"I don't know whether he'll win this year. He has a lot of competition. I guess coal would be the main guy but it's not just coal. It's also blitz in Charlie Morton and Mike Minor and Shane Shane Bieber a bunch of guys who were in that neighborhood depending on. What were you look at her. What stats evaluate but I guess the Astros probably have the narrative of case right now and I don't know whether there's any vote splitting or whether votes putting is actually a real thing when players on the same team I guess minor and Lesnar Dr also but whether or not he wins another award. I think his place in history is pretty secure now. Do you think that anybody will get a first place. Vote besides coal verlinden. I wouldn't give one to them but it wouldn't surprise me. If if someone did yeah I think for much of the year sure I think Lance Lynn was I don't know if he was the leader in the clubhouse but he is being discussed as maybe not presumptive cy young winner but kind if <hes> a likely the leading candidate perhaps so. I just don't know whether someone's GonNa give it to a Texas ranger but I think those guys have have solid cases cases. I wouldn't be surprised if someone got a first place vote other than those two okay all right. Yeah I think probably we could say some of the same things about Justice Andrew that we will say about Edward Diocese next time because the question is like have they been unlucky or her half. They've been deserving of the runs. They've allowed obviously with the s allowed two runs at a much higher rate than Justin verlander has but it sort of the the same statistical quandary with those guys where certain stats look more impressive than others but I guess we will get into that time all right just updating the passing port that we mentioned during the episode it won't be Assistant. GM Eddie Romero running baseball operations by himself it will be a group of Executives Romero Brian o'halloran Zach Zack Scott Raquel Ferrara. They'll be taking over in the meantime while the Red Sox conduct a search for a fulltime GM or president of baseball operations so obviously a lot of turnover for the red sox. I think that'll be four different people running their baseball operations department in the span of a decade despite their winning multiple world series during that time and despite all of those executives executives being pretty respected people not like the Steiner Bench Harrington or Dave Dombrowski is incompetent in some obvious way in Epstein of course had been there for quite some time in Charrington was really groomed as his successor so saying four within ten years. Maybe makes it sound bit more chaotic than it actually was but you'll get some teams that have had less success didn't also less turnover during that time it's somewhat striking and I wonder whether the next person hired will bring the red sox back toward the or analytics driven. Keep your prospects build from within model that so many other teams have adopted in that Charrington kind of champion during his time in Boston we were speaking in the episode about Steve Pearson how he's had kind of a jekyll and Hyde ride odd year even your career segments sort of true for the red sox going back to two thousand eleven. I just did a little math than I added up the differences in team win total from season to season in the took the absolute value of those differences and added them together to see which teams have had the most change from one year to the next in there and wooden totals between two thousand eleven two thousand nineteen so for example for the Red Sox won ninety games in two thousand eleven. They won sixty nine games in two thousand twelve. That's a difference points of twenty one games so I added up the differences. Each season did the same thing for all teams and the Red Sox are way on top of that list so their cumulative change has been one hundred forty four games going back to two thousand eleven. The next closest team on the list is the Orioles at one zero nine and it goes mariners ninety nine diamondbacks at ninety seven brewers brewers ninety four as at ninety two Rangers at ninety..

"Sitting in well vita blues, thrown his first pitch out and Salem Oregon tonight. Tiny man is up there. The giants extended spring. Now they have like a. Top or low, a ball Salem Oregon, and Tom trouble horns up there man genetic club for the giants you played for him. Tom tripplehorn? Sure did police form in? Aaa won a championship in Vancouver. And Dan, he ended up getting a job at Milwaukee, and spent about three and a half four seasons with him in Milwaukee, I want to get to your Milwaukee days. I did a little research on you a little bit of Mike, Mike, tiny Felder. Michael otas, Felder. I gotcha. I'm all come at you with some good stuff big band, but we're going to we're going to talk to guests I before I get into your career, just a couple of things drafted as a second baseman that kind of surprise me always thought you were an outfielder but she said, second base and shortstop and then you went to the outfield. I was more of a shortstop in a second baseman. Drafted as a second baseman third round in nineteen Eighty-one draft or the Milwaukee Brewers. And sure enough, nineteen Eighty-one you only played four years in the minor leagues. You came up in nineteen eighty five five years, five years wasn't eighty one eighty two eighty three four and eighty five. Okay. All right. I gotcha. All right. Eighty-five. You've played fifteen games in a big leaks September eleventh, nineteen eighty five you first game in a big leagues. Nine eleven remember that. Remember the whole game have remembered part of the game, the only in part of it. We, we, we, we wanted to work we wanted to triple eight championship tonight before we beat the Phoenix giants in Phoenix for the three Phoenix Firebirds back. They Knicks five bird was a fire bird. It was hot Phoenix. When you're playing there. We ended up sweeping them and the third game was in Phoenix. And so the next night in about four pitchers. Got called up the next day but I plan was late. So we got in late. So the game was already started by the time we landed and made I way to the ballpark. And, and then the first thing you had to do you had to stop in and go see to general manager because you had to find big. Contracting. So out of the five I was the last one, of course. They're beating the door by the time I made it down downstairs, did give them a uniform. Find out what my locker would and all that get dressed get down to the dugout. It was already in about the third four minute. So Milwaukee was planning Yankees, who is managing the Billy Martin. What's the Yankees manager Yankees with hot at the time they was on Milwaukee's manager? Oh, my God, George Bamberger head Bambi and Yankees seven game winning streak. And they had just called Toronto. That was the year. Toronto started the season. Eleven oh. And they was going wire-to-wire and, and New York have finally caught fire and had called them in. And so it was tied for first and it was it was a good game. Game was going back and forth. And it was tied up and all of a sudden, the bottom of the ninth in and he was like a Eddie Romero a utility infielder. Remember eddie? Been leading off and Bamberg. Paldon coach. Well, listen fail to kid up there. So I ended up pinch hitting leading off the ninth off the night. Then if Eddie Romero pitch on a mile rich forty wow. Rich Suren Richard a lot of good years, the as and. The Yankees like a two one pit lied. Dr bass. And. I hit first major league baseball baseball though, flying around. I basically tell me more, what ended up having scored the winning run did you? Yes. And then I ended up I was all juiced because I wanted to steal, they ended up walking in next guy. So we I and say, and they ended up button us that third and Cooper and segment. Third and one out and seasonal Kuban ended up hitting a line drive. Slicing down the left field line and Billy sample playing left and he running over to candy. And then even if I weighed me if I kissed his ball, there's no way I'm this guy out there, be let it drop, and it landed about three fifty three feet. Fair Billy, he came flying out of the Doug. I have a foul ball volleyball of three fear. And so I ended up going to win and run. And we love Billy Martin at home. Mattis hill kicking darnold umpire and what I was used to seeing Billy on TV now I'm feeding here by trying to give me half five I'm talking. Going off kicking dirt on a bar. I couldn't believe organ ball, that much fair, no replay back. Then tiny, no replay. That's great. Ios, you remember the first time you're gonna feel. It doesn't matter how old you get. And we always ask all the players, you know that we always ask them, where were you when he got called up and it doesn't matter how old you are. You remember that moment and it was it was a great fairly, but. It was a great feeling for me. But you couldn't celebrate a whole lot because I went up to a team that was in last place by thirty five games out of firstly and they gotta win. We got to win. And then you walk into the clubhouse and guide all he's got ready to, like, oh, how many games we have Levin ready to go home? Big. Hey. Hey and you're excited because that was your first game. I hit score. Run your we're like we're wherever I go. But that's what happens and it's difficult and people don't understand that. When you're in first and second when you're battling those winds everybody's excited, but you and your last place, it's only a win. What's, what are we doing tomorrow? It's sad because those things happen. And when you're teams are, you know, scuffling and the bottom of the barrel, the you're, you're trying to get a win. It doesn't matter how what I like about the giants what they're doing is they're not mailing in, in their thirty wins right now. Thirty eight losses. They're creeping. But they got a little flow going. Now they got they got some positives going. And that's what I liked about today's game. They battle the first place team you still you still want to compete the young players. The young players this plan. They have something to prove they trying to show that they belong up here for the veterans, you want to be good leaders, in showed a young guys at eight there's no Quinton. Emmy we still fight, and then and then the way I look at it too. How many we have thirty eight laws of thirty dollars? How many teams come in first place and at the end of the season, they only have thirty eight losses only have forty losses. You're going to end up with about sixty sixty five losses. So it ain't it ain't over it ain't over till sometimes. And, you know, there's sometimes when you're in first place you're coming in gone. We're playing giants. We should roll these three and next thing you know, you lost I two now tomorrow your balance to get a win before you go home. And, and that's a long flight to Milwaukee. If you drop three of the giants now on the other side giants trying to win one because they got to go to L A and B and play them for four straight there. And that's going to be a battle right off the bat, and it had getting giants a lot of companies by going in, if they can get this win tomorrow. "And we are here to day to talk about the museum of their national folk art and the events coming up. The Notre Dame worth does events and the post Noce event, and I am joined by coin Cordova. Hi, Corine and John Zarrella. Thanks for being here. You are both involved in this. The Notre Dame work does gala, and I'm going to be it'll be great to hear about everything that's going on. So we've Christine and I spoke about the event and it's happening two weeks from today. Saturday, November the third why don't you tell us a little bit about what's going to go on that evening green? Well, actually, this is my my first event here. Because I knew I just moved here from San Francisco. And so, but I wanted to I wanted to jump on this because I love I love the museum first of all, it's my heart. And I love this this day of celebration. So I joined the group as on decoration and auction, but John is actually last year was very involved. So maybe he should have great idea. But I definitely want. I interrupted you. I mean to you. But I wanted to make sure that we get to talk about your career making jewelry, and this beautiful necklace that is going to be auctioned at this gal. So John you were involved last year and tell us a little bit about yourself, and how you became involved in this holiday, and why you like go all out and are so excited about it. And well, I moved here in eighty three I used to be in a journeyman electrician in LA for eighteen years. And then. Eighty three all the art here. Started happening great time to be here and artistic talents. It were in me starting to get nurtured, right? I love. A vanity or whatever for skulls, and then the day of the dead and people that I went to Mexico like six times for the Martos. Where'd you go Walker several times? That's the big place for a right? Yeah. And the art it's over there, and the food, of course, we'll hawk on the Molay. It's incredible yum. So the art just really intrigued me, and I started to understand read more about day of the dead and the miracles. Pencil chance Spanish you need the scent of the miracles to bring down the spirits for that day. Right. And that's why thanks to. A generous donation from. John rochester. We're getting the real miracles. We make three hundred Lay's. Wow. When you come into the function, you'll get laid at the front with. Great. It is the house. My house is Corinne came in. She wanted to check out my house. The statues. I'm letting museum borrow there's like thirteen are treatable statue skeletons that he's lending the museum for the party. They are works of art, and amazing and they're human size. I mean, they're like little like real. Did. You get them from Mexico are there from. Yeah. From oliver. And so you that's sort of how you got involved in you own canyon road flowers thirty years. You know, when I was at the Georgia O'Keefe BCM every week. It was like who did these incredible flowers and then come to find out? I get to meet you. Really, really talented. So what do you all do to the inside of the museum? I mean, you do the marigolds fresh marigolds, but. Statues with borrow this is like thirty forty seven operas and put him on the walls, this friend, Eddie Romero, maids three-foot skulls out of poster board, and they're all different day of the dead. Not skulls. Not Halloween day of the dead. Right. Ain't it up and sugar skull. Right. And last year. We had thirty centerpieces with two sugar skulls bigger than. Tennis ball and two styrofoam skulls. So four skulls. Everything's just statues on the top. Are wonderful beautiful honorary chairperson alley McGraw. She said this was incredible. And I did a husband and wife to people are ten inches high for the center with all the flowers and all that. And so it's flowers and color and shower, just like everything that you could imagine day of the dead. Just like, so candy, all the decoration everything. And then this year, you all are gonna do and some centerpieces. I just wanna say that you're listening to coffee and culture right now, we are talking about the Notre Dame worked us gala at the museum of international folk art, I'm your host this week, Jennifer Viele, and I'm speaking with Korean quarterback and John Zarrella about the Noce gala and the decorations so this year. So you were talking about centerpieces last year. Tell us about centerpieces this share do you want to take that one? Well, we had the idea that because we wanna make money for the museum. This is this is raising. Money for the museum and education. So that's really important. And so we're looking at different ways to to increase that revenue. Right. And so one of them is going to be the skull. So we bought like a forty skulls just new paper machine, and we gave them to forty incredible artists. And each of them is designing the skull in sort of their way the way they do their art. So the skulls are going to be different. They're gonna be fabulous. And they're going to be for sale. You bid on them already the one that brought one just to have in front of us. Great. It's it's incredible. I wanna put a bid on it today. I want to take it home myself. This is Arthur Lopez that did this skull painted a sugar skull, and then put cactus all around it with a quad Lupe on the top. It's all the skulls are going to be fabulous. Each one will tell a story about day the dead and about the artists themselves. They're going to be the centerpiece, and John and I are going to put them on the center and then put beautiful flowers around each one. And then the people at the party will be able to bid on them and highest bidder wins are you making one as well. Well, you know, so late to start. Yes. I'm making is getting to be of course, jewelry. Well, we can talk about your because you're really successful jeweler your work is absolutely beautiful. We have an example of it here in the studio today, which is also going to be part of the Noce Gallup. Let's talk about who some of the artists are that are making your centerpieces. Well, the Michael Scott. And Alabama Scott, of course, him Susan cantankerous. What would it a Hollywood Jenny Cooley? Max leeman. Oh my gosh. Amac's has done a Jaguar. Yeah. He has done a Jaguar that if I don't get to bid if I don't get the win want that he. Also, both of us are fighting over the same skull. So this is going to be quite when you walk into the dining area. The first thing I want you to do is walk around and start picking your skulls and start signing up for them. Right. So each of the tables, then we'll be named for the artists who who who created career from a blank plain vanilla paper machine. They have three. Piece of great art work that will be available for auction. And there will also be a live auction and the silent auction rates. Great. So there's going to be so yeah, first thing to do is get your ticket. If you don't have one, and you can go to WWW museum foundation dot org slash Noce or call five five two one six one one nine nine to buy tickets for this event is happening in two weeks. November the third we're here. We're joined by John Rolla in crane Cordova in Europe. Both part of the are you both involved are you decorating Korea. I'm in decoration and auction ox. Yes. Great. So my outfit is being made as we speak. Ooh. You had a fabulous out. Did you win the costume contest? Last year. I won second place second player, and you looked hot. Thank you. That's good. That's great. I can't wait to see. What your quit tells gives us? A little hint about your costume since. I used to be electricity. There's always lights involved with me. Oh, that's so cool. Batteries wait near here. Sleeves will be on fire and same with my tails, you my top hat and my eyelashes. Oh, wow. Electric lights on them. Wow. That sounds great. I mean, this is really a place if you wanna see day of the dead, costumes and people going all out decorations and everything really that has to do with this holiday of celebrating the, you know, the transition to the next life and death. This is really a place where you could do it and in doing so you are supporting the education and exhibition programs at the museum of international folk art too. So we'll be right back to talk about the Notre Dame.

"Sports leader. Are six eighty. NBR's six eight. Keno Sarah's joins us of the athletic. You know, how are you? I'm good. Thanks. Glad have Yana I've been pumping. Yup. All week. You wrote a couple of very good articles that really should have got my attention. So I thought it'd be nice to have you on and talk to the audience about it. First of all he did something yesterday about trying to predict which teams would do well this weekend in which teams. I think you could extended probably after the playoffs as well. And it was based on strikeout percentage and walk percentage. Explain that to everybody. I just was looking for one simple thing that could be predict. And I know that on a player level when you're looking at pictures, for example, one of the most the most important number. You can look at. It's a good way to think of the game. Really? I mean. The game really coming down to what happens at the plate. Increase the strike out. Pitcher. And the one the interesting thing is that keeps showing the dodgers as being very good. Just had a terrible year when it comes to clutch. You know, other things. Able to put together, but they've been. Serious with us. The other piece you wrote this week was was kind of a look into what the giants made new as far as this front office position goes any general manager baseball operations guy. Larry Baer says he wants to go with somebody with a statistics background. Maybe somebody involved in the analytic side of the thing with Jason MacLeod's name. That's come up. Dan can't Trowbridge ever with the as can you? Tell us what kind of guys we should be looking for these names just aren't mainstream names, usually. Yeah. Problems is that even if Bryan cave ins gonna be just an adviser. Title of being. Vice president senior vice president of baseball operations and often one of the ways that you get the ones to come over who's already a general manager is to give them that title. It'd be like we're gonna make you vice president. Operations. And so there are a bunch of names on the level. That would be super interesting. In Tampa Bay is. Vice president of operations over there. But maybe interested in how the resources of the giant disposal. All very very analytic forward. And they've been doing a lot of interesting things there that. The giant. Guys that you might have heard from before. Filthy. Back in the day. And Mark supplier built a. The Cleveland Indians. You might wanna bring in as vice president of baseball operations already has that title. You know, I got together a group of lower guys. That you could bring on as. GM, and those are very interesting names to be giving away because they won't have already either been the media or handle a whole team. Like like time bloom has when they say like the analytic side of things, and you've had your finger on the pulse of this all season long, kind of giving us a look at you know, spin rates and and fly ball rates in important stuff. I mean, really just what you're talking about with. What makes a good pitcher and and how to quantify which team might be good in the postseason. What type of analytics are our teams looking at like, what is something that one of these general managers, we'll have to we'll be tasked with focusing on what type of things will we see overhaul in the the roster construction of these teams. Well. One thing. That's interesting is every team. Every team know the importance of pitch velocity. But there are things about. Which is making the most albums existing right? There are ways to take deters that have current ditches that could be made better grew through technology. So maybe somebody could come in and through. You know? Just by saying if you change the scripture this grab. Are you taking? There. There are definitely player development things. They could come in do right away where they say, you know, you're launch angle. But our players better. We've had a hard time developing position players for a little bit. And then the other thing that they can do is improved economic thing. They really need to improve their scouting or process in Latin America. Produce the same sort of talent that other teams. That's why put a guy like Eddie Romero on the list building the Red Sox. And did a great job over there. With us on the athletic, and you could tell he's on this this subject really well. You know, the Red Sox have them brass key, Mark Shapiro. You think the giants are bringing someone like that? And then the someone off your list to be the general manager, even though it probably would be sort of a horizontal move as opposed to vertical for some of these people. How could that breakdown like that? Because this is the San Francisco Giants, and they have that such a traditional approach kind of like the Yankees in a way. Have you think the top man OB chosen? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I that's why I do. Around the guy like. Tampa Bay because he you know, he would be instant title, maybe a lateral move. But in terms of resources giant Dopp is considered around the league as a kind of jewel job. Being the Yankees who the dodgers? And so. Looking at trying to take somebody from a smaller market team turnoff. In cleveland..

"Predictive. And I know that on a player level when you're looking at pitcher, for example, one of the most important number. You can look at other than maybe a wasp it strikeouts. Minus lock and it's just a good way to think of the game. Really the game really comes down to what happens at the plate. You can limit the walk and increase the strikeout you're going to get good pitcher. So I just looked at land. And the one the interesting thing that keeps showing the dodgers as being record. And I just had a terrible year when it comes to clutch. You know, other things that they haven't been able to put together, but they've been goodbye. Sarah with us the other piece, you wrote this week was was kind of a look into what the giants may do as far as this front office position goes the general manager baseball operations guy. It helped build the built the direct thought back in the day. And mark. the Cleveland Indian those are the top level executives. You might wanna bring in at the vice president of baseball operations. It already has that title. You know, I got together a group of lower guy. GM bring on as a GM, and those are very interesting, and you're going to be giving away because they won't have already either been trying to media or handle a whole team.
