Reflections On Atlanta Braves Legend Henry "Hank" Aaron
"I could talk about the dignity in the class of hank. Aaron the man the you've been being for an hour easily but i'm a numbers guy and so let me tell you what i did. After hank aaron died i navigated over to his page on baseball reference. And i don't know. I just be held the majesty of this man's career and it literally gave me goosebumps. The more i looked the more. I realized he was beyond great. He was at some other level. He wound up with nearly thirty eight hundred hits. And that's a lot of freaking hits. It's a thousand more history chipper jones. It's two thousand more hits than mark. Maguire it's more hits than johnny bench and hank greenberg got combined and they're both in the hall of fame so i think about all those hints and i think about those seven hundred fifty five homeless because that's two hundred more homes than mickey mantle. Two hundred it's more homers than edgar martinez and duke snider hit combined. And they're both in the hall. But the more i dug i found other cool stuff to hank. Aaron had double digit home run seasons at age twenty and age. Forty here the only three players who did that. Willie mays ted williams hank aaron. That's a pretty good. Start on a mount rushmore. Would you say and all those home runs. He hit for all those years. This never struck out one hundred times. Then there's total basis crushes. Everyone who ever played in total bases six thousand eight hundred and fifty. Six total bases isn't just a record. It's seven hundred. Twenty two more than stan. Musial was the next closest player in history. If stan musial had hit another one hundred and eighty home runs. He still wouldn't catch i karen and total basis. That's a lot of total basis. That's incredible hitter hank. Aaron was for two decades. So is it possible to be one of the greatest players who ever lived and still the underrated. After looking over hank aaron's numbers. I think it is my name. Is david o'brien cover the braves for the athletic. And there's only two guys that i've ever felt this aura around them and that was mohammed ali and hank. Aaron and hank aaron. How's interviewed him. The first time at spring training. I remember approaching him and it was just You know i've done this for thirty years. And it was feeling. I've had unlike any other athlete that i've ever approached but then he immediately just he smiled and was so warm that that fear or intimidation just as melted away. And you could not believe that you were talking to this. Superstar is genuine icon living in atlanta for twenty years You can't overstate the importance of hank. Air to this city and this region the south. I grew up in the south and hank aaron being a black man being the greatest one of one of the two or three greatest players of all time and to do what he did in the south and then living in atlanta and seeing hank aaron you know mementos anchor and tributes and see his name on buildings and streets and that kind of thing. I would argue that. There is no athlete. That is more important to a city than hanker and wants to atlanta. He was such a huge part of how the culture of the south has changed. I mean this is a city where you feel fide of being so much black acceptance here. Thanks a huge huge part of that. He helped pave the way for all these other black athletes and entertainers wanna come here to be here. Brian jordan know it was an all star with atlanta. Bryant said that The reason that he chose atlanta was hank. Aaron and was a boy idle here. He said a black kid growing up playing baseball hank. Aaron was the guy but it was an opportunity for me to meet my hair. The hope the opportunity is given so many kids today. Amazing dominique wilkins. Said hank was a big reason. That he came here was one of the first people. It's probably one of the most instrumental guys into getting me here in atlanta. But one for god like hank. I wouldn't been here. Was hanker went to ted turner and said hey you need to get this kid by any means necessary. He said people should give the roses while they're alive and that he's glad to see him getting them now but he said hank should have been put on a pedestal decades ago and he was right What are the things that i remember him saying is that you gotta set example for people to come at you. And how do you do that. You do the right way you doing about being Have miltie you do it by just doing the right thing and the right thing a lot of times. It's hard and a lot of guys. Young guys don't know how to do the right thing. As far as how they present themselves to people and how they get back to people so to give back experts that i've learned over the years has become from erin trampling. We don't see that much of that anymore today. And he lived in the same house that he bought when he came here in. Nineteen sixty six from the

"It's it's hard to say, especially if Harper ends up going to the Phillies, it's going to be really tight at the top there in other than the Marlins all these teams are gonna be beating up each beating up on each other all season long. So I don't know that there's a clear favorite. But I could see the nationals. Ending up victorious, which of course, we all would have said last season two and sort of similar to the reds just to keep this theme is that I think the nationals did a really job of discerning what their biggest holes were and addressing them pretty early in the offseason. Like catcher has been a problem with them for a couple years now ever since Wilson Ramos got hurt and they went out and traded freon gums from Cleveland, and they signed Kurt Zouqi who now form one of the better catching tandems in the game. There has been a problem. They signed Trevor Rosenthal coming off surgery this. They traded for Kyle bear claw the back of the rotations been a problem. So they signed anabol- Sanchez. They brought back Jeremy heloc sin. In addition to go with Corbin. So they were pretty smart in making sure that or at least trying to prevent any replacement level players from accruing number of at bats or innings pitched, and that gives them a pretty high floor in addition to the immense ceiling that they already had. Yeah. And if we're operating under the assumption. They lose Harper the season the want. Soto had last year gets up so much leeway to move on from him just in terms of the outfield debt that he provides an like an impact bat right away. Last thing. I want to say about Washington is I've liked to draw the parallel between this nationals team with with Harper and Strasbourg and sherzer Ed Rendell on sue the turn of the century. Mariners with with Edgar Martinez in a rod and Ken Griffey junior and Brady Johnson and it in terms of teams that had so little postseason success despite putting together just unfathomable amount of bigly talent. And a you know, it one thing that that I often forget even is that the years after Griffey left. The Mariners may be ale C S both years in the in the first years after Griffey left and the the second one of those was one hundred sixteen when season and the two seasons after that they won ninety three games each even though they didn't make the playoffs. So like, I don't know if Bryce Harper's Ken Griffey junior in this metaphor, maybe. That's what this looks like for the nationals over the next couple of seasons. Michael predicts the nationals one hundred sixteen games write it down. Hey, man. Hey, man, it could happen or maybe. I'll just do you. Always do it say, oh, no. It would be cool..

"He was very quiet, and you know, but that shouldn't be something that's a negative to keep him out of the hall of fame. Edgar martinez. I go back to this is when Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey junior are on the Mariners. And I'm in Baltimore for a game on vacation. I go to see the game. Go down to the batting cage. I'm down at the batting cage. And I got it seemed like the entire J buehner. Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey junior. All came over to me to say, why don't you guys talk about Edgar Martinez more, and it stayed with me, and I don't know how many years ago that was probably twenty years ago, but it stayed with me that they felt that strongly about Edgar Martinez, and he wasn't getting enough credit for being a great player. And then I started to do research his on base percentage. Career on base percentage is the fourth best in the history of baseball by right handed hitters the only guys in front of him are Jimmie Foxx. Frank, Thomas and Rogers Hornsby, so he's fourth of all right handed hitters in career on base percentage. And I know that the knock was well he wasn't good enough to play in the field. He was great hitter. Why is it we allow one dimensional players? Get in a closer is one dimensional wasn't good enough to be a starter. But he's good enough to be a closer. Edgar wasn't good enough to play in the field. But he's one of the great hitters of all time. So we pick and choose with that Frank Thomas wasn't a good fielder. But he was an unbelievable hitter. But Frank didn't get in for his glove. But Rivera, I'm happy for him. He's he's a wonderful person. That'd be how I described. That's how I would start describing him not baseball is a wonderful person. And what he's. You know when you're around him. You don't know that that's the greatest reliever time. So happy for him. And a great moment to be the first player ever. Now, if you're his family if you're Marianne, oh, do you feel like your the greatest player of all time? You can make that case. Because I wondered how do you process that you got every vote and nobody's ever gotten every vote. You're one of one is he the most perfect baseball player in history from for what he was doing for how he did it for as long as he did it. Did you see that stat was something like he led in less earned runs than people who have walked on the moon? Yeah. Was that World Series post-season or something something crazy what there was postseason? It was eleven to twenty. By the way. Edgar Martinez is batting average against Barry on a Rivera. Anybody want to guess? Is it in the two hundred three hundred four hundred. Lower higher. Edgar Martinez batted five seventy nine against Marian Rivera. Bust out of the day. Here comes that. What stat of the? Stat of the day. Maybe he shouldn't have gotten one hundred percent then. Yeah, I gave up a little blueprints like ninety nine or two Luiz Gonzalez. Yes. Bowl. More Rivera gave up no earned runs in the nineteen ninety eight playoffs ninety nine playoffs and the two thousand they won World Series. All the time, by the way, if you'd like to join the show in Atlanta, you can we're going to have probably room for fifty people per day to.

And schilling were slam dunk Jason stark wrote a couple years ago that if we're gonna have closers in the game if that's going to be a role in the game. Then the best of them Trevor Hoffman lease myth. I was voted for him. Certainly, Maryland Rivera. They ought to be honored in the hall of same thing with you know, and I would say this about Edgar Martinez. Do you do, you know, can you name two players? They've forgotten the hall of fame because of defense now I say too because you would say well Ozzie Smith did. Yeah. Likewise. Can you think of one player that didn't get the hall of fame because his defense was lousy? No Martinez was won an overwhelming offensive player. His on base percentage was twenty first all time, he his opium that's on base per slugging. It's the thirty third. Best of all time. He was an amazing player and he didn't hurt his team defensively. Yeah. That's right. I, you know in a long time getting in. And here's the reason he played in an era of the voting populace is now skewing younger more of inclined to accept analytics, I think they're more ways to assess the players career than ever before. But we've seen a played how many games do you play at came in yards Fenway park. He played in the American League east. He played at a time when the ballpark got smaller the strike zone was the size of a postage stamp. The players got bigger all of that stuff. And he was he and chilling to move seen. It was absolutely dominant. I mean, he was dominant Fitch two hundred innings eleven times in there's a stat all these new staff, but there's this that call war for pitchers, and it's just an it's just an effort to try to put a guys total career into context. Twenty third all time. I mean, he's in that list. But if you're going by traditional numbers ERA things. Nope. He doesn't measure up to Bob Gibson. Well, guess what? It's not. He didn't pitch in nineteen sixty eight head. He pitched in nineteen sixty eight he might have been in that conversation. He he was he was absolutely that good. Let me let me get to seen. Let's let's have a little bit of pushback on scene because today Tom Izzo wrote a column lauding Messina and saying he should be in. And I hear you and you covered them. I mean, you watched him pitch. My recollection of Mike Masino, and I'm gonna strip away. How smart he was going to Stanford? Okay. I'm not because he's a pitcher. I don't really care where did read book. I understand you probably read the wrong books probably read the wrong, but I'll I'll get to this. I never thought of him as the ace of any particular staff as I mean, in the way that I think of match sure Zor. I did not think of Mike Messina in that in that way. And so to me, you can put them in the hall of fame, but it was up to me. I'm not sure that I would have you know, that's all I didn't. I thought that they were pitchers on staffs with him. I mean, one twenty in his last year, and I'm old. So twenty means something so ERA means something so going out there going out there and being handed the ball. Stop losing streak means something to me. You can I think when you look at the totality of his career. He defined greatness to me. And by the way, if you met him he would he's you're kinda guy told me he's a little bit on the snarky side. Sometimes he would begin its post game news conference by saying Craig that's not in the form of a question. Would you like to try again? Another time. He would wait maybe sometimes near the manager's office. And we will come out. He would go. Well, how did he explain that one? Trust me. You would love Mike. I'm seeing you know, I would say in Mark Fontane who's a loyal little. Yeah. He said, you know, I think of the Aaron Boone game game seven two thousand three. I think of that as the Marian Rivera game on one day's rest..

"Yeah, definitely feeling. In January going into next week. All right. Thank you, my friend. All right. Thanks money. Talk to you soon. All right now on Colorado's morning news. Walk up music for legendary Yankees reliever. Mariano rivera. He's the first player unanimously elected to the baseball hall of fame. The new class. Also includes ROY halladay Edgar Martinez and Mike Mussina right now, we're looking at the class with Iraqis insider, Ed Henderson, good morning. Good morning guys. How are you doing? Well, thanks for joining us before we get into the merits of the new class wanna talk about rocky slugger. Larry Walker he increased his vote total pretty significantly but didn't make the cut defense. He's going to get even a greater percentage next year for him to get into the hall. I sure hope so Marty I think he deserves it clearly he's a guy that with several teams demonstrated terrific ability and the talent. And I think Larry over the course of time. We'll probably get the opportunity, but you know, it's always that Coors field bias that seems to factor into you know, any Rockies player that might pop up on the about do you think that's really what it is? Our his stats as good as they need to be to get in you. Thank you, April. I think. His stats are wonderful. I think the bottom line for Larry is that you know, there's there's been a time that people kind of dismissed what he was able to do especially during his tenure with the Rockies. And you know, I think it's unfortunate because you have so many people especially some of the younger voters now that aren't familiar with him. So I think that may be factors in as well. But I'm hopeful that that eventually all this is going to go. Well, because I certainly think what with what I saw him during his playing time in baseball. He certainly deserves to be in the hall, and I know it special for you to see ROY halladay get the call and be inducted this summer. He is a guy that you saw have hall of fame stuff way back when he was a west, isn't he? Absolutely, mike. I I was absolutely thrilled yesterday for Royce family and his friends and his teammates from our Vada west. And and all the guys played with along the way, he was he was very first guy that I scouted when I was with the Florida Marlins, and I have to say that. Yeah. It was mazing to me to see a guy right out of the gate with that kind of talent. And that kind of dedication and commitment mental toughness. He had it all, and I I was absolutely thrilled to see him get into the hall yesterday. They play some good baseball, Jeff kogo rebels. The I wanted to ask about other snubs, maybe that you think should be higher on the list or maybe on the precipice of getting in. You know, I think e you've got more of the guys that we're the PD steroids guys, and I think Clemens bonds, and those guys, you know, I think still there's a lot of voters that are going to say, Nope, never we're not gonna put in. But I I have to say that I think at some point it's going to happen that those guys will get into the hall, but you know, in terms of real I think those guys if if anybody deserves to be snubbed, it would be them just because of excuse me, how they how they enhance their opportunities through the use of banned substances. But bottom line for me. I think there'll be some more guys coming in the next few years. I think one guy that I would love to seek it and just because of what a bulldog you wasn't a postseason was Curt Schilling. And I think he's a guy that ultimately may make the greatest well and we'd be remiss if we didn't ask you about Marianna Rivera gets one hundred percent of the vote that is absent. Unheard of. But very deserving. I'm sure you'd agree without a question April. You know, I growing up a Red Sox fan. I saw Arianna way too many times. But I have to say that, you know, setting aside my personal feelings about the Yankees. I would tell you this that I think he's a guy that based on everything I saw from him both on and off the field. Totally deserved to be in the hall. And I think a fitting guy to be the first one to get a unanimous vote and very very happy for him and his family, and I can't believe baseball season's around the corner. I look forward to continuing our conversations into the next year. Thank you said, absolutely guys. Take care. Thank you to the Rockies insider. Ed Henderson few more sports details. We check in with Mike.

"As you know, how a day. The late today. Eighty five percent and Edgar Martinez. Eighty five percent and Mike Mussina no surprise to me anyway. But nonetheless in in need seventy five percent, he got seventy six point seven percent Andy Pettitte got nine point nine percent staying on the ballot for another year barrel aid, and the b twelve rocket barely up at all. What a shame. There at fifty nine percent last year, the b twelve rock got fifty seven percent last year. Barreled got fifty six percent. And Curt Schilling got sixty percent this time around Manny Ramirez from Washington heights wide. Manny with twenty two percent, Gary Sheffield with the thirteen percent hit the ball, very hard. We know from that, Billy Wagner. Sixteen percent. Jeff canned eighteen percent and mentioned earlier the Tom Lugt. Our did point out some enormous jumps in the vote totals in this hall of fame election. Edgar Martinez, plus sixty six to the election. Mike Massimino, plus fifty eight to election. Larry Walker plus eighty eight and more grand schilling by the way, plus forty three. Does exte- point nine percent? So you can surmise and it makes sense Walker and chilling on track for twenty twenty induction day. And while we walk is. I'd say plus eighty eight Fred McGriff the crime dog plus seventy one to thirty nine point eight percent and chilling again, plus forty three to sixty point nine percent. So just a little bit with the updating but Rivera and Halliday and Edgar Martinez and moose seen from the class making up the class of twenty nine teen. And of course, a hundred percent of with class on and off the field didn't show. No mouthpiece Jimmy from him. And I know I'm going to hear Ono the warriors of today's team. Let me say I think there are three teams in America. That are on the hate the list one America's team. To the Golden State Warriors. And what would be the third team? And I and I think we'll let me think about that. For a second. I had a third team. And I lost my thought what is that third team? Oh, yeah. The patriots. How could I forget them? How could I thank you so much on the other side of the glass, Tom and Polly the patriots? How could I listen? And and more than the Yankees, by the way and more with the evil empire. "Right before the show today did a very unscientific poll of here's the blind resume and Ken against Edgar Martinez. And it's remarkable to me. I mean, sixty one percent picked Kint out of a thousand people that voted or whatever. A fifteen hundred RBI is used to be a magic number the fact that he did it at this position used to mean something I don't know if it's Jeff Kent wasn't the nicest guy in the world. So he doesn't get more support. There's nobody there that's kind of fighting for him. But boy and wondering MVP Martinez never finished hired and sixth. I don't get the Jeff camping at all. Hey, yeah. I mean, listen, he. Yeah. He was kind of a prickly personality. No question about to drop the Lee. Voters. I guess but more than anything what I see happening. Chris is a lot of voters now, especially the younger ones are putting a lot of faith in wins above replacement war. Right. It's not. It's not empirical data. It's kind of a shorthand way of trying to throw. Everybody's stats into one round number, and it's an approximation. So it's a good place to start. But you can't divide people from the hall of fame or not just based on that one number especially the defensive metric aren't really that reliable yet. And they look at cans defensive numbers, which affects his war. And I think people knock him down a few pegs because of that. And again, I think that's unfair. Because when you think about people who are making their decisions about who to play where to play them their jobs, depending on I'm talking about general managers managers presidents, Jeff cads, stay there for a very long time. And when you have a second baseman who hits like a first baseman in the middle of your lineup and as a clutch hitter the numbers bear that out. You have a huge. Advantage. And that's what Jeff can't run. He was an outlier in terms of offensive ability at second base wanted MVP a team with Barry Bonds. I mean, that's remarkable. All right. We don't want to spend an hour and a half on this. Even though we know we could Tom how are you as a voter right now, handling the PD era who goes in and who doesn't on your ballot. For me. Anybody who's been publicly connected to steroid use was before testing or after testing. I don't vote for them. I will not vote for that. And there's no way that I can condone not just condone. But actually celebrate somebody at decision to use PD's. I'm not gonna keep somebody out based on pure speculation. I'm not gonna keep somebody out based on whispers, or, hey, this guy might have said this. But he's not gonna say it on the record. You know? I I try to bring the same standards to my vote that I would to doing a piece of journalism. Okay. So how do you define publicly connected. Is it got pinch? Like being Ramirez is at bonds. Is it Clemens? How does how do you define that? Yeah. Yes. Yes. And yes, certainly in terms of testing that's pretty easy. Right. Right. That testing in two thousand and three the other stuff is kind of irrefutable evidence. That's out there. The Mitchell report game of shadows the admission by bonds that he did use PD's he hypothetically or parenthetically said he didn't know what they were. So yeah. Those things are all factual evidence that connect someone to PD. Now. This is also going to remind you it's not a criminal case, you know, that we're talking about a civil trial essentially when I look at the ballot to look at all evidence factual evidence and putting anybody in jail again. This is about endorsing someone's entirety of their. Career. What do they belong in the hall of Famer nuts? So that's my position. I don't see a changing certainly a fact that we have testing now going forward really helps make it a little bit easier..

"Edgar martinez. Jordan. Maybe the greatest single moment in what tomorrow could become a hall of fame career for Mariners. Great. Edgar martinez. Ryan did covers the Seattle times. And he's good enough to join us on the KOMO Newsline. Ryan when I checked the last tracking numbers this morning. It's still looks like everything is is pointing very very well for Edgar to get elected tomorrow. Is that accurate? Yeah. I know. It's very accurate. I'm I'm looking at the latest data now from not Mr. Tibbs on Twitter, the Orion sibito whose tireless human being him. And his group of guys attracts all these votes. Accumulates all these ballots, and as of now Eggers on ninety one percent of the votes that they counted or known balance, I guess, you call it, and I think that's two hundred and fifteen known ballots year ago at this time was roughly about two hundred twenty ballots known and he was only on about seventy seven percent he short, you know, that number obviously, the ovation regression with the anonymous voters in MIS fell down to seventy percent for his overall total. Have you taken typical regression? He would fall into the the the allotted number of seventy five percent needed the big number or you're trying to track. At least in the way, you you. It is. Boats. Gained guys that didn't vote for him in the past voted for him now, at least unknown balanced and he's getting twenty five. This year plus twenty five and logic coming into the season thought he needed to get about twenty votes to insurance rhyme. And so it's it's working pretty positive for Edgar and the Mariners. There's no superstition in baseball. Ryan without being said is right now looking like a lock. Yeah. I always tell people not to believe in jinx's during no hitters and the mirrors posted and all this other stuff. But yeah, I mean, the math tells you at seems to be a walk. I just it would be it would take something. I Don I wanted to cataclysmic, but something very odd. These numbers not Japan out like a movement of anonymous voters not to vote for him. But you know, he's out of twenty five guys at didn't vote for voted for him this year, and that makes a huge difference. I think it'll be about four hundred and twenty-five boats or somewhere in that neighborhood. So he is trending in the right way in the past years. You know, he got seventy basically seventy one percent of the ballots last year. The last eight times where a candidate Donald between seventy and seventy four percent. He was elected in the next year and this being Eggers, spinal you're on the ballot. I think that there's a lot of people recognizing that. And making sure that he's one of the people that they're voting for of the group that they do vote for. Well that all sounds really positive for Edgar Martinez. He has waited a decade now, hopefully tomorrow, he will get that phone call that many hope he does Ryan dish covers the Mariners and he'll be getting out.
