"Today. I'm going to do something a little different for this installment of your next dive normally tried to take you to a dive destination where we talk about the trip from a number of different perspectives. The travel the lodging the dive operator. Oh yeah the diving. Now we've been around the world. But today i'm going to focus on one particular dive that is almost in our backyard. It is one of the most iconic dives here in new england and that is the wreck of the chester. Polling off gloucester mass. The chester polling was a coastal tanker. That sank in a brutal storm on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven. The tanker had just left everett massachusetts and was bound for newington new hampshire. That information is pretty consistent in the research but there is other conflicting information about where she had been. And what cargo she delivered for example some documentation said she had previously delivered kerosene to new jersey while others indicated that the heating oil was delivered to everett mass. I would suspect that delivery to everett mass to be more likely always interesting when you Doing research to get this type of inconsistency now the chester polling was bill in nineteen thirty four at mariners harbor new york by united dry docks incorporated it was originally in the plattsburgh sacconi somewhere along the line at also known as the mobile albany before getting renamed as the chester polling at the time of its sinking it was owned by the motor vessel polling brothers and that was number one inc. These dyes would constitute my deep and wreck advanced. Open water dives. At that time. I was still diving in a seven. Millimeter wetsuit with the appropriate gloves and hood. I use the standard aluminum. Eighty tank with nighthawks. Thirty two. I can still remember the anxiety that had doing. The first real wreck dive in the northeast but once in the water what an amazing dive the visibility that day was thirty feet and my max step was at eighty five. Even though it was july the water temperature on iraq was fifty degrees. It was incredible to move along the deck and reach the mid mid ship section where. The tanker broken half absolutely mesmerizing but with an aluminum. Eighty you don't get much bottom time and after about fifteen minutes we headed back to the up line and after are appropriate safety. Stop we climb back aboard the boat and got ready to do it again. Total dive time was twenty six minutes the second dive that day was just as spectacular and pretty much the same profile. Let me just say in a wetsuit. It can get pretty chilly. I didn't go back to the chester polling until august. Two thousand nine and that was my last trip there. It was my two hundred and forty ninth dive but this time i did it in a dry suit and hope to get some good video of iraq. I still dove aluminum. Eighty the dive was just as i remembered and just as exciting visibility again was thirty feet. And my max. Depth was eighty two with and the bottom temperature. That day was forty eight degrees still very cold but so much better in a dry suit again however with an aluminum eighty. You just. Don't get much bottom time especially if your task loading like shooting video so my recommendation is that if you are planning to die the polling you might want to consider a little bit bigger tank something like a steal one hundred or going to doubles. I know that i wouldn't consider going back with anything less than a steel one hundred tank. How do you get to the chester polling back. Then we use cape and divers but they closed up several years ago and recently the dive boat cape and diver to was purchased by several guys from boston. An air now operating regularly chart regular charters again became an diverse to is a forty five foot. us coastguard registered dive vessel. It is spacious and right now with limited divers on board you get plenty of room to get ready and dive but you don't get a lot of but you don't get a lot of time because you don't have a lot of time to get ready because the is only a few minutes from the dock so be prepared one thing. Different about northeast wreck diving. Is that as a diver. You need to bring all your gear that includes tanks weights everything. It's not like diving at a resort. Don't get caught short by not being prepared with all your own stuff now. Here's an interesting element. That i discovered during my research. It appears that in nineteen sixties. The chester polling was length lengthened. By maybe twenty six or so feet. That doesn't sound like much. But at the time of her sinking her length with two hundred and eighty two feet so that lengthening was about ten percent of the original ship's length could this have been a contributing factor for the ship splitting in half. Just can't even afford to use as much or are you at risk of going into debt as you are covering your energy bills but by showing that there is this you know five to eight degrees difference. And when people even start to cool their homes we are able to identify who's putting themselves at risk of heat related illness heatstroke. I mean especially during heatwaves. These are the people that we really want to make sure that they are able to consume as much energy that they need to actually cool their home to a safe indoor environment and so i think that as we're moving forward with energy transition one of the things that we hope that this work will do is remind us that the goal of energy justice and energy insecurity is getting back to you need to consume enough energy to make.

We're coming back around and there's there's nothing worse than when this is going on in you want to be a part of it that you're just like what we gotta go through this thing and it's like i was like we need to stick around in case there's nothing you can do. What what are we going to do in this other plane yet. So at this point we're trying to. We're trying to milk this airplane back around to the north south runway milwaukee. You guys are on your way and that was exactly what i was asked is. So now you're here. You are in the jet you have to do a mission now. Mind you the training mission. It's a training mission so we could say yeah. We're gonna cash chips in here and then we're gonna come. We'll come back and but like so what's going on in your airplane at that time at that point.

Project Sealab 1 Summary Report - Part 1
"Way back in the nineteen sixties when i was growing up most of us were intently focused on the space race in one thousand nine hundred sixty four. The united states was making the transition from the mercury program to the gemini program and there really wasn't allowed manned spaceflight going on that year but there was another amazing exploration going on in interspace natwest project lab. One well i didn't know a great deal about c. lab until i started doing some research for the segment. I did hear on the show about scott carpenter. I did read. Ben held hells worst book about c. lab and that gave me a really good understanding of the magnitude of the entire c. Lab project both one two and three. And as i was doing more research i came across a report from the office of navel research. And it's the project sea labs summary report so today. I wanna start two part series on this report in part one today. I'll take you through the report up until the c. Lab one habitat is placed in position and then in part to a couple of weeks from now will review the mission some of the findings and conclusions by the project sea labs. Some report is subtitled. An experimental eleven day undersea saturation dive at one. Hundred and ninety three feet and report is dated june fourteenth nineteen sixty five for anyone looking for the report you might want to search on n r report. Ac are one zero eight. It's not that long to sixty two pages now. The copy. I got had a stamp on the cover. Then indicated. hard copies of the report would cost three dollars while microfiche would be seventy five cents and the copy was also stamped. Archived copy of this report are ha o.'neil from the office of navel research. Gif bond captain united states navy from the united states naval medical research. Laboratory are eland. Fear lieutenant commander. Us n. office of navel research and t odum of the mind defense laboratory in the preface pen by rear admiral. Leighton he says project sea lab one was the navy's first step into space. He also states that this report is being published by the navy so that all may share the information it is interesting to note that the background section of the report the authors do reference the work being done by captain shot cousteau and mr edwin a link and that was on their man in the sea concept they they stated indeed. The navy seems to be left at the post by the well-publicized efforts of captain cousteau and mr link. So it sounds like there's a little bit of sour grapes. Their report goes on to describe a december nineteen sixty three conference with the navy's bureau of ships where they obtained support for a c. lab now at that conference. They decided that the mine defense laboratory would build a habitat needed to select a location and they had five critique criteria for the selection one was the prospect of good weather too was good visibility. Three was a level bottom for was moderate water. Temperatures at depth and five was the general features of ocean graphic and marine biology biological interest. Now the site that they selected was argus island off of bermuda by march of nineteen sixty four all the appropriate approvals were obtained and they were often running and the operations were supposed to be conducted in the summer of one thousand nine hundred sixty four now. The mine defense laboratory selected an old experimental minesweeping float. Now the report has quite a few pictures and illustrations in it. Unfortunately the pictures are really not that great because of this. Pdf being produced either from a microphone. Show old old dot copiers but the stations are pretty good. Particularly the architectural drawings of c. lab won both the plan view and the cross section views by marched by may nineteen sixty four. C. lab was ready for sea trials off panama city. Florida on may twenty second nineteen sixty four. It was towed out to sea and sank uncontrolled and flooded over half full of seawater. Fortunately there were no injuries. The habitat was lifted. Towed back dried out and ready for another try on may twenty six this time with success. The previous incident was attributed to a misunderstanding of line handling waters by july. They were in bermuda and ready to sink. C. lab on july fourteenth. They again had issues because of the three to five foot swells and the yard patrol boat that they were using just wasn't powerful enough like chief brody said in jaws. I think you're gonna need a bigger boat. Well in this case. It was a crane that they took from bermuda. The reach the report details the adventure of getting c. lab on the bottom but they finally did an after getting everything hooked up and twenty four hour checkout on monday july twentieth. One thousand nine hundred sixty four at seventeen thirty five. That's five thirty five pm for you. Civilians c. lab one was manned by robert e. less anderson robert a barth sanders w manning and robert e thompson. Now what were the conditions like on c. lab interesting. The report says see lab proper dry inhabitable atmosphere satisfactory temperatures. Seventy eight degrees chilly. Water supply water not available heaters operable. Tv monitor not hooked up properly. Hot water heaters not operating refrigerator not operating co two scrubbers satisfactory. Electro writer. Satisfactory calibrated microphones not functioning. Crass burgo two meters satisfactory lights satisfactory. So you can see. There was still a lot of things that needed to be repaired. So i had to do was fixed everything that wasn't working and then complete their mission so in part to this series i'll take you through the mission the findings and conclusions from project sea lab some report of nineteen sixty five americas first journey into interspace. "Good vaccine news just keeps on coming on the backs of really promising news. From the pfizer. Biontech and madonna now oxford astrazeneca have announced the preliminary results from their phase three trials which showed overall seventy percent efficacy as reminder madonna and visor biotechs. Vaccines both currently show around ninety. Five percent efficacy but seventy percent is still very solid. That's about where dr fauci had been saying. He'd be very pleased to see. But i overall seventy percent. Because there's a weird quirk of the oxford astrazeneca vaccine. That i as someone who is not an immunologist. Don't quite understand but hopefully we'll get more information on it in the coming days. Here's what i can tell you for now. The vaccine like the pfizer biontech one would need to be distributed in two doses however the first dose just needs to be half a dose for some reason. Doing a half dose on the first injection makes the whole vaccine overall more effective than if you got to hold doses quoting stat news. The preliminary results on the astrazeneca vaccine were based on a total one hundred. Thirty one covid nineteen cases in a study involving eleven thousand three hundred sixty three participants. The findings were perplexing to full doses of the vaccine appeared to be only sixty two percent effective at preventing disease while a half dose followed by a full dose was about ninety percent effective. Humans Have Caused the Most Dramatic Climate Change in 3 Million Years

The Pleistocene is so important as it constitutes a point of reference for life on. Earth. That earth has looked at least roughly in the way as we know it, the continents were roughly where they are today. The North and South Poles were covered with ice. The atmosphere had a similar chemical composition to what we have today. Planet, Earth. Our earth has only existed for three million years. All, comparisons further back in time are quite meaningless. And the manuscript I hold in my hand is not just reaching. My brain is also striking straight into my heart. A deep humility settles in when look at the graph showing the variations in mean global temperature on earth over the past three, million years it shows that we have never throughout the whole plasticine exceeded two degrees global warming compared to our pre industrial average temperature of approximately fourteen degrees. Never. This means that Earth despite all the stresses and natural shocks from fluctuations and Solar Radiation Volcanic eruptions, asteroid impacts and earthquakes has regulated itself within an incredibly narrow range minus four degrees. Celsius were in deep ice age plus two degree Celsius. We're in a warm interglacial period lasting three million years. It's absolutely incredible. Especially since we know why. Extending over the northern and Southern Hemisphere with over two kilometers of ice above our heads here in Sweden an ice extending as far south as Berlin. This is an equilibrium state as it is not only lower solar radiation that keeps earth in an ice age. It is also the feedbacks caused by ice. As the ice sheets grow earth gets whiter, which means that more more incoming heat from the sun is reflected back to space more ice means it gets colder which means even more is and suddenly you have a self reinforcing mechanism. This is what makes an ice age and equilibrium earth remains. They're not only because of the external forces from the sun but also thanks to these inbuilt biophysical processes in this case, the color of ice. Earth can also be in an interglacial an intermediate state, which is what we have today where was still have permanent is sites at the polls and we have glaciers on land and the biosphere with forests, grasslands, and lakes roughly as Earth as we know it. It is these two equilibrium states and only these two states that the planet has been over the last three million years that is during the entire Pleistocene. But then there is a third state when earth tips over from self cooling feedback loops to self heating feedback loops, which leads to an inevitable journey to becoming a hot tropical planet that is four, five, six, potentially seven, eight degrees warmer than today where in principle, all the ice has gone and the surface of the ocean is more than fifty meters higher than it is today and where the conditions for live is fundamentally different all over the entire planet. This is what we call hothouse earth. Or Highs Zaid hot time in German where the article when we published it drew so much attention doing this burning heat wave in the summer of twenty eighteen that highs Zaid was chosen as the word of the year in Germany. In this research, we tried for the first time to identify the global mean temperature at which we are in danger of tipping over from our current state, the Holocene interglacial, and embarking on a journey that would inevitably take us to highlight our conclusion is that we cannot exclude that the planetary threshold. The tipping point where we kickoff unstoppable processes of self amplified warming is at two degrees. Bear in mind we are today at one point one very mind were moving fast along a path that reaches one point five in potentially only twenty, thirty years and two degrees in forty fifty years. This is one I would argue of the biggest. Challenges of all to test whether we are right. Can the planet cope with or Canet not cope with higher temperatures than two degrees? But. My conclusion based on the knowledge we have today is that the planetary threshold to avoid triggering high Zaid is most likely at two degrees. Now, if we pressed the UNBUTTON and kick off the great planetary machinery with feedback loops causing self warming, then the full impacts may play out over three four, five, hundred years before we reach a new equilibrium state hothouse. A planet with over ten meters, sea level rise temperatures, and extreme droughts, floods, and heatwaves making large parts of earth uninhabitable a planet we do not want a planet that cannot support US humans. This requires from us that we understand two different time horizons. The short term time of commitment. When do we push the unbutton but then also the long term time horizon when we have the full impact hitting on people these are different but ethically, I would argue only the trigger moment counts, we cannot leave a damaged planet beyond repair to future generations. So to summarize the decisive moment when we press don't press the button lies within the next ten to twenty years. With consequences for all future generations a moral, bum. You if you want to boil the oil out of your driveway, put some Dr Pepper on it. a couple of months ago I had the old changed my truck and the godless all can underneath the truck and I get home and I thought I was leaking oil. Are There Months When You Shouldn't Eat Raw Oysters?
"You know that every month sands? May June July and August? Has the letter are in its name? Don't look it up. Take my word for it. Did you also know there's an old wives tale that you shouldn't eat raw oysters in months without the letter are in it once again. You don't need to look it up. I'M NOT GONNA. Lie To you the logic behind this is that if you eat oysters during these months? Months you could get sick. Sounds like crazy talk right, and perhaps so perhaps not, but if you think about it, the months without an our fall during the summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the truth is that if you eat raw oysters in the summer, you do run the risk of getting violently sick. That's because and let me tell you. This does not come from an old wife. When the weather is warm, bacteria known as Vibrio, vulnificus and Vibrio Para hemolytic. Thrive and these pathogens multiply like nobody's business in warm water, especially in the Gulf of Mexico where there are a lot of voice, tres harvested so eating raw oysters during the summer theoretically could increase your chances of becoming sick, unlike chicken, pork or hamburger, all of which stink to high heaven when they go bad oysters do not so you can't tell when an oyster has turned the corner. They're also usually not rancid to the taste. However, you'll feel the effects about twenty four to forty eight hours after eating and. That's gone bad with Vibrio, chills fever, vomiting diarrhea. You know the drill in some people, high doses of Vibrio can actually be life threatening, especially, the elderly those with compromised immune systems and people who drink too much alcohol, but let's be clear. Infections caused by all Vibrio. Species are rare. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates. There are about eighty thousand vibrio illnesses of all types. Each year in the United States more than half are related to eating contaminated food, the most common strain. Vibrio Para Hema. lickochops is responsible for forty five thousand illnesses annually. Those numbers are a drop in the bucket, compared to sow Manila which the CDC says is responsible for more than one million illnesses each year. Those eating oysters harvested from the Gulf coast where the water typically is warmer than along the east and west coasts should be on guard. That's because Vibrio thrives on the water temperature near sixty eight degrees, Fahrenheit, or twenty degrees Celsius, so if you're going to saddle up to an oyster bar during the summer months, and our concern, whether these slimy suckers are contaminated well, ask the chef. I'm continuing my investigation into the myths and mysteries surrounding pirates in one individual in particular because not all pirates were that evil that raped and pillaged their way up various villages along the coast.
