Springtails: Nothing to be afraid of

"The first thing to say about spring tells is that probably not something. The yoga sports on the lease of your plants. They like moist places. And that means you most want you to see them on the surface of your soil particularly if you've just watered or perhaps if you lift up apart and look underneath inside a cashpoint possibly you will see lots of little creatures roaming about. They're about the size of a full stop and there are hundreds if not thousands of species. I think there's about two hundred and fifty different species of spring tail here in the uk so as well as into the in your house plant pots. You might also find them outside. You'll compost heap or in part of dump leaves on the characteristic that gives them their name is their ability to spring. But don't get them confused with fleas. They are different creatures. And do not have the capacity to blunt. You or your pets or indeed. You'll houseplants these are really agent creatures. Apparently there are fossil's of spring tales. Going back to four hundred million years ago the know insects they are heck supports which means they've got six legs. I've said that detroit officials while that means they feed on any kind of decaying matter in the soil. They also feed on fungi and algae and that sort of thing so they serve a wonderful purpose in breaking down organic matter. The thing that makes the spring tale jump is called for keeler earned it is of wishbone shaped appendage kind of detail that sits underneath the spring tales belly and when it's surprised for example by you lifting up the port where. It's been hiding this little spring flicks up and propels the spring tail into the air. And apparently this leap is the equivalent of me jumping over. The eiffel tower says pretty impressive. I'll link in the show notes to a wonderful video. Featuring sir david at bra or should i say our lord. God david attenborough talking about spring tales. The column bola class as they unknown and showing how they actually go about springing. It's really amazing to watch. They also have an amazing cheap on the head which they use to moisture is their body basically they have to stay moist in order to survive and most patches of ground on all seven continents of the world will contain about one hundred thousand spring tales per square meter wells' so they are everywhere and there isn't really any great reason for concern if you see and the old spring tail in your soil or under your parts. Because they're gonna go somewhere moist. They are breaking down organic matter. It may be a sign that you're a little bit to dump if maybe you're seeing spring tales in the soil of say cacti and succulents but if you seeing them in the soil of the plants in you've just watered or you're lifting up a part there some there it's really not something to worry yourself about. Just take a look at those tells on wonder at how amazing they are. The other thing to note is that they do mainly wonder about that. Jump everywhere so if you see some small creatures about the size of a full stopped moving around not necessarily jumping the could very well still be spring tails but if you disturb them you may find that one or two will jump and the color very say anything from very dark gray to white to brown. But as i say. The main indication is their location if they are in that soil and they're not doing anything with these. If your plot unusually the location of the creature gives you a really good indication of what it is if it's white and fluffy and in the crevices of your succulent than it's probably a mealy bug if it's a white and fluffy and it's in the roots of your plant while check it carefully. Because it could be micro rizal. Fungi strands but it could also be mealy bugs again. Your hand lenses really useful here. If it's something on the back of your leaves are white grainy stuff. That's probably the shed skins of your spider mites. If you've got really good vision or use a hand lens you should be able to see the brown crab like spider mites wandering around aphids. Well they usually tackle the new soft growth on plants often find them on. Flower stems or on new growth of leaves and thrifts well. They don't look that much different than spring tails but they are bigger and generally you'll find them wondering about your plant leaves as opposed to on the soil and if he wants to get a closer look at the spring tales in your life. Then dave wilson has written an excellent book called the garden jungle or gardening to save the planet which i highly recommend has a good technique to suggest for gathering some up. Dave suggests that you get some compost or leaf mold or indeed the material that's in your plant pots and put it into a funnel under warm lamp sick that funnel on top of some kind of container and the spring tails will head away from the heat and into the container and then you can take a closer look at them a fun activity if you have kids or grandkids to entertain this festive season

From The City To The Megalopolis

"It's amazing to think that. In the nineteenth century about three percent of humanity lived in cities and today. That number is fifty percent, and it's growing rapidly. We live in the age of the Megalopolis. We're going to talk about that now with Dr, Salvatori satis Dr set. This is an emeritus professor of the history of classical art and archaeology at the school normality superiore in Pisa in Italy. He's an archaeologist and art historian. He's the chairman of the Louvre Museum. Scientific Council his the author of several books on art. Art History and he's known as the conscience of Italy for his role in spot, leading the neglect of it all national cultural heritage. His book is if Venice dies, and it's a look, not only at in the struggles, Venison the twenty first century, but at the increasing urbanisation of civilization general doctor says thanks for joining us. Thank you for inviting me. Can you talk about if finished is? How much of it is about Venice? And how much of it is it about the changing urban landscape across the planet? Well my intention in writing. This book was to focus on Venice. In order to make people meditate about what's going on on on a global scale about what I would call the shape the form of the city Savannah's. Sample account that example, contrasting some of the most disturbing. Of Urbanization in our current world end, it is quite dramatic. What's going on in your book? You explain there are fifteen megalopolis. That have over twenty million people is the advent of these massive cities twenty million people cities people have to live somewhere is is that a good thing or a bad thing? Why does it concern you well? I'm concerned about the quality of life. Those people because although this organization may look something that happens naturally, it is also prompted by economic forces. It is a concentration of workforce. which is not necessarily living in good conditions in order to create profit for a very low number of people, so it's the usual formula ninety nine percent, the best one percent, the megalopolis is a consequence of a complication of the world, the general commodification of the world that includes to an increasing extent human beings. This is just a very efficient thing for the elites to have a concentration of workforce where people who will be able to work cheaper and produce more by being right there at the center of production. Is that what? What you're saying, produce more and also by more become consumers, because workers are simultaneously consumer, so there is a a bishop's or two, if you so wish seal between being workers and consumers and I, think that there are two your which are combined, and normally one is made. Opera is the big over-centralisation to the other one is the verticalisation of AF- architecture. May Boca Use a? It's an example Chung Ching in China which had the six hundred thousand people in the nineteen thirty s and now thirty four million people living in it. I talked to contrast this with a different. Format Orbis or shape of the city. A form of the city in which that is some sort of harmony of balance between the body of the citizen and the body of the city where the citizen doesn't feel The one thing I'm saying is that it is good that we presser diversity in urban form and preserving diversity means among other things saving and saving the other historical see also because there is in even more. More disturbing feature of urban farming cities taking shape in in our time, and that is the fact that wide ancient cities. Historical CDs had a boundary around the city in the case of Venice Lagoon, case of other cities, the walls around the city now the boundaries around the boundaries of the city are being gradually substituted by boundaries within the city which has boundaries between the gentrified areas. For. The Hey and the have nots. You can see that in Paris very well. This can impact is. Also in Rome or in Milan dimension, Italian cities, the gated communities are increasingly frequent all around the world, but the gated communities are for those who are wealthy or relatively wealthy, while the other people are condemned to live in favelas. Zeal or in in be don't be like this aim French. I'm just thinking of Paris. I was just in Paris with a group. And I was explaining how they protect the center of Paris where everything is the months heart, scale you know six or eight story tall monster building, so you can see the domes, and you can see the spires, and you can see the Eiffel Tower and then right when you get to the periphery. Periphery this big boulevard that circles the city outside of that. It's just no-holds-barred, and it's like keeping the Cadillac Bay outside of that periphery. It's forced of skyscrapers within that you've got the elegance of the classic people friendly city that is in a sense, a gated community, because it's unaffordable for lot of people, and they end up outside a town in the rougher downtrodden neighborhoods. This is what's going on. Your description is absolutely perfect I think. But this involves a separation with inside, which is socially potentially very dangerous for the future. which is not precisely what I would call democracy.

Saint Laurent’s is ditching the traditional Fashion Month Calendar

"Get down system news breaking news this week. I was pretty at. He can aback by the SUNOL announcement. Picking them back in a good way. Ya was although I guess in the last episode we'd been wondering whether big changes were actually going to end up happening so I guess there's your proof that's your answer so for anyone who doesn't know son. A Hall has decided to drop out of Paris fashion week and set its own pace for showing collections direction of the year. And it's going to pivot to adapt to the corona virus crisis and has said they told. Ww W D Saddam will said in a press. Release wd conscious of the current circumstances and it's waves of radical change. Santa has decided to take control of its pace and reshape. Its schedule creates Dr Anthony. Vaccarello said the violent impacted covered nineteen outbreak. Which has forced the closure of most of Santa Stores meant business as usual was not an option chief executive officer Francesca Valentini. Hinted that the brand famed for its spectacular outdoor women's catwalk shows set against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower in Paris could still age a physical show at some point this year. But his favorite formats. They're more intimate and closely aligned. The final customer room. What do you think that means? It's such big news. I think that a house as respected and that does such exceptional job also needed such an exceptional job for its Shows has decided to to step down. Because that's a really really positive meaning that others will feel other smaller. Brands will feel like they can do the same without sounding like their brands in an unhealthy state. Because I feel like a lot of people will be worried about the way to investors and stuff at the same time as So that's also something to take into consideration when you're canceling big show and some of the big names of doing it gives a lot more room for others. I mean the rose also says that that's what they're going to be doing next season and I think this is a really positive outcome. I do that like brands. Moving away from the long lamented fares suck in place flashing. Schedules is a good thing. There is part of me. Worries that with brands. Big Sahel if they're off schedule but still in Paris are still gonNA maybe in completely off the mark with this that people are still gonna fly to Paris from other places to see that. But they're saying they're not showing. Well are they saying they're not showing? Yeah they said they're not doing a show could still stage a physical show at some point this year. Yeah at some point means one show instead of like the fashion week schedule. Which basically these three shows. Because that's two women or four shows to women's and men's which is from going from four to one is a big step. It's a big step back totally and I'm totally in agreement with that but I just worry that everything is going to become cruise collection competition e where big brands compete to have a more extravagant location or timing or whatever and then we're all just going to have to be on airplanes all the time in random directions and if that's what's going to happen? I would just rather we stick to the fashion week schedule because at least you just take one flight and then you go to Paris and you see the shows you know. That's the devil's advocate but bear in. Mind that that's if international flights have resumed. Which for the time being. It isn't the case and bronze will not have healthy budget. They used to fly people around on a whim as much as they used to. And I feel that for example a brand like Santa Hall would make sense to host an event of some kind in the form of a show. Something else every year in Paris. Because that's whether the house is located and you do have to find a way to promote and showcase what the designers creating certainly certainly so there is you have to be able to allow for some kind of formats. I think it's positive to see that it's going to be less than than it was and I really liked the idea of rethinking a system. That was so wrong but yeah I agree with you until we see what the outcome is. Exactly we can't really speculate county yet. No I assume you know what it occurs to me that some of our listeners might not beyond the fashion week circuit. I feel like I'd love you to go into a little bed and you're really up -cluded on the stuff as well. What about the fashion calendar is has been so wrong for so many years but especially in recent years? Can you speak to you kind of just touched on it? I think the competition for each brand to do bigger and better viral. Basically shows has become completely out of hand plus the fact that there are an increasing number of brands increasing number of people wanting to attend shows. Because it's good for positioning or like people just want to be seen their raw than the because they're actually you know helping promote the show itself and I also feel that we talked about this before. It's always fashion week somewhere and whereas they used to be only one week for each city it's now becomes so long and there's men's could chew and crews and then all the minor fashion weeks like Copenhagen and button and all the others that I can't think of the top of my head right now but I know there are loads of them. Do we really need a show format in an era which is increasingly digital. And when actually sitting front row to show would only be important if that show. It really is a proper added value to the brand. I think partly because of how exhausting has become for everybody and by everybody. I'm not talking about myself. I'm talking about people who really work super hot during that time. So the bias. The brands you work super hard juryman time. Yeah at the end of the day. I'm just that to report I'm not Like I feel like there's a lot of pressure during those those busy busy busy times and having so many shows back to back over a period of a month then Rick 'cause two three times in Aghia and where every single time you have to travel to a different city and attend just absolutely absurd amount of events and shows parties all in the name of promoting a brown and it just turns into a ridiculous exercise which is actually quite just quite cringe and especially after everything. We've gone through in last in the last few weeks. I think it would be quite distasteful to return to

Gas Station Could Get Shut Down After a Dude Filmed Porn in the Snack Aisle

"I see what you're up to their Milwaukee and I gotta say it seems like a bad idea Milwaukee city government. There is trying to shut down a gas station. Thirty fifth hometown is the name of the gas station. Because someone without the permission of the gas stations owner filmed a down and dirty. Gonzo porn in the aisles of the convenience store chunk of the gas station at three o'clock in the morning and amateur porn actor in Frederick Allen. Enter the store in the middle of the night with a female companion Jelicic Astro del. She's reporter advice. Not The female companion reporter advice to be perfectly clear JELICIC caster. Del says that Allen who's wearing a bathrobe dances around in the video. Strokes himself for the Cameron. And then shrugs off his bathrobe gets on his knees and bones the woman from behind looking over his shoulder into the camera quote with an expression that says. Can you believe I'm doing this? Beside the starburst. The video posted to porn. How has been viewed more than seven hundred thousand times and a couple of dozen people with nothing better to do after enjoying that? Video signed a petition calling for thirty fifth hometown to be closed an elected official an actual elected official with nothing better to do after watching. The video took up their cause. And what Milwaukee District Seven Aldermen? Khalif raining told Fox. Six now news had convinced that this was a comedy piece of the onion at first. But no it's real Alderman Rainey. Who's leading the push to put? The Guy who owns thirty fifth hometown out of business actually said this into a microphone under my watch. I won't allow it keep in mind. It was filmed right next to the chips and across from the sunflower seeds. Ono those poor chips and won't someone please think of the sunflower seeds. I WanNa make it clear that I do not rise now. In defense of Frederick Allen Amateur Porn Star he's a convicted Felon Castro reports advice. Who's been with second degree sexual assault of a child? After a woman told him her fifteen year old daughter appeared in two of his videos. Those charges were dropped after a witness refused to testify. So Yeah Allen doesn't sound like a good dude but you know what I found in less than five minutes of searching on porn hub. Amateur porn videos shot on buses and subways guns. Oh porn video shot in big box stores. In airports and beam parks airplanes in airbnb fees amateur porn shot at world famous tourist sites. I didn't find anyone getting Eiffel Tower at the Eiffel Tower but I did find the Eiffel Tower and amateur porn. Shot and so many hotel rooms recognizable hotel chains and in one case a porn shot in my favorite hotel in the world. Quick shout out to the Maritime Hotel. My home away from home in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood. There's also some gay porn out there that was shot or so. It's makers claim in the Vatican basically wherever people go with their genitals on their smartphones. And there's really no where people don't go with their genitals and they're smart bones. Someone at some point has made a porno there and uploaded it to the Internet so shutting down places where someone shot a little Gonzo porn. Yeah let's just say that seems like the slippery of slopes to me a pretty luby's slope in fact because of the whole world goes the way of Milwaukee. If officials started closing down businesses where people made porn videos without the permission of the owners to say nothing of. Shutting Down Airlines and hotel chains and world religions. Pretty soon. There won't be anywhere for people to get gas or get a bed or get religion personally. Konso porn shot in gas stations. On I WANNA see that interested but you know what I would like to see what I am personally interested in seeing Milwaukee district seven Aldermen Khalif Rainey's Internet browser history. In fact I'd like to see the Internet browser histories of every member of the Milwaukee Common Council who voted to revoke the business license of Kalat Dallin the owner of the thirty fifth hometown gas station. Because I'd like to know where the porn they've been watching was shot. City officials three Alderman justified. Their decision to strip dylan of his business license because he was in the store when it happened and didn't call the police which leads me to believe that. No one on the Milwaukee. Common Council has ever worked in a gas station or as following the news very closely customers who all sorts of weird shit and gas stations and the goal of everyone behind the counter on the graveyard shift is just to get through that shift alive confronting dancing man in a bathrobe in the middle of the night. When there's no one else in the store why why would you do that? Could get you killed an L. In the dancing man in the bathroom in the store in the middle of the night is a black man. And if you've been following the news well it's possible Dylan worried that calling. The police could get allen killed. It would certainly cross my mind anyway. According to the testimony taken at the hearing where the licensed committee voted to strip dylan of his business license effectively shutting him down Dylan has run thirty fifth hometown for twenty years without incident and has a forty year quote positive track record as a small business owner in Milwaukee and he's cooperated with the police in the past and on this case to prosecutors credit him for the successful prosecution of Frederick Allen and they voted to close the business anyway after Alderman. Rainy said the two magic words sex trafficking. No one knows that the woman in the video was trafficked but she might have been for all anyone knows according to Rainey so they voted to shut thirty fifth hometown down lawsuit. Thirty hometown remains open while the decision is under appeal but there is one detail from the testimony that leaped out of me testimony taken before the licenses committee that seems to have been overlooked by the licenses committee. By the Milwaukee Common Council quote the man involved in the sex act better gallon amateur porn star has a history of doing this all over the city. So looks like we're going to have to shot all of Milwaukee

"So what are the what is the family? Like is it sort of an interesting with some would say even twisted dynamic. Yes. It's this family who work on a lemon or cheered picking. Lebanon's in one day. This mysterious visitor comes to comes to the orchard. This is like cider house rules a little bit under the Eiffel tower to me. We'll see. Yeah. It's sort of mysterious. They would say, you know, ten mustached visitor visits and sort of falls in love with the with the lemon play. Do you play this thin moustache person? I feel never active never act. Never. This is crazy. I'm going to sound like I'm a lunatic because I've only seen one movie, but you do. So like, the director would he be crazy? I make maybe I am at one embarrass myself like saying that. Thank obviously, he's not Woody Allen is young filmmaker. Alan woody. I guess I see that Ellen moody. I could see how you might think. It's not. You met someone named Walsh met, you wouldn't think you related or Matthew wall. She wouldn't think it's oh, that's Matt walls. The great wall sounds like a dramatic actor. In that movie widows, he played a role that I was like that's what I wouldn't have that. I'm rooting for this guy. You know, you've Tokyo I played a creep late a guy who was having an affair with his niece or something. That's fucking nasty. Yeah. Yeah. We all agree into that is nasty behavior. He just said he wanted to play that. Make out sound. I hear. Dining put it the film. You know, boring film about a heist and all these people planning a heist and then. The little bit uncomfortable way. Uncomfortable. I'm just brainstorming my future films, and it inspired me quite a lot. I mean, obviously, he couldn't be Woody Allen because Woody Allen's films are not allowed to be played here in America anymore. I don't think they could find a distributor Dickey's piece shit Hollywood asshole hypocrite may we all agree about that. But I was talking to my Polanski, bro. Roman. If you include all is sort of student, so not small the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas with its fully workable gondola vied for the medically of choose sleeps four thousand and all the thing about Vaga says I was a trend to create the world in hotel signs. So it would be New York, New York, and the Venetian, and then Paris and Paris have a half size towns. And then I'd say, but everything in the book will be miniature scale compared to the thing. It's a miniature of and then I say well things may also perform a millage UT. So they may explain the concept with over puzzle. Job memory, a souvenir of a building on a. Tearing though interesting fits the Bill as does a miniature bottle of gin, Volkswagen beetles is note because it was a vigil Bill small it wasn't smaller than else, and no doesn't ever small thimble. No matter how kina those who act them mini bars and lapdogs of borderline as the autobahn cycle today. Shen a toy poodle made of plastic in a classroom Tableau made by five year olds of no interest to anyone. I wanna start off with as you doing the book with the Eiffel tower, and of course, the gases onto the beginning of the idea of the of the souvenir small obviously scale versions of the Eiffel tower tower itself, conversely, does a similar thing to what we're talking about miniatures the relationship managers have to their larger objects in simile people are able to goes up people have obviously never been in an airplane at this time right to go tower. Suddenly, see. Paris see the world in a completely new way. Exactly, why begin the with the Eiffel tower which at the time when opened eighteen eighty nine with the biggest building in the world and now dwarfed by hundreds of course. But then it was extraordinarily you say you need great coverage to go up even to the first platform. They wanna done this before the tallest. The tool building in Paris will the view the highest view with the Notre Dame cathedral. And then this thing suddenly goes up hundreds of feet, and you go up, and he say, the other you see miniature Paris laid out in front of you for the first time they wanted ever seen this. So you can see the houseman of. You can see your house may be relation to than it was hospital. It is on foot. You've got an idea. But how far is when you looking at it vertically? It's a different thing. And you get a sense of two things you get a sense of enormous omnipotence, you are taller than anything on the ground. You are giant seeing the whole of your CAT for the first time. But you also get a feeling of what actually this is a big modernist building. And it's the future and how small we are really up in the avenue relation to the world around us. And then as you say you come down for the first time pretty much, you can buy mass-produced factory souvenirs of the Eiffel tower, you can get them as little metal objects to put on mantelpiece or you can you can get the image in any form of clothing scarf or handkerchief for that kind of stuff. If you get it as a wing. Silver wing fulltime shape. So that Olivia stashes the idea of ownership and capturing something and the idea of saying I was there. And then that in time we'll be joined by other things on the mantelpiece. And of course, those souvenirs say ubiquitous world now, obviously photography going to visit a place taking. I think it's difficult to think we're remove that's tiny little cast iron model of the Eiffel tower. No way replicate use it reality the experience of visiting the thick and yet it's suit of the more accurate..

"There. Once was a man who loved the Eiffel tower he loved it more than anything in the world. He had pictures of it all over his walls. He had books about it and little statues even had a recording. He loved to listen to that consisted of various celebrities describing the first time they'd ever seen the Eiffel tower yet the man himself had never been to Paris why because the man had this restaurant. It had been in his family for generations. The man's father had run it and his father before him. And now was the man's turn. And he was worried he was worried that if he went away the restaurant would go out of business. So he stayed there all day every day throughout the year. And the Eiffel tower never got his visit. But then one day it was on the morning of his fortieth birthday. The man. Found something on the kitchen table. It was a round trip ticket in his name. To Paris surprise said his children happy birthday. But said the man I can't go to Paris. I can't go see the Eiffel tower. You know, I can't possibly leave the restaurant. I I can't accept this. The really I do appreciate it. But then the man's children explained their whole plan. The man would take the plane to Paris, and they would stay home and run the restaurant. Wasn't it? The best birthday present ever. But you don't know how to run a restaurant. The man said, of course, do dad his children said we've been watching you for years. We know everything we know it all and finally the end he was persuaded. So the man went to Paris and had the time of his life. He climbed to the top of the Eiffel tower. He stood there looking out at that beautiful skyline. Wow. He kept saying in his mind. And all the way home the man thought about his children, how nice they were how grand how they turned out. So well how they loved him so much, but when he arrived he was in for a shock. It turned out the restaurant had gone completely under. We're really sorry, dad. His children said we tried really hard. Really? We did. I guess we didn't know as much as we thought. We did the man was crushed. He thought about his father and his father before him. And he cried all those generations of working and slaving all that restaurant, tearing down the drain. But how could it even be possible? The man.
