"AP sports I'm David Shuster this year's first major golf tournament is turning into one long day after another and our gram agar's updates us on the masters. The weather has been the big winner for the second consecutive day at the masters with persistent brain forcing the cancellation of the third round after the leaders have played just 6 holes with water pulling on the fairways and greens. Players were caught in and now face a marathon final day to wrap up the tournament when play was stopped, Brooks Koepka was at 13 under for clear of the Spaniard John ram and 7 ahead of the U.S. amateur champion Sam Bennett. Turning to baseball, the mets got a home run from Pete Alonso beating Miami 5 to two in Alonzo loves this mets lineup. I think it's extremely difficult because not just one guy can do the job so it's one through 9. We grind pictures down and it's we make it we make their job as tough as possible. Other national league winners, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Arizona and Washington over in the American League, Tampa Bay now ain't no after downing Oakland 11 nothing while Rafael Devers had two home runs in 5 RBIs, Boston clobbering Detroit 14 5, Minnesota Seattle and the Yankees winning their games, turning to hockey, Dallas edge Detroit two to one with winning goaltender Jay gottinger saying this was a quality victory. It seems that our seasons are pretty much over and those games are hard too, but team as good as Vegas. They're at the top of the box for a reason so I'll move on to the show we can play with them and beat them and it's just a tight fun task. Today in History: January 24

"Time now for today in history, January 24. Two dozen. Here's time. This is kind of interesting. In 19 22, Columbus sailed the ocean blue over a hundred years ago. A guy from Iowa named Christian K Nelson invented something. Anybody remember what mister Nelson invented? The paper clip. No. The accu Jack. Nope. He invented the Eskimo pie. Oh. I don't think that should count. Food being invented shouldn't count. No, he created. No, the Eskimo pie. This is chocolate sauce frozen on ice cream. What year was that? 1922. Right? So I think Asia is taking exception with it. Don't eskimos get all mad now when you see this. So I Googled this and I found out that the Eskimo pies name has been canceled. The famous chocolate covered ice cream bar is getting a new name. It is now known as the edes pie. Edy apostrophe has edes pie. You know, one of the most successful teams in the CFL, Canadian football league, used to be the Edmonton eskimos. What do they know? They're now the elks. Edmonton elks, that's pretty cool. Edmonton elks. Okay. So yeah, that name is apparently not especially well liked and you have a tribute pad? Sure, sure. Bye bye to the Eskimo pie. I hear the names and sensitive, but I'm not sure why. They took away my ice cream back in July. Klondike klondike bar I'll give you a try. To pronounce it properly next time.

"Blackhawks Edmonton is now 58 16 and four when both Connor McDavid and Leon draisaitl each score in the same game. I'm Joe brand. You're listening to the Blackhawks postgame show taking you up to midnight tonight. After the hawks losing skid now unfortunately stretches out to 8 games, but this was a different type of game tonight. Blackhawks taking on a very good, very talented, very fast Edmonton team. And they get within a goal of them for the second straight night. Not only that, there were a few opportunities for Edmonton to just let this game go away and just kind of put it to bed, but the Blackhawks didn't allow that to happen and nearly tied it up with 13.6 seconds left. Let's get to the highlights of tonight's matchup at the united center after 20 minutes. We had no score, the oilers outshot the Blackhawks 14 to 6, we thought we had a goal. It looked like Zach Hyman had netted the first goal of the night. However, the Blackhawks challenged it saying that Hyman had cross checked Seth Jones into the Blackhawks goaltender of arvid soder bloom. That challenge went rather was overturned successfully, good challenge by the hawks in a remain to scoreless game Edmonton at a lot of good scoring chances they had a power play in that first period. They had 7 shots on goal in their very first power play. It is just a very talented team overall, let alone with a man advantage. So we moved into the second period and Edmonton didn't waste too much time. 54 seconds in Leon draisaitl picked up his 14th goal of the season. Darnell nurse with the primary assist, his tenth of the year in nurse also playing in his 500th career game. Later on in that second period, Ryan nugent Hopkins would take a stellar feed from yes he pull you Yahoo, pull jarvie, excuse me. Behind arvid solar bloom's net and just fed nugent Hopkins who came cruising in from the right wing and made it the two zero lead for Edmonton. So a moment right there in the oilers continued to pile on the pressure offensively. But the black clocks had an answer for that and it was thanks to a shot from Jack Johnson, although it didn't end up being his goal. Hyman will clear to the line, kept

"That's the world we're living in now. Okay, so I've been on this quest for the last 15 years how to get people's attention. And I want to tell you what I officially come to just came to me last month. You know the only time where you can really get people to pay attention to you without looking at their phone is one, either you have them in a bathroom setting or something where everybody but they're all looking at their phones in there. But the easiest way to do it is get people into a theater. Turn down all the lights, put a spotlight on the stage and say, look at me for the next two hours. So I wrote a one man show. It's called all the things to say, the dad shoe diaries, and I'm gonna perform that next year. Go around the country performing it, because think about it. If the lights are dim, you're not gonna pull your thought off 'cause the screen will glow and everyone will look around you and say, oh my God, he's checking his phone, right? It's the last place on earth. You could get full attention from people. Are you gonna come up to Edmonton? I would love to because I'm a big fisherman and I hear this. Well, let me tell you, we hold the world's second biggest fringe here. And you should be on stage of that because you would be a great performer for that. Get in touch with the fringe Edmonton and say you want to be there. They'll make it happen. Okay. Thank you very much. Yeah, so that's where I've come full circle. How do you get people's attention, guess what? There's no way to do it anymore except create something that they are so into that they have to bid. They want a pay attention, or just turn off all the lights and force them to steer you. That's where we're at as a society..

Joseph on instagram ask. Who will be the next canadian team to win the stanley cup And that's our yeah. That's a hard one. I'm going to say edmonton total. Totally recency bias. Yeah five and what are the gate pretty hard to get by mcdavid and dry seidel and not give them serious consideration. If their goal tending holds up to the deadline and they'd ken hall and his accrued some some space. I think they can really make significant move can help their chances but i would them ahead of an couvert. There ahead of calgary. Uh-huh i think would have paid can be really good. I mean they're their amass right now. They don't through cova de mia. You know they're just trying to get their get their way. They're montreal looks like they're spinning their wheels. Toronto got some work to do. Ottawa's away a ways away i i would say edmonton merv bergen ass. What would happen if jack eichel replacement surgery on his own and it's not that simple and what would happen just to simplify it would be well. Buffalo doesn't endorse it. Then they suspend him and he doesn't get his ten mil for this year. And the question of the contract with fifty million slightly under fifty million owing than can be scrutinized right so it wouldn't happen but theoretically what would happen. You'd think if i got that disc replacement i mean. I guess that gets buffalo out from under the contract on one sense because you would somewhere in there. There's in there. I mean the collective bargaining agreement. You can't just go get your own procedure done. No right you. There has to be a sign off. So i guess i give them a mechanism to probably void the contract. But if you're buffalo you don't wanna avoid the contract you want some assets right. You so won't happen but it's actually merged a hell of a question it is. Who told you this. Ruth and probably one that jack has asked himself about a thousand times at this point because clearly if he was willing to opt for the fusion surgery he would have had that weeks not months ago probably be closing in on return to league..

"Co you must be nineteen and remember stay cool and always play responsibly so we literally can talk about whatever we want and lock. The nfl is big right now. I lost her survival pool a couple of weeks ago. Pick tennessee Wasn't such a good pick. So now i have limited interest in the the Survivor pools. But i am dialing in more to the super bowl odds. I don't think anybody is shocked by the tampa. Bay buccaneers plus five hundred. The buffalo bills buffalo was a little shaky early on in the regular season. Those really good aren't they. They look to be really good. We'll see anyone in that group that catches your eye like the green bay packers and plus eleven hundred. I feel like marley. Green bay should be a little bit better odds than little higher. I think they're a better team. Anyone catch your eye well. I didn't know the rams were as good as they are. And so. so there's there that's who i'm going to say you know like arizona's off to this amazing start but i don't know i just like the rams i i think there's a better chance detroit doesn't win a game. How long have they saw long time. Like the lions terrible since forever. Yeah usually get hammered. Every time he admitted your browns fan right. And now i mean it's it's fashionable be browns fan. I i like the look. I'm a bit surprised the kansas city. She's not a bit a lot surprised ebbing. They struggled pretty early in the regular season. I thought they'd find their way and they just don't seem to be finding their way. But have you seen the odds speaking of the detroit. Lions to go winless who the regular season like. Do you think there's a chance they go. Winless of there is a chance. But how good of a chance do you think you gotta think they're gonna win somewhere. No right yeah. I think so but the odds right now according to kubeck dot. Co and and you can put money on this. They will go winless plus nine hundred minus three three three three that they do not go. When in the case of drags my one of my favorite movies boulder. Yeah and you remember the scene where the manager gets them in the shower. And he's yelling adam and he turns around to his coach and he says coach losses. How many losses. We got goes. We got a lot of losses. Say so that's what i think of what i think of the lions masses. Well you can check it all out online.

"Yeah all the prime. I think when you're playing you don't look too far had when i was in college. It was just you know that's helped my team university win. Let's try to develop as a player every year and summertime kind of evaluate your season and evaluate where you are and then i think my senior college is a really big year for me personally to kind of turn into a real prospector. Have a real chance at playing. After my senior year i got traded to tronto and i was part of this young group of fires and i thought that i had a really unique opportunity to kind of grow and be a part of a young group and and be associated with those guys and and i think that's kind of where where that started and when you get my first year in bed with austin and willie and i think that one of those things i bab sets merely be yourself you know. Don't try to be somebody that you're not just work within your game and for me as acquired to hear that from your coach support to just go there and play your game and and it'll be effective. That really helped me early on my career. And then as my career develop again water confidence in myself and my abilities and and being able to play with ryan players and be able to being able to develop and nick plays for them boss still maintaining that kind of work ethic competitiveness competitor. And it's going to get the puck but but add another element to it not get at the able to go and get a nigga play on it or take it to the net and create space so it every year you just started developed a little bit more pretty cool. You said there. Your senior year was was a really important year for now. I'm sure you haven't thought of it this way but i was you. Were talking about it. It's like what if you're didn't go that well like isn't easing that. Six eight months was such a key point now so many years ago. But i guess it tells you you've got to be in the present where you are. That's where that's where it.

"A fan of the edmonton weiner's sacher. Just a fan of the sport. In general it doesn't appear that you've had much of the way of growing pains in making the jump from the toronto maple leafs from the east to the west to the edmonton honors. Has the transition for you to this point. Really been a smooth as it appears been It's been pretty smooth and it's been it's been really fun but obviously when you when you move cities and windows moving you're picking up moving your family. There's there's some growing pains there with getting a house and getting a new car and getting situated but from a hockey and point and from a teammate standpoint. it's been unbelievable. and and the city's been incredible breezy point here. So everything's been really good. And i think the auto credit for the guys for being so welcoming because we do have a bunch of guys who amend and that's exceptionally when you're kicking around all this stuff at the end of last year that you know you're in discussions with the leafs. Is there a way to make it fit. You probably had a feeling one way or the other. But what's that decision like for someone who's at home plan for the leafs and you can see kind of where this is heading like. What's that last couple of weeks like a lot of sleep. The it's It's a hard time just because there's so many moving parts and and it's not just the hockey decision the vision the family decision to i need ten months. But i'm timing. I dunno seven months summertime and thinking about you know. where is your son. Grow up your wife's moving ways. She's from toronto. Atlanta's and i always kind of having a family here have. Both of our families are in charles. So it's not just a hockey situation. It's it's a ally situation but we're really happy with with the decision obviously and tamaki implant. It was so easy. We've definitely like. I said that i thought would would work really well and then instead of four but one of the most important parts fat precision was actually born outside and and the city and seeing where. We haven't seen where theo or summer grow up and alanna never been then so when she got there and was able to see all those things that we've been easier decision process and we're really happy. So you're you're playing with austin matthews. Who's probably the best shooter in the game or next to oversee the best shooter in the game and chances are you're going to go to edmonton and now you're gonna. You're you got to play with mcdavid or dry seidel. It's not like it's not like you're getting short thriftier. Like what have you noticed among these great players you've got to.

"I don't know how you fix it. I mean like people. Can you know all they've got to make changes while you've got the same players you're not trading those players. You're not changing those players. How can those players be better more consistently even their own team. Says the same thing. Jake muslim who. I a feel or sense of moslem that. There's there's not a lot of bullshit jake. Muhsin agreed and so he said at the beginning of the year we we've learned a to be a little more mature in our game. Yeah well right now. They need to stick their noses in. They need to get their hands dirty because they may think they are. They're not san. Jose deserved the win. The other night they played the night before and montreal. Toronto had four days off five days off. They should toronto. Should've skated those guys into the ice. And it didn't happen and not much is happening throughout that lineup. With the exception. I mean michael hutchinson and his game wasn't very good right now. They've got the injury maroshek. Sounds like he's getting healthy. Jack campbell for the most part is has been fine if not better than fine but then you look at the defense. You mentioned muhsin david camp. Who's a real good defensive forward. His numbers aren't good defensively. Their power play isn't like you're the coach your sheldon keefe. You're looking at it. Gone aside from juggling that lineup. Where do you start. Just start with the power play and say okay. It's been it's been five games but really it's been two games. Yeah i've been six games. It's been two games because matthew knives visas about but everybody's hung up on the setup whether mourner belongs in the middle or on the wing against san. Jose couldn't get in the zone right no matter what your setup is. They couldn't get in the zone so they're not sharp. They're not right. Some of it can be cured with with a little bit more as we used to. Call a little as my dad. You say a little more elbow grease right like you get you get to work here. All all throw allies patterson from the connection. That's too there are times when a player thinks they're working hard enough and they're not like pederson says. Yeah my game's not right yet and you know what think back to his first year. How many times did you see him. Just tenaciously winning pocket. Back as an always on the puck like pavel data. Klay there right now. He may think he's doing it. he's not in. Toronto is not committed enough to get themselves over the hump to let their talent takeover. They're not yet and they better get there quick. Yeah agreed likewise with the chicago. Blackhawks this imprint. They're they're not but that's the way it appears. And i didn't think that they were going to make great strides. But i did feel that they were going to be better. And maybe that was putting too much stock. And bringing in seth jones and marc andre fleury and of course jon tapes being back on the ice leadership role and being healthy again. That's just a great. Nhl story but it just it. It feels like they're coming apart at the seams with that organization. Like on and off the ice while i was there for was there tuesday. I guess now and it was their home opener. They were playing the islanders. They played a good thirty minutes really good thirty minutes and then they just fell apart in their start. One in five their minus fifteen in goals like that is a debacle. Mine is so..

"Sergei rabovsky who's been booted in the shins for the last few years for pretty average play spencer night as well. They've got aeronautic bled back joel quenneville of course behind the bench. He said he sees a little bit of you. Know the the blackhawk copiers in this panther team. Yeah terrific start for them. Edmonton is connor. Mcdavid on pace for like two hundred twelve points again. It's crazy start for him. Their power play is unreal. I think two things that are going to be key for the oilers have been terrific so far one is the play. Duncan keith now. He's not duncan keith. From twenty ten but he has been really good yeah. He's been very good for them. That helps certainly on their defense. The others are goaltending has been more than adequate. Mike smith i and then when he got banged up a bit and he'll be back later this week. Apparently mika skin it's it's been been more than adequate if they can do that in goal man at mcdavid and dry seidel there now. They got hyman. And and pull yari. As and ryan nugent hopkins. That's that's a good team carolina. I'm surprised that they got like ten or eleven new guys. I thought they were going to have a little bit of a feeling out process. Freddie anderson's been awesome and goal for them. You know so. They're they're often running in the team. That i think they're one of the better teams but it surprised me how much they've scored early as saint. Louis a write in david perron had a hat trick. The he seems to be getting better. You like saint. Louis is where he thrives right. You're right. he went away. Played elsewhere back to saint louis. It's just the place for. Yeah all right. So we go through the undefeated. Which probably won't be undefeated when you're listening to the podcast. That's fine some great stories out of the gate so now let's kick over to the not so great and we'll start with the toronto maple. Leafs who again are playing the undefeated carolina hurricanes this monday night. So perhaps that takes the maple leafs in in a different direction. The morning skate children keefe essentially changed everything. He defended nick ritchie and rightfully. So i felt in talking about okay. Everybody in the media. Want to gravitate to nick. Ritchie isn't a fit with matthew matthews minor. Finally said okay. Well you could ask the same questions..

"All cans. It's so quick. Their goal is you can go. Get something between whistles and not miss any play like. I just think that's so cool. The building also one other thing lighting in the stands has got this kind of off blue to it so when you look into it into the stands it seems like everybody's the goal is that everybody's underwater like you're in the crack in how that's really cool. Look they didn't. It is amazing. The next best arena is going to be the one in belmont for the new york islanders. That valley group is building to. That's gonna open up in later next month. But this climber pledge arena spectacular the crack and play a hell of a game. Yeah they expansion their way to a loss you know they probably could won that game. But thatcher damn cole was awesome and goal and connor garland. Who i think is gonna be. The most popular vancouver can occur one of them by christmas time. If he's not gonna be sooner. He's scored the game winner. It was it was good stuff. It was fun to watch again from afar. And and so we maintain this positively here through the early going on and and we're recording this on monday. So there are some undefeated teams. That may not be when you're listening to this podcast. Let's let's stay on that theme if we can let's look at the edmonton honors or the florida. Panthers right you should. We be surprised. We're talking about a small sample size here right. Four five six games of regular season play. But are you seeing enough in what we've seen carolina from florida from the monitor's teams that are are navigating their way through swiftly here to believe that okay. You're not going wire-to-wire. That's ridiculous to even suggest. But the fact that. Their unbeaten in the early goings of this regular season. No fluke while when we were down i did the season opener in tampa bay and we asked john cooper. I think you know something about win. And they want to cups in a row. Who's really good. He said i'll tell you it was really good. Florida said florida is good. So they're five and they've scored. I think over four goals a game..

"You know that's doing that. Yeah i don't wanna do that anymore. What i've what i've learned is that they got more goals than we did. In that game you know and listen. Wasn't you know bad bounces happen all day. Long steve all day long. You know in hockey in playoff hockey you know. So they're fine fuck. They had a great year get jinxed again it's not it's not like steve you're hanging onto like harry sinden. I think ran the boston. Bruins right around seventy four years in a row like that right like that guy's name is still around there. I might get it. I might get it saying okay. You know every team steve. Every team goes through where they gotta rebuild into all that stuff and and where are we catching at. What part of their rebuild. You know but. I don't know to get rid of the guy. The gm get rid of the coach. No they played great. They had a good series. They play they had a great series. Edmonton had a great series. Three of those games were in overtime. You know so. Yeah i think Sometimes you do need to make a tough decision by making changes and and not kowtowing to things because yeah that's the nature of hockey. It's short series seven game series and can happen ryan and honestly. Nobody likes to see the leafs having trouble more than me. But you know jake muhsin maybe most hard asked defense. But i don't think there's any question is and your captain john taveras your experienced skill guy. joe thornton is a so-called experience skill. He has experienced for sure. I don't know that you can put his skill in the elite department. The way you can. I know you can't weekend with john taveras. So he was a big mess to lose him in game one. He probably makes a difference in that series. And you wanna bring in these. All that joe thornton thing. This is what i thought. Toronto shoulda done right because the guy at streaks are greatness already a couple of great games and we will. We need them with the guys we need. The we need the experience. We need the body. Yada yada yada. Bring joe thornton okay. But not.

"Finally. You don't find it. Finally we got by these guys so we they might feel invincible. so yeah they. They were a well constructed team in the eighties and early nineties. It just they were just in the wrong division that any other era. They might've made some serious noise. But not only did they have edmonton bob and steve smith berries. One into his own net or on the trip up. I mean calgary was there to mop up. Whatever spoils were left over and winnipeg was kind of the young not not the little brother but the even younger brother. It just was unfortunate things out at the deal. Howard chuck team was really really good. Yeah i you know salani right was on the team. Team will salani right and winnipeg yup and i think he got seventy goals. One year he did. He had seventy six as a rookie. Jesus jesus but no. I don't know if you've got one later. Then he won with the anaheim ducks and of course came expensive. My ottawa senators just total jeer anyway. Congratulations winnipeg fuckers. Wow that's quite a congratulations. Very gracious in defeat there. Do you think connor mcdavid off-season you know ruffles feathers the way. Aaron rodgers is in green bay. You know he's got a contract in everything. Both guys have contracts but Allegedly earn rogers as told people that are close to him. Who then i guess you know completely betrayed him or maybe he wanted them to go to the media with it but Talked about i guess That he might have played his last game for the green bay. Packers director mcdavid does something. Like that edna. Kaz there's no shortage of media and social media where people are saying. Oh my god connor mcdavid. He shouldn't be expected to put up with us. He's the greatest players ever lived and this is nonsense. The no i don't think so he he doesn't he. He keeps his cards pretty close to his chest. He in his postgame. You know he he. He gave the usual super proud of the guys and then did say that. We don't need to blow the whole thing up here right. We don't need to send the ship out You know in. it's all good. It's all good what he did do in that game. Which i haven't seen in all the years he's played here. Okay is he was on the screamed absolutely ripped Pull via harvey right Number yeah got big gunner star for shore He was passing it to connor. And he's he's right behind them and connor couldn't make the play right and if he ain't making that play nobody is right and he went to the bench. Steve and he freaked out. He freaked out yelling. That's the most most demonstrative. I've ever seen that guy you know. And and the play by play guy. Louis debrusk right while the colored guy was gone. That's what that guy should be. That's what he should be because the rap he does have. Steve is just you know. He's such a low reactor right that people are going to come on. Man you're the captain and the leader. This demon so it was sort of showing last night. And maybe maybe he'll finally get it. You know have added. Rip the boys you know. Yeah sometimes sometimes. It's just not guys nature right to be that sort like his personality which appears to be obsessive about the game and getting better and skill development and all that and you see it through the miracle of youtube you can go back and watch connor mcdavid when he was twelve..
