First of all will point out to everybody listening that it was a relatively slow two weeks. We did not flip as many articles in because there weren't as many articles that we thought were directly relevant to us as instructional designers and educational technologists. So we had been assay. We had somewhere around thirty articles that we flipped in but normally we flip in more so taking those articles here the for trends we saw hardware and software was by far the most Articles that we flipped and this is not unusual for all right right right. We saw numerous articles that collected the best online tools for teaching in various settings with and they were good. I mean we. We saw a lot of good recommendations for some interesting tools and we saw i. I don't know why fonts get me so excited. We saw new fonts for google. Docs right announced. We've we've hoped for this for a long way and it's been like the last. I believe last three or four episodes at this has been a trend. So we're we're happy to see this. Yes we saw well. We saw study reported in the journal of neuroscience suggests the importance of face to face interactions which is important information for all of us who design instruction the power of storytelling of really good article from a We saw an article in forbes on the next frontier in. Id now this one. I to say this is worth reading. But it's more like a challenge. Like i when when i was telling you before that read it i wasn't. I wasn't sure that i agreed with the author entirely right But but i'm not sure i disagree. I think it's a good discussion starter. Are recommended read in this area. Though is three dimensions of personalized learning by paul mc france for edutopia and this is a i i pulled. Well it's it's they. Call it a pull quote because it's actually like a sub quote so i pulled oppo quote to share. I thought well you and i agree. This article was Was a good one in terms of really placing personalized learning context. It's not just about tailoring to an individual the the learning sequence. It's well to to pull the quote. Here's the quote. Personalization is worthwhile. But it shouldn't mean students working only on their own. They need to collaborate on learning. And this was a really interesting point and really well written. Think this is if you only have one or two articles that you can read this week..

"In the upcoming two weeks abbey start us off by talking about are four trends and sharing are recommended readings. Thank you tim. Yes well as always. We've looked at all the articles that we flipped into our flipboard magazine over the past two weeks and the articles are it's not a very scientific approach because they're basically articles that are of interest to us. We think that they will be of interest to others in our field and what we discovered as always. We came up with four trending topics number. One is a common topic for. it's not. It's not a shock but it was a big one this past two weeks because there was a lot of reveals and announcements hardware and software amazon announced its new line of fire tablets for older kids which is an interesting a new product that they're putting out because as most people know the fire tablets for the kids are kid friendly but they're also sort of kid designed so that they look very very attractive too much younger kids. These are for older children who are There are a little sleeker designed their little more sophisticated looking there little less bumper car bumper. Every i think you may quote i love was gonna say you're going to see that headline somewhere. Don't most kids tablets. There may to sort of you know bumper at for good reason now There is also the the announcement of the new galaxy book pro and galaxy book pro three sixty which were well reviewed Increased popularity in cloud services at universities. This should really come as a surprise to anyone but it is important to note that the number of universities that are making the switch to cloud services there are news zoom features Some of which are really fun. There's one where you can put everybody participating in the meeting in the same backdrop which it's again just something interesting and fun to promote a group Sally it's there's a new google design and the big one from the past. Two weeks was apple's product announcements at introduced its product line for the upcoming year and so we saw a lot of apple related news and i think we flipped three different stories. That were just related to the apple. Release last year. However our recommended reading in this area is this powerful lesser known tech tools for teachers by michelle eden for edutopia. This is a interesting article. Tim you and i were talking about this before. We started recording that we weren't familiar with many of the products that were being listed by By michelle eden and again. I apologize if i'm mispronouncing anybody's name Any of our authors names but these were a really interesting list of lesser known tools. Just exactly what she says back but they they make some great ideas for adding to wants toolkit. Our second trend of the past two weeks is remote teaching and learning with emphasis on pandemic related. That's so that it pretty much..

"You'll get not only one great chorus, but early access to the second half of the United States. History US history after eighteen seven seven. So the article that I wanNA. Share with you. Today is entitled. The biggest hurdle to flipping your classroom it from Edutopia which is part of the George. Lucas -CATIONAL foundation, and it's written by a educator named John Bergman and he posted many years ago. Actually it's not a new article because flipping the classroom is not a new approach to education. So. The article begins by explaining that you know he. This teacher John Bergman was coming out of a tradition of teaching that was very traditional as he says I spent nineteen years as a lecture. Slash discussion teacher. I knew how to teach that way in fact, I reached a point. Where if you told me the topic of the day I could flip a switch and start teaching that topic without any notes in in two thousand seven, he came up with the idea which is known as the flipped classroom not him, but him and a teacher be by the Errand Sam's. But he didn't want to necessarily change what he's talking about is that. He said he didn't want to give up on his lecture time. He thought he was good lecture as I'm sure. Many of us think we are good lecturers teachers, I think maybe fall into the trap of falling in love with their own voice and I have to say it sometimes I can be accused rightly of doing that as well. His said he goes on to say. My class was well structured, and I liked being in control of all. That was happening, so when I flip the class I had to surrender control of the learning to the students. Not. Take a moment this part that right. He had to surrender control of the learning to the students. Isn't that really what it's all about? Student learning. I can't make my students learn. I can only provide for them the guidance, the support, the tools, the structures, and the encouragement for them to learn. And I with the flipped classroom model does is it allows us a structure form a environment where students own their own learning. And no more so than what we've just gone through, I think proves that we have to be able to do that right when the are teaching at a distance learning environment like we did in the latter half of this year. We have to realize that you know the the students have to want to do this. With the idea, being that we could fall back into a distance learning environment because of Covid, nineteen and future shutdowns, the flipped classroom model allows us to establish. First and foremost expectations of that students have to own their own learning and the classroom model also establishes US structure upon which that student owned learning can take place. The article goes on, he says. I should provide some context. We started flipping our classes after a conversation with our assistant superintendent. She saw how we were recording. Live lectures with screen casting software and told us how her daughter loved it when her professor at a local university recorded his lectures because she didn't have to go to class anymore, so when we asked the question when what is the point of class time if we make it so that we can get all the content by watching a video. And then the obvious answer was that we could make class time more, enriching and valuable. And there it is right. If your. Time is all about delivering information to students. There's very little time left over for the processing and mastery of that information. And with the flipped classroom model does is it allows us to carve out more space in time in our classroom time for that engagement, net mastery, and that personal growth to go on so that as an educator when I do the flat flipped classroom model I'm not worried so much about telling them the names, the dates and the places of history I'm more concerned with whether they're able to read to write it to explain it. Analyze it and to show it to show me that they know it. That's what happens with the flipped classroom model. Because that's why they're, they can get this information from a whole bunch of sources and they probably told you. Can we watch the movie right if a student if students are asking to watch movies in your class, it's because they prefer to receive that information from Hollywood rather than from from me right so the article goes on. Says I had one student who, during the first semester was not really taking class seriously, she struggled to learn in our flipped mastery model, because it required actually learn the content. She wanted to just get by instead of engaging content. I insisted she learned the material. Before she moved on sometime in January, I noticed a change in her. She was learning in fact she was learning how to learn. Now that's an important change here that I think we can all celebrate. Right rather than just try to get that grade or to try to just kind of go through and slip through the cracks fly under the radar. You're actually going to require students to learn and to learn how they learn how they learn best, and you're gonNA. Be The educator the guide to show them how to understand themselves, and that's where the real value comes. Nobody really needs me to tell them about the war of twelve. Nobody really needs to explained monetary policy from the nineteenth century, but what what young people do need is they need a qualified professional educator to show them how learning occurs for them and to guide them. Push them and encourage them to grow into that way that way of learning. and it's that warm demand or that it's that insistence that they grow over time through struggle that the flipped classroom model allows right the growth mindset as carol dwt laid out in her book of the same name. The growth mindset is really where the flipped classroom model can have a profound impact on student learning. Amounted to take away from our discussion. Just tell you a little bit about a product that I use that helps me to make this show this. Flog this blog this podcast possible. I like it so much. I wanted to take some time to recommend to you. It's called Blueberry Dot. com stolen spelled a little differently. It's B. L. U. D. R. R. Y. DOT COM..

Let's talk a little more about what's happening in Hong Kong what's APP twitter and telegram have all stopped processing Hong Kong law enforcement requests for user data so a Hong Kong law enforcement agency asks what's APP twitter and telegram for user data those companies you're saying, hold off. We're not processing request right now. They're not denying the request. They're just not processing them at the moment. This is because mainland. China imposed a national security law in Hong Kong that went into effect, July first, removing the requirement of a court order to request user data so the Security Agency can just request the data without having to go to court, and that security agency is now set up under Chinese mainland jurisdiction not under local Hong. Kong control. What's. APP said it paused Processing Processing to review the impact of the new law and consult with human rights experts, telegram said it would not process requests quote until an international consensus is reached in relation to the ongoing political changes in the city and twitter said it is reviewing the implications of the law as some of the terms of the law are vague, and without clear definition in the words of twitter. So this of course relates to that that new Hong Kong Security Law There are other. podcasts out there that can go deep and explain what that law is, but essentially it's mainland. China saying. We are now for security purposes, terrorism colluding with foreign agents Fostering secession, we are going to impose a law that is controlled from China which many see as a violation of the two countries, one system agreement that was put in place when Britain handed over Hong Kong to Chinese administration back in the nineties now far as technology goes, that means these companies now have to make a decision of whether this changes conditions in Hong Kong enough for them to be comfortable to operate. Remember you don't have twitter and what's up in mainland? China for many reasons, but they just don't operate there. They can operate in Hong Kong, though because there were these two different systems. Sarah is this. You know. Where do you think this is going? I'm curious. Man Well. The the Hong Kong situation, and again I'm I'm very much. An outlier and I know a lot of people more. Especially from the front lines of of what's going on here on a variety of levels, yeah I. Think Companies Need to make a choice I mean is the user base in this region worth fighting for, or does it make sense for the company to say you know what this is getting too messy and we can't change things based on the regional laws on this level, and and pull and pull out of of Hong Kong I'm curious. If you have thoughts on this, especially given that you know what's up is limited in what can hand over anyway because attendance secured, but they could certainly be handed over Meta

"To helping teachers better understand teach social and emotional learning he's been featured on CNN had Edutopia Huffington post and cold pedagogy but now he's on brainwave so without further ado here he is this. Why did you write this book now. Stemmed from my immense burnout leading me to the point of quitting teaching I am <unk> written about a lot that I win in education super passionate head with full of energy and than just got to a point where I was I would say two feet out the door like I was interviewing for jobs about to leave the classroom entirely in had that wakeup call of why why did he get to this point and what had gone wrong and the irony of my situation is that I also was teaching positive psychology program that I had developed for the last few years serious cut his strange being a moment of teaching adolescents and teenagers <unk> thrive how to find gratitude hats persevere in difficult moments than here. I am about to leave the classroom so <hes> <unk> double down decided that I was GonNa put to practice everything that that I preached and everything that I had researched for the last decade and see what the results would be ans- because it helps me so much it was that moment of like okay it could probably share some of this beyond more than just my classroom because I'm sure if I'm feeling burned out than there are many others and I'm sure if these things helped me than they could also help many others in looking into that I think a lot of us assume that our wellbeing really hinges on our circumstances and so if we gotta just teach a Yoga overclass would be a lot happier in your book in in your research you found that our wellbeing isn't necessarily always tied just with our circumstances could use be yeah. It's kind of a it's a tricky topic when talking about circumstances on because on one level. I don't think there's a teacher out there or even a person out there that doesn't feel as though our circumstances can influence our wellbeing you know I think of something like having really challenging students can affect our wellbeing in having having very large class sizes can affect our wellbeing so I always like to say that it's not either or either our circumstances or within ourselves. It's Kinda eh both and but with the research that I've done in in looking into the many studies in well-being there is quite a lot of data out there that circumstances this is might not way as much as we think I'm so one of the main set of researchers eyesight Keenan Sheldon and Sonya Lubomirski their sustainable happiness model and they did a Meta ed analysis of hundreds of different studies on wellbeing in their report found that circumstances only count for about ten percent of the variants insofar happiness on so does impact us but forty percent of the variance comes from our intentional actions. What behaviors are what we decide to spend our energy on and that was one of the first like keystones when I was wanting to double down re-commits education of just recognizing that the circumstances matter but my actions matter or more and that's my energy in how I dedicate my resources is going to do more for my wellbeing than simply jumping ship to a whole `nother occupation or or you know just getting a new strand of students that if I don't figure these things out internally I just gonNa keep facing the same challenges again and again. You're so right on that. The is common sense that it's circumstances like I'm happy because of this but if you look at society today and just what we have today we have better circumstances in history at were anxious more anxious. More depressed have higher suicide than ever before so you're still with our happiness. Our well-being cannot be tied to are circumstances alone so then really what are the big shifts that you propose for teachers to help us thrived since we can't rely on our circumstances along so internal locus of.
