Former Boston Police Chief Davis: Kill Switch In Every Police Cruiser ‘Would Be A Good Thing’

"Yesterday's Rockland 7 11 robbery shot and killed by police after stealing a police cruiser. And then leading officers on a chase through six South shore communities. Here's WBZ TV is Christina Rex, WBZ security analyst and former Boston Police commissioner Ed Davis says. What makes this case unique is not the stolen cruiser but the length of the chase and the amount of times the suspect managed to escape police. Each one of those individual things happens. Really frequently but combined together, this is an unusual circumstance. Leach was shot and killed by police once they finally stopped him in Quincy after a long effort by hostage negotiators. They say he came out of the cruiser brandishing a police rifle. So when the suspect being guarded by officers on the SWAT team to drop the weapon He doesn't comply and starts to make aggressive moves with the police. Only thing they can do is fire. While the unfortunate end of the chase may have been unavoidable, Davis says there's technology in some police cars that prevent them from being stolen, called the kill switch. Now, when asked if somebody did something wrong, Davis says. Not necessarily. The incident is being investigated by the Norfolk County District Attorney's office, which is standard protocol whenever police used deadly force theory.

That's W I X DOT COM in. Stay tuned after the show to hear you can take advantage of Wick special offer for talking tech listeners focus so several several years ago. Scott Kelly had this idea. It's worldwide photo walked. What if we put on photo walks all over the world and funny thing happened people showed up. Tell the story Scott Yeah when we first did it. you just don't know. I was thinking wow would be cool if we could get a few states on board and all and as the day I had the ideas luck would have it. I was in a restaurant and a walk out and ask Photoshop world years ago a walkout and my friend Ed Davis. WHO's a professor in London. It is high Scotland like head if I did a photo walk. Would you host one in London. He's like absolutely I go ooh now. It's an international photo walk. We never dreamed dreamed that it would grow to so quickly to a thousand cities around the world and thousands and thousands of walkers and it's a social event. It really is just photographers I getting together. A leader chooses a path and you follow it for like two hours. It's a very leisurely stroll. You take pictures. You have fun. It's not training it. Literally is photographers gophers getting together and so many people have told me I never thought it would be as much fun as it was thought so. We just walk around for a couple of hours yeah and they do it. They go this is awesome and so many people have started their own photo walks and they do them once a month after that and so now it's just it's grown into this thing that we never dreamed it would be. I thought man if we could get one photo walk in fifty states and we have a thousand now all over the world. It's so exciting and Jefferson when when I see the group photos coming in on the day thank you see photos from Egypt and from Singapore and from China and from all over the world and places you never thought would host photo walks and see thirty forty fifty people all grinning winning and all happy and you're like wow that's what it's all about. We're all doing the same thing on the same day and it's just photographers. We all love the same thing you know when you you see everybody's is just the most gratifying thing when these groups shots start coming in where it makes me want to cry. You're just like this is awesome. This just it's so much fun and and and that's what it is it's it's fun and it has a great social sidebar on that you know that it helps the orphans from the springs of hope in Nakuru Kenya Orphanage but that's you know it's just everybody getting together and having fun and doing something great. It's it took on a life of its own. How many people do you think we'll be out there. Are this year taking pictures on your first of all I would say probably be twenty five to thirty thousand something like that so you know you have photo oxidative is few as six people and you have ones that the limits supposed to be fifty but people send me pictures from the Philippines where they hundred and fifty people in their walks and stuff so they'll you're supposed to have fifty is the maximum Osama because you think about it fifty people walking down the street as a lot. It's a lot more than it sounds. You know it's it's a lot of people so fifty is about as manageable as it gets so we try to keep it to fifty fifty but they're all different it depends on the city and also be cities with multiple walks. New York will have six or seven walks Chicago. At five or ten walks is just big. Cities will have a lot walks and a little cities may have just one but it doesn't matter. We're just as happy is anybody can be if two people or two hundred it's. We're just want everybody out there. Making friends and taking beautiful photos want to give you a quick funny story before we close but I'm doing the your photo walk in Manhattan Beach. Other than one of those classic Southern California Beach Communities October fifth meet eight at six thirty in the morning. What's your friend religious facebook like you're just made this thing rate. It's like being able to shoot the race to shoot the fair and all that's that's. That's your striking gold there but he October fifth. We can't change the date. This Scott selected it. Will you be hosting photo walks. I am I usually do an international John. "It is possible that his market will open up due to an injury that happens between now, and let's say March fifteenth like that sort of thing somebody has it is happy with. What they have. But then the guy has a foot issue or something. And maybe even if that player is going to come back kind of like what happened with with Kenneth read in the rockets, there might not be as many minutes probably won't be for Kenneth free too soon as Clint cappella comes back, but there is a value to having him for that period of time been Kenner talented as he is is a tough fit for many of these teams because his defensive limitations are so severe that. You can't play them in the playoffs. So if he can be gap filler for ten to fifteen games considering the leverage of these games for some teams. I think they could be happy with that. There are plenty of big here that might be on the by market marching Gortat got waived by the clippers thirty five years old supposedly as interested in the warriors through the words of interest in him Greg Monroe, maybe you could see Brooklyn holding onto him. He provides a little bit different of an element than Ed Davis as a backup center if you're going up against a post guy Monroe's about our passer than Davis wall. So maybe should I shy intervene until you that they already waived him. No. What did that happen almost immediately after the trade? Oh, all right. Well, I totally missed that one. Then I happened to be talking with Mike Scotto of the thematic about it when it happened. So that's why I remember it. How did I miss the anyway happened so quickly? It was it was basically a part of the trade. It wasn't on the market then he's on the market. Yeah. And I mean, considering he barely played for the Celtics last year think that's not exactly a feather in his cap in terms of being a contributor not that was a bad player. Anything? It's just that there. There are so many options here a guy that I wanna talk about who's not a center is JR Smith, and the reason share Smith became more compelling as a buyout player is because of what Cleveland did at the deadline. They took on more twenty nineteen twenty salary in the form of brain tonight. And that made it less practical for them to use JR Smith's partial guarantee with a big accounting salary at the off season point next year because you could theoretically use that the other. I'd say you could trade for fifteen million dollar guy. But he only counts it like three and a half. Or if you'll only team only have to pay them three and a half. So that's pretty awesome for trade partner. But if Cleveland doesn't have the financial flexibility to do that while staying under the tax considering how bad their team probably will be next year. Maybe Dan Gilbert, I mean, maybe they just go. Hey, if you shave a little bit off of your guaranteed for next year. We'll cut you now you can play for another team right now. And then you can do whatever you want to in the off season while the other complicating Petro's walls at Smith's guaranteed date is June thirtieth..

"Eleven Bargo was on a college night. One police officer responding to the scene. Former boss police Commissioner Ed Davis joins us now. He's also WBZ TV security analyst good morning, sir. Nice to have you with us. Let me ask you since this is so recent this took place a little less than three and a half hours ago from a tactical perspective one is responding to a situation like this. What are the first steps law enforcement ticks? Well. Dealing with an incident. Like, this has changed after the Columbine. Police amount trains, you're somebo goop immediately and making. Into the facility where the incident is happening, especially if there's active gunfire. That's exactly what happened here. You know when police make a commitment to do that. There's sometimes on a on a very very dangerous mission of the specially if they they don't know what they're going up against. So depending on what the officers have for recruitment. They can be really gun situation like that. And in appears as one of the officers going into this event was killed. And in terms of of what happened you mentioned that it's it's difficult to know what you're up against in terms of firepower. You also difficult to know how many people could be inside waiting to attack you upon entry. Correct. The numbers of people involved the weapons involved the tactical ability of the suspect you're going up against what kind of cover concealment. Questions that are very difficult to answer immediately upon arrival, but it speaks to the coverage in and what they're required to do in these situations. This is still an active scene. So what happens in the process now as they continue to gather evidence. Well, let's secure the facility. The obviously the first thing. I after the suspect is neutralized is to. The wounded and try to save as many lives as they can. So you know, victims are are taken from the scene. Those who are obviously dead up pronounced dead. And and unless there so that the scene could be processed. We'll be locked down and they'll go through the mechanics of collecting evidence ballistics evidence spent shell casings checking on trajectories of bullets. They could be as it takes time to do this especially with this many victims, but the human side of this really the the tough part of it. The families of the victims have to be notified many of them will come to the shooting scene. So that that has to be dealt with. The, you know, dealing with their families after an incident like this and the community is is the most complex part of responding to something like this. And we thank you very much for joining us. That's former Boston police Commissioner Ed Davis and WBZ TV security analyst joining us this morning to share his perspective on what has transpired overnight a mass shooting at a country, western bar in Thousand Oaks, California. As of this hour thirteen people have been killed, including the shooter and one member of the Ventura County police department, we will have the latest on this situation as we get more information in the WBZ newsroom throughout the morning. "At fifty, three percent true shooting at the center. You really shouldn't be below the league. Average in terms of efficiency also is a pretty high turnover rate. We didn't see as much of him, and that's a lot of him trying to do too much. It's not as much him facilitating at the elbows like we saw when he first got to Portland, they kind of went away from that. I felt a correct me if I'm wrong there. They went away from that last year to more of just the Damon CJ Centric stuffed once it became clear early on that, like the offense. The offense was like in the mid twenties for like the first couple months of the year. They ended up mid pack right around fifteenth. After Dame just started going crazy in January. So yeah, I agree. I think he could get more efficient maybe just because they have more shooting. Everyone can kinda just finish around the room a little bit better. They shoot more threes. There's still there's a way that this offense could. Get into the top ten, but you're the question becomes if you're playing curry, if you're playing a staus, guess it if you're you're, are you to if you're gonna play small, three guard looks now. Are you compromising the defense too much? Yeah, I think that's, you know, I, it's always gonna be a give and take, and they're going to have to figure out ways to balance lineups to get guys that can defend a little bit better out there with their shooters. You hope that a guy like Gary, Trent can be that elusive guy that can defend and shoot threes and you know, he is rookie, but he did play, do he's on an MBA as layers, jobs, nineteen years. I'm also a little skeptical. He's quite ready for the NBA three. I think you'll get there, but he looked. He's still looks more control, kinda curling in for long twos just in terms of just based on summer league. But I liked that pick obviously at the at thirty seven. I thought it was and they did do because they gave up a couple of future picked them. Yeah. And also. Zac Collins, you know, can he really take an another step in the right direction to be a guy that can guard both the four and five? Can he really do that on a consistent basis? Does that three point shot hold up? Does he become a better decision maker? Can swan again stay on the court? And can he kind of find that offense of rebounding role that the blazers had with Ed Davis, canned swan again, kind of replace some of that value with the extra possessions and can the candies guys that they signed, you know, really make an impact and make some threes. You know, they're really going to have to play well offensively because that is one of the best that they made is they got rid of one of their best most consistent defenders in an attempt to become a better three point shooting team. So you know, is that just tilting the team towards offense? You know, is that enough? And so I think there's a way though you know where everything goes, rightly, make their threes and they can rebound they don't get hurt. To batch defensively where it works and they make the playoffs and they, you know, and they give themselves a chance. But you know, I think that is kind of the best case scenarios they, you know, shoot, shoot the lights out and become a team that they were not, you know, become the more like Terry Stotts offense. You know, they were not that last year. You know, they were. They were a slow methodical. The ball didn't really move as much as it goes. Flares is don't work when you either. Number one, the guy coming off, the flare screen into the corner can't actually shoot or be if he is going out of the corner, you can just chase him around him, and then you have to worry about him curling to go back door on that play because you just got plenty of help available in the lane off their other non-shooters. I think the lack of shooting really killed some of that motion that he, you know, looked so beautiful at times earlier in his stint. Yeah. I mean, I, it's just it didn't..

"I mean, what I just draw the the line to and this is breaking any news is you made a bunch of mistakes in twenty sixteen and it limits like you. I mean, what you can do in two thousand eighteen a, you can't. You can't sign Evan Turner to that deal. You can't sign. Allen crab to that dealer. Can't sign heartless that deal and and expect that you're going to be able to bring every one of these guys back now that said, what Ed Davis ended up signing for what Shabazz Napier ended up signing for is so little Napier is just a fraction of of a minimum level deal for two years. And he was such a such a critical part of that that bench last season that that doesn't doesn't make sense to me or more broadly. I don't know why somebody else in the league didn't you know. Didn't jump on on on him as well. But this team just is, is so far set back by paying guys like Alan crab and Evan Turner mohawk Lewis as stars and. You're you've, you've limited what what you can do around on around day Lillard and see Jimmy call now for kicked over to get your response. When this is the way I look at it that really disappoints me the most supportive frontcourt player off the bench and their most supportive backcourt player off the bench are both in Brooklyn on contracts that should been one hundred percent available to the blazers, and I don't understand that. So Greg, see any differently. Yeah. I mean. If if I'm Parlin though I think about one of the three seed and then just getting bounced, you know. And if I do bring back everybody, am I just putting myself back in this position to to have a really good regular season maybe and then just not be competitive. Part of the problem is is they have not done a good job of a simulating young players into being rotational players. And if you look across the t the league. One of the two or three things successful teams absolutely must do is a simulate young players into rotational players by their second or third season, because if you can't and you're not having some of the players are your top nine or ten in the rotation being paid on the rookie scale, then now you're paying for veterans and unless your a premier landing spot where everybody wants to play and players are willing to take less money, willing to sign for exceptions to come, be a part of your team. You're just not gonna fill out your roster. I mean, yeah, Davis has gone, but they invested a lot as I Collins with the draft, pick with the trade to to move up to get him. They loves that Collins. He's incredibly long for a seven footer. He is a MAC, suffer guy. He's one of the hardest working players in the league. That's great. But can he play twenty five minutes in the NBA? Well. Thank parliament better find out about because I think he's going to have to play some minutes this season. You look up and down the roster swan. It's going to be in a rotational player. I don't know if he's ready for that. Jake Lehman is incredible. Similarly player, garbage time play here but can be top six or seven guy. Can it be one of your first swings off the bench? Can he do anything other than shoots? They really haven't been able to simulate him this year. You know, Simon's, Gary trenching you're talented players. But one thing that has not proven over the last four or five years is to have a track record. That'd be able to traff develop players and bring them in to be contributors on their roster. So when you have a team that does exactly what day instead a couple years ago make mistakes by overpaying for players. Then on top of that, you're not able to draft and bring players in and get them incorporated into your rotation. Now you're screwed fled. Out and you do have a major superstar in Dame. You do have a borderline all stars CJ McCollum, but you're a little bit limited with what you can do around them. So this year is a little bit of of we almost painted ourselves into a corner. So we have to play Zach Collins as rotational player, but you know, no sense. And wait until year three..

Make a hundred. So I just went wrong tennis, right. I bet Brian lamb. Bronco do this. I'll bet this guy's a Kobe fan. He's definitely a volume shoot. Don't you think I've seen LeBron hit half court shops like barely. Aerosmith hit a half court plan on With a this rate record. this record, but who's going to spend the time to do it. So somebody is maybe NS Kanter we'll ask him later. You will hear exactly make predictions. Background says that Marquel fulsome, jumpers, progressive nicely Fulton is going to have quote a hell of a year. What do you think Jackie, I think so. I commend Marquel folds for coming out with a little tweet yesterday regarding mental health and depression. And I think we all anyone that watched what he went on last year knew that that was something he was done with good for you for coming forward. That's part of the process is acknowledging something moving on from it. He is going to have a big year. Absolutely. And by the way, the book on the Markelle folds, Jason Tatum, all of that trade is not is not done yet. We still have to see what more will be kind of like Jason. We don't to write the forward to that. When the warriors signed America's cousins, that upset a lot of fans, but also players CJ McCollum discussed his anger on his podcast poll up within guests. We'll new teammate, Kevin Durant, does he is you remember sort of tweeted out at the time, you know, come on guys. This isn't fair this. Why are you doing this? Durant's reaction is hilarious. "Wouldn't come back in that's an error though i think they kind of need him especially in the regular season so yeah i think it's more more defensive lineups although the plus minus numbers are not great olympic was negative twenty winslow was negative twenty seven in this game despite what i thought was a pretty good performance johnson was negative nineteen so a lot of the guys that i wanted out there were pretty negative in that game on thursday night were two other games which seemingly both started before sixers heat ended because they came took a lifetime and a half which of those two do you wanna start with let's to new orleans and portland it was a dominating one nineteen one or two win for the pels it was not that close it got up to thirty and in the third quarter the blazers made a little bit of a comeback in garbage time the pels just completely overwhelmed the blazers it really was a total disaster for them the three point shooting especially from the pels was fantastic early on mir teach although he wasn't only i'm doing it for the three point he was four out of six he had thirty points but then he also was getting inside for some slip some cuts he had a nice drive to the rim as well i think a on ed davis but it got to the point you hit those early shots were the blazers were just totally overreacting to his pumping when they're kinda there anyway like that collins ended up getting a foul thirty feet from the rim on a pump fake and and well nico has been shooting the ball on you have to react to him to some degree it's going pumping thirty thousand feet from the basket is a little much yeah it was a very impressive performance from barich again i thought he did a nice job defensively for the third consecutive game series and and also to me this was the best of the anthony davis games so far he was this sequence which a lot of it was rondo as well in the second quarter the blazers were getting a little bit closer i think it was at that point might even gotten to single digits it was around the range and then rondo hit a ad for two.
