It's great to be here and I really look forward to. Talking about good health effects. Absolutely, in preparation for the interview, I was listening to pretty much all your content that I could get my hands on online and I've seen you mentioned in numerous. Speeches and talks about. Teaching is so central to who you are nothing fires you up more than explaining concept and then seeing a student that light bulb moment where they get it and I just want to say where did that come from before we jump into everything we're doing a passion for teaching come from while I can tell you clearly my passion for teaching, which is every bit as as large as my passion for a discovery or original research. My my passion for teaching came early when I was in elementary school and high school and you know why? Because I had lousy teachers and I would always sit there and wonder why can't these people explain something better than what I could. Read in the Damn Book. You know they're there to teach your up in front of the room teach and impart your information to this edens so that we can understand it and I swore that if ever the day came when I would be a university professor, I would not do it their way. I would do it my way and try to become the best teacher I could, and I've always had this passion for communicating with students I love that that's incredible and we'll come back to that. In your origin story. I want to take a moment to congratulate you because we're coming up on the twenty second anniversary of your Nobel Prize I believe you got the prize. In October. Twenty two years ago. Does that sound right? You very good at this very, very good. Yes. I the announcement of my Nobel Prize was an October twelve. Of One, thousand nine, hundred, Ninety, eight, and you know this coming Monday October fifth the Twenty Twenty Nobel Prizes will be announced. So get ready. You one thing I don't know who's going to get it. But I'M NOT GONNA get it a second time. That one is enough. One is fantastic. Especially one as powerful as the one that you've gotten, we should awe only hope and dream that we can have direction i WanNa talk about your basis of the work for receiving the Nobel Prize for discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. Let's start off with the basics what is nitric oxide and how's it so fundamentally related to our health and function. That's a great question would require a about a week to answer but I will try to do it in a couple of minutes. Nitric oxide firstly, I want to remind everyone is not a gas I I mean is not a liquid or solid, but rather it's a gas. It's a gaseous substance that only lasts for a few seconds. It's very unstable. This is what made it so difficult to find in the in the human body, and that's why the discovery came. So late in the nineteen eighties and so essentially. What I discovered was that our bodies produce this molecule of nitric oxide which should not be confused with nitrous oxide. That's laughing gas, and that's what's used in a dentist office, for example, to relieve pain. Nitric oxide although it sounds the same is a totally different molecule and. What we discovered was that our arteries, our endothelial cells that line the arteries actually make this nitric oxide and what nitric oxide does is phenomenal. It's Vasil later. It widens the arteries and when it does that it lowers the blood pressure, it improves blood flow to different Oregon's was your dilating the arteries and. In addition, this nitric oxide can keep the inner lining of the arteries healthy so that blood does not clot a when it's not supposed to in the arteries also prevents cholesterol plaques from depositing in the arteries. So as long as you keep making nitric oxide in those endothelial cells, it will keep your vascular system very healthy. So one of the reasons we make nitric oxide is to protect our cardiovascular systems against high blood pressure. Stroke and heart attack.
Bucks protest by not playing Game 5
"The NBA's Milwaukee Bucks. The team with the best record in the League decided not to take the floor for game five of their playoff series against Orlando. The players made the decision to call for change following the police shooting of Jacob Lake in Kenosha Wisconsin the later postponed that game as. Well as to whether that were set to take place. The cause was later taken up by the WNBA several baseball teams, several major league soccer teams, and tennis player Naomi Osaka former. NBA Player Chris Webber gave emotional analysis of the Milwaukee players decision last night delivering a powerful message on what would have been the live telecast of the game we understand is not gonna end but that does not mean young men that you don't do anything. Don't listen to these people telling you don't do anything because it's not going to end right away. You were starting something for the next generation and the next generation to take over you have to be smart. Yes. Do you have to make sure that you have a plan. Yes. Do you have to be articulate about that plan? Yes. All of those things but that's what you're going to do. They're professionals they know how to be the best of themselves. And so I applaud it I applaud it because it is the young people is the young people leading the way. And I applaud. NBA Players, association held a meeting last night about whether to continue to play this season multiple reports say the La Lakers clippers voted against finishing the postseason home. Teams voted to continue the NBA's board of governors will meet today to determine the next steps Milwaukee Bucks on Mark Lazarie West's Edens Jamie. Cuban gives squawk box this statement I fully support our players change is never easy. I am proud of our guys taking the lead and using their platform to try and effect change I am with them every step of the way, and it is amazing to think that the bucks decision to protest the game happen exactly four years to the day after Colin Kaepernick I took a knee to protest the playing of the National Anthem

Even MORE Fire Emblem in Smash?
"We got some fire emblem news. We've got two bits of fireable news but let's start off with a smaller bit of news in which we learn more about the expansion. Pathway for the deal is coming February twelfth and it includes centered shadow side story includes a new house called the Ashen. Wolves excited yeah. It's like I had an opportunity community to jump back into a fire. Emblem as of yet and every time that there's a new DLC drop. I'm like yeah this is it for me like I'm really going to do at this time. this one. I'm like what's up with this subterranean house. Yeah Larry Down there and like we even poked around down there in the main game where we were like going through the catacombs and stuff uh-huh and we just didn't see any of these characters either way. I think it looks cool. I will say twenty five bucks too much. I think twenty five dollars is too expensive for this like especially if like it's a it's like depending on the length like if it's like a full campaign if we're looking at like another fifty plus hours I mean it has new classes quest does does yeah. There's there's a lot more to it and adding four whole new characters. That's for me. That's worth it definitely gonNA play I wish structure of the DOT CPAC for farmland was different in that they weren't just kind of like these side stories. Interwoven into the game. They were like for people who finish the game. There would be like a clear next chapter like or like blood and wine was done in which three. Yeah but I'm totally play this. I'm curious so those four characters. If you complete the side story they will then ah added to the rest of the story you can recruit them and play with them but I mean they added Anna as it's a character she didn't have any support search or anything and I was very disappointed about that which it may be not care about her at all like oh I think it's I'm interested in like chatting up new students edens and stuff. I think the the the dude that they focused not like that just want to make friends some friends prince. I think the back everybody I think that the the the main dude. They focused on like the big like Hunky Dude with the dual Claus's muscles. Yeah like that wasn't doing it for me like I you know I don't need to be I guess but yeah it looks cool off I will also play it but we'll we'll see if I don't know twenty. Five dollars is kind of a lot. Honestly as last time I was really into fire emblem and I heard about the cats and then I just immediately went and spent the money on the deal sea so they just have to have one thing that makes me really want it. Oh yeah the cats in the steam room and just like good too and I was just like yeah. This is where twenty five dollars fats. Going Asana like for sure so I don't know if that's don't take the cats into the sun. No cats like water. It's very rare it's unit it's hang out and I mean my cat does hang out in the sun on purpose to get hot understand. My cat likes hanging out in my bathroom and shower so think she like Asana seem like it two dogs though also really quickly you just want to mention that pokemon toilet wings mini series episode. One is out now on Youtube Channel. They it's a seven minute. Long animated animated short set in the Galilee region. You see some of Leon and chairman Rosen but other characters. It's really sweet and heartwarming. And we'll get a new episode of these each month each month I was very disappointed by that. Be seven episodes. It's like well we'll finish this in seven months seven minutes. It's long yes it's like six or seven. It's it's pretty sure. The other series that they did before was only three minutes so it is longer. The voice acted. It's because really nice. The animations great. I really like the different tone. It sets compared to the regular anime series. Seems a little bit more mature because it follows stories. That isn't about Ash.

Data Shows Air Travel Safety Not Compromised During Shutdown
"Government data shows air travel remain safe during the partial government shutdown although resources or becoming more strained joining me now via Skype from Chicago is Wall Street Journal reporter, Alison cider Allison. Tell us about this data you found that it does support. The president's statements that air traffic control remain safe, despite the partial government shutdown. Yes, what we found is a data shows that serious traffic control deviations. That's when planes are coming in dangerously close to one another in the air on the ground. You haven't really changed from year ago? Even though the government has been shut down for about a month now and air traffic controllers are working without pay. We also found that through actually a four percent drop over sort of a broad range of air, traffic, control, deviate, and that voluntary reports from pilots and controllers of safety incidents are actually down fourteen percents from a year ago. So I think that is somewhat reassuring to people who are concerned that airtrav. Might be less safe right now because so many people working aviation industry are federal workers who are working during the government shutdown that are not being paid. Right. And as you say, our traffic controllers have been coming to work without getting paid. But that is also raising concerns about whether they're feeling overworked or financially strained. What are you hearing from advocates? Yes, what we're hearing from controller set the stress levels have become quite alarming in these people haven't been paid. They're about to miss their second paycheck for a lot of people. That's a real financial strain. The job is already quite stressful. And now some of them are talking about having to take second jobs. We saw some survey data that their union conducted that indicated, you know, as many as fifty people respond to their surveys that they were taking on outside work. Some of those are even fulltime jobs. So in air, traffic controller might be working at Starbucks or driving for Uber, and then showing up in the evening to do their actual job. Which job that requires a lot of intense focus, so it's concerning to the union that people are are having to take on outside. Work. We're also hearing from the union on some this data were seeing on on air safety, and they've questioned the validity of some of the results on voluntary incident reporting saying that you know, the system is just not really functioning. So the pilots and air traffic controllers who would make a report after safety incidents aren't able to do it. So, you know, they've questioned kind of weather that metric what that really shows during a government shutdown, and they've said sort of everyday that the town continues the system as a whole becomes less safe. And what about new hiring? That's something. That's also been stalled amid the shutdown. Ryan, I'm yes, there's an air traffic control Kadhamy, and it's been closed during the shutdown. So people who've recently been higher need to go through training. You know, they're kind of in limbo right now being told just to sit tight in. It's really not clear Reto for some of them. How long they'll be able to do that just not to have any income coming in to be able to really start their work, and that's a huge concern to their traffic controllers almost twenty percents of their existing is retirement eligible. So they really need constant pipeline of new. Controller's coming in. And if there's a big gap it could become a huge problem, especially since they're starting to see uptick in in resignations retirements people just saying I need a job where I get paid. It's people talking about leaving. So there's really facing what they say is a potential staffing crisis to the longer strikes out through the more concern that they're becoming about the system overall. And Allison what about those other shortages at the Transportation Security Administration. That's also been a concern here when it comes to airport in airline security. Yeah. There are a lot of federal workers that are volved it kind of all points in air travel, including people who work the checkpoints, and who scan bags at airports, the transportation security ministration, they are also considered essential. So they're still working, but they're not being paid. So what we seen is sort of a growing number of TSA. Edens the calling inside just can't come in today as he says they're hearing from their poise that they're facing financial imitation. That make it hard for them to come into work.

We begin this morning with thought leader Thursday here on the opening bell. Chuck Garcia is the executive vice president and director of commercial deposits and treasury management at associated Bank, and Chuck is back with us this morning in the thought leader chair Chuck good morning. Welcome back to the opening bell. Good morning. Nice to be here. A happy holidays to you as well. Here. We are again in the holiday season lots going on. We're gonna talk a little bit about what's happened in your world this year and other things, but let's get to some news with the fed getting ready to have its December meeting looks like another interest rate going up. How's this going to impact financial services sector? Well, it does look like it. I think there's still a tad of uncertainty. But I think what went from being one hundred percent certain is is still very high. So I think this next one is likely clearly it will have an effect really across the board commercial customers will see their rates rise from a from paying on the interest of loans similarly, consumers housing, it'd be interesting to see what happens with the mortgage industry. I think those are already somewhat built in. But clearly it's going to have a have an impact albeit relatively still historically very, very low. I think there's the mental aspect that. People say oh rates are rising. And obviously rates we pay to clients will will increase as well. Are you? What are your thoughts about whether the fed is going to continue this in twenty nineteen nine? There's been a lot of talk about this in the last couple weeks that may be December is going to be the last one for a while. I see too in the coming year. Okay. I think the uncertainty here in the US alone with the tariffs and the trade wars, you know, looming cetera. But also, there's a lot of uncertainty abroad, you have France. Now, obviously, the Brexit situation. There's a lot of uncertainty abroad, and we're all intertwined any longer. And and so I think that's going to have an impact on their desire to to be probably as aggressive as they might have been they being the fed as aggressive as they might have been previously. Do you think it's actually had an impact on businesses, especially local businesses that are they is this something that's causing them to stop and pause their plans. I think it has you know, depending on the industry you're in to raw-materials are part of your production cycle, and your and your supply chain. There's absolute evidence. Having an impact is slowing some things down. I think the farm industry to you know, living where we do. That's continuing to have a drag on that as well. How does the interest rate going up or going down impact the day to day management of financials? Well, you have to really we have to do is really stay abreast of what are what our competition is doing. So for my pain perspective what we pay and interest rates to clients. You know, be they consumers or or corporates. It's certainly today has far more interest at the individual and company level than than it would have even a year ago. It was just immaterial at that point in time. Now, you know dollars are significant enough where people are paying attention and willing to to change in today's environment. If they don't feel like they're getting a proper rate or attention from their Bank. I heard some experts talking about the interest rate hikes have come so quick and fast that they haven't had. There hasn't been enough time for them to take hold and and people have become comfortable with them. Usually there is a bigger window between interest rates is there some truth to that about it still working its way through the system each one of these hikes. Well, I see both sides. I mean, the savvy investor those with large dollars they move very quickly today. If a rate increase does in fact occur they have they effectively expected to be an instantaneous change by their Bank. You know, the the normal John Q public guy like me doesn't pay. As much attention to it. But if all of a sudden, you look up and see oh my gosh. You know, I'm still backing the point one percent. That's not fair in today's environment. You know, they may they may choose to act on that. But I think I think the the savvy investor the corporate investor in the larger dollar people are absolutely much much quicker to react today. I'm interested in your opinion about the economy as it stands right now. Are there earning warning signs out there that you are hearing about or seeing or feeling? Yeah housing. I mean housing is shown some some slowdown, obviously that's a huge component of of our industry in our economy in so housing and the ripple effect that that in fact has is slowing down, you know, they're building as many apartment buildings people aren't buying single housing contrary to what I'm saying. You're the millennials are now moving to the burbs and buying houses. So I think you have kind of a reverse effect of people that are retiring moving into the rural areas, but it isn't fast enough to keep up in so housing. I think is one of the indicators I see that that could have a drag on the economy and then again as rates rise. It makes the affordability of a house that perhaps you could have afforded two years ago. Much less today. Chuck hang on with us. We're on with Chuck or see this morning executive vice president and director of commercial deposits and treasury management at associated Bank. It's our thought leader conversation. We're going. Continue with Chuck in just a few minutes. But first we need to take a quick break here in the opening bell at five nineteen to update traffic and a couple of business headlines.
