"Whether to suspend a decade's old abortion drug, he'll make a ruling soon on a conservative group's request to revoke or suspend if a person. The 64 teams begin the men's NCAA basketball tournament today, NBA, the Celtics one, the warriors lost and packers quarterback Harold Rogers says he doesn't tend to play for the jets. That's closer Edwin Diaz injured his knee while celebrating Puerto Rico's win in the world baseball classic. Global news 24 hours a day powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries. I'm John Tucker, and this is Bloomberg. All right, thank you, John. It's 6 24 on Wall Street. I Amy Morris. This is Bloomberg daybreak, and we continue to follow the impact of Credit Suisse, Tapping into the Swiss Central Bank for $50 billion. Let's look at market reaction with Bloomberg markets live reporter Valerie titel. It's actually $54 billion, but CHF 50 Valerie, how real is the European credit and equity market balance in the European session? Yeah, I think that's the questions for markets right now. The Credit Suisse is going ahead with this 3 billion Bond buyback, which is going to improve their capital ratios in the short term by buying these bonds below par, so that's caused their short term bonds to rally this morning. They were treating it very distressed levels yesterday. CDS spreads have narrowed as well as that share price recovers. And then broadly across the European credit spectrum, both high yield and IG credit spreads are rallying today, but they might be off the highs, but they sure have an undone the widening that we've seen in the last 5 sessions, but I think the fragility of the market yesterday really showed us that there are some dire worries that European banks are going to struggle on a higher cost of funding. You know, this years of cheap funding that we've had due to low and negative interest rates in Europe has created some structural problems. How long is it going to take to work those out? Many people were drawing some parallels to the issues Deutsche Bank had in the past, and we need to remember, when Deutsche Bank did have those problems, rates were nowhere near this high. They were zero. And with the ECB, not containing inflation yet, there's an argument that these yields have will go higher and European banks will continue to struggle. So what does it mean for the ECB today and for the fed next week? Yeah, look, we need to remember the ECB has one mandate. They have an inflation mandate, the ECB does not have a growth mandate, but perhaps they're going to be scarred by the policy mistakes they made in the past, remember they hiked right into the 2008 global financial crisis. They hiked right again into 2011 sovereign debt crisis, perhaps those scars of those policy mistakes are going to affect the decision today. It is a finely balanced in between 25 and 50 in the markets right now. But it goes without saying the ECB is really not they have not finished their job. They've only just started QT about two weeks ago. I think that just hammers home the path forward for the ECB there. They're on a journey and the journey to ren and inflation as has just begun, but the fragility of the banking system is definitely on people's minds as the ECB convenes. Okay, so what are you going to be watching for in the next few days and in the next few weeks, we've got about 30 seconds here. Look, to me, the silence from the fed is deafening. Why have we not heard from them? Yes, it's in the blackout period, but the blackout period is self imposed. They need to leak something to the media. Are they going to pause or are they going to continue hiking? I think the longer the silence goes on, the more the market worries that Powell is preparing his Vulcan moment. All right, Bloomberg markets live reported Valerie ti tell, very interesting. Thank you so much for joining us today. Let's check the markets now S&P futures down 6 points. Dow futures are 74, 74 points lower, NASDAQ futures are higher, 25 points higher, ten year treasury, down 1330 seconds the yield at three and a half percent. "The Major League Baseball network, Michael Harris, the second of the Atlanta Braves one in the national league in the national league, his teammate Spencer strider, as expected, finished second, had 8 first place votes. And adley rushman finished second the American League and Taylor, you as an Orioles fan. This is important because he finished second he's awarded a full year of service time now for Rodriguez Harris Spencer's try to really doesn't matter because all those guys have signed to a long-term deal. So we'll see if the Orioles step up and pay rutman, right? I mean, he's now moved along a full year service time. First of all, they need to, but that sound you're hearing right now is Michael I's trashing his office because he lost a whole year of service time on him. Well, I don't think it was that. But as I've said before, there's a chance a rush made it was one of the top ten catchers in baseball in 2021. The cubs released Jason Hayward as expected. Since we did a pod last week, the astrocyte dusty baker to one year deal, but they parted ways with general manager James click who had been offered a one year extension. We're going to be talking about that with Alan Gonzalez coming up. Some of the signings, relievers are getting paid. Edwin Diaz, 5 years and a $102 million, although there's so much deferred money in this deal that the present day, dollar valuation is for markedly last, I'm guessing somewhere in the range of 85 to $90 million or so. Rafael Montero signed with the Astros three years and $34 million, Clayton Kershaw had an agreement with the Dodgers similar to last year's one year and about $17 million. And Taylor, I'm looking forward to this beyond the conversations with Alvin with Sarah Lang's with Paul henkins. We're going to be talking with DL Epstein. "Thinking about what would have been his max offer from another team. So he's the first 20 million a year reliever the highest was Liam Hendricks. It's 18 million a year, but that was only for three years. That was a three year 54 million. This is double that. So yeah, I don't think Diaz gets more than what 70, maybe, maybe he gets a four year $70 million deal from another team. So they way overpaid, but I'm with you. They needed him. This is the first step because the Grom is going to opt out. Chris Bassett's got off that Taiwan walker is going to opt out. So they got to rebuild their rotation as well. Plus what, Seth lugol is a free agent. They got to rebuild almost their entire pitching staff and that this is step one. I'm curious to see what steps two, three, four, and 5 are going to be. Yeah, the luxury, this luxury that if you're the mets, you can take on if you're any other team and you've seen how relief pitchers go, the volatility of relief pitching in the game, no way would you do a deal like that. I mean, look at the Houston Astros with the guys. They built this unbelievably historically great bullpen on these pieces and parts. Guys who are cast off for a lot less than $20 million a year. That's what I was just going to say. Do you want to do any of these smart and GMs want to spend their money on a $20 million a year closer? No way. You'd much prefer to put that money into a starting pitcher or a premium offensive player. But the mets, you know, they have the money, their payroll next year is going to be absolutely ridiculous, but Steve Cohen could afford to go over the luxury tax. That's not a roadblock for the mets. Isn't it amazing that trumpets seemingly would play a factor? Like he's a popular figure. It's all a scene. It's paying for entertainment. It's like the trumpets like put it over the top for the mets to retain Edwin Diaz beyond the fact that he's a great reliever. Okay, you mentioned some of the opt outs or seeing them all over baseball, Anthony Rizzo leaves the Yankees, Carlos Correa, Xander bogarts, any of those jump out to you. No, I mean, look, I think we're seeing, you know, after the lockout after the pandemic, I think we're going to see teams willing

"Yeah. But aside from Turner, I think some of the kind of mid tier pictures I'm talking about will sign early. Like if I'm Jose Quintana, I would like to sign at a place that tells me I'm going to have a good starting job right away. Because I think there's a lot of pitchers who are Quintana esque who might take his spot otherwise and leave him in a position where he comes into a team where they were targeting Carlos verdon and they didn't get him. And so they signed two kind of mid tier guys and hope one of them works out. I think going to a place where they say, hey, you're going to be a good fit here, and that could be the Cardinals for him. It actually seems like he was a pretty good fit there. With their defense, what they're trying to do, that he would just want to rip off a band aid and get it done early. I would have actually picked Edwin Diaz as a person to sign early, and I guess worked out kind of well. Just because he is the only person of his class in the market. And so he can kind of set the market where he wants to, but he also would probably just as soon stay with the mets was the vibe I got from him. And so that seems like a thing that could get done early in free agency where he says everyone can be your best bids. Okay, Steve, do you want to match great? We're done. And I guess he basically just skipped all the steps, but if you're the only person of a class, like Diaz is and like Aaron judge is really, there's no Aaron judge esque player in this class, then you can just, you can negotiate when you want. You can tell people, hey, I'm taking next week, or hey, I'm picking in February, and that's fine. They have another options. Well, I appreciated your musical chairs analogy, though I'm still going to wait for Scott Boris to weigh in with the official description of this year's free agent class and whether this off season is like a regatta or whatever nautical analogy he chooses to use. However, I did want to say because I didn't adequately praise the Phillies when we were talking about the World Series. And I will note that in my article, I did hand it to the esters. I also within the article handed it to the Phillies as well. And celebrated their run that they made. And I think they're kind of an argument in favor of going wild in free agency, right? And you could say that the Padres are that too, the opponent that they beat, I guess, more so on the trade market than free agency, but a bit of both. But really, like the Phillies, they tried to do what the Astros did, right? And to some extent and rebuild. Yeah, and it completely sputtered and stalled out. And it looked like they weren't going to be good. And then they did the only thing they could do other than start over at that point, which is bringing tape to brewski and have him spend some money, which they did, and it worked at it almost worked in the best possible way. It didn't work quite as well as it did for the 2019 nationals, but within a couple games of working that well. And really, they were no one's idea of ideal roster construction or elegant team building or efficient spending or any of that. But as it turned out, they needed really every last win and every last dollar that they spent. And they are the walking proof of the old maxim about how you just have to get into the playoffs and after that, anything can happen. So much as I dislike the expanded playoff field, if you're someone who enjoys playoff chaos, then I think they were a fine argument in favor of it. And they are also an excellent argument for spending and for signing some players who could potentially put you over the top because all you have to do is get there. You don't necessarily have to be a great team. You can still beat great teams in October. And of course, they did it in an extremely fun and exciting way. But we should talk a little bit about the player just at the top of this market. I don't know if he dictates the direction of the market or whether he's just so singular that there's no real facsimile of him that will sort of be waiting to see where he signs, who knows, but I'm talking about Aaron judge who, as you said, coming off this amazing season, and as you noted, this free agent quest could have been even richer than it was, not just with Diaz, but Nolan Arenado, who we talked about, he very well could have been a great free agent, Adam Wainwright, et cetera but judged on his own just that's a ton of intrigue there where he will go. I know you don't know no one actually knows. But the terms are pretty interesting to me and no one knows what those will be either. But you did have to guess and the fangraphs readers, the crowdsourced audience, they also speculated. And so what do you give a guy who is coming off one of the best seasons ever, but is also going to turn 31 in April and doesn't have the greatest health track record and no matter how good he is, almost can't be as good as he was this season. So you know that there's some amount of regression coming even though when you factor in the regression. He's still projects to be one of the very best players in baseball. Yeah, I'm not certain that the number of years I predicted judge for is right. I projected him to get a 9 year contract at $35 million per year. I went more back and forth on the number of years than on the average annual value. And I know that's kind of a weird way to get at it, but I feel like players kind of think that way too. And, you know, that number is higher than Anthony Rendon's average annual value, which is kind of target a lot of players going to be shooting for. I think the crowd had a year shorter, but for slightly more.

We do see a pullback in oil this morning and that number is bigger than those numbers I just mentioned. However if you look at the last month, equities are up more than what we see oil and so we can sort of deduce that there's still a lot of hope in the market. And even though China has come out over the weekend and said that it will, it will be unswerving in its support of these original COVID zero policies, we're still seeing some people that are hoping for the best. "Started him, and you heard the answer? Carl, I know things, and there were things that I that I'm privy to that you're not. And kind of into the conversation at that point. Like, okay, well, are you going to share that? No, I'm not. So I think so many of these decisions and I'm sure you would agree are rooted in information that the organization has that they media who speculate and guess and first guess don't have. So for me, a couple of points of strategy in this series which would be really interesting. As you know, Juan Soto since the trade deadline you and I were on the show, the trade deadline show, when we got word that that deal went down and we all lauded the Padres and rightfully so for being aggressive and for making that deal and for a lot of his time with the Padres Juan Soto was struggled, but in talking with Padres people, they really feel like is it bats in the last week have been better. Carl, I tend to think of sodas being a big stage guy. I think he loves moments like this. He certainly going to be familiar with the pitching staff of the mets. He is good career numbers against a lot of the guys that he might face in this series, including the closer Edwin Diaz, and here's the other part about that, Carl. It doesn't look like the mets when you look at the construction of their bullpen because they lack a shutdown left hander. They don't really have the antidote, so to speak. What do you make of that? And how do the mets want Soto? I think how they deal with the late game and it's interesting. If Soto and Machado were coming up in the 8th inning and you're ahead, Diaz is in the game. He's a Craig kimberley, strikeout rate. It's just an historically great season. Prior to that or depending on the situation on the scoreboard, yeah, you're right, Joelle Rodriguez got a change up. Peterson's got a slider, and then if you're able to get Soto out, the three batter rule, you then have to face Machado, and he destroys writers. He's got an 8 55 OPS against lefties, and he gets righties he's got 12 homers against lefties I should say, Thai 5th with Brandon drury. So look, this part of lineup construction. This is what cyber and preller and Melvin are all aware of. It's what buck is aware of. Seth Lugo probably is the guy that goes there before he's got the great curve ball. The right hander with a Greek. So I think that's probably the answer. And I think if the situation dictates that is an absolute conversation, we're going to I've seen art was written about the Met's inability to land a lefty, specialist, but look, the rules, the rules eliminate the Louvre, the guy that can get one left out. They eliminate that. But there have been articles written about the mets didn't get a left handed reliever at the bullpen. At the trade deadline, the mets didn't go out and tracer Wilson Contreras to bolster the offense at the deadline. You know, a whole bunch of things that have been written, and I don't know, did you lose sight of the fact that 101 games they finished tied with the Atlanta Braves? People hurt on the last three series against Atlanta. What about the nationals and the cub series? Look, you can 2020 this thing and look in the rearview mirror all you want. The deal is now you have the guys that you want it. You have Scherzer, you have degrom, you have DS, you have Lindor, you have Alonso, you made these moves from Canada. It's unfortunate that Marte is hurt, but let's go. Let's throw the dice out in the on the table and see where we land. On the padre side, it's very interesting, Josh hayter in his first weeks with the Padres just got lit up just so he did his last week with the brewers and I know where the padre settled was. Look, this is someone who needs rest. He is much better when he's limited to one inning. He's much better when he's not pitching on consecutive days. And so you go into the series, you feel great about Josh hater, especially in game one. But Carl, you know how the postseason goes. Like we're levers, the phone rings a lot. And there are going to be situations when he's going to have to go on back to back days. And one potential matchup that I'm just fascinated by and I'm just imagining is Josh hayter coming into the game to close out a game and let's say it's at the bottom of the mets lineup and buck showalter rolls out Francisco Alvarez, who just looks like he's a big Homer waiting to happen. Choose author gene. Look, he could be one Soto in his first postseason. He could be Xander bogarts. He could be going all the way back to Miguel Cabrera. Look, he's a threat. There's no doubt about it. The question is going to be how he handles the moment if that moment presents itself. If he's in the lineup, how it presents itself against a guy like you, Darvish. He obviously has shown a penchant for swinging at the first pitch, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's the first pitch is a good pitch. But yes, that is that is one of the things to look forward to. To me, bust through these teams in a lot of ways, mirror each other. And in the Nick Martinez soiree, Luis Garcia, south with Mara hoon and tin hill, they all can come in, the lefties can get lefties out, but they're not great against ratings. You know, the splits are what they are. So yes, that's one of the neat matchups, but this is going to be a fascinating watch and you're right. Bob Melvin uses Josh hayter to win a game tonight and you're up three to two tomorrow, do you bring Josh hater back, even though, as you said, it's one inning? Does it have to be one day? Can he go again? His arm slots kind of been all over the place a little bit and sometimes it's a little more effective when it's lower, the velocity is higher when it's up. I guess a million questions in a city that has a million baseball fans for this team and they are rooting so hard in New York. Challenge is going to be trying to win in this environment for a San Diego team that has to come across the country and deal with city fields. Yep. And I think if you're in the Padres Clubhouse, one of the things you're thinking about is let's get a lead and let's start to feel that great mets fan angst. Right out of the gate. And we'll see how that goes before we go. I just want a quick thought from you on each of the other three series. You get the Phillies. You get the cardinals and the other national league series. So you know, it's interesting. I think the cardinals in the same way that the mets may be kind of showing their hand about how they want to go the idea that they're starting Quintana and game one. I've heard one of the reporters describe the Cardinals approaches be prepared for piggybacking. The flaherty injuries has hamstrung them all year. We're obviously limited to them. They're in the playoffs, but I'm concerned about the Cardinals pitching. And it's so strange. The Phillies didn't exactly burst through the door in September. They played really good at the end and got a big win against the Houston team and we've seen Wheeler Enola look great. This sort of perception versus perhaps reality,

"Two run Homer and Edwin Diaz got the save his entering theme song was performed live by Timmy trumpet and Anaheim Garrett Cole cruising along with 5 innings had allowed only two singles in the 6th that infield single and error and then a three run Homer by the amazing Shohei Ohtani his 30th, the angels topped the slumping Yankees three to two yanks off tonight and then a big series this weekend with Tampa Bay. John stash, I want to Bloomberg sports, Amy. All right, thank you, John. It is 6 37 on Wall Street time to take a look at stocks and some of the names that are moving in the pre market. For that, we're joined by Bloomberg radio and TV markets correspondent creedy Gupta, creedy good morning, thanks for taking the time with us. Yeah, good morning, Amy, as fascinating time to look at some of the micro because we have a lot going on in the chip sector specifically. I want to really narrow in here on Nvidia shares NVDA is your ticker. Those shares down about 5 and a half percent in the pre market. This is coming at a really crucial time for geopolitics between the United States and China. We know tensions have been ramping up. We also know tensions around Taiwan specifically have been ramping up, which by the way, a lot of the world's chips come from. So anything you have in your iPhone to your washing machine to your car. It's probably coming and originating from Taiwan, specifically from Taipei. So any geopolitical tensions there are going to have ripple effects throughout the chip specter like Nvidia and now to really top it off a cherry on top of a pretty bad Sunday as I like to say, you actually have a ban from the U.S. government on the export of artificial intelligence chips to China. The idea here being that if you want to actually reach the Chinese consumer or make sales to China, you have to get special government permission at the moment for a company like Nvidia that has such a multinational business. They are warning that it's going to hit their bottom line and hit it big. Hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue at stake here, and that warning that they've issued remember after just shortly after reporting earnings as well has the stock really reeling here and it's not just Nvidia. You are seeing it ripple across a lot of these chip names. Take a look at Advanced Micro Devices, for example, AMD is your ticker they're down 3.7%, a similar story for Intel IN TCs, your ticker down 9 tenths of 1%. Remember, they also just opened a new manufacturing facility for chips in Ohio, a groundbreaking that President Biden had actually attended. Remember, you've been very vocal about the chip sacks and about simply bringing some of that manufacturing capacity overseas back onto U.S. soil. So that's going to be a crucial crucial piece of the equation. And of course another major. And I'm going to say the largest U.S. chip manufacturer, which of course is micron MU's, your taker also down about two and a half percent. So you can really see Amy, the exposure here to China is magnifying the likes of Nvidia and therefore the stock decline is also equally magnified. And really quick, crazy. Let's look at what's going on with Bed Bath & Beyond. Bed Bath & Beyond the retail favorite that has really turned into a stock that people around the world are watching. We're talking Tom Mackenzie on Bloomberg television earlier. He said, never step foot in Bed Bath & Beyond bike can tell you all about the stock. That's how big of a deal this is. They're talking about a turnaround plan. They're talking about even getting more hands on their liquidity by closing stores and also selling millions of shares of stock. Those that hangover really dropped the shares about 27% in the market yesterday today, down about 6%, Amy. All right, Bloomberg radio and TV markets correspondent creedy Gupta always a pleasure thank you for joining us. Looking at stocks as a whole ahead of the open S&P futures down 30 Dow futures down 201 points NASDAQ futures down 134. The ten year treasury down one 32nd, the yield at 3.19%. Much

"In a short playoff series. And there's a lot of teams that their depth over one 62 gets minimized a little bit in a short series. So yes, I think the mets are as good as anybody in a short series. Maybe not better than Houston or the Dodgers, but just as good. And I think that's interesting as you think about best of 5 or even best of 7. Yeah, Dodgers, when the first game of the series last night, and that meant that Edwin Diaz did not have an opportunity to pitch. I wanted to ask you about this. Timmy trumpet was on hand. The Australian born musician who generated the music that is played when Edwin Diaz comes into games and because there was no save opportunities, he couldn't play it live, he will possibly tonight. Who knows sometime later in the week? Either way, Jesse, I think this is become the most anticipated walk up situation for any pitcher in baseball, any reliever, and I covered Mariano Rivera when they played enter Sandman by, you know, was covering the Padres with Trevor Hoffman became their closer. They would play hell's bells. I think this is surpassed everything we've seen. What do you think? Yeah, I mean, you probably know more about all that history than I do. This is what I love about it. It's reminding me of winter league balls type of music, you know? And how many players have said might be the NHL? Yeah, a little bit. How many players have said we need more of that fund that anticipation that the music this and that. So yeah, it's got that feel to it. I think he's going to play tonight one way or another. By the way, I mean, the mets let the let he off the hook in that first thing. Buck showalter of all people. One, two count, lefty on the mound. Why is he running Francisco Lindor took the, just destroyed that inning and then of course, they lose by a run there and Jake Reed is getting a save buster. I don't know about this Dodgers bullpen. I know kimbrough had been used yesterday, but kimber the day before hasn't been great. But I think walk up music for closers should be a thing in every ballpark. And it is, in some, but it really should be a light show, the music, live music, if you can do it, maybe that becomes a thing for closers. You have a live musician just for them to play their song and you get the lights going and you get a little bit of a winter winter ball feel to it. Yeah, I remember when I went to a Nashville predators game, I always say three, four years ago with my son, the atmosphere, and that sense of anticipation was so extraordinary, and I actually reached out to people in baseball. Like, have you been to one of these predator games? Because there's that great feel and the interaction between what's going on on the field or in the ice and the fans in a way that I hadn't seen. So this is cool that we're going to get this and yeah, I hope that everybody in a really builds on that. I want to ask you about a couple of injury developments we've seen in baseball and get your sense of how significant you think these are yesterday, the shame to clan of hand, torch one of the best starter starting pitchers in the American League and a top candidate for American League say young award was in the bullpen and they scratched him because of what they said was his shoulder impingement and mcclanahan told reporters he hopes this isn't a big deal. He doesn't anticipate it's going to be a big deal. I watched the video of his interaction with Kevin cash. He's manager when he was scratched and you see mcclanahan very emotional Jesse and I don't know if I'm taking mcclanahan's explanation at face value, not because he's lying or anything like that, but maybe because he just is hoping for good news when they probably have a sense that it's not good news, whatever's going on at shoulder. Yeah, I think they took the hopeful tact. I listened to Kevin cash afterwards. It was kind of like wishful thinking. If you saw the video be warming up in the bullpen and then stopping, he looked very emotional in that moment and players know their bodies better than anyone. And you know, he was in tears that looked like. So I'm with you. I think it's hopeful thinking, but we can't say for sure. Big blow. I mean, there are only 7 out only. You know, when a team gets, there was a huge win by the Yankees last night, because when a team gets to 6 buster, that 6 is my number. You're in the race at 6, you're out at 7. So right now there are only 7 out. That's a big blow, these injuries, Verlander, as we get to September, it's a little scary. Now, if it was two weeks from now, it would be really scary. You have time to come back and get ready mclennan mclennan does, but I still worry that this is longer than just one turn through the rotation thing. What we have to wait and see though. All right, you jump the information on Verlander. I was getting tee up with that. Sorry, sorry. All right, that was done on berland's cap reveal. According to the Astros, fascial disruption, but no muscle fiber disruption the team said. And when I read that, look, you know, my daughter's 22, my son is 18. I've heard a lot of explanations. And I always felt like the more detail they give you sometimes, maybe they're trying. You know, the high big news, I'm with you. Whatever they told me, my feeling was, it's early September. It's going to be on Thursday and he's not going to be pitching and with the playoffs looming. That potentially is a huge deal. Yeah, I was interested when the teams that traded starting pitchers, and I know Jake got a reason a Cy Young candidate, but he pitched great Sunday Night. The Yankees trade Jordan Montgomery, both now, these teams have had injuries. It's scary when you try to start it out. Houston has plenty of starting pitching behind Berliner, but it changes the dynamic in a big way if he's not your ace, and you've got to move up whoever framed valdes or javi or whatever. But yeah, I think you'll be back, but it's like, will he be a sharp if he only gets one start or two starts at most? I think he'll be back, though. Boy, you'd have to just tear the tear him off the mountain, the Jersey off him to get him not to pitch in October this year. He has had a hell of a year, but again, wait and see approach, little nervous though, it's September and two guys, mclennan and

"At the braves, right? If strider, Morton, if these guys are pitching the way they're capable of pitching, max freed, I like Atlantis pitching lined up against the Dodgers. I just think the Dodgers are a teacher. Which is trying to play out how the mets are going to fit into this. Because there's lots of great teams. But I don't like it. I don't like the braves, but if I told you, hey, look, if I told you right, Dodgers may have the best record in baseball. But the mets have the hottest record in baseball. That song narcos by the blaster jacks. That is hot, bro, that's a hot record, bro. Yo, Joel, if you could hit me up with that. Oh, you know what? That's a great way to get everybody fired up midweek. It's called narco or narcos. Narcos, blasters. By blaster Jackson, it's the Edwin Diaz entrance song. It's the hottest record in baseball. And can you believe of all people bond had the huevos to say that the side story? His entrance when he played for Boston was better than mo Rivera until that nose picker to beat it. Or Edwin Diaz? Yeah, get out of here. So letting those picker pebble bump and beat it as he's not even in the conversation. I'll back you up on that. Sorry, New England fans. Sorry, Dodgers fans. I'll back up even the braves. If you told me max freed, if you told me, Morton, after watching him pitch last night, and even stridor, the young kid, I really think that there's something there more than that what seems to be unbeatable Dodgers pitching that I just can't feel in a big game if I was like, yo, kavina. Who you love in? Consulate? Do you want me to just tell you that there's no duo like Scherzer and the ground? There really isn't. I'm not like your girlfriend. The wife wanting you to just tell me what I want to hear. You do want to hear that. And it's true. But I can't match anyone up to those two guys. They're that good. While the Dodgers have 80 wins, and they can very well stroll all the way to the World Series and win it. And I would not be surprised. I would not be surprised. And the hottest record in baseball, which is blaster jacks. Narco. Yeah, trumpets are in right now. Now, you know what, I'm thinking about putting down my guitar picking up the trumpet again. 5th grade. If I told you though, hey, we're looking at a divisional round. And it's max freed. Morton and stridor versus Gosselin Anderson, and we don't even know what Kershaw's status is going to be. And he hasn't always been lights out in the playoffs. No matter how good their record is, your Ricky, your Dodgers guy or what. Yeah. You can tell me I'm wrong. The or do you feel that confident in those pictures? I'm more scared of the Met staff when we meet NLCS. That's all he wants to hear, Ricky, thanks. That's all rich is like a compliment fishing right now. Yeah. Maybe don't forget, we're getting Dustin maybach. That is true. Oh, crank that crank the blaster jacks. Yeah, this is the hottest record in baseball. By far, forget about what the Dodgers are. Up to right now. The hottest record in baseball is definitely the entrance song. For Edwin Diaz, the crowd's going nuts. And it almost feels dirty that Contreras on the braves. Uses this. This is powerful. As we walk up swan. Does he really? I didn't even know that. Disrespect. Disrespect. Trumpets are playing. Did you meet over the trumpets? Yeah. I dare you. You guys shoot, man. I'll tell you why, this is a very powerful way to start your Wednesday. I think everybody should go to work while playing this song. Well, if you look on TikTok, I'm gonna do it today. I'll post it at COVID on red. Don't over promise. No, I did my wife recorded a lesson. I just haven't posted it. It's called the just lied to everybody. I'm not going to do it today. You already did it. But I may do it again, because my wife had a better idea. The Edwin Diaz challenge is you either it's like you go into work or they'll go and do some chores around the house, some guys have done videos of them going to cook on the grill, but you slowly jog out to what you're doing to the Edwin Diaz theme song. All right, well, sweep in the nation right now because the pitching is that good. I wouldn't worry about a thing if I were you. Rich again, the mets fan, but the Dodgers, they lost, but they're playing around Joey Gallo as we discussed. The braves look good man, the braves of they just want two in a row against the mets. So today you got to say, is this where Max Scherzer stops the bleeding today? Is that why you have an ace like him when you lose a couple in a row versus a rival, you throw max on the mountain. Again, are you just fishing for me to tell you what you already know? Yes. Max Scherzer. He's an amazing pitcher. He's going to stop the bleeding. Thanks, buddy. He's the best. All right. Are you a fan of his blue eyes brown eye? Much bigger fan of his brown eye. Sure about that? All right. I can't give enough of his brown eye. Yeah. It's distracting to me. He must have had some allergies because I saw him scratching his brown eye. I heard Keith Hernandez say that. I know. I wonder if he knows what he's saying. All right, so here, I wanted to ask you a question. Phone guy? Rodolfo Castro. Sliding into third, head first, sliding head, was he signing head first into someone's DMs or into third base. And the third base. Yes. Is the answer. Castro, 23 year old rookie, and what a rookie move. Received a one game suspension, which he's appealing for violating the league's policy against bringing unapproved electronics to the field. They can't bring a Game Boy or what else came from your Game Boy? It's cool in the dugout. Can you bring it? You can't bring it to the deck either. No, you can't bring your phone anywhere. That's why the backstory is this, though. The oven mitts that I don't know, I think they're called oven mitts. The oven mitts that people wear on the base paths, the story goes, hey, look, guys, I met no disrespect. I just want MLB to know. According to rodolfo Castro, that I thought I'd put the oven Mitt I was making brownies before the game. And I put the oven Mitt in my back pocket, totally forgetting that I had the cell phone there. So that's his reasoning. I believe Fernando tatis more, and I'll tell you why. Okay, okay. Because Roald Dahl is a young dude who I know where my phone is 24/7. My phone's one foot away from me in front of me. And I'm always protecting mine too. These guys, you know why though? I'm not trying to hide anything. I'm just protecting my details, precious recipes. Oh, is that what you tell it on your phone? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm not trying to hide anything. I'm not shady. Let me see your phone. No. No, no, no. Hiding grandma's recipes. Protecting my grandma's precious. By the way, yeah, that's a note to every dude that doesn't want someone looking at their phone. Just say you're hiding grandma's recipes. They're not giving away my Tito's refried beans recipe. She's the best taquitos in the game. Yeah, I'm not giving away hair secrets. It seemed to me that he knew something he was in some kind of trouble when he tried to hand it to him. It was like, yeah. All right, buddy. Phone comes flying out. That was embarrassing, because we weren't used to seeing that. I don't think we've ever seen it before. I saw it. If you zoom in, but it's open to bumble to do with swiping. He was on Tinder. We know what's going on here. He's doing scroll, man. He was scrolling up butt cheeks, probably mid inning. You can't do that during the game. I'll be honest.

"Yeah, maybe that's the reason. I think this weekend, well, I know this weekend, we've got the Yankees and the Red Sox. So I'm going to talk to Aaron Boone and Alex core about why that's gone away because I did ask Aaron Boone last month about the idea that people are pitching to to judge and of course, but he's not going to throw gasoline on that. He wants to keep that conversation down and I'll tell you Tim is. He gave me a little grin. You know, like he knows, people are pitching to judge and we don't get it. He's on a pace now. It's 63 home runs this year. And the conversation about whether or not he should be MVP is going to continue to verbal as we go down the stretch as he continues to chase 60 homers and know how you feel. I think there's a parallel conversation about Edwin Diaz and the Cy Young award and whether or not he should win because last year we saw the precedent that with Shohei Ohtani being such a successful two way player, voters voted for ohtani over Vlad junior and in the last 20 years, really sincere gagne, voters, I think have followed the use of analytics in the sport and believing that volume is so important in determining the sayang award, Zach ranke had as good a season as we've ever seen from any relief pitcher in 2016. Tim, he didn't come close to winning this a young award that year. So what do you think about Edwin Diaz for psi? Do you still think Aaron judge is the MVP in the American League? Aaron judge is still the MVP and I'm going to disagree with you buster Shohei Ohtani is not going to catch him this year. He's great. He still remarkable, but he's not going to win. Aaron judge is going to be the best player on the best team. He's going to have a historic season, and I think he's going to win the MVP. And I think he should win the MVP. As for Edwin Diaz, sorry, this guy has been unbelievable. He's striking out 50% of the guys he faces. He's striking out 18 guys per 9 innings. It's absurd. When he comes out in the game is over, that stuff is so ridiculously good right now. And the energy he brings. Buster, have we ever seen a recovery within a couple seasons fan that that guy has made from his first year in New York when he had some troubles now he is, he's a God there when he comes into the games. It is so cool. However, sandy Alcantara is still the Cy Young winner in the national league. Period. And it's because of the volume that you're talking about. There's no other way around this. If a guy throws 250 innings, which contra might get to, and another guy throws 60 innings. I'm sorry, that's the discussion. But you and I disagree on this. You have Mariano Rivera's the second best Yankee ever, a third best Yankee ever. And I love him. He's the greatest closer ever. But you can't place him above a center field or who plays every day. And I don't think you can take a reliever and put him above a starting pitcher who is having a spectacular season and it's going to throw at least a 150 to 200 innings more than a reliever. That's the way I look. Yeah, I would have had Britney sighing award winner in 2016. He was just ridiculous that year for the Orioles. Diaz is ridiculous this year in his last 18 appearances, 63 batter space, 38 truck strikeouts. Let me repeat that. 38 strikeouts among the last 63 batters faced and in that time he's allowed one walk and 7 hits, opponents have net in that stretch of 18 appearances in OPS of two 58 and you're right about the energy level that he brings when he comes into the game. The fans are totally into the trumpet's plan, you know, I know I covered the Yankees, Mariano Rivera, when they were playing Andrew Sandman for him, hell's bells for Trevor Hoffman. I think in terms of the pure energy that the music, the player bring into the mound in the 9th inning, we haven't seen it before. What do you think? Yeah. And he could easily finish second in the Cy Young voting and get a ton of MVP votes. I mean, he could finish 6th in the MVP voting because of what he means now to the mets. They feel like that game is over when they bring him in. And buck brought him in in the 8th inning the other day and the game was over. So it's been a spectacular season. I love it when he comes in the game and I'll say it one more time buster. How does anyone get it off of that stuff? Anybody. It's ridiculous. All right, what do we make of the Padres? Who won the first game with the revamped lineup with Juan Soto with Brandon drury and they basically haven't been able to win since and they're not scoring runs. What do we make of it? It's confusing. They lost four straight games by four or more runs, which is pretty hard to do if you think about it. They've been shut out now back to back games for the first time since 2017. I am not going to panic about this if I'm a padre fan, even though I can tell you there's widespread panic going on already. They're going to get to teach junior back. They're going to have a really good offensive team. They can really pitch, including out of the bullpen and they're going to make the playoffs. However, the braves are better than the Padres are. The mets are much better than the Padres are right now. And the Dodgers are way better than the Padres are right now. So the moves they made, I thought, were great and necessary because the Dodgers are going to be great for years to come. The only way the Padres could compete with them was to do something dramatic. And they did more than one dramatic thing. So don't tell me they made a mistake here. This is baseball. This is not like acquiring Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. They touch the ball on every possession. It takes time for baseball players to get going. I promise you, at some point in the next two months, we're going to go, wow, that padre offense is just as good as we thought it would be. It just hasn't happened yet. That's the beauty of baseball. So for the record, Tim declared that they're going to make the playoffs. I just want to point out this kind of reminds me of when I declared the national league east race over. When the mets had a ten and a half game lead and then the braves cut it to a half game. Like you get your ebbs and flows at the moment, the Padres are sitting 6 in the national league standings, they are a, let's see here what a game ahead of the brewers at this point. So they're kind of clinging to it, but you're confident that they're going to get in. Yeah, and this is the same guy who has pointed out last year the potteries had the best record of baseball after 50 games and not only didn't make the playoffs. They didn't even finish above 500. I'm telling you, though, the difference is Juan Soto, Josh bell, Josh hader and made more than anything. Bob Melvin's in charge of that team. Do you really think that bob Melvin is going to allow a team with that kind of talent to fold down the stretch like they did last year? I'm not buying it. Sorry. All right. There is one massive wild card. I didn't think you'll agree with me on this. A major X Factor. And that is Fernández junior when he comes back. Through the years, when hitters come back from wrist injuries, you don't get consistent results. You just never know until they actually get into games. Correct? Correct. And you're right, buster. And again, I'm going back on what I said, 5 seconds ago, but if he's not, if he's not right when he comes back, then everything changes again.

"edwin diaz" Discussed on Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney

"And sometimes I'm totally with it. Yeah, and what did George Brad hit that year? He had three 90. He was killing everything, right? Right. And that's the way it is with Aaron judge now and look, Anthony Rizzo has been terrific this year. He's been out in recent days because of a back issue. It's possible he's going to play later today. Anthony Rizzo's been terrific this year, batting behind judge in recent days, Matt Carpenter is filled in and before he got hurt last night. You know, he's been terrific. None of them are doing what Aaron judge is doing and especially with two outs. I'm not pitching the guy. That's what, and look, bob Melvin, the Padres manager who made that choice to not pitch around Freddie Freeman the other day. He knows, you know, ten times more baseball than I even sniffed, but I'd love to have a conversation with the next time I see him because I feel like that decision and the sport wide decision not to issue intentional walks is based on a big, on a larger sample size and the general premise that you don't want to put runners on base because the more likely that you put when you put runners on base, the more likely it is you're going to give up. But in that situation like with Freddie Freeman the other day, there are two outs, if you're the Padres at that point, I think they were down four zero. You're just trying to keep the Dodgers from scoring again, I'd rather pitch to Will Smith as good as he is, then Freddie Freeman. Yeah, and but on the flip side buster, you know, roger barrison 61 did not get intentionally walked during a 61 home run season. So he was the MVP in 60. He was the MVP in 61 and got no intentional walks. They're granted. That was one of the great offensive teams of all time and that was Mickey Mantle in the order with him, not to mention surrounded by hitters. But the intentional walk has always really interested me. And one reason it's way, way down, I would guess this year is that pitchers aren't batting anywhere anymore. So there's no reason to intentionally walk the 8th hitter to get to the pitcher. So maybe that's why things are going down even more. Yeah, maybe that's the reason. I think this weekend, well, I know this weekend, we've got the Yankees and the Red Sox. So I'm going to talk to Aaron Bowen and Alex core about why that's gone away because I did ask Aaron Boone last month about the idea that people are pitching to judge and of course, but he's not going to throw gasoline on that. He wants to keep that conversation down and I'll tell you Tim is, he gave me a little grin. He knows people are pitching to judge and we don't get it. He's on a pace now. It's 63 home runs this year. And the conversation about whether or not he should be MVP is going to continue to burble as we go down the stretch. As he continues to chase 60 homers and know how you feel, I think there's a parallel conversation about Edwin Diaz and the Cy Young award and whether or not he should win because last year we saw the precedent that with Shohei Ohtani being such a successful two way player, voters voted for ohtani over Vlad junior and in the last 20 years, really since Eric gagne, voters, I think have followed the use of analytics in the sport and believing that volume is so important in determining the Cy Young award. Zach ranke had as good a season as we've ever seen from any relief pitcher in 2016, Tim, he didn't come close to winning this a young award that year. Buster, have we ever seen a recovery within a couple seasons fan that that guy has made from his first year in New York when he had some troubles. Now he is, he's a God there when he comes into the games. Yeah, I would have had Britney's deciding award winner in 2016. He was just ridiculous that year for the Orioles, Diaz is ridiculous this year in his last 18 appearances, 63 batters faced 38 struck at strikeouts. Let me repeat that. 38 strikeouts among the last 63 batters faced and in that time he's allowed one walk and 7 hits, opponents have in that in that stretch of 18 appearances in OPS of two 58 and you're right about the energy level that he brings when he comes into the game. The fans are totally into the trumpet's plan, you know, I know I covered the Yankees, Mariano Rivera, when they were playing Andrew Sandman for him, hell's bells for Trevor Hoffman. I think in
