"Here with soledad O'Brien John mccafferty from Edelman financial engines also along for the ride Okay let's talk about stocks and specifically we want to talk about what happens when you've got one stock in particular maybe it's the stock of the company that you work for maybe it's shares in a stock that you inherited And over time it's become a really large part of your portfolio I want to talk about the risks that are involved in just having one big investment like that because I think a lot of people don't take it seriously enough I would imagine that part of the reason people get into this predicament is that it's emotional That there's some personal connection So a lot of people end up with these concentrated stock positions in the first place A variety of reasons So let's start with inheritance There's emotion there And one might be tied to a particular stock because maybe it's where mom or dad or grandma or grandpa worked their whole lives and it's served them well So there's this assumption that continuing to own or hold that stock will serve you well It may but it might not So you want to be aware of that and I would say adjust accordingly shift over to company stock So there may be some loyalty or we often hear you know I worked for this company and I know kind of what direction it's heading in Keep in mind that there can be a significant opportunity cost to continuing to own or have a larger percentage of your wealth represented by just one company Well you're talking about diversification and I think the other important thing to consider is that by having a big position in the company that you work for you are putting your job in the same bucket that you're putting your portfolio right And that could be a very dangerous situation as well if the fortune of that company happens to turn It's just another argument for diversifying and then the other thing and you made this point too is that sometimes when people have a stock that they inherited or a stock that they have from their employer they separate it They put it off to the side they think about it as not a part of their portfolio And that can be a mistake They can work out for you But I describe it as fear not just to the downside but fear to the upside as well What's that What does that mean So the fear to the downsides obvious would you agree with that Sure I mean I've seen people literally in the financial crisis who had their whole 401k and Fannie Mae stock It's a horrible experience You only need to go through it once There's that obvious fear of okay this one company could lose significant value But the fear to the upside is something else Let's just say someone who is bought a high flying tech stock Maybe they bought it ten years ago and now it's become this outsized portion of their wealth And there's this fear to decide of well I know I should sell this but I don't want to incur any taxes or I know I should reduce my position but it's done so well for me the past ten years I'm fearful of missing out on future gains There are some people who are handcuffed because they're 401k matches their contribution in company stocks So they've got a big position when we're talking about a percentage of stock in your portfolio How much is too much Well whether it's company stock or an individual stock I would recommend limiting that exposure to 5% of your overall net worth The circumstances like enron they are rare It's really not worth the risk There's no need for it What if your company matches in company stock and you as long as you're working for that company you can't diversify as much as you would like to how do you balance Well certain plans they allow for the liquidation of company shares It's usually not something that you can do on a daily basis but at various points in the year whether it's an esop whether it's within a 401k plan I'm not saying it doesn't exist but I have not encountered a plan that does not permit for periodic liquidation along the way Do you recommend that people think about giving away their shares I think that would be a really good way to both deal with tax implications And also the emotional piece of it right Like if you can't stomach selling off what grandma gave you you can gift it makes you feel good all around and also saves you on taxes Definitely You're absolutely right I mean if you're a gift anything usually the most efficient asset class to gift is a appreciated stock You know a great vehicle to use would be something like a donor advised fund where you can take a certain amount of shares It essentially shifted into this donor advised fund The funds are still managed and you're not incurring any tax implications meaning you haven't technically sold the stocks And you get the tax write off for making the gift and then once it's in the donor advised fund it's then sold generally it's invested in a broader pool of investments more diversified And then you have greater flexibility as to when and how much you can gift to the charity or.

"You all of us here, it Edelman Financial engines are shocked, aghast, infuriated and very deeply saddened at what occurred. And we pray that there is no lasting adverse consequence or future threat to our republic and our democratic way of life. The year just ended was the most challenging any of us have faced, and that's saying something, considering most of the folks listening right now have lived through Vietnam. Watergate. Nixon's resignation. The 19 seventies oil embargo, but Iran Contra affair, the Iraq war and the horror of 9, 11 and Justus were exiting the very difficult 2020. With high hopes for 2021 vaccines on the way we found ourselves witnessing domestic terrorists storm our capital, threatening to kill our nation's leaders and destroy the very essence of our country. More than 50 law enforcement officers who are protecting the people inside the building were injured and Capitol police officer Brian Sick Nick was killed. He died protecting the sacred halls. That represent our nation's liberty and the people's servants who work there and our hearts and prayers go to officer sick. Nick's family. There are so many words to describe what we all witnessed the videos and photos of the events were simultaneously shocking, revolting, disgusting, unfathomable. Inconceivable and incomprehensible. Wanton rioting against both our seat of government, the very seat created by the people for the people and of the people. And members of the media with camera equipment destroyed, forcing reporters and crude a run for their lives, all a blatant rejection of our cherished First Amendment. My senseless, immature and selfish my way or no way in Brussels drunk and they're wildly distorted extremist fantasies was all in embarrassment. All Americans, and the display they presented to the world was unforgivable. And let's admit it. Some folks were simply there for a party to rebel in their rebellion, egged on by the so called leader of our nation who clearly cares farm or about himself. Than anyone else. Every one of those insurgents must be brought to justice. Equally important, given that this crowd did not arrive unexpectedly is that investigations must be thorough to explain why our capital was left so undefended and vulnerable that too. Was unconscionable. And perhaps the most unsettling aspect of the entire escapade, a footnote hidden by the tear gas, the riot police and the National Guard. Was the fact that thousands of protesters were prevented from doing what our great nation allows, indeed encourages protesters to gather peacefully and defiantly to express their opposition to government events, policies and actions that they believe are contrary to our way of life, even those who disagree with the protesters claims. The presidential election was flawed or even rigged, must agree that the protesters have the right to express their views and to seek redress from their fellow citizens who represent them in Congress. It is shameful that the rioters terminated the ability of the protesters to express their views. And, ironically, sadly, the one result of the rioting is that the protesters, voices have been silenced their wishes buried. What makes America great is our ability to express dissent to consider opposing views and to reach resolution. The actions of some on Wednesday were in direct opposition to these hard fought principles, and we cannot allow those anarchists to prevail. The fact that events could decay so deeply and so rapidly remind us of the importance of remaining diligent and not allow us to drop our guard or become cavalier or complacent. And that perhaps Is the best segue way to what I had wanted to talk with you about today. Review of 2020 and a look ahead to 2021. 2020 Was the first ever case shaped recovery. No one correctly predicted events or outcomes of the year. A year ago, Wall Street analysts predicted that the S and P 500 would grow about 5%. Nobody predicted covered 19, and when it hit the Wall Street consensus was that the stock market would end the year lower than where it started. Nobody predicted that the stock market would end the year on an all time high. SNP was up 18% for the year. With interest rates pushed down to all time lows. The bond market gained 7% as well. Here's been called the Everything Rally, because, well, pretty much everything showed gains every asset class. It's all wonderful news if you own investments, and you held onto them throughout the whole year. But sadly, only half the country invests in the stock market. That means half the country did not profit from last year. And tens of millions of Americans fell backward. Suffering loss of pay through furloughs or outright layoffs, losing health insurance in the process. And all this is nothing compared to the suffering of the ultimate tragedy. More than 360,000 Americans dying from Cove. It's so far Making the pandemic, the number one cause of death and 2020, surpassing even cancer, and millions more fell ill often seriously. The impact on the sick and their families. It's all hard to fathom, and the pressures that is placed on our nation's health care workers that's beyond comprehension. A number of our clients have passed and we share their family's grief and we mourn their loss is My own mom, You might recall her visits to my radio show over the years she passed in October from complications of Cove. It Mom was 93 living in a nursing home, and she is sadly, a covert statistic. I pray your family is spared these experiences. And those who have been spared are both fortunate and few Total household debt rose by trillions of dollars last year. The number of people who are now food in secure more than doubled to 23% of U. S households. One out of four More than half a million people became homeless because of Cove. It Our own research here, it Edelman Financial engines found that 26% of workers withdrew money from their retirement savings accounts in the first six months of the pandemic, and 40% of them didn't even really need the money themselves. Instead, they withdrew money so they could give it to family members and friends.

Retirement in America in 2020

"Happy to bring onto the program. Dr Ken Dike Wall, the founder and CEO of age wave. Can just keynoted, the financial planner retreat that we held here at Edelman financial engines last week. This time, of course, was done. Virtually Ken's clients include half the Fortune 500. He received the American Society on a Jing's award twice. He's one of the 35 most influential thought leaders in the financial services industry, according to investment news. Ken. Thank you so much for coming back on the program record is always great to be with you. Now. The reason that I asked him to come on is because of something can said at our retreat. That I've heard. Can you say that several times you and I have known each other for 20 years. I've seen you speak more times than I can remember. You're one of my favorite public speakers. And you said something again in this event, but this time it finally hit me and it got me thinking you gave the following statistic as part of your conversation with us. You said every year in America. We produce about four million babies. And we are also producing about 20 million caregivers. Now that statistic itself is shocking five times as many people are caring for elders as they are for babies. That was really your point reflecting the aging society, right? That was the point you were making. Yes. But it got me thinking it's even worse than that, isn't it? Because when you have four million babies that doesn't mean four million new moms, lots of mom's air having their second or third baby. Which means we're not producing four million new moms were producing Maybe one or two million new moms versus the 20 million new caregivers. The dispersion is even worse than the statistic itself. Suggests, isn't it? Yeah, it's something that sort of off the radar, but it's not off the radar. I'm sure for all of your listeners because nearly every one of us is touched by this in our life, you know, looking after a mom or a dad or a spouse or brother or a sister. It's become a major part of life now and There's a couple of valuables and erected, really pull it together. First, we a cz, you know, and your listeners know we're all living quite a bit longer than humans have ever lived before. The life expectancy in the beginning of the 20th century was 47. Today. It's about 79. But by the way, I'll also tell you that there are 33 countries in the world that have a higher life expectancy than we do. We are very middling when it comes to longevity. But the really interesting piece of it is what's called health span. So our health span doesn't seem to be matching our lifespan. What I mean In the United States. On average, we spend about 10 years sick at the end of our lives, and sometimes we can even spend years dying. Now what that does is, it creates an entire segment of our population. Turning that suffering for whom Our health care system has not done a good job preventing illness or disease but also causes family members. Tohave tow walk away from their jobs, their take every Tuesday afternoon off or relocate. In order to look after either their spouse or their mom and dad and the numbers are enormous. You mentioned 20 million new ones last year, but all in is over 40 million elder caregivers right now in America. And that number can on ly get bigger, right? Yeah, it's going to get bigger and a little more complicated, and I'll explain this. First of all, one of the major variables here has to do with the relation between Men and women and let me explain in America. The average woman who's partnered with a man has a man whose 2.5 years older than her. That's the average right now. The women live five years longer than men. So what usually happens then, At the end of one's life, the mangroves, Il begins to falter. The wife will put everything inside and care for her maid for her loved one. He dies, she might be emotionally depleted. They might even be financially depleted because they perhaps didn't have the resources. Handle what happens when someone is ill. But then she's going to live another 7 to 10 years. Who's going to care for her now for boomers. Now I'm a boomer, and I think you are, too. When our parents were having us. They were averaging four kids each, so the greatest generation in the silent generation had a lot of kids. And they were kind of close at hand. Boomers only averaged about two kids each and about almost 20% of the boomers had no kids at all. And so what happens is when we enter into our later years. Who's going to care for us? And so there's gonna be more of a caregiving crunch, which means at home care industries. They're goingto surge. More and more people are going to seek out housemates. More and more. I think we need to put pressure on the medical system and our scientific systems. Because if we could knock out diseases like Alzheimer's, if we could wipe out I know that's something you're committed to if we could wipe out some of the really nasty diseases of the later years. Then we wouldn't have so many older people suffering and therefore we wouldn't have such a need for caregivers. So we've got to get the lifespan and the health span to be more in sync exactly. So this is something that is as fundamental is a gets from a financial planning perspective what we were now referring to as life planning to help people realize what your future is likely to hold, and you've got to think about it in terms of your intergenerational aspects of your family. How many Children do you have? How many of them can you rely on either because of proximity because of willingness because of financial wherewithal to be able to be a caregiver to you, And if you have suspicions that that's not going to be available to you for any of the above reasons you need to start thinking about alternative ways that you can get the care that you're going to need and not just you, but also for your spouse. Right. And another thing that's happened, Rick is it during this horrible covitz situation? 46% of all the deaths have occurred in nursing homes and still nursing facilities. And they're probably not completely to blame because they housed some of the most struggling elders by half of whom have Alzheimer's and dementia. But what happened as a result of that Is that a whole lot of people are saying to themselves, man. I don't think I want to be in a nursing home. Well, okay, then. Then you need to sit down with your financial planner and make sure you've got some resources or talk to your family. So that you could be looked after the comfort of your home in the way you want to be looked after without having to worry about being parked in a nursing home can thank you so much for raising this issue it is. I think something that we're not giving a lot of thought of. We've got an election coming up in a few days. We have the midst of the covert crisis in front of us. Andi. It's very difficult for people to look beyond the here and now given what our nation is facing imminently to looking ahead 5 10 20 years into our financial future, but it's extraordinarily important that we do so especially in the context of the election because it's our nation's leaders who were about to send or return to Washington. That are going to be key for figuring out the public policies necessary to help protect tens of millions of aging Americans over the coming couple of decades. Exactly. Ken Dike. Well, thank you so much for mentioning this your book. As I mentioned what retirees want. It's hugely popular already hitting all the bestseller lists. You're subtitle really says it all, though, about what your new book What retirees want is all about. Subtitle is a holistic view of life Third age, and that's a lot of what I'm trying to put forward in this book for our grand parents when they reach retirement age. Had a couple of three years before their batteries were out today, most of us we had 60. We have another 30 years in front of us and trying to figure out how to make sure we can fund those years and also have a great time during that stage of our life, and maybe even make some great contributions. I think it's going to be the challenge of the future. So I encourage you to pick up a copy of Ken's brand new book What Retirees Want Available Booksellers everywhere. Ken Dyke, Wild founder and CEO of Age wave. Thanks so much Kan for being back here on the program. Stay healthy. Stay safe, Rick. Thanks.
