"I am super excited today because we have a twist to the show this evening. We have a show that's really going to blow your mind, but really puts you inside of what patients think. Friends and family, I like to welcome my new friend, lupe, Leon. Luke and how are you doing today? I'm doing great. Thank you for having me. Hey, I'm super excited to have you because as an eye care professional as an optometrist, you know, we always think we have all the answers, right? But to actually have a patient, someone that sits in a chair that we prescribe to, have a conversation with me and let us know if we really doing what we're supposed to do if we can step our game up to me as priceless. I just want to say thank you before we even get started this evening. Thanks, yeah. I'm here to help, and I'm hoping we learn from each other, you know? Absolutely. Absolutely. You know, it's a bidirectional thing, right? We learn from each other and then we're able to go out and spread the gospel about the importance of eye care as a team as a family, right? But before we get started, I must admit, your glasses are flying fresh. They look good. I don't know whose style you, but they do what they were doing. And I just love that metal that aviator style. I almost want to put my aviators on. Yeah, I love it. Yeah, my glasses, someone really, really helpful, really resourceful. She was helping me out and she was giving me good tips. And I'm like, you know what? Let's go for it. I've never had this. I went for it. And that's the cool thing about eyewear, right? You can always just change it up. Always tell everyone when it comes to eye care and eye wear in general. You have that functional piece where you can see, but there's also the fashion police where fashion piece where you can be fly, fresh, you know, really let your personality out as well. So that's awesome to hear. But hey, check it out. I want to jump into your mindset. I want to jump into your experience. But before we do any of that, we have to share with all the listeners, all the followers out there, who you are, who is lupe. If you don't mind, maybe sharing with us where you're from, what you do for a living, maybe a fun fact. Let's get to know you a little bit better before we jump too deep in this podcast. Okay, yeah, for sure. Well, my name is lupe. I live in Chicago born and raised in Chicago. I work as a special Ed classroom assistant. And I just finished my master's program so I will be pursuing being a teacher very, very soon.

"Yes. I don't think they should have their phones either. Because if their phone rings, you know, let's say there's a shooter in the building in the classroom is on lockdown or whatever. And their phone rings and that shooter is in that hallway, there's a good chance that he could hear it, and it directed right to the classroom I think it's crazy. And then some of these, like the lady who you just had on, right before the news, yes, I kind of agree that if there was a shooter in the building and they can have someone to call or whatever, but if they're panicking, they're going to talk louder, probably. And or be screaming and crying, and the shooter is going to hear that. You know, depending if he's in the hallway or not. So I don't know, I'm torn, but I get the kids should have maybe carry a phone with them. But just not on or the teacher collects them, you know, I don't know. It's an interesting point. Yeah, well, you're thinking it's real, Pam, thanks for the phone call. I'll also I'll let you go, thanks for the call. Just because we didn't have phones when we were kids in school is not a good enough reason for kids to not have phones in school, right? I mean, once upon a time we didn't have the wheel, but it turned out to be a good idea. So just because you and I got an education without a phone is not sufficient explanation for me to say, okay, therefore you shouldn't have a phone either. But a workout okay for us. And I'm not sure how it's helping you and I'll just read a couple more texts. John a phone can be a tool for bullies also. And 7 7 three says a cell phone saved no child in uvalde. John, the problem is not the phone. It is the unwillingness to silence and put it away outside the classroom. And I'm going to guess parents make that impossible to expect or enforce. One more, why can't there be cubbies in every classroom for the kids to have their phones in? Then in case there's an emergency, the kid can use the phone. In case there's an emergency, the teacher could have a phone. There was a phone in the office. You could go to the office and make a phone call. A friend of mine is a school secretary. She's very busy. There's a phone there. Parents come and go, calls in messages, go from the office to the students and vice versa. The kids do not need a phone in the school. The problem is, if you say, okay, John, we agree. It's not going to happen. Not only do you have a compliance issue. That's the real hard part, right? So now what do we do about it? And at least in this Dallas school, I'm not exactly sure how perfect enforcement is the school semesters just started that the kids put them in those yonder pouches that you have to turn in or that you use when you go to a concert anymore. Or a play or a comedy show, the people on stage don't want your phone to distract you. So they, when you come in, you have to turn your phone in. I don't know what happens, I don't know if you can, how do they enforce that at the venues, right? Like if the united center and John Mulaney was there the other night, how did they know that you didn't keep your phone in your pocket or your purse? Although I understand that if it does ring or if we do see you using it, you can be escorted out of the building. Maybe you do that in the schools as well. But just saying it's so doesn't necessarily mean that all the kids are going to comply. Sandy wanted to say something about this. You're on WGN. Hi, sandy. Hey, how's it going? Talk to me, man. Yeah, I work for CPS and our policy is once you enter the school, you turn it on up. And then you go directly to your locker and put your phone in your marker. Now, if you don't do that, and you can use it in a classroom, we take your phone, take it to the office, and only your parent is allowed to pick it up. Wow. This is a CPS high school or junior high. It's a junior high. Wow. How's that work for y'all? Oh, fabulous, 'cause they know to get in the building. They have to turn the phone off. And they know and they sneak in in the classroom and get caught because that part is Houston to doing that. All privileges will be exist until their parents come and get it. So it works really well. And if you need to make a call, we take you to the office and let your previous callers in, you use the phone in the office. Yeah. What do you teach and CPS sandy? Well, I'm a seeker. I'm a special Ed classroom assistant. I know all about that business. You folks do great work. I am so glad they have seekers. And CPS. Why are you laughing? Is hiding necessary? Tell our listeners who don't know what seekers are. What is the secret do? A seeker is a purpose festival that focuses on student has a special disability. They may have a pitch in deficit disorder, where you have to maybe focus them on what's going on in the classroom. And it helps us the teacher control the classroom and maintain the instruction instead of wondering what the other students that are to have a special handicap wondering how they're getting to learn. But it's a big help. So these are students who are mainstreamed. They're with the regular student population, but rather than letting them be a distraction to everybody or rather than letting their education be compromised because of these issues in their lives, there's an adult with them in the classroom. So do you stand next to that student's desk during the day? Not every student needs that. Not every student. And in the area, just in case something triggers them and they go up. Yeah. And it happened. But some instances I need to be right next to the store. They might bother to sit next to them, or they might stay around the space, and you got to focus them, so it depends on the stool. Well, listen, thanks for the phone call, sandy. I'm glad that's working at your school. Which school is that, by the way? This is evergreen academy middle school. So we're about to southwest north. Where are you? Actually. 36th in politics. So not real far south anyway, huh? No, no, not real parts though. Yeah. Great. Thanks

"You know our daughter was not accepted Subsequently in middle school she was actually bullied for for two years ever middle school which unfortunately is very common. And you know we didn't have a lot of success really in going to the school leadership and getting them to really move off of that and unfortunately in public school in new york even though new york city is arguably one of the most diverse places on the planet Public school doesn't really have a strong diversity. Unity and inclusion program. They don't really teach that to the students and part of that is because it's just really not in their mindset and i even offered at my daughter's school where she was being bullied which was a school by the way that had a program that was specifically designed to integrate highly functional autistic children with in general out within a general ed classroom so rather than rather than telling the students the other students in the school to embrace into except and to befriend these children They walked around like with a ole syon their backs and it was just a heart to me. It was just a horrible A horrible experience in an indication of lack of leadership and ultimately we transferred our daughter to school that had an anti bullying program and then covert set in. I think i the moral was story is At least here you know public schools have to do a better job. I think of really exploring that the diversity equity and inclusion and you know jennifer by full disclosure you and i are part of a of a startup. All the games to unite where we are creating a board game called buto game with the intense to teach Teenagers at that young age before they start formulating some of the is and racism and and negative thoughts that maybe they start to percolate as they get older or inherit from their parents but to have these explorations and these discovery sessions with other students that are diverse so that they begin to understand their differences and realize that again. We're all different. The problem is we don't have exposure to that. We don't have understanding of that appreciation of that. Then we fall into a primal space where you know if if we tend and the tendency is to dislike or fear anything that's different from us and unfortunately most of the time when we're afraid of something We usually avoid it or worse. React aggressively towards it. So mrs wera you know. I know that we feel there has to be a lot of progress made Not just in america but around the world in the diversity inclusion space and it starts with young people it starts with getting them to acknowledge and appreciate the differences of their classmates who come from a different race creed color country religion and to learn to embrace and accept that that's how you beat stereotypes and racism and hatred and bullying and all these things. So that's that's the movement were were hoping to really create in the world. Thank you for sharing a your struggles or challenges as a father. Having a child. i'm retired also providing rb. "Okay we're back with anne murphy paul the author of the extended mind and one of the things that really struck me in the book. Is i have a child who has an iep and one thing that iep for people who don't know season special ed of some sort and get special supports at school and a lot of the concepts. In this book. I recognized from special ed supports and one of them is the role of the body in the mind. And this idea of fidgeting and kids you know when you go into a special. Ed classroom in school. Uc things like wobble seats. You see chew sticks kids who can chew on things while they learn. Some kids might be lying on the floor where they learnt walking around while they learn and again. I think our tendency is to look at it and say like oh these poor kids. They can't sit absolutely still and learn and use their brain muscle. Like it's supposed to be used and i was really struck in the book that this idea of like this is very fundamental to how the mind works motion and being inside your body while learning and taking in information and so. What's the connection there. yeah. I'm so glad you brought that up because it has often made that kids and people with learning differences are almost like the cutting edge of thinking outside the brain. I say that all the time. I'm like come..

"Up with something. That I think might be one of my most favorite things on the Internet. Uh, my name is Sandra Johnson. Very sexy and training right now. It's kind of just like grainy. In the shadows iPhone Video in which Sanford Johnson is standing there with one ft. Barefoot while he's holding a white tube socks and a sneaker. Remember, according to Mississippi law, he's not allowed to perform an actual condom demonstration. With a condom. So what he does is he holds up this tube sock to the camera. And he says, to teach kids how to put on a sock. If you're going to be engaged in the side that when you're wearing athletic shoe or where you're using a question that matter to me, as long as your foot is protected, I want to make sure that you have On the side due to start with the stock and I want to pitch out with the air out of the side because I want to make sure that there's room for my telegrams when I'm engaging in sexual activity. Then I take the sock and put it on top of my foot. And all I do is just roll it down. Just rolled down that some people stop right here and just only put that sock on halfway. That's not how you do it. You want to take this Stop if you want to roll it all the way down your quick You want to roll it all the way down the foot, And then you can put it inside the shoe. And then you're ready to engage shoe activity. Now, when I'm doing this video lives on our website, and you should absolutely go watch it when you're done with this episode. This video is delightful, but it served a larger purpose for us, which is that it reminded us There are a lot of different ways to have conversations about sex and the body. And we thought, okay. What if for our live show, we try to reframe the conversations happening around Sex, said. What if we use metaphor and euphemism and comedy, maybe even a little meditation. As a way to navigate all the stuff swirling around sex, Ed whether that's a law in Mississippi or just the general awkwardness that comes with this topic, so to do this One thing Sanford and Sex Educators from all across the country told us was that a key part of a sex ed classroom was a question box where students could drop in anonymous questions, and then the teachers would pull them out and answer them to try and facilitate discussion. So we thought, What if we make our own question box and try and answer the questions with this reframing? So we gathered questions from listeners read it, Sanford. Fifth graders. It's in no way comprehensive, but we gave it a try to kick us off. Here's major Connery seeing the first question this is just her A mic and a vocoder. Why period? Why are period went? Oh, that are period. It's no Oh, why period it. Thank you. It's really An unbelievable pain. It feels like someone's shoving a knife up inside me and then turning it slowly. But with no rhythm that I contract So I can never quite get my head on top of it of predicting it. It feels like I'm like in hell and I can't move. That's Cinda Aga. She's 20 for a filmmaker, and she's talking about what she goes through every month when she gets her period. Now.

"And so my freshman in high school Isa, part of Deerfield High School, which is district 1 13 year from Highland Park. Is he learning online or in school right now? No, he's been remote since March. He hasn't stepped foot in school since March. The interesting thing is that we just received an email that said that services are going to be available so kids will be able to come back to the school. Sports or for lifting weights that they want or even football practice. Our kids can't learn in school. Do you feel this need? That doesn't think quite right. Not even hybrid was not a perfect not even hybrid, And the unfortunate thing that we've learned is that all of our surrounding schools Are either in hybrid or even fully in person. We're in Lake County. And so our neighboring Glenbrook North High School has now gone back fully in person. Stevenson High School, which is one of the largest states has a hybrid option. Many other schools in the surrounding area do as well. The Deerfield in Highland Park district 1 13 does not. It's a very, very disheartening Chicago public schools want them there, but the teachers won't go back. Most of the teachers will, by the way, some won't and now the union made May may go on strike about this. But it's interesting that in the CPS system in the Chicago public schools, which is black and brown, predominantly, ah, lot of those parents don't want their kids to go back, which is disheartening to me. What do you suppose most of the parents in Deerfield want? The thing we've taken survey after survey and the surveys have shown that many parents want their kids back in school. Many parents want their kids back in school. Now there isn't a union in district 1 13. But the decisions are made by the superintendents and the school board. And so there's you know, a lot of parents and Deerfield that want their kids back at school. There are some parents that don't want their kids back in school. I think if that's the case, then we should have a choice. And in many ways, parents who do want their Children back in school are left to feel like you know, we're in the wrong Laura, you know, were somehow reckless, demoralizing and reckless, right? Exactly When when we want our kids in school, That's where they should be. I'm with you completely on that. I think that's the way this narrative has been shaped and I think the CTU has been on the forefront of that. So the people that say no, I want my kids there. Why you're endangering the teachers. This is terrible, And that's not true. That's not. That's certainly not the motivation, and I think everybody realizes the risks that we're talking about. But if you're willing to put your kid in the classroom, I think the teacher should be willing to go back into that room. Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. And I think that I feel for the teachers. This is again. This is a really daunting decision, but teachers are essential workers. My husband is an essential worker. He's been working through the pandemic since March, and that comes in part and being with being a net. Sensual worker, right. If you're an essential worker, this is A your essential boil, boil, boy. We have got to get them the vaccine as soon as possible. They, you know, I just and I talked to the guy that's in charge of it. Or one of the people from the Cook County Department of Public Health, Dr Kieran Joshi a little while ago. Even thanks for the phone call. I'm glad you were able to get in with us, but to the teachers are in one beast starting Monday. You can go online and you can sign up. They don't have the vaccine's ready for everybody yet, but the vaccines continue to roll out and teachers are in the next group. Which is really good news. But they don't prioritize teachers over anybody else in that group. If you're in one B, you're all in one B and one B includes anybody over the age of 65. One B includes cab drivers and bus drivers and baristas, grocery store workers in manufacturing employees. I don't want to tell anybody that you're less important than them that your health should be compromised, but There has to be a line and I would put teachers ahead of everybody else in one B Is that so crazy? Thanks for the phone call, even let's go to Karen. You're on WGN. Hi, Karen. What do you want to say? You're on the air. Hey, I liked what Eden said about kids belong in school. Adults also belong in restaurants, theaters and on airplanes and I am currently a sob. I retired after 25 years. So I've been subbing in different school district's and I stuck with one because the others the other school district's They are not doing what the one school district is. So I am now a long term sob in one school district. When I went to the three other schools, I stayed for one day because they were not taking any precautions. Whatsoever. What's the school district that you like that you felt safest in I The one that I'm currently working for its in Carol Stream, and we just quickly what of the things that you saw in the other ones that made you nervous for the other schools? The kids would wear masks. But if the special ed kids, you know that are in the regular ed classroom, you know they had a hard time wearing masks, and they were biting on it and, you know, doing all kinds of things. Right. You don't know that would require me to help them. Put it back on and keep it on. It was a struggle. They are allowed to eat in the classrooms. There was no hand washing after or before. They are all allowed to play outside together with, you know, one basketball. They're all playing basketball together. With their hands in their germs and everything. They all line up together here where I'm working. They Have the kids, you know, they allow you in the second grade to come in one door, but they let one kid in that kid it and a time and maybe 10. Seconds later, the next child comes in and they know where they're supposed to line up their You know their 6 ft apart. They have masks on There is a coveted screening every day online or on paper, but they don't even get out of the cars or onto the school bosses. Unless they have that already done. Isn't it? Amazing? The difference? One school to the next. Wow. Karen, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you're calling. And I'm glad you found a place you feel safe. I'm gonna leave you. Go to Michelle. We've got a few Michelle's online. This one is Michelle Online three. Hi, Michelle..
