"You? Good, good, celebrating the connection with our pets. We have Tanya womack on the phone with us. She's the staff coordinator for pet life at eckerd college. So is eckert college a pet college or is it a human college? It's actually a human college that you can bring your little furry animals with you. Wow, I have never heard of that before. I would have loved that. I had to hide my pets when I was in veterinary school as well as the undergraduate. No hiding necessary here. They can hang out with everybody on campus. Is it true that you're the first school to allow this? Yes. So our record date back to the early 70s where we have many students that come into campus and they started a small pet community here on campus and we've just kind of grown over the years where we just have a plethora of animals from dogs, cats, birds, chinchillas, snakes, rabbits, ferrets, most of what people consider as pets we have them here on campus. So now where are you located? So Petersburg, Florida. Yeah, right outside of the Tampa Bay Area. Okay. I'm sure there's going to be lots of potential students now wanting to apply there for this. So now have you noticed that students that have their pets with them, they actually do better in college? I think they do. I mean, it's pretty cool that you can just have a long day in classes and then when you get home about 5 or 6 in the afternoon, you can just go to your dorm room, you can play with fido or fifi and just have a good time there, kind of relax and then go back to your study. So we've definitely seen students that have thrived having their animals with them here on campus. How did this start? Well, I wasn't around the 70s. Okay. But since I've been a part of it, it's just grown students. I mean, that's the good thing about students come up with an idea of what they want to have on campus. They present it to the administration. And the next thing you know, there's some type of program or community here on campus, and that's kind of how it evolves. People bring it to the administration, the administration and support and over the past few years, we've just seen an increase of students wanting to come to eckert just because of our animal program that we have here. So is there a special dorm set aside for this just for the animals? Or are they just integrated throughout all the dorms? They are special dorm set aside, so we have two apartment style complexes here on campus. So animals can live throughout those complexes. And then there are other traditional areas we have either one or two houses within little cluster for House cluster. So every location, anywhere you possibly can live on campus, they're somewhere that you can bring in animals. So we have every year we seem to grow even more because of the number of students that are wanting to bring the animals here. What's the strangest animal that you've had on campus? Oh man. I don't know the strangest, but I think I would say the coolest animal that I've seen so far has when people bring their ducks and you have pet ducks like literally with diapers on kind of waddling behind people that's pretty cool to see and you see someone walking and there's like two or three ducks just following behind them in a row, which is pretty neat. Wow. What do you do about their pet care needs? Do you offer pet day care or how does that work out? Do they just have to have their own means of caring for them when they're in class? Well, students have their own means of caring for them and then they work with their neighbors as kind of you're in this community where your next name will watch your cat. This time and then I'll watch your dog next time so you build a kind of community in your house. But I do know the pet life program that we have that's run by students. They're always trying to figure out ways to figure out this type of knee and so they're trying to figure out how they can get a day care on campus. It's not quite where they want it to be, but that's something that they do envision as a goal of theirs is to actually establish a pet day care where you can just drop your animals off during the daytime, go to class, come back and pick it up. Wow. I'd like to work there. I don't think everybody would like to work there. Well, I've never heard of a staff coordinator for pet life at a college before. Are there other colleges doing this that you know of? There are it's interesting that we have a lot of schools that are actually reach out to us because they hear about us and they want to start a program. So we're starting to see an uptick in schools. We've heard from sets and university in Delhi in Florida. We do know there's Washington and Lee has one, but there's a bunch of I can't name with hop off top of my head. But there are several schools and they're starting to grow even more because they're hearing about the cool things that we do down here that occurred. Well, what brought this to my attention was I saw, I believe, a video of a graduation ceremony. You actually have a graduation ceremony for the pets? Yes, this was our 5th year this year and we actually have the animals graduate. So whatever has been with you during the four years or you could have been a two year student that transferred in or you could have got your animal late in your career, you can bring your animal and graduate just as if they were spent four years here as well. Yeah, I got to ask you, doctor Debbie, what animal did you sneak in and how did that work out? Oh, well, I had a lizard, a fence lizard named Rambo, who I hid in his cage, I would hide in my closet when the RAs came by. And then they actually saw the tank one time I had it out. And they came through and they saw the crickets hopping around. And they said, there's no pets allowed, and they thought I had pet crickets. Lizards. Varied under the substrate in the cage. And I said, I'm sorry, I'm just a vet student. And I'm just really lonely. I miss animals. Cricket. Yeah, so she thought I had a pet cricket. Wacky. Well, this is an incredible story, and of course I'm sure it draws a lot of attention to the enrollment there. Right. Yeah. "Debbie. Hi Helen, how are you doing? Hi, I'm doing real good. Just want to let you know I might lose you I'm on my cell out in the middle of Texas. Okay, well, I'll tell you what. Let's get you right to the doctor immediately, so just in case we lose you, you'll get your answer, okay? What's up with your animals? Well, I have a two year old Scottie, and she's a good little girl. She's the best dog in the world, but she gets excited. She piddles all over. She's been doing it since she was so 8 weeks old and was wondering if there's anything we can do to prevent it. Okay. Can you tell me in this situation when she's doing that? What triggers that? Meeting strangers, that's about the biggest trigger right there. Now, I do that too. I didn't think it was a big deal, but well, I'm excited to get this question held because this is actually a very common problem. And we see it in a lot of dogs. Most commonly, we see it in puppies. And they tend to kind of grow out of it. But two years of age, if that behavior is there, we're going to have to battle this. And there are basically two reasons why this happens in dogs. One of the reasons is that they're just excited. And we call them excitement urinates. And then in other pets, it's actually a way that they're displaying submission. So if this is happening more when people are coming into the home and it happens right when they're walking to the front door and she gets excited and it's all a big event. That's probably more of just an emotional excitement type thing. And there's definitely ways to work with that. That's what you think it is? That's what I would say, though, because she'll go right up to people and as soon as their little tail starts wagon, the faster it goes, it starts. And then splash in the urine all over the place. It's a great greeting. In the truck, I took her out for her little break and she thought pomeranian out there while we were out going to the bathroom out there and she peed all over my shoe. You were there. So when she does this, does she kind of roll over? Does she show her belly when this is happening? Nope, not at all. Okay. Because that's one way that we can look at the other cause of this is when they're being submissive. Because in the dog world, a dog that submissive to another dog tends to kind of show their underbelly, they'll roll over and even urinate a little bit. So in your situation with this being excitement, this is an exciting video we can work with this. So the hardest thing in the world that I tell my clients when we're fighting this problem is you need to tame down the greetings when you enter the home, whether it be you coming home from work, or someone entering into the home. It's common nature we all want to go, I be great to see you. But it actually that's actually kind of perpetuating this behavior because they get excited all the more. We're just kind of amping them up. And then the urine flows. So the first thing you want to do is when you come home, you ignore your dog. As hard as it is, for 5 minutes, you go take her straight outside, don't make eye contact. You're not looking at her, you're not talking to her, get her to do her potty business. And then after a few minutes, the excitement kind of wears off and you hopefully not find that that will happen at that time. But this is a very hard thing for people to do. Some other dogs, we can try using a head halter. If you've ever seen those general lead harnesses, that's kind of a good thing. And even just kind of practicing some kind of calm commands when you come in, you know, just a quiet sit without getting all excited. But really, that getting them all worked out thing is that's really what kind of triggers this and feeds that behavior. And probably even with strangers, not let them pet her right away till she settles down and exactly. And that's what I do as I would tell people when they come to your home, just ignore her. Don't look at her, don't talk to her. You know, same thing, no eye contact. And if you have to, you can take her outside right as they're entering. But in many cases, if you just tell, and you instruct your friends and family, you know, just don't pay attention to the dog. Then that's going to be a really good thing. And you'll want to practice this. So you want to have friends and family members that are in on this kind of helps set her up. So that you can practice this behavior. And it will work, but it just takes a lot of conditioning in that way. Because I guess she's a very happy dog, actually too happy. I guess that's a trigger this year. We want to keep the haps. Dan Sullivan found something called the strategic coach and part of what Dan said is what life get comes down to his habits. Happy People have different habits than unhappy people. Successful people have different habits than unsuccessful people. And he said what a habit is is it's a discrete piece of behavior that you repeat over and over again until it becomes a habit. And it takes about a month, and in other words you train on that and you repeat on that takes discipline, but over time you internalize it, and it becomes more natural, and then you can learn another habit now why this is important under stress because I'm am a psychiatrist, but I'm also a passionate about neuroscience. Is. What happens is when we're under stress and who isn't. We have you've all heard of your adrenal glands? And what happens is your adrenal guns. Put out something called Cortisol. High Cortisol is high stress and what happens is your high cortisol triggers something in your brain called your middle and Migdal as part of your emotional brain, and when that high cortisol goes up. What happens is it triggers a migdal hijack and what that means. Is Your Migdal shunts blood away from your thinking brain. Into your survival brain and guess what taps into your training. It will tap in to what you've been trained to do almost automatically. Do you think NBA stars when. They think between shots. No, it's training and they've been trained. What what's the saying? It May Have Been Stephen, Covey senior, or someone said you need. What is it ten thousand? What does it take to be come an expert? He said was at ten thousand hours. As a ten thousand hours or know that's probably more training in many of us however. Yeah thousands of hours. Thousands of hours and what happens is you become an expert at it, so you don't even have to think when you're faced with a situation, so I can't emphasize what Jay is saying. You've been getting so much press this last month because of the thirtieth anniversary of your Wimbledon final. Did this catch you off guard? It just blew my mind that it's been that long and then the other thing is that so many people had been talking about. Remember. When it was all happening and you know one of my friends. Even call and she's like you're. tweeting on twitter and I'm like what? And so funny because my phone have been going up but I didn't. Never really happens. I didn't really know what was going on. Sounds pretty cool, so this is the first time then that you're just minding your own business, and you're just brought back into tennis because of your career because of social media. "In two thousand and three seventeen year old Brittany, Phillips was through when she received full scholarship to study chemistry at Eckerd College in Saint. Petersburg at coastal city in Florida's Tampa Bay region. The Ma Dr Magazine men had attended the same college in the nineteen seventies, and excitedly helped her door to prepare for the interstate move from their hometown of Tulsa Oklahoma. Britney was inspired to study chemistry after losing her grandmother to cancer during his senior year of high school and had decided to dedicate her life to finding a cure for the disease. She left the college in August of two thousand three and threw herself wholeheartedly into her studies. Brittany was the friendly and trusting young woman who had no problem settling into her new surroundings. She succeeded academically made new friends and took a part time job, waitressing and populous seafood restaurant. However as she needed the end of her first year record, Call Age Brittany, became increasingly homesick. She was a year younger than her classmates. Having started kindergarten year ahead of schedule, and she found it difficult to be away from her loved ones. She decided to withdraw from echoed college and return to Tulsa to continue her studies closer to harm. Brittany's mother Maggie and older brother Joshua supported this decision wholeheartedly. They were a close knit trio with the mother Andorra's speaking on the phone nearly every day. Maggie was as Britney's first point of contact whenever she was struggling needed. Advice and Shea was relieved that Britney was returning to the comfort of Tulsa. As Concerned Martha she had been worried about Brittany's safety while she was studying into state.
