And I'm going to let you know that I had a reader last week for my mailbag column on S .I. com, send it an email and said, when is Marchand's next appearance? So here we go. You made someone happy. Thank you that person. You made someone happy by coming on today. Let's start with this. A lot of media news to get to. Have you heard anything from ESPN or do you have any intel about how they feel about the last two weeks? How the staggered Monday Night Football doubleheader has gone? Because I've gotten a lot of emails and tweets about it. I'm sure you have as well. Yeah, I haven't talked to anybody specifically about how they feel about it. I mean, it is an NFL decision. ESPN is not in control of how those games are scheduled. Maybe they have some say, but it's the NFL decision. Yeah, I don't like it. Actually, in our podcast with John, it was my who's down this week. And the reason I just feel like I kind of said this on our part, it's too it's like having two quarterbacks and you have none. Right. And now if you have Joe Montana and Steve Young, there are two awesome games. Maybe that'd be better. But I just find my attention split and I don't know. And even at like halftime, I wouldn't recommend you go to the other game. Like I get what they're trying to do there, but it's not the NCAA tournament. And usually it's in like the second quarter, third quarter. So I personally don't think it really works that well. Now, I think they want to avoid I'm not positive, but I think they want to avoid that 10 30 late window. We used to get the Monday night and you get the, you know, crazy crew, either Chris Berman or Golick and Greenberg, you know, some of those crews back in the day. They probably don't want that late night game where, you know, you're losing that East Coast audience if it gets too late. But I don't know. I don't think this necessarily works. See, I like it. And what are the tweet? What are the tweeters say? Most people seem to not like it. Yeah. And why do you like it? The more the merrier. Give me as much football as possible. If I can watch eight games at one o 'clock on Sunday and four or five games at four o 'clock on Sunday, I can handle two games on Monday night. So, you know, I have two TVs. I put one game on each TV and two is better than one for me. That's just how I feel. Yeah, I've been a little running around these last couple of Mondays when this happened. So I may be a little bit, you know, my opinion skewed a little bit by that. It hasn't just been like I'm just chilling and watching, been running around a little bit. So perhaps that's, you know, maybe I could be swayed. I will say, you know, I don't know. This is a whole separate discussion. I would love to know your take on this, but I always feel like it's a little tough sometimes to criticize people in this podcast when I also have to book this podcast. So I try to be careful. Yeah, I notice you're very soft. That's what you're trying to say. Sometimes. So I'm sure this guy will never come on again, but they gotta do better than Chris Fowler on the secondary game. Just not, it's just not working. Chris is not a great play -by -player. Right. He was a great host, studio host. Can I say one thing? Yeah. He's on tremendous tennis. Like I watch the U .S. Open every single day. I think he's great on tennis. It's football where it's just something feels off. Well, tennis is also slower. And like you look at people who do really well at the slower sports. Like, you know, Jim Nantz is better than Chris Fowler, but Nantz is really his best thing is golf. And I think he's an OK NFL play -by -player. And at the end of his college basketball run, he was definitely, I don't know, OK is probably, you know, he was OK there as well. And I think if you look at Fowler and his history, now he's been doing play -by -play for a while now. And he has gotten better. Like when he first started on the number one crew, I mean, if I were covering it then, that would not, I probably would not have been that kind. Because he has gotten better, but it's not really good enough. And he's the rare case, I think with Herb Street, that Herb Street makes him better. Usually it's the play -by -player who makes the analyst better. And yeah, I think you're right. And I also think, you know, in fairness to Fowler, you know, ESPN put that crew together. They replaced Levy there and they had a year or two under their belt together as a team. And, you know, not the full team, but him and Riddick, Levy and Riddick, and then Jadolowski. And I think they kind of don't, they underestimate chemistry. It takes time to build it up. And so I think that hurts. And he just, he's a college guy too. It's hard just to come into the NFL. I know he, you know, he's talked how hard his schedule is with the U .S. Open. And then, you know, doing a game a couple days later. And then doing a college. And so, you know, that's hard. And so, yeah, he's not a tremendous play -by -player. To me, this is just me, it felt like when ESPN gave him that gig, it was more about ESPN trying to impress the NFL. Like, look, we have our number one college game. Like you had said earlier, the secondary Monday night game for years was, you know, Golic and Greenberg and Chris Berman with a cast of character. Rich Ryan did it one year. I think this is ESPN trying to say to the NFL, because now they have a Super Bowl and they have this big contract. And, you know, they brought in Buck and Aikman. Like, we're serious, we're going to take our, regardless of what you think about Fowler, he's their lead college guy. So, I feel like they're like, oh, look at us, we're putting the lead when, you know, that. Yeah, I think they screwed up and I think they know they screwed up. I think that they ended up shifting who was in charge of the NFL. It was Stephanie Drewley. And they moved her off the NFL after, you know, I think that didn't help her cause in terms of staying on the NFL. I think they were satisfied with Levy. He was a good guy, which they value. After they brought in Joe Buck, he was very gracious. You know, Levy's a very good hockey guy, especially studio host. I thought he could have, you know, could have been the pregame show on Monday Night Football. He's in, again, not their, in my opinion, they had other people who are better play -by -players for football, but it was good. Like, so, yeah, I don't think it was to impress the NFL. They got Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. They got the Mannings. I mean, they spend, they're spending 50, 60 million dollars a year on their booths. Like, I don't think the second team booth is gonna, you know. If anything, I think it was, there was a thought before Buck and Aikman that Fallon and Herb Street might get the NFL. Might get Monday Night Football. Might get the potential Super Bowl. And then this is kind of a carrot since they didn't get it. But I'd argue, and I even talked to Chris Fowler about this. So, I don't know if this is the case. I just don't know if, I mean, Chris Fowler does the national championship. He does the biggest college game every week for Disney. I can't, like, I get it. Maybe he wanted to do NFL. But is this really gonna satisfy him because you're doing a second game, which generally aren't that great? I don't, I don't see that long -term, personally. And I think also, strategically, if I'm ESPN, I'm putting a young play -by -player. Now, Joe Buck, we both think it's great. Like, he and Ian Eagle are the best two play -by -players going right now. And, um, but, Joe Buck's contract's up in a couple of years. If I'm ESPN, and I, you know, I think they'll probably re -sign Joe Buck, and they should. That said, he makes a lot of money. And, you know, I would be saying, who can I develop? What young guy can I develop? So when I go into that negotiation, I really have somebody who's on the rise. And I can say, hey, look, you don't want this, you know, the 15 million a year? Then we'll go here, you know? But if you start demanding, I'm not saying this is going to happen, but, demanding even more and more money, I'd want an option. I don't think they've created an option. They've actually put somebody in that spot who they've already said they'd rather spend 15 million dollars on Joe Buck than have Chris Fowler as the lead play -by -player. So, I just think negotiation -wise, and strategically, in terms of saving money, it wasn't a great decision. Yeah. I don't understand the insistence on the three -person booth, either. They had Fowler, Greasy, and Riddick. Excuse me, excuse me. Levy, Riddick, Greasy. Now it's Fowler or Lofsky, Riddick. To me, that, and, Fowler's used to a two -person booth with Herb Street. They have Buck and Aikman, which is a two -person booth. I don't understand the insistence on the three -person booth. It's just, for football, it just, I don't get it, but, that's just my - It complicates, it over -complicates it. Yeah. And like you said, chemistry. I think it's much harder to develop a chemistry with three. I mean, you know, the local Mets situation is different with Gary Cohn, Ron Darl - Is it in baseball, is it football? What three men, can you name - I mean, I guess back in the old Monday Night Football days, there were three men booths that had - Yeah, Collinsworth and Aikman with Buck that one year. Yeah, one year it lasted, you know. So, I don't know. But, there's no more staggered double -headers. The next one is week 14, and both games will start at 8 -15. I think that's the one that's going to piss a lot of people off. But, that's a long way down the road. You got the two TVs. Yeah. I asked you if ESPN, how they feel about Monday Night Football. Anything you've heard about how they feel about their new partnership with Pat McAfee. I mean, it's early, but they're bullish on it. I mean, they've kind of handed the keys to the network to McAfee. I mean, you can't - it's kind of like Stephen A. now. You can't really turn on ESPN almost every day except basically Sunday without seeing Pat. And so, you know, I think initially the ratings weren't that good. I think they got a little better in terms of the TV ratings. I think that kind of makes some sense because if you think about it, he was a YouTube show. Yeah, he's got to play for TV. Yeah, and he's still a YouTube show. Well, it is a play for TV because they think that they had Max in there before. They think that the ratings will be high enough that they'll be able to charge more for the ad rates. I guarantee you the money they'll make off of McAfee on social media and YouTube will be 8 billion times more than the money they made off Max Kellerman on social media. Oh, 100%. No, you're right. No, you're right. There's no doubt about that. And look, they want to get, I will say this, like, does it work? I think a lot of times when companies make big moves, you know, big time moves, a lot of times they make those moves when the person's kind of towards the end, you know, they got McAfee on the rise. Like, you know, we, you know, you and I have been aware of McAfee for years now, but he's really like, you know, here, I don't think he's at the plateau, you know, where most people go up and then they plateau and then they go down. He's at, he's still, I think, going up and then maybe the plateau is on the horizon and you can plateau for 20, 25 years if you have the right attitude and personality and just have the right act. So that's where I think that makes a lot of sense as a bet because it's not, I'll hit one close to home, Rick Riley leaving ESPN. I mean, leaving SI for ESPN where, you know, Rick Riley is one of the great columnist ever, but at that point, you know, whatever, maybe it was the internet, I don't know exactly. It just didn't really work as well at ESPN as it did at SI. And so I just think they've done that and that's kind of, you know, teams do that in sports and I think sometimes networks do that. And so I feel like signing McAfee in his mid -30s is kind of like signing a baseball free agent who's in his mid -20s and I think that's what you want to do as opposed to getting a, signing a 35 -year -old and, you know, thinking they can still play, you know, like, I don't know, like a Josh Donaldson, maybe trading for someone like that, Jimmy. You see what I did there? I don't need reminders of the horrific Yankee season. I just did that on purpose. I don't need that. My head was going, who am I going to say? All right, yeah, Josh Donaldson, but it was a treat. Just a, yeah, you want me to say Brian Cashman should be fired. It's amazing too, they replay that. I didn't know this was going to be the situation going into it, but they replay the show as soon as it's over, I think, on ESPN 2 and then they replay it at night on maybe ESPN News or one of their, what you said about if you're going to put on one of the ESPNs at any point in the day, you're going to see Pat McAfee. Yeah. So that's good for him. Like I, you know, people feel like - But I also think, ESPN has to be, they have Aaron Rodgers on their air every week. It's a news making thing that's on their air every week. They've got Nick, he's got Nick Saban on his show every week. Yeah. That's a news making thing every week. I would think ESPN has to be, forget the numbers because the numbers, I think, will be there. It's still a new thing. You have, the ESPN audience is older, the McAfee audience is younger, it might take some, but I would think ESPN just on the brand and the cachet of that show has to be thrilled. I think so. I mean, but if you talk, like I have, again, I'll probably make some calls here in the near future, but so I haven't talked specifically with anybody about that. But generally speaking, when these things first start, everyone loves it. So then we'll see. Again, I'm not saying, I could see it either way. Like, you know, McAfee has not really stayed at any of these, throughout any of these contracts he's had. So that's something to watch. Maybe this one he does, but that hasn't been the case previously. So that is something. I think the fact that he's on game day has to help the relationship there a little bit with ESPN. Here's the thing about McAfee. If you're managing him, in my opinion, and it's like Casey Jones, the former coach of the Celtics, was known for just throwing out the ball and telling McHale, Parrish, and Bird to go play, Dennis Johnson. At least that's how I remember as a kid. That was his reputation. And I think McAfee is sort of like that. Just give him the ball, let him do his thing. He's not looking to, you know, for some strategy. Let's, you know, triangle offense. He's not looking for that. He's looking for, let me do my thing. I know what I'm doing. And the thing about McAfee is he's very smart. Like, I know he plays this, like, he's not smart thing. It works very hard. He works hard and he's very smart. He's very savvy. He acts as if, like, you know, maybe he's, you know, just a dumb jock. But he understands the media business very well. We need, we need to discuss the Kelsey Taylor Swift thing because I actually think it's a legitimate media story. If Fox is going to get these increase in their demographics of the female audience, the young people, the NFL has gone all in on this thing. I mean, they changed their Twitter header to, like, a Taylor Swift thing. They're putting out Travis Kelsey Swiftiest plays on their social media. He's gained, I guess, a ton of followers, the jersey sale. Let me start with this. How did you think Fox handled it on Sunday when she was in the stadium? Do you think they overdid it? Do you think the fact that they had an unwatchable game takes them off the hook? What was your take on the Chiefs -Bears on Sunday when she was there? I think the second part, and I wouldn't take them off the hook, but I think the second part, you have an unwatchable game that you had to switch most of the country out of because it was so non -competitive, that you have Taylor Swift there, it's a big deal. And, you know, there's a lot of Taylor Swift fans who are football fans, a lot of non -Taylor Swift fans who weren't watching that game, but it was a talking point, right? Like, I saw Taylor Swift in the concert this summer, but that was kind of - Look at you! Yeah, how do you like that? Look at you! You couldn't even get tickets. Big shot. Where'd you get tickets? My daughter's friend just won the lottery. No shenanigans. Oh, really? Tickets were $235 each, which is still a lot of money, but not, like, $1 ,000. And it was just kind of happenstance, how I ended up going. I was going to say, if your daughter's friend got tickets, how did you end up at the era's tour? I mean - Were you, like - It's just a long drive to get to the metal lands, didn't want them driving back. They're older, they can drive, but at, you know, one o 'clock in the morning from Taylor Swift, so - But you were in MetLife and watched the show. Yes. Friendship bracelets? Well, you want to know something funny? This is a good one. So, my daughter's friend said to me, do you want a - do you want a jewel? And I'm like, no, no, no, I'm okay. Thinking she's saying a jewel, like a jewel, smoke. But she was saying, like, to, like, get bedazzled, a little jewel, which I would have taken. So later, I was like, I told my daughter, I said, but your friend, she said she asked me if I wanted a jewel. She's like, no, no, she didn't say you wanted a jewel. She said, do you want a - a jewel to put some ju - you know. Right. I didn't have any bracelets, but I was into - I liked Taylor Swift. I wouldn't go again. I kind of felt bad being there, because there's people who give their left arm to be there. But it was - look, she is an unbelievable performer. I mean, it was - you could - first of all, I liked some of her songs. Secondly, the level of performance. It was just, you know, it was an A+. I mean, that - that - and that is something, even if you didn't like her music, you can appreciate it. And also, I appreciate it if I had to go to the bathroom. Easy pass right in there. No one. Right. No one's leaving their seat except for people like you who aren't in it. Yeah, and especially, yeah, and more skewed women.

A highlight from The Debut of NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube
"Welcome everyone to SI Media with Jimmy Traina. I am your host, Jimmy Traina. Thank you so much for listening. Bonus episode, bonus podcast on this Monday after the first Sunday of the NFL season. We had the debut of NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube. It was on DirecTV for like 25 years. Now it's on YouTube. And Sal Licata, who joins me every week for Train of Thoughts from WFAN in New York and SNY TV in New York, joins me where we share our experiences with Sunday Ticket on YouTube, getting it set up, what we thought of it, full review, full breakdown of everything, what you need to know about it, what their differences are if you have YouTube TV, if you have cable, full breakdown of everything all related to NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube. That's what this pod is with Sal. It's like a full -blown Train of Thoughts. So listen to Sal and I discuss it, come back later in the week for a regular episode. If you missed any recent episodes, check them out. Last week, Julian Edelman was on. He was great. Just joining Fox had some great Brady and Belichick stories. Charles Barkley was on recently, Peter Schrager, Chris Russo. Check all those pods out. Subscribe to SI Media with Jimmy Traina. And this is one of two episodes this week. All right, let's get to it now with Sal. Full episode here on NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube. All right here right now on SI Media with Jimmy Traina. Welcome everyone to SI Media with Jimmy Traina. Thanks for listening. Bonus episode this week. This will be one of two. We're taping this on Monday after the first week of the NFL season, the debut of the new Sunday Ticket on Yahoo, on Yahoo. What a dope. On YouTube, on YouTube, I had to get on with Sal and we're just gonna riff about our Sunday Ticket experiences in week one. Sal, how are you? I'm great and I'm excited to have this conversation with you because we've had this many times over the years at dinner, at our houses, whatever, discussing this exact thing. And we both, I know, had great experiences yesterday. So I'm looking forward to talking about it with you. Well, let's start with this. There are many, many train of thought segments on this podcast over the last three months where you said you were not going to get Sunday Ticket. You were not going to get it. You're just focusing on the New York teams. And then I got the text message. Let's see here if I can find the text message. Even, even early, I noticed you were starting to cave a little bit earlier this week. Actually, 9 .34 a .m. on Sunday, I'm still on the fence. And then at 10 .45 a .m., the text came in from Sal. I'm in. It's like Michael Jordan returning to the NBA. I know. I thought about writing to you. I'm back. I was thinking about it as the week went on. I told you, like, because of the lineup with the playing Giants Sunday and the Jets playing Monday, that to me made it worse. Or you were saying, oh, well, you're going to have the national games. Yeah. But knowing that I didn't have to watch those games at that time made it more appealing for me to get the get the Sunday ticket. So I kind of thought I'd be going that way. And then Sunday morning I was like, fuck it. Let me just get this thing in. It's worth the money. Let me see what it's all about. And is it great. So so let me do a little preamble here before we get into it, because I want to say this and let me know if you agree, disagree. But before we even discuss this, I think what we need to establish is this. How you feel about Sunday ticket, whether it's direct TV, YouTube, the changes or it's it's going to depend on how you watch football, number one, and it's going to depend on what services you have. Now, for instance, Sal has direct TV. I have I don't have direct TV. Oh, oh, you have optimum cable. Correct. OK. Optimum cable. You were scamming the direct TV Sunday ticket all these years. That's right. All right. I did have direct TV. Right. And this is an important part of it. I don't want to gloss over it. And then I moved into the city and I was not allowed to get direct TV. So what they did was allow me to stream Sunday tickets. So I have been able to stream Sunday ticket for several years. So whether you have optimum like Sal, I have Verizon, Fios. Some people have direct TV. Some people don't have any cable. They have streaming services. That's a factor in all this. And then the other thing that I think added so much confusion over the last couple of weeks and is early yesterday there's also this huge Sunday ticket is different based on whether you have YouTube TV or you're just using YouTube. Now, Sal and I both have cable, so we're just using YouTube. If you have YouTube TV, the experience is different. So there's a lot of layers to this. It's very convoluted. I'm going to do my best to try to break it down for you now. So the biggest thing is this. If you have YouTube TV, you're good to go with Sunday ticket with your in -market and out -of -market games. You have nothing to worry about. If you don't have YouTube TV, like Sal and I, you're not getting the local market game. So on Sunday here in New York, Steelers, Niners was on Fox at one o 'clock. Browns, Bengals was on CBS at one o 'clock. Those games are not part of our Sunday ticket packages on YouTube. If you have YouTube TV, they were. So if you don't have YouTube TV and you just have YouTube, you have to have more than one television. I think if you want to watch all the games, if you care about one team, you're fine. You really do need to have two TVs because what I did was I had on my big TV, the multi -view with the four games. And on the second TV, I had one of the local games because that's how you have to do it. So, so far I weigh in on what I've said so far. Yes. Okay. Question here. Number one, if I had YouTube TV, do I then get the local games as part of the game mix? Yes. Oh, shit. See, so I may consider then, I don't know if I'm realistically going to do it, but that to me is like the number one thing that's been missing forever on the prior service. And now that I cannot have, because like you, I like to have the game mix and the four box grid, but it automatically takes out whatever local game is on. And I hate that. So here in New York, we could not get a four game multi -view that had either Steelers Niners or Browns Bengals in it on Sunday. Cause those are in market games. So there was no multi -view whether it was four games, three games that had those games in it. If you had YouTube TV, those games were part of the multi -view. So you, so you, so you would consider getting rid of optimum and getting YouTube TV. Well, I didn't know that that was the case. I mean, I probably, truth be told, I'll never be a cord cutter, but if I were to get it in addition, it might be worth it at least just for the season. Now I screwed up because I bought the ticket. Although I guess you have this period now where it's kind of, um, you know, the tree trial period and I can make a decision at the end of the week, but, uh, I'd rather than go back and get the ticket much cheaper if you buy YouTube TV, I think. Right. You know, YouTube TV is like $80 a month. It's like a cable service.

"I Verizon FiOS is superior to Optimum cable at least out here on Long Island. I can't I had DirecTV for 20 years Switched to FiOS couldn't be happier. I think FiOS is fantastic One of the things I'm happy about which we'll get into is FiOS offers YouTube is like a channel You don't have to like have your smart TV or Apple TV like you can click a channel to go to YouTube Which will be huge during Sunday ticket, but I am a FiOS customer and it's funny. I texted a friend of mine in This but I don't want to use his name because it wasn't known there would be a public conversation business sports media He's been on this podcast and I had he had tweeted about the spectrum. He was having issues that it was blacked out. I said Can you in your area get FiOS because if you can you should switch and he said his wife doesn't want to switch For some other reasons, so he's stuck with spectrum and he's blocked out of ESPN But I would just say if you can switch to FiOS in your area switch to FiOS if you have spectrum But that's what what on earth could those reasons be for not wanting to switch his life His wife wants a certain channel that's only offered on spectrum Yeah, there you go because if Xfinity drops Big Ten Network I'm gone for whoever for whatever whatever else happens to have the Big Ten Network Even though Maryland isn't certainly isn't a college football powerhouse at least not yet anyway well, that's what's interesting about this is people want their teams and You know, your teams are gonna be on ESPN ESPN 2 during the college football season Monday Night Football Obviously the timing this was obviously planned out that it would happen right before college football started in the US Open, correct? Oh, yeah that's that's how ESPN has again ESPN is using a playbook that it is used for the past 25 years and it has all of its contracts and at a certain time that is going to be most beneficial to them and it goes it could Be for the college bowl games. It could be for the NBA playoffs it like and it continues to happen Okay, one of the things that I find really interesting about this real quick is a good just how Addicted we all have become to the cable business because you're you're saying you can't get ABC Well, ABC is an over-the-air station. Presumably it's it's available in every single House, I know that I took my antenna off the roof, you know decades ago I'm sure most other people have I would have a hard time I would have to google. How do I get? Access to to ABC even though it is Like even if you're in a market a charter market You should be able to watch ABC that's just putting a band-aid on the issue If you're a sports fan, you need more than just of course ABC CBS NBC that so I mean, yeah It solves a problem temporarily, but if you're a sports fan, you need ESPN. There's just no two ways about it So tell me What are they trying to set up here like what is what is spectrum one out of this so So it's less about what spectrum wants versus what ESPN wants to me I know There are reams of stories out there and they've agreed on price and spectrum wants access to some of the direct TVs Excuse me, ESPN's direct consumer products that you know, ESPN Plus and Hulu and Disney Plus But to me the the whole point of this battle is ESPN and Disney I we say ESPN because it really is just ESPN. I don't hear people crying over Disney Channel yet It's about ESPN and the and the and the games they need to decide whether or not charter is really willing to To just pretty much leave video and if they don't do a deal with Disney, they're leaving video Okay, explain something to me as it's someone who's really really dumb because you've you've used that phrase twice I read it in your column What do you mean by video? Like when you say video do you mean out of the cable business? Yeah, what do you mean? So basically what has happened? over the past probably 15 years or so ESPN kept getting bigger and bigger a rate hike so the so the cable operator so charter had to pay 20% increases per year the in order to carry ESPN and and and Those ended a while ago, but they still get increases on that The broadcasters saw that and they decided well we want to get paid because we were bigger than ESPN and so they have something called retransmission consent and and cable operators had to then pay Fox and CBS and NBC the ever-increasing Amount of money for this and eventually it's like hogs at a trough. Everybody was getting their money and now people are Abandoning cable to go to streaming we've talked about cord cutting every time I come on here Jimmy And so cable cable operators like charter are making less money from offering all those channels In fact, it's it's not quite a loss leader, but they're just they're not making a lot of money off of it And so they're like, why are we getting involved with with all of these negotiations with carrying ESPN? Especially when Bob Iger said that he's gonna take that ESPN channel and go direct-to-consumer in a couple of years Anyway, like and so there he's basically gonna create a competitor to charter. Why are we paying all that money for it? We can make so much more money off of broadband because we have no programming costs and off of wireless because we have no programming costs over there and will be a Better company that will be better liked by Wall Street Again, I mean, I know I sound like a broken record and people probably so tired of hearing me say this But like I just still don't under so let's say ESPN goes direct-to-consumer They're gonna charge you between 20 and 30 bucks for it, correct That's still to be determined. I don't know that I mean it's not gonna be less. It's not gonna be less I I think that you can look at what Ness encouraged in for its channel and and and use that it probably around $30 20, okay. So let's say let's say it's 25 just for argument's sake so you're gonna spend 25 a month for ESPN But you still need Fox you still need CBS and you still need NBC. So by the time you're done with everything You're gonna be paying what you paid for cable. I don't see how people don't see this. Am I on just another planet? No, I look I still subscribe to cable because I think it's the best value that we have out there But there could be a point to where like you're not gonna be able to you know, there could be a point where Charter decides we're not offering video anything other than like maybe the broadcast networks or anything But sort of like a real basic tier of video just for people that that want that Alright, so people talk about in the business. There's gonna be like what they say a rebundling So, you know everybody wanted to we want what we only what to watch what to pay for what we watch Well now they're gonna have to rebundle it in order to make it more cost-effective, right? Give me a time frame on when you see not the settlement. I'm just curious like you said this is a there could be a rebundling people said this is a reckoning between cable and and companies When do you see everything sort of change? Like do you think we're still a couple of years away from maybe? spectrum getting out of video like you said, I mean how Do you have any sort of timetable on when these major changes to the way we consume all this happens so most of the people I talked to believe that that ESPN and spectrum are gonna reach a deal This go-around that they're not gonna walk away this go-around these deals are typically about four years long four years from now When ESPN has already launched its direct consumer and when prices become untenable for the charters, I can see that happening. There's a In certain markets there are smaller Cable operators like there's one called cable one that already did away with with video It's like it's not I think it offers a real bare-bones video there and and they have basically very few subscribers and they're the darling of the cable industry because What they what they make on broadband is a clear profit what they make on wireless is a clear profit They don't have this added cost of the programmers for the you know for their video service Cable companies are looking at that. They're also looking at Dish Network, you know, we've talked about Dish Network and Charlie Ergin, you know He did away with the regional sports networks years ago and Everybody thought he was foolish cuz like, you know hardcore sports fans are gonna leave well, they did leave but he still kept enough and he's not he doesn't have those costs and he Like cable operators and and other distributors were looking at the profits and they were like, wow This is really working for him. That was a good decision for him So at some point it's gonna you know, the rubber ass hit the road. It doesn't mean ESPN's going away You can still get it from YouTube TV slink TV Hulu like you can still get them out a lot of different areas It's just saying that the cable operators are really coming to a point where they have to make a decision I mean you have any sort of numbers or any Intel on? People dropping spectrum since the blackout started of the channels A source of charter said it's not nearly as many as we would have expected and a source of ESPN says it's Way more than we would have ever expected It sounds so like you that this is more from what you're saying It sounds me like this is more of an ESPN thing than a charter thing charter spectrum. Um, no, it's a charter thing I mean, okay, so ESPN is up now You know Fox is gonna be up eventually although Fox doesn't really have a streaming service that to think of but you know, Paramount's gonna be up and CBS and NBC is gonna come up I mean, they're setting the table right now for for those types of deals All right. Let's move on to Sunday ticket on YouTube which happens in a few days Once I was I The NFL had a conference call. Yep. When was this last week last week two weeks ago? You're my sweet. You're my favorite on there We have Brad like Brian roll app who's like, you know the Head of all media at the NFL and you had you came on with a very Long Island specific question I loved it. It was my question. It was all about the game mix channel. Yeah. Yeah. Okay well, the first thing I thought was very interesting about that call was the NFL saying that they Will not release any subscription numbers. Mm-hmm We knew the subscription numbers when they were on DirecTV We did I Think that we didn't know those numbers though through the NFL They might be they might be pulling a little bit of a game here So I expect that we're gonna find out through through YouTube at some point now if you had Google's a public company So I I expect that that's not gonna be a problem to say, okay good Yeah, my I don't under again a lot of the questions I have come from people I talked to whether it's my readers whether it's Friends when it was on DirecTV They offered a game mix channel with eight the eight one o'clock games all on one screen. YouTube is not offering that When I asked on that call the NFL said that was a YouTube decision not an NFL decision and it's just like why would you? Take something, you know, why would you not offer that makes me like what would be a reason to not offer that? They might look DirecTV I know DirecTV had a lot of complaints but DirecTV had been doing Sunday tickets since 1996 I believe for is it 94 but uh And they knew how to do these things. It's it's not easy to do and sometimes yeah This is YouTube's first bite at this Apple. And so it's a big Apple It's a it's a very big Apple and so some I don't know the technical specifics of it, right? But I would I would I would think that putting eight different games on one screen is not the easiest Feet to accomplish in a streaming world and in the street and so, you know Is it something that YouTube could end up doing? Perhaps maybe YouTube, you know gets paid a little bit more for the different clicks and the different views and and it doesn't want to How this works out, but I do know that that What you should expect because it's a very first time. I mean Twitter is gonna be X I guess I should say is gonna be no no say Twitter. We say Twitter here. We don't say I noticed it's no longer a retweet. It's a repost when I want. It's a retweet. It's a retreat That fucking game that they're gonna be some hiccups they're just gonna be it's the very first time YouTube has a service that people really like and really want and so this is One when I when I look at things that I'm looking at for the NFL season I have I have the the YouTube Sunday ticket deal circled because like are those hiccups that can be rectified pretty quickly or are they hiccups that sort of like are Are tough. I mean I I just did a story Wednesday morning about Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and the NFL wants to have Sunday ticket down there and YouTube is unable to do it until November and so directive years like I Excuse me at the NFL tried to get DirecTV to to do it and YouTube was like no, they're not doing it We'll get it in November. So it's a we'll see how this plays. I agree with you I told a friend of mine this week I give it I the over-under on me leaving my house to go to a sports bar It's like 116 on Sunday and it's funny You saw you talk about Twitter because I would love to see the anarchy going on on Twitter But I am so locked into the games that I don't usually check Twitter during the one o'clock game So it's gonna be very interesting to see how they handle it. I Here's another thing Jimmy by the way, I'm looking for is on streaming There generally is a pretty big lag between the live games and and not and if you're watching Sunday ticket And you're trying to do social media I like my neck was I haven't circled right here the word latency. That was the next thing I was getting We're thinking alike. You picked up my question because here's the deal. So I have been with the US Open I When you do live betting for now, this is on cable on FiOS ESPN They're a solid 45 seconds behind Because on draft Kings when you try to live bet they're updating the score before the shots even happened With YouTube and the NFL in the streaming. I mean I could see them being like a full minute behind and I remember months ago when when YouTube first got the deal. This was maybe at the very beginning of the summer. I had reached out about The latency issue and they said we're gonna try to work on it or something like that like an off-the-record, you know I haven't heard a word about it and I I had latency written down to ask you if you've heard anything about I haven't heard energy, but I know I haven't heard anything about it. But like in terms of Storylines going forward. I mean that's that's a major one and that's not just dealing with YouTube and Sunday ticket like everything we just talked about with Charter and ESPN like if we're going to a streaming world What is that going to do with all these prop bets or these in-game bets? That that everybody is like saying it's gonna be the next big thing. I mean listen, that's a huge issue It's gonna be a huge issue on Sunday with with live betting in the NFL is a huge huge thing And I don't know how you're gonna be able to do it if you're on Sunday ticket I do think I mean one thing I will say is I probably talk about Sunday ticket way too much in terms of you know When I saw the DirecTV number, I think it was 1.2 million subscribers to Sunday ticket I would have thought it would have been a you know I mean, I think you're the one who told me this on this podcast once before It's really red zone. That is what really people That's red zone is what changed everything. I think if you didn't have red zone more people may have Sunday ticket Red zone is still probably What most people are into I must have been the one to say that because I was what I was going to mention next And the the NFL now is making red zone available for a fee If you get and if the NFL Plus app, so if you're if you're if you're a hardcore NFL fan you can either pay whatever I don't know off the top my head YouTube is charging or you can pay $20 a month and and check out the red zone on the app. It's a so It's It's a I'm shocked that they that that they did that to be to be frank I would bet money that there's a decent amount of people who were NFL Sunday ticket subscribers on DirecTV Who will not subscribe to YouTube just based on the reason of well, I'll just get red zone. I'll just get red zone Yeah, what we'll never know. We'll never know that number but I suspect I suspect that there are quite a few people that that would Be like that. Yeah. Yeah Is there anything else we should know about this Disney spectrum just see I it's interesting to me because I Thought at first it was just a New York thing and I didn't know how much I should discuss it But clearly it's around the country So it's I mean are you finding I I've been surprised by how many my of my readers and listeners have gotten in touch with In fact as we're taping this literally I just got a tweet as we're taping this Disappointed you've chosen not to use your voice to comment on the spectrum cable situation Which is adversely impacting many sports television customers. This is not my domain. I'm not into the business side of it So I don't I try not to just throw off an opinion and like I said if you can get FiOS get FiOS That's all I can tell you I you know So but is there anything else anyone should know about this before we wrap up that topic? I cover sports media This is the only story that I'm covering right now. It's it's all that matters because it is the Again You're gonna figure out where to get ESPN and in the past I would have suggested to people just wait Everybody has these these arguments. Sometimes it goes dark. They'll come back and if you go to YouTube TV Who's to say that they're not gonna have this this fight with ESPN and a couple years when that when that contract is up So I I always recommended sticking around this time. It's different and they're they're looking at these different metrics. In fact If you call up Charter to disconnect and you get through after waiting for an hour or two. They're gonna send you to two different Different providers they can say like look you can get ESPN, you know at YouTube TV or things along those lines So it's different like they they don't seem to mind Losing these video subscribers because again that their big profits are made on on other businesses not what not the If you go and subscribe to YouTube TV, but you remain a charter broadband subscriber They're gonna be happy, right? Well, that's the thing with fires you get it all in one shot See I had DirecTV and my internet was through optimum So I had to cancel both when I got files and optimum did not try to keep me as a broadband customer And then as soon as I did cancel and I got files then every day they were sending me stuff to keep me I'm like, well when I call to cancel you didn't try to keep me now you're mailing me stuff every day So which is the last thing I wanted to talk to you about before I let you go here And I appreciate because I know like I'm glad you told me that's all you're covering because I'm hearing a lot about it I'm just curious with the start of the NFL season Everyone knows I like to place a wager. I'm Taken aback by now. Listen, the branding is all over the place I'm not talking about the branding, but if you remember whatever it was three four seasons ago At this time of year every single commercial during every sporting event was for draft kings and fandom We don't really see the commercials. We see the branding which on the scrolls It's you know, this they're sponsoring the shows but the commercials are not as prevalent Where do we stand with the gambling? Sort of influx is it do you think companies are still trying to figure it out? Do you think it didn't become as big as people thought is it bigger than people thought? Where do we stand with all that stuff? Do you think I don't think we can say yet whether it's as big as people thought Or or not But I do think that there's a strategy moving forward where it's gonna be a part of the bottom-line telecast or it's gonna be the announcers are gonna be Talking about it more more openly like, you know, if it's a blowout game like oh well If they score a field goal, that'll get the over-under who knows what? So so that there are it has become more a part of the programming. So I do agree. We are seeing fewer ads as it pertains to Draft kings and fandom. They're still a very big ad category I mean, they're just not as big as as when they were starting up and what you're seeing instead is you're seeing That them becoming much more indoctrinated Especially in the pregame shows and the post game shows the studio shows a lot less with the on game Presentation because the NFL, you know, it still doesn't like that a ton But you're gonna see it on the I mean you see fantasy scores on the you know The bottom line and and you're gonna see a lot more of that and with the ESPN deal Where Penn split off from barstool and then Penn made the deal with ESPN What do we expect to see from ESPN in this with the with now that they're associated with the pen and the gambling? I'm in the minority here Jimmy, but I don't think we're gonna see a ton different thing ESPN already has gambling shows a gambling talk already is a big part of a lot of the studio shows Scott Van Pelt and the bad beats is you know, that is a viral video that goes out, you know Just about every night So I I don't think this is going to be a sign that he isn't ESPN is gonna ramp up on this I just think it's a sign that ESPN is now more willing to You know put its put its brand put its ESPN name on sportsbooks and you know collect and and it's more of a Money-making venture than a programming venture to me. Got it. Got it. All right, John. The NFL season is here from WFAN radio 10 to 2 Monday through Friday SNY TV in New York. My buddy salicata Sal ready to go I could hear the excitement in your voice that the NFL season is here. We've made it I could do without these less 95 degree days, which is putting a little damper on my mood, but Yeah, it's all season is here Global warming is real for sure. I mean the fact that it's 90 plus degrees in September in New York I want that full feel I want that crisp weather for football not this heat I mean I did too, but I'd be happy just if it was under 90 at this point. It's ridiculous Yeah, I know it is ridiculous. Have you ordered Sunday ticket yet? I Have not at this current moment now. I'm in a predicament here, you know, I'm a Falcons fan But even more than that, I love watching these games. I've always had Sunday ticket probably since 1999 or whatever But I want to focus on Jetson Giants problem is Jetson played on Monday and the Giants play Sunday night So, yeah, but I guess I might have to I might cave But you're gonna get four games locally in New York this week. Are you sure about that? 99.9% sure and you don't know one yet. Yeah. Yeah Browns Bengals on CBS at one Steelers Niners on Fox at one I'm pretty sure about those a hundred percent Bears Packers four o'clock Fox Eagles Patriots four o'clock CBS Interesting that we would get four but you week one and week 17 They do the double headers for both networks just for the first week in the last week I'm alright, so maybe I don't Go ahead you talk. I'm looking at my guide here to see if anything's yeah Maybe I don't need it then but if I want to watch the Falcons and Panthers What should I do because I'm kind of intrigued to what Atlanta could be this year. I don't know Ultimately, I'm probably gonna cave but I'll tell you this if you were to tell me that we can pick the game mix I'd be in knowing that we can't is a turn-off and also it's Distracting it is distract like during the Jetson Giants games I don't want to be distracted and I know if I have that ability. I'm going to want to put the games on The four games I gave you that is accurate. Those are the four games are getting locally in New York. Okay? But my thing is this so if the so if the Jets or Giants are playing at one o'clock You don't want to watch any other game. Is that what you're telling right? Correct? Yeah, I would I would I would I would have To hang myself. I can't do that. I can't watch one game Well, the problem is because I got so used to I used to be able to watch three at one time and then I got used to having six or so or however many up at a time and in reality when you have six games on you're not really watching any and I need to watch the Jets and Giants for my job now. Both of those teams are a lot of national games. So I could not Disagree with you more like I can watch three games at once. No problem. Right, but I'm saying three. Yes, six or seven. No You're gonna have you're not gonna have three game who you bullshitting you're gonna have the game mix on Right another TV plus an iPad you can have six games on I'm gonna watch every game But what happens is as the weeks go on you eliminate teams like by week four I'm not watching like the Bucks anymore. They're gonna be the worst team like and then you focus in on the good games I want to go old school though Because I used to when it first started watching just the Falcons and really nothing else and I knew more about them Than anything and now it's like yeah I just watch what's going on all across the league and I know a lot about the league and the results but He just I don't know. It's a different way to watch it. I want to try to go Okay, so I don't know so week two just looking quickly, yeah, you're gonna the Jets and Giants both played four o'clock week two That see that's a nightmare when they both play at the same time. So right off the bat you got an issue in week two Yeah, what am I supposed to do for that? Like I got multiple TVs, but you stop being a bitch and you watch both games. I Know but you can't watch both the way that you need to Just understand like yes you know, I'm Seriously for a second up four hours a day Monday through Friday Fucking two Jets and Giants fans who know their team better than anybody Like I can't be called my pants down So I like oh I didn't see that play because I was watching this game or got caught up in it That's the challenge that I have. It's a you'll be fine You'll be fine and I'm I mean, I'm just looking quickly I mean the Jets and Giants are all over prime time. It's I know leaveable So you think that makes more of a case for me to get it or not to go? I think it doesn't it makes a case not to because you're gonna get National games that aren't New York games when the New York teams are in primetime But I'm looking here like week five like week five for instance the Giants play the Dolphins at one o'clock So you're gonna be totally fine Not watching any of Raven Steelers at one o'clock. Yeah, I don't care What are the Jets that week? They play at four o'clock Okay, parkos Right. So two things that well three things number one gambling, right? So betting on these games I'm gonna want to watch the games that I bet on and I don't just go all this games on TV So I'll bet on that so that's gonna be an issue The other thing is that I like having the game mix and the other thing is that I like watching Atlanta like that's my team So even though I don't care as much I still do care a little bit Those are the three deciding factors if I get Every I feel like I'm dealing with my nieces everything you say contradicts yourself. I know You get it. You just want to watch Jets and Giants. You want to watch what you bet? You just want to watch Jets and Giants. You're a Falcons fan. You just want to watch Jets and Giants. You want the game mix? Which is it make up your mind? Doesn't sound like you're ready for the NFL season sounds like you got issues to work out So he so no, here's the issue that normally I would do it the way that I've always done it I don't think I can this year With the job that I now have that's the issue. So I have to change the way I watch this You don't think you can't you better figure it out. It starts in like three days. I told you I don't have it I don't have the the YouTube thing. So I'm okay. Do you? Do you have any week one wagers ready to go? No, I got to get my futures in it's on my list to-do list Not you know, I'm not futures week week one week one bad I haven't even really know I'm gonna bet the Jets and Giants haven't even really looked at the lines outside of that yet You have your picks already. It's Wednesday. Well, no, I've done. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I've been scouting for like three months for the first week The three games I know I Got it. We you just know it's so hard with week one, but good. I agree that You should definitely lay low in week one a hundred percent. I found three games I like so I'll probably bet like three or four games of the three games. I love in week one. I Love the Jets plus two and a half at home on Monday night against the Bills. I Think it's 9-11 Aaron Rodgers his first game. He is so motivated to stick it up the Packers, but like I think he comes out There at home. I'm not saying the season's gonna be as good as everyone, you know, everyone thinks the Jets gonna win the Super Bowl I'm not saying that's happened. I think I like him in week one in that environment Eagles minus four at New England. I I mean Mac Jones is not getting the job the Patriots offense Cannot keep up with the Eagles. There's just no way All right, the one thing they always do is seem to be competitive. I don't know what New England again I might is for minus four. That's not you know, I Do what's a third and The third game that I love is the Saints minus three at home against the Titans I don't Ryan Tannehill the Titans. I don't believe in them at all. I hate the things I think since I mean I hate the same so I'm rooting for you hate them in terms of betting them or hate them You mean you hate the team like what? I hate the team and I also that's irrelevant. I'm talking about minus three get your mind straight We're in a gambling world here. I also don't believe in car or the head I hate their quarterback head coach combination car and Dennis Allen. Let me ask you this. I love that day I love car over there cuz he was so miserable with the Raiders leisure. He's ready to go I love it minus three at home. Love it Who are they playing again The Titans Oh Titans. Yeah, I'll go with the Titans in that one Anyway, I know I'm thinking about how I'm gonna go about my Sundays here Like should I just bet the games that are on national TV? Is that what I have to do? The CW is your new home for college football We're coming to the CW all your favorite teams go Eagles go Tyco blue Devils all your favorite players I'm just excited to play football game with my guys. It's it's four different energy this year It's so much fun all ready to make history. We're excited to get to work 13 unforgettable games are you ready and it all kicks off Saturday put the pads on and get after it catch ACC football live Saturday on the CW the last time we spoke It was right after I had taped the Charles Barkley interview, oh, which was great I listened to that I loved it so much. He was great. Thank you. I appreciate that I have I just I have to take one minute just to thank everybody I had never gotten a reaction like that to a podcast before in my life. It was really Unbelievable. I mean I heard from so many people and just the most over-the-top Compliments and I do appreciate every single one of them, you know, so many people have said to me too About how comfortable Charles was and he talked to me like he knew me and like, you know It's freaked me out a little bit. Like why was he so good? I don't under like he's good on anything He does but like why like he came to play and like he doesn't know me like we never had spoken before like You know, it's a it's bizarre because it was so good Can I tell you my number one thought? After that, which I loved aside from like wanted to hang out with you and Barkley in the sports book in Vegas I get killed for that. The number one thing Was that man Michael Jordan must be some kind of fucking asshole because how could to your point? Charles Barkley who seems No night. He doesn't really know you and he's talking to you like you're his best friend. He was respectful He was kind the way he was talking about everything Not just the conversation with you my thought during it was like man Jordan must be such a dick Well, I believe that I don't know if I would say he's a dick or an asshole I would say he just holds grudges because if if the beef is strictly over Barkley saying Jordan didn't do a good job as the owner of the Hornets At some point Michael Jordan has to get over that like you just have to get over it But that's my point Charles Barkley seems like the three dinner guests thing or like he's he would probably be atop my list of Anybody in the world to hang out with period like Charles Barkley Dave Letterman, maybe one two in that ring I love and I've always loved them But I thought it was even more with with listening to it was saying to you and him together Like even more so maybe want to hang out with him and just loved His personality and how kind he is. I was like man, what kind of guy would be would So, I don't even know if I should tell this but I'll just give the backstory quickly because I think people like this stuff But let me just say it's it's funny how this all broke down. So I got his number. I Waited up maybe a week to text him Texted him This whole long thing. He wrote back right away said I know who you are I'm a fan of your work Let's do the podcast. Let's make it happen Wow, so then when I get that text back now, I'm now I've got to figure out how quickly do I pounce and say Let's do it right now, you know, like now you know so Wait a little while. I say how about next week now? This was on a Wednesday so He didn't write back Wednesday Thursday Friday Monday no response. So now it's Monday now if I don't have a book if I don't have a guest book by Monday I start to panic and get anxiety So I Left it alone. If he's balling me off. It happens all the time. Not a big deal booked Peter Schrager that week So Schrager comes on and we and we taped Schrager and I tape on Tuesday afternoon Sure enough Tuesday night Barkley text me How about we do the podcast tomorrow So now I don't want to be a dick to Schrager and I didn't want to do them together And I did I I really wasn't able to tape Wednesday. I had something going on That's why I usually tape Wednesdays, but I tape a trigger on Tuesday because what now listen, I had something going on Wednesday I could have you know, maybe made it work, but I had some thing going on So now I'm like now am I gonna now respond to Charles Barkley and say that's no good for me. We got a That was I think dude do it figure it out. Yeah, cuz I think I texted you when this was going on, right? Yeah Yeah, I was like, what am I gonna do yet? Texted him told him this situation. He's like No problem. Do what you got to do. We'll do it next week The next week rolls around it was Sunday. I texted him. I said, how about this week? He'd said Wednesday this time boom boom Wow, I've been easy to deal with. Yeah, good That's what I mean And just a lovable he's always to me been lovable and then listening to you guys talk Just fell in love with him even more and like I said, I just had that thought about Jordan was like man I can't believe that these guys that he would still hold a grudgy. It's not Charles put it that way I know it's not anything Charles is doing. I wish I could tell us about someone else I've been trying to buck could waits three weeks to return text messages and doesn't know and Just I know that is that's still going on Don't know I've now I'm done. I'm like, I've whatever okay. I'm not in the mood You know what I have been into more than anything for like the past week and a half What? I've watched it every day every minute the u.s. Open What? Love it. Do I know you I know well, I've always like Oh For sure, yeah, okay No, but even so no, but I like watching tennis more than I like watching golf hockey soccer I always like but we've talked about this the older you get the more Responsibilities to have you can't pay attention to every single thing It's like yeah, I can't watch random tennis tournaments in the middle of whatever but the US Open I've always gotten into the US Open I you know, it's just such a cool New York thing. I always I used to go every now and again I've heard the prices this year are ridiculous But I'm into it this year very into the Djokovic Alcaraz rivalry I've watched it every day. I have one complaint that I have to get off my chest You don't care about this, but I just have to say this and it's funny. My buddy diesel is here on Sunday and I said this to him and then dog said it on his show Tuesday which annoyed me because I don't want people to think I'm saying this because Russo said it but I said it myself So Chris Fowler does the US Open on ESPN Chris Fowler is excellent on tennis don't particularly love him on college football love him on tennis He's great on tennis, but he leaves every other day to do college football Now I understand college football is gonna get 10 million viewers and the US Open is gonna get a million or whatever it is Like yes, there's a massive ratings disparity between the two But if you're the voice of the tennis on ESPN you the voice of the US Open I get it You're also the voice of color just stick and do the US Open. No one's gonna care if Chris Fowler misses a week one college football game Nobody's gonna care if he misses the first week of the college football season and he jets off he does again, I don't know I like the continuity of having him there for the Big matches, so that's my The only thing I'll say on that is two things one I loved going to the US Open one time that I went Other than that, I don't really care about it, too I never thought Chris Fowler was good on college football. Well, I just have you ever gone to US Open? Yeah Yeah, yeah, it's I want one thing. It was great. I had a hookup actually when my friends used to work there We were in some sweet. I got to watch Federer. I loved it. This was years ago. So it was great I like tennis. I just don't have the time to watch it It's great in person, but I've heard the prices this year went nuts compared to pay. I'm sure All right Last thing before I let you go. Were you a Jimmy Buffett fan? Define Jimmy Buffett fan. It's not that I don't like his music. I never purchased an album or a song Let's start with this. Do you know any other songs besides Margaritaville and cheeseburger paradise? Yes, and only because I just was listening to it this week a volcano. I think it is See those are the only those are the only two songs I know so I wanted to check where you are Have you heard volcano? No, I don't know. It's that was great. I just said hey, I You know told the phone I can't say it now because I don't want to go off but play You know that that was one that came up. I heard the cheeseburger one. I heard Margaritaville, which I knew but volcano I thought was excellent as well Yeah But obviously, you know, I know so many people love them. That was One of those shocker ones like I didn't it was like whoa that guy you don't you know You know what made me listen to it aside from the fact that obviously passed away. So it was on my mind I was sitting in three hours of traffic from Long Island to the city and I was like I need something To put me in a good mood before I do something that I'm gonna regret here like drive my car into the wall So I put on a little Margaritaville and volcano and it did the trick. It worked for a little while That's a good way to that's a good way to pay tribute to Jimmy Buffett Alright, so we got to read reviews, but we'll do it next week because we did a lot here first week of the NFL season We cannot wait to hear next week how you handled your first NFL Sunday cannot wait. "edelman" Discussed on SI Media Podcast
"Wasn't it a coach or was it a player? III know I mean, I think I Don't want to like sound disrespectful. I think one of the issues why people don't know exactly what's going on It's because it hasn't been big name players yet. Calvin Wrigley was the biggest name player but like My take on it is unless someone's fixing a game who cares if NFL players are you the only issue is if someone's You can't bet on the game, right? But what I'm saying is you guys make so much money No one's gonna be on the take like if Calvin Ridley's making whatever he makes let's say five million dollars a year No one's gonna offer him any amount of money that's gonna come close to make it worthwhile for him to fix a game It's just a ridiculous notion. So if the guy wants a better parlay let the guy bet a freakin parlay and enjoy his life Better parlay on basketball. You don't do it on football, right? Like the number one Pete Rhodes is still not in the Hall of Fame for this, right? We have examples of people that have done this and it's been frowned upon Like if it's that big of a deal, you probably have a problem You know what? I mean? Cuz you can go do like You could go to the boys and say look I got 20 bucks on our college team and no one's gonna find out about that you don't got to go onto your damn phone and And have a paper trail of what you're doing Yes, I mean like if it's that big of a deal wait until offseason go to Vegas and get get your fix of whatever you want, but I Don't know the rules completely. Yeah I'm sure the teams are probably educating them now, right? Oh, yeah, that's up to the team's responsibility Yeah, it's not a league thing. This is a team thing. Well, you know, whoever's in charge of each team We used to have all these you know Every night before camp we that we go over all the rules and regulation like clockwork Bella check All right, you know It's it's 582 a pound now this year if you're over a pound every day, like we go over all Contact terminals this you can't gamble. There's no guns like we would go over all these goddamn rules and like That that goes to the leadership of the team I think that Put in these guys in the situations to even go out there and do that and if they control it They got a problem. The league's got to look at helping them out I just want to clarify my position on this because I know someone's gonna listen to this then Send me a tweet and like you're an asshole. Bye-bye. I Agree like NFL players should not be betting on the NFL totally get it I'm down with that my issues that the length of the suspensions and the punishment seems so like for Calvin Ridley to be Suspended for a year for betting when he wasn't like Fixing a game or betting against his team. Like I just I think it's the Punishment he'd been like a $1,500 parlay on You know with the Falcon he bet his the Falcons to win. He bet his own team can't bet on your team, bro like that's That is so like I agree, but I don't think I don't think a year if you're I know he was hurt When you're hurt you're in a different mind state, maybe it made him feel like he was part of the team You know, I'm gonna put some skin on the boys. No, you can't do that. Right? Okay, I agree. I agree. I just think a year is harsh. That's my own. That's my only he was the first one They got a set of cool, you know Never want to be the first one in any of those things It's true Tom will join Fox next year. They think for whatever reason he's gonna bail I disagree I think he's gonna do it and I think he's gonna be great if you had a guess like you think Tom goes through and He's going to Fox next year I'm sure in some former capacity. He'll be doing something. Yeah. No the length of what he's gonna be doing I haven't talked to him about it But I have the same stance as you if he's gonna do it or whatever He's gonna do he's gonna be great at it because I'm sure he's hearing people Oh Brady doesn't have no personality He can't do this. He can't do that. He probably hears that and he's probably gonna be sitting there There's gonna be like a Brady six on like people that you know call games He's gonna be crying after like ten years of doing this like this guy still doesn't think I'm a good announcer You know what? I mean? So like yeah, he that guy creates his own fire So if if and when or where or what he's gonna be great. Yep. I agree I saw a clip of you talking recently. I think it was on your podcast with Sam Rell games games with names where I Mean, obviously everyone knows you and you and Brady are tight You got along famously But I guess there was a little bit of friction there because he wanted you to do the TB 12 and you were not down with doing the TB 12 no, I just go ahead I I Did the TB 12 with the je11 collapse So I would take things from the TB 12 method. I'm really close with Alex Guerrero He's helped me through a lot of injuries and those guys, you know They're very disciplined and and and he was on the field for as long as he was for a reason For all the hard work and dedication that they put into their body you know, I would just Pick and pull on what I could use because you know, I needed you know, they Everyone knows Tom doesn't love that like you can't be doing back squats or like crazy like explosive stuff but like when you're a 5-foot-10 little white guy in the NFL you need to be exploding all the time It's different. So We would get a little arguments about certain things But I was give me I was like I was pretty much in it the method, you know What about the food angle of it though? Were you doubt like were you doing no strawberries and no tomatoes and now I would do so I would I would get my blood pooled and then I would have it analyzed by some you know Professional that shows your inflammation factors. So I mean that could very well be true for some people I don't know but you know, I was tailoring my My diet to what my body digested the best you do a phenomenal Bella check imitation Do you have it like a Tom imitation of him? Like maybe trying to recruit you to the tb-12 or or explaining why you need to tb-12 it Like what would you said you guys would have disagreements or arguments? How would they go down exactly? he he gets real like That's of aggressive and petty with how he get me he'll pull my string when he pulls my string, you know, like If I got hurt like I sprained an ankle on like rolling it or something, bro You shouldn't have been squatting bro. You shouldn't have been squatting Like something like that. Like what does the squat have to do with me cutting and rolling my ankle? You Not fully in it like stuff like that it would piss me I would get so goddamn mad at him baby You're not fully in yeah he's uh It was it was there is that one on what his little documentary was his documentary The TV versus time or something Tom versus time where we got an argument We're all in Montana about lifting and stuff and I did go on to tear my ACL here I Was gonna say what was his comment after that No, he won't when I'm really down. He doesn't push right and Now Gronk is at Fox. He's on the he's on the pregame show that follows your pregame I always call your show the pre-pregame show and then there's the other one and Gronk's on that Did you ever think Gronk would get into TV? I mean listen, no one has a better personality in Gronk, but it didn't seem like TV would be like his thing but he He's embraced it. It seems like I mean Gronk's just he's fun and Contate like that. He's got a contagiousness about his his personality that Whatever he's doing. It's fun and You see that on TV. He's having fun. He's cracking jokes. He's the big guy He's like the big teddy bear Like on like that's just that's just him and I think he's embraced it and I think he kills it on TV I think Gronk's first viral moment on TV had to do with you where he was talking about you and I mean he was he was trying to talk about you being a squirrel I guess but You know, we're out here all of us we get very you know, we're all looking for phrasing and he talked about how you always get your nut and It was just Gronk being Gronk I don't think the brain was even Were you like, how did you become aware of that and like what he said and did you react to it with him at all? I laughed That's just grown yeah, it's like he's only he gets into like almost like a WWE character when he's like doing his his bit. Yeah That's the Gronk yeah Yeah Nine like all the time and like no does like kids stuff and like kid, you know, maybe like But that's him. He's just a lovable man. He is he is I Also saw a clip and now this is gonna be the dumbest thing anyone's ever asked you and I'm embarrassed But I figured I'd ask you since I have you instead of trying to guess There's a clip from your podcast where you talked about Having beef with Ben Affleck and I watch it and I'm like, I think he's serious then I'm like, I think he's kidding around and playing around. I'm like, you know, I think he's a little serious I don't think he's totally kidding around Give me like oh, were you serious with the Affleck beef? I was it you were playing around but you were pissed because he said Tom needs more weapons and you took that personally What I'm just going record and say I'm a Casey Affleck guy Not a fan of Girl like Casey. Okay. All right fair enough my favorite Affleck You mentioned earlier about doing um, great movie. Great movie What movie say that again see yeah, great movie I was gonna say something but I probably um You Mentioned earlier about doing YouTube videos and Instagram videos I was a big fan back in the day of your burger time video the burger time series Are you still like a diehard burger? aficionado Yeah, I'm a professional Tell me now you played in New England. You're in LA Where's the best but like? Not place but like are there better burgers East Coast West Coast? I know all you ever want the in and out but like give me like break it down, right like East Coast burgers you go to New York you go to like Boston They got like a real pub style fat thick burger You know, that's their they their traditionalist on New York. We like to taste the beef We want just cheese beef maybe some onion in a big brioche bun. We got a taste of beef In California smash burgers are like so hot right now everyone does a smash burger like, you know Every burger tastes the same as a special sauce So it just depends on what your flavor is and then you go to like, Minnesota you get the juicy Lucy What's that? That's where they they put like cheese in the middle Okay, called a juicy Lucy very big in a Minneapolis I think what so what's the single best burger Julian Edelman has ever had in his life? It's it's tough It's tough. But do you have that like do you think back like oh my god, I got to go back to that that place I love that. I'm a sucker for for Charles over in New York For fo you are yes, it's for Charles. It's a spectacular burger joint and like it It's so hard to get I literally just won Super Bowl MVP. I tried to go and they still turn me down I had to go into like some website to get a damn reservation. Wait a second. Stop. Stop. Stop. I need this full story You won the Super Bowl you try to go to this place and they don't let you in No, I won the Super Bowl MVP I'm out there a press tour and I'm like, I gotta try this for Charles Everyone's talking about it and they wouldn't let us in so I had to literally go on I was doing like a radio show On Sirius. I was like, can anyone give me a goddamn reservation to this fucking for Charles? I'm sorry, if you can't swear on your way to curse you get you get cursed. This is how passionate I am about this Yeah, well, why don't they let you in I don't understand why didn't they let you in I don't know there It kind of kind of turned me on it made me want a more I have to say though I have a newfound respect for you because this place won't let you in and you're saying they have the best burger That's very big of you. Yeah, I mean you know Burgers, you got to tell the truth How do you How'd you finally end up getting the burger after they didn't let you in I literally went on to a radio show Well, I got turned down that same week. I was on like a press tour promoting a documentary 100% on Showtime and I was like can anyone can anyone gave me a Reservation and like some guy DMed me and like yeah, you could take my spot And I went in when and I went in with some I went in with some high Expectations I was pissed off in the place. They came out with these white gloves They come out with white gloves these guys come and they serve the burger with white gloves and they cut it in half for you With white gloves on and you sit and you eat it and they got a great french fry It's spectacular really good burger and and their french dip could be just as good. I'm a big french dip guy as well That that place is spectacular and then a different style burger in New York. I'll hit my New York Raul's It's over in Soho It's got like a peppercorn dipping sauce and I'm super traditionalist with burgers. You know, I don't want this weird stuff It's a French place it's a freight I think a steak and frites joint and you can only go to the bar to eat the burger and I went there and I once again I went on this place is gonna suck This is terrible dipping in this pepper sauce and it knocked my socks off It was spectacular and then out in LA, you know, like I said, everyone's on the smash burger craze you got burger She wrote for the win Burgers never say die They're all they're all I mean, they're all solid Burger she wrote is the best name I've ever heard for a burger place. Yeah, they got a good burger. It's over There's I think what there's one in Silver Lake and one over on third over in West Hollywood. It's it's very good this is such a fat person question, but I'm just curious but Can shitty fries Hurt your burger Reviewer ranking like I feel like if the fries are subpar. It makes me like the burger even less a little bit or is that crazy? No, the the fry can only make the burger better it can never bring it down You know sense you have a good burger like in and out doesn't have the best fries But they have a consistent I would put them at the top of list of fast-food burgers consistent always good Five guys has the best fries, correct Mmm McDonald's has the best fries. Well, that's yeah. I was yeah, I was going on like the I I count McDonald like McDonald's Burger King Wendy's I count separate from like the five guys in and out like I Kind of I agree with that somewhat in and out Shake Shack those right those guys the upper echelon Those are like the Fridays and then you know, the the McDonald's is like Applebee's exactly one step You know, but kinda in that same realm exactly. Yeah, and then you got Nathan's and I don't know if you're a native the Nathan's could hot dog No the fries. I See, I'm not a bit. I don't know Nathan's that well If you need to be back in New York for that, I think Yeah, all right. I do love a hot dog There you go two things and I appreciate the time Getting back to I said about I like talking to players who just got out of the league I saw something this morning and I like I gotta ask Julian about this Chris Jones. Everyone knows is holding out with the Chiefs We don't know if he's playing Thursday, and I saw something that as of now he owes like two million dollars to the Chiefs in fines and I saw that and I said to myself let's say he signs by Thursday They does he like how does that work? He really has to write them a check for two million or will they say to him like oh forget the two million dollars Like I think because it's not a rookie deal that it's not It's not wiped off if they sign if it's a rookie deal and you're sitting out They can wipe that off. I think he has to pay for it, but I'm sure his agent will be like, hey, we want 33 million dollars this year and you can take that so it'll be a duct I believe Because my thing is like if he has to give them two million dollars and they take it that would I would think he'd be pissed Off at the team and then you know, like that's not good All right I want to end that's why we that's why we sit as a as a union and negotiate a collective bargaining Agreement that we all just love right? We all love this agreement and they get it. They get it right every time every time I Want one thing I want to ask about the gambling you did a lot I know you did a lot of stuff I think for win. Yeah win bet and win resorts There you get Vegas beautiful place Boston Harbor do you will you Bet any like futures in terms of like over-under team wins Yeah, I bet last year that the Patriots was we're gonna get over eight and a half and I I knew when I was at The Las Vegas Raiders game and we sucked that game away That It's a game within inches and I knew that game would come down to haunt me and it did and we didn't you had I just remembered you were there right? I was there. No. Yeah, you were there you had it That was a phenomenal video your reaction to that play the throw backwards. I remember that now. It just hit me Action put on it If I put 50 grand on this thing, I didn't say I didn't say the bet was phenomenal I said your reaction to losing the bet was phenomenal from a content for those of us in the content game. We appreciate that Yeah We're on I went dressed out for that game Canadian tuxedo Jean on Jean on Jean and It didn't work. There was no Nothing good good. Nothing went well that day. Yeah, do you have an over-under that you'd love this year? I Yet like I literally did the first week of spreads last night. I gotta start. Yes But I was gonna say you've been Give me a couple. Do you have any? Yeah, I got a couple that I love I was gonna say you've been very nice and I appreciate all the time But I was gonna say like you need to step it up because the season's about to start So you need to get the you need to do your gambling scouting. That's more important than your I'm fully in on gambling scouting, but I am a Fox analyst So what I've been doing as it has been watching film and and learning for all these guys forget that I the one though I'm not saying this come in New Yorker because I'm not I don't I'm not a Giants fan But I do like the Giants over seven and a half. I love day ball. I think he's great I think they're gonna be them. I wouldn't watch them in Pre training camp and I love day ball too, and I I take over that they're gonna have over that. Yeah, I think Daniel Jones will be better He's gonna be way better. Yeah Waller's Waller defeat stays healthy. We'll have 120 catches. I'll run down some of these here for you and Stop me when Here it is I stopped me if one of these grabs y'all just read them out and Chiefs eleven and a half Lions nine and a half Arizona three and a half Falcons eight and a half Ravens ten and a half Nothing grabbing you so far. I'll keep going Arizona and you know, I was listening to Lombardi talk about that whole That Whole injuries guarantee we're In theory, they may not play Kyler Murray and do like that whole It's what is it called? What you're not supposed to do in the NFL. Yeah tank. Thank you You know, I don't know but that one kind of is Close. Okay, Bill's ten and a half Panthers seven and a half Bears seven and a half Bengals ten and a half While we were taping this Joe burrow said he's playing on Sunday We Brown's we all knew that Joe burrow hadn't played in a preseason or training campus whole damn career Brown's nine and a half Cowboys ten and a half Broncos eight and a half. Oh They're in a tough division Eight and a half. I'm taking I'm taking that I'm taking the over Sean Payton He'll get him nine wins. Okay Packers seven and a half Texans six and a half called six and a half Jaguars nine and a half. Everyone loves the Jaguars this year everyone loves Jaguars that that makes you know, it kind of reminded me when I threw $50,000 on the Philadelphia Eagles to win the Super Bowl everyone and it you know when it caught me It caught me I even threw a goddamn billboard up in Arizona that it's gonna be a great day for Eagles I jumped on the Eagles bandwagon, which I'm Not and then everyone started talking about it whenever it starts talking about it don't happen, right? Right, of course, and that's right. And then I had night night before the game I had dinner with Cliff Kingsbury and he told me that Patrick Holmes I was worried about the ankle Worry about the ankle ankle look terrible. He told me Patrick Mahone's is on fire He had a you know, look in his eye and I went to win I was like, can I change my goddamn bet and they're like No, you can't You really worry you went to win and said, can you change your bet? No, I didn't say that but I For the I almost let that go. I was trying to be a good host and then I you know The gambler me came out. You can't go and say I Because you lost 50,000 on the Eagles 50,000 on the Patriots Is this why you're at Fox now? You need the paycheck? Yeah Chargers nine and a half Rams six and a half Raiders six and a half. I'm taking that over Jimmy G over he stays healthy over Jimmy G stays healthy over what's going on with Chandler Jones in this whole thing? You see that that social media boy I'll tell you it's you stayed out of the social media trouble, right? You haven't really You haven't caused any girl that exposed me on snapchat after a Super Bowl. I mean, do you not remember that? I do remember it. I wouldn't have brought it up since you did but that didn't make you look bad Like that's like, okay. I'll give you one. Don't get mad at me. I'm not trying like your boy I know you're tight when I'm in Dola like that was a bad one That was a bad one. He hopped off social media for three years after that Literally, yeah, you just got back on That was a bad one that was nothing like yours yours you'd had nothing to do with yours That wasn't you didn't do anything wrong there He went on there and you know, Olivia Culpo and it was bad. It was bad You can't make an emotional decision on that damn those apps. You can't you can't make emotional decisions. Yeah, exactly These over on this Because you've been so good. I just want you told one of the best stories in the history of the NFL About Belichick where you caught him one night in a hot tub late Or and then he was on the treadmill and you were still at the facility I don't know. I mean Nick Bosa has agreed to a five-year one hundred and seventy million dollar extension right now Yep, just right now breaking news 170 yeah five years What's guaranteed? 122 and a half million Man people on YouTube will love that for the face Julian just made 120 million man slaughters that shit that ain't there. I'll tell you that right now All the beating you took over the middle and you can't get that money, you know, I didn't play for the money I played for the memories. All right, right, right Tell me I don't I don't know if you want to retell that story or if you have a different Belichick story But I'm fascinated by Belichick. I love the guy there was a great clip You know, we talked about it before about giving teams. Well, there was a clip I saw last week an old NFL NFL Films clip Where Derek Mason I think was talking shit to Belichick and Belichick just says shut the fuck up and look at the scoreboard Which is just the like that's the perfect response anything Do you have anything Belichick you want to tell that story again? But I'd love to get something from you on bill before we end it if you don't mind You know anything funny he ever said that stuck with you a man, you know anything so as soon as we have our last mini camper OTA Practice he'd bring us all in for like an exit meeting and he'd go around the league and read what people were saying to the media like This guy and he would sit and read it. We're gonna go on win the Super Bowl And Like it'd be like someone from the Browns or something. He's like this fucking guy These guys haven't fucking won a game and like he just go it was in it was reiterating to the players like Don't be saying stupid shit. We're leaving the facility right now There's gonna be a microphone in your face at some time, but he would just go on and he goes this fucking asshole these guys You know Okay, he says he's gonna lead the league in sex get two sacks last year what the fuck is this, you know like Just he would make examples of what people did and then with his dry Sarcasm and how he would it was everyone would be sitting like if you're a young player you couldn't laugh But if you're an older player that made plays for a few years, you could laugh by that So that's great. That's all were you were you scared of him? It wasn't, you know my first few years, I mean he he's got a presence about him. I I wasn't It's kind of like the principal, you know, you are you scared of the principal? but when the principal walks by and you're kind of a knucklehead you're gonna point your shoulders back and Like kind of like be on alert Yeah, that's kind of how it was were you intimidated or scared of Tom at all Were you too close to Tom to be scared or into at first I was I wasn't intimidated. I was more I was more I Was more I Didn't want to let him down on any like Opportunity if like when I was a younger player even when I was an older player, you know, you if he was gonna come to you Or if he was gonna call the play in the huddle when I was a younger player I wanted to know where I wanted to go immediately out of the huddle. I wanted to know my personal group I wanted to know my play. I wanted to make you know, you just didn't want to let him down. Yeah And was he good at it? I get the impression. He was really good at taking a ribbing from you guys Like would you guys bust his chops Tom? yeah, there wasn't like when I when I got there there was guys that could rib him and And combust his balls But then by the time like I became an older player You know, he was in the league for so long that you know the younger players in the team weren't even born by the time he like yeah, they he was winning he was in the NFL when they were like Three years old so like he had an aura about him where guys were scared and like they they were intimidated when they saw Famous Tom with his you know his life and Super Bowl champion and who he was so like that was kind of my role was to kind of bust his balls and make him human and And he liked it because no one else really did at the late part of you know, our career. Yeah Yeah, that makes sense. That's great. Well, I appreciate you coming on everyone can see Julian Edelman on Fox NFL kickoff starting on Sunday. I still do in the pod games with names during the season or is that on? Yeah, we just had we had some really good guests. I can't say him yet. Okay, it's a really good guest These last two weeks. Let's go this Saturday. The CW is your new home for college football All your favorite teams go Eagles go Tyco Blue Devils all your favorite players I'm just excited to play football game with my guys. It's it's poorly different energy this year It's so much fun all ready to make history. We're excited to get to work 13 unforgettable games are you ready and it all kicks off Saturday put the pads on and get after it catch ACC football live Saturday on the CW All right joining me now as I media podcast regular appreciate him coming on from sports business journal And of course the Martian and Iran podcast figure this is a great week to have him on with Sunday ticket debuting on YouTube and then this whole cable battle between ESPN Well Disney and charter spectrum. He is John Iran with his Orioles Jacket in the background if you're watching on YouTube and he should be very happy about his Orioles John. Yeah, that's a circa That was my birthday present when I turned 16 circa 1983 starter jacket I love it and the Orioles they cute they have not faded they keep going they getting better and better It's you know, it's good. You know, we've seen like Texas fade, but the Orioles know They had these young kids. I thought they were gonna tire like some of these pictures I've already thrown more innings than they have in their entire career. I was expecting their arms to fall off So knock wood, Jimmy knock wood So I wanted to have you want to talk about the spectrum Disney cable battle because I've gotten a lot of people Asking me about it and this is not my area of expertise It's yours, but I want to start before we get to that. Let me start with the college football ratings Because they've come out over the last couple of days and very very strong for week one. Let me start with this LSU Florida State on Labor Day night Sunday night, not a competitive game in the second half 9.1 million viewers and that is without the 15 million Spectrum subscribers that's College football ESPN. They have to be very happy out of the gate with that and we'll get to Fox in Colorado But let's start there Yeah that number blew me away solely because if you take a look at They they're missing 15 million subscribers, which is I can't do the math right now but right double digits 15% 20% of of their total a Distribution number and so getting a number that comes that high for a game. That wasn't particularly good mind you that game was on ABC right and that it's not 15 million ABC homes that have been dropped because there are some ABC channels that are not owned by Disney that are still up and been able to carry it on charter subscriptions It's only the dis the Disney owned ABC channels that are off. Yeah. Yeah, it's so confusing And then I just heard a bunch of your listeners click off at that explanation. No, no, no They want to know about this and we'll get to it and then Fox had seven I think was seven point two million for Colorado TCU and they have Fox again in week two against I mean, excuse me They have Colorado again in week two against Nebraska I have a feeling we're gonna see a lot of what win or lose because I think even if they lose Dion's the story not the team and We're gonna see a lot of Colorado. I think on ESPN ABC Fox etc. Correct Yeah, in fact, I was I did a story about Fox Fox had Colorado for the first two weeks of the season And they developed an entire marketing campaign around Deion Sanders and included having Deion Sanders look-alikes Sort of walking around in the different markets a fake Buffalo, you know for the Colorado buffaloes out there and What one thing that their executive said is that this is a first time they've done something like this around a coach Sent in like probably eight years and was when Jim Harbaugh went to Michigan it's a this is really unusual to have a Superstar a celebrity on the sidelines for a college football team and and you can see Fox diving deep into this You're gonna like you said ESPN certainly is gonna do the same thing and Deion's helping them out I mean he did the interview with Aaron Andrews and He's sort of You know Depends how you look at it. I think he turned the Listen, most people are all in there on the bandwagon. He also turned a lot of people off by Getting into that press conference after the win and just talking about the media So he's he's he's helping. I think Fox and ESPN here with being such a character Oh, and he knows how to be quoted and when you say he's helping Fox This week. It's it's his first home game in Colorado and he's miked up all week and so Fox is gonna for the pregame show you're gonna see a lot of Of Deion being miked up and he knows he's gonna be miked up too I think it's gonna be you know, if you like Deion, even if you hate Deion, it's gonna be totally entertaining absolutely and NBC had their first Big Ten game on Saturday night It was I think what did they get for that three Some three points. I have the email in my in my inbox. I thought I wrote it down. It's a bad job I mean, but my question is are you think they're happy with that first rating out of the gate? I can look it up while you yeah, you know that the early games This Saturday, they have my Maryland Terrapins going against Charlotte and in primetime So I think that doesn't captivate America all across from East Coast to West Coast in primetime on Saturday night I don't know. What matchup will the ratings in my household are gonna be So I think NBC it's gonna be slow but eventually they're gonna have you know Cold weather games from some of these Big Ten brands and and they're gonna they're gonna be plenty happy with with the primetime package and CBS they just right before we started they came out with their rating for the Ohio State Indiana game now CBS they're in a little bit of an interesting spot because they still have the SEC this year But they've got a few Big Ten games They had Ohio State Indiana and that drew four point six million up against the Colorado game So I thought that was a pretty solid rating there for CBS for their first game out of the gate Again, these numbers that you're saying like there's nowhere else in sports. That's bringing excuse me nowhere else in television That's bringing in these kind of numbers. And so you talk about You know the genres at work on on Television and the NFL is it's bizarre. It's just you know far and away that the most popular there is Second is college football and then you literally have everything else You know, so there's a big step down the college football and then there's a big step down to you know To the college basketball or really any other sport. It was it's interesting It was three point seven million for the West Virginia Penn State game on NBC and primetime 4.6 for Ohio State Indiana at noon So I I would imagine CBS is a little happier than the NBC people today Well, maybe but one thing that that Fox has Taught us over the past couple of years is they put their biggest game on the in the in the new Window on Saturday and last season. It was the most viewed window of college football So in television terms primetime is typically when people are trying to get to primetime, but weekend football terms The in the NFL the most watched window is not Sunday Night Football That's a sort of the most watched game, but it's it's the most watched window is for 30 on the late game on Sunday East Coast bias they're saying for 30, but it's a the so there's a habit of afternoon football during the weekend that Fox plugged into and Seeing those numbers and hearing those numbers doesn't really surprise me at all now Let's shift now to this Spectrum Disney situation. I'm gonna ask you some basic questions that So what I'm still trying to figure out about all this is spectrum. I know they had 15 million Customers are they just in New York? Are they outside of the state of New York? Where it is spec? Where is this covering exactly there? They're in big markets. They have they're in Los Angeles They're in Dallas. So they they're they're nationwide, but they're Typically with cable, you know, you have to go market to market. And so the it's in several markets across the country. Okay? Now this is not just we've seen disputes before between cable and networks. We've seen it I remember when I first got DirecTV, they didn't have the yes Network for a while There was a big dispute with that. We know the NFL Network didn't get on a lot of cable things to start off with but this is different in that There has to be a change in this whole way we've talked you and I have talked about this before with all these streaming services and everything going to streaming and how many different Streaming services you need and what's happening with cable and ESPN. I mean you've done a great job whenever you report the numbers It blows me away. I mean ESPN going from a hundred million subscribers to 70 million through cable This is not just your regular dispute. Like this is looking to change the way things are done, correct? That's the way that Charter wants to paint to paint this So if you're if you're doing the PR back and forth Charter is coming out and saying that this system is broken and we all can see that it's broken, right? Right that the the prices are going up. So I Marchand who is a charter subscriber says he pays I think 260 bucks a month, you know for access, you know that that includes all the whole bundle I mean that is a huge price to pay for for cable. I'm the same way Xfinity down here in DC And so Charter wants to say look this is broken and we need to come up with a solution if you talk to ESPN, they're gonna say look If you don't carry us you're out of video because we have They had college football opening weekend on over Labor Day weekend. They have the US open They have college football coming again this weekend and then the NFL starts and they have Aaron Rodgers his first game as a New York jet so there's gonna be a lot of interest in in that game and Then after that game you have more college football and you have more NFL and it just kind of likes going and keeps going I actually think more than week one with Aaron Rodgers I think week two is gonna be a major issue because week week week two is the first time ESPN has the doubleheader Side-by-side, there's gonna be a game on ESPN and a game on a ABC on that week to Monday night Both will be blacked out because ABC is being blacked out from what I've heard in what we discussed earlier in some market Not all markets, but some Well, this is that you're gonna lose out on two games. So you're you're I'm assuming you're a spectrum subscriber, right? No, I am NOT. That's why I have a lot of confusion about You yeah. Yeah. Well, first of all, I'm not in Long Island. So spectrum is not offered here It's optimum, but I don't have optimum. I have Verizon FiOS and I'll just say this quickly. This is not a plug I don't get paid. I don't get discounts.

"I love John Madden. He was the face of it, you know and it was just like It just worked out. Yeah, I'm kind of I'm kind of pissed at Schrager because he was on here three weeks ago And he's a good friend of mine and he said there was gonna be a new person joining the show But he wouldn't say who it was and it turned out to be you It would have been nice if he would have shared that news DMed a couple times. Yeah Via social media, but like what do you call him like Shrag? I call him shrags shrags Yeah, great guy great guy. You'll love him. Yeah, I watch him on Good Morning Football and yeah For I Brings a player down. He always sees a positive light on Failures or some, you know, he's always bringing a positive spin on it. I'm yeah, I'm not like that I'm absolutely not like I need a little more more of that in my life So I'm excited to be with a around Peter straight is positive energy Is that a product of playing for Bill Belichick for so long? Do you think ah, you know? That probably helps. I was my dad was very tough Yeah, you know and I was always my number one critic it was never good enough or you know, that's just how it goes When you're an old to an ultimate competitor. Yeah, I've said about Tom for a couple of years now. I'm a huge huge Brady fan and I think he's gonna be great when he does this for Fox and I've said if you're paying attention and you're not just someone who hates Tom Brady because he beat your team If you you know, once he got out of New England went to Tampa Bay, I think we saw what his personality is Do you feel like you guys had to be bottled up a little bit playing for Belichick or is am I off on that? Theory that Tom and I think even you I mean you always had personality, but I feel like in Gronk I feel like once you got out of New England, we saw it even more am I wrong? No, you're not wrong. There's an expectation. There's an expectation on how to handle the media and and You Know when you see your best players when I when I got there you see out teddy brewski Kevin fall Tom how they handled The media it was all about ball, you know, nothing Nothing was bigger than ball and you know I came in at a different time where social media started coming on and that gave me an outlet to go out and show my personality, but when it came to talking to you know Fox or NBC or CBS after a game We knew an expectation that everything had to be about ball So that's really what it is, that's how coach Belichick is But you still got to see people's Personality in some form of fashion and I feel like he's softened up a little bit You know, he's been I mean, I heard him talking about Taylor Swift. Yeah her mental toughness about With the rain elements Yeah Holy coach would find you know how she's mentally tough because she went out and performed under pressure of the rain It's an opportunity. He would say that he would say this is an opportunity to work in the wet ball What have you have you seen the eras tour? Cuz it seems like a ton of athletes have seen the eras Yeah I took my daughter and her her two friends over here in LA in the last show and I mean it was remarkable. She's a Yeah, I heard someone talking about it I don't want to botch who it was I forgot their name but you know it was right up there with her performance and just the Stage and the sets and the trance like it was like a Michael Jackson kind of performance Production. Yeah, it was extraordinary Yeah, yeah, no matter what like, you know something over she's been around so long, you know One of her songs three of her songs five of her songs, right and you just have a smile the whole time Well, she's there. I've said this before I mean I forget who the singer is forget what the songs I take all that out Anyone who does three hours deserves a massive amount of credit just that alone three hours the whole time and It was impressive and it wasn't like it was three hours take, you know one once a week she's gone Yeah times a week. Yeah. Yeah What just tying up the Belichick thing wait, is there anything I'd look I don't know what kind of insight you could share but Would anything piss Belichick off more than someone making headlines or getting out of line You know with the media or is with our internal rules that would get him even more mad than that Obviously maybe like missing a practice being late for practice, but in terms of his rules where would like, you know Generating headlines and giving bulletin board material rank in his sort of hierarchy of things that would piss him off. I Mean it's kind of like a sin one sins all sin It doesn't matter murder someone you cheat on your wife or do something great like they're all or you run a red light or you I mean Sends us in yeah coach Belichick. Got it I have a couple of fun things I want to discuss to you But I I always love having ex players on who were who were recent who were in the league recently Just to pick your brain about some of the things going on with current players and current things are going on one of the big storylines I shouldn't say storylines, but one of the big things that's going on is There have been players getting in trouble with the gambling issue, which I think is just the hypocrisy of the NFL getting all this money from gambling and then someone can't go bed, you know a parlay or whatever but In turn, what's your perspective as a player? Like do you think the rules are too strict? Do you think players need to just follow the rules better? How would you handle it? What? Is it really tough for players to know what they're allowed to do what not? I mean, I guess someone got in trouble because the betting on an app from the facility But if they were doing it somewhere else, it wouldn't be a problem like it seems convoluted But what's your take as someone who just got out of the league and now gambling is so prominent You know when I was in the league we used to have Some old Mafia guy come in and tell us that he used to like we'd have like a presentation and how You know, you're a target as an NFL guy for you wise guys to come out and try to you know wine and dine you for some info like we they kind of like told us and Educated us on how dangerous that whole thing is But you know that it's the NFL, you know, it's their rules and it's their regulations Who was it? It was a coach that was doing a bet at the facility.

I'm doing very well cuz football is here. So it was back Thank God is fully back. I Mean, I wish I wish the trends Kelsey wasn't hurt because I feel like that takes a little bit away from the opening game But it is what it is If you look at it though over the last However, many years the Kansas City Chiefs have been on this run. They've had relatively pretty decent help Throughout their whole thing. I mean they left they lost the left tackle in the Super Bowl That's why they lost against, you know, Brady they couldn't protect Patrick Mahomes but it's it's getting to that time in their Era where it gets hard, you know being a guy that's been on one of those teams a dynasty. They're not there quite yet but uh You know, they're well on their way if they could stay healthy and you would know better than anyone about dynasty So when would you say they're there? How many would they have to win before you say they're a dynasty everyone knows it's three Okay, I don't know what's going on. Everyone keeps on talking like oh This is you you into no, it doesn't matter if you get to the Super Bowl We went to eight straight AFC championships or something like that. Like you got to win three to get to be in Cowboys previous Patriots Niners Steelers It's not two. It's not two So tell me I want to get into your Fox gig and transitioning to meeting that since we're on it It's a good topic because I'm just curious because one of the things I'm looking at is someone who's scouting Over-unders to bet and and you know who's gonna win the AFC and stuff like that The Motivation I shouldn't say the motivation. I mean, I think the motivation is there even if you win But is it difficult or how difficult is it after winning two like they've won? It's very difficult To get geared up every Sunday, you know people don't realize How hard it is once you go out win a Super Bowl Okay, now they have two that when you win that first one you become a target everyone circles you on the schedule You win another one now everyone circling now now Divisions and conferences are designing their teams to beat you. So it gets harder and harder and as an individual player You know Your motivation you have to pull what what's motivating you because natural human instinct you're like You know, we got this we're good and then you know something happens you have injuries here an injury They're a player doesn't sign back because no two teams are the same. It's a new team every year. So it's very hard mentally To keep it going, you know And you have and they have a leader in Patrick Mahomes that can do that We had Tom Brady Tom Brady was always always on he was like he was always motivated So that gives you hope for the Kansas City Chiefs because they have such a great player and Patrick Mahomes who's their leader You know their best player is is their quarterback is their leader and the way he is is huge. Do you think? the intensity to beat the Chiefs to throne the Chiefs is Similar to what you guys experience and I ask you from this standpoint and I hope you don't take offense to this But I feel like I feel like the Chiefs are not hated in any way I'd feel like no one dislikes Mahomes No one dislikes Andy Reid you guys and I think it was mainly because of your success But there were people who didn't like Tom for whatever reason there was the ridiculousness with the flake eight the stupidest thing ever people didn't like Belichick, maybe You guys I don't think we're like Completely beloved whereas KC seems like I don't know who maybe people are sick of Travis Kelsey a little bit Like our teams you think is amped up to beat the Chiefs as they were you guys I Think the games changed the player has changed Just as an overall, I mean we look at games nowadays you got guys over here You know dapping up helping guys back back when we were playing the Jets when I first got in the league Bart Scott was mother-effing Billy O'Brien on the sideline guys were fighting before, you know, it's just it's kind of changed And it could be for good or could be for bad. That's for weather for everyone else to determine But and also, you know, the Kansas City Chiefs that the Patriots were on it for 20 years Okay, like when I got there they already had three Super Bowls and they were on a little drought, you know But they were still winning, you know, they went 7 16 and oh they you know 14 win seasons they were still putting out big winning seasons for a long a longer time and You know the Chiefs just haven't been there I'm so I'm sure the Chiefs keep on doing well that people are gonna start hating them too, you know, yeah. Yeah The I want to get into some other stuff about the Patriots and and Belichick and Brady and but let's talk about you going to Fox you did inside the NFL. I enjoyed you on there I wrote that a couple times for SI. Now. You're gonna be on the Fox NFL kickoff show. It's remarkable I don't know if you've seen it Maybe you just know it off the top of your head because you friends with all these people but it is remarkable how every patriot is in media now is on TV, you know, you've got the McCordy's Gronk is part of the Fox family. Everyone knows about the Brady situation McGinnis the TV Bruschi It's like if you're on you were part of our Patriot team good love winners. Yeah people love winners Yeah, and they hate them so, you know you get a little bit of both They're either gonna love your hate you but they're gonna watch you It's like you had no choice but to go into TV basically after after all it's it's I don't know it's uh, You know when you play for an organization like New England and You've had the success that we had over the years that we played, you know It opens up a lot of doors and it's plain and simple. That's that's really what it is The the sacrifice and the efforts that we put into our career helped us after our career and a lot of guys you know, they have that hard work mentality that still want to stay in the game, but may not want to be coaches and And that's what media is, you know, that's what I feel. You know, I get my football fix by Going into a pre-production meeting and I haven't done it with Mike Vick or Charles Woodson or Chris and Thomas or Peter Shrager But you get your football locker room kind of vibe when you do those like when I was on inside the NFL I'm sitting there talking with Phil Simms Patrick, uh, you know, Brandon Marshall Michael Irving, Ray Lewis, James Brown and you have these These meetings where you just get to sit and talk football It's before you go on the lights are shining but you sit and you're talking stories You're breaking football down with people that play football So, I think that's a huge probably reason about it and you know, it's not you know We're used to putting in these crazy hours 14-hour days Seven days a week don't get this year family and media, you know, like you got to do your homework You got to you got to watch all the games, but you know, we can still have a life outside of it, you know These guys are going coach. I mean people always ask me. Why aren't you in coaching and I go You know, I did my time Like I put my my 12 13 14 hour days in and when I would leave work I would see coaches families in the parking lot Seeing the coaches before they would go to bed because they still had another three hours. I ain't doing that Yeah, you know and then if you go somewhere else where it's not like that Then I'm mentally all messed up because well, there's some people that are doing it, you know So it's just I like I'm happy or I'm mad. I'm excited to go out and entertain and talk my knowledge When you were playing and you're playing days towards the end of your career Did you think you would get into TV or did you not think about it while you were playing? I Didn't necessarily think I'd become an analyst and do what I'm doing right now I always enjoyed creating content You know whether it was our YouTube videos our Instagram videos and all the content we build on J around je11 You know that was booming with with the Patriot nation that would always support, you know I always I found a niche in that and and I enjoyed that process of creating content going in and sitting in a you know in a editing room and and Filming up all this stuff and thinking it's gonna be terrible and then cutting it down and then you know having all your other team Because there's a team of people, you know That put put the work in to to get this good content out and I enjoyed it So I didn't know it was gonna be to the extent of what I'm doing right now but I knew you know, I was comfortable in front of a camera and you know, I know I faced for radio, but Thank God I won a lot of games Had it and just tell me were were there other networks like in the running to get your services Was it just Fox like I'd end up at Fox why Fox? Tell me a little bit about joining I want to say any other names there were, you know There was another network that was involved and I sat down and I thought Fox would be perfect You know, I got a couple teammates there with Gronk Brady You know, I'm really excited to get to hang out with you know Charles Woodson and in talk football with Mike Vick and Chris Thompson Peter Schrager and you know Fox is like a If you know the story behind Fox, I mean they were created as This little small sport network with John Madden.

Joe, welcome back to the martek podcast. Thanks for having me back, Ben. Always pleasure to have you on the show. Excited to wrap up our conversation today. We started off talking about if there is too much B2B thought leadership. There has been this influx of everyone writing their thoughts and publishing it. We're focusing more on digital content than ever before. Lots of content, not a lot of quality and a little bit of that as a result of the pandemic. And then yesterday we talked about how to stand out and it's a blend of creating high quality content, but also creating a high volume of content. And it's really a question of volume quality and time. That's always a measure of understanding your audience. Today I want to talk a little bit about evaluating the content marketing that you're doing and the thought leadership that you're putting out there. How do you figure out if the efforts you're putting forward to create unique content actually works? Well, I mean, we're on the mar tech podcast, right? So certainly Marta plays a big role in that just in terms of the kinds of metrics that certainly your audience would be very familiar with. The standard kind of KPIs around driving awareness continuing to sort of nurture, engagement over time, deriving, call to action, are you generating MQR SQL, depending upon the organization that you're in. Those are all, I would say pretty reliable, underlying indicators of the health of a program. But there's a lot more, I think, to understand, are you truly connecting with an audience and kind of shifting how they think. And that's where you're going to get into some more of the attitudinal and behavioral metrics. And so oftentimes, companies might go out and do sort of benchmarking studies around perception of the brand, when do you think of us? How do you think of us? Those sorts of things. But as it relates specifically to leadership, really, I would say one of the best indicators is something that we kind of touched on before is are you actually driving engagement with the right kinds of companies, the right kinds of customer profiles. So it could be people within certain job functions, senior level decision makers, et cetera. And are they coming to you in the right context? So it kind of goes beyond obviously just capturing contact information and ideally getting inbound where people are asking you the right kinds of questions and are eager to enter into a conversation that could help to drive a commercial outcome. One of the biggest takeaways that I have working in B2B marketing is that the end to end marketing stinks. It's really hard to figure out and most companies just aren't sophisticated enough in their marketing efforts to say, okay, someone has engaged with a piece of content, did that drive them to become a subscriber. What was the quality of that subscriber and what was the end outcome of that relationship? And there's also the notion that content is used for demand generation. It's used for nurturing, so it's hard to assign the value to a piece of content when it touches the top of the funnel and the middle of the funnel and at times even the bottom of the funnel. How do you think about evaluating what works in your content stack? We created this great piece of thought leadership. It's a 2500 word article from our CEO about the perspective of our industry and it was consumed by a million people. It got a million impressions to our blog. How do I figure out what the business impact of that thought leadership was? So if we want to start with a more technical view on that question, would be looking at the role and the outcome that each individual content asset is performing, right? So will particular pieces of content encourage somebody to consume another piece of relevant content. Is it driving people toward what might be considered sort of downstream or product oriented information? So kind of shifting from thought leadership into potentially demonstrating buyer intent, those kinds of things. I think the non technical view is, again, a sort of goes back to are we really moving the needle with oftentimes sophisticated B2B buyers who are very savvy. Are removing the needle in terms of how they think on a particular issue. And it's that working in our favor. And it can be tough to quantify that. Sometimes that needs to be soft out through either anecdotal evidence or qualitative research, but I do think it's sort of a blend of the two. You want to have the digital KPIs, if you will, but also to understand sort of the more human side of it. Time for a one minute break to hear from our sponsor, HubSpot. "SaaS hour. Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta is leading the way in sports venues. And right now it's one of the busiest venues in sports, hosting somewhere around 3 million visitors and 50 events a year. It really upped the ante for what's possible for pro sports stadiums. And a lot of other owners are following the trend putting big money into creating and experience for their fans. Take Philadelphia, for example, David Edelman is co owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils and he has plans to build a new flashy facility. He was on the business of sports not too long ago and told us why he thinks building a sports metropolis like Mercedes Benz stadium is a difference maker. In this day and age when all of the teams can really pay the same amount for players, what makes a player pick us for someone else and we think the facilities are really important. Our fans deserve to win championships and deserve an experience commensurate with that. And that's really kind of the goal of creating a world class facility. In part, a talent retention tool That was billionaire entrepreneur David Edelman on the business of sports show about the new facility that he is planning to build in downtown Philadelphia. And of course, you can hear that entire conversation on the Bloomberg business of sports podcasts. Now let's talk to someone who knows a lot about what it takes to run a state of the art sports venue. Steve cannon, he's the vice chair of AMB sports and entertainment, a firm that includes Arthur's sports interest, including Mercedes Benz stadium, Steve. Welcome to the Bloomberg business of sports. Thank you, Michael. Great to be here. When you talk about your stadium, I am amazed by it compared to where the falcons used to play. Tell us about how it has been as compared to other stadiums. Supposed to be one of the busiest stadiums around period, am I right? Well, when you build a $2 billion facility, if you think about it as a factory, Michael, it's not doing anything if it's empty. So it's our job to fill up that factory. We've got ten falcons football games. We've got around 18, 19, 20 soccer matches with our soccer franchise Atlanta United, usually about a half a dozen college football games. We have the 70 finals. This past year. And then as many concerts as we can possibly squeeze in, that plus private events. So we do our best to keep this thing humming. And of course, you're looking ahead to events that will keep it humming as well, including the World Cup, which I know there's a couple of years away, but the planning obviously begins now. Mercedes Benz stadium hosts the Atlanta MLS team. So this is obviously of great importance to you. What kind of steps have you been taking or are you able to take right now to put yourself in position to host one of the World Cup games? Well, we've already been named one of the host cities scarlet, so we've been in probably a year process. We've had all of FIFA come to Atlanta, walk through Mercedes Benz stadium and they've all been wowed number one by the stadium. It really is sort of globally represents the state of the art. It's a phenomenal facility, but they were just as amazed by the soccer culture that we've managed to create here in Atlanta through Atlanta United. So some of these Europeans, they come to the U.S. thinking soccer is a second or third tier sport in the United States and we sort of showed them what a whole match for Atlanta United looks like. And they were absolutely blown away by the level of energy, the rituals, and just the fanaticism of our fan base. So that kind of really excited and it puts us on a very short list for hosting for the World Cup. When you find out, by the way, we know that we're a host city now the question is, will we be for the group stages or for the semifinals or for the final? So that's what we don't yet know. So we're obviously looking to get as much as we possibly can and the back and forth with FIFA continues. You became the world's first true certified zero waste stadium, what does that mean? And can you tell us what it took to get to that process? So it's something I'm super proud of. Michael, the whole organization kind of came together and said, we want to set a standard. We don't want to just be the best facility, but we want to operate in the best possible way. So one of our core values inside of our company is to lead by example and we started that way. We were the first lead platinum certified stadium also in the world. And that's a build standard that we achieved, but true certification is an operating state standard. It means that we divert 90% of all the waste, the refuse that gets created inside of Mercedes Benz stadium, it gets diverted from landfill, which means that either goes to get recycled or it goes to compost, and less than 10% of everything created inside of our building, and it's a lot of stuff will go to landfill. So it's a commitment to the environment and what we're trying to do is demonstrate what good looks like. We're putting a playbook together on the economics behind it, the operating parameters that it took us to in order to accomplish that. And we're going to share it across the entire sports landscape in the hope that other buildings are inspired to do the same thing. Like a best practices, essentially. Absolutely. Steve, I want to ask you about something else that Mercedes Benz stadium has been experimenting with, which is new technology, a new facial recognition ticket system. Apparently you've started doing that over the summer in 2022. And it is for season ticket holders. I bring this up because there's a certain arena in New York City that also uses facial recognition, but in the case of what's happening here in New York, Madison Square Garden has barred entry to critics, for instance, lawyers who work at a law firm that might have sued MSG the company for something separate from the venue and event that they're trying to attend. I just want to get a sense from you. What is your thinking on facial recognition and some of the tricky questions that it raises regarding how a company can use it against people who want to attend events. Our commitment is to creating the best possible fan experience, right? And if there's a way for us to ease entry to get people in and out of clubs with less sort of ID checking, et cetera, that's the whole purpose. But you have

Time now for everybody's favorite segment of the show will visit by my wife, Jean Edelman, co founder here along with me at Edelman Financial Engines and an expert in nutrition Macro Browder Cooking. And with a degree in consumer economics, Jean Thank you. Hi, everybody, always great to share with you. I wanted to continue. The discussion of Ken Dychtwald Candy called was on Rick's show a couple weeks ago. He's head of H wave all about growing old well and Alzheimer's. And just an amazing guy. I hope you heard the conversation but the most important thing and the very first thing that Ken said Inrix. One hour discussion with him was take care of your body. And there's actually a very funny movie with Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep called Death becomes her And they have been given this gift of the fountain of youth and they were told. The only thing you need to do is take care of your body and they don't and what happens is very funny. So let's start talking about taking care of our body and the continued conversation of self care that I have been talking about all these months, so let's start small. Let's try three things. Three things are part of our daily self care. Routine number one is drink water, and how much we need to drink. Each day is based on our our weight, So we just need to do some calculations on that. But for Rick and I are secret is that we feel a picture each morning based on what we know individually what we need to drink each day And so our goal is to finish this picture by six o'clock, so gives our body time to process all that water. And we get a good night's sleep. But water is so important. Yeah, Maybe we're drinking soda. You shouldn't be drinking soda. Yeah, Maybe we're drinking some iced tea. The sugar in it is going to catch up with you. You really need to put water into your daily routine and so figure out a way to make that happen. For us. It's the picture item number two for good self care. And it's very, very important and I know is so hard for so many is sleep, but the key is to create our own individual. Nighttime routine. I know that there's family. I know that there's commitments, but we need to create our routine that we do for ourselves every night. Well, here's some things that we need to do. One. We need to have the room a little bit cooler. We sleep better when it's cooler and to the room needs to be void of clutter. So basically, it should be where you're sleeping. Your side tables, whatever other furniture, but there should not be any magazines. There shouldn't be any clothes that need to be folded and put away. Your sleep area should be pristine and nothing there to remind you of what you need to do. The only thing you need to do in this space is rest. The other thing is that we want to turn off. All electronics. Starting our routine, other than washing our face and brushing our teeth could be a nice shower to wash the day off. It could also be a nice hot foot soak after the foot soak. We could have some nice scented lotion to massage our feet and our legs. I also recommend finding some very light simple stretches to do before bedtime. I have my routine. It doesn't matter how late it is. It doesn't matter what's going on. I need my 40 minutes from beginning to end. By the time I put my head on that pillow And I very rarely give up that time. And so we need to be selfish for ourselves and our long term health because sleep is so important. And then the last thing before we close our eyes is maybe some light positive reading. To fill our mind before we fall asleep so that we have positive in our mind. So one drink water to create your sleep. Routine number three is movement. No, I know that may be difficult during the day based on our health, but we need to move during the day because it circulates our blood and it provides oxygen to ourselves. So I'm going to talk about three yoga poses. And I want you to go look them up. First is called child Pose. The child pose stretches our quads and opens up our lower back. It stretches our thighs or hips or ankles, and it helps relax our body and mind and basically, you could be in child's pose for a minute. Try it for 10 minutes and just breathe and let your body relax. The second post is called Cat Cow. And Again, you can go online. You can look these moves up. But the cat cow provides movement to our spine. It is a gentle flow between two poses that warms our body and brings flexibility to our spine. It stretches the back torso, the neck and softly stimulates and strengthens our abdominal organs. It also opens up our chest, encouraging us to breathe. And slow, deep breaths. Cat cow. Lovely posed to do morning when we get up and definitely before we go to bed at night. And then down dog. Down dog strengthens our whole body, our upper body. Our arms are shoulder or abdomen legs. It stretches the back body or ankles, calves, hamstrings and spying. It calms are mine and stimulates blood circulation. Now, If you're new to yoga, some of these might seem difficult, but try it each day. Try it and you will become stronger and you will learn how to relax with your body. If we can make these three changes for one week. Just see what happens. Better health will be the outcome. So we want to drink water. We want to plan our sleep routine..

"I think it's ridiculous to say gunner a chef T's taking over I do think that's ridiculous. But I I do think it's fair to recognize he's hit certain benchmarks that are impressive and he's kind of getting to where it was Edelman stayed on the roster initially as a punt returner if he couldn't return punts. He never would have made it there was five years before he got a main role in the offense Gunner raszewski led the NFL in punt-return average last year in Wilson all pro team. So that that's the quickest feel. I'm just saying that so far the same boxes have been checked that could end this year and Gunners peaked and that's it. I just want to point out that the same box is hacked. Check to this big hole Ki Marzi the slot receiver like he grabs Jacoby Myers. And then those are my two issues for Gunnar right. Now. The first one I wanted to go over quickly was that I actually reviewed Gunther's is a little bit of a different receiver than Julian Edelman. He is somebody that every single time out in training camp that we've seen him or the preseason. He is actually fared much better playing on the outside than in the slot with somebody that wins more on a vertical route tree than on a quick underneath Juke series type of Route tree tatelman quite of evolved over the years and became a little bit more of an intermediate filled stretcher as well. You'll go back across the field on crossers and over routes and things like that, but eventually Gunner oshetski I think needs to show me a little bit more change of Direction on a diet right is this is he truly that type of guy he kind of strikes me as a little bit more of like a build up speed type of player guy wants to get up the field quickly. Is he ever going to develop that the other thing is we saw Julian Edelman wage? Started covering the team Alex. He would be out there what three hours four hours before the kick-off doing the one-handed catches and in the lighthouse end zone, right? Yeah wage. You need to be up at 5 a.m. Every single morning to get to get from where Julian Edelman was to We're Gonna Roll schefsky was too were Edelman ended up right you need to have that type of work ethic. Type of competitive nature. And if you don't have that then he is test too much ground to cover to get there just going through percent. He has Julian Edelman build himself to NFL super stardom, right? I don't know that anybody else has done that and that's part of what makes impressive. Lowens is a better wide receiver than Marvin Harrison any day of the week and if we're going to say well Harrison, you know had all these moments cuz he played with a great quarterback that helped settlements case, but that's another story life. So because the method for wide receivers is so screwed up. It gives people this argument to say in this is I saw this name the chat. I've seen it all day Torry Holt. Ohtori off should be the Hall of Fame. You know, how can you put Edelman in before hold? I agree. I think Torry Holt's a Hall of Famer. The problem is the process is broken. Same Julian Edelman should be in fact, I don't think you know, it can go hand-in-hand with there were other guys who are deserving Stanley Morgan another Patriot the all-time leader in yards per reception Avid, six seasons of overtime. Yards-per-catch, that's a Hall of Famer. Certainly. Is that is that not a Hall of Fame resume in log Jam at Wide Receiver right now to get into can't and don't even watch him. They just won't acknowledge. It should do anything about it on T that and this is where the position comes in the hall has dragged their heels immensely in in recognizing Evolutions to the game when it comes to positions and specialized positions, right Morten Andersen was the all-time or Gary Anderson was the all-time leading scorer know Morton Morton was the all-time leading scorer for six years did not get in scored more points need else the NFL because he was a kicker r a guy without an argument was the best punter in the history of the NFL. It took him decades to get in we're going to have this conversation again with Matthew Slater on a couple of years. The big one for me is coming next year because next year Devin Hester's eligible and I do not know how you it's it's supposedly they call it the greatest team ever assembled right is what some people call the Hall of Fame. I think Mac Jones would be a third guy for them that they would think just because of what he's done. He's done in Alabama and how smart he is. So I the Justin Fields thing is a nice story and who knows maybe they think he's worthy of the 20th pick. "Cattleman show chat with Josh from the Bay Area. Welcome to the program. Josh, How are you? I'm doing fine. Thank you. Thank you for taking my call. My pleasure. How can I help you? Yes, I am a great question. I'm 57 years old and some significant investment in my rollover IRA, which is about 1.5 million The 100% stock with heavy of course, no diversification that I was gonna wondering. I mean, what do you suggest, if I should take some tax heat and can work some portion Wrote. I are problematic rollover. I haven't And if yes, I mean, how do I decide what kind of personality and things like that? What's your motivation and thinking about moving your ire A to the Roth or some of it? What's your motivation? One more tuition is basically announcing this amount is little bigger, and I don't tell much on Rolled toward her. Left text. Heavy environment account balances that I'm not sure I'm a fan of the idea, Josh. And the reason that I say that is that as you know, when you move the money from your IRA to the Roth IRA, you're going to trigger attacks on the amount of money you move. That's why the future withdrawal is tax free, released Congress. Says that it's going to be tax free. But I don't see the particular advantage. The only reason for doing so, is that you believe that your tax bracket today Is lower than it's going to be in the future. So you'd rather pay the tax today at the lower rate than the tax later at the higher rate, you might be right about that. I don't know. Nobody knows what future tax rates are going to be A and so it's a bit of a gamble. Some advisers have argued Justus, We diversify our investments. You want to diversify your tax strategy as well. So you should have money in both the deductible IRA and a Roth IRA. So that you are diversifying the tax bracket that you're paying on the distributions. I'm not sure I subscribe to that theory because you know if you move half the money from your irate with Roth You're simply guaranteeing that in the future you're half wrong, so I'm not sure I necessarily subscribe to the idea. So it's up to you. I would not be particularly motivated to do it. If we're my account. I wouldn't do it. In fact, I have an IRA A with a bunch of money, and I haven't moved it to a Roth so I'm not sure I would be strongly encouraging you to do it either. No After epi subpoenas, other fight, questioning the sense that a couple of years ago my employer in stores wrote for a lengthy option. Me do things that can be overdone. It started to start contributing. I've been contemplating fully in my Director, but for one case so far What I think about doing it to to rose for one thing. So again, it's the similar conversation. If you believe that your tax bracket today is lower than it will be in the future, that's the answer. In other words, you want to pay the tax. As late as possible. You know, attacks later is better than a tax now and you want to pay a tax at a lower rate. As possible. So along those lines just need to decide what it is that you believe is going to happen in terms of tax rates. It's not as bad I'll tell you this that putting money into a Roth is not as Evil as Converting money to a Roth because put him on the end of the Roth won't force you to pay a huge amount of tax, But it does force you to give up the tax deduction.
