic or barbecue you're having on the fourth of july and also anti nutrients we touched on briefly when we had one recently but we'll talk about some of the foods that you want to avoid if you want to avoid digestive difficulties or allergies or immune compromise conditions are autoimmune conditions rather things like lupus or are a or some of the other conditions that some of these foods can aggravate and we do not want anyone getting ill from contaminated food so if you do have a can of food that's dented rusted or otherwise questionable when in doubt throw it out that's my advice for not only summer but any time of the year.

"Um and so that that's how the warren carbs came to be and the actual uh carbohydrates that are in the diet are slim to none we don't were league carbohydraterich a carbohydrates we uh there's not anything in uh intentional that we eat the has carbohydrates in it so for example something like milk would be out of the question because it has quite a bit of carbohydrates milk actually has more carbs in a does anything else has like seven eight grams a protein might have seventy grams of fat but it's got like 13 grams of sugar per serving uh so that would be out yogurt and things of that nature a lot of things that you wouldn't think about until you went down this rabbit holy you wouldn't normally think about these things until he were faced with until you started reading food labels a really good quote that i like from what rob wolf is uh he said you know were so concerned about our food labels and what's on them but the truth is we should be eating foods that don't have food labels and i thought that that was a remarkable comment because i i do know that they package or meet at the store and oil but a food label on it but i mainly just uh saying that our food uh uh shouldn't be process shouldn't be packaged in shouldn't be you know something that has a shelf life of uh you know three years whatever even even some things can just lay around for a longer period of time uses some things that haven't been shared with us throughout our history grains and in us um i just heard the other day and you get to know what's true different things pop up here and there but cereal is like a waste byproduct uh from from what i've heard uh farmers were just looking to you looking for a way to utilize uh some of the access stuff that they had in and they started to make cereals and that's.

"How did this number of point eight grams the protein come to be calculated that the way that they got the number the third recommended daily allowances zero point eight grams her killer per day is that in the fifties your 60s or whenever they decided to do this they had actually serve aid a number of healthy people also remember these are people completely free of disease very well and they look that the average american so remember again americans are eating much more protein than anybody else in the world everybody else in the world was trying to recover from the warren was not nearly as wealthy as 1950s america so america was eating on average zero point six grams per kilo per day so when they decided to make a recommendation they figured well the average is zero point six so people are healthy and zero point six now we're going to add two standard deviations above because we wanna make sure everybody gets enough so we're going to make the recommendation at zero point eight grams per kilo per day so that everybody gets the zero point six that we think that they need so that's out the zero point eight km about remember in 1950s america everybody's eating point six on average and doing very well so what's the right answer again it depends on who you ask i think somewhere on the order of zero point six zero point eight is perfectly reasonable to me if somebody has a lot of weight to lose then i think they have excessive protein stores so the collagen the connective tissue the skin all that stuff that holds the fat cells for example that's all protein that needs to be broken down so i think you need to go on the lower side if you have we to lose if you don't have we to lose.

"Fifty everybody wants to know how much protein should i eat every day the question which there's no good answer to is what is excessive and hear you get all different kinds of answers so i'll give you the sort of recommended daily allowance to the recommended daily allowances zero point eight grams per kilogrammes of bean wait some people said it should be the total weight which doesn't make a lot of sense to me because if you are very fat for example you're going to have a lot of higherweight but that fat tissue does not require protein to it doesn't make sense to account for that so zero point eight grams per kilogram of lean mass there are people who recommend higher and who recommend lower so certain doctors say you should eat very high protein like one half grams per kilo per day i'm i'm i tend not to agree with that but it all depends on your situation proteins are built up of these building blocks called amino acids to your body sort of assembles the amino acids into different protein sorta like you can take lego and built different things out your body has a certain turnover protein so proteins get old and your body will break it down if you go on an extended fast for example a you really deplete the body of this what you find is that most of this amino acids are reabsorbed through the year and and that makes sense because the bodies not going to waste protein if it really needs it and for this reason some people say that you react she need very very little uh protein intake even down to zero four grounds for key labor day.
