"Enjoyment. And so I don't think that you necessarily need to create these events that require pure suffering. But I think you want to create events that challenge people. But then if they come up short and they come up short for sure. Needs to be, you know, something within reason because there was funny, David Miller, good made of mine. He put up a challenge ride 200 kilometers in December, and I right away I called him up and pulled the piss out of him like 200 kilometers. Yeah, in the month of December. You know, there's obviously different people out there looking for different challenges. But I don't want to I don't want our sport to be described as suffering. Because I don't think that's what it is. No, yeah. And you know, I necessarily don't disagree with that, but I do think I do think it's not necessarily suffering anymore. It's like how far can we push ourselves? It's not really the suffer as much. That's where the festive 500 I think kind of comes in. It's like doing 500 kilometers, especially for people that work and all these other things. That's a big feat and achievement. It's not much of a suffer. It's kind of like leadville, right? Like you do leadville, you know, you are suffering, whether you want to say you are or not, no matter how fast you're going or how good you are. But I'm signed up for unbound this year for the 200 miles. Oh, awesome. Awesome. Yeah, well, I did the hundred last year and I will tell you right now that was about as much as I would like to do. So, but yeah, I think the sport is always looking for a new challenge. And that's where the gravel has come into play. It's kind of the why go do a hundred K road racer Gran fondo when you can go ride 200 miles of pure Kansas chunky gravel and literally experience you experience ten different types of gravel. I mean, all the way from literally riding big rocks and marbles to riding just plain white dirt that you're doing 20 miles an hour over. So yeah, but anyways, so one more question for you because you know I don't want to I don't want to keep you all morning and I wanted to get some of these things out and it's really cool to kind of hear kind of the development of factor and how it kind of went about, especially with you being in Taiwan. But if you could have a cup of coffee with one individual and it seems like you know a orbit an amount of people, you've already had coffee with people that I could only dream to have coffee with. But if you could have a couple of coffee with one individual dead or alive, who would that person be? And how would you take your coffee and why? Well, yeah, I would say, you know, I've already had coffee with Eddy Merckx. So yeah, I wouldn't say, and I think my answer's gonna be somewhat surprising, but I'd actually want to have coffee with Simon matra. Founder of rafah. And the reason why is because I really feel like if there's one person who has changed our sport for the better in the last 15 years, I can't think of anyone more than him..

"One. It's not always perfect, but more likely. Anytime you get into the online realm, that's when there's obviously the whole other burden of server issues and player balancing and stuff like that and it becomes much more messy. That's why battlefields in such a mess right now. That's why we've seen so many of these problems where games just don't work on day one. If they have like a big online component. So for me, my solution now is just to wait. Basically, basically live 6 months behind everyone else. If the game is popular and it worked out and it's a hit, there'll still be playing so many people playing it from 6 months from now. I'll jump in after it's been properly patched. And now I'm playing the game that should have shipped on day one. Instead of having all the frustration, the problem is we as gamers don't learn our lesson. We'll come on here and go. Enough is enough, but then we en masse with still go out and buy the next broken release from EA or Activision or rockstar who or whoever. Not me, baby, never. That was a long time on one story, so we're going to blitz through the next couple. Speaking of good fun games, halo infinite has been given an update, which is music tall is a story comes from the second best video game website on the Internet. That is, of course, games quite dot com. Once again, Eddy Merckx writes the halo infinite XB changes have been announced, and they are going to affect soon. In response to negative feedback, three, four, three industries has announced further steps to help improve the XP and progression systems in halo infinite multiplayer beta, community manager, just sick, I think that's right, sorry, John, sorry, John. Apologies for butchering your name. Ran through the changes on Twitter, saying players can expect increased XV payouts for the first 6 matches each day. Here is the rundown. So first game will be 300 experience points, second, 200, third, 204th, 105th and 6th, also 100 and then 7th plus 50. We believe this increase will help address the slower initial payouts while also benefiting those of you jumping in each and every day, Jon said, when he went on to say that three for three understands that players want to see even more substantial changes to experience points and the studio plan is to deliver such changes, but it might not happen soon. We know many of you want even larger changes and we're committed to doing so, but those will take time. We made this update based on data and player feedback and we'll monitor its impact after we push it live tomorrow morning. As always, keep sharing your feedback. This is the second update to halo and finish XP systems since the multiplayer launch on November 15th. The first added daily play one game challenges, update existing weekly challenges and double deterioration of double XP boosts. These changes represent just the start. So you can expect more in the future. So that's a basically they've made the battle pass a little easier to get along, which is music to my ears. I don't know how you feel about it. Gary, I'm sure you're excited by two. This is another one that I've been following because as you know I've been playing a lot of halo. This is only really my second real experience with a game that has like a battle pass type component. Because I don't typically play a lot of these kind of games. And the other one is fall guys, because that has what they call it the fame path, but it's there. It's their battle pass basically. Is you go up to the levels, you earn cosmetics and kudos and cute little bean costumes and stuff. And it's fun to see your level. We like seeing the numbers go up in video games, right? We'll always be addicted to our dinging and going up. It's not the reason why I play the game that I enjoy playing halo. And I think to me, I mean, I'm just speaking for myself. I don't care as much about the issues with the battle pass as a lot of people who seem to be really focused on progression and rewards are. I mean, it's all just cosmetic stuff, right? Your level number doesn't really mean anything. Players don't see it when you go into a game. So it's not like you get to wear it on your sleeve and brag about it. They can kind of tell based on like the cosmetics you might be wearing all this guy must be played a lot because he has a lot of high level arm or whatever. But for the most part, it doesn't mean anything. They're all cosmetics. It's not like I'm going to get better weapons or things that are going to actually help me play the game. It's just all cosmetics. And then the thing is the cosmetic. If there's a criticism of mind, this is the cosmetics I kind of lame. Like, here's a shoulder piece or whatever. None of it's really that. Well, here's a challenge swap. I don't really care. I think maybe maybe it's just that people aren't seeing the numbers go up quickly enough. They've introduced this new system. But before today, you basically, if all you got was the 50 XP for playing a game, it would take you 20 matches to go up one level. And that's a lot, right? So people are just feeling like it's taking too long to see the numbers go up. But that's all it is. It's nothing tangible. It's nothing real. It's just watching the numbers go up. And my other question about it is I feel like this is an interesting balancing issue for any company that deploys a game that has a battle pass. Is how do you find that back is obviously there's all kinds of players that play at different levels as people like me that play, you know, maybe every day or maybe a couple of times a week. But then there's people that are grinding 24 7. So there's people progressing through the battle pass all kinds of different speeds. How do you find that balance that is satisfying for everybody? Because now that now that they're adding to the XP gains and making it easy to progress through the battle pass, this season is supposed to last several months, right? What do you then do with the players that burn through all the content, hit level, whatever it is 100. And now you've got another complaint, which is, well, I've burned through it too quickly. Now there's nothing for me to earn. So it's like you've got to kind of feel like this almost kind of a no win scenario with his battle passes trying to find a progression that suits everybody. Someone's always going to complain. Yeah, I think that's a tricky part of it because I mean like it's really interesting about a passing. I don't care about it, but I sometimes find myself looking at the battle pass and being frustrated by it even though and then I have to remind myself wait. You don't actually care about this, which says a lot about the psychology of how games are designed to almost kind of like trick not trick you, but like suggest the fact that you should care about this subconsciously. And it's the idea of you might be playing a game multiplayer, but you still to a degree want some sort of indicator of your time invested and progress. Remember back in the day when we played multiplayer games and we just played them and that was it. There was no like, you know, you've made it this far in a battle party. You've unlocked this and this, we played, let's take it pretty far back. I don't know quake or GoldenEye or whatever counter strike, what it may be. You played three hours of counter strike and then you turned it off and that was it..

"That, um, that is comparable to this team. As far as you know, when they clan or the record at a certain point. I can't remember exactly what it was. But that was the best he might play with US Giants he might played on self. Very disappointing to lose Skip on it in the first round. Yeah, you guys the 2000 team was the last team to be the first team in the majors to 90 hasn't happened in 21 years and then and then it was you guys are the only San Francisco teams ever to be the first teams to 90. The other one was 1921. Johnny McGraw doing his think so you got you. You guys on this team are the first the only teams in Giants history to be the first team to 90. Uh, yeah, but I know it's crazy, isn't it? Um, by the way, just you know, it's funny, Sean. Well, yeah, Go ahead. Do what you say. Well, I just think in 2000 expectations coming into the season were pretty high for that club Totally did it was for it was the first It was the first year in that new ballpark and Didn't start off well, but we end up with the best record in baseball at home that year, but this is a different group altogether. Totally. You guys had bonds. Kenton Birks in the 345. Billy Beane told me he thought that was the best 345 in baseball history. And and this team. This team doesn't even know who's hitting 3rd, 4th and 5th every day. One day, it's Tyra Strada. One day Slater in the three Hold Estrada in the five hole. You know what I mean? So wage wage juniors. We'll get into him in just a second. I don't know did a quick digression because you mentioned that 98 season burned into my head? That tough, tough loss of course. Field. Navy Perez offer Rob Men And then I remember the Monday playoff game at Wrigley, and then I never asked you about this show. There's a little bit of off the beaten path that 98 game at Wrigley. Tough loss. Steve Trachsel. What the hell was that? And then rod that got shot in? Seriously? What the hell was that? Sean? Human room. The thing that the thing that really hurt was was Rod Beck coming in to get that safe for the Cubs, his 51st save and he had been your team made a year earlier. I never asked you about Rod back. You guys have a good relationship. I love him and I miss him. Yeah, He's the best. Uh, Everybody had a good relationship a shooter because you're just happy. Go lucky Great Teammate. Just, uh, man. It's just It's sad to talk about him because, uh, us us she was still around. Um, Yeah, I know he was. He was great. I mean, I'll tell the story in, you know, in my first year in the big leagues Might have been my first start at home. A Candlestick. Um, I come into the weight room after a pitch and he had closed the game. And I wouldn't do something. Do some tubing or whatever it was. Yeah, I walk in, and he's on the on the stationary bike with ice pack on his elbow and his shoulder smoking a cigarette. And drinking a Coors light and I looked over and I was like, Hey, I just smiled like this is I go. This is the big league. Yeah, that's all time. I'm gonna I'm gonna burn that in my brain forever. Sean, that's fantastic in the South is the best and that hurt when he got that save against you guys In that game, he got Joe Carter on the ground. I think a comebacker I want to say And that was his 15 1st save that year, and he had been a giant the year before he got the double play ball from Eddy Merckx from Rich Murray. That's right, Daddy. Murray. Eddie. My said Rich. Yeah, Yeah. Eddie Murray. I mean, Yeah. 97 obviously daily. I think 97 saves thought that maybe he had, uh maybe he was losing a little bit, uh, physically brought in Berta Hernandez from the White Sox. Yeah. At the deadline in Roberto Close close some games that year was still shooters job, but you know Roberto was kind of the next man in line there. You could tell that the right because it was kind of on the wall and then you know he goes the Cubs the next year and like you mentioned 51 saved, so he wanted to prove to everybody, especially the Giants, and what a way for it to end for him and Harry Carey had passed the the off season before so You had the big balloon out right field of Harry's face. Uh, weird. Yes. Yeah. Just looming over a year. It was a really weird thing. And then Steve Trachsel goes out there and does what he does. And I think we had Mark Gardner on the mound. Cardi was pretty good. Well, he gave up. That's good. Yeah. Give it four runs. Yeah, wasn't bad and then And then we have a chick. We have a chance with shooter on the mound. We have a chance to tie the game. I believe with one swing of the bat and who comes up Joe Carter. I mean, you know, World World Series hero. Uh, what was it? You know, 10 years prior eight years prior to like, maybe this Maybe this is this is the right guy to be up right now. One big swinging the bat. We're back in this game and And a little bit of a buzzkill. There was Burke's hurt because I'm looking at, you know, he'd only pinch hit in that game underway. Didn't start him. Was he hurt? I don't remember him being hurt. No, I don't. But he would have been in the lineup. Had he not been. I mean, if you're able to pin shit, he probably wasn't hurt. Well, he just come over to the team. He had just come over to the team mid season. I guess I'm from the Rockies. Yeah, I remember. I forgot. You do it on the team in 98 I picture Ellis is 99 2000? Yeah. Yeah, that's that's where I remember him. But yeah, he must have been on the came over in the trade deadline. Trade. Uh, he he traded by the Rockies to the Giants for Darryl Hamilton, Jim Stoops. Nice trade by saves. Yeah..

I really bad because it's like one of the things i used to love watching but i haven't i haven't i think i just i think you have see properly immerse yourself in it and i just didn't and so because i didn't ask myself in it i felt i couldn't get into it. I mean. does that make sense. Do wasn't popular immersed in it. But i was watching cavs calf wanna stage in that interested. It'll be an a. And then he wanted another one. I'm like this is getting good. So i just watched the final stages of the stages that he was in with the shower on so some of the flat sprint stages just to see if he could equal and surpass. Eddie merckx course. I love the final stage of the tool. When going ran the show cillizza in any just prayed when is but of course the spin. The end is where it's all about. They did the reuter a team. Things slightly differently this year. And then it is obviously. It's you win It's really really significant and He he didn't quite get it was like a smack is handles know the end kind of disappointment and frustration at not getting his lead at right and not making the right move at the right time when he done that on on a few occasions so that was enjoyed it. And you can sense like you know. He's now equal with the great belgian eddy. Merckx on number of tour stages one So i wonder having not won a stations. Twenty sixteen having a five year..

Ah kind of social media last night. This clip emerged of him Expressing his frustration. Shall i say at towards his mechanic a problem with his bike before the star of yesterday stage and it didn't show him in a great light. It's funny because you can juxtapose it with some footage of him embracing eddy-merckx very warmly at the star. You know a mechanic. Mechanical whatever and then to make any s. to b. s. Two forgot to forget about the grudge might hold and intervene. So i to me it. We know that. "World famous. Still henry shell from the pacific in southern california. Here then phil hendrie. Thank you thank you so much. The tour two fronts. You guys been watching this little bit of it talking about it. I haven't talked about it. i like it. It's it's fun to watch the countryside that they're going through quite breathtaking. I don't understand after that. I don't get it again. Frankly i don't either. But what i like about it. I used to ride a ten speed. Because i did for my health like in the early eighties. I had all kinds of. I don't want to get into your feeling depressed. And every kill. Tell everybody. But i needed to exercise. Put it that way and exercises great for everything not only physiologically but also psychologically helps your mood. I started and then i was in china. I told you guys Many of you all of you ad nauseam. yes okay. Yeah we know the china's going to tell it again. Okay yes sir out. So i went to china. And i wrote through the countryside of china on a ten speed and became very interested in cycling so the two fronts has a certain it holds a certain charm for me. It is a very beautiful the way that covering they're covering it nowadays. Nbc the european networks. I mean they have all kinds of aerial shots. They have Motorcycles of some kind that are traveling alongside of the cyclist in front of them. So you've got really good camera angles. And they're going through some as you mentioned some lovely villages you'll see the the farmland the sheep and the cheeses. Please see the cheeses see. Look ask a question margaret you go through the aerial shots. Show you the beautiful farms and you can. Well imagine the milk made and the cheese. I don't know yeah the milkmaid and the cheese when you look at the form and you see a cow and you can see some fraud. Jesus all right margaret. We have to go into the frog route. You're pissing me off all right anyway. I mean i understand with ms green means because it looks like there's probably cheese. Yeah there's going to be cheesed jack. They probably got wine. They got cheese the great food. They've got nice. People all got nice people. Now henry remember when you were all about. You got back from france with at one trip talking about how you got into it at the picasso museum all right. Well ain't like that anymore okay. People change man as the facts change. So does me your phil hendrie anyway. Jeff doubter is joining us from temple city california and jeff. You've been watching the a tour de france as as we all have And people were asking me. Why am i talking to you about it. you know. it's really interesting misery. Thanks a lot The reason why you're talking about is because i happen to be an individual very interested in Keeping you know the environment as Free of Carbon since i possibly can and keep it as free of toxins and waste material and thank cycling as i have said to you and i know you and you and you and you Would you say you and you and you you're talking about us. I guess i'm sorry i missed. I'm sorry mr gray general. Great i am. I am talking about you. But i'm talking about all the audience that cycling represents I guess you could say the original fast transit before that well we have horses but that is the use of raw ammo family. Emo power and animal animal. I'm sorry i am an will power. As opposed to man. Local melting himself Across the countryside using something other than just his own legs it was development of the by cycle. Let me ask you something here before we go any further this whole thing with by cycle. Let's knock that off pronounced. jeff okay. I saw. I've heard about it where they were talking about the by cycle shorts. I know but that's not how you pronounce it. It's bicycle and if you want you can just say cycle well. Most people cycle anything cycle could be some sort of physiologic period. Where you're expelling. So did you know what. I'm talking about right. Yeah i totally do all right. So tell me about the tour de france Jeff as you understand it. I don't think we need to know names necessarily but how it how it looks overall. What the the scoring is like. What what what the the writers are going for during these these are individuals stages right you ride the tour to france in individuals stages and once days maybe twenty miles the other one maybe thirty miles and they have The sprints and they have the mountain climbers and they have here french different competitions within competition. Okay to To score points and so like there's this one. Good mark cabbie dish. he's british. He's a real good sprinter and they have another guy Talk talk j. Or some. He's the beard That is what is the guy's name. Todd todd jeep. He's from so then. He duct flutes slovenia. That's just said man. yes slovenian. That's lavinia oh sorry so yeah. He's the overall leader but then they have the individual guys that are winning the individual stages. Okay and that's why. Like for instance that one dude marquette avenue one thirty four stages you know and Thirty four stages in this race. Yeah i i don't know he's once they said he's he's one is many stages as this guy named eddy merckx sued the overall. He can't do this day the six he's talking about individual stages one over the course of many tour de frances correct word. Aren't you talking jeff. About the fact that disband cavendish one thirty four stages over the many tour default that he's been in well..

"There was a great headline last week in the newspaper. Nils win stage. Twelve of the tour de france. Unfortunately it wasn't me. It was a guy named nils polit. German guy he won stage twelve of the tour de france and then the next day or the day after mark cavendish. Who's an australian. He won his thirty fourth stage of the tour de france. It's over quite a number of occurrences of the tour de france which is an annual race made up of twenty or twenty one stages so he's won thirty four stages which ties the record. Set by eddie merck's now these are all probably four names to you while they're four names to me because i'm american. They're all people from other countries. But eddie murphy says the greatest of all cycle bike racers. He was he won five tours to franz. Who won a bunch of other great tours. Want every other major race in cycling in europe over the course of his career. He was definitely considered the best writer of all time. So mark hamill has tied his record for wins which is very amazing merck's amongst all the other things that he's famous for unquestionably again the greatest cycle racer while time he had a really simple bit of advice for people that asked him how to become great like he did and he said ride lots now he was belgian so he probably didn't say it in english like that but that was basically he said essentially do a lot of training. I'm gonna talk a little bit about that in the episode today. This is the secrets of product management episode number eighty eight. I'm your host. There was a bit more than a minute but we will not not slide impressed. Francois we're monday and yes. Some writers on light rest day they could sing the line. Mondays because On grant tours. Usually it's mondays. Don't it was a good effort. I mean they the the picking the guitar picking part was a little bit. I mean yeah no no was. He was well applying. You could tell you rehearse quite a bit. But no i mean he was great fun and As a good way to actually go great entry and to be in a just just a tip to to be inside the minute you know you can. You can speed up the table. there we go. Well thanks for that. Tim was really great for under. If you'd like to the competition to win three months sapiens go to the cycling podcast to common. Thanks very much indeed them again. We wouldn't be here without their support. And we're very grateful. Let's go to another question. Hello everyone my name. Is anthony from dayton. Ohio and my question is in regards to the state of the white jersey with the gce contenders getting younger and younger. Nowadays you almost have to win the yellow to earn the white jersey. What do you think the tour organizer should do to spice in this. Backup especially with the contender. Staying younger for a longer period of time. Do you think that once he when yellow. You shouldn't be eligible for wait anymore or do you think they should make the white jersey and over thirty jersey. Thanks your question onto something. We've been talking about white jersey. M you know is a bit. I don't agree that that disqualifying a writer from winning. If they've worn the yellow jersey would work because it would then be awarded to and worn by the second or third best writer on dc potentially. I'm it rings a bit hollow. Doesn't it fingle wearing the white jersey when forgot. Char's the rightful. Where're yeah about. Because it's so because of the sponsors in us companies You know paying for for these jerseys. And if you don't if the jerseys not worrying during the you you couldn't ask gatra to where the yellow jersey for an hour then the whites for an hour on the poco. Some last year remember he won. Our new jersey didn't win so i mean it's happened. I mean as everybody knows things were nine hundred sixty nine eddy merckx all jerseys on offer you know and you could. I mean it was a consolation prize for writer to think. Oh i'm only where in this. Because i i was second to so and so so. I don't think the idea of giving him giving jersey to somebody else's a good idea the age limit. It's an endless discussion. Because if let's imagine they take it down to twenty four twenty three and then for you know and then these generated you know this team generation sorts of kind of disappears. And then you're back to normal. But i mean then all of a sudden al. How many Under twenty three riders. Will you have an integral tour. So they could just a cycle that we're in This might not be A lasting trend. Who knows am the the the the suggestion of grey jersey for the over three five riders. As as been many times. I've been could be nice. Shades could be cool. I mean would sponsor it lots of companies.

But obviously with the biosensor i was able to fine-tune mind nutrition plan. Because it's something that you see in real time and okay you have a plan of eating every twenty five minutes. But with the live monitoring i can modify think okay. I need to actually eat every twenty minutes. When i'm doing this sort of ride or every fifteen minutes when a hard workout see i. It's been super beneficial for fine-tuning energy and take you know one eye opening realization was alcohol and especially beer. Beer really really spikes the blood sugar so just reaffirmed like okay. No wonder i feel poorly after drinking a beer or no wonder. I sleep poorly after drinking beer. Because this is what it does to my body. I mean every once in a while you need a drink a beer just to for your mental health and relax a little bit but it's good to know that like all right well. Common dish your stay on the tour line on and you were here to witness a piece of history and i mentioned you've seen probably most if not all of his statements. Well you missed a couple of star. This tour missed a couple of star of this tool might have missed in paris depending on which years went into parish for the final day. But yeah i did stand on the finish line. And and just think back to that historic moment really in chateau ruined two thousand and nine the ninth of july the same date. Well there we are. I didn't know that actually it was. It was an extraordinary really to witness it. And i must admit when i wasn't here at the star of the tool knowing that this was one of the potential stories that might really the race. I was kind of hoping that he might wait till balanced to win the first one for purely selfish reasons. But i think you know the testimony She's comeback really is the fact that he's come back to the tour de france. I'm one four stages just as he did in two thousand sixteen which was the last time he won any stages in the tour. I do take his point about comparison between himself and eddy merckx. I mean not the same types of rider at all but the beauty of this particular record state wins is that it is kind of open to anybody. In theory time trolleys could win. Thirty four tour de france time if they had not in twenty year career. Marie leblanc with a comeback and increase the number of time trials. I mean eddy. Merckx is thirty. Four wins were gathered between nineteen sixty nine and nineteen seventy five sixteen of them time trials but he won flat stages he won mountain stages and i think the fact that communist drawn level with that record is in any way an attempt to compare the two riders but it is a phenomenal record. I mean the fact that communist manager match that when he really only had one discipline. I mean yes. There are lots sprint. Some years particularly in his real heyday two thousand eight nine ten. You know half a dozen more opportunities for him to win. He could afford to lose a few and still bag. Four five. Six stage wins a year but the fact that he has won thirty four sprint stages of the tour i think absolutely extraordinary and when you factor in the years two thousand seventeen eighteen nineteen and twenty when he crashed as a result of this again incident in twenty seventeen finished miles outside the time limit a laboratory in two thousand and eighteen remember. We stood up. That guarant- thomas at one stage the last rider inside the time limit was around thirty one minutes down. Mark hamill was over an hour down and because of the finish line. The whole tour had to stay up there and wait for communist across the line before you know it. It was really symbolic day. Because we saw thomas basically taking a stranglehold on the yellow jersey and cavendish both of the same era but seemingly a totally different injury. You know what's also remarkable for me is thinking about all the sprinters who have emerged over the last thirteen fourteen years and appeared to knock come off his parts. You know marshall kissel even like dylan granola a couple of years ago. We were of the view that these young sprinter to capt emerging. We're we're we're gonna finish communist and he's seen them all off. I mean over a remarkable period of time. I say the you know one of his points. He makes where he doesn't want to. It doesn't want to view his two wins as a whole two volume. Each one individually. I kind of appreciate that tonight more. Because i think this is a really hard fought won. They're all difficult but there are times when it looks. He makes it look quite easy. This really hard tonight. It a lot to do and it was a chaotic finish and you could tell him. The post stage set peaking that he had gone very very deep indeed which might have implications over while sunday stage in particular. Also when when you win thirty four stages of the tour franz obviously they come they come all be the same. I mean if mario cipollini another great sprinters that twitter of the saguenay. Serie one all sprints the same way mark governors on this sort of france as i said before one is a little bit the cipollini way with with the train but remember when he came back You know To win in twenty sixteen in all those years that we were all the time. it's the end of trains. You know i. It's not up to the individual talent to do. The he was also able to win. Sprints like this the. I'm to last long. When when the of the the by definition of the mentality volition of the even the strategy of the tactic and is still there is is really remarkable. Could you can always say because it's a fact that okay There aren't any great sprinters left there. Were probably not many the stars of colombian. But i mean we ever seen in. Friendlies up onto tall absentees are always wrong. I mean so i mean. It's not governors fought if peter sagan crash and the crash. I mean you know is. There is during the year that that mattered and i mean one by one day. They're the you know. The sprinters were had a chance to challenge. Him are gone and that the second aspect of i wanted to to to point out. Of course we will get back to it. But it's the the the di goal making machine of the quickstep oof bike and then train. And because what's even more interesting. Striking surprising with the quickstep train is that you could understand the okay. The change the last part of the rockets. You know the base remains the same. It's not the case you know. They didn't have team the clerk Five years ago they didn't have casper s green ten years ago. The.

"At him differently this toward the needed last time. We'll be clever to do that. I mean if if you're rog nation last year dominated dominated the tour only to lose it in extra time in a way. You know it it. It's to put pressure on pope. Maybe the the real the could thing to do is to is to be on his all the time. Like you're not you know you. I'm here you're not going to sign up slowly in many ways. So Yeah i i think know maybe ways to try to topple a pug is is to try the you know. Act on his nerves a little bit. Because late last year he had kind of innocence. And and you know under the victory of the of the surprise youth but now the pressure is enemies not on rug that much anymore and the the other little funny thing you find if you look at the results of their results their placings in into the front stages in last year in this tour they keep swapping places. There's always one top of the other or one like yesterday rog wasn't up wrought of rogin and today the rug wasn't top of of bog in two the other way around so this little old inside fight between the two is going to very intriguing for longtime cold war and this is this hierarchy already developing just just two days into the race Where you know we fancied this very open race but these to pray challenging stages have drawn. I am you know. Obviously a pocket charen rog. Late says the g. writer to who just seemed to be on a very slightly higher step to to everybody else and there's already daylight between them. And and you know. I mean darren thomas is now you know almost thirty seconds. Dione which is is is not insignificant. Atoll 'em and the car repairs is is still up there but also having lost a a bit of time too so you know. The signs are pretty ominous for the race. The we could just see another shootout between a rock and pockets. Are it seems ridiculous to say that two days into three race. But it's often the case. Isn't that the these tough early stages serve of. Do set the tone. What's astonishing also about. Thomas is that he didn't was not caught up in the first crash at all but both pagan rock were so he has a super team. Or whatever and it's just fascinating to see that they tried you know we saw today. They had a struggle for dominance at the head of the race forcing guys like matt damon maharidge forcing out You know the lead out guys opposite phoenix. Were all all trying to get at the front. All trying to maintain control of the race and they succeeded in doing that for quite a few kilometers. If i can recall correctly at the end it came to nothing also credit to the to the brutal monuments of the cycling because the first time we went to milton. Twenty eleven Than cut eleven was. Was you know all the guys who would be the main protagonist in that tour. Were already there in britain. Those you could win these lopez they say of brittany and in a way you know. It's it's it's it's of course much shorter and there's no no corner whatsoever but in the meantime it's true i mean the the these little climbs by two different standards proved decisive but really good tests in all of of the strength. You know at play interesting you mention at the two thousand eleven. The first time the race came although the went through before nineteen forty seven. It did oh your time but the night went through nine kilometer time trial. Yeah but it never finished. It never finished. Yeah that's right but it never finished top of the climb. No in the past was the first year. And that's interesting because that's when cates cycling knowledge currently goes to extend to doesn't i mean i mean we. We've been learning them k. By your immersion in cycling. We mentioned last night podcasts. At you you really kind of fell in love with the sport during the tour last year. And so i've been scratching my head wondering how you how you have gained so much knowledge so quickly and you've you've kind of revealed how you've done. It is quite remarkable story. Okay so not to sound like a total loser here but Yeah so that season the twenty twenty season after of course the tour de france and world and then lesion or the classics and then late. Jiro all through into november. While i would wake up. Because i live in america we wake up at five in the morning. Six in the morning sometimes seven the welte start a little later so it was nicer I would watch cycling Sometimes you three four or five hours in the morning would work as a writer Writing about architecture. Whatever i was reading about and then i would work until six seven and then from six to seven to midnight i would watch old races and so i started you know at that time. Twenty nineteen. I watched every grand tour monument back to two thousand eleven that way either in highlights or like if the full thing was available i mean this is also of course not to. It was quasi-legal methods. I guess sometimes sometimes it was youtube. Pilots whatever. I could get all the way back to twenty eleven. I mean i mean we've been teasing you know not knowing anything therefore the two thousand ten thirty two fronts. Never having in kinds of andy schlick by so you. You've you've done a bit more than that because you've been reading books as well as some of the older history and you know who had emergences. There's a there's a period when my husband before we go to bed. We would watch like an eddy merckx documentary or sunday. Inhale the remco even the pull of the of the of cycling jared. Thanks very impressive. I mean you certainly Gained an awful lot of knowledge and understanding of the sport. 'em so there's of his atip anybody wants to really Am immerse themselves. It's every monument and every grunter. I mean of course. I don't know who wanna three sacks bank in two thousand twelve really notable ones that i do know for example again devil game two thousand fifteen when the cross blue guarantee us off the road and peter's again one later on you. I watched that one. you know. once there's i have colleagues parlaying win that one. I thought that was peterson. You'll know that one. Yes it's like watching netflix. Series to francis so different season hundred and seven has been watched the one thousand nine hundred nine tour de france and being american. Well wait till you get to nine thousand nine hundred in for a real show..

"De France. Team this year, the garage a care package switch them, just now he will come into that sort of France team in it. Well, it raises all kinds of interesting possibilities for the tour where we might see a very strong team, any of us up against very strong individuals wage You know, your line-up right fog. It's something. I'm not really inquired about and I'm assuming there's there's a lot of competition for places. I don't leave likes of Civ Prevail, silver coverage, the mix again, having he, of course, cracked out of the Giro. But there are probably thirteen or fourteen Riders. Who World certainly be good enough to ride for NES NES Grandy's during the turbo Gina. How many places still up for grabs, or is it pretty much? I think there, there are about twenty nine Riders get enough, but but I mean, Civic off has returned to racing at the tourist Switzerland and that may well be with a bow tie to put him in the, to a team game. The balance of that team, right? It's going to be very difficult because, you know, they were talking about 3:00 normally protected, Raiders in Gig Harbor, sand, Kara pass. But now you throw Richie Porte into the mix as well. Who's really in the form of his life. I would say. And of course, finished on the podium last year and month. So difficult decision because you do need. You need some some work horses in there to, you know, kids have a cough, be there, purely as a domestic perhaps, but it's yeah, difficult decisions not many places left in that team, I wouldn't have thought. So the original Port winner of the critics gave me for the first time in his career and we'll talk about the dolphin in the next part. Did you see the list of the weekend of one-day races or so? One week stage races of Richie, Porte as one having a list in front of me, but a palmyra, as far as those races are concerned. So lights of cut Catalunya, Pioneers Dothan a, and so on. And so on which only Eddy merckx had? Emulate? All had had one before him. Well, I mean better than addresses, any remarks never won the children under he never went on warning, light never was dead. Perry tour or the tour Down Under the two big things. I'm not Australian. So I can find I'm not, I'm not being dismissive of June and then under at all, but that is a race that Richie Porte has made his own wage Alpha stead and Rhonda I'm seeing that correctly. And that was, that was an exciting race to me earlier. One ahead of Mark Cavendish, but only just merely. I had a great leader cam, just lost his job and but finished very well indeed. And looks in great shape, I would say maybe even better shape than he was in Turkey. So, and apparently discussions with eminent, or have been held with Patrick LeFevre boat, whether he carries on next year with the clinic. Quick-Step Mark, Cavendish Daniels remaining tight-lipped or not? Well, thought, well, we did. We had some concerns about the prospects of pizza, Sargon, and his Entourage joining the clinic Quick Step. And what that might mean for Mike, this is future because, you know, their relationship hasn't Nestle. Really been the rosiest over the past two or three years. And well, that that potential obstacle is no longer a factor..

Without cycling commentator Paul Sherwen, summer wont sound the same
"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Without cycling commentator, Paul Sherwin summer won't sound the same summer is going to sound different over the weekend, beloved cycling commentator, Paul Sherwin died at his home in Uganda at age sixty two the causes suspected to be heart. Failure Sherwin a former British cycling champion and toward a France domestic became well known to American audiences for pairing with Phil Liggett to provide commentary on the tour to France, while the achievements now tainted of Lance Armstrong captured the imagination of the American public and caused a cycling boom that easy and entertaining commentary of Sherwin Liggett kept us watching through the scandals and beyond and while the taint of doping remained stuck to the sport. Even if we can't always quite believe what we see. It is always been a treat to watch the broadcast the tour to France. And then later, the tour of California has been compelling entertainment, part grueling sport event and part gorgeous travelogue, always comes. Need by the smart funny and intelligent, commentary of Sherwin Leggett. I met Sherwin in two thousand four when I hopped onto the final week of the tour de France to see Armstrong break the record for most victories in the world's most famous cycling race. I spoke to Sherwin in league in the press room before the time trial up Albadou as and as their fans would expect. They were gracious filling in a novice about the legendary climb and its place in cycling history. Liggett thirteen years throw-in senior generally received most of the credit for his emotional, witty commentary and phrases like digging into his suitcase of courage, but Sherwin was the ballast on the team keeping it on track. Dropping in historical tidbits on both cycling and countryside. This castle was built in fifteen seventy on Roman ruins Eddy Merckx once pulled over here for a nature break the to describe themselves as an old married. Couple traveling stage two stage in the same car. Perfectly in rhythm with each other. They were such a joy to listen to that one could tune into the tour. France early on July morning, just to see what was happening and still being thrilled. Three hours later. That's what makes great sports commentary.
