"Type thing you know that God blessed when Pope. Stuck in a where. He's trying to get into positive. Yes karate choppy kissel wants to talk about pope still you frozen this motion Waiting and Billy's eternally waiting to us right now. I'm GonNa Die Greg. What's the the attire when you're doing like the Miami Dade sports thing that you're going to do the award show like what did they tell you dressing? Is it just your pick of the litter? No that's a good question because it did come up I think they just want me to convey. Hey at home here. I think they just want me and look a button down dress shirt. I don't think they want me in a jacket although I'll have one to throw on if they fully nude shirtless hear him hear how a High School Award. Show where there high school sports like canceled this year. Span sports were. I don't think any jury full baseball season would just about be ending right now. And I don't think they played baseball or softball. I guess I guess there were winter. Sports whatever you know whatever. Winter sports are basketball track. I think some of the winter sports. Yeah volleyball's on stuff but there's a lot of awards were given out You know I don't know anything about that but I'll be reading from a script on the teleprompter. So are you nervous about the names? I'm probably the most nervous about the names you know I'll try. I'll hopefully people be here. Who Know How to pronounce the names. Because I've frankly probably never heard of ninety nine point nine percent of the athletes whose names I'll be announcing so Probably more than that. He could be but I'll I'll talk to a couple of our writers who cover high schools and get schooled from you. Is there an opening monologue involved? Some jokes high school. I used to be high in school. I don't know I'm spitballing data. You know it's funny. You know what's funny about that? Is that my highschool newspaper where I did my first writing. My entire life was called the macarthur high times and they eventually changed the name of that. Because it had a drug connotation particularly at that time in the seventies but no I don't I I think I'm going to pretty much be reading from a script. Hopefully I'll be able to add a little bit and throw some personality in there. But you know the Greg Cody show. I mean I'm just emceeing is something that is now. Is this something that only people who are invited to it like the high school athletes can watch or is this. Could we help you get an art show and I tell everyone? Hey if you WANNA watch. Greg Cody hosts and award show come onto the zoom ring. I don't I don't know how that's GonNa work. I mean I'm sure I could make you guys privy to it if you want. I wouldn't wanNA give out the link to show listeners or something that I you know. I don't know how that's GonNa work this Just to go back to pope fest. I get this is. This is exactly how pope fest went downhill quickly. 'cause I remember that we had a limited number of invites? It was an open bar thing. I don't think that they charge anything for it. So you had to get invited to the thing but you had to share like your favorite Edwin Pope Memory and you had people that were like twenty two years old twenty one years old that just filled the place out and like we're actively coming up to us and like mocking the process. Like Oh my God I wrote such a heartfelt thing. I never read a single thing. Edwin pope rope but I figured if I just wrote this I'd get in and it worked and then I told my friend and they did the same so I feel like that's probably going to be the same thing that happens. If you just put out this code where you're just going to kind of ruin it for the people it's intended for that could be right If I recall on Pope Fest night. didn't Stugatz even sort make fun of poke a little bit in his art warming. He showed up to that. That's the most shocking thing. I don't remember that he showed up. Shoot up at eventually. Did Yeah and he gave his cell phone number to some guy that was a listener. That convinced him that he had some sort of opportunity for him. I don't I don't exactly know this guy was kind of following me around throughout the night in the night's other events too and he's a funny guy I don't remember his name but like yeah he was just kind of following me around and he was one of the first people that told me that he lied about his his Edwin. Pope memory to get in and then later in the night he showed up and he showed me his phone he goes. I got Stugotz his cell phone number and I go. How'd you do that? He's like Stugatz gave it to me. I told him that I was doing this. I think he told me he was like something about bonds. Or something I think tackling a force like and then I asked you. Why are you computer technology? That guy's GonNa worry about it. I was like okay. May I turned into a bit of a so? I think at one point when cigarettes was on the stage. What was it like two or three years ago. Probably more than that right time. A time flies to your question. I don't know because I remember listening to it. I remember listening to it and at that point I was just listening listener like I hadn't even started working with the ESPN. And I remember driving to school or whatever and listen to you guys talk about Pope Fest and I was like man. That'd be cool and then I just never did anything because I was like whatever I don't care. Yeah but I remember. I remember being at least like twenty sixteen. Maybe does that sound right. Yeah I have guessed four years if you ask me for a number so that sounds about right now. We're here guys. Were doing googling. Edwin pope off the rails. Now that you think about it because he no. I didn't January two thousand seventeen. Oh my okay so early seventeen. That'd be weird so early station of the death of it so early probably February of Seventeen. I would say was probably won't did it. It might have been later in seventeen because I remember. It took us a long time to wrangle over. How we were going to do this. And how was going to work and you guys. I have a sports crusade that I want to start. I WanNa know if you guys want to join me. It's pretty random and especially in these times. It seems very unimportant but I feel like this. This is the right time to try to fix little things in sports. You know so. When sports comes back can be right in here it is. Here's the crusade. I am done with field. Goal Nets in football. Okay done with them. Why can't fans keep football's okay from now on when sports returns? No field goal nets. A field goal is made. It goes into the crowd. The fan gets to keep the ball. It's it's a win win for everybody other than the budget of the NFL which ensures not struggling right. Now give me a good reason why we need these stupid field goal nets while the first one comes to mind. Is that people that aren't paying attention. Get absolutely ripped well by annual. Pay attention then all right enough with you next reason what come comes to mind for me. Is the idea of too drunk? Fans fighting over a football and coming to ugly blows and the police are called an okay. But what about foul balls and baseball and Anthony to your point? Foul balls is the same thing in baseball. It's more dangerous. There's no way netting up. Yeah you heard. The news expanded netting. Yeah the Balkan go over the net and someone could not be. We can't be worried about people paying attention at this point. You know I just feel like you guys disagree with me like I know you guys are just trying to find other reasons but like what is the reason for this. Why was that ahead of baseball? Nets shouldn't baseball. Nets have been the first thing and then flick. Who's getting hurt from a football? It you in the head. Well Stuart Scott got hit in the eye with the football with the jugs machine of Made A. That's a jug machine though we're not throwing perfect spirals these football. Imagine you're kicking up your kicking a football from thirty yards away and it could be good. You know how the graphic now could have been good from sixty yards. That's coming in hot. And if you're not paying attention like trying to grab a Pretzel and then hits you between the between the eyes in the warhead damaged if it spiral and it hits you on the side of the head you're GonNa be like holy crap that her but if I throw a football at you in the motion that a ball twirls like over end over end over end. It hit on the side of the head. You're just going to be like. Oh you're not gonNA be like wow. My orbital bone is destroyed forever. I don't think so you're calling for something. You're crusading on behalf of the mass murderer of cows whose hides of us to make. Footballs in Tacoma. Imagine if in every NFL game they're going through you know a dozen more football's than they ordinarily would allow. What a struggle that will be. I'm telling you BESSIE THE COW. Giving up her life for your crusade is i. Don't know man. Yeah. Isn't it picks pin. What are you doing there? But it's leather boot Greg's right it's cow but why is it called Pigskin? Then that's a good question. How big skin. I'm calling to combine. It should be a good old hide. Just throw great. Let's go back outside. Throw a little hide You go behind around man. What did you did? You guys do anything. Because you billy Anthony. You guys don't have kids yet so don't have to do anything for your wives yesterday. Would you guys do for your mom's because Got Up and I say daddy because I have a kid that got up real early yesterday and made a nice little Pancake breakfasts from scratch for his wife. I don't know about you guys and my wife's not a mom so I didn't do that for my wife and then his wife's not a mom so he didn't bill you have but you guys have okay. True everybody can fact has a mother. That's why you know okay so you guys didn't know how we we ordered A. We ordered her presence. Did like the pickup Joe. Fi gave it to her. But it's it's like very very like a toned-down version of Obama Day and like all celebrations have been kind of so. There's not a ton you can do breakfast. Sounds like a good idea so I did wake up through the thing. There was a little hitch in the plan. We had to go to lunch because yesterday we had a full day. We had lunch at her parents. And I know it's you know to try and work social distancing but were visiting parents. I'm sorry like people I can already feel people in my mentioned you win all your in laws. You terrible person forget it was. That was a holiday. We went over there for a couple of hours so we did dinner with my parents. Lunch with her parents in breakfast with my only window overslept a little bit. Can ally the ponies. Got Me on Saturday night so I overslept a little bit that. Ufc Two. I mean imagine actually didn't even watch you see on Saturday this. I know I'm kind of like a fair weather fan when it comes to UFC it. I turn out for the CONOR McGregor fights but sporting event in two months. I know but it didn't get it. Didn't for out of Ferguson. I would've watched but when when that fight switched up. That card wasn't really doing much for me I love ESPN and I love you..

"Does not care how bad he was last segment. We thunder with a show solid bounceback weekend betting the ponies points is the sentence. I've ever heard until like the next one friend. Send me some tips and daddy took. I gotTA BE HONEST. I I love you for this head. Thrown it to me for the Shula Eulogy and I was that bad with it. That would scar be for like days. Man It would sit with me for at least two days. You have a short memory. My friend I'm very very proud of you Mike Ryan so this is something. We have not done well enough because the show keeps getting derailed but it is not insignificant news in South Florida. I can't think of many people in the history of sports in this town or in the history of this town period that when Don Shula passes away at the age of ninety they are not mournful and respectful because this person who was a pillar in south Florida of integrity throughout his time. Here like you will not hear very many bad stories about Don Shula and certainly no public shames there are. There's nothing on the resume you know. He spent fifty years in the public eye. Nothing on the resume other than associating his name with integrity. Yeah and when I was little watching the Miami Dolphins Don. Shula was the head coach. I remember like yesterday hen being lifted up on his players shoulders after he set the record at Philadelphia and it was totally a bygone era yet. He won a lot with the Miami Dolphins early on. He did a lot of winning and bottom so much down here. This was really my first ever recollection of a legendary coach being pushed out sort of against his will and the fans sort of saying. You know we've had all these disappointing teams wanting the legend Jimmy Johnson to come back and how difficult that was to do with grace. Don Shula handled it about as good as you could but there were a lot of people that were still very upset at the way that Don Shula got pushed out. That didn't have these university. Miami ties. That loved Jimmy Johns. I have. I have my regrets about my portion in that particular development and it is the only time Stu gods that I have ever in my life. Seen my father dance for joy on something and it's when Don Shula was fired replaced by Jimmy Johnson now. I was a very young columnist at the time. Probably going back on it and I've said this before they're any number of things that I wrote in my twenties that I regret because I was a columnist. Just sort of trying to find his voice. I was given a job earlier than I should have had it and so it was considered and and I was influenced a little bit by sports radio coming up at the time to be a little bit meaner about things imprint than people had been before because the language in print was supposed to be soft and so when Edwin Pope criticized somebody. It meant something because he didn't do it very often. As the older elder statesman columnist of the Miami Herald. But I come in as a young guy and I write very early on Jimmy. Johnson needs to be the new coach of the Miami. Dolphins Don Shula needs to be out. And after I did that STU GODS I have. I ever told you this story because Don Shula called me into his office. I was called into his office to sort of explain that column to him so I come in and I you know. His his desk was higher than the surroundings. So it was very regal. Almost as Large Eagle filled as Colin cowherd. Set up a box and I extend my hand. Just walk into the room to say hello and he just stared at it. He left it hanging there and so I asked him. Did you really just call me in here so that you can do that? And my father never forgave him for that. Even though many years later I repaired all of that with Don Shula and told him myself that I was too young at the time and shouldn't have been writing in those stronger. Terms lacked a certain respect because the man was an icon and my language was a little. I don't know if I'm explaining this well to you but it was a little less respectful than it should have been because I was an up and coming sports writer trying to write a little differently at the time and so my opinion was a little more strident than most people were writing back then had an older writer. Greg Cody wouldn't pope. Had they written the same exact words. What do you have left their hand hanging there when they went to shake it? I mean I don't know I don't know when When Mike Ryan is saying that he handled many of these things with grace. That's one of the only times I can remember. Not Remembering Don Shula handling something with grace. It's one of the reasons I was so sort of floored by Because it seemed like small behavior that that photograph that Mike is Talking about that video of Don. Shula being carried off on the shoulders of his players at Philadelphia was Doug Peterson. The Dolphin quarterback in that game. Who was the Dolphin quarterback in the game? Where we're Don Shula ends up Breaking the record for winningest. Nfl coach ever. I was looking it up right now. I think it was. I think it was Peterson. The amazing thing about for me at least about Shula was how he coached the he adapted the Times Dan and again I'm looking at up where he adapted to the Times where he won a super bowl with a quarterback. Bob Griese either. I think through the ball seven times. Isn't that Super Bowl undefeated season? They ran the ball a lot. And then he got this quarterback at a Pittsburgh Damn Maria when he really adapted with marina at five thousand yards. Forty eight touchdowns. Suddenly this old school coach became a guy trying to get it done through the air and I think if he has any career regrets. You're right nothing of class. No one's GonNa have anything but nice words to say about Dodge Shula and he is earned every single one of those nice words that are going to be said about him. I think he has any sort of regret. It was his inability to win a superbowl with what many people regard the great as the greatest quarterback of all time and that would be. That would be his only regret though. We're apart these days with sharing more at Geiko. We'd like to say thanks. Thanks for sharing you. Savage dance moves. Thanks for sharing your. Diy Haircut fails.

"Packing and packing tree of college football leaves here. This is the Paul Finebaum. Show our podcast. Welcome back second hour so good to talk to a general bowl during our number one. It's also great to welcome in Christine. Brennan who is just really one of the great sports columnists in this country She's a columnist for USA. Today contributes to CNN as well as Abc and other news organizations I think I'd run out of time but I do want to welcome her and say hello and first of all Christine. We appreciate you being here and hope all is well with you. I know it's a tough time in this country. All it is I'm good thank you. My family friends. Everyone is is good as far as I know doing well. Thank you and yes for anyone who is And so many of our friends in country men and women dealing with this Yes heart goes out to them but so far all as well as a journalist. I don't think there's ever been more important time to be a journalist and the importance of telling the story of course our colleagues covering the White House and everything else but even in the world of sports. There's there are very important stories and I'm I'm honored always but especially now honored to be a journalist and be able to try to tell them especially about the Olympic Games. You had a major exclusive today on that concerning the USA women's team I WANNA get into that. Tell us what you know. And then we can certainly broaden the conversation. Yeah I well. I think what we're talking about here is USA swimming. So I I'm This is this is huge. This is as big a development is. We've had certainly in the US. Olympic world vis-a-vis. Paul Looking ahead to the Tokyo twenty twenty games as your listeners. Probably know Among the many things we've been talking about in sports over the last week or so as as so many events. Nba and other things have either been suspended. Cancelled postponed Your heart breaks for those high school. Seniors Those college seniors who lost their spring seasons obviously the men's and women's basketball tournament and one of the biggest stories and one of the the last remaining questions out there about the status of a sports event or a League right now. Is the Olympic Games? They're scheduled to start July twenty fourth in Tokyo. These are the Summer Games. They're they're huge Well over ten thousand eleven thousand athletes Billions of dollars for sponsors the networks NBC and so many others I would be covering. It would be my nineteenth Olympics in a row winter and summer I basically started. When Baron do cooper ten started the game's not quite but in eighty four and so I'm honored to have been covered all those and to cover this. Hopefully this one is well. Well the last few days the drumbeat has been getting louder and louder From people saying these games cannot go on. I I had a piece with Billy King The two time Olympic gold medalist swimmer where she was just talking about how she was swimming at. Indiana University the close the university. The pool was closed. She went to the YMCA. This is a two time Olympic gold medalist at the YMCA THE YMCA's close she's out of the YMCA The scrambling defined pool time the scrambling to work out to get ready for the Olympics and Just today in the last couple of hours. I broke the news of USA swimming. One of the most important of the national governing bodies in the US Olympic Community Paul saying urging the US Olympic and committee to fight and work to postpone the Tokyo Olympics. And that is by far the biggest development we have seen in this continuing story of the Tokyo Olympic Games from the US perspective. And I could make the case This is the biggest development yet worldwide. Because it is such an important entity. Usa swimming. It's Katy La- decky. It's Lily King Kaleb. Trestle of course for years it was Michael Phelps no longer And for them to be calling on the postponement of the Olympic Games and asking the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee to fight for that and to help make that decision and work towards. That goal is really stunning. News and a major development today in this particular conversation in Christine. We all heard from from the Tokyo organizers and I know these people I tend not to not to trust anyone connected with the Olympic movement but I I wonder at what point are they going to quit looking the way they currently do in in in the face of this pandemic from from a global standpoint and just in and do what you've reported today and with so many other people Including leaders of this country are calling for Paul. I think we'll see this news in the next week and it to me. Having said covered the Olympics for a long time the pace is quickening and what seemed unthinkable a week or so ago at least well certainly a week or two ago. now seems almost inevitable that the games would be postponed. I'm sure people are saying well when when you know wait a year and that that would be the most logical thing instead of the twenty twenty Olympics the twenty twenty one Olympics so strange so weird. Obviously a tough one for all these athletes Training for the Olympics. That's once in a lifetime for most of them Certainly once every four years for all of them and And then this could happen. It would be obviously five years between the Olympics. It hasn't happened yet. The International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach of Germany is is the president and he himself was involved and was a victim of the boycott of the nineteen eighty Olympics. Jimmy Carter boycott the US boycott of the Moscow Olympics over the Soviets in Afghanistan fighting a war. There that Politicizing the Olympic so Thomas Bach has been very steadfast. So far saying nope you know. The Games are going on. He has started to to push you know to to Leave that position just a bit. And soften on that and and talk about their looking all kinds of issues So that was a change nonetheless thing. The Games are going to go on the four months away as I said so there is little time what I think has changed over the last week or so is that yes or four months ahead. But we're looking at the here and now and we're looking at athletes and Actually Bob Bowman I. I did a piece on him today. Earlier before this US US USA. Swimming News. And Bob Bowman was talking about and asking if in fact What these athletes are doing If by actually going out and trying to compete and practice If in fact They're not actually. It's not actually contrary to our national goal right now and They're saving a swimming pool. you know. There's about Bowman said Michael Phelps coach Paul that they're safe The CDC says Chlorinated pool is safe and he's only got seven swimmers and a pretty big pool so that they're they're violating any rules in that case but When you picture An athlete trying to train Health clubs are closed. Gyms are closed. But if they're trying to force it are they doing something that could be detrimental to the health of themselves and others. I at this time when we're all Being kept trying to be so careful so that Bob Bowman I think has also been a big part of this conversation as renowned out. Swimming coach of Michael Phelps. He and others have been speaking out about the problems. And I think that's why we're seeing this. This story now reached critical mass over the last couple of days. We're talking with Christine Brennan. Of course to the USA. Today calmest and you see her so often on other platforms couple of weeks ago. Christine in. I know this is not about you and I know that I'm not trying to embarrass you. Hear what's what's what's with accolades but you were awarded the twenty twenty. Aps Red Smith Award which have spoken to that organization recently. is is is just such an incredible honor of what you've done throughout your career but what you continue to do and I bring that up not to put you on the spot because it's voted on and you know. Some great people were considered have won this award. But but I'm going to ask you about journalism right now which is always under attack. We talked about this before but it seems like it's never been under attack even more and more than it is right now and then. I'm not sure if it's ever been more important than it is right now. Well thank you first of all. And it was quite an honor and humbling to to be Awarded that honour of Red Smith. Of course one of the greats and our business and of all time and I never would have thought that that I would be so lucky to win an award From the Associated Press Sports Editors that would have his name on it so that was just Some of it Paul. You know you've been around a while I have and to be you know. Included in any of those lists with some people Edwin Pope at the Miami Herald when I started my career at the Miami Herald George Solomon at the Washington Post. Who brought me up to the post From the Miami Herald you know. It's just it's it's incredibly humbling and just so lovely and It's It's just very very nice and I take it so seriously and it means so much to me Yes journalism has never been more important. I saw a been so busy the last few hours. I'm sure you have with your show and you don't see everything but I. I was looking on twitter. And a spare moment in the midst of all these stories And I saw it my my fellow. North Western Middle School of journalism colleague and And friend Peter Alexander. What happened today in the press room there where he asked a an obvious and wonderful question and the president of the United States just attacked him in the midst of what I believe is the worst crisis in our our lives. Certainly in my life and I just couldn't believe when I was watching I'm so proud to be a journalist. Always obviously facts matter truth matters and You know I don't need to get into politics But just a note for anyone who's ready to throw something at the radio whatever My father was George Bush Vice Chair George. H W BUSH IS. I chair in Ohio. Nineteen eighty eight and in his presidential campaign. I knew the The president Late president Fairly well if I saw him we hug each other and talk about my dad. Who Was Republican Party Chairman Toledo Lucas County Three different times I think as a Republican A that kind of Republican Business Republican or Liberal Republican are on challenged and That's our family and what I'm seeing now is Is just so appalling. And I'm not even trying to be political. I'm just saying this is our country and and journalism. The First Amendment is an integral part. It's a pillar of our of our world in our country and everything we're about and journalism and telling the truth is never been more important now and asking those questions like like my friend. Peter Alexander did today Are absolutely something. And he'll come right back tomorrow and do it again or or Monday. Whenever and I do think I hope people including your listeners. Who might be supporting this? President are starting to realize. Just how stunning this is. That the way he's Treating the people who are paying the message that is so necessary and information. It's so necessary in our country right now so I'll stop waving my journalism flag but but obviously thank you for asking and As I said I've never been more honored to be a journalist than I am today and for those of you who are sitting around at home with a little more time I would recommend.

"Joining us Jason is there are more disappointing team in the NFL so far then the Jacksonville Jaguars with how high the expectations were. Well, I bet Green Bay right there with them. The defense. We knew it'd be a problem. Right. Green bay. Yeah. I mean, I guess but the problem is that when you start with. Here's the thing about Jacksonville. I know what you know. Hype train problem is the quarterback was always terrible. So in the back of my mind is like this could be a huge regression with Green Bay Aaron Rogers. Supposed to be great. And the fact that they're not this year, especially after Rogers missed all while season. I think that's a pretty huge disappointment. But yeah, I mean. Jacksonville AFC championship game a year ago. I'll go with their they're right there. It's a it's a it's a it's one of those races that you don't want to be the winner us. No, you're right about that. Jason do we know if it was more Tom Coughlin if it was more Doug Marrone who wanted Blake Bortles back and gave him that contract. Oh, I think that this is this is on Doug Marrone, those guys Marrone and Caldwell. Convinced Coughlin to go along with it. That's that's pretty clear, but look Coughlan signed off. He's the guy who's in charge. He didn't have a better answer. The other side is look their contracts. Not crazy. The only problem with the contract was for another year. Maybe they have to keep them around for next year two, but he's not going to be starting quarterback. I mean, that's older. It is Doug Marrone going to be back next to your should he be back. I think he should. I mean, here's my problem. Everybody talks about all these guys who should be fired. Ruins two years into this. And he's should be gone. And this is gonna hire. Because there's not that much. That's out there. I mean, Mike precursor got fired. He's basically the number one guy on most people were here. This Lincoln Kennedy stuff, and or not linking Lincoln, Riley Riley. Okay. That's a fairly significant difference between those. About one hundred and fifty pounds. Yeah. Ooh. Minimum. Yeah. Lincoln riley. Great. Sounds sounds awesome. But he doesn't know anybody in the NFL. He's never coached in the NFL. He's never coached with guys who toasted the NFL. So who do you hire for his staff who will know how to your? I mean, his learning curve is very very steep. I mean, it's not like Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy Johnson came into the NFL. He knew his way around football. And ran a pro style system at the college level and new all the best players because he's got them all out. That's not what Lincoln Riley is. So he may be a great coach don't get me wrong. But I think it's gonna take him a long time is going to be in high demand after you get through him people are talking about this Matt Camelot what Iowa State or whatever where he's outta. I mean. The ranks are really really thin with with quality candidates because we've gone through so many coaches in the last five years. Editor in chief fan dot com. Jason cold joining us going deep. Dan, Schwartzman, NBC sports radio one when it comes to Aaron Rodgers, look, I don't think he's easiest guy to work with. And you know, the reports we hear out of Green Bay is him and McCarthy definitely didn't see eye to eye, and you mentioned there just isn't a very long list of qualified coaching candidates. Who do you think Jason makes the most sense when you think about the fact that you have to have kind of a unique relationship with Aaron Rodgers and gains respect. Well, Josh mcdaniels makes the most sense because he's the smartest offense have guy out there. Only problem with with Josh mcdaniels is that for all the sort of. High maintenance stuff that people talk about with Aaron Rodgers. And really he wasn't that high maintenance because if he really wanted to push McCarthy out three years ago, he could have he was very patient with this even his career was, you know, you know, get long in the tooth. So, you know, the the people who are laying the blame it Rogers feet. I think this is wrong. But the problem with mcdaniels is he's the kind of guy who will look at people and say my system is quarterback agnostic. In other words, I don't need Tom Brady to run. My sister. No. I love the concerts. The let's get real. I I don't know that that clashing of egos is gonna work for those guys. So then you get into Dave top tubes of their world. But you know, the basically the number one assistant coach with Kansas City people talk about Matt floor being a candidate again, he's one years ago. See basically in Tennessee. I think I think you need to have a strong established personality out there, and there just aren't that many of them? So I think it's a great job. I mean if John Harbaugh become. If I'm the Green Bay Packers. John whatever you need to make this happen. You hear about Jim Harbaugh? Jim Harbaugh always got his you know, I out there looking at what other jobs are out there. There's no question about that. And so he'll be looking around. I just think it's going to be hard for him to leave Michigan at this point in time. He'll be he'll be viewed very dimly. If you lose Michigan right now four against Ohio State. Yes. No better than the third place. Finish the big ten. You're absolutely right about that. The thing about this is with Mike McCarthy. Look, I'm not saying the Packers are wrong to fire Mike McCarthy. I think he had run his course. But after twelve and a half years and success Jason to fire them the way they did on a Sunday after a loss rather than let them coach out this season when the years pretty much over anyway. Did you find it to be somewhat disrespectful? The way they did it. No, I thought they did them a saver. Got him out in the market south. So than anybody else. They got him an opportunity Joe, and you know range next coaching staff. They got him a chance to be first in line. For Cleveland, which is where Dorsey I mean, they know that he's going to go work for Dorsey. In all likelihood, I mean, this is almost like this is a ninety five ninety eight percent lock that he's going to help the Cleveland job. So. What if you know, it's bad if you know, it's toxic. If you know, you're this is what you're gonna do. And you got good quality coach, you let them go. And you send him on his way. Why let him twist in the wind. Why let him have to answer a bunch of questions for the next four or five weeks about what's going to happen? Are you worried about your job? You know, he's gone. You know, people asking questions, I mean, you know, and that's you know, that's not us being wolves. It's just uh being reporters have to chase down a story. Like, you know, you're going to do this things have fallen apart Hugo toxic environment. Everybody's unhappy. You getting second go slick Rabi let the man what's the man going to twist in the wind. So I don't think it was disrespectful at all. And the people who aren't you? Otherwise, I think don't look at the heart realities. How NFL works today. It's really important that if you're going to get fired or you're gonna hire a coach that you do it earlier than later because it's so important put together that staff of the system coaches that work under head coach. So should the jets have let Todd Bowles goal ready. If they're gonna fire them are they gonna fire as Jefferson, I hope so I hate to say, I really kind of hope so as a jet fan, I think. I understand that. But I go back to hire. I mean, I mean, he's not. Things we talked about powers. The funny part about it is the things are so bad around the NFL that I saw this rumor the Kingsbury rose, you know, considering coach coaching candidates head coaching candidate by some people. No way. Yeah. Because he happens to run a pretty cool. While sounds every. Going. Oh, maybe we should hire him. I you know, I can't say this enough. There are not very many qualified head coaching candidates for NFL jobs. Right. Yeah. No, you're right. Simply do not exist of guys where you go. I know he's got chance to be terrific. And so. If you don't know who you're gonna go get you can't you can't, you know, you can't find your your diet. I miss the old. What was it Joe Robbie when he on the dolphins way back in you know, at the end of the sixty nine season. It looked at Edwin pope and said, I'm thinking about fire and Robbie. But I don't know who to hire. That's what Edward Pocos. How about Shula? And all of a sudden that happens it worked out pretty well. If you think about it. That one worked out. Is from from sports Burs mouth, you know, strangely enough, but you know, different different day different era. So, but I mean, there's just like, Dan, it's just not a lot of guys that you sit and go. Yeah. That's why I need to go. Get. What are the teams the best record in the entire league? Jason is Los Angeles. Chargers. They look pretty good. But they kind of a history in the Philip rivers is just not getting it done when they need to are you buying in to the chargers this year. Yeah. I think they're really good. I mean, what what the have a quarterback with the experience they have deep receiving core with you know, the to Williams's Terrell and and Mike with Tina. Now, this guy got great running back with Gortat gets healthy and are really good backup to that. I think if they can get hunter Henry back for the play offs. Doc is really really interesting for for for me. For the most important thing that they have and all this is Ingram and Bosa. Those dudes. Those are serious, and when you can bring to pass rushers like that. You know, you can you can cause a lot of problems for people. So I really like what they what they've got. Now, I think the AFC playoffs. Are really crowded are going to be really really tough. So I think it's going to be the most entertaining of the two brackets by far because I think you're looking at San Diego Kansas City, Pittsburgh doing Houston's really interesting this year. I think it's a fascinating bracket to see who comes out of that. Now, I think you're right. Interesting to see I mean, there's not one team really in the NFL. You look at and say this team clearly is better than anybody else. Because frankly, no one's playing defense right down the NFL, which is unbelievable. Exactly. And can do it a little bit along with Chicago and Dallas Dallas your real quick on Dallas. We have about a minute here. Jerry Jones says I know he's a loyal guy though, Sean Lee comes back. He's gonna start is he out of his mind who you gonna bench for Sean Lee right down that linebacker core. Inches. I think. Put Sandra's you put Smith Leandra out there. I'll run three guys. Why not? I mean what I know. They're not. It's not the most plastic group, you know, but. Bokassa play. So. I. Ride with those guys, you know without a problem. But again, you basically got to middle linebackers, but I'll I'll I'll make it work. Somehow. Those are good football players. No question. Definitely are good football players everybody. Jason call editor in chief offensive dot com. Jason appreciate you hopping on the show, my friend. No problem. You as well. Thank you. Always fun. Talking there, buddy. Jason call. And can do it a little bit along with Chicago and Dallas Dallas your real quick on Dallas. We got a minute here. Jerry Jones says I know he's a loyal guy though. In Sean Lee comes back. "The scalp for a couple of beverages and have all kinds of fun over here on thirty Wabash. Speaking of all kinds of fun where we ate of the NFL season and talk a little bit more about the NFL games. That'll be going on we bring in from CBS sports dot com. The senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco Pete. How are you today? What's up guys? How are you doing? Great kid out of a pod on a Friday. It can't get any better than that canon. Peter not for you can't know, by the way. On the air. Adults is that I have personally to pay one of the best guys in the business. Truly a nice good hearted man my condolences to him and his family. Yeah. You cannot I've never ever met. Anybody who say a bad word about Dan Pompei? It's such a shame. So the bears and jets let's get into bears and the jets come in three and four they got done last week. They were actually hanging tough with the Vikings for a while in the second half happened. What do you see in this game with the with the jets? They get a lot of injury problems things the bears have dealt with in years past. But the jets are coming in here. A real wounded road squad. This is a bad spot for this yet serving Sam darnold on the road against a pretty good defense. And he hasn't been great. He doesn't have a great of ASTA players around him. You know? So he's been inconsistent. He's missed some throws it, and I think this is a good spot for the bears and how they've lost two straight games. AFC east dot gov is served. They could have won that game glasses probably should won the Miami game. So you look the bears are doing some really good thing. I I still think there your way. What they're going to be. But I like the gross. I like what I'm seeing for Matt Nagy? I like what I've seen from Mr. Bisky, though, some inconsistency there that kind of bothers me you said missed some throws made some throws looked good look bad at times overall. What do you think about the progress of Mitch Trubisky? I like it. I mean, look, and I think he's better at times when he gets into a little bit of a rhythm. And then he has a tendency to make some throws. We like you mentioned your goes. Wow. What trump? I mean. That's the stuff. He's gotta clean up. Once he starts cleaning up that stuff. He's going to be a really good quarterback. But you know, I think a lot of people look at him as much more than they thought he was. And I think there's there's a way to get all that stuff out of. And I think it's mechanical, and he'll he'll fix that. It's fixable. And he will be quarterback. You know, anytime you've got three four defense you Outside Linebackers, your ones that usually are making the impact whether it's laurel Lawrence Taylor, Carl banks or whether it's. Swelling and Rickey Jackson whether it's Lamar lengthen and Kevin green. I mean, whoever these names aren't whoever these guys are they're the ones making making a place. Colo- Mack has done it early. Now, he's got a little bit of a sprained ankle. But the guy on the other side has been somewhat of a ghost Leonard Floyd first-round pick out of the university of Georgia all the athleticism in the world doesn't help you any. If you can't be productive on the field. How does he get better for the bears? I thought it would be one of those situations where he would game because there's only so much. The other side. We're going to put you on hold. We lost you. It's like you went into a submarine of some sort. So we're going to put you on hold wanna come back, and we're going to talk to CBS sports side dot com. Peter Prisco when we get back here in a second. Maybe he's doing a promo for that. What's called hunter killer? It's brand new. I saw that coming out. Yeah. With Gerard Depardieu? Oh, no. Butler. So I'm sorry. We've got a back now I could go when you talk about Floyd you figure he's gonna amp up his game by having the other guy opposite, right? I mean think and for whatever reason just doesn't happen for him. I don't know. And you're right in that event. You better be able to rush from the edge. Interesting. You say, you know, there's a three fourths out in in with the Rams. They can't rush it all from the edge. And I think ultimately, you're you're spot on your go. You can't rush on the edge. And that defense, even if you have Erin Donald on the interior that's going to catch up with them. I say, you know, earlier in the week. There are a couple of people talking. They were saying how roquan Smith not getting a lot of talk for being a rookie playing defense in the NFL. And I looked he's third on the team in tackles. I mean, I'm not exactly sure what they expect the roquan Smith to there's no impact place. You don't see him, forcing fumbles. You don't seem intercepting balls. You don't seem in coverage. Batting stuff away. He's just. Playing good solid defense. But he's not doing anything that that's exemplary by any stretch of the imagination. No. But that will come. I mean, these these young kids there has been a little bit time to, you know, for whatever reason you missed that time and that heard instead of back so he's going to be good year ago. He's going I don't deny it. I think he's playing solid defense. I'll give him that. I mean, he's been a blessing to this defense in the big fan GIO. But the reason why national scene is not looking at him saying, hey this. Lashing. Yes, it's not on ESPN. There's no there's no picks fixes and no scooping scores. There's not there's not a lot of that stuff. So that that'll come with him as he gets more comfortable speaking about that yesterday's game. A scoop and score right before. Halftime. I was on a pool where I had a one I was celebrating and cabbage patching. And then all of the sudden the NFL then Albert river on the group of incompetent officials come back. They take a look at it. After being ruled a touchdown. They say that's an incomplete pass. How in the hell does that happen? Yeah. Because if the book is arms going forward, but it looked like he was pulling it in. And then then that makes it a fumble. Through the damn ball backwards. Yeah. But you're if you're is going forward. No matter if the ball goes backwards or not it's still a forward pass. You know that don't you want? I it's a contact makes the ball go backwards. You're still forward, Pat. So he, you know, technically, you got robbed. It should have been touched down. Thank you. Pete all I needed to hear was you say, I got robbed. Now, I feel a lot better. How much was in the pool how much within the pool house on the hundred nothing nothing dramatic quick quick a plane, and you blow that like on grounded ARCHE the parking missed field goal to make it thirty one twenty eight bears ten times kid. Oh that hurts that one's stunk. That would definitely hurt really quickly. I'll look around the other games in the bears division. I mean, the bears are playing a team that they should win again two weeks ago. They should've beat the Miami Dolphins. You've got the lions at home against the Seahawks. But then the Vikings are at home against the saints and Packers at the Rams the bears who were in first and went all the way down to last bas- basically tied with Detroit in one we that could actually reverse in just another week. Couldn't it. Could you know, you would think that the Rams we're going to beat the Packers? Although you never know down Roger winning that thing by himself. You would think I think viking's gonna win this week against the saints. I that one that's the spread on that game weird today. But pick them game. I think it will eventually go to Minnesota minus one but the plan consecutive road games outside the division with your stuff to do. They're coming off a physical game against the ravens. I think the Vikings win. I like Seattle this week. I I'm not a believer. In those lions. I know a lot of people running with the ball. They can get kerryon Johnson go, but I'm not a believer. Then. So after the weekend, I think the bears will be you know, have one more win. I think the lines will lose. I think the Packers will lose although to be close. And I think the Vikings will win. And then then take over the division lead. Division leaders Ken what's wrong with Jacksonville? Well, a lot of things you're quarterback not playing well, but but he's one of those guys that needs everything around them to go. Well, think about this. How many teams could withstand they lost their top receiver in training camp. They lost their top two tight end. They lost the running back. The first half of the first game. He hasn't played at all. They lost their starting left tackle they lost his his backup down to thirteen left. Tackle they lost a backup running back. Scott back out of the backfield grant, and then Yeltsin playing all season long on a bum leg and norwell who they paid a boatload of money to get from Carolina has composed of playing at the level because he's got a foot injury. Edit all up east thinking it up. And then you go the other side of the ball. Those guys are pressing because they think they got to win the game, you know, six nothing every week. And and they're making a lot of mistakes. So add that all up, and that's a problem down there. P we appreciate jumping out with this is always thanks a lot have a great weekend. I take care. Briscoe the senior NFL columnist for CBS sports dot com, and you and Peter know each other a little bit. Yeah. You stand Jacksonville right in for the Florida times when I was down there. He John ocer, Mikey Bianchi. I knew all the guys by name. Yeah. You gotta get along with the press. I had I had one point wanted to become a, you know in the radio radio. So I made sure I paid attention everybody, you know, whether it was time Silverstein or Bob McGinn bay. The guys down in Miami. Edwin pope was still writing down there at the time. But there's another guy Charlie something or another. And I forget his name. He did a nice piece on me when I was in Jacksonville one time, Charles breaker. Okay. Yeah. Wrote for San Francisco then came out to Miami. And started doing some writing for them ended up in Tampa Bay. But I remember it a lot of the writers. And a lot of people always made sure you knew the I knew their name. They knew who I was and was always friendly whenever they would come come through the locker. See you had a plan you have to a plan for after. Networking was. But yet I was networking is finding a way kid. I actually I wanna make sure we we pick up the first album when they actually released one dollars probably just a CD or a release online of Alvarado, the incompetent officials that'll be. That'll be wonderful. Good. What's it? Yeah. Professional river on every time. He speaks. It drives me. Absolutely crazy. Yeah. It was a bad game. Like, I said that was only about the third or fourth bad call that game last night in Pete's mentioned impeach, right. There is a role where if you hit a quarterback in the bonds of going backwards, even though it's harmless going forward, even if he tries to hold onto a clearly right and throws the ball behind them. That that's called an incomplete pass. He reminded me of that one hundred percent, correct. But it's scandalous another rule that protects the offense from their own ineptitude. Eventually quarterbacks will just have the flags on not a bad idea. Well, actually, chairman said it, I don't think much of what he said he was heard my theory haven't, you know, seven hundred seven okay, that's what this is going to become why pay offense and defensive lineman. Right. He can act to cap down probably twenty twenty five million dollars thirty million just pay play seven hundred seven which substitutes and there's a timer on the ball. The ball doesn't lead the quarterback's hand the ball just dissipates into nothing fly anywhere. Then you bring a new one out saying. Yeah. It doesn't leave the hand. It just disappears. You just like in. But it won't disappear. The marvel movie where everybody got dusted. Still has contact with the hands. Yes. It does. Okay. What's it leaves the hands? It can't toss technology is there guys. We don't have to worry about the five jewels being in the guys on. Oh, boy, that guy was something wasn't it on was sitting on the beach at the end of the movie, Donald street guy. You believe that amazing. Why would he do something like that? Usually, they're, you know, I'm not going to say very accommodate. I better. I better be careful. You don't get in trouble. And Yuriko here at the Scott Waterhouse, Ed kitchen, we come back. It'd be time for cross Waddle and Silvy right here on ESPN one thousand three the rock and.

"That would have made them winter, and he would have been a playoff winner already, and that it's always interesting to me when opportunities appear or get taken away because the Minnesota Vikings last year turn case keenum case keenum was a career journeyman that none of us believed in as a quarterback. There's not a person in this audience that believed that he could lead you deep into the play, the Vikings still doth quite indifferent. Right. And they're like, now we'll take that guy, but that defense is such that you don't need a great quarterback. It's not just the difference though. It's their skilled guys. It's their receiver her to really good as well, and they're going to be all the more impressive. Now the dalvin cook is is back or the best college running backs. I've ever seen speaking of college football though. Did you see what happened with Brian Edwards that the big ten network has suspended braille and Edwards four being and Edward. I noticed that, yes. So the big ten network suspending him because he was mad about the Michigan football team. He, he sent out a bunch of tweets that were criticizing the players harshly and by name Ruiz's is weak. Line is weak. Shea is scared bleeping Michigan offenses. So predictable, Michigan football at sadly, one thing, trash, trash. Now, Jim Harbaugh comes back and Chinchar drowning. Jim Harbaugh must be a lot of fun to be around these days. That'll he comes in with number one. It's not true. It's not factual. There's nobody in our program who thinks those things about any player in our team. Let alone the two players described on the other level. It's disappointing that a member of the big ten network would choose to attack the character of two of our players. And I would say that if somebody wants to attack the character of anybody on the ball black, all the ballclub come after me, not our young youngsters, it's a fine line with covering college sports and my mentor at the Miami Herald. Edwin pope never used to criticize athletes by name. If they were below the professional level, he would with the dolphins players, but he would not with the hurricanes players. And I think that line maybe unspoken still exists. I think it's okay to criticize college coaches. But when you specifically start criticizing a nineteen twenty year old kid, it rubs some people the wrong way. It feels professional though. I mean, it does. Oh, it don't in large part because the stadiums, the money being spent the money being made, which is making seven to ten million. A year, it feels like professional football, Ed, Jim harbor, don't worry like we're coming for you. It's come is national football umbrella, and Edwards is longing for a time when Michigan was as good as it was when and Edwards was there. You get a lot of that from the old guys who remember a better program, Brian Edwards pretty done with Jim Harbaugh. It would appear, but I love when the announcers in the booth are almo- mater people or people who are willing to trash, be honest and not just be total Homer. Lamar Thomas got himself fired during the f. i. u. university of Miami fight that involved a guy named Ned, and somebody I think was swinging a crutch as well as helmets. Here's Lamar. Thomas is work on that broadcast. Actually, the police came in order. When talking about you come into. USA get kick. You don't come in Opie playing up your call you the ocean over there across the city down talking more like that. You could talk what. Elevating. We don't, I say, meet outside the team at the ballgame and get it on some more. We don't come into OB. We've had a down here coming. Focused. Now, would we be fair? We read it. We read it. Was in fire to just spend it at that. Both. Thriller isn't a network that had a lot of games seem to be a one offer, Lamar. Ride on the field. There was a burning mattress. Lamar is in the broadcast booth thing. Singing. I believe it's I missed those days so much and so great. One a player wants to sound like an ex player, not a policy. What do you want you want the Homer broadcast or what is it that you want? Yes. Dan school, Greg Cody on ESPN radio, we read it..
