"The fda was not going to budge. They held the power over all interstate. Commerce of latrell. The freedom of choice committees only hope was to try to win over state lawmakers and across nineteen seventy seven to the shock of the fda. They did and again and again saturday. Indiana proved the use of lateral and today the florida legislature approved in lateral has been legalized in seven. Stay eleven states have legal. Thirteen states now have laid trump supporters seem to have the medical establishment on the run. Eventually twenty seven states would make later legal to prescribe in some cases. These bills passed by sometimes overwhelming margins and the politicians that endorse them didn't necessarily believe in trill. I'm signing the legislation but simultaneously wished to advise that. I'm absolutely convinced that there's no scientific evidence whatsoever which supports any contention that layer trail either prevents cures cancer. That's governor edwin edwards. A democrat from louisiana. John birch society members may then leading the efforts but support for lateral laws cut across the political spectrum. Everyone from the most conservative people in congress to shirley chisholm sort of famous unbutton embossed black feminist all saying they were in support legalizing laya. Trill harris poll in june nineteen. Seventy seven showed that a wide majority of the american public supported legalizing laya trail in their states. Only thirteen percent were opposed. So how we're so many people persuaded. Why did the public and the politicians get behind what had been an obscure drug that. Virtually the entire scientific community was calling worthless quackery because the leitch will lobby had framed the debate not as a matter of medical effectiveness but as a question of personal freedom i played with. Fda give us a freedom to choose our own therapy. Why should i an american citizen. Hatha go into black market or smuggle something that i should have the freedom to choose that rhetoric that americans had a right to choose what they did with their bodies might sound familiar..

"Back to the 19 nineties. You will remember. Remember this name Joe and Lynn. Edwin Edwards. Remember him? Remember the Louisiana governor of Louisiana, Okay? Uh, populist, extremely funny guy. He was governor four terms, and then he wound up going to jail for eight years. But that's what happens to anybody who is the governor of Louisiana because it is really banana Republic, But he was he was really He was totally corrupt. Uh, but unabashedly corrupt. And I found some old quotes from him because he was He was incredibly quotable. So I'm going to lay a couple of these things on you. Are you okay? You ready? This is what he said when he was running for Governor 1983. The only way I can lose this election is if I'm caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy. A. Yeah, probably has a point. Here's another one. So he's he's running Well, wait, wait, wait. I lost my, uh, shoot. I hate it when these things pop up and they get in your way. Um, he's running against this guy named David Train back in 83. And he says of his opponent, David Greene. David train is so slow it takes him an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes. Yeah, So this is where please. He's he's under indictment for corruption camp. His campaign motto is Vote for the crook. It's important. Uh oh, okay. And then he said, Now, remember, he was running member David Duke. Who was the he was the KKK guy? Sure. So he's running against David Duke. And he says The only thing we have in common is we're both wizards under the sheets. Oh, my God. Oh, my goodness. It's guys hung up on his. Uh oh, guys. Brilliant Edwin Edwards. He's dead. Dead at 93 years old, served four terms as Louisiana governor and how much time in jail? How much Simon? Eight years, two terms to two terms. They have terrible down there. Prison, sir. Spending sentences. I mean, come on. You miss these kind of guys, though. I mean these lovable rogues anyway, we say farewell to Edwin Edwards. Now Eric Adams, Eric Adams to Washington like Jimmy Stewart did in the old movie and, uh, met with Joe Biden. Now I'm wasn't entirely clear to me, Joe that Biden knew who Eric Adams was or who he was meeting. Oh,.

"Borough. It's a great pleasure to have you here on the show today before we get back into talking about your work in the prisons I noticed in your bio that you were from western louisiana vernon parish to be exact Near leesville louisiana. I when i lived in houston back in the early eighties. I would take out a leave out of houston in the morning. Drive over to beaumont lake charles and once or twice i drove right up the sabine river on the louisiana side Just straight north. In going up you know in looking at the little towns in louisiana. That's a part of louisiana. You don't hear about very much far. Western a lotta pines timber operations Paper mills and things of that nature all up through there but it was an interesting little area not at all like new orleans or the cajun areas at all. It's much different right right. Defining would and that's kind of discount. A lot of folks and fanny would timber a lot of industry this country. It's a little bit like east texas. The part of east texas. That's closest to the louisiana border You got some big lakes up there. You got to lead a band. sam rayburn. That's moreover in texas toledo been splits. The line between louisiana and texas Good bass lakes You get farther north Caddo lake Well i think that that's kind of in. Both you get up toward shreveport. I always enjoyed that area. I thought it was nice. And like you saying it's really back in the country you know it. Kinda primitive land because the mississippi louisiana purchase with the land ryan by the mississippi river was estaban river was the border of taxes and so calculated river drying atlanta that with a real true land in early ages early time of our country so they would park is is boating lake charles and the portuguese there would get off the ship in the boat and so that kind of they would marry the india and so counter culture of the people little bit. It's still bit different. Also people don't realize this. There was some dutch influence in western louisiana. You have the little town of wally. I think there's one called dewitt And people don't realize that there was a dutch influence in western louisiana sharia so nature of german influence a lot of germany and thoughts to right. It's fascinating those kinds of things are so fascinating to me. So tell me you talked a little bit about Your what we've been doing in the prisons here and what you're gonna do. We're going to get back to that but if you don't mind tell us a little bit about you. How you came up how you ended up Getting to where you are today. Well my mom was take. My dad was the farmer and we had gatling open range and so we grew up. You know four and and the preemptive but she and we all go to college and so what we wanted to go or not. We had to go and cheat that. I needed to go to. Lsu associate took me now and put me out. Don't you talk out boy. it's the right after. Yes ma'am so. There was a struggle. I'm telling you. It was really hard at different worlds. But i worked at the barn and we work and got through and in anyway. Then i wound up working for the farm bureau and and wound up having my degree with education. I'm back then. Job came opening department of corrections. The run farther than i got that job. And so there that was funded by the governor edwin edwards and then the rather than job came open. I won't be a prison warden. And so i applied qualified technically. But i never worked underprivileged before and so i told her governor. Isa i give you the java camp to keep it that you won't be sorry. I can do it and so i got the message from my mom. She said when. I told her i'm going to be printed award. She said i'm gonna tell you one thing. Thank you right. You went to church every time to door to open and he did. God go Accountable at those men have a chance to know him that yeah that night. I did that for execution. I did not deal that. Say anything about it so in everything. Is mugger everything. My mother had told me came back to haunt me. That i was alive. Human on earth. And if we're not committed myself to really really do everything in my power to change the culture of the prison and change the pink and so it was from her and that was a big deal to me and my father. He had a favorite scripture number. Read it to you if you don't mind second chronicles seven fourteen. Then if my people who are called by my name with turn and change their way in pray i will turn my back toward them and heal their land. So that's kind of of candidate there but that's kind of what prison is. He heal their land because they did with the seminary now turned back to god. And that's what we really need to do in this country and we say revival coming from the president and what really do and so Further flights have changed. And we we see all the pain. It's called all the crimes they commit. And then we wanted to change. That's we see in america. They see it a great change in our president and a lot of folks moving to way we are that goal and we are bit sydney The we we know. It's painful to know this but people typically do not change unless they're confronted with with what i would call an intractable situation. something that they can't talk their way out of weasel their way out of Run their way out of that's when people finally Sit down and look in the mirror and prison is where that can happen. I i've been in a corporate investment world for forty two years and companies quite often if they're facing bankruptcy or considerable difficulty they will take Are you looking for your dream home. "And in dog years it was give the state drama in 1988. Everybody knows that didn't turn out so great in 92. It was either me or David Duke. There is some folks ain't made them want a few 16 years I give to this state than a federal jury thought they decide my fate. They wouldn't give up, but they put your governor away and they thought for sure, that's where I'd end my days. They sent me to prison. Did my time took the blame. Ready to park close. Uh, the old days on TV folks can't get enough. It's Governor E W. E. Edwin Edwards. Well, former governor of Louisiana, the real Edwards Yeah, Yeah, We just found out he's in hospice. Yeah, he has put himself in hospice, which basically means he's being cared for at home instead of being in the hospital, he says, even though he's 93 years old, and he does realize that you know this is going to end someday, he said. This doesn't necessarily mean that he is about to die. Most people here hospice They think you just got a few days left, he says. This is basically him being cared for in a convenient way less trouble for everybody not taking up a hospital bed, but you know, he's like I've been on borrowed time for the last 20 years. Shit. You know, the thing about Edwin Edwards is he's kind of like the textbook. Corrupt politician. He even went to prison. Got out and write it again. You know the the famed between him and and David Duke in in the late 91, which means you know one and started serving in 92. We were there. Uh, covering this whole thing. We had David Duke on the air. And really, we really pissed him off. Not so much about his. You know his leanings which are obvious, but I remember Billy had made fun of the picture on the back of his book. What was on his book? Well, he was sitting On one of those tree limbs of a live oak tree that swooped down low to the ground, and he had his legs across very effeminate Lee and he had like a very light. Pale yellow or pink sweater kind of draped over his shoulders. And, you know, kind of tied to finesse. The nineties. Fashion wasn't that great anyway, But Billy had just told him, he said. You look like a mo sitting there swinging in this live oak tree, and he did not find that funny for some reason. She didn't think it was funny being compared to a gig. Former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan didn't think being you know, compared to a gay guy was very complimented. Kind of reminds me of this Vladimir Putin book. Have you ever seen that? Oh, yeah, that's pretty gay Pose to. Yeah, There's a book called Vladimir Putin Life coach available on Amazon, and it features Vladimir wearing like jeans. Tight jeans and a white shirt and he's sitting kind of a feminine anyway. David Yeah, a lot of younger listeners probably think, How could this Edwin Edwards guy Have gotten elected so many times if he was that corrupt and you've got to remember he was running against the Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan in in that one particular case, As a matter of fact, there were bumper stickers and billboards out that said, Vote for the crook. It's important goods. The the alternative. I think, Edwards. This guy like that Donald Trump thing with the media encouraged Donald Trump to run because we're pretty sure they were going to beat him. Governor. Edwards encouraged David Duke to run because he thought it would split votes between them and himself and Buddy Roemer, which then would help Edwin Edwards. If David Duke plowed over Romer, I mean, just put him away, so it was them head up also in the campaign. Kathleen Blanco, a Democrat, announced her candidacy earlier in the year, then dropped out. Because the other two candidates were just too popular. For what? Ah, man. Well, well known. I guess the probably be the I don't know if you can count. David Duke is popular, but he was well known. He got almost a half a million votes. Ami. Yeah, that's a shame. You know, people. People came out for the guy. That's the craziest Well, we wish. Edwin Edwards, all the look recovering from this most recent little situation, got blood. Oxygen is low blood pressure's down, had some pain in his lung, but he's being taken care of at home, and we'll see That works out for him. Just go around. You know, it's sad when anybody dies, but the guys in his nineties and he's not dead yet. He's not dead yet. He's in hospice right now. But you know anybody that knows anything about hospice knows. It's probably not a good sign. He may have been in hospice before he served in World War two. No. He joined the military right at the end of World War two. He joined in 1945. So you know that's how old he is, You know. Um, went to prison Got out ran again and he's been married. At least twice is it didn't want more than that. I think one of his wives had a TV show, right? Called wife of the governor. He was on it briefly. Didn't last long. I don't remember much about it, but she was kind of pretty wasn't sure. Yeah. If I'm not mistaken, and then it didn't work out. Trina, was that her name? That's who he's married to now. There was another one before that. Was, you know, fairly popular? Yeah, I forgot. Can't keep up. Trina Grimes. Kind of easy on the eyes. You know good for you, Edwin Edwards. You old sly dog. You go into town there. Hey. Well, look, nobody lives forever. Um, you know, obviously right, But what a life. This guy's lived people that don't understand how he kept getting elected. It was basically Entertainment. He was popular even though there may have been some some crimes. Some bribes, some scheming for sure, um, different things that he was charged with over the years. He was entertaining, and that's kind of what's wrong with our political system. Today. It's too entertaining. People are just looking for entertainment. You know, these guys are in charge of your life. Maybe you noticed during the pandemic. They could just make rules that don't even follow the Constitution. They can just limit your freedoms tomorrow like that. There was a political party called anyone But Edwards. Yes, that's why they came out with vote for the crook. How about that? Well, you got Hey, look, you know the guy's a crook. But at least he owns it. He wears it on his sleeve. And that was 30 years ago. And as disgusting as that is, you gotta have to admire that. You know somebody that owns it. The fact that their uh what was he? He was found guilty on 17 of 26 counts, including racketeering, extortion, money laundering mail fraud wire Friday, downloaded MP three's illegally. Alright. Did he steal music? Okay. Maybe not that last one, but the rest of it. That's That's an awful lot of stuff there and then his wife got a T V show. Do you think that that covered all the legal costs? Uh, probably not. Remember, Blagojevich did it up in Illinois. People, sometimes in the south, very judgmental of the problems up in Chicago, and I often remind them an accent..

V. sports leader let's talk about professional basketball your Golden State Warriors they sort of the unofficial second half of the season taking on the rockets at the center on Thursday Connor with her no sense of to join us on the on the gas line Connor does a very good job of covering the war years for the San Francisco Chronicle Conor we always appreciate the time how you doing today ma'am I'm good thanks for having me thanks for coming on we'll start with Andrew Wiggins and these first few games with the warriors I would think and you know this very early sort of grading period with Wiggins so far you've gotten I'd say would you expect from Andrew Wiggins a guy who can get to the basket a guy with a lot of potential you seen some stuff from him defensively Steve Kerr has been very praiseworthy of him it looks like you know with a little bit more time and obviously when everybody gets back fully healthy this angel weakens thing sure has the makings of a guy that can that can fit and and help the warriors thrive in a spot where they really needed at the window at the weak spot yeah I think it's gone as well as you possibly could have hoped early now granted it's an extremely small samples are the only game where he looked as good as you could possibly expect the thing that's really impressed me is that the two biggest locks on him in Minnesota where extrapolation is defense about for and he in his short time ago in the state he's he's made strides in quieting his daughters in those departments is not select and really impressive you haven't taken a lot of that mid range which you kind of phone love with in Minnesota was mainly focusing on driving to the ram getting easy looks and knocking down wide open three pointers ammunition well over fifty percent and both his overall field goal percentage and from three point range Allen and his defense I've been really impressed by his defense she always had the potential to be an elite defender he has the lanky have that lettuce is but you Houston showed a Minnesota partly because yet the shoulder such a heavy load ostensibly and you know he's been getting the passing ladies the blocking shots you've been Gardi multiple positions switching off ball screens doing everything that you are asking him to do and to me that's the biggest thing if he can build up that go on in the neck the them really well for how he's gonna fit alongside staffs and collect I love you know see and we can put it on the day I can get to the ram because it's he's so good at it any at six eight I like seem to more of it especially on a team that has Steph curry and Klay Thompson you know two of the greatest snipers in the history of basketball on the perimeter next year I think his ability to put on the deck and go to the ram is gonna be definitely something has to be fun to watch what you think of paschal Friday night that rookie game of one I just kind of disappointed he had twenty three three and two three rebounds two assists he played about as well as almost anybody in that game the MVP went to bridges McHale bridges but would you think a passcode you learn anything from watching him in that up tempo game Friday yeah I think it was a mild bridges but yes I can see a stand that confusion there no he he he I thank you deserve MVP he was so upset you know twenty three point I think like seventeen minutes was all over the floor really you will you saw is what he was doing early in the season when he was a virgin as somewhat of a record of the year candidate you know beating guys one one I think you're really someone who is best when he's in kind of that playground type atmosphere where you just going straight up Hey guys go one on one breaking down pretty damn players and I so and I think he still needs to figure out at times how to thrive in a motion offense but yeah that all start betting kind of plays to his strength so I wasn't shocked to see him do do well in that game but you know given the other names in that game guy like guy Williams and jot job a rant look at concerts I didn't expect him to be in the B. P. conversation so yeah that was good you know not definitely nice to the warriors actually spent he was their only representative at all star weekend we're talking to Carla turno covers the warriors for the San Francisco Chronicle make sure you follow him on Twitter at Khan under score kron of.
