"You become better. Because the energy that they bring and that confidence that they bring and just not so much because by that time, technique is already technique is already done. You have a style, you have a way. And there's always a technique, but it's so well grooved in. They're not really trying to launch into their technique, you know? They just pick up the script and they're like, you know, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, hitting every moment as they go down through the script. And they'll do it on the first take. So, you know, I always shoot a rehearsal. That's one thing I always do is I filmed a rehearsal, even if I don't use it because I know that those guys are going to be on. Right. And you might capture something really nice. So I would say, okay, we're going to do one rehearsal and then we're going to do the take. And they're like, okay, you know. So yeah, they bring it. It was so fun to watch them. It was such a great learning experience, you know? And the learning experience, even if I didn't really see it on when I was there on the set, in the editing room, I'm just like, wow, you know, every take these guys are just, you know? And I had Charlotte Lewis, who was in the golden child of Eddie Murphy, right? They brought it every take, you know? And Karina RICO, who was plays Angela, the main character.

"Don't get much bigger than eddie murphy. And he has gotten a gang back together for the sequel to one of the most beloved comedies of all time coming to america where he's pretty much plan after cast take a look. What do you do. Vaki edna just discovered that. I may have a son here in this land much support. She confronted the king pays. No child support no ties up off at thirty years and you came back well for the very first time on the view. The most wonderful eddie murphy. Anyone them to the show. Thank you so nice to be here. Well we're thrilled that you're here and we're thrilled that the sequel coming to america and two is a huge success and was the number one streamed movie over the weekend and spin. I almost catering to say at thirty three years. Since the original came out cult classic. I know an unknown understand that you and arsenio decided you know he was here earlier. You guys made a pack. Never to make the sequel. So what happened which once we didn't really make it wasn't like we made a pack. We never thought about doing a sequel. We felt that the story ended in the afternoon. It was the end up and then the movie over the last thirty years. It became like a all the movies that i've done. It's the only movie that kind of became like a cult movie where it has like people on halloween negative dressed up as some characters. And there's a place is a restaurant that that i out elated. Like change itself over to a mcdowell's restaurant on halloween. So as little stuff from the movie became like catchphrases in the culture people say sexual chocolate when something sexy in came it became like this cult movie. And that's what i was like. Hey this if we could figure out a way to connect those dots there's an audience for a sequel to them. Whenever i see hair product i think of soul glow. But you're you're back not only as a team but his other fan favorites clarence. The barber has customer. Saw and randy watson the singer of sexual chocolate now coming to the first of many times you played multiple characters in a movie with the help of makeup and prosthetics. Why is that something. You're toronto always. You know the very first thing that i did as when i when was a kid with the kind of show business when i was about eight years old my mother to get me a ventriloquist and That's the first thing i ever tried to control across on from the very beginning. I was doing when trying to be more than one. And then i was always fascinated with the the In the movies like a hunchback of notre dame and the planet apes and any movie that had makeup and i was always fascinated that stuff as a kid and then a peter. Sellars is one of my heroes and Nobody does multiple character by this characters. Like him and what john lens was kind of like the first won. It was like a you know you could do this. All jewish makeup and you can do the accent good and you can do this character and that was like started on multiple characters that way and then i i loved it it was like wow when i'm just me i have eddie i have my little eddie moves and i can do to be funny but then when you strip at all the way and say okay now you're a little old lady or now you're an old jewish man it's like funniness whole different. It just give me. It gave me this whole other canvas to work which i don't know why more people don't do it. I love doing it. Just frees you up as an act because it's not easy. That's your your your spectacular spectacular and of coming to america to is spectacular spectacular. Also but coming to america the first movie was really groundbreaking and almost all black casts depicting black excellence in a black royal family from the mythical african country of wound up. And and you've said the romantic fairytale aspect is really important for black culture. To what do you mean by that. Well we don't get a lot of movies like that usually when we tell stories dramatic and it's Go go to the movies lots of times. We're not just you know being entertained. It's all these other buttons getting preston. It's some social issue that's being dealt with it. We don't get to go just have regular estate. Escapism at the theaters. That much and coming to america is that it's not it's nothing you know but cure straight up entertainment with universal themes that you know all around the world people can relate that is no somebody trying to find true love and you know in tradition and doing the right thing and it's a lot of the same things as in the fiddler. The roof is in coming to america. Universal beams so it makes it accessible to everybody. And that's why the movie it might be the maybe black panthers the second one coming to america's the very first movie with you know all black cast mostly black casts at successful all around the world nets. Because you know it's not a local issue that we're dealing with. It's also been so amazing to see that most of the original cast is back in the movie but there are some new faces to including your real life daughter nineteen year old bella who plays one of your three princess warrior daughters in the movie. U2 are on the cover of essence magazine this month. this is her first acting role. What tips did you give her. And she's just absolutely stunning. Gosh you so much. That's my beautiful baby girl. Oh we've she's been acting for a few years now. She has a little acting school which she goes to We read a little scenes and stuff. We do seem like if she watches movies. And she likes them. A movie workload from the movie agnes guide and kramer versus kramer and stuff like that. So we've been working together around the house for years. So when she auditioned for the road she got the role you know. She had already been an nfl her any pointers anything kind of did it cracked in the puck. My beautiful baby. It's a family affair. So any damage changed changed. Everything i understand that you were working on some new stand up material. You haven't done standup since you're to iconic specials in the eighties delirious and raw and i'm wondering why did you get the urge now. Do still have it. And since the pandemic you know is still upon us and are you working any differently now than you did before haven't started what happened was i just kind of took a break from making movies in two thousand eleven and maybe six seven years went by and do anything and then it was like oh camera. Go back to work again. The plan was to do dolemite and to go back to saturday night. Live and do coming to america and then go out on the road you know after..

"Women are afraid to take a job that they haven't done before exactly and they're scared of it. So i have a quick story about that when i was in stand up in the early years. I think it takes. You would know this be at least five ten years to be really good at stand up comedy. It's a very hard thing to do. And you have all different kinds of audiences and you have to work at act so it was about a couple of years into it and i had maybe twenty or thirty. Let's say thirty minutes of material right. And i got a job at the concord in the catskills and the job was to do fifteen minutes. I didn't have fifty minutes. I only had thirty minutes. My husband steve said to me talk slow job. Miraculously it turned into a fifty minutes. Set i don't know how to this day how i pulled it off. I didn't. I didn't know how to work the house. Seattle anything or make was scared to the tippy toes. And i did it and don't just want to say one more thing about that. Don't take this as it being easy. I was nauseous. Probably in the bathroom. It was horrible. That i did it right so sunny you which of these issues do think need to be addressed for me. It's pay equity. It's the it's the gender pay gap did that panel yesterday with my friend venus williams and it was all about the gender pay gap. And you know. Currently women make eighty one cents the dollar that men earn and women of color even far less and it just seems to me that companies are getting decent at diversity and inclusion. But it's d. I e the equity portion companies just aren't good at and if you look at families of color more than four and five black. Mothers eighty-one percent are breadwinners in their families meaning. Their households depend on that paycheck. And the other thing that i've noticed is that you know diplomas don't equal dollars and women are getting educated more than men but the diplomas aren't giving them higher salaries and women are still asking for more money. It's not like women aren't trying to negotiate higher salaries that just not being given the money right. So that's a big problem. How 'bout you make it okay. How about you megan. You know this. This is a hard one for me. Because i've actually had the luxury of really working with a lot of really incredible men The the patriarchy. I feel more systemic in society. I actually have been treated really respectfully as generalization. I think the best advice it was ever given us just negotiate like a man. I love it and speaking of men. Eddie murphy. "In the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe megamall us entirely there right. I don't believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth. And i think the damage done to the british monarchy and to the queen at a time when prince philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible quit escape for all those reasons. Are you buying that megan. Well i think to put this into context in the uk. They have very strict standards and regulations. That you can't Be harmful or offensive towards anyone and he had said that he questioned making markle contemplating suicide which is obviously agree. Gis and deeply unkind I am also a free speech advocate. I'm an opinion host was very controversial opinions. And i don't. It's a very foreign wild west concept the idea that you can have an opinion and and be cancelled for it but i do think when you're talking about decorum of kindness and talking about mental health. There was huge outrage. I think they had over. Forty one thousand complaints Given to good morning britain which was the show he hosted. I think this is a really tricky one for me because again i any kind of censorship You know it makes me uncomfortable and you know again. I think anyone who makes her living off of giving their opinion especially ones. That aren't popular. Feels that way. That being said is cruel and unkind to second guess someone who is being very open about their mental health issues. She actually megan markle herself. Put in a formal complaint against piers. Morgan and the only thing i have to say about that is meghan markle interview. The only thing i questioned was she said that she didn't read her press and she didn't read her publicity. She's clearly paying attention to press and publicity. If she's putting a formal complaint and vinyl thing there rumors that there's gonna be a rupert murdoch right wing network being launched in the uk coming forward. I wouldn't be surprised. Appears morgan ends up being the head of that. Wow i mean he that will be very interesting to see. I mean but will it survive. I wonder because they seem to be going through all kinds of mac nations over there. But we'll talk more about this when we come back we'll be right back. We view this is a moment in history. Hold these truths. I just like seeing americans being able to speak to its power proof before anything to be self evident we the people for the people by the people that all women all men all people are created equal. We can't expect empathy if we don't give it as well and free to openly voice their views truth justice and the american way so there you have it would ever your view thoughtful talking the issues help americans understand what was going on so i want all of you. "To the view. Sarah is not here today and you know the fallout continues to happen over. Megan harry's interview queen. Elizabeth broke the silence from the palace with statements saying that the whole family is deeply saddened by claims that couples made particularly the ones about race and while. Some reckoned recollections vary. She takes them very seriously and will address them privately. Now i guess everyone is asking. Did she say which she needed to say here. I'll start with you joy. Well obviously the queen does not watch the view. Because i told her yesterday what to say and she did not listen to me. She did not. She did not aggressively denounced racism that it will not be tolerated anywhere specifically in the palace I didn't like the idea of recollections may vary because it leaves room for reasonable doubt that maybe harry didn't hear it right or maybe he made it up her shock that they were someone. Happy has been going on since two thousand sixteen hours. A little tight on her head if she didn't recognize that these two were not happy all that time and so in conclusion i would give her a c. Plus okay megan. Would you think of her statement. Well i mean. I started watching the crown. Actually because we talked about it so much that i thought it was worth watching and i actually really enjoyed the series because i never really thought that much about the queen and when you watch it you realize that she's sort of been obsessed and very cognizant of the fact that the sovereign is very fragile that it can go away at any time and i think the question right now. Is your clearly seeing a queen. A monarchy that has been unable to modernize and sort of You know to have an opportunity with megan harian and move towards the times that we're living in. There's a really interesting washington post article out today. That's talking about this debate about whether or not Queen elizabeth and a great britain should have a commonwealth nations underneath it and particularly in australia. You have the former prime minister malcolm turnbull coming out very assiduously saying that. We no longer need the queen as any kind of head of state should be an australian and they are. I think as i said on monday about this if you are someone like the fijian islands if you are new zealand if you are a country that has non white citizens as the majority. How do you feel about having someone possibly become your next future. King who has said allegedly racist things about your grandson. These are very serious. Allegations as i said on monday the geopolitical ramifications of this i think are going to continue to be felt and we'll see if a post elizabeth a great britain and kingdom can exist still having commonwealth colonies because it seems to be something of the past sunny. What do you think that do you think she said enough no. I don't think she said enough. I agree with everything. That's been said. I mean i think what was most troublesome Is that she didn't deny the allegations and that that notion that some recollections may vary that but they are taking things very seriously and that they're going to address it within the family privately. This was the time to address this publicly to say things like joy said we will not tolerate racism. Racism within the palace within our country Within the uk within the commonwealth that that was really important was an opportune time. I think for for for the queen to do that. And i'm actually very disappointed especially in light of the fact that before the interview the palace was very clear that they would be investigating alleged bullying by meghan markle so they were very interested in doing that publicly but not so interested in investigating any sort of racial allegations. And so i. I'm very very disappointed. And it just seemed to be a very disingenuous statement when she said also. We didn't know that they had such a troubled time here. I mean you're the queen. Of course you knew well. Well i don't know. I wonder how really connected. Everybody is if she missed it with diana and she's missed it with megan maybe she's not as tuned in as we thought what. I think it'll be interesting to see what happens. Because it's kind of rare for her to come out and actually say something. And i thought it was kind of like well. I guess that's where you're at. But you might want to remind people where you're supposedly where you stand because you've taken out all kinds of you know positions in the past in the name of the monarchy and you know granted. She's not writing all of these things for herself. But still you know. I think there's more to come. I don't think this is quite done yet. I think people are really fired up about it including the next guy appears morgan. Who's been a vocal critic of the duchess and after walking off the set of good morning britain of the backlash. He's getting he announced. He's leaving the show for good. Here's what he had to say about all of it. I believe in freedom of speech. I believe.

"Yes yes. How many of these incidents happen after this song came out. Did eddie murphy do this. The people i was literally murphy said did do it. But it's the first thing i thought. Oh shit maybe eddie is is the one. That's guilty of getting people to put trees up their butts. Do see the fucking cover art. He's laughing because he knows he knows people are going to listen to the song. Actually put this stuff up there as iago for this nearby. I think my favorite thing is the rhyme scheming here case face frowned clown down boat. Moat coat are all the rhyming. Words all narrow got pretty funny. Yeah a lot of these are really vague. Some dust in nearby like that and he's using drugs slang. Put some crossed in your pizza crust pizza crust pizza. Gross put a telephone and your but puts them in your but it's a must in your but pizza crust in your but put a telephone in your but he says telephone twice. He was just literally looking at the table. Like in the recording studio and was like That that that. I also have known people that worked in x ray department in maybe an er room somewhere in america and have said they have literally seen. I'm like literally laughing at the same time going. Oh man. I remember that time. They message me as they saw everything in your but put a frown real. Good thing about your body. That's maybe kind of important it. It probably does feel real good to just like singing about your bud. I guess if we were taking this super seriously and trying to figure out how to have a real critical commentary on this song. It's like a reaction to not talk about your but him because he says it feels real good to sing about your but just wonder if he had like friends around him that were talking all the time about putting shit in ass and he was like okay. Dude stop stop putting stuff up your but as cutting edge. As his comedy was at the time. I really do feel like eddie murphy is probably just like the most vanilla dude in your personal life. I don't think so. I don't think he's pretty very bonelli. Don't remember when he got arrested for..

Because that will always keep you with a cultural lens through all aspects of it from from how people art the most censorial physical aspects of it to the most symbolic aspects of it when you think about it that way though that filter will always be there From a culture perspective it will put culture front and center. So it'll make it harder for you to miss where where you actually have nuances and differences. That are important to take into it. I mean you. You said jobs to be done in like speak my language. They're in love. I want to talk a little more. This idea of experiencing cultures through the census. Because this is really interesting to me. And i don't think i've and i guess what i'm thinking about. You know a lot of the researchers that i've spoken to on the show and our customers like they are talking about like researchers have assertive neat sharyo city right to just understand people and oftentimes. It's in the context of a product or a brand or an advertisement. But this feels like you know. We need to be just going a level deeper into that empathy of understanding people's cultures. What's important to them. What their experiences are their life. Experiences are before. We're asking them how like you know. did they. For regular diet or whatever you know which feels like you know kind of right up our alley as an industry right curie like feeding not curiosity just stand people better and not so much you know understanding people as consumers but having the empathy for understanding people people and really like understood having a better more clear understanding our differences in our similarities absolutely at the that sort of since oriel experiences is so key to getting there. I'm reading a book. All whole recommend called extended mind Eddie murphy paul from remembering correctly but this idea of extended mine is i geek out on it. it was something i was. I was into a lot when i was back in graduate school. But it's that idea that we have a brain bias so so as researchers are default is to ask about what your thoughts and what are your feelings and it's like the most abstract level and we quickly jump to that before we've gotten to the you know what it was it like moving through the space and what were you touching and hearing and smelling and tasting and the textures and all the things that when you think about it. That's what makes up culture. Those are the that they both express culture but also shade culture and we. We often skipped because we're racing to the abstract thoughts and feelings before we got to be the actual physical experience the censorial experience of it of power. So interesting to me. I guess like how do you get to that..

I was hooked on him with his stand up tour one hundred years ago when he wore the red leather suit called. I think it was called delirious. Was the name of his big special. I'm sure i saw twenty times. Yeah a long time ago. Gooney google gusts and all that stuff. Yeah i love that. I love that and had to be one of the most imitated performances. Ever right how many people prevent the next twenty years. I couldn't have an ice cream cone without going. I got some as yeah. You cannot have it or go back and look at it folks because some of it wouldn't be able to joke about today but he he would he in. It was funny very funny. If eddie murphy did some of that up today it would be It'd be the end of them probably. Yeah probably and. I guess i like to the other one was of course the cult movie with right switching places what was it called trading places rating which please hands and feet above all other movies tv. That was a good movie. They actually had a nod to it in. So i'm bringing this up. Because i saw coming to america on the weekend with my wife and she was a huge fan of the first one so My wife is she's got most of her tv tastes are in the crime genre and Yeah so anytime. I can get it. I watch a comedy and she loved this one i'm i'm pumped so. We sat down and watched it and i didn't think it was as good as the first but it was. It was exactly what you expect. Pretty mindless craziness had some moments of hokey in that Well let's be honest. Eddie murphy and arsenio hall come from a different time. I thought that was him in the trailer. It is yeah. They were the two stars of the original in their back again. There we go okay. I get it i get it. Yeah so yes no seven ten six and a half seven. That's about where i'm at on. It i mean are some really corny moments in there as well but It's basically if you like the original. You'll like this. When i would say the only difference is there's a lot more dancing and they introduced wesley. Snipes we haven't seen in years And yeah you know. Yeah he he's the villain in this thing and he was fantastic and you'll come away if you're a tracy morgan fan. If come away feeling wow did they. Underutilized that guy in this movie. I'm a. I'm a tracy morgan. Fan steve morgan freeman. You're doing who was also freeman think. Jeez wow however steve you said. That's morgan freeman. When i did it. Oh yes i got it for sure. Yeah i might have. I might have said his name. You always noise that. I'm a huge tracy morgan fan. Well i've heard you attempted mortgage freeman. Freeman is good by the way steve. Okay listen we gotta get back to sports. Okay you okay. You have a chance here. Okay you have a chance. I am the barometer. And you've you've been convinced of that. You believe that now. I'm the barometer on netflix. Stuff okay on the streaming. Okay and all that stuff as i watch it all day long You have a chair. Busy man aren't you. I'm a busy guy. Okay but my recommendation. Steve are eleven's okay. There eleven's okay. The shows i tell you to watch. You have a chance after you take the floor tonight. You got a chance okay. I'm going steve. Us little note here is okay. Talk about the eddie murphy. I'm going okay. This is great. Steve is finding a good one. I ask you to rank it. Yes six or seven hundred ten. Why are you wasting my time. Steve not wasted my time with six point. Five well people. It's a well a movie. Well if it's if it's no good then don't do it. What people would want to know what i think of the new eddie murphy. Movie steve bring a ten. If you're gonna do a movie i would. I thought the murphy thing would make good conversation on top of that because like i say it's a well talked about right now. It was a very popular movie back in the day. And now they've brought back most of the cast to do it again. And i thought people might want to know what i thought of it. It's dumb according to dom that's six six and a half dumb. I wouldn't say that. Just bring it. Steve brings something okay next time. Not not a six or seven on telling you. I'm not gonna watch it now. It's fine that's fine going to go back and talk and go through the stuff dissect everything you talked about in there. were you. Refer to the senators goalie as the goalie. Dak art or whatever his name is. What is the kid. The kid the kid card. Yeah yes whatever his name is. And i didn't boss john anything in there and there were a couple of chances. Where could you up on. Your lack of sends talk there. I know i know you're thinking should have been jimmy. Don't bother with returning home to the united states to or whatever it's called don't bother with coming to america and it's got the number two in there because it's a sequel the second one about dak prescott stevie animated cares about and for the dallas cowboys. Nobody cares about him okay. He's done shite okay. he's about. I was watching just watching the analysis the analysis on this contract forty mil for four years or something one hundred sixty million over four and everyone's all of them stevie all the pundits. I'm curious to what you have to say. But all of them were going. This is this just does not make any sense. The they're not you know if you're signing a guy to forty million a year then almost assuredly they would be the favourite in their division which the nfc nfc east right is dallas and they would be the favourite. everyone's going. yeah but they're not the favorite even with this.

"And like that's not meant for television but you can hear it. Of course these excuses. No crowd stop it. Knock it off. Yeah it's not like the team's gonna come to a dead stop and go. Oh my god. Did you hear that drives cut that goal. We weren't sure it's just stupid it's stupid. I've been annoyed by it all year. But edmonton's just for some reason just that sort of high pitched. Yeah well calgary says we're steve. That's where i noticed it last night. I think in Anyway yup bicameral stop all stop. They can go right away Couple of notes on the game A lot of fans in this town were upset when the sense traded away. Eric carlson It's looking like a stroke of genius. Because carlson the kind of money he's making in the ways playing You probably would not want to be attached to that contract right now. But they don't really need to be lamenting the loss of carlson. Even if you're his biggest fan because you have the same player i i was thinking tonight. You know. it's the same player you have. Thomas chabad here. he's just so great with the puck. Some really nice russia's he had a couple of assists one came in that school. The dad scored. So i'm not going to give them too much credit for that but he had a nice low pass on the steps legal but man the same time. Just a mystifying choices with the puck like it's just if you have time in space with the puck jimmy you've got the puck got time and space. You don't need to use it all it'll like you can make a quick play move. The freakin puck like at the end of that game. The sensor trying to get back into it down three to about five minutes left in the game. Thomas chabad gets the pocket whips around him at the blue line. He's on his backhand but he's got about what looks like. I don't know thirty feet between him. And the next guy who happens to be connor mcdavid right connor mcdavid ladies and gentlemen and so instead of doing something quickly say and And safe keep that puck in. He immediately as mcdavid quite a quick player. You may have read. The mcdavid starts. Yeah he starts going at him so chabad. Basically shovels with a backhand shovels the puck directly into mcdavid belly. And he's off on a breakaway. That could have won the game. Joy two chord made about seventy three saves by my count on on On mcdavid as thomas shabad was standing beside the net and watching it go down thankfully ed call in white back checking like a mother But boy i'm getting a little frustrated with the we've been talking about matt. Murray is a good matt. Murray and a bad matt moore. You never know it goal is going to show up. He had the night off tonight. But i feel the same way about. Thomas chabad this season. This season is good. Thomas chabad and there's bad thomas chabad and they both happened within the context of a single hockey game. Unlike murray on on any given night he'll be either good or he'll be bad. Chabad is a mix of to in any given game and say that again right. So you got your kevin lowe always said right. It's it starts with the goal. And i think a lot of people have with the goalie out right. When you're when you're looking at your team you know how good they are going to be. And if you're goalies suspect has a. Let's in a bad goal or two. Has a bad night is getting ripped in the press. They're they're their goals against her way up and they're losing game all the shit that happens when when auto ours having a bad year you know they won. I think they had won five of their last eight or something so there might be five five of nine or something like that In in their last nine games above five hundred. but it's it's going to be a tough year for them right and and what hap- kevin said. What happens is when you get a goal that that isn't going good. It changes every player. It changes every player that they're afraid and they're grabbing the the sticks so much tighter because they can't have confidence or they don't have confidence in their goalie and right and he says you can see a mile away you know and i i was telling you last night after watching the or or whenever we did talk about it today or whatever tasty The calgary off game and one of the key. Kelly ruda was saying you. You can see that. They're playing nervous for all sorts of reasons. You know the ottawa senators and and there's nothing worse kevin said there's nothing worse than wondering if your goal is going to help you tonight or not. It's the most deflating thing in the world can work through most anything flipping a coin guide. Goalie right yeah if You work your ass off. Takes takes so much generally for you as a team to go down and score a goal on the other club particularly the sends who aren't gifted at this stage. They're gonna be good down the road but they don't have high octane offense right now. It's getting better all the time game by game right. They still know they have to work. Hard to generate any goals when they get a goal the last thing they want is to have it given away by golly whipping your goalie within a pockets Shot from forty feet away which has happened so many times this year so i would agree that in the case of thomas. You bought That maybe that plays in little I would also say that's a guy who is not the biggest guy ever saw. And to me i would dial him back to twenty twenty one minutes a game this this business of twenty six twenty seven twenty eight minutes a night too much for your To d is particularly when You know he's playing with new defense partners all the time. It's just changing it just too much and he's also when you talk about maybe things going on between his ears. You just started an eight year contract with eight million dollars this year. That kind of changes your head space out care who you are And shibata producing offense. Don't get me wrong. I mean he's he's leading score on the team now or the two assists tonight off to double check that. But he's right near the top so offensively. It's all going great. But i just i see a player who's I don't know he just has not really progressed. In the last two years on the defensive side of things and i would also argue some mystifying choices with the puck as well so anyway something to keep an eye on with thomas chabad because the sense are paying him to be a superstar sends fans want him to be that he shown flashes of that but he really defensively is not at a good year. We'll take time out of the program when we come back We'll get her a little net. Fiqh net fix net flicks fix Am i what am i talking about. It he was on prime. Anyway i watch coming to america with eddie murphy. So we'll talk a little eddie murphy here in just a second. I'll tell you what i thought of the sequel to nineteen eighties classic. I think it was eighty s And we'll also get into a number of other things as well the sports front that bad day. Stevie what a bad day for dak prescott. Not a not a good guy. He's he's gotten he's getting he's getting pay. God why.

Morning Edition
'Coming 2 America' Goes Heavy On Nostalgia
"Too heavily on nostalgia. Unless you're a huge fan of Eddie Murphy's classic 1988 film coming to America, and lots of people are there's not going to be a lot for you, and it's less than inspired sequel Coming to America. We celebrated her 30 years absolute and prosperity. 30 Years of service. Well, great nation on 30 Years off Delicious fast food. The new film begins with Murphy's Prince Akeem Joe Fair, opening a fast food restaurant called McDowell's in the African Country of Amanda Devote ease of the first movie. No. This chain is owned by Akin's American father in law, played by John Amos, who denies his business is in any way a rip off of another well known burger joint. They've got egg mcmuffins way that a mixed up in this way are also celebrating my new beyond big mix burger, So there's no meat. There's no meat. Maybe we're getting much better with Pepsi Call Max here are subtle as a sledgehammer. This scene mostly gives us an excuse to see Amos and Louie Anderson, who also appeared in the first film, The Story of the original movie was a black centered fairytale. Murphy's a keen came to America, Queens, New York, of course, tow avoid an arranged marriage and find true love in the new movie. After the death of his father, King Akeem discovered he fathered a son unknowingly in America. Teams return to Queens brings one of the Sequels funniest moments when he revisits a local barber shop where movie magic allows Murphy and costar Arsenio Hall to play multiple parts. Just like in the first film can't be both famine and blood. Damn, Nelson Mandela and Winnie just discovered that I may have a bastard son here in this land conceived during my last visit. How much data supports you getting from the King pays no child support. No time for 30 years and you came back. You're the damn it. Comic Jermaine Fowler plays the sun. Lovell Johnson, who brings King a came home to meet his mother marry played by Saturday night Live alum Leslie Jones. My African I told you he was gonna come back. So you know this man. I definitely know this man. I know this man all the way live much as I love Leslie Jones, she and levels. Other American relatives, including Tracy Morgan, as his uncle Come off is uncomfortable stereotypes as King Akeem introduces his son to the moonda and pressures him into an arranged marriage. Comedy gets clunkier and more predictable, like a Mel Brooks style parody of the Black Panther of The Lion King and the first coming to America. Ultimately, this coming to America is mostly an excuse to bask in the glow of characters who's shown so much brighter and distinctively. 33 years ago. I'm Eric Deggans. The Eddie Murphy Hall of Fame
"Are joined by van leith in the cost of higher learning and eddie murphy expert to break down the career. One of the greats. What what i what. I what i was going on with guys hanging in there excited to talk about eddie. We're gonna do a hall of fame here so for the folks out there who have never heard hall of fame episode very briefly. Break down what we do on these episodes. We have built halls of fame for tom. Hanks roger deakins. Nancy meyers toshiro buffoon. A monster movies and most recently george clooney. So it's time for eddie. What we doing we build. A hall is ten films from a career. No more no less. He's got forty movies so we got a lot to talk about here. I'm going to start with this. Amanda eddie murphy. What do you think. I think of multiple eddie. Murphy's i think of a lot of characters all in one movie. This is going to be interesting van. I'm really excited to talk to you about all of these because i've been listening to unsurprisingly. There are a lot of rewatch ables movies. Eddie murphy movies on rewatch bulls and i was listening to some of them in. You're on several of them. And you know i had that podcast thing where you want to respond to the person but you know it's a podcast so now you're here and it's a privilege to get to talk to you but for me eddie murphy is a little bit of. It's a generational cork for me. Because i am just. I think a little bit more than both of you and so i became kind of like movie aware movie sentient like mid nineties. Nine hundred ninety five nine hundred ninety six. And i've done a lot of catch up but if you become aware of movies in the mid nineties that means that the first eddie murphy. You get the nutty professor and then milan. And then shrek. I saw shrek in theaters. Not above it. So you know at that point. He's like the elder statesmen of comedy super established. Like i knew the beverly hills cop steam song and dance to it while before i saw it but kind of understanding him as like family eddie murphy and then catching up on everything else. Interesting chronological or not chronological murphy. Experience for me. Then you want to do your history with eddie. I know you are been living with him for a long time. Yes i have been So i hambur what year this was and i don't wanna insult my parents. Every time i mentioned my parents. I get some minor detail wrong and then i have to hear about it into along to our phone call. Your parents listen airpods today. Let's no your show's. I wish they wouldn't but that's nice. Yeah i wish they would but they My father was taking me to see a movie. We were all going to the movies but this time we were breaking it off like my father was taking me to see one of the superman movies. It's either three or four and my sister. My grandmother my mother went to see beverly hills cop two and this was my first experience with with with seeing people so jazz to see a movie because they went this way. Like we went to the superman franchise. I fell off by that point so we went this way and they go this way when they go this way. They're all of these people over there. And i'm like daddy i wanna go over here and he's i know that's too old for you. We're gonna go watch superman. And i say that because that's the moment that i actually became movie sentient by. That's the start of it. That's like what are these people into. Before that i can't tell you when i i kind of became aware of eddie murphy. Because he's like michael jackson in the sense that there was never a time. I wasn't aware of him. I was born in nineteen eighty so by the time. I start getting Information downloaded into me eddie. Murphy's a part of that he's like a part of that thing but the first time. I realized that this guy isn't just a do that. I see on tv or the guy that that he is. The biggest thing in the world is what i saw. People excited to go for it felt. So that's my that's my memory of him and it's not even necessarily what you might call one of his mega classics like beverly hills. Cop two was the event that you can remember that says a lot. And that's eighty seven net says a lot about where we were with. Eddie he was kind of in the middle of i. There are very few movie star runs in the history of movies like the one he had in the eighties. The rise to fame which starts on. Tv i guess tom hanks Robin williams maybe In terms of just successful movies maybe will in there but those movies weren't weren't quite the same as well. what is there were talking about. It's really remarkable when you think about it. There's no like they're not like high concepts with willa was like he needed to be punching an alien in the face to get to this level and like eddie movies are just like it's especially in the eighty s. Eddie is just running around doing stuff. That's that is what this movie is. He's he's being harassed whether he's a cop or he's a convict fresh outta jail or if he's a guy off the street who gets taken into financial institution like it's just it's entirely built around his persona and his sense of humor which is is unusual. We don't see that very much. These

"Pretty creepy. My right. This was the first commercial we got once the game started. M night. Shamel on this is his latest and greatest. We haven't seen him since. What was that movie? That was okay, but glass glass. We haven't seen him since class. This looks like it's more back to the early Shamil and roots where it's like. Kinda horror asked, but not really. Yeah, it's more of a mystery that they're on a spooky island may be one of them gets a haunted tiki torch or something like on the Brady Bunch. And then all this weird stuff starts to happen to them. Is that the water that is making them age up? Is it going behind that rock? Is it just saying it to the tree trees again? If it's the trees again, we should have seen it coming old still happening? That's the subtitle news Dump. Thea other one, Mac and this is the first time you've seen this trailer, I think, and that is coming to America actually looked at my phone. You know that I wouldn't You know, Mac too much. Leslie Jones. Yeah, I actually looked up when I heard Eddie Murphy say what conduct So I didn't catch that. I think that there are some funny jokes in this trailer. But what scares me about this trailer is it seems like the 3 to 4 jokes that might have made you chuckle. Those were the only funny jokes in the movie. Yeah, I'm not gonna watch this movie so I could care less because judging by the other trailer what they're going to rely on, and this is what they kind of did in the first movie is Eyes. That's Arsenio Hall. That is also Arsenio Hall. You see that guy over there? That's Arsenio Hall. The guy in the back. That's Eddie Murphy, the guy in front right now. That's Eddie Murphy, the guy over there in the corner. That's Eddie Murphy. We get it. They play every flipping the other guy in the back bazaar. That's bizarre. He's in the back all the time. This'll is on prime, I think in May or March used up All right, Mac. What were your thoughts on the commercials during the big game? I thought the commercials were mostly solid. I didn't think they were like any real cringe worthy ones. And I didn't think there were any real all time. Great once. Lot of mildly funny commercials. Nothing stood out to me, though. So when I was going to make this list, I literally had to go back and look things up. Oh, I forgot to put one in here actually was one of the first ones that stood out to me. And it was towards the it was in the second half of the game was the shallow May Edward Scissorhands one. It stood out, but it wasn't good. It wasn't a good commercial. It was like, Oh, maybe they should make Edward Scissorhands with shallow May It wasn't good because I can't tell you what the commercial was about. But That one. I'll remember. I think it was handless driving. Oh, that's right. That's right. It was. It was her fingerless gloves. I want to say, but why not have popped up? That was nice. I know would've popped up. One that stood out to me early was the three D Garrido's one with Matty McConnell. Hey, the greatest commercial but hear me out. We're getting three D Garrido's again. That's pretty jacked up there in the store. I saw him in the store last week. Do you prefer those or regular Doritos? Regular three during our kid is that because you live it too. Dimensional life. I don't know. So I definitely remember three Doritos even when I was a kid, But like they weren't good then and there's no weather. Good. Now just regular Doritos. Do you like crunchy Cheetos or the puff ones? Crunchy. Yeah, I want is much crunch of possible. I agree that we have the General Motors, Norway. Commercial with Will Ferrell, Keenan Thompson and Aqua Athena. This is pretty good. It was pretty good, but also a very odd crew. I liked the idea of the commercial. Will Ferrell was just really annoyed that no Norway had more electric cars per capita than the U. S. Norway so adorable damage. The Waynes world. Cardi B one stands out, but it wasn't funny at all I thought was kind of funny how the problem was. Can you explain Comedy to me? I didn't remember what it was for until I looked it up afterwards. It was for uber eats, and they want to support local business, local restaurants, But I don't remember that from the commercial So you knew all the commercials. But you didn't know what the product was for any of these? No, And that makes it not a good commercial. I really did like the culture one with the coasters. Sorry, and it was with the Cheetos snack mix. Yeah, I thought it was a great use of shaggy and then I like that They worked the lyrics into the conversation. Let me ask you a question. Did culture put a fake patois on his voice? At the end? It sounded like he put a little bit on there, right? They might have Please actor well, he's got in trouble for that In the past. I feel like keep it on the down low he should be doing do they gave him permission? Shaggy said. I could do it, he said. I could, He said, I could do whatever accent I wanted. I could I think the standout one from the night might be the Michael B. Jordan. He's just so attractive. The whole room was silent. Toby was shirtless. So can you make Michael B Jordan? You're Alexa. Is that what that was saying? I don't even know I was so distracted by his abs. I couldn't tell you. I think that's it. And then he was in a bubble bath wasn't real nice. So some sort of Amazon election commercial. I don't remember a book in a bubble barrel bubble bear. I like the Huggies baby commercial. I have a baby. So I like babies now. I actually missed that one. So I don't know what that one was went back and I watched it. I liked the door Dash commercial with the Sesame Street Gang and Daveed Diggs. Of Hamilton fame. I knew who it was. Don't worry. I knew what they were doing like a whole neighborhood theme, and I actually enjoyed that commercial. There are like five of them, though, and they were kind of sprinkled around pretty good. And then we had the state farm. Jake Mahomes Rogers Rut, Drake. You know, everyone's in there. The whole gang from State farm. But that's one of those commercials, though, where there's no substance to it. It's just cameo Cameo. You know that guy I want to feel the love this Valentine's Day, download best beans from the APP store or Google play. It's possibly.

The Lucas Bros, Using Humor 'To Shake Folk Woke'
"Kenny and Keith Lucas are stand up comedians and identical twins. People don't have to react when I see twins. No. Okay, they go crazy like we were in the supermarket looking for some Jell O. Yeah. And we're just about to pick it out. And then some dude came out of nowhere. It was like, you know, you guys have a stick of Doublemint gum. That's from their 2017. Netflix special Lucas brothers were having a moment right now they're writing and starring in a remake of Revenge of the Nerds, But they also wrote the story for the new movie Judas and the Black Messiah. The film premieres today in theaters and on HBO. Max NPR's Elizabeth Blair has this profile. The Lucas brothers are best known for a kind of stoner humor. And here's a rule of thumb You should never do. Shrooms wouldn't do Who looks like you, man. I'm telling you. But underneath the jokes, there's a serious side that draws heavily on their childhood in the housing projects of Newark, New Jersey, called the Garden spires is you always, you know, broken elevators infested with rats and rotten Drug dealing violence everywhere, But you know, there's a community that is people that there's families is my family When they were six years old there, Dad went to prison. My father actually is out of prison. He's not in prison anymore, and it sucks that he's out. I wish he was still there. Oh, yeah. I wanted to go back because all he wants to do is father's sight. Don't like do we pay rent? Now it's over. The Lucas Brothers connection to Newark got the attention of New Jersey Senator Cory Booker in 1999, then a Newark City councilman, Booker went on a hunger strike in front of the Garden spires. He also served as the city's mayor. Here's Booker talking to the Lucas brothers on his instagram. I love your insightful, hard hitting humor and the sort of the Eddie Murphy and S O. My great heroes Coming up, you know, were uncompromising how they used humor to shake folks woke like book arm. Keith and Kenny Lucas went to law school and why you and Duke, But unlike Booker, they dropped out. It was weird Tonto Study law and and kind of be poor and black because it's like, Oh, I see what The consequences of policy and law are like on a daily basis, and especially when it in relation to African Americans and the notion of criminality and how it's projected onto blacks and I see that process. I found myself sort of disengaged very early. I always said, you know what I want to do something that has a direct impact on people. From an emotional standpoint, Judas and the Black Messiah is very emotional. Lucas brothers were in college when they first learned about Fred Hampton, the charismatic leader of the Illinois Black Panther Party in the 19 sixties in the movie he's played by Daniel Cholula, Mother Liberating You can't Murder Liberation is another revolutionary, but you can't murder a revolution for murder Freedom fighter, but you get amount of freedom. He's the Black Messiah. Judas is William O'Neal, an African American who was arrested for interstate car theft and Impersonating a federal officer in the movie. We see how the FBI recruited O'Neill to avoid jail time and earn some money. He was instructed to infiltrate the Black Panther Party. And provide the FBI with information about Hampton O'Neill is played by like Keith Stanfield Target You Like some good information, some nobody else No. Is it some kind of bonuses? I'm I'm counting on it. Bill O'Neill became so much of a Panther insider. He was put in charge of security. He provided the FBI with a floor plan of Hampton's apartment in 1969. The Chicago police raided the apartment and killed two Black Panther leaders, including Hampton for the Lucas Brothers. It was essential to tell the story of how the FBI recruited informants in the black community. I think it's important to see just how insidious The system has been in turning young African Americans against one another. Now they Essentially used poor black people against poor black people to execute their goals of minimizing the threat of black messiah is like we just felt it was important to see both sides of the coin. Whether it's a historical drama or its stand up comedy for the Lucas Brothers. It all comes from the same source in a big thing about our act is that we we always try to ground it and stuff that we've gone through, and it's always been Important for us to talk about these systemic issues and a variety of ways. Now they're writing and will star in Seth McFarland reimagining of 1980 four's Revenge of the Nerds Practice a bunch after school. They called US nerds. So one cool. The Lucas brothers promise that their movie will be almost nothing like the original because times have changed. It's like the juxtaposition of being a bully and a nerd is so different from what it was like in the eighties, where you had this one, a stark dichotomy between what it was bullying what it was to be a nerd. Now that's been fused together, and I think That's why the time is right to make a story about that. The Lucas brothers say it's hard to watch the original revenge of the nerds. Even though the movie was a childhood staple. They're excited to give it an update and to make it personal. Elizabeth Blair. NPR news

"Basie from 1965, a show called Hollywood Palace on ABC just happened to find that and I'll tell you what that is as good as it gets and Mr Sinatra's vocal performance during that. That show was spectacular, and that's why I wanted to put it on the airwaves here. Hey, it's Joe Piscopo and Ramsey Mazda's Sundays with Sinatra right here on legendary 77 W. ABC. Proud to be with you and interesting I like on prefer Frank Sinatra's voice. When it was older. I think it was introduced to him when I started doing the impression on Saturday night Live where you could hear the wisdom and the wisdom and the experience And that and that epic history that Sinatra history, you know, in his voice. I like it when when he was doing two shows a night in Vegas, and you could hear it in his voice, you know, but there On live television. You know, for the millions of people the clarity of his voice was second to none. Francis Albert So not just selling accelerating everything about banks, and I'm so excited, Bobby. Right? Girls on the show. I'm Bobby right now is one of the most talented cats in the world. He's out there, working all the time. I called him. I said, Bobby, you want to come on the show? He has some great Frank Sinatra stories. Don't forget. He's a kid when he first met Frank Sinatra and Frank Sinatra always appreciated the talents of Bobby Rydell. And then the Carol alters a longtime friend. She's my buddy, you know. And she told me that the cutest freighter that just I just called her dad being Richard going over the show. I said, Cal, you gotta call it tell the story. She was actually had dinner at Frank Sinatra's house in Beverly Hills. I leave it at that. I'll tease that all right, And now you could or you could call in if you want 808 For a W A B C 808 48 w A B C. It's 9222. 8489222 800 here. Every Toronto volleys is running the board. It's a A okay, well, we appreciate it. I'll tell you what it's a cold. You know, Windy night. It's a little snowing a little rainy, but we want to swing you through Sunday nights in the best of ways with the listening to Frank Sinatra. I have to tell you this too, before I introduce this next song, if I may Let go live from New York, by the way. So you know, back in the day I remember I was in a little town called Alpine, New Jersey, which is as Northwest is you can go in the great state of New Jersey. I lived there for a while, and I remember Remember Eddie Murphy was living in Long Island and then I convinced Eddie when he ran into some situations in Long Island, he said. That's far in this and that I should come to Alpine man. Eddie Murphy moved to help buy New Jersey. So it's be it's Piscopo did he went out, But it was so while because he had all these, you know these these cars like the Excalibur and a Rolls Royce going down the street. I was driving my Jeep Wagoneer, you know? And it was just so much fun, and it was some now. Now I send my son Joey, my beautiful son, Joey, who was just a baby. Then I send the Alpine school system. I find out who's in the school system. Stevie Wonder's kids. Go. Whoa! Stevie Wonder's in town to this was a little now It's like real. She she? I think Britney Spears is in there. Everybody's up in Alpine, New Jersey, you know. And I, we I moved that one. After Westerners. You got too expensive for me, but sure. I went out the West jersey you know? So so now I got to go to home school home and school night. Listen this and and I go there and I'm a father, you know, and And I'm just being at the the parent teacher. Night and there, Stevie, Stevie went now I knew Stevie Edina. You Stevie? Of course from when he was on Saturday Night Live and he never minded. You know, Stevie and I doing out you are black and I am white. You are blind as a bat that I have sight he'd ever by the great guy and I could remember going to Stevie's house and going over and we would just hang out playing pool and just having fun. Yeah, he did absolutely everything. It was such a nice guy. So cut toe all all those years later, my son Michael, my other son, Michael's 18 years old plays a guitar like Steve by the grace of God like Stevie Ray Vaughan. You know, he plays like Jimi Hendrix. He hears it. He really picked it up. And Phillips ace and the admires album, Eola and all these great guitarists, right, But then he says to me just the other week e a couple weeks ago. Hey, Dad, you know who's the greatest musician in the world? I go? The whole goes Stevie wonder this my 18 year old. I know what Well, How did you pick that? It's like I told them what I just told you about it because you knew Stevie Wonder said. We hung out. We did the sketches and He hit me and Eddie and we used to hang out a little bit, Joe. We went to school with the kids. So I'm telling you for my young 18 year old son who really knows more like a blues rock guitar to understand the genius of Stevie Wonder. It tells you how great a Stevie wonder really is. And what a beautiful person he really is. And you know what? Nobody knew that better. Than Francis Albert Sinatra. As you can hear, Hear from the main event in 1974 and my favorite thing about this song as he pays homage, Frank Sinatra pays homage to Stevie Wonder is the way the old man and when I told him this I told him was that that fires rose..

How Sasha Merci and Dee Nasty Found Their Comedic Calling
"So. Do you to know each other? Okay, so my family and her family were friends way before we were even born, so we were always see to their at family gatherings when we were younger, and then we started getting very close in our teenage years. And that's when we find that. We were identical. Identical yes Indian. D- what was Sasha like as a kid? Sasha was very artistic like I remember when I would see Sasha's especially, because when we were kids, we kind of hated hearing about each other, because our parents were kind of against each other like my mother would always be like Oh. You Know Sasha is doing a plane school in her middle school and high school. And I, and then her aunt, who was had would be like. Oh, well, you know D- Get straight as all the time so. Tired of hearing each other about each other all the time I don't even want to hear, but what we started becoming a little older, and we were forming our own opinions about one another I just remember her being so bad cystic always drawing, always thinking always creating. So loving energy always the first thing you would see when you see especially when she was younger well still. You know as a first impression is. She would always argue she has always like loving, so that was how I remember her as a kid. Sasha! What was do you like? D. was very smart like I. Just knew if you WanNa, know something is I d, Goretti, she. She knew facts all the time, so my aunt was telling me that she has straight as I was very impressed by how young she was, and how she was how she was able to articulate herself and I'm like man animal. He'd been an artsy fartsy and I can't even express myself like she. She can, but. One of the things that I do definitely remember as has a huge heart, and she's just willing to help anybody she she's. She's willing to save everybody and that's one thing I admire about her. She's amazing. Do when you were kids. Did you think that comedy was in the cards for you? I knew that it was going to be in the cards. In some shape or form at come from a very funny family, everyone's always roasting each other. And then my older brother also was very into comedy, and there was one TV how I would have to, but he was watching because there was another option, and he at a very early age I knew about Richard Pryor Eddie Murphy. So I knew that I wanted to do it because. It was something that will show my humor, and also my phone very strongly about something where I wanted to just talk about some recently learned the vile that can be a sluice fast, but if you make it into humor, if you make it funny that everybody wants to listen to it. And Sasha for you know. I didn't think comedy Liz. Ever going to be something that I was going to pursue because I wanted to be a singer. I wants to be the next Whitney. Houston and I didn't like her, but I wanted to make songs and. Just, people were always tell me like you're funny like you're you have a for a funny personality or you not to make jokes, and that also stems from my family, because we don't know how to be serious and if anything. That's. Dramatic happens in the family. We always tend to figure out what's funny, but they also put me onto Dave Chapelle Eddie Murphy and all these. Great giants that I look up to these these days you know.
