'Coming 2 America' Goes Heavy On Nostalgia
"Too heavily on nostalgia. Unless you're a huge fan of Eddie Murphy's classic 1988 film coming to America, and lots of people are there's not going to be a lot for you, and it's less than inspired sequel Coming to America. We celebrated her 30 years absolute and prosperity. 30 Years of service. Well, great nation on 30 Years off Delicious fast food. The new film begins with Murphy's Prince Akeem Joe Fair, opening a fast food restaurant called McDowell's in the African Country of Amanda Devote ease of the first movie. No. This chain is owned by Akin's American father in law, played by John Amos, who denies his business is in any way a rip off of another well known burger joint. They've got egg mcmuffins way that a mixed up in this way are also celebrating my new beyond big mix burger, So there's no meat. There's no meat. Maybe we're getting much better with Pepsi Call Max here are subtle as a sledgehammer. This scene mostly gives us an excuse to see Amos and Louie Anderson, who also appeared in the first film, The Story of the original movie was a black centered fairytale. Murphy's a keen came to America, Queens, New York, of course, tow avoid an arranged marriage and find true love in the new movie. After the death of his father, King Akeem discovered he fathered a son unknowingly in America. Teams return to Queens brings one of the Sequels funniest moments when he revisits a local barber shop where movie magic allows Murphy and costar Arsenio Hall to play multiple parts. Just like in the first film can't be both famine and blood. Damn, Nelson Mandela and Winnie just discovered that I may have a bastard son here in this land conceived during my last visit. How much data supports you getting from the King pays no child support. No time for 30 years and you came back. You're the damn it. Comic Jermaine Fowler plays the sun. Lovell Johnson, who brings King a came home to meet his mother marry played by Saturday night Live alum Leslie Jones. My African I told you he was gonna come back. So you know this man. I definitely know this man. I know this man all the way live much as I love Leslie Jones, she and levels. Other American relatives, including Tracy Morgan, as his uncle Come off is uncomfortable stereotypes as King Akeem introduces his son to the moonda and pressures him into an arranged marriage. Comedy gets clunkier and more predictable, like a Mel Brooks style parody of the Black Panther of The Lion King and the first coming to America. Ultimately, this coming to America is mostly an excuse to bask in the glow of characters who's shown so much brighter and distinctively. 33 years ago. I'm Eric Deggans. The Eddie Murphy Hall of Fame
"Are joined by van leith in the cost of higher learning and eddie murphy expert to break down the career. One of the greats. What what i what. I what i was going on with guys hanging in there excited to talk about eddie. We're gonna do a hall of fame here so for the folks out there who have never heard hall of fame episode very briefly. Break down what we do on these episodes. We have built halls of fame for tom. Hanks roger deakins. Nancy meyers toshiro buffoon. A monster movies and most recently george clooney. So it's time for eddie. What we doing we build. A hall is ten films from a career. No more no less. He's got forty movies so we got a lot to talk about here. I'm going to start with this. Amanda eddie murphy. What do you think. I think of multiple eddie. Murphy's i think of a lot of characters all in one movie. This is going to be interesting van. I'm really excited to talk to you about all of these because i've been listening to unsurprisingly. There are a lot of rewatch ables movies. Eddie murphy movies on rewatch bulls and i was listening to some of them in. You're on several of them. And you know i had that podcast thing where you want to respond to the person but you know it's a podcast so now you're here and it's a privilege to get to talk to you but for me eddie murphy is a little bit of. It's a generational cork for me. Because i am just. I think a little bit more than both of you and so i became kind of like movie aware movie sentient like mid nineties. Nine hundred ninety five nine hundred ninety six. And i've done a lot of catch up but if you become aware of movies in the mid nineties that means that the first eddie murphy. You get the nutty professor and then milan. And then shrek. I saw shrek in theaters. Not above it. So you know at that point. He's like the elder statesmen of comedy super established. Like i knew the beverly hills cop steam song and dance to it while before i saw it but kind of understanding him as like family eddie murphy and then catching up on everything else. Interesting chronological or not chronological murphy. Experience for me. Then you want to do your history with eddie. I know you are been living with him for a long time. Yes i have been So i hambur what year this was and i don't wanna insult my parents. Every time i mentioned my parents. I get some minor detail wrong and then i have to hear about it into along to our phone call. Your parents listen airpods today. Let's no your show's. I wish they wouldn't but that's nice. Yeah i wish they would but they My father was taking me to see a movie. We were all going to the movies but this time we were breaking it off like my father was taking me to see one of the superman movies. It's either three or four and my sister. My grandmother my mother went to see beverly hills cop two and this was my first experience with with with seeing people so jazz to see a movie because they went this way. Like we went to the superman franchise. I fell off by that point so we went this way and they go this way when they go this way. They're all of these people over there. And i'm like daddy i wanna go over here and he's i know that's too old for you. We're gonna go watch superman. And i say that because that's the moment that i actually became movie sentient by. That's the start of it. That's like what are these people into. Before that i can't tell you when i i kind of became aware of eddie murphy. Because he's like michael jackson in the sense that there was never a time. I wasn't aware of him. I was born in nineteen eighty so by the time. I start getting Information downloaded into me eddie. Murphy's a part of that he's like a part of that thing but the first time. I realized that this guy isn't just a do that. I see on tv or the guy that that he is. The biggest thing in the world is what i saw. People excited to go for it felt. So that's my that's my memory of him and it's not even necessarily what you might call one of his mega classics like beverly hills. Cop two was the event that you can remember that says a lot. And that's eighty seven net says a lot about where we were with. Eddie he was kind of in the middle of i. There are very few movie star runs in the history of movies like the one he had in the eighties. The rise to fame which starts on. Tv i guess tom hanks Robin williams maybe In terms of just successful movies maybe will in there but those movies weren't weren't quite the same as well. what is there were talking about. It's really remarkable when you think about it. There's no like they're not like high concepts with willa was like he needed to be punching an alien in the face to get to this level and like eddie movies are just like it's especially in the eighty s. Eddie is just running around doing stuff. That's that is what this movie is. He's he's being harassed whether he's a cop or he's a convict fresh outta jail or if he's a guy off the street who gets taken into financial institution like it's just it's entirely built around his persona and his sense of humor which is is unusual. We don't see that very much. These

Hilaria and Alec Baldwin welcome sixth child
"Eddie Murphy's has got 10 kids s O. The Baldwins now just had their sixth child. So they still have a ways to go to catch up with Eddie Murphy, but Hilaria Baldwin and Alec Baldwin have their sixth child. Everybody's doing fine with that. The guess the the interesting part of this is that she just had a baby like seven months ago. S o. You know, they're cranking them out like crazy in that Baldwin family
The Lucas Bros, Using Humor 'To Shake Folk Woke'
"Kenny and Keith Lucas are stand up comedians and identical twins. People don't have to react when I see twins. No. Okay, they go crazy like we were in the supermarket looking for some Jell O. Yeah. And we're just about to pick it out. And then some dude came out of nowhere. It was like, you know, you guys have a stick of Doublemint gum. That's from their 2017. Netflix special Lucas brothers were having a moment right now they're writing and starring in a remake of Revenge of the Nerds, But they also wrote the story for the new movie Judas and the Black Messiah. The film premieres today in theaters and on HBO. Max NPR's Elizabeth Blair has this profile. The Lucas brothers are best known for a kind of stoner humor. And here's a rule of thumb You should never do. Shrooms wouldn't do Who looks like you, man. I'm telling you. But underneath the jokes, there's a serious side that draws heavily on their childhood in the housing projects of Newark, New Jersey, called the Garden spires is you always, you know, broken elevators infested with rats and rotten Drug dealing violence everywhere, But you know, there's a community that is people that there's families is my family When they were six years old there, Dad went to prison. My father actually is out of prison. He's not in prison anymore, and it sucks that he's out. I wish he was still there. Oh, yeah. I wanted to go back because all he wants to do is father's sight. Don't like do we pay rent? Now it's over. The Lucas Brothers connection to Newark got the attention of New Jersey Senator Cory Booker in 1999, then a Newark City councilman, Booker went on a hunger strike in front of the Garden spires. He also served as the city's mayor. Here's Booker talking to the Lucas brothers on his instagram. I love your insightful, hard hitting humor and the sort of the Eddie Murphy and S O. My great heroes Coming up, you know, were uncompromising how they used humor to shake folks woke like book arm. Keith and Kenny Lucas went to law school and why you and Duke, But unlike Booker, they dropped out. It was weird Tonto Study law and and kind of be poor and black because it's like, Oh, I see what The consequences of policy and law are like on a daily basis, and especially when it in relation to African Americans and the notion of criminality and how it's projected onto blacks and I see that process. I found myself sort of disengaged very early. I always said, you know what I want to do something that has a direct impact on people. From an emotional standpoint, Judas and the Black Messiah is very emotional. Lucas brothers were in college when they first learned about Fred Hampton, the charismatic leader of the Illinois Black Panther Party in the 19 sixties in the movie he's played by Daniel Cholula, Mother Liberating You can't Murder Liberation is another revolutionary, but you can't murder a revolution for murder Freedom fighter, but you get amount of freedom. He's the Black Messiah. Judas is William O'Neal, an African American who was arrested for interstate car theft and Impersonating a federal officer in the movie. We see how the FBI recruited O'Neill to avoid jail time and earn some money. He was instructed to infiltrate the Black Panther Party. And provide the FBI with information about Hampton O'Neill is played by like Keith Stanfield Target You Like some good information, some nobody else No. Is it some kind of bonuses? I'm I'm counting on it. Bill O'Neill became so much of a Panther insider. He was put in charge of security. He provided the FBI with a floor plan of Hampton's apartment in 1969. The Chicago police raided the apartment and killed two Black Panther leaders, including Hampton for the Lucas Brothers. It was essential to tell the story of how the FBI recruited informants in the black community. I think it's important to see just how insidious The system has been in turning young African Americans against one another. Now they Essentially used poor black people against poor black people to execute their goals of minimizing the threat of black messiah is like we just felt it was important to see both sides of the coin. Whether it's a historical drama or its stand up comedy for the Lucas Brothers. It all comes from the same source in a big thing about our act is that we we always try to ground it and stuff that we've gone through, and it's always been Important for us to talk about these systemic issues and a variety of ways. Now they're writing and will star in Seth McFarland reimagining of 1980 four's Revenge of the Nerds Practice a bunch after school. They called US nerds. So one cool. The Lucas brothers promise that their movie will be almost nothing like the original because times have changed. It's like the juxtaposition of being a bully and a nerd is so different from what it was like in the eighties, where you had this one, a stark dichotomy between what it was bullying what it was to be a nerd. Now that's been fused together, and I think That's why the time is right to make a story about that. The Lucas brothers say it's hard to watch the original revenge of the nerds. Even though the movie was a childhood staple. They're excited to give it an update and to make it personal. Elizabeth Blair. NPR news

"Basie from 1965, a show called Hollywood Palace on ABC just happened to find that and I'll tell you what that is as good as it gets and Mr Sinatra's vocal performance during that. That show was spectacular, and that's why I wanted to put it on the airwaves here. Hey, it's Joe Piscopo and Ramsey Mazda's Sundays with Sinatra right here on legendary 77 W. ABC. Proud to be with you and interesting I like on prefer Frank Sinatra's voice. When it was older. I think it was introduced to him when I started doing the impression on Saturday night Live where you could hear the wisdom and the wisdom and the experience And that and that epic history that Sinatra history, you know, in his voice. I like it when when he was doing two shows a night in Vegas, and you could hear it in his voice, you know, but there On live television. You know, for the millions of people the clarity of his voice was second to none. Francis Albert So not just selling accelerating everything about banks, and I'm so excited, Bobby. Right? Girls on the show. I'm Bobby right now is one of the most talented cats in the world. He's out there, working all the time. I called him. I said, Bobby, you want to come on the show? He has some great Frank Sinatra stories. Don't forget. He's a kid when he first met Frank Sinatra and Frank Sinatra always appreciated the talents of Bobby Rydell. And then the Carol alters a longtime friend. She's my buddy, you know. And she told me that the cutest freighter that just I just called her dad being Richard going over the show. I said, Cal, you gotta call it tell the story. She was actually had dinner at Frank Sinatra's house in Beverly Hills. I leave it at that. I'll tease that all right, And now you could or you could call in if you want 808 For a W A B C 808 48 w A B C. It's 9222. 8489222 800 here. Every Toronto volleys is running the board. Bruce is running the phones as Jennifer running the phone so good. We want a nice surprise. Jennifer. What are you cold with your jacket on? Just got the jacket on there. Now we're all like freezing. It's a A okay, well, we appreciate it. I'll tell you what it's a cold. You know, Windy night. It's a little snowing a little rainy, but we want to swing you through Sunday nights in the best of ways with the listening to Frank Sinatra. I have to tell you this too, before I introduce this next song, if I may Let go live from New York, by the way. So you know, back in the day I remember I was in a little town called Alpine, New Jersey, which is as Northwest is you can go in the great state of New Jersey. I lived there for a while, and I remember Remember Eddie Murphy was living in Long Island and then I convinced Eddie when he ran into some situations in Long Island, he said. That's far in this and that I should come to Alpine man. Eddie Murphy moved to help buy New Jersey. So it's be it's Piscopo did he went out, But it was so while because he had all these, you know these these cars like the Excalibur and a Rolls Royce going down the street. I was driving my Jeep Wagoneer, you know? And it was just so much fun, and it was some now. Now I send my son Joey, my beautiful son, Joey, who was just a baby. Then I send the Alpine school system. I find out who's in the school system. Stevie Wonder's kids. Go. Whoa! Stevie Wonder's in town to this was a little now It's like real. She she? I think Britney Spears is in there. Everybody's up in Alpine, New Jersey, you know. And I, we I moved that one. After Westerners. You got too expensive for me, but sure. I went out the West jersey you know? So so now I got to go to home school home and school night. Listen this and and I go there and I'm a father, you know, and And I'm just being at the the parent teacher. Night and there, Stevie, Stevie went now I knew Stevie Edina. You Stevie? Of course from when he was on Saturday Night Live and he never minded. You know, Stevie and I doing out you are black and I am white. You are blind as a bat that I have sight he'd ever by the great guy and I could remember going to Stevie's house and going over and we would just hang out playing pool and just having fun. Yeah, he did absolutely everything. It was such a nice guy. So cut toe all all those years later, my son Michael, my other son, Michael's 18 years old plays a guitar like Steve by the grace of God like Stevie Ray Vaughan. You know, he plays like Jimi Hendrix. He hears it. He really picked it up. And Phillips ace and the admires album, Eola and all these great guitarists, right, But then he says to me just the other week e a couple weeks ago. Hey, Dad, you know who's the greatest musician in the world? I go? The whole goes Stevie wonder this my 18 year old. I know what Well, How did you pick that? It's like I told them what I just told you about it because you knew Stevie Wonder said. We hung out. We did the sketches and He hit me and Eddie and we used to hang out a little bit, Joe. We went to school with the kids. So I'm telling you for my young 18 year old son who really knows more like a blues rock guitar to understand the genius of Stevie Wonder. It tells you how great a Stevie wonder really is. And what a beautiful person he really is. And you know what? Nobody knew that better. Than Francis Albert Sinatra. As you can hear, Hear from the main event in 1974 and my favorite thing about this song as he pays homage, Frank Sinatra pays homage to Stevie Wonder is the way the old man and when I told him this I told him was that that fires rose..

"Today. Thank you. My friend are always gonna be here. So it's a perfect way to start a vacation. Where you going? Seattle. Oh, that's right. You mentioned that earlier. You're going to get that picture of chance, right? That's the challenge we set up. You have to go to the area that was Chazz and send us like a picture of you giving a thumbs up. Okay, we will see. Well, I'll be there for five days, so we should be able to make that happen Between my trip from Starbucks in the dispensary. I'll be sure to stop by cats on the way. Please do, uh, the music you hear in the background. Bt docile tones of one Eddie Murphy party all the time peaked at number two on the billboard Hot 100 on this date Back in 1985 Abdul I was only 15 years old at the time. Actually member Eddie Murphy and Rick James and the music video, just doing the running the board and doing the whole nine yards. And, like great teams, like smacking some woman or something that exact same time Rick James things doing Rick James type things the level of fame that Eddie Murphy had in the eighties. Can you compare that to anybody right now? Like 1985, Eddie Murphy? You know you've got delirious. You've got raw all these hit movies. Party all the time. Whether you think it's a good song or not. Did Peak it Number two on the Billboard Billboard charts. Can you compare anybody to the Fame level? Eddie Murphy had circa 1985. I would say yes. I want to say who was has just died playing Black Panther Chadwick Boseman Chadwick Boseman. I would say him when he was still alive to that degree because he was just you know, I'm just movie after movie. After movie Whether was the Avengers whether it was move up there, Good marshal. Let's say he was even also when you Jackie Robinson's 42. So that's I would say Chadwick Boseman would be would be the closest without, of course, Rick James and the hitting people, Right, right. But Chadwick Boseman didn't have the television career because Eddie Murphy had SNL in his back pocket at that point, as well. Didn't have the music career party all the time was a big hit, had a couple others singles that came out afterward. Let's put your mouth on me, I believe was another release from that album. But for those who don't know 1985 like foul mouth, Phil Floren flown Phil, Eddie Murphy Man that level of fame. That's up there with one of the all time greats, of course, would have thought that Bill Cosby would be in jail. Eddie Murphy, Wooden man. Life comes at you fast, cause you look at that relationship that snoop Dog has with Martha Stewart. They're good buddies. Some have said they're more than buddies don't know. Try to think about that. But if you look at those two and say one of these two has been to federal prison, which one do you think it would be The Martha Stewart? Martha Stewart, right? Snoop got off on his murder charge. Mera murder was the case He got off Martha Stewart did insider trading and served our time And I would argue wasn't really insider trading, but It is what it is. Of course you would argue that, um Denzel Washington 66 years old today. Got a favorite Denzel movie? Um yes. The Pelican Brief Pelican. Brief sama. Julie Roberts about the judges. Oh, yeah. Real good movie. Remember the Titans? Always gonna be one of my all time favorites. Coach Boone Love that roll. It was on this date back in 1981. Pat Sajak became the host of Wheel of fortune. Now we've kind of had this debates on our program who goes down? As the goat the greatest of all time in terms of game show hosts because we lost Alex Trebek this past year, So you've got Alex Trebek. You've got Bob Barker. You've got Pat Sajak. Bob Eubanks name goes in the mix. I mean, there's a lot of other proposes Richard Dawson, who goes down as the goat the greatest of all time, I would say Bob Barker. That's what I said, because nobody stayed home from school with the intention of just watching jeopardy. Exactly. Prices right became an institution for all of those who were legitimately sick or just played hookey and stayed at your mom's or Grandma's house and went about $1, right. Exactly the phrases from that show come on down and A bump on a bomb that losing sound effect have become part of pop culture because of that show Now we'll say this about jeopardy. We're gonna lived in Europe for a while. Those Army brat jeopardy would come on twice a day to be the live version. Like 11 o'clock at night. And then, like the tape version three o'clock in the afternoon, so in college, I'd watch jeopardy and three in the afternoon. I get all the questions, right. What? What is this? Siberian eagle? How the hell do you know that? No guys, I'm just really smart that I study study a lot, actually. Now my friends like, Hey, you bastard. You watching tonight? Um, one of my favorite things about these game shows that was every once in a while. You'll get a contestant. That's just an absolute moron. And we see this with every show whether it's jeopardy, whether it's you know, Press your luck. Well, a fortune. They've had some real dumb people on this program. My favorite moment was when the category was a living thing. I want to remember that. A living thing. It's a living thing. Very million down Popsicle back..

"But we started every episode was the drive of the week what a drive is a line from a movie or TV shows with exceptional velocity and volume, and this segment belongs to Jimmy Klein. Alright. Lis fucking titties. Here. Mr Klein to. A film that hardly anyone is seen and you just have to check it out just on Blu Ray. It was just reviewed on trash men media. It is a film called cruel jaws the in some countries that was known as jaws five. It is an awful Italian rip off of jaws film actually using footage of Jaaz one, two and three. However, this film is actually better than jaws the revenge I still say check it out but it is absolutely hilarious and. "Academy has long relied on the film industry to make diversity central to its process and has long been embarrassed at the results. Hashtags Oscar's so White and Oscar's so mayl have greeted recent telecasts. But it's hardly a new problem. Back in 1988 Eddie Murphy took a moment while announcing the best picture nominees to say he almost didn't agree to do it because in 60 years, the Oscars had only three times honored black performers. Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier and Lou Gossett Jr now

How Sasha Merci and Dee Nasty Found Their Comedic Calling
"So. Do you to know each other? Okay, so my family and her family were friends way before we were even born, so we were always see to their at family gatherings when we were younger, and then we started getting very close in our teenage years. And that's when we find that. We were identical. Identical yes Indian. D- what was Sasha like as a kid? Sasha was very artistic like I remember when I would see Sasha's especially, because when we were kids, we kind of hated hearing about each other, because our parents were kind of against each other like my mother would always be like Oh. You Know Sasha is doing a plane school in her middle school and high school. And I, and then her aunt, who was had would be like. Oh, well, you know D- Get straight as all the time so. Tired of hearing each other about each other all the time I don't even want to hear, but what we started becoming a little older, and we were forming our own opinions about one another I just remember her being so bad cystic always drawing, always thinking always creating. So loving energy always the first thing you would see when you see especially when she was younger well still. You know as a first impression is. She would always argue she has always like loving, so that was how I remember her as a kid. Sasha! What was do you like? D. was very smart like I. Just knew if you WanNa, know something is I d, Goretti, she. She knew facts all the time, so my aunt was telling me that she has straight as I was very impressed by how young she was, and how she was how she was able to articulate herself and I'm like man animal. He'd been an artsy fartsy and I can't even express myself like she. She can, but. One of the things that I do definitely remember as has a huge heart, and she's just willing to help anybody she she's. She's willing to save everybody and that's one thing I admire about her. She's amazing. Do when you were kids. Did you think that comedy was in the cards for you? I knew that it was going to be in the cards. In some shape or form at come from a very funny family, everyone's always roasting each other. And then my older brother also was very into comedy, and there was one TV how I would have to, but he was watching because there was another option, and he at a very early age I knew about Richard Pryor Eddie Murphy. So I knew that I wanted to do it because. It was something that will show my humor, and also my phone very strongly about something where I wanted to just talk about some recently learned the vile that can be a sluice fast, but if you make it into humor, if you make it funny that everybody wants to listen to it. And Sasha for you know. I didn't think comedy Liz. Ever going to be something that I was going to pursue because I wanted to be a singer. I wants to be the next Whitney. Houston and I didn't like her, but I wanted to make songs and. Just, people were always tell me like you're funny like you're you have a for a funny personality or you not to make jokes, and that also stems from my family, because we don't know how to be serious and if anything. That's. Dramatic happens in the family. We always tend to figure out what's funny, but they also put me onto Dave Chapelle Eddie Murphy and all these. Great giants that I look up to these these days you know.

A hit television show a huge following on social media. Because of the way you were raised. I won't say special about you. Because I believe we all have the same human abilities possibilities. Not Everybody can do the same thing, but there has to be something. That is different because there are lots of people who try and there are lots of people who want it, and there are lots of people who have the desire. What was the difference? Do you think for you to difference to me? was I paid attention to what people did before me whether it was right or wrong? Everybody's successful as a for now. You laid a blueprint You know I can go down and Lis- from. To actors entrepreneurs to self-made Mogul Jay. Z, look at Tyler Perry. You look at Puff I mean. My Mentors Eddie Murphy Chris, Rock, prior. We're all on the wall to wall all so you surround yourself a surround myself with a constant reminder of whose great. Constantly come down steps every day. I look Richard Bill. He's great. He was great. I see Chris Rock. He was great I it's a constant reminder. What am I trying to achieve I want to be great, so that motivates me, so things separates me is my draw my driver's other people's success. It's so interesting because you get compared a lot to Eddie Murphy because not since Eddie Murphy has anybody. You recently brought Roka's record at the Nokia, theatre. In Two thousand eleven during his laugh at my pain tour Kevin's. Ince's. At L. A.'s Nokia theatre were record breaking with over one point. One million dollars in ticket sales Kevin Surpassed Eddie Murphy's record. I don't care what I achieved and is there I? Don't care what financial number they put aside any accomplishment. That I how many tickets you saw how many people feel can't. You can't outdo with Eddie Murphy did I'm I'm sitting here so solid? I believe back. I can't I can't do that

"I'm looking at the hypocrisy among black celebrities. They can choose to pick on bill cosby but they won't say anything. Out of their mouths about Harvey Weinstein Harvey Weinstein is being allowed to pay this large large sum of money to his accusers and not having to admit guilt. Bill Cosby wasn't afforded the same opportunity. They put this Eighty eighty plus year old man in prison and Harvey Weinstein. A may be likely to. He may not serve any prison time. So why. Don't the Oprah Winfrey and Eddie Murphy and all these other celebrities say anything about Harvey Weinstein. I'll tell you why because they are afraid of the Jewish Backlash Lash if you began picking on a man who was pretty much responsible for opening doors for you in Hollywood. I doubt very seriously if you'll find any black celebrity not one black celebrity going against the Jewish Hollywood establishment because they are cowards. I even saw my brother the game because you know fifty cent came out against Oprah Winfrey Russell. Simmons is being being harassed. Now by Oprah Winfrey with this do documentary about his alleged sexual excavates with women who he said He. You had consensual sex with so oprah. Winfrey is now doing a documentary based off of that part of Russell Simmons Life and she did something on Michael Jackson's life. But why aren't you doing anything on Harvey Weinstein. You've taken pictures with him they you. We've seeing Oprah Winfrey and pictures with her kissing Harvey Weinstein just making all over him. And why isn't she exposing her friend. You I know why again it goes back to the Jewish lobby. You're you're not going to go against the the Hollywood Jewish establishment because they pay your bills. They open open doors for you and they can shit you out of the industry so it's easy pickings to talk about Bill Cosby Amanda. Don't control nothing. He he can't stop you from being in a movie. Can't stop you from having a television special. He can't stop any distribution of your material but the juice can and Harvey Weinstein Women One of the most powerful men in Hollywood. He can stop it. You know that twenty five million dollars that He's GONNA pay out to his accuses uses. He's not paying. A dime company is banned at so my question is what is going on. Maybe another stand up on Netflix next year right which is crazy. I don't know why he's doing like this. If the tour he might film it to one of the times like all the others. Do I have to see Eddie like dog. That's such that's like an icon like we saw Gabriel Iglesias what last week last weekend yeah and that was that was great. I can't really say I liked him or Kevin Hart better because they have their own style but but man that was really funny I would hope the same thing where we go see Eddie like he's great at what he does and I'm just expecting hyphen today about laughing laughing here just want to share that because I I really think that this is going to be a big moment commit and we'll see when time progresses when he first puts out this Netflix movie goes on SNL kills it with. We are living together and he contacted me a few days ago and I told him to take a hike. Was I wrong. I mean me no dog. It sounds like you dodged a bullet yeah. You're you're fine like like what the hell like. I get it. I get it because it could. I always wonder oh how that works. When you have a fully vegan person of fully meeting person and they're not there's there's no middle ground and like yeah it's like. How do you do that and then like with kids when they come in the picture? I always wondered that but I know some people make it work like us. It's no but we really aren't that way for the clerk. Our meals was still both would e but take out the take out the meat part art because I think that's really it which me is still a substantial part of our diets for dinners and stuff though that's the thing out the me part. I feel like we'd be able to am I wrong. I mean if you go but you're more your more her lenient on that you would be willing to try something. That's not me I'm saying when there are two people that they are like. This is my diet period. That's when I could see how it kind of gets confusing and you're like if I'm trying to get to know someone. I'm all up for trying things. Six right people are getting leadership like you're supposed to learn from their brain. Usually people are like yeah that just shows me off the jump. You're not willing to learn like I'm like okay like show me. I'd be like okay. Do you have a favorite Vegan restaurant. You normally go to we can try. I never listen if this guy if his need to eat meat is more important than you girl you you you good you find this lattice joe like he just made it sound like. I I get it when we're not fully. Vegan all that stuff I it but I it doesn't make sense to me like I think I'm like. It's not that bad you can we. We've got like restaurants where they make like a Burrito there. Make whatever and it's like it's all like it's it's Vegan. It's all she's all like. We've had all these things and it's not good out. Say if you're a guy and you're like I can't go out. Let's go she's Vegan. They'll give it a try. It's not that bad unlike Dane talk about. You know talk about our standards like that's. That's an interesting standard. I know you can find people who eat meat but like Dang so that's more important than a potentially perfect match. You know what I'm saying annuity like Oh. I can't cook meals like dog. We're not we're not there yet. Let's try and see if you and I work well together and then that's when the actual part of the relation relationship comes were then you work on okay okay. How do we make stuff work because you're worth it. Isn't that Revlon. Oh it's one of them. Maybe Loria now one of those. I should know that's all. I got like yeah like it's you you touched. This guy sounds like he's a joke. If you'RE GONNA say up a working man and I need to eat meat like he don't need to man. He sounds like he got one of those big trucks the little son with the ball in from the bag of beauty teeny weeny. Oh my God so you dodged a bullet wilbur. Okay go shame and then just saying I'm going to punch Bob's on because women we can do now that we're exactly. That's we if we hit a correct me now that we could do anything now we are. That's all I got man. Where are we at. Oh not bad ed little over an hour. This like a normal episode and we're just gave a lot of topics we kind of went all over the place and there are people interrupting erupting us and yeah yeah so yeah we even though I don't like the wintertime dig witter because less people come around like I'm waiting. He sounds so social doesn't he is so sure let's be real now. I'm yeah I'm not the one four I go out early morning or late at night because I don't want to deal with people also turn. I can verify who yeah so. I got everything all that stuff as always trying to push some trying. I'm trying to get everyone starts. see what's happening. I feel like we've got a name like are the people that listen now the hecker rename. Oh No oh no the pagers though no thanks. I mean if you call on a page Inglis. Emerson's is called the pagers zing. I'm okay knocking down my ideas okay. We're going to wrap this one up let us know your thoughts anything we talked about. "On Colorado's morning news. Our next guest is an actor a comedian and a Saturday Night, Live alum well, known for his impressions like this. One of Eddie Murphy, getting an Oscar, you would I, I was sated. Why, why did it take so long question I should have been. Comedian Jay pharaoh is performing a comedy works downtown tonight through the weekend, and he joins us live in studio right now. What are you doing for beta? Thinking about Eddie Murphy. Grandma says clip all the time. I'm gertrude. Is that how it started for you? You, you had your heroes and you Saddam and a copy and emulate, my heroes, and you don't pretty good at doing well actually happen. You know, the impression thing happened when I was six, you know, oeiag o-of Aladdin. Now's my first impression because that's all watching Disney stuff. Right. And I had a at a girl, you good at it. And I was like work. Pursued is so you could get checks doing that. But then I had a drought. The comedy or the checks. That was that was a chick drought that a main what the hell Kuti's I don't have cooties. Okay. No cooties. All right. I never thought cooties existed is a myth. A don't exist kiss kiss kiss. Each of them if it's consensual, right? You got to put that into crazy. Now you have to do you think about some that you'd think about some of them news videos that they used to do back in the day? Michael Jackson can do the way you turn me on now. Get the heck out of here. No, he cannot you been Tammy. Feet. They'll slam had Michael nocona with the handcuffs. You can't call him. You can't do that. Mike now do any of that stuff anymore. Thank you. Appreciate that. No. Route talk on a hope. And he used to do you get there. We used to do the hump day. I guess he was, I guess the he was trying to get dead. Trying to impregnate the I don't know. Well, I come I come from the realm of two things can be true, probably good. We can't do that. But secondarily, does it make doing what you do comedy harder? Because you have to be I, I don't know if you have to feel like you need to be more PC with what you do. Listen man isn't. Put it at you ask this question. I feel like definitely in the climate that we we're in right now. There are certain things that you, definitely have to be weary of, but it's a ruling comedy as long as you're not talking about hurting somebody, you're not talking about not talking about causing harm this, same thing, and you have a smart take on a subject. And you make sure you attack it from both sides. Then you'll be fine which you have the fact that you have to delve that deep into it in this day and age now. That's scary. Right. It's cool because that's the political climate. We are in right? Yeah. People need to laugh more than ever. That's what I think do. Nobody was more sad that Barack Obama couldn't get three terms in office. My goodness. Love your impression of well, I appreciate it. Because, you know, I'm pretty much show now. Sorry up to I may may instead Kirk Rachel. Yeah. Basketball game. So I might barbecues, you know, getting Toronto might roscoe's chicken and waffles, you think your wife's going to run for president, Donald shift. She did not she'd win, but she should. You know, we, we've definitely conversed about. And I said, baby. You've got a head full of black hair. And if you do going, Oval Office, when you come out your storm from the X men. It happened to me. Went from jet black to Cisco. Cisco now. I'll do a rendition of one of the songs. Let me see that thong that about the bone. He goes Betty Buddha. Go bedouin Buddha. Goes that thong bunk. I did a cart. Will you didn't sit because his radio? Come on. Baby. The way. Maybe baby that all the Perry toughest dress will scandal is, is it the mannerisms of getting President Obama down, or is it the cadence invoice what was the hardest thing for you to master on, you working on the voice. Just because I used to do it differently. I used to I used to talk from my what I do is talk from knows when I did a Barack sound very nasal. But then I started on using my throat. Pause sounds we'd throat. Sorry when I started when added that to the impression, then it was like, oh, okay. Now it sounds like him. I just sound like Barack with the flu that wasn't good. We want to hear all your impressions, that we can't over the next three nights year at comedy downtown there where tonight through. Let's see Sunday. It looks like two shows a night, tickets, a Ford get on over there comedy, work dot com. For the ticket information. Ask your question voice was that you stay? I've got a couple, but they're not okay. This is like people around co workers. Yeah. Great great. So you as well, I think it was a couple years ago you were in here had to be have been back since the Jay, thank you. We appreciate it. Thank you for having me. Hope I didn't get you all fired. Okay. I kept it was right on the edge. If that's what ho boy. I'm glad that I didn't do my other some of song. PG thirteen. No. Cardi B. Right. Can't do that trail. Jay fair, ladies and gentlemen, eighteen here.

"Like, you're twenty five years old, and that's your life. So it's hard not to say SNL, but creatively, you're writing three minutes sketches or four minute sketches every week if you're lucky one of them gets on the air, and is like a middling success, so creatively, speaking parks and rec was probably the formative thing for me that where you know, when that show clicked on all cylinders. That's probably the most pride. I think I had taken anything. What do you remember from that Saturday Night Live reunion show when all of comedy is gathered there except Eddie Murphy didn't go to that. One. Didn't can you. Go did not know the Eddie Murphy didn't go because he was mad at David Spade because David Spade did a Hollywood minute joke in like nineteen ninety four or something where he's showed a picture of Eddie Murphy. And he said, oh, look shooting star or a falling star or something and Eddie Murphy, pretty rightfully say. Gotta side with Murphy on this one Spade. I'm Eddie Murphy. One hundred percent you decide with anymore via especially because literally the only reason the show is still on the air. Is that Murphy saved it and eighty eighty one after Lorne Michaels left. Eddie Murphy was the only cast member who mattered on that show for like two years while they were trying to figure out what the hell it was. And so it was a little bit like come on, man. The whole thing about us and allies. There's no sacred cows s and that was forged in the Watergate era, and the idea was and Lauren talks about this all the time whoever's in power, it doesn't matter who it is whoever's in power you take a cynical stance against them. You assume they're full of shit, and you attack them, and that means you play both sides if a democrat in office, you attack the democrat for Republicans enough as your tack the Republican, that's how the show retains its credibility. Is it doesn't seem like it's too skewed. And you know, when norm McDonald was doing update he was a vowed Republican and told people on air to vote for Bob Dole. It was really. And it felt weird. It was like not just because it's supposed to be counter cultural. But because the show. Just kind of didn't do that the show took the position that whoever's in power in any realm of society deserves scorn and derision and they deserve to be taken down. But on the other hand when it's one of your own when it's Eddie Murphy or something it's sorta like, well, what's the point of that? Like, why do that joke? Like, he's not the president. He's not a Senator. He's he's like why go after your own guy. And the only time I ever felt bad at that show. 'cause I produced we can update for three years. The only time they ever felt bad. Or when I felt like it wasn't a fair hit that we did a joke where it was like that person doesn't deserve that joke. That's the only time that show can really run a foul. And so yeah, spayed when after Eddie Murphy, and he was the only real notable no show, and I kind of on his side. And so, but what was that night? Like, what do you remember about your interactions and just what your career might become from that point? If you allowed yourself to dream while in that room. Well, there are two things that happened within a year. There was the. SNL twenty fifth, and then there was the NBC seventy fifth which they did a three hour live show in eight h in the SNL theater with like every old show every ER and saying elsewhere and get smart, and like, you know, the sid Caesar show like everyone from entertainment came back that was a nightmare. It's like I was one of the writers on the show. And so literally everyone from history from NBC histories of that show. It's really crazy..

Someone Eddie Murphy. It'll thought Fred broader, speak his death. So he could be a puppet. Well, Eddie Murphy used to live in the area so possible he was Mr. Robinson. All I ask of Eddie Murphy is just one more comedy special do one, oh like backers roots. Record it all the shit. I think he's he's be too scared to say some fucked up jokes these days, I don't know. Keep me scared. Yes. Be scared now, what's he doing? But this is why he hasn't done anything and so long. That's what I'm saying. The news. That's a good point. But he doesn't nothing to gain tarnish is fucking brilliant. The real fans would be like that's fucking classic Eddie if any came out like he did in raw delirious again. I talk about his dad and shit. I kinda would love that. But he's got a family. Now, he's a different person. He's working on Beverly Hills cop four parallelly and coming to. Oh, yeah. America's sequels happening. Also. Yes. Yes. Somebody to America anytime, actually, anytime either of those movies are on. Yeah. You watch them. I watch them. Yep. Vampire in Brooklyn. But like, I think I might go back to just for me. I might just go back to the eighties or to see the be my age now and to go to the comedy store, and like see those guys like prior, and Eddie Murphy and to see those guys I might. Do that or go see dinosaurs? Or go to like, see what Napoleon's really like, you know, what I mean just to see how bitch they were like kings, and queens, I might go back in time to see how bitch kings were. I mean kings were the biggest bitches. The for can still are. You know, what I mean to put the anybody who wore like a fucking fancy wig like powdered their face like or put on those fake beakers. What are you dressing, bro? I I wanna think Jared Leto is cool, but he's just like. I don't know. That's not cool to me. It's like his outfits would be like, here's the thing. Then. If Liam Niessen dressed like Jared Leto. I would think it was fucking bonkers cool or Bruce Willis if you dress like Jared, Leto bonkers, cool or. Who else? I don't know like skinny ass mother fuckers. It's tough for me to think they're cool is that fucking prejudice. Yet is. It's like. If you could put some weight on I guess is what I'm saying before your fucking cool. If I could like break you in half. Just be fit some sort of fit, and he probably fit. But like what are you doing wearing? I maybe I'm just jealous. I gotta wear shit like that. I gotta wear shit like that. I really do. I'm not famous enough though. That's the thing. I didn't think it super-duper famous to where I can wear like a fucking dodge neon like literally wear like parts of dodge neon and it's just all heavy and shit. Just clunking it all around at like some terrible fucking Hulu premiere that. I'm not even in. And he's just like, oh, you're comes Krista liaise wearing dodge parts of dodge neon. Wow. And his midsection. And cock is exposed very interesting. Okay. Very cool. What are you here for? I don't know. I just figured I wanted to just wanted to see it. Just wanted to see it even though Netflix already made a movie about this and Hulu is making it a week later. I'm still I'm at the premiere Jessica dodge neon and my Cox out. "Dot com to learn more. This Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy in Rick James, I will say the last part of the ridge as but but I been now I want to say that y'all know what I mean? So this was the top Rb song in one thousand nine hundred five already all the time when you want championship. Yes. Ma I yes. And we partied all the time. I bet it back. If you look at one of the videos, and you go back in the day UC urban Johnson, say potty all the time party all the time. Yeah. And that's what we did show. Time party all the time. This song is still a jam like I've actually been I mean, it was a long time ago now by like ten years ago, I was at a nightclub this song came on. And everybody was j kind of mashed it up a little bit more like modern, right, but people were getting down. Okay. To Eddie Murphy party all the time. So I look Eddie go sing again, man. I'm good. Very talented, brother. They're coming out coming to America to her. We had our city on to talk about. I got I got to see it too. Yeah. I got I gotta go down. Had a wannabe, right? He gave me the pastor impersonation. Arsenio was on the show and we talked Lakers with him. And it's funny. He said something that you said when we talked about magic. And he said exact I mean almost verbatim to what you said, you know, months ago when the whole Luke thing happened the first time, which was you know, there's two guys there. There's urban in the news. You know what I'm saying? A magic is the man with the million dollar smile at Irvine the killer in the boardrooms, and this is the businessman signal prisoners tightening. It was funny. But yes, so coming to America to our senior says he's not locked in. Yet hasn't signed the deal. Oh, come on and say boy, boy, notice good. You know, they just got a token. Exactly, we gotta get all that back. I mean, they first of all not to go win this velvet, it's beautiful beautiful. But the the fact they played them berries all those different characters that those guys played like ten carat. It was unbelievable was amazing. Now, you're going back to flip Wilson back in the day. We're playing all these different player characters. And in Eddie was was great at it. You know, obviously in our city. Oh, so this is going to be difficult. I if I first of all is long overdue, right? This should have been done years ago. But it's coming back. When they're at the Saint John's basketball game, you listen to kiss me in Los Angeles, so loud, big strat. Can you barris who produces blackish the show? Anderson is going to be the producer of the of the movie. So yeah. So it's going to be cool. I wrote quick before we let you go buying zone. You've got to run here in a second. So here's the last piece of audio from genie's interview with Zach Lowe, and she kind of talked about the big picture writing with the Lakers, which we're all focused on. Absolutely. So here's what Jeanie said, I think that magic has been patient. I think that rob Pelinka has done amazing things in terms of giving our roster flexibility and not taking a shortcut to try to just, you know, make the play offs only to lose in the first round.

"Shit right there. This this weekend tooted or rebooted? Here's some things to consider is your feeling about them. Okay. So the news is reporting that coming to America to is moving forward with Eddie Murphy reprising his role as sir came. Zip prince of the moon does. So we're sticking with this moon to thing. So I don't really know. All of what's true. What's not true got you? But I know I read that. Apparently, I came finds out that he's got a long lost sign that sending America in. So he goes these coming back to America again. Oh, so while he was over to thrown somebody. I don't know if it's homegrown scared. Okay. Well, so then it's like about being somebody who was in America before. Now, you're in America in God. And Trump's America. I'm sure we'll get plenty of that. Ooh. And the new queens queens, do not like that. No more. Okay. You know, what I think I like this? No fan. So here's the thing. Murphy reprising his roles. Good thing. Clearly, I hear that. They're like rumors that a lot of other people are coming back James Earl Jones, John Amos and other people. I don't know that I've heard anything official about any of that. I'm sure that they're going to at the very least try to get as many people to come back as before our senior hall. Everyone can't you. But yeah, I think Kenya. Kenya bears. His writing the rewriting the script. Okay. You said Kenya? And I thought you meant no. Oh, please. Please. Okay. Thank god. All right. No thank God. It isn't a no Kenny berries. So apparently, like the original writers were worked on a script because this has been in the works for a long time can't various rewriting. And I think also producing it. And then the director Craig brewer from hustle and flow, directing this sequel. So it looks like it's going to happen. Production could start as early as this year sometime this I'm excited to see what I would like to see this. Yes. I think it's going to be incredibly difficult to come any anywhere coming to America's such a class. Not even just like a classic black film classic. It's just a like an old thing. A lot of people think of rate comedies coming here. The thing about this sequel is that it has its own storyline. That was not introduced in the first movie. And so I think that's going to give it enough to to separate it and let it be its own good movie without necessarily everybody being like shit on the first one, though, even though we'll feel that way..

And I actually did the shot of alcohol still God's I'd write that alcohol man, I spent the night in the emergency room. You know, the alcohol that comes into Brown by my mouth started foaming these. Live at our show with Stu guys on ESPN radio that lebatardshow and friends and south beach sessions, we've been asking you to support the new project that we're doing it's going to happen over a good amount of time. This is not going to be something that happens quickly. You're going to see the growth of it over the next year to eighteen months, but we are beginning slowly going inside and outside of sports. We've got actors comedians directors. We're just basically talking about art in longer form. You know, these are very confining windows were just talking for eight minutes and then commercial ten minutes. Then commercial you can have an actual conversation with someone that's lower and more leisurely. So if you wanna laugh a little bit Neal Brennan is funny. And I don't think a lot of people would listen to Neal Brennan and say, he's not funny. I usually that's a pretty subjective thing, right? Dane cook. Like that he's popular, but he's filling arenas there. Kevin hart. He's not funny. But there aren't a whole lot of people listening to Neal Brennan and then coming away with that's not funny or he's not people. Find him funny. Is there a universal funny? Is there debate on every single comedian is Eddie Murphy was he universally funny, man. I don't think a lot of people were saying, Eddie Murphy, and Jerry Seinfeld or George Carlin or Richard Pryor. Dave chapelle. I don't think a lot of people were saying that they were overrated stand. You have a favorite comedian. Oh, wow. I like Carlin, and I like, Eddie Murphy. But I that's just right off the top of my head. I mean, that's that's two on the mount Rushmore. Right. Like, that's our Eddie Murphy, not on your mount Rushmore wall. I mean, we're talking stand up. Yeah. Murphy Murphy's on the mount Rushmore. Absolutely. You're talking you. You can only choose four though, you can only choose four. Right. So you got to choose from you got you got Richard Pryor, George Carlin. Dave chapelle. Rod Eddie Murphy. Mitch Hedberg, man. I don't know who you put on Chris rock that much as on his standup. I saw him in New York. A couple of times when I was living there. I was now granted it was a long time ago, maybe got better. But I just wasn't that impressed. What's the four? If we had to put together a consensus four. Okay. Carlin has to be on it. Right. I think Carlotta Murphy both how wait a minute. I think prior needs to be on it before. Chapelle says of prior that by the time we got to comedy he had already bleeped it in every orifice. That's that's like by the time. We got there. You look at you look at Richard Pryor's career. He did the Chapelle stuff long before Chapelle was doing in a more dangerous climate to do with it. All right. I'm sold them. Go with prior. I'm good with Eddie Murphy. And I'm good with George Carlin. We need a fourth. But Eddie Murphy. I'm not sure he's in the top. Really? I'm not positive because across across five years. He definitely was across ten years. He definitely was. But then he became something else. Like he was. In fact, you even think of Eddie Murphy now is a comic or do you think of him as an actor? I became dot to do little. So so like, Robin Williams, for example, same sort of thing, right? Robin Williams went from comedian to showing acting range. Thank you stand for that sound Mike anyone back..

"But how would we use the shoe? Just because you have a tool doesn't mean that you have to use? That is Julia Torres maybe my favorite so far another of cliff Mr. picks for convicts to watch in two thousand nine hundred and cliff. What do you love about? Julia. Julia Torres has a very unique sensibility. And I encourage people to go on YouTube and seek out the sketches that he's written for SNL usually on SNL. They don't credit who wrote which sketch beacon sort of tell when Julio wrote a sketch because he has such a unique stamp. He wrote a sketch called wells for boys and a sketch starring Ryan Gosling called papyrus. Both are hilarious both extremely memorable. Encourage people to check those out. And despite the fact that he writes for SNL has been on Jimmy Fallon several times. He's still not a household name. And I think maybe two thousand nineteen will be the year that changes that for Julio. If you're just tuning in. I'm speaking with cliff nester off as a comedy historian, an author of the book comedians. Drunks thieves scoundrels and the history of American comedy. So far we've been talking about some of the new. Voices in comedy that you say we should be looking out for you. Also want to talk a little bit more about the established voices and comedy, we might be seeing again, including and this is really exciting including you mentioned, Eddie Murphy. What's Eddie Murphy up? Do that makes you excited in two thousand nineteen? Well, Eddie Murphy is is going to be really in the news this year with a movie that's coming out. It's a comedy biopic. That'll be on Netflix later in the year written by a screen screenwriting duo, Larry cares. You ski and Scott Alexander, and Larry and Scott are the guys who are responsible. Most recently for the people vs OJ Simpson. But if you go back to the nineteen nineties, they did another people versus movie called the people vs, Larry Flint, and they're known for doing sort of cheeky biopic that are both dramatically. Exciting and hilarious, most notably. A Tim Burton movie that started Johnny Depp, and Sarah. Jessica Parker and Martin Landau called Ed Wood back in one thousand nine hundred four what those guys did for Ed Wood. This filmmaker who was so bad. It was great. They are now doing with Eddie Murphy for a guy named Rudy Ray Moore best known as dolemite this nineteen seventies. Blaxploitation movie star real guy Rudy Ray Moore had been a stand up comedian on the chitlins circuit very flamboyant. Very outrageous, and Eddie Murphy has completed principal photography in this film. And the early reports are that it's just monumental that he's fantastic. And so you're going to hear a lot about this. I want to play for people who aren't familiar with Rudy Ray Moore? This is a clip to the film. You just mentioned. I'm the one that killed Monday. Hold up. Thursday detail pod. Jones. I'm the one that had the elephants roost in trees and all of that. Bb? From the first that is Rudy Ray Moore cliff. So why do you think Eddie Murphy, you mean famously wouldn't wouldn't even do any stand up on the SNL anniversary a few years ago? Why do you think he's interested in telling the story of agree more now? Well, Eddie Murphy, like pretty much anybody involved in comedy was inspired by those who came before, you know, his hero was Richard Pryor. But he loved red FOX. He loved Rudy Ray Moore. These were these sort of original African American comedians who crossed over to white audiences in the nineteen sixties and seventies. So I know Eddie Murphy grow- grew up hearing Rudy Ray, Moore comedy albums. Probably grew up seeing the dolemite movie the human tornado, the avenging disco, godfather, PD wheat, straw, the devil. Son-in-law? These are the four Rudy Ray Moore movies, which you'll hear about in this film. I think he just has this incredible affection for these comedians who came before and certainly Rudy Ray Moore influenced a lot of hip, hop culture. You hear him sampled a lot. He was very proof. Fain and he's just an incredibly enjoyable novelty for anybody. But especially for somebody who's getting involved in comedy at a young age as Eddie Murphy did. So let's just move to sketch comedy right now. I want to start out with a group at a Minneapolis called the fourteen ninety ones. They're all indigenous. We're not gonna play a clip because their work is almost entirely visual. So it doesn't really work in the radio as super briefly because we're we're nearly at a time. Why do you think people should check out the fourteen ninety one four thousand nine hundred lines again, a very unique perspective like you say an all indigenous sketch troupe featuring a guy named Dallas gold tooth. Who was a very well known environmental activist and comedian has worked with the. Yes, men doing satirical pranks. He also was one of the organizers of the standing rock protest against the code access pipeline two years ago and their comedy is really well informed. Really interesting unapologetically indigenous and anybody who is a non native should really seek them out there. Well known in native circles, not so well known in non native and white circles encourage everybody to go on. Youtube and look up the fourteen ninety once and your last pick is another sketch group. They're called tall, boys. Demand. They're based here in Toronto pretty new there's no recorded material. I've been hearing about them to around town, which is so rare cliff what struck you about what Talboys demand doing tomboys demand describes themselves as a diverse group acting diversely diverse. Meaning that two of the members are black one is Asian and one is first nations and that informs their comedy, it's very politically charged. But at the same time, they're very goofy. They're very funny. They're very clever. They've only been together since October two thousand sixteen mostly playing at the Rivoli Toronto. Which is where the kids in the hall got their start, which is sort of apropos because Bruce McCulloch from the kids in the hall has sort of been mentoring tall boys to man. And so you can keep your eyes open later this year. It looks like Bruce McCulloch will be helping to produce something for Talboys demand. I think they're going to be very well known in a very short amount of time. We had Bruce McCulloch in not that long ago for the new kids in the hall book. Did you get a chance? To read that. I did I got it for Christmas. It's called one dumb guy by Paul Myers. Who is the brother of Mike Myers, and I just loved it. It just instilled me with nostalgia. And joy and love for this sketch troupe. That really were the biggest thing going in Canada more of a cult following in the United States, but we're very very influential and also the trajectory of Mike Myers. The brother of the author of the book and how he and kids in the hall kind of coincided and competed with each other in the early eighties before any of them were famous. Also, quite fascinating. Yeah. I really recommend the new kids in the hall book. It's great cliff Esther. Thanks for talking to me today. My pleasure. Thanks, Tom cliff, nester office, a comedy historian, author of the book the comedians. Drunks thieves scoundrels and the history of American comedy. One more song before we say goodbye, it is January ninth. And.
