They got a hustle a bit. Look at them make it. We tried that once. Remember when I was there? Yeah. And they canceled it. I was disappointing. Really sad. My career. They canceled the launch. Look, I'm putting all of you first, because you're going to launch. You know what's cool though? I wanted to see the boosters. The boosters land. They come back and land, and it is cool. But not today. You go any time. No, I'm going to I'm sticking it out because this is important stuff. Like, you know, like the whole business of managing money is discussed on this show. The way things change and we have talked for years and years about the fiduciary duty of advisers. Now because it's all the rage, every adviser claims to be a fiduciary, and the Securities and Exchange Commission a couple of years ago required everybody who gives financial advice. Well, not everybody, not insurance agents, but all the brokers and registered investment advisers and all to provide a thing called a well, it's under a thing called reg BI, best interests. And if you're not familiar with that, don't feel bad, because nobody knows. But red BI was supposed to, supposed to. Require brokers to act in the customer's best interest. Not as a fiduciary, but I don't know what the SEC. Talk about parsing language. The other guys who miss Bernie made off, remember. They came up with not once. Not three times, not four times. Whatever it was. They came up with this goofy idea that brokers should act in your best interest, but they don't have to act as a fiduciary. So what's the difference? None. Well, in 2023, now they're going to start cracking down on the best interests standard that they weren't enforcing before they probably won't force now. Start laughing now, but I'm not feeling very funny. But here's how it's supposed to work. Your broker, that guy at Ed Jones or Morgan Stanley or ameriprise. Whatever the heck out there is, you know, all of them there guys. They are supposed to on every transaction. They were supposed to do this before, but now they're going to get, they're going to supposedly get in trouble if on every deal they don't tell you. What conflict of interest they might have, and in the conflicts of interest that are spelled out in the regulation, one of them is not disclosing fees and commissions. So you're saying they are going to have to do that. They're supposedly going to have to do that in advance of making the sale. Now, my reading of that says, you need to be given a perspective before you invest. Usually they send them out after. Yeah, you click the button and then it comes the used to come in the mail. I don't think they even do that. But they're supposed to my thinking as they should tell you, but they won't. But at least there's now if you aren't, if it's not disclosed to you, I guess it does at least give you some opportunity to come back after them after the fact. What do you think? Well, I don't think much. You know when all this started? Department. You know how far back this goes? No. What year that was? No. When was that? 2000 and a 1009. Boy, do they drag their feet? That's 14 years ago. Dude. You know, I don't do I think this is going to change anything not much. No, I think you're still going to get bad stuff sold to people, still going to get high expense. Mutual funds, et cetera, get sold to people, and they always they'll bury it somehow. And I got, by the way, don't forget to read this. Thanks. Thanks for being a client. Goodbye. Yeah. And they will. They're going to bury it. And that's why we want we want to talk about this because if you think the government is going to protect you from anything, think again. I think that's another thing that came out of the Madoff thing. You can not connect, you can't plan on them doing that for them. It came out of the Purdue pharma thing. Exactly. You know, there was this horrible problem with opioids, and the FDA was totally aware of it, and yet the guys that Purdue pharma are good guys. We like them. It's the problem with this is a bigger problem overall. Because I'm going to mention the FAA here in the insurance industry. It's with the financial industry regulators with the drug regulators, it's as Tom's going to say with the FAA, the problem is that the regulators know that their future is not with the with the agency for which they work. Their children is in the insurance industry. The brokerage industry, the pharmaceutical industry, pal around with. They were them. Yeah, they want to work in those industries. So you're going to tick off somebody and a pharmaceutical company or a big brokerage firm? No. You won't get the job. It's infuriating. It isn't variating, and again, at the end of the day, this like everything else you have to take the time to educate yourself enough. To protect

"Radio My extra special guest this week is Michelle sites She is the chairman and chief executive officer of Russell investments They run over $331 billion as well as advising on $2.8 trillion and trade nearly $3 trillion a year They're one of the largest managers in the world previously she spent 21 years at William Blair investment management where she served as both a chief executive and chairman of WB funds So I want to talk about the transformation you've helped to affect at Russell but I have to start with your time at William Blair from whence you were recruited to Russell What was that process like How did you come to realize hey I've enjoyed my time at Blair but Russell looks kind of interesting Well I would say that when I was approached about a role at Russell it happened organically in slowly I had known TA associates which is one of the private equity firms that invests and sponsors Russell For quite a long time and then like many things in life it happened slowly And then all at once and it was ultimately one of the hardest decisions that I've ever made And I would say first because I enjoyed my time at William Blair immensely after 20 plus years it becomes part of the fabric of who you are and we grew together As a team we had a fivefold increase from 2001 when I took over and drove it with our team a phenomenal team who were close personal friends today To over 75 billion when I left a fivefold increase and took a startup institutional business that was only a few couple of $1 billion to 28 fold increase So it was a tremendous tremendous ride And I was ready for the for a new challenge and it was incredibly exciting but it was a it was a very difficult decision to make It's been a great decision in retrospect but I always remind myself to be comfortable with being uncomfortable And I would say that was one of those times for sure So let me ask you a question about a quote of yours I've interviewed a number of female CEOs over the years Christina hertz sellers of Voya gene Hines at Wellington Catherine Keating at BNY Mellon penny Pennington at Ed Jones but you had a quote that really caught my ear which involved the rarity and responsibility of your position Could you explain what you mean by that What is the rarity in responsibility of a female CEO in the financial services industry Well I would say first you know we all know it's a rarity There are all of the women you mentioned plus many many more Are coming through the ranks Kate L hillo I would mention as well My global CIO that I was proud to bring on board from Goldman So I'm very I think we're even in more rarefied air to have a woman CEO and a woman CIO Running a major investment institution So I'm excited about that But she was the best person for the job And I think the responsibility is to give voice to authenticity and to certainly learn from every leader and person that you come across and I've had the great benefit of being surrounded by mostly men but wonderful mentors and important leaders And my approach I felt very self assured in but it was very uniquely mine and I think the responsibility is to ensure that you're leading in a way that's authentic to you but I do believe that it makes it it makes it a more inclusive conversation It makes it more focused on outcomes and purpose and I'm not saying that that's a gender specific thing But I do believe that operating in a manner that takes into account the responsibility of the seat is incredibly important Historically finance has been wildly underrepresented of both women and people of color and it's been a long slow transition but it's pretty clear that it's been changing it's still behind where it should be But there can be little doubt that it is so much better than it was when I started my career 25 or so years ago Coming up we continue our conversation with Michelle sites Russell investments chairman and CEO discussing the state of investing today You're listening to masters in business with very red holes on Bloomberg radio Market you could save big when you.

Yeah it is a switch There was A pretty Two three year run of not so good football In south haven. But they've turned things around their six and three this year well What else we got. What else we got In the division six water league at constantine and then also in that district so basically who they might play next michigan center is ed jones ville What else do we got. Democrats and one republican South carolina's tim scott Here's some other things. Although air traffic has been down during the pandemic typically at any given moment there are approximately this nine thousand seven hundred planes carrying one point two seven million people in the sky. And we're talking about flying cars. Could you imagine how many more issues we're going to deal with We don't need those years. I don't like the traffic on the roads let alone trying to have people fly. That's a horrible idea. I rather. I'd rather sit in a driverless car before i sit in a flying car. Yeah it'd be cool to fly over the ocean in my car. But i just don't know if i've got to deal with other people other drivers and other flyers in the air and it's all on autopilot and everybody avoids everybody but that's also something that could go wrong to airliners you know they use autopilot. Two guys are sitting right there and they're making sure everything's good So we'll see i i. The future is coming faster than we think. And we will have all that stuff driverless cars and all those different things probably rather soon. Yeah yeah i was. I was listening to a podcast about a guy that was in one of those We've we've talked about the other day. Waymo where it's a driverless car and It's down there testing this all out down in in arizona. Oh okay actually. Joscelyn's uncle works for company Intel and he helps work with the chips. And all the technology within those driverless cars and he said there there's still some kinks to work out. Some things are moving pretty well. That stuff A it's pretty neat. I honestly we're at this day and age that pretty soon The next probably the next couple generations of kids won't have to take drivers because they'll just get into driverless car. That's i mean you've got cars that don't have two parallel. You don't have to parallel park. They use hit zoos. Sensors that so it it could happen. I know there's going to be a lot of people myself included and older generations. That will will not want to be in a driverless car. But hey if you can Get to where you need to go. And everything's done safely. I i like to drive. i do. I do too. I don't like to ride in the car. But i'd like to drive. See i but you could probably i. I wonder if there's going to be like a switch on there. That's just like a kid switch because you know when you were a kid and you'd sit in the driveway and said your parents car and you would act like you're driving you turn the wheel and then you'd beat the horn and all that. I got big koerbel for doing this. Because i took the karate geared and went downhill into all. My dad was not at all happy. Yeah i'm sure i did the same. I did the same thing but it was just. "Below, running it for David. You know, we've talked a lot about these five drivers that came into this weekend. Mathematically eligible, and we think Carnival agreed that Marcus Ericsson was the long shot. This is not what he needs. Today. Running in the 18th position. If he wanted any shot. It was going to have to be race winds very likely. If he doesn't improve on this 18th spot. We may be able to cross him off the list heading to Laguna Seca. The race is finished as we see it right now. You're exactly right. It's really down to two uh, the top four. This point, cause there's 40 points separating the top four and by their really tired of the top 3 16 points 18 points between those drivers so You know, I mean, crazy things happen early in this race, but for what? Graham? Ray Hall qualified good. He ran good. He's played this game the best so far. But what has happened? Maybe Pato did not, and it really leaves a good point point race. For us to watch Graham Ray halls, advantages. 1.5 seconds. It's grown at times to 1.7 seconds over Ed Jones. Sometimes it will drop to about 1.3. As you see the back and forth action with all of these drivers, presumably Trying to save a little fuel to make sure that they can do it on just one stop. Ray Hall is your race leader. Ed Jones second. Jack Harvey is third. Alex Below runs the fourth position. Alexander Rossi is fifth. Rossi has been putting the pressure on Alex below the last handful of laps as he made a thrilling pass to move up to fifth getting around. Not just Scott Dixon, but Joseph New Garden as well to Masada runs an eighth. Colton heard his ninth. Felix Rosenquist is 10th Alex Wolff. Jack Harvey only has a couple races left with that Meyer Shank racing team. And he's given that 60 car a good run in third place he is, but he has been given a little bit of my guess. A dilemma of sorts for a driver to try to figure out he's been told by the timing stand to try to get the best fuel number that he can, but also try to close the gap on Ed Jones. So maybe David can speak to how you can Maybe do that. Try to somehow hit a good field number, but also try to run down your adversary in front of you. Yeah, well as a driver, it's like, can you give me one or the other? Because you're asking for a bit of a miracle to catch the guy from you and say fuel That's pretty Impossible task to be honest with you. But Harvey, actually, I feel that he at that, you know, he pitted last pin on that 40 grand at 35. He has five more labs and Graham and I think if they think grams, Okay, Harvey needs just to continue to save fuel. Yeah, try to catch Jones, but it's going to be a task to do that. We're trying to save fuel. Yeah, it doesn't look like that. Harvey is necessarily keeping pace with Ed Jones. He has slept about 1.2 seconds behind. And quite honestly, it looks like Albert's below. So it's close enough to pressure Michael, Let's pick up. It's the battle for third, Harvey Below and Rossi all nose to tail out of turn number three. Yes, And that battle for third has actually grown. I should say the advantage for Jack Harvey over Alex below about four or five laps ago. I thought Boy Alex Polo is going to be able to get around Jack Harvey. So I'm not quite sure if he's able to not only catches Jones and save fuel, but he's able to at least gap himself a little bit further away from Alex below. Although Pelo does close it down to about three car lengths is Harvey and Pillow. It's turn number eight. Hello, would love to find his Way onto the podium if that's what is in the cards for him, But to do that, he's got to get around. Jack Harvey not able to make up any room right now is they work their way off of turn Number eight and through turn Number nine. The lead belongs to Graham Ray Hall. Feels like this caution could have timed out perfectly for some not so good for others. Let's talk a little bit about the strategy. First of all, How do you think this affects our new race leader Graham Ray Hall? Well, I think may her grandma. Unfortunately, we'll just have to wait and see. Now he needed about six laps of fuel to get to the end of this race. If this caution goes six laps and may benefit him, it just depends on how long this yellow is going to be. Who I think it definitely advantage is the guys we talked about that went off course. The first lap Pelo Dixon Rossi Rosenquist because they were barely going to make it on feel barely with this yellow and helps them they'll just stay on their strategy. Possible war dominates the early portion of this race. Davey, Are you surprised that these strategies for Graham Ray Hall and Pato Award clearly not matching up here early in this race? Marcus Ericsson is in and he is quickly being attended to by the crew off the breads in back to reds here, that's first up. We've said that so far today, Marcus Ericsson. Back into the fight. We saw a wing adjustment on that car for Marcus Ericsson as well. A couple of crew members reach up and they twist those knobs. Davey all those front wings. What could Marcus Ericsson be looking for? To help the handling of that race car? Well, I think every every car that I've watched for pit stops are putting those into the car, meaning the front tires just don't have enough reports much grip as they would like. And that goes to flat race tracks. Anytime you get a flat race track, that's normally what happened. You just can't get the cars to turn And most everybody that's made wing adjustments has put those winds up to try to get more down and almost cold tires. Jake Marcus Ericsson, trying to hang on ahead of Rita speak a boy hang on his right to red and white cars that are absolutely slugging it out. Sebastian board Day is just behind that battle and is watching it very intently. Meanwhile, Jones is on pit road. And Jones hasn't been totally happy with that race car so far bit of a hang up on this pit stop nearly nine seconds before he's finally released. He's been hanging on. Hopefully, a couple of changes There will make him happier with the handle it and Jones was running in the top five before this pit sequence started. Graham Ray all blitzes by as this part of award. It looks like Ed Jones is going to blend in right behind Simon Passion. Oh, As that has now cycle to lead up to Jack Harvey, just three drivers remaining still needing to pit that is Harvey Sado and New Garden. Then that's going to hand the lead over to Scott Dixon, one of those drivers that topped off after the first caution. Those two drivers are nose to tail Chilton trying to get around McLaughlin as well as hold off Simon Maginot Pot Award. Use your race leader here on lap number 15 and Davey. I know that Jobs. In your head in terms of strategy already starting to turn. Yes. So I'm looking at the you know, pit windows. And right now, the drivers that weren't the front. We're talking. You know, Dixon, PLO Rossi, All the all the drivers heard it rose, a quest that really got shuffled back after the first lap incident. They did pit and you know, barely within that first window, And I say that there are lap or two may be short. But right now where they are running back in traffic or speech a little bit slower. Their first pit stop is our way. Now it's a very narrow pit window. But they could take advantage of cycling towards the front of the several more fuel than everybody else. They're just trying to hang on, and he gained so much ground on board day, coming in turn to just barely got into the back of that car, but that's all it takes. When you're on your own. We're out. Tires and turned around and he had hard guys here that think directly on the back of the car and the gearbox. He is OK, but that car is done and that it was a big hit and the rear of that car off off of that impact making old men stepped out of it until some new card in. Is that right? We're had the bump that wall. I think he might have spun all the way around. Yeah, that was a remarkable catch by Joseph Hicks in the corner because it was tracking up the race track out of control. And you're right. He caught it saved it. That's why he's a champion. Kanaan is pretty fast, but for those guys struggling, they're gonna be mid pack cars now, so this was a big break with the timing of this caution. McLachlan probably comes into this race, Davey with the most confidence he's had in the previous couple of races because he tested here tested at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, so conventional wisdom tells you I don't race conditions are different. But at least knowing your marks on the racetrack, having turned laps of the race track, turning laps of high speed on an oval like an Indianapolis I think all that all Scott felt pretty confident, was pretty anxious to get here to Texas. Yeah, without a doubt and looking really good with calls saying out, find himself that eighth position, but it's always good is rookie and come in somewhere that you feel comfortable with, even though I'm sure veterans are still are comfortable this high speed violent half, although it's not that easy and comfortable with police coming here with little knowledge and know what it takes. Our Tony Kanaan is we talked about was the fastest car in practice today, but he started this race in the 23rd position, made up four spots on the opening lap. But then we talked about the fact he was having issues with the gearbox that stuck him in sixth year. Good news for him. He can get out of that, if need be now, but now he can't get it back above fifth. So what they told him was the tires actually look good right now. He's lost two spots back. So he finds himself now in the 21st position, But they told him what's not get out of sequence and try to bring you in. Really just do what you can right now between 4th and 5th, and we'll try to take care of it. Reset everything. Once you do come in on sequence for those fresh Firestone Firehawk sin fuel. I guess The good news is Davey Hamilton in that scenario is that teams confident enough in a veteran driver to be able to handle that scenario, be able to hold on to the race car and not go laps down by coming in under green. Get right guys it and they could when in the pits, and he may just be able to cycle the ignition and reset the electronics. So the gearbox side of the car and be good again, But don't don't ruin your race. Because if you come in now, and the yellow wasn't to come out before that for screen, you'd be the first bits up.
