In Canada, each cigarette will get a warning label: 'poison in every puff'

"Canada will soon be the first country in the world to have warning labels appear on individual cigarettes. Canada's mental health and addiction minister says these bold steps will make health warning messages virtually unavoidable. The warnings on the cigarettes in English and French include poison in every puff tobacco smoke harms children and cigarettes cause impotence. Health Canada wants to reduce tobacco use below 5% by 2035. It says tobacco use kills 48,000 Canadians every year. The regulations take effect in August and will be phased in king size cigarettes will be the first to feature the warnings. I'm Ed Donahue

Sweden close to becoming first 'smoke free' country in Europe as daily use of cigarettes dwindles

"Sweden is close to becoming the first smoke free country in Europe. The status of being smoke free means having fewer than 5% daily smokers in the population. Why don't people in Sweden smoke? I don't know, I just never started. I don't like the smell. I want to take care of my body. The government in Sweden has made it more difficult to smoke in public and more expensive to smoke, but it hasn't stopped everyone. And one that I am to stop at some point. There's also the prevalence of snooze, smokeless tobacco, its banned elsewhere in the EU, but is marketed in Sweden as a cigarette alternative made by Patrick Hilton's company, Swedish match. It's part of the Swedish culture. It's like the Swedish equivalent of Italian Palmer ham or any other cultural habit. Help authorities in Sweden are reluctant because of nicotine to advise smokers to switch to snooze. I'm Ed Donahue

Defendant in Pittsburgh synagogue massacre carried out attack, defense acknowledges as trial begins

"Opening statements were heard in the trial of the man accused of killing 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018. It's the deadliest anti semitic attack in U.S. history, even Robert Bowers lawyers agree lead attorney Judy Clark says Bowers shot every person he saw at the tree of life synagogue. She questioned whether Bowers had acted out of hatred or an irrational belief that he needed to kill Jews to save others from the genocide. He claimed they were enabling by helping immigrants come to the U.S.. The defense strategy is to try to spare Bowers from a possible death sentence. Prosecutors described for jurors Bowers terror as he moved through the synagogue, assistant U.S. attorney su song, said the depths of the defendant's malice and hate can only be proven in the broken bodies. The families of those killed are divided whether to pursue the death penalty. I'm Ed Donahue

Can’t get Taylor Swift tickets? See all of Swift’s eras on display at this costume exhibit

"Olive Taylor Swift's eras are on display in a costume exhibit in New York. Swift's era's tour is selling out stadiums around the country. I promise that you'll never find another like me. For anyone needing their Taylor Swift fix and don't have a ticket. The second floor of the museum of arts and design features dozens of swift costumes and objects. Tim Rogers is museum director. Two of the iconic costumes in this exhibition are from the shake it off video. We have the ballerina costume and we also have the cheerleader costume. The centerpiece is a red wedding dress swift war in a 2021 video. Another of her costumes is very heavy. The bejeweled costume and while I can't tell you exactly how much it weighs, I can tell you that when we were putting it on the mannequins, it took more than one person. Greta Meyers is a swiftie and a fashion student. I know I'll be okay if Taylor Swift has gone through it. The goal of the exhibit to explore how Taylor Swift uses clothing and props to tell stories like a vocabulary. I'm Ed Donahue

Double amputee Everest climber pledges to work for benefit of people with disabilities

"The first double above the knee amputee to climb Mount Everest has returned from the mountain. Hari Buddha magar lost both his legs in Afghanistan while serving in the British Army. Welcome to come to 6536 speakers. That's 21,000 feet. He'd reach the top last week 29,000 feet. Margaret says he thought several times about quitting because of his family. What does it feel like standing on top of the world? It is amazing. But it was a snowstorm. So could I stay longer? And. Around. After returning to cheering crowds in Kathmandu, magar says his main aim for the rest of his life is working to bring awareness about his disability instead of the weaknesses we should be focusing on our strength. Catholic clergy sexually abused Illinois kids far more often than church acknowledged, state finds

"An investigation found Catholic clergy sexually abused kids in Illinois far more often than the church acknowledged. The attorney general's office in Illinois found 451 Catholic clergy, sexually abused nearly 2000 children in the state over nearly 70 year period. More than four times what the church had reported. Attorney general Kwame Raoul credits the survivors absent their courage and willingness to come forward and discuss their experience, there would be no true investigative report. Raul acknowledged the statute of limitations has expired in many cases, and those abusers will never see justice in a legal sense. The intention is to provide the public with the accountability, public accountability, and a measure of healing to survivors. Who have long suffered in silence. The archbishop in Chicago called abuse repugnant and said the church is cooperating fully with the state's review. I'm Ed Donahue

San Francisco is naming the nation's first drag laureate

"San Francisco is fighting back against recent bans on drag performances. The city is naming the nation's first drag laureate, representing the LGBTQ+ community, Darcy drollinger. Having the drag laureate position takes what we're doing and really elevates it and gives it a deeper amount of credibility. Drollinger is a drag performer and owns the oasis nightclub. London breed is the city's mayor. I'm really proud of what San Francisco has done to really open its heart and its minds to accepting drag as an art form. Drollinger realizes there are people strongly opposed to drag performers. But I also don't want to live my life under the shadow of fear. The drag Laurie its goal is to make San Francisco sparkle. 'Mississippi miracle': Kids' reading scores have soared in Deep South states

"Kids reading scores have soared in Deep South states. Mississippi went from being ranked the second worst state in 2013 for fourth grade reading to 21st in 2022, Louisiana and Alabama were among only three states to see modest gains in fourth grade reading during the pandemic. This has been one of the most rewarding years of my career. Simone Hart is a literacy teacher at Schoenberg elementary school in New Orleans. The growth I've seen in these children have given me new purpose. These states have passed laws that emphasize phonics in early screenings for struggling kids. Joshua Lasty is a second grader. It is asking the patent and trademark office to force Wyoming based taco John's to abandon its long-standing claim to the trademark taco Tuesday in the filing, Taco Bell says to deprive anyone of saying taco Tuesday via Taco Bell or anyone who provides tacos to the world is like depriving the world of sunshine itself. Taco John's has about 370 locations in 23 mainly Midwestern and western states. "Brandon Johnson was sworn in as the mayor of Chicago. Johnson is the former organizer for the Chicago teachers union and former Cook County commissioner and has no experience within city government, Chicago has a higher per CAPiTA homicide rate than New York or Los Angeles. We don't want our story to be that Chicago beast came so traumatized by violence and despair that our residents felt no other choice but to leave. Johnson is asking chicagoans to set aside deep differences and confront challenges together. A safe Chicago means a safe Chicago for all. No matter what you look like, who you love or where you live. During his inaugural address, Johnson talked about the growing migrant crisis. We don't want our story to be told that we were unable to house the unhoused. California condors confront bird flu in flight from extinction

"The fight is on to save the California condor from extinction. The iconic vulture with a ten foot wingspan is facing the deadliest strain of avian influenza in U.S. history. We have had, I believe, 20 condors already die of this disease in Arizona. Dmitry Dominic at the Los Angeles zoo says they are breeding program is trying to boost the condor population. Condor keeper Chandra David says they have 9 newly hatched chicks. You put down a tray of eggs and look at ten or 15 or 20 as for this year and you think all of these eggs are going to turn into California contours. There are fewer than 350 condors in the wild. I could be driving to work and I really hope to look up in the skies one day and see a condor flying over and just say, oh my gosh, we work with that. The condor looms large in California culture. Flavor molecules give champagne a distince taste

"Researchers in the U.S. and France have been studying the distinctive vertical bubbles which give champagne and sparkling wine its distinctive taste. It's all about the flavor molecules. Those molecules which in the case of champagne happen to be the good stuff, the flavor molecules. Lead researcher and physicist professor Roberto zyne at Rhode Island's Brown university says flavor molecules allow bubbles to rise smoothly up to the top. Something within champagne in the liquid itself that is affecting the motion of both. But what about the bubbles in beer? Those molecules are of a different kind. They are proteins that are smaller and sometimes they attach to the surface and sometimes they don't. Bubble mechanics may also help researchers understand physics in the natural world, like how methane and carbon dioxide molecules behave in the oceans. I'm Ed Donahue
