"Rita High School. We're naming the baseball stadium after Ed Farmer who was A very dear friend of mine. Premium just went to fan when he went Rita and, uh, we lost him in the past year. And, uh, we ask God to bless you the mortal So he was a very generous guy who helped others. Yeah, I always wanted to golf with that, because he was a terrific golfer, and he had a load of You know, a physical ailments which he talked about regularly. I mean, I'm not talking out of school here, but I He invited me out when we had the White Sox on double DLS for a cup of coffee. I He invited me out to golf, and I just didn't move on it soon enough, and, uh and miss the opportunity. Oh, heavens. A good golfer. He threw 90 Miles an hour in high school. He pitched ST three. They're pitched against Fenwick. And for us, it was good morning, Good afternoon and good evening came up to bat. Although his father went to Fenwick and Ed chose a different high school. We beat them in basketball, but he had it all and baseball and You know, it's important to keep those memories alive of important people head, you know, had a kidney transplant. He was always helping people who needed a transplant. Every year. We have a press conference and Yeah, He worked with Jesse Way down there, and it's just a wonderful man. Do you remember Denny McLain, by chance is high schooler. Yeah, he went to my caramel. He was a great great high school pitcher, And unfortunately, the white sacks instead of going with Danny McLean from Chicago, went with Bruce Howard, who had a mediocre career and Denny McLain, As you know, won 31 games in 1984, I think no, no 68 68 68. What am I saying? Yeah, 68 you know McLean. They made the World Series and won the World Series against the Cardinals, but we could have used them. Let's put it that way. He was really good on to prison Baseball teams two different times. Yeah, he ran into some tough luck. But you know, when I was governor, I did more clemencies in any governor in Illinois history and a lot of people need a second chance. And if they are remorseful and say they're sorry and Make something of their life. I think it's always good to give him a second chance. I recommend a autobiography, Denny McClain called. I never said I was perfect. It's a terrific read. Had a little trouble with math. Pat Quinn little trouble with math. It could be. He liked Pepsi. As I remember. Drink Pepsi all the time. You drink a lot. Yeah, well, there you go. It's all the time we have for old baseball stories. Thank you, Governor. Much appreciated. So I have a great evening. Keep keep behind the golf course. Here, Janko. Alright, I'll see you soon. Especially like hearing about Ed Farmer, two balls and a strike in the 21 swinging.

My kid's gonna go down there and not connect with me. He's gotta buy it. So he earned the money he would run to the Computer When WalMart announced they were releasing one on Lee to get so excited that one got into the cart, but yet by the time he checked out, it was sold out. So he would want despondent. Back into the kitchen. Not knowing when He would get another chance that a P s five. There's none to be found. Then on Thanksgiving night after having his wisdom teeth pulled the day before him and his buddy Vincent, spend the night in front of a game stock of Stop it. River Point Robbie. Is out there. What do you say to your kid when I don't know about you, but I spent the night in front of record stores waiting to get a concert ticket, okay? So I let him do it. Him invention. "On WGN TV no doubt you've heard the news the unfortunate news today of ed farmer passing away I never had a chance to meet him but someone I know pretty well Andy maser obviously knew ed farmer pretty well Andy I'm glad to talk with this sorry it's on such a really it's just a sad day yeah definitely it's John yeah I mean it's it's a shame you get to meet him because yeah everything you've heard about him today actually is very true that down to the fact that you know he had time for everybody and I was just friendly just because he would be able to quote you that way yeah you know and I think that when someone famous or I guess you know someone well known in this in the area the passes away connected to the sports world you know you're gonna get an outpouring of support but what I'm seeing on Twitter are an outpouring of personal stories from fans and pictures of fans with him or with their dad it's it's backed up in the evidence just how many people he he literally put his arms around as a baseball guy and and connected with here in the city yeah he was like a dad that would always try to talk to somebody even if they didn't really seem like they want to make it a lot of conversations with people but by the end of that whole thing yeah I mean there are a lot of value around and you know at that yeah he had that personality he was able to do that and people who really was the only sound better days pitching with the white Sox of course of being I'm here for as long as he was and he just had a way with people it was it was amazing to watch because yeah I come in the parking lot at the incoming incoming everyone thought at your degree field there's a couple guys that that work parking lot there that are just some down to earth all the earth kind of guy that you just love to commiserate with and he would be on a holy corporate hours would be every Sunday he would bring them doughnuts and coffee just because of how to take care of them and you know he realized that people were taking care of him and he wanted to take care of them in its own way a very selfless kind of a guy and it was respond to watch a mop or let's put it that way you know I think that it's is an amazing skill set for anyone to reach the major leagues as a baseball player another skill set to be able to get to a broadcast booth as a color commentator but then to do it as a play by play announcer as well that maybe people thought outside of the broadcasting world don't understand that is that is a very rare thing for a professional athlete to have done all three of those things and done them well yeah that's like a song from a date to go into the to the capital of an eighteen Wheeler but as twelve year ships and you've never driven stick before Dr yeah right can kind of figure out you know just go ahead and do it it really is I mean and and it's it's a tough situation because as a former player you're obviously very well versed in what is going on in the field you can you can describe yeah we're the first person should have been what the senator should have been what it should have been made with the ones you count yes you you're really person I could deal with that for for as long as he did as a player it's another thing to be able to describe the action and I'll leave that other stuff to your partner because you know Darren Jackson I was to play the game at a high level as well and that's what your role was his role is to analyze the players at the as it happened and then kind of lead into a discussion it's difficult forgot that it played the game at the the level he did to be able to just call street by about point not interject some thank you note for sometimes it works for some doesn't doesn't differ and it didn't work because he did it with a personality and a charm that was not really seen as a personal attack on anybody yeah he was quite a few question banks in relatively so because usually he's found a white Sox fan the whites are not stupid yeah I mean we took a look new again and I know what that what should happen and if you're going to cover it up you're gonna be still eat you will respect and I think that he had that respect because he was a player and it you know the other thing I really admire about at and and also DJ yeah there's there's a lot of guys that are that you probably don't going to pop up at all and I really like the fact that both of those guys are are in the clouds a lot players get to know them a little bit and if there's ever an issue but something that one of those guys that they're they're now expanding and they're ready to have a conversation with him about good bad or indifferent so I think it's a it it tells a lot about the about the the style and the the respect factor that these two guys that you know I grew up as a cubs fan but what I grew to appreciate of the white Sox broadcast on the radio especially that and DJ was they would have the the fight is not the work but they would have a real baseball discussions and disagreements but then it still wouldn't miss a pitch they would be able to debate about something going back and forth let their opinions node still you still they were good friends but the game still was at its only baseball or you have the visual as a radio broadcaster you still have to call every single page and and had a really unique way of bouncing between that yeah that's what I'm gonna do because I know from personal right it's not a it's not an easy thing to do the relationship that he and and DJ had was real I mean it was that they were really good friends in the boot they're really good friends off the field they did a lot of things together on the road and even even here at home so you know what you heard there was two guys sitting talking baseball they just happen to have a microphone reaching millions of people every day and that's that's what you want that's what you kind of dream of that when you have a scenario where these two guys get along so well you can tell on there even when they have a disagreement what day it was never a situation where you know you're wrong you're right you're right you're right it was always like a little bit a chuckle at the end yeah it was it was very disarming but you could tell that they were you know very intent on what they were saying but at the same time they're not trying to show each other up there just trying to bring up their own points from their own point of view obviously details of position player and it was a picture so they come from different areas but yeah it worked really well yeah I just remember one I don't know whether is that our DJ said well that's what I think the other one said yeah that is what you think and they just they just made me chuckle just know that these two guys are are just talking baseball there's there's something about the radio play by play a person when it comes to baseball and I don't want to sound like I am over romanticizing it but you know as a kid you grow up and the sound of summer is a lot of times you you you're playing out in the front yard in the backyard you but the baseball game you're mowing the lawn you're listening to the game in your headphones or some connection that we have with our radio play by play people I wasn't if you could talk a little bit about why that is and why ad did have such a connection with that with his listeners centrepoint because I first heard of falling in love with with radio broadcasts you know what back to GM that date because games and melt the white segment grounded out a couple of times but you'd be on a family vacation and related like you're cutting back and stuff like that is huge baseball fan and it was great when you can hear your culinary on north of back when you actually get it to the big that I would go there something kind of dating myself a little bit there but you know you user that murmur years here that that buzz and then you'd hear the pitch command then you can look at it it's one of the things we are on the road at night and I was kind of kind of picture when I do a game like people driving yeah yeah that's where you know you you are you have your your your best impact that bank because you're giving somebody company you're entertaining them you're you're informing them you let him know about things that are going on with that team with the with the league you have that conversation we just talked about you know between the two and you know and it is your credibility because you grew up on the south side he all you wanted to pitch at Comiskey park and did so and you know he had a career as a as an executive as well as a lot of people forget about the fact that with the Orioles he was very very very well behind the the the traffic it might just be a later on became a hall of Famer so I mean it's got a track record in in that area as well so but yeah the thing that the thing that really sticks out to me about at is when we took over the project a couple years ago you know you walk into our you want to do group it's been very well established in you you try to tread lightly and you don't know exactly what to expect but what I found from not only but also DJ were open arms and actually got upset one time when I didn't ask him for some help on something I went around and I went around and try to do it myself any particular reason anything you need you let me know because I'm all upset I'm offended that you did ask me and I know you did sometimes even though he was joking more if it was serious and he was here if if you're the kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back whether you need it for a minute or a new year for a hundred years I mean it's just you felt like you knew him for a long time and it was there was something I'll never forget I was so appreciative of and you know get into these games with him on the road with a lot of fun I mean because you know his his personality my personality different his personality to personalize a different but it's just the way you can work together and you realize it's coming from a good place and that makes it all all work really well on that that's something I'm really gonna miss the sport is so much different to call as a play by play announcer I've got to know John Weinmann pretty well just working over the Blackhawks and the hockey is a mile a minute you got so many things to say you just searching your breath and you let Troy Murray filling with a little color boy baseball is the exact opposite pace I mean of course there's exciting build up but there's there's moments you build two and then there's a lot of time and I think it's this is such a different unique skill set to make that interesting in it for three three and a half for government workers yeah you're right and to do it effortlessly to never feel like you're straining and and you know again I was a little bit later and when they came over to W. G. and that's when I started listening a lot more to white Sox games and fill it fill in an overnight shift after a west coast game I get to sit here and listen to a lot of it and it never seemed hard for him you know because of the game a lot and that that's you know you have to have that passion you know John vitamin certainly had that passion for hockey he's been around a long time it's funny here at a discussion about hockey and baseball and he's amazed at what we do and I'm absolutely shocked and amazed at what you do he didn't meet your spec for yeah.

"To the broadcast all the white Sox when our hopes I guess I'm glad I was in World service again for the fans because of his white Sox fans the great ed farmer that at the age of seventy it was announced over night and Richard Roper joins us right now Jason Benetti also joins us and just a minute he is ed's counterpart on television and it was one of the great play by play radio guys in America he understood the game he had been at scout and Jason you were I think the best young voice in all of sports broadcasting whether your put your call in baseball or you're calling footballer going basketball it your seamless and it and what did you did is there something that you learned from and farmer listen to him when you were younger just his care for every moment I mean listening to add and then let me step back for a moment and say it's not easy to be color guy and then play by play announcer right and ran the gamut in that booth when I was a kid it was John Rooney at farmer those are the guys that I grew up listening to and then Crimea moved over to play by play with stony Chris singleton and eventually DJ and from ed I mean just his if he wanted to win every heard in the clip coming in he wanted to win every game I mean one of the available memory was just in two thousand when the Sox and Tigers got into that big time for all twenty years ago now the indelible memory in my mind is just him talking about how he would've handled it on the mountain your son you would ban and how he was stood up for his teammates and though he and I would have had different opinions on that subject I love the the ruggedness in his heart and just how dog and he was as a friend I mean he would not let people go without any time I saw him when he was with people he wanted to be a great host you wanted to be hospitable he wanted to make things easier for people to come visit him in the booth and DJ and and you know I didn't know him nearly as long as Darren and my heart goes out to Darren today too and as family but had always wanted to be hospitable to absolutely everybody and and that the the take away from me he was a wonderful announcer in terms of his knowledge of the game in the stories he could tell and we could of course again but I think people also forget when he and John Rooney were working together their banter was top notch I mean their understanding of each other was top notch and I did that from the color chair and then he shows up in a booth with PG&E the quite I pointed out Sir and their banter is top notch and they care about each other and they love each other and to do that compelled speech is so difficult and people just don't realize that Jason it's interesting you mention farms call of that brawl because twenty years earlier he had been involved in a in a couple of real calm dingers in fact including one with L. Collins where he actually file charges at one point against Collins and then drop them in exchange for handshake an apology but unfortunately also said that was the first time he had had problems with his kidneys because he was at the bottom of a pile is such a fierce competitor I always tell them such affinity for for for me even before I got to know good we both morning little company of Mary hospital beautiful evergreen park Illinois yeah he was such a southside guy and then you know you had that that really strong years Kampala just mention in nineteen eighty with thirty saves he was a ferocious competitor on the mound back was in the all star game I remember him getting Pete rose to ground into a double play key roles did not like writing at the double plays grounded into double plays even if it was an all star game let me tell you that was a great moment of triumph for at so I I loved watching him as a as a pitcher and then later as you so eloquently described his history as a broadcaster is chasing the same who is one of the absolute best in the business being able to switch from color to play by play is like being a pitcher and then going to third base it's a it's a dual skill very few can handle now and and I think what what it what it what that lesson ends up being is if you invest in the people next to you it doesn't matter what your job is I mean he invested so deeply and John Rooney and and DJ all I know is you know struggling today and it's like you if you have somebody an ad who is so interested in other people and wants them to have a good time and once that like you wanted the players to know why they were there I saw Daniel Palka had tweeted about it coming up to a minute explaining to him how important the craft is that playing baseball on what it's like to stay in the major leagues I mean he was forever walking around to players and it wasn't a pep talk but it was just an understanding of life experience that he gave them and I did multiple players reach out to me today and I've seen so many tweets from former players and guys who have been with the stocks in the when when you spend your time on earth investing in other people the result is you are badly sorely missed you know the one thing about ed farmer when I first got to know am I was it W. make you a billion years ago when there was a W. M. A. Q. and we had that broadcast we had we had the Rooney farmer broadcast and I never really got a chance to meet him I was just a kid and I was you know working as a production assistant and I would have to cut up tape at night to you know kind of the calls because of home runs and wins and losses and stuff like that and there was and it was always interesting to to hear from him because he had the eyes and the heart of a scout it wasn't really that he was a broadcaster he he everything that he learns I think it was a scam obviously pictures have to be scouts matter what right is gonna know who they're facing but when he then left the mound to become a scout I think that was his true passion in you got that feeling the story that it seems like he loves to tell most we're about players that he scouted that about his time on the road at least in my experience we we shared a mutual friend and bandmate Donald but yes P. N. announcer the former LSU catcher Andy does Orioles games as well and and army a look to tell the story about how he recruited Ben McDonald and there was like a Gator in his bathtub when he went to visit her stuff like that there is there is always one of those detailed in that story right where you're just like come on right and and they were true I went you corroborated it then just to make sure and it was true and and you know and we the the joke is on all of us today right because at the had the story and even if you heard him five times before and you told them that you heard him five times before he was gonna tell you it's six times now the complete love yeah yeah sure he warned so if you were to experience what he experienced and how much he got out of his time on earth and what we all would give to be able to say and I've heard it today okay so the drinking game that we used to play was it Jim tell me or sandy Koufax if either of those names were mentioned during the broadcast had to take a drink because it that was they were always going to come up I. N. in speaking of that you know you mentioned to me is really important Jason Benetti which was he in jail he enjoyed having people in the broadcast booth with him I had the great pleasure I I you know because of our relationship with the white Sox were out there a lot to Richards out there with us and and of course Kevin and Lauren who are Die Hard white Sox fans we spent a lot of time in the park over the summer and he always invites us up he always entertains in between innings and there's always a party going on there you walk into the movie that was just you know authorized personnel only there's like a hundred people in a booth at really six people can fit comfortably at right that's my that's my major takeaway of this we may have just seen the end of the last pop lock boot been created you walk in and he'd be like you want them throughout all of your cupcakes brutal from TV like guys all know the the the head pilot American Airlines friend of mine and and father Billy hand over my sametime you more perish out well I think the right back to you and it is very very quickly guys too is a pop culture guy I always thought there was a missed opportunity they should have been a documentary about pharmacies that relationship and friendship with Dennis DeYoung over the years the pop that you're in the pop singer you know together what a rematch if they had to go to south side guys through and through yeah that's so true how are you Jason what are you doing right now I mean what what's hello how are you keeping your self busy now it's it's a lot of catching up with people that I haven't talked to in awhile doing a little writing just for fun today Chuck are fine and I did play by play MLB the show we streamed we strained it seriously NBC sports Chicago is televising every Thursday a white Sox game that would be that game on that Thursday and Chuck and I are doing the call from the U. to blank out of the game that is currently at that moment being stimulated so we've advanced in pitches like we go from a three one pound the ground balls like the next is the one to count the next batter but you think I'm a psychopath because we were doing at all all I thought was I'm at Fenway Park that game is so realistic it does die in the green monster and you see the shadows move over the course of the game I seriously no joke got lost in it for a moment I was like I'm doing a real game right now and I thought no you sociopathic no you're not a sociopath you're psychotic yeah that's it it's totally different you know I just I I miss being out there some I know you do I mean you're you guys are out there all the time is work I get it's a job but you know that I have had the just the best summers around a ball park for the last couple of years with the white Sox eggs you know I grew up on the north side and to be able to really enjoy yeah I've never had never had a warmer feeling never had a better feeling than I have.

This one was Nikki del Monaco off the bench a pinch at three run shot lifted the white socks over the Red Sox six to four that was Ed farmer with the call on the White Sox radio network. Other games of no Brandon low at a to go head to run shot in the ninth is the race. The royals three one Mike trout went deep. Angels one for the sixth time in seven games. This one six to pass the Blue Jays Stephen Strasburg became the fastest pitcher to reach fifteen hundred K's yet nine of them and the nationals to win of the cardinals wasn't enough to save his pitching coach, Derek hill. Quist he was fired. Paul men heart replaces him that was after the game and a little league type of performance from Noah Syndergaard. You got a solo shot the games loan also fired a complete game shutout ten strikeouts. Mets blank the reds one to nothing. He becomes the first pitcher to do that. And the best thing on that. Is this frigging Jesse Winker from the red? Okay. It's hilarious. What happened here? A larry. Because I was telling you moose the day the day before about budgets off air. I was very bombed by him because he caught a a ball left. Field foul ball game the other day, and he thought heckling the met fans, and like wave with them how we won you lost that type thing I said this to you move so things. Well, you know, I'm sure he was getting a lot while he was playing field the whole gang anyone's. He basically said, well, you know, met fans, they talk a lot. And then he goes not a lot of them, which is like. He takes show stadium. Right. It was right about that. A lot of people. What was it rainy day tonight? But you know, I guess it was a day game. Don't matter. The best part is Jesse Winker. So he's got he watches those synagogue just drill home run over his head just right lifting watch the Bongo. Then when he struck out looking at believe already struck about synagogue struck him out at supper, I guess then he gets the game when he was right because it wasn't a strike and Auburn balls and strikes with the right as he gets the game. Now, he goes in the dugout these frigging pissed fans heckling them now imagine he takes his helmet. His batting flips hits his teammate ahead. I sort of it it was a sterile. So he had a lot of bad Comecon his way while the kids from buffalo from the from up in buffalo. And and then I was reading New York he grew up Derrick jeeter fan, actually. So I guess he was a Yankee fan. But yeah, he looked he's she's like he's taking pride and being like the Mets most hated guy villain. He does. But look out saying the mic be before a show. Chipper Jones was a big. Villain. Okay. Put a brave but Chipper Jones of great player jesse's to twenty four right now. Okay. Hi is not a great physicality twenty four or five years, and he's not shipping. John listen in fans could have fought. And no poke fun baton and the Mets were victorious previous night, the the reds Louisville. But now that that's fine. But if you know if fans are saying, whatever they want you as you're out in the outfield. And then you catch the, you know, the ending, you know, a foul wall to the game. Yeah. Should you? Not then poke fun back at them, take the high. That everyone's going to sit that if we're paid customers in methods. We don't we don't. Classic. I'm not saying that are feds aren't class. That comes parcel was sitting out there. You're going to get on the outfielder by son's been too easy Yankee fan, but he's field. Lots of games he grew up but Yankee fan, so he's been a both. And he says to me is less summit goes that I got to tell you met fans when you go to the stadium. He goes there. Just a lot of angry Yankee fans he said as far as the stadium in general in life never mind, you just work here. He's like they re the misery and the mess will winning the game. He went, and he was still pissed, but that's the way you grow up as well. You're very angry group very angry. When he got tossed all seventy four fans that were in the craft. Gotta get a chance to wave Winker was eighty five. In the ninth struck effort. Syndergaard forget it was that come in and pinch hit for him. He wanted up going down on the next pitch goes to Winker ledger down. The other the other night. I was listening on the radio broadcast and how he rose goes the announce crowd is twenty three thousand ninety five and this was toward the tail end of the game. Is there aren't there? Aren't that many is still in attendance of this one goes, and I have a hard time believing. There was any at any point tonight. Was that many people in the stands? Not even. That turn event is. I don't think there was ever twenty two thousand people in the stance that it was Louis Ketziot, by the way, we hit the helmet hitting the head when he slammed his helmet, and it was pretty it. Loops and not the infamous Louis, Kathy. Yeah. We got a tweet out. We'll get we'll get it through the former one the methods would have been three zero. Winker window hippie struck out Tony game tonight before but here's the deal. You're talking about Jesse Winker reason why. Reason why. That's how his now he turned from a guy that it didn't really care about.
