Beau Hill And Adrian Vandenberg

"Okay as I mentioned to interviews for you this week we get started first with producer Beau Hill after that, you'll hear from Guitarist Adrian Vandenberg, but first my conversation with bow hill about some of the great records he produced, and some great behind the scene stories about those records. He's I on the Eddie Trunk podcast enjoy. Bo! How are you? I'm great. Thanks for having me on great. Thank you ma'am. Thank you, Sir! Thanks for taking the time. So I guess before we get into your history and some of the old older stuff that you've done which records I'd love to ask you about and bands you worked with I'd love to ask about. Let me ask you what you do these days. Let's get to the current times for Bow Hill, because I know most recently. Your name came on my radar again from our mutual friend Mark Schenker and I know you remixed the kicks album. Blow my fuse, which you originally did not produce, so you're still in the game to some degree mixing and doing some production where Primarily just just mixing in it it. It came about of a weird cottage industry. My my wife. Several years ago was bugging me to put up a website and I was going. Oh Man I don't WanNa do that that just it just, didn't it? Kinda made my skin. Call a little bit. And but anyway I I gave in after a while. And then all of a sudden I started getting contacted by bands from around the world that I had never heard of never met never spoken to they just they reached out through via the website and said you know. Hey, we've got. We're having some troubles with this particular song. Could you help us out? Or could you mix it for us? Or what have you and I said sure, and so then they went back and told their friends that were in bands, and then they contacted me and then before I, know it I've got this unintended consequence. Putting up my website, and now all of a sudden. You know I'm I'm. Mixing five o'clock in the morning and am I keep doing it. 'cause I just love doing it. It was there a time both were you completely checked out of the business? Did you completely drop out of the music industry at any point? Well. Maybe, yeah, maybe for a for a little while there was And then, and then this happened. I mean you know I've always. Had My my my big toe and if you will But. You know I've certainly over the. Course of years you know I've bought and sold a couple of other businesses and done some things to. Keep me busy and keep things moving forward, but You Know Music and mixing primarily these days is truly my passion. The production aspect of making records now. Is. As you know a million miles away from where was back in the day But you know right now it's a it's labor of love that I just enjoyed nine. Yeah I was GONNA. Ask You about that because you said you're more on the mixing end of it. Versus the production side of course back in the in the eighties with all these records and bands that you'd worked with you doing it all. You're producing as well. Why did that end of it sort of go away for you? And why did you gravitate more towards the mixing stage versus producing? It was I. It's primarily monetary. Monetarily driven Most bands can't afford to have a producer. Let alone afford to go into a proper studio, so a lot of a lot of guys are in the digital universe now. And they make records in their garage or in their basement or wherever they can and. Then at the end of the day, you know they can still have a little bit of budget. Leftover to you know. Have somebody like me. Come in. And you know. Put The final touches on what it. Is it difficult because I have a lot of friends that mix and produce, but and they'll tell me when they're brought in just to mix something. It can be difficult if the stuff wasn't produced well or recorded well initially that it can be a real nightmare, and it can be almost impossible to work with sometimes. Do you run into that or do you sort of that that out before? You agree to mix something now. I kinda vet that out, and and I'll be the first one to If somebody sends a song, and if it's either so poorly recorded, or if it's just you know garbage in garbage out. Names go on. It I. would just as soon you know? Send the project back and just with deepest regrets and say hey. I'm really sorry, but I don't I. Don't think that That this up my alley. And And then kind of beg off that way.

"Podcasts. This is the Eddie trunk podcast. And he trunk back with you as a mentioned coming up a little bit later on Marty Friedman. But first we welcome Phil collen who called my Sirius XM radio show on the day. Def Leppard found out they were going into the rock and Roll Hall of fame pretty crazy day a lot of excitement in the deaf leopard camp who at the time we're in Sheffield England their hometown when they found out they were going into the hall of fame. So we talk to fill about that. And get some thoughts about it. And that's what I have for you to start off on the trunk podcast. Enjoy congratulations. But how are you feeling today? Thank you. Great. And it's Lee. Yeah. So if your news and more more pretty one was assigned because you know, for years, you know, the way guys what you in northville, get really offended by that would be more about that. We were sort of thing so gone. It's quite frost as well. But it kind of finally, you know, the defense get that why. And it would be good guy from because that awesome. You know, fill one of the things that I find with all the bands that I've always like, you know, I'm a fan myself, and that I beat the drum about getting into the hall of fame. We have been ignored for a long time. Is that a lot of the artists essay? But but a lot of a lot of the artists will say things like when they they've been overlooked. They'll say things like, well, you know, who cares? You cares. It cares. And it's you know, it's a fan thing. And all that. And then when they actually when the day comes like the day has come today for you to find out you're actually going in does it change your feeling about in a little bit to you? Then suddenly because most of the acts tell me, then all of a sudden, it kinda hits them, and certainly when the event rolls around and kinda hits them and said, they say, yeah, I guess we get it. Now. This is pretty cool. Well, what was your take in the years leading into it? When you heard that from fans, and how do you feel do you feel any differently today about it? Before. I absolutely didn't give a. Didn't bother me didn't care. It's I'll get an literally go way Philly that she if more fans enough because it's like, but for the band for the brand for everything else. It's untested more Texan emails today than I've had any other Reuven pretty much in you know, he's to also yourself. And so this Oviously means more on actually mean more to the to the band, you know, on a. You know, kind of a finding that little or whatever it takes to be actually, you know, I thought one of the things that plying the Super Bowl and doing all that stuff. And, you know, get a diamond out like on goes along with that thing. It really puts a, but it really is good. It's a big deal. It really puts it really puts a button on. What has been an incredible twenty eighteen for def Leppard doesn't it from?.

"Paul muchappreciated one final interview on this special eddie trunk podcast paying tribute to vinnie and that is with anthrax drummer charlie bonetti who had a huge history with the guys here's charlie calling in the day after we found out that we lost any paul at the age of fifty four years old charlie banana t talking vinnie on the eddie trunk podcast hey charlie thanks for taking a few minutes men and i know you were close and condolences it's system awful day yeah it's a it's a very awful day and you know i i've been talking to people you know pretty much all day last night i was beside myself because of it it's funny how this works nowadays you know i got a phone call and then i just sat and thought and thought and thought and then a few hours after that i saw it on the internet and then i was like now it's real well the first reaction i had when i see stuff like that is because of the internet and because anybody can start anything they want it seems you hope it's not real you hope you get in that call where it's like somebody somebody screwing around this is this is not real this is a rumor that you're going to get a text from vinnie saying you know hey man i'm fine and then to find out balloons and comes out for more reliable sources that indeed it israel so shock is the only thing anyone could say nobody saw this coming of course nobody knows what happened but the bottom line is at fifty four it's just absolutely tragic and way too young and i know you at huge history with with him charlie if you can't talk about the very first time you met him very first time we it was the first time we ever were in texas and those guys were there and we played it at this club and i believe tara or the opening band and a mutual friend of ours who everybody knows now rita she kinda was the conduit to grouping together to become friendly and then like i said we've known those guys since like nineteen eighty five and just the two of them darlan vinny where after you met those two it was like you had a friend in texas like both of them and they just made the experience so much better like and you immediately bonded so throughout the years we just remained friends yeah it's that's the thing that's coming out from everybody is the is the warmth generosity the friendship the minute you met them you just you know the smile the drinking partying the fun that that both of those guys were and and how warm they were and at the end of the day charlie and i mean you're like this is well when we get together and caulk over the years inevitably we start talking about and gossiping about all the bands and the music that we love because we're at our core were still just fans and that is what i always think of within dime i mean anytime i'd run into even when vinnie i remember we had vinnie on that metal show and he found out that the other guests on the show were sticks he was like so excited it was even funny like it didn't matter if it was a metal band or rock band he was just like so still such a fan would go i'd see him at all the shows he just be out there in the crowd and at the bar having a drink shot you know watching whoever i mean he never those guys never lost the whole thing of being a fan no absolutely not and i've said this before said this earlier today that i always equated dime in vinnie as like alex and eddie from van halen i always thought terror was like van halen reborn they had qatar player who was a hero you know what i mean the drummer's fucking awesome but the thing about vinnie that i think not a lot of people know maybe they do but from a technical side of things you know vinnie made those pantelleria records sound like that he was the guy behind it all who was turning the knobs queuing shit so that is kick drum wasn't fighting with darryl's fucking chunky guitar he just he was a lot of the brains and the i said this to.

"You've got a few different covers and what what's interesting is your choices that you made because it's an eclectic mix of music as far as covers are concerned starting with the pink floyd tune what what was this beyond that being an alltime classic in classic rockland what was the idea behind tackling wish you were here what would you do in that one as i've always looked the song and i really thought we can put a modern twist on it was you know to add some bigger drummed two drums played throughout the whole thing concrete q different solas or or blind can do its own solar and then out a second chorus to it and you know a i said it from the press release there's no way we are going to capture um what they were feeling at at a time and and alamo chenal that song it so we took a different approach to it tried to tried to just make it a little more modern interest to our own thing to it and then we also felt with what's going on in the old right now this is a very appropriate time to release it and you know at the time solid about at their it and then you know of the vietnam war was ending i know is played a lot during that as i hear from my manager of people that were around during that time and i just feel like the world at a crazy place right now so it worked out the rest of the song the guy said well why do you get to pick a cover why don't we get hurt so everyone kind of picture on song zach zakho would tell shannon's runaway up we did the beach boys which little beach poisoned in god only knows we did a a mexican folks song call no ending othello and and we did a mr bungle songs so we just had fun with it and we just wanted to what we want to do you know every stand going to cover of hangar eighteen or cure of a stranger or you know like every metal song thinker we just wanted to have fun with things that we discover to our journey in this crazy musical world.

"You know i think they're human being and they have a long life to live and i think if they love music does not have every right little forward and you know knowing mike as well if i dare he all we have been in my opinion the leader of that day on the guy who gets things going the guy who gets the demos gallon the guy who is just you know obsesses over every detail of that dan it's going to be hard to lose chester eu easily with one of the best vocal far time from when i was growing up watching them live aegis was flawless for what he did and can be tough but famed time mike is such a hard worker and his so dedicated to that band and put so much time in that i can't to see him you know just being done with it and you know that's that's exactly right because i had heard an interview with their producer and this was before chester died in he said that although chester was the front man of the banned for for the most part that that mike was really especially in the studio and stuff really a big part of the reason why that ban sounded the way they did in an architect of what they did so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's going to try to find a way to continue it and again you you yourself can speak more than you know an incredibly close to home as you mentioned earlier having losing a band member in having that sort of tragedy hit and then sort of reassessing things when the dust settles and saying okay we're gonna continuing here's how we're we're going to do it for for you you ended up bringing in portnoy who was you know the wrath was a fan of and and did a nice sort attribute like that but i mean everybody has their different sort of process on how they deal with that.
